Well either mayo or mustard. I must have both on hotdogs and burgers. I do like ketchup on potatoes but keep it away from mah meat!

I've found equal parts mayo and Raplhs chipotle mustard makes a great steamed artichoke dip.

Ketchup is the clear loser, can't decide between the other two, which are even delicious together. I use mayo more often, but mustard is king in the right circumstances.
― chap, Monday, 7 July 2008 20:30 (seventeen years ago)
I've only started liking mustard and mayo in the past few years. Ketchup I really only eat w/hamburgers though.
honey mustard is the shit btw

yes the right honey mustard is great
― Surmounter, Monday, 7 July 2008 20:32 (seventeen years ago)
Can't choose between these three -- each one is an absolute must with something, whether it's fried potatoes, hot dogs or tunafish.
Now that Hellmann's has jumped from $3.49 to $5.29 in the last couple of months locally, it's time for me to try making my own mayo.

― latebloomer, Monday, 7 July 2008 21:49 (seventeen years ago)
I like more than one sauce on a burger, but I tend to separate them by putting one kind on top of the patty, and another underneath. I know it all gets mixed up in your mouth, but it seems more appropriate, somehow.

There is no such thing as a good mayo.
― King Boy Pato, Tuesday, 8 July 2008 08:23 (seventeen years ago)
I think the problem people have with mayo is that its color and texture makes them think of it like it's a dairy-based sauce. Hence Shakey's 'boiled milk' comment. It's just a vinaigrette with an egg (yolk) used as an emulsifier. Why would that be gross hot? You guys like salad dressing, right? You guys like eggs, right?
― G00blar, Tuesday, 8 July 2008 09:49 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah good mayo is great, as is a good hollandaise sauce that's coating a tasty breakfast of poached eggs and spinach on english muffins.

Mayo in it's most common form just doesn't do anything for me. I don't notice the flavor at all, so why even put it there? Oh, because I'm a fat American! I'm happy to have some kind of fancy schmancy ailoi on my sandwich.
Ketchup is good as a shortcut in some recipes, but it's also the worst thing I could imagine anyone doing to a hamburger.
Mustard is truly awesome
― kingkongvsgodzilla, Tuesday, 8 July 2008 12:32 (seventeen years ago)
Thank you sir. Ketchup on a burger is the worst kind of slap in the face to a cow, well okay, the second worst.
― wanko ergo sum, Tuesday, 8 July 2008 12:46 (seventeen years ago)
You know the worst thing about ketchup? When you leave some on the plate, then dump the plate in the sink without washing it, and then you come back an hour later and the whole kitchen has that nauseating sickly-sweet "KETCHUP WAS HERE" smell. It's enough to turn you off ketchup entirely.
― fiscal liberal (kenan), Tuesday, 9 December 2008 18:35 (seventeen years ago)
Mustard wins here -- there's just so much more going on with mustard, there's no competition. But you can't put mustard on fries, so for me mayo comes second. Hellman's is the best everyday stuff (I understand it's called Best Foods mayo in California? Freaks.) but the luxury mayo is Trader Joe's. All light and creamy and with that all-important bite of vinegar flavor. Check it out, yo.
Ketchup is... around. It's ok on fries, I guess, and maybe chicken strips, but mostly it's a waste of good tomato. It tastes like somebody got halfway to making barbecue sauce, got really lazy, and decided to just dump a bunch more sugar in and call it a day.
― fiscal liberal (kenan), Tuesday, 9 December 2008 18:49 (seventeen years ago)

Anybody who's eaten fresh mustard greens (raw) knows why mustard gets extra points, but that's not in the condiment discussion so ignore this part plz
― WmC, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 19:18 (seventeen years ago)
I think the problem people have with mayo is that its color and texture makes them think of it like it's a dairy-based sauce.
the problem i have with mayo is that it makes me nauseous. i can tolerate it in very small amounts in egg salad or tuna salad, but no one but me ever prepares them with "very small amounts."
