Shimura Curves in London and Liverpool (Do not read if you hate ILX supergroups)

OK, so we've kind of alluded to this but now we're officially announcing it.

Shimura Curves is the new supergroup featuring myself, the lovely Anna, Frances (ex-Now, Morgen und Nite) and Miss AMP (don't mention the trees).

We sing lovely girly shape-note harmonies on top of laptop pop built from classical and folk samples with bits of drone. Costumes may be involved. There will be dancing.

You can witness this at:
*Sunday 22nd May - The Windmill, Brixton. This will be a barbeque starting at 4pm, so be sure to get there early or the food will be gone!
*Saturday 28th May - The International Pop Overthrow Festival, Liverpool. The Cavern Club and Flanagans (two shows)

(There will be a prize for anyone who can actually say what a Shimura Curve is without googling - though Toby is disqualified from this competition.)

Shimura Curve (kate), Monday, 9 May 2005 13:09 (twenty years ago)

Maybe I'll go to the Liverpool gig.

As for the name It sounds mathy.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Monday, 9 May 2005 13:11 (twenty years ago)

Some kind of elliptic curve innit, rings a bell re Fermat. Though a long time since I did any real maffs.

Can't make either of these dates due to foreigness but hope they go well for a view later in the year at one of the major London venues.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 9 May 2005 13:12 (twenty years ago)

definitately mathy I'd say, what with singing about Pi and that.

Ste (Fuzzy), Monday, 9 May 2005 13:13 (twenty years ago)

So far the only person who correctly identified it was The Spy. Mmmm, donuts. Transdimensional donuts, is there nothing they can't do? Mathematicilious!

x-post, Pete getting warm!

Shimura Curve (kate), Monday, 9 May 2005 13:14 (twenty years ago)

'definitely'

Ste (Fuzzy), Monday, 9 May 2005 13:14 (twenty years ago)

Definately near the edge of infinaty.

Shimura Curve (kate), Monday, 9 May 2005 13:15 (twenty years ago)

Please to put on show when am in London thx.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 9 May 2005 13:16 (twenty years ago)

Of well if its got something to do with infinity then I'm audi.

Donuts, this isn't a torus/bagel is it?

Pete (Pete), Monday, 9 May 2005 13:17 (twenty years ago)

Ned, when are you in London? We will book one especial. Maybe a double bill with the Kissing Time.

Shimura Curve (kate), Monday, 9 May 2005 13:19 (twenty years ago)

:-D

I fly in on Friday July 8th and leave Monday July 11th, then return on Thursday 28th and leave very *very* early Saturday morning the 30th. Somewhere in there I wish to engage in extended FAP nonsense, obv. Oh and lots of good food.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 9 May 2005 13:21 (twenty years ago)

Whoa - this sounds good. Will try and get to Brixton.

Ned - my band are playing in London on the day you fly in (8th July)Be there!

Dr. C (Dr. C), Monday, 9 May 2005 13:31 (twenty years ago)

Rah! Then there I shall be, if somewhat jet-lagged! I should revive the visit thread! I am missing Poptimism though, it's the night before! :-(

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 9 May 2005 13:36 (twenty years ago)

I am somewhat disappointed by the lack of Fermat talk. Sigh.

But then again, most people I've told the name to have thought I said Chimera Curves or, worse, Jamiroquai. Argh!

Shimura Curve (kate), Monday, 9 May 2005 13:46 (twenty years ago)

Shibuya-kei

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 9 May 2005 13:50 (twenty years ago)

What's the name of that curve that appears in nature? like in conch shells & stuff .. follows the perfect ratio ..

Although, it kind of sounds like some sexy japanese air hostess reference... But I still have air hostess uniforms on my mind...

diedre mousedropping and a quarter (Dave225), Monday, 9 May 2005 13:53 (twenty years ago)

I am terrified about this, but the oppertunity to unleash my inner diva was too much. (People who have seen me drunk and playing up may possibly want to stay away now)

Anna (Anna), Monday, 9 May 2005 13:54 (twenty years ago)

Kate, Anna, you should come and play Glasgow.

Ally C (Ally C), Monday, 9 May 2005 13:59 (twenty years ago)

Do not be terrified! It'll be fun. :-)

(Hey Kate, I wrote asking Frances about something and have not heard back. Should I resend? I gather she is a busy soul.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 9 May 2005 14:00 (twenty years ago)

INNER diva ;-)?

suzy (suzy), Monday, 9 May 2005 14:14 (twenty years ago)

A shimura curve is not as good for cryptographic applications as certain elliptic ones. That's all I know and I'm going to go look it up in google now. I was thinking about supergroups this weekend! I really want to be in a noise band again.

TOMBOT, Monday, 9 May 2005 14:14 (twenty years ago)

What's yr role in the groop, Anna?

Dr. C (Dr. C), Monday, 9 May 2005 14:15 (twenty years ago)

I think it is like the red swirl in a raspberry ripple. At least I hope it is.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Monday, 9 May 2005 14:16 (twenty years ago)

goodness me.

toby (tsg20), Monday, 9 May 2005 14:21 (twenty years ago)

I did learn some things from exposure to higher maths...

I am singing Dr C, for want of a better word.

Anna (Anna), Monday, 9 May 2005 14:24 (twenty years ago)

And you being a journalist know all about better words. So singing it must be!

Pete (Pete), Monday, 9 May 2005 14:26 (twenty years ago)

Are you with me Dr. C
Are you really just a shadow
Of the man that I once knew
Are you crazy are you high
Or just an ordinary guy
Have you done all you can do
Are you with me doctor

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 9 May 2005 14:27 (twenty years ago)

i hope to catch this at the IPO, will probably be the Cavern Club early session (i assume?).

Ste (Fuzzy), Monday, 9 May 2005 14:27 (twenty years ago)

do you need a support band?

ken c (ken c), Monday, 9 May 2005 14:31 (twenty years ago)

INNER diva ;-)?
-- suzy

Hey you! I'd only just noticed that. (Noticed? It was actually pointed out to be by minions, Mariah-style. The minions said I should make a light-hearted response)

Anna (Anna), Monday, 9 May 2005 14:34 (twenty years ago)

**I am singing Dr C, for want of a better word.**

Fantastic. This is obv now the best band ever.

Very droll, Ned.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Monday, 9 May 2005 14:35 (twenty years ago)

Bah, I will also be in foreign parts for these. Well, more foreign.

I suspect I never knew what Shimura curves were, though it's probably an unprovable assertion.

Also, have a great time, both of you!

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 9 May 2005 14:36 (twenty years ago)

(I meant shimura curves, not Anna's role. Honest.)

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Monday, 9 May 2005 14:54 (twenty years ago)

I think it works for both...

Pete (Pete), Monday, 9 May 2005 14:56 (twenty years ago)

Very droll, Ned.

Anything to keep Monday morning from sitting on my head, good sir.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 9 May 2005 14:59 (twenty years ago)

I think it is like the red swirl in a raspberry ripple. At least I hope it is.

I'll do my best to get to the windmill

beanz (beanz), Monday, 9 May 2005 15:33 (twenty years ago)

MATHROCK IS BACK! DONUT ADJUST YOUR GEOMETRY SET!

Momus (Momus), Monday, 9 May 2005 16:21 (twenty years ago)

You shall be punished for for that pun.

Ed (dali), Monday, 9 May 2005 16:35 (twenty years ago)

When are you actually on stage at the brixton gig. I'm camping that weekend and won't be back in town by 4 but I will be later on.

Ed (dali), Monday, 9 May 2005 16:54 (twenty years ago)

PLZ SING 'BAD UNCLE' OK

The Irrelevant Man (Negativa) (Barima), Monday, 9 May 2005 17:10 (twenty years ago)

(hey Tom, I'll totally do a supergroup with you)
(cue my wife and Ally screaming "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO")

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 9 May 2005 17:19 (twenty years ago)

(wow my last post could be misoncstrued in one very specific awful way)

The Ghost of I'm Not Trying To Push Up On Bad English (Dan Perry), Monday, 9 May 2005 17:23 (twenty years ago)

Blimey, you lot didn't mess around! Seems like you only formed a couple of weeks ago.

I'm pretty sure I can come to this...

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 9 May 2005 19:21 (twenty years ago)

hey Tom, I'll totally do a supergroup with you

Hmmm. Can I write the liner notes?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 9 May 2005 19:30 (twenty years ago)

Kate, can we use that picture Andrew posted as a logo?

Anna (Anna), Monday, 9 May 2005 19:48 (twenty years ago)

You'll look like a White Stripes tribute band, I'm warning you.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 9 May 2005 19:49 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, that is where I nicked it from, sorry.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 9 May 2005 21:18 (twenty years ago)

Ha I've managed to get an army together to come to the Liverpool venue

oh be scared

Ste (Fuzzy), Monday, 9 May 2005 22:08 (twenty years ago)

Ahhh, girls with computers, isn't that sweet! Do you want me to install Tetris for you?

Come Back Johnny B (Johnney B), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 06:40 (twenty years ago)

xpost.. a 7 nation army?

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 08:38 (twenty years ago)

There's half a chance I may be in Liverpool for that gig.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 08:40 (twenty years ago)

Barlow, for that gratuitous sexualist remark, I hereby sentence you to be forcibly clapped in irons and made to listen to an unending loop of Doctor Spin's unforgettable 1992 top ten smash hit single "Tetris" until you be deaf.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 08:41 (twenty years ago)

FAP Ed?

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 08:55 (twenty years ago)

Mathsrock my dear pomposity? More like mathsPOP. Laptop mathspop. Lappop. (I believe we are supporting a Scandinavian band but I'm not sure if they are Lapps)

A shimura curve is not as good for cryptographic applications as certain elliptic ones.

But the proof of Fermat's Last Theorem prooved that Shimura Curves (modular curves or multi-dimensional toruses (tori?)) ARE Eliptic Curves! They are one and the same! Because any actual solution contradicting FLT would be by its very nature Eliptical - yet an eliptical equation which would be utterly impossible in Modular Maths - HYPERDIMENSIONAL DONUTS HAVE SAVED MATHS!!!!

Or, erm, something.

I very much encourage the liberation of Anna's inner Diva. That's why I'm always getting her drunk.

There is a better illustration of a Shimura Curve in google... there's even lovlier ones in one of my books about symmetry. But we can't use the raspberry swirl lollipop logo for our logo because it looks too much like the Lollies' logo. :-( From Lollies to Donuts, all by advanced mathematics. Hurrah!

I will find out about timings and things. And post here again.

The Square Root Of Negative Two (kate), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 11:07 (twenty years ago)

Argh, I'm not sure I can make this now as I have to go to a party the previous night and dance until 8.30am. What time are you guys on?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 17:39 (twenty years ago)

Barlow, for that gratuitous sexualist remark, I hereby sentence you to be forcibly clapped in irons and made to listen to an unending loop of Doctor Spin's unforgettable 1992 top ten smash hit single "Tetris" until you be deaf.

Marcello, I have no doubt he would enjoy that. Well, maybe not the deaf bit.

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 17:45 (twenty years ago)

Blimey! Our thread is moving, while I'm sitting at rehearsal.

I think we shall be on about 6-ish. As in the BBQ starts sometime between 4 and 5 and we are the first band on. So, quite early, yes. (Which means we get to drink!)

Ah, the bandmates have stopped smoking fags so we must do some rehearsing now.

The Square Root Of Negative Two (kate), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 18:49 (twenty years ago)

I love Brit slang.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 18:52 (twenty years ago)

OK! Well, I gave up on trying to book accommodation for Saturday night after Charlie's Autofire gig, so I will be getting a coach back to Oxford at one in the morning and so will do my very best to come up to London for Shimura Curves...I may be very sleepy however! Does the Windmill serve coffee????

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 18:54 (twenty years ago)

(Ned don't forget 8th july)

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 18:58 (twenty years ago)

you playing a gig then Dr.C?

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 18:58 (twenty years ago)

:-D I shall not, that would be wrong of me! I will demand FAP rock.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 18:59 (twenty years ago)

6 is kind of ideal :)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 19:06 (twenty years ago)

Is there an afternoon show in Liverpool? I'm in work at 3 but I'd like to make it down if I could.

Matt (Matt), Thursday, 19 May 2005 09:35 (twenty years ago)

Liverpool schedule

it says they are on 3:30 on that site

Ste (Fuzzy), Thursday, 19 May 2005 09:37 (twenty years ago)

That's me buggered then.

Matt (Matt), Thursday, 19 May 2005 09:38 (twenty years ago)

but also 7pm at Flanagans

Ste (Fuzzy), Thursday, 19 May 2005 09:39 (twenty years ago)

Nahh, I'm on a 3-finish, which means I'll be out about one or two a.m.

Matt (Matt), Thursday, 19 May 2005 09:42 (twenty years ago)

Blimey, that's an insane schedule, Matt.

After rehearsal last night, I'm getting more and more excited for how good this will sound. But also nervous and scared because my hair is much more crap than everyone else's. But then again, I can hide behind the laptop while the other chiX0rs do their Bananarama impression (this is so cool it has to be seen to be believed.)

I bought my gig outfit this morning at a charity shop. It is black and silver and swhirly and includes a frock coat. Heh heh.

The Square Root Of Negative Two (kate), Thursday, 19 May 2005 11:54 (twenty years ago)

**you playing a gig then Dr.C?**

Yes, Bull&Gate.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 19 May 2005 15:33 (twenty years ago)

Oh God, I was planning on wearing hotpants. We are so not going to match.

That's a real shame Matt. I was looking forward to meeting you guys up there.

Anna (Anna), Thursday, 19 May 2005 15:36 (twenty years ago)

Will they let me in if I am slightly stinky and wearing an orange boiler suit?

Ed (dali), Thursday, 19 May 2005 16:35 (twenty years ago)

Admittedly this will look like I have come from Return to the source rather than a farm in the country but hey.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 19 May 2005 16:36 (twenty years ago)

Are you all actually travelling up on the Saturday? Cos if it's Friday I'm off and can show you some dens of iniquity (ironically I'm actually in London on the thursday, this week is fucked).

Matt (Matt), Thursday, 19 May 2005 17:08 (twenty years ago)

Will they let me in if I am slightly stinky and wearing an orange boiler suit?

Is this some kind of young offender chic?

I would love to come to the Sunday show but I don't think I can.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 19 May 2005 17:16 (twenty years ago)

Will they let me in if I am slightly stinky and wearing an orange boiler suit?

Dubya finally caught up with you, then?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 19 May 2005 18:22 (twenty years ago)

hoy Coastaltown! if yr in London on the Thursday are you available for the drinking of adult beverages?

Porkpie (porkpie), Thursday, 19 May 2005 20:40 (twenty years ago)

**Oh God, I was planning on wearing hotpants.**

You must, Anna!

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 20 May 2005 06:10 (twenty years ago)

It may well be doable Chris, I just have to check train times.

Matt (Matt), Friday, 20 May 2005 08:27 (twenty years ago)

Orange boiler suit will be fine at the Windmill! Farmer chic goes down really well there!

Hot pants will be GREAT. Are you going to wear them with fishnets, Anna? Because I was thinking of pairing my frock coat with a miniskirt (might actually be shorter than the coat) and fishnets but fishnets might be "out" at the moment, I know nothing about this fashion stuff.

I don't actually know *how* let alone when we are getting to Liverpool. I thought the Kissing Time would give us a ride, but they're being rubbish. :-( Can any of you *drive*? Fancy a road trip, being a roading and driving two lovely young girls to Liverpool? (ha-HEM, OK, one lovely young girl and me, rather.)

The Square Root Of Negative Two (kate), Friday, 20 May 2005 09:59 (twenty years ago)

hey, we're not rubbish! we're just going to camp out in front of Paul's House and sing Wings songs. "Give Ireland back to the eyeeeee-RISH!" etc. Did you really want to be there for that?

Catty (Catty), Friday, 20 May 2005 10:53 (twenty years ago)

This makes you DOUBLY rubbish. :-P

The Square Root Of Negative Two (kate), Friday, 20 May 2005 10:54 (twenty years ago)

Mary had a little lamb.... everybody!

Catty (Catty), Friday, 20 May 2005 10:56 (twenty years ago)

What is the easiest way to get to Liverpool? Anyone? I suppose I should book tickets now if we're going by train.

The Square Root Of Negative Two (kate), Friday, 20 May 2005 11:15 (twenty years ago)

Train is by far the easiest way, Lime Street station is smack bang in the center of town, and you'll probably not have to change at all from London Euston.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Friday, 20 May 2005 11:37 (twenty years ago)

No, you won't.

Matt (Matt), Friday, 20 May 2005 11:42 (twenty years ago)

Dammit, I can find the trains that I want but it won't tell me how much they cost or how to book them, grrrrr.

The Square Root Of Negative Two (kate), Friday, 20 May 2005 11:44 (twenty years ago)

Maybe here?

http://www.virgintrains.co.uk/default.aspx

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Friday, 20 May 2005 12:16 (twenty years ago)

08457484950

that's either virgin trains or national rail info. either way, it will help you.

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 20 May 2005 12:18 (twenty years ago)

Please, please, please, does anyone that is coming tomorrow have a guitar tuner that I can borrow?

I lost my gig bag on a nightbus last night and I'm gutted.

The Square Root Of Negative Two (kate), Saturday, 21 May 2005 12:30 (twenty years ago)

Um revive. Please come.

Anna (Anna), Sunday, 22 May 2005 10:08 (twenty years ago)

okay. since you asked nicely.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Sunday, 22 May 2005 10:52 (twenty years ago)

oh shit lost gigbag! i have a tuner somewhere, it might be buried in the abyss under the bed though. i will look. you should be able to get to liverpool and back for a tenner each way on virgin if you book early enough.

emsk, Sunday, 22 May 2005 10:58 (twenty years ago)

Did you play last night? How did it go?

May not be in time for the early show due to 'all-day-sesh-fear' but will certainly be there for the evening session in Liverpool at Flanagans.

Ste (Fuzzy), Monday, 23 May 2005 07:43 (twenty years ago)

Sorry I didn't make this - I was pretty miserable and tired yesterday after someone gave up their seat to me on a bus thinking I wz pregnant (nb I took the seat anyway) - just what you want to hear after week and a half of proper diet and couple of days of filth. Diet starts again properly now :(

Lucretia My Reflection (Lucretia My Reflection), Monday, 23 May 2005 08:19 (twenty years ago)

I was working in my office when the pop fun happened :(

Tom (Groke), Monday, 23 May 2005 08:29 (twenty years ago)

I have an awful hangover.

Anna (Anna), Monday, 23 May 2005 08:32 (twenty years ago)

1. I couldn't stop smiling.
2. The band look great, sound great, are great.
3. Anna sang 'Bad Uncle' for me all accapella like (cue giggling from me).

Pain, the pain of a monkey (Barima), Monday, 23 May 2005 09:57 (twenty years ago)

Shimura Curves = fantastic! They all looked super-hott and they sounded like Sugababes-meet-Magnetic Fields. And I have a demo in my bag so when they become the UK's biggest girl group I get to flog it for several grandtreasure it as a memento of their first gig forever.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 23 May 2005 10:11 (twenty years ago)

Grr, couldn't come to this as was moving this weekend. Please say someone took a bootleg?

Come Back Johnny B (Johnney B), Monday, 23 May 2005 10:22 (twenty years ago)

Are there any mp3s of this online? Send me a demo, plz!!

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 23 May 2005 10:23 (twenty years ago)

several days of alcoholic overindulgence prevented me from attending, for which i am very sorry. next time!

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 23 May 2005 10:25 (twenty years ago)

i have a blurry photo since i didn't use a flash. but it looks kinda cool! very shoegazer...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Monday, 23 May 2005 10:48 (twenty years ago)

sorry, i couldnt come. i was also paying the price for a weekends overindulgencestudy

charltonlido (gareth), Monday, 23 May 2005 10:54 (twenty years ago)

Oh my god, we look HOTT!!! (If I may say so myself.) I mean, we look like a BAND there.

Thank you to everyone who came out - especially those of you who were rocking such bad hangovers you got on the wrong busses. ;-)

I had a great, great time. Shame on those of you who missed it, because it really was fantastic (for once in my life, I'm not going to be all modest; I think that my bandmates are freaking great and they RAWK!!!) But next time. There *will* be a next time, we decided it was too fun not to do again. And play on a stage big enough to have The Lex and Barima and The Spy come up and be our dancing boys.

I managed not to lose a thing for a change! Except who has my batteries? And my plectra? Where are my safety pins?

"Sugababes meets Magnetic Fields" is the best compliment, ever. Someone else said we sounded like St.Etienne so I'm just really really glad that people are *getting* what we're trying to do.

I think that Rob got some video of us - I don't know about other bootlegs. Unfortunately our demo only has me singing on it which is not as good as the full band. We should record a proper demo - but what songs? Everyone seemed to really like "Stronger" and "Sexxx Viking" (since I'm not allowed to call it by its real name - or maybe I should just call it The Spy which would make everybody happy.)

I am so happy!

The Square Root Of Negative Two (kate), Monday, 23 May 2005 11:20 (twenty years ago)

Oh my god, please tell me there is a cheaper way to get to Liverpool than to pay #110. I'm sorry, Anna, but we're going by National Express if that's really the price. Eep!

The Square Root Of Negative Two (kate), Monday, 23 May 2005 11:48 (twenty years ago)

If you're all going up to Liverpool, and it's 110 quid each, surely it would be cheaper to hire a car between the (looks at pic) four of you?

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 23 May 2005 11:50 (twenty years ago)

Only two of us are going. That's what I was thinking last night, but the problem is that neither of us can drive, and we don't KNOW anyone who can drive (who is willing to go to Liverpool for the weekend).

I know, this is my own fault for not booking a lot earlier but I didn't know for sure how many people were going until last week. :-(

The Square Root Of Negative Two (kate), Monday, 23 May 2005 11:52 (twenty years ago)

If you go before 4 or after 6 (or any time on saturday and sunday) it is cheaper (£55).

Ed (dali), Monday, 23 May 2005 11:53 (twenty years ago)

Who's going to which of the Liverpool gigs?

How can it possibly be 110 pounds to get a train to Liverpool? That's crazy.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Monday, 23 May 2005 11:54 (twenty years ago)

Ah, but £55 + £55 is £110, dumkopf.

You could always check the price of vlm airways.

Ed (dali), Monday, 23 May 2005 11:54 (twenty years ago)

Oh and as far as going by coach goes, if you return on sunday by train you will start off on a coach.

Ed (dali), Monday, 23 May 2005 11:55 (twenty years ago)

Oh! It's #110 for *both* of us? Oh, that's better. I thought it was #110 EACH.

The Square Root Of Negative Two (kate), Monday, 23 May 2005 11:56 (twenty years ago)

you can write it off against tax (?)

N_RQ, Monday, 23 May 2005 11:59 (twenty years ago)

I am the dumkopf, not kate, obv.

Ed (dali), Monday, 23 May 2005 12:01 (twenty years ago)

Kate, coach is fine. Call me tonight. Eoin and I said we'd talk about car things when sober. he can actually drive, but, living in London, hasn't for ages. I think he thinks he's not capable of driving that far.

Anna (Anna), Monday, 23 May 2005 12:07 (twenty years ago)

If you do drive, go M40, M5, M6, M56; not M1, M6, M62.

Ed (dali), Monday, 23 May 2005 12:11 (twenty years ago)

Kate, you should now have a YSI email from me to d/l the video

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Monday, 23 May 2005 12:24 (twenty years ago)

I'd've said "All four Sugababes fronting The Shortwave Set", but no one else knows who the latter are (they like laptops and samples of folk and psych and other things too). But the smart among you will soon, oh yes.

The Irrelevant Man (Negativa) (Barima), Monday, 23 May 2005 15:13 (twenty years ago)

Argh, argh, I am having so much trouble doing anything today. My regular web cafe isn't open so I'm using the expensive one, my phone is out of money, and I can't find a webpage for Sixt rentacar. Oh wait. There it is. This might actually be cheaper...

The Square Root Of Negative Two (kate), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 13:56 (twenty years ago)

Call me and let me know. I don't feel very well, so may leave work early.

(In fact I probably will, as I'm loosing my voice - not so practical for Saturday.)

Anna (Anna), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 14:04 (twenty years ago)

Can't call you! No credit left on phone! Just emailed you! Leaving web cafe in ten minutes, and oh no, drink some honey tea to sort your voice out! Please don't get sick! Oh no!

The Square Root Of Negative Two (kate), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 14:11 (twenty years ago)

I'll send you all good vibes - by the sound of it you'll need it . . .

Come Back Johnny B (Johnney B), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 14:18 (twenty years ago)

Just picked up mail. Feel like a pig bag. Have ceased smoking and am leaving work early to got to bed.

Anna (Anna), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 14:25 (twenty years ago)

This all sounds like much musical goodness.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 14:25 (twenty years ago)

It does sound like fun, hopefully there'll be some mp3s soon.

Leon Federline (Ex Leon), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 14:28 (twenty years ago)

What a great day! More gigs should be combined with bbqs...that was totally ace!

Oh and thanks to Miss AMP I know what Nathan Barley looks like, i.e., me!

MarkH (MarkH), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 16:43 (twenty years ago)

I can't believe I never noticed the MarkH/Nathan lookylike thing before! Well spotted, AMPy! Are we ever going to see those photos, then?

Feel better, Anna... I hope...

Yes, gigs with BBQs are the way of the future. Tim said we could come back any time - BUT WE'VE GOT TO GO ON AFTER 7 coz Frances works!

BWAH HAH HAH HAH HAH HAH HAH!!!

That is great!

The Square Root Of Negative Two (kate), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 16:05 (twenty years ago)

I had a dream about the Shimura Curves last night, despite never hearing/ seeing them.

The gig was in what seemed to be like a village hall, and there were only a dozen or so people there. The stage was done out like an 80s TOTP with a glittering floor. Kate was sitting behind this ENORMOUS desk with some of the coolest knobs and dials I've ever seen and every time she pressed something this enormous WHOOSH! would happen and the music would go mad. On a different level (oh yes, there are levels) were three backing singers doing handclaps and the such, and there was a female lead singer with these fantastic nu-wave vocals soaring over the top of the tunes. The music sounded amazing as well - it was like shoegazing-meets-happy-hardcore, only really interesting with elctro-twiddly bits and everything. Really great stuff.

I went backstage afterwards, and although none of the band was there, the stage manager was, and she was exceedingly cute, and in a proof that dreams are very weird indeed and bear no relation to reality, I walked up to her bold as brass, started chatting, and got her number!

Come Back Johnny B (Johnney B), Thursday, 26 May 2005 08:54 (twenty years ago)

Man, my life is better in your dreams than in my actual life... :-/

No, wait. That's what we *do* sound like. No, really!

The Square Root Of Negative Two (kate), Thursday, 26 May 2005 12:10 (twenty years ago)

You ACTUALLY sound like shoegazer-meets-happy-hardcore with electro-ponce-twiddly bits and nu-wave vocals? And handclapping?

OMG.

(maybe it's just I know you too well that I can construct the kind of music that you make without hearing any of it!)

Come Back Johnny B (Johnney B), Thursday, 26 May 2005 12:13 (twenty years ago)

Well, replace the "happy hardcore" with "bad electrocrass" and "unhappy house" and that's us, yeah.

The Square Root Of Negative Two (kate), Thursday, 26 May 2005 12:17 (twenty years ago)

You should try adding happy house, cos the music in my dream was the best music ever. And your desk had this weird gear stick thing that had about twenty gears, and you kept moving them with no discernable effect on the sound. Have you got one of them?

Come Back Johnny B (Johnney B), Thursday, 26 May 2005 12:18 (twenty years ago)

Ha ha, yes, I have one of those on my MIDI controller keyboard - except it *does* control the sound - it's a modwheel which does GRATE things to gates and filters on synthsounds and things.

Except your dream of my synth sounds a *lot* like Frances' *actual* synth.

The Square Root Of Negative Two (kate), Thursday, 26 May 2005 12:23 (twenty years ago)

Psychic twenty dimensional pan pot.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 26 May 2005 12:24 (twenty years ago)

If you are in Liverpool, please come tomorrow!

(And to clear up some confusion on other threads, only Kate posts as Shimura Curve, I've stuck with Anna throughout my Ilxing life.)

Anna (Anna), Friday, 27 May 2005 12:47 (twenty years ago)

Ormskirk Massive - I really want to meet you.

Anna (Anna), Friday, 27 May 2005 12:50 (twenty years ago)

What other thread? Eep!

Yes, please come if you are in Liverpool!

Whatever are we going to wear, Anna?

The Square Root Of Negative Two (kate), Friday, 27 May 2005 12:50 (twenty years ago)

Dave B can come down in his victory suit.

Ed (dali), Friday, 27 May 2005 13:00 (twenty years ago)

Um, the staying friends with exes one.

It's too hot for tights, so that throws the shorts out. I'm thinking cocktail dress (just not sure on which one).

I feel like I should dress up for your show.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 27 May 2005 13:08 (twenty years ago)

Actually last Sunday I did feel a bit "Tonight Matthew, I'm going to be Alison Goldfrapp"

Anna (Anna), Friday, 27 May 2005 13:10 (twenty years ago)

I shall be there tomorrow to witness this poptacular show! with my army of bitches, yay

Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 27 May 2005 13:56 (twenty years ago)

so you'd better be bloody good

;)

Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 27 May 2005 14:25 (twenty years ago)

I'm not happy that I'm unable to make this. Sodding work.

Matt (Matt), Friday, 27 May 2005 18:24 (twenty years ago)

it's urgent and key that you play a london show when i'm not working the late shift please now please...will you come play early doors in July at the place wot i work at?

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Friday, 27 May 2005 18:30 (twenty years ago)

I'll be there, what time is it all kicking off?

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Saturday, 28 May 2005 10:13 (twenty years ago)

Actually last Sunday I did feel a bit "Tonight Matthew, I'm going to be Alison Goldfrapp"

I'm still disappointed you turned down my request for the air hostess outfit.

Negativa, True Believer (You know you love it when I'm dressed in drag) (Barima), Saturday, 28 May 2005 13:03 (twenty years ago)

ooh in half an hour, don't think I'll make the Cavern but I'll be in time for the Flanagan show at 7pm.

I'll try and take some pics too

Ste (Fuzzy), Saturday, 28 May 2005 13:11 (twenty years ago)

I'll be at the Flanagans show too, I'll be the sole representative of the Ormskirk Massive.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Saturday, 28 May 2005 13:24 (twenty years ago)

Supoib night.

Yay for the 'Curves! and yay again for meeting the band, well half of the band, Anna and Kate. My first ever ilx irl moment.

The rest of the IPO night resulted in visits to the Lennon bar (yeah thanks for turning the jukebox off just as my Golden Brown was about to come on) and the Cavern I think, things got a bit blurry after 10pm.

Ste (Fuzzy), Sunday, 29 May 2005 19:31 (twenty years ago)

How do I not have a hangover?

Great night, the band were ace, Kate and Anna were great, pity the others couldn't make it, nice drinks in the Stag afterwards then surreal buffet fun at that party. I was quite drunk at that point.

I can't believe Paul and Celeste got there just as they finished, we now want to do a Lynskey supports the 'Curves gig.

Probably shouldn't have stayed up till light watching Ghostbusters when got back to mine though...

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Sunday, 29 May 2005 20:14 (twenty years ago)

I'm hugely jealous of Kate and Anna now. Can we send a busload of Ormskirk mentalists down to London at some point this summer?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 29 May 2005 20:29 (twenty years ago)

Kate and Anna missed out on Ghostbusters as we had to leave them enjoying the delights of Liverpool. But we'd love to come to the big smoke, I ear the streets are paved with ilxors.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Sunday, 29 May 2005 20:41 (twenty years ago)

This was great! I had the best weekend. It was really good to meet you guys, thank you so much for coming down. Ilx - you should head to Ormskirk, they're really cool people, especially as they still wanted to talk to us having seen me wave a stolen lilly around on stage, blathering on about pretending to be Morrissey (I was a bit drunk by the time of the second gig).

We went to the Summer of Love exhibition at Tate Liverpool the next day. I also recommend that.

Anna (Anna), Monday, 30 May 2005 11:52 (twenty years ago)

Indeedy, as the locals would say "da' waz ded boss da'". Some sort of London trip will have to be done this summer, hopefully involving the whole lot of us Ormites and a gig or something. MattDC - you missed out on MattCoastal who was down there last weekend.

On one hand I've got myself to blame (Lynskey), Monday, 30 May 2005 12:02 (twenty years ago)

Wow! How much fun was Liverpool!?!?!? That was GRATE!!! OK, it was nerve-wracking playing with only half the band, but Anna definitely rose to the occasion and turned into the world's flirtiest frontwoman, abuse of lillies and all.

HURRAH!!! for the Ormskirk Massive! It was so great to meet you! (Celeste had the greatest shirt on, she could have been a Curve too) and yes! There shall be ILXorpallooza in London soon.

Liverpuddlians are sooo friendly. Including Anna's dancing fan, heh heh. and the random couple who accosted us after the gig. And veggie fry-ups and mandolin jams with Eoin's (did I spell that right? I keep calling him E-I-E-I-Owen) parents. And the landlords of the White Star asking us to do an impromptu gig in the back room and plying us with amazing CAMRA bitters.

The CHEEEEEEEESE buffet was like an aftershow dream come true. And Paul and I singing bad Pink Floyd in poor Jimmy's ears, heh. The Lynskey Curves, heh.

Hurrah!!!!

The Square Root Of Negative Two (kate), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 10:36 (twenty years ago)

So what happened to the other half of the band?

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 10:44 (twenty years ago)

They were participating in a Karaoke competition for Miss AMP's birthday.

Why she can't have her birthday the second week of April like the rest of us, I just don't understand...

The Square Root Of Negative Two (kate), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 10:47 (twenty years ago)

I thought you did just wonderfully anyway.

Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 11:05 (twenty years ago)

I suspect this is building up to a full scale invasion of London by Ormskirk.

Matt (Matt), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 11:08 (twenty years ago)

We are planning on having ILXorpollooza. Ned, when are you going to be in London? We should plan it for that weekend!

The Square Root Of Negative Two (kate), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 11:10 (twenty years ago)

50% of the 'Curves but still the full on 'Curves experience indeed.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 11:15 (twenty years ago)

I'm certainly intrigued as to what 100% Curves would be like

Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 11:18 (twenty years ago)

Possibly too Curvey for me...

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 11:23 (twenty years ago)

Play London again soon! No wait, play again at a sufficiently removed date that the flights are cheap!

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 11:26 (twenty years ago)

**We are planning on having ILXorpollooza. Ned, when are you going to be in London? We should plan it for that weekend!**

I think Ned arrives on July 8th. We are playing the B&G that night - why don't the Shimura Curves try and get on the bill too? That would be spectacular!

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 11:30 (twenty years ago)

I can and will arrange some sort of Manchester leg too - everyone interested please email me - paul a/t/ bilblio d/o/t/ nildram d/o/t/ co d/o/t/ uk (bilblio IS the correct spelling). Although obviously I don't have any details yet what with the idea being so young.

Tigrics and Si-Cut.db at the Font on July the 6th with ILX DJ's though - curated and instigated by yours truly.

On one hand I've got myself to blame (Lynskey), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 12:16 (twenty years ago)

Come and play Nottingham - I don't promote but I can get you in contact with folks who do - plus, I will get you all very drunk and you can stay at my house. (Kate, I honestly can't remember if I have ever met you - I'm thinking not, but I know we have some dirty dronerock boys in common).

emil.y (emil.y), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 12:50 (twenty years ago)

Bull and Gate for 8th July? Argh, I said I was never playing that place again, but ah well, an ILX0rpollooza would be great. Can you mention to them that you might have some other bands that would want to play? I hate cold-calling venues... eep.

Manchester, yes, obv count us in, Paul.

And Emily, I can't remember if we have met... we might have? But it would have been very boozy.

Ha har, after telling Miss AMP (I am round the Plan B house at the moment) how much fun we had in Liddypool, she's all "I want to tour now! Humph!" so of course we have to now.

The Square Root Of Negative Two (kate), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 14:02 (twenty years ago)

Say hello to the pair of them. I plan on drinking pink wine tonight.

Anna (Anna), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 14:04 (twenty years ago)

Pink wine, mmmmmm...

The Square Root Of Negative Two (kate), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 14:04 (twenty years ago)

Say hi to them from me too! Hopefully Barima and I will get to be your dancers one day.

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 14:08 (twenty years ago)

N_RQ, Wednesday, 1 June 2005 14:11 (twenty years ago)

TOUR! TOUR! TOUR! TOUR!

On one hand I've got myself to blame (Lynskey), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 14:13 (twenty years ago)

You know what? Don't encourage me. If I don't get another job, and I get thrown out of my flat, I'll just go On Tour for the rest of my life and all of you will be stuck with me on your couches in sequence for ever!

The Square Root Of Negative Two (kate), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 14:15 (twenty years ago)

careful you don't take this jason pierce thing too far...

N_RQ, Wednesday, 1 June 2005 14:26 (twenty years ago)

Bwah hah hah!

Frances just wandered in, said to say hello and then demanded "What should I weeeaaaaarrrrrr tonight?"

(She is playing a solo show at Barden's tonight if anyone fancies coming along - hope she doesn't kill me for posting this.)

The Square Root Of Negative Two (kate), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 14:30 (twenty years ago)

Kate - I have asked our singer to email/phone Andy at the B&G as he knows him best. It would be great if this could happen - will keep you posted. The next step will be that they will want a demo CD, I guess, unless he remembers you from before.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 14:40 (twenty years ago)

Cool! Thanks, Rocktor C! I've just burned a demo CD. I will send it tomorrow, along with a request that we play with Fractured on the 8th. (I will also try and point out that I did play there loads with The Lollies and also the Kissing Time.)

The Square Root Of Negative Two (kate), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 14:43 (twenty years ago)

Hold on! Just spoke to singer - he said we're not definitely playing the B&G on July 8th. It was in my diary too! He is going to sort something out, so it might be the 8th, or more likely I guess another date. Hold off for a few days and we'll get it sorted. Sorry!

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 14:51 (twenty years ago)

Argh! Well, I will send the CD, regardless, so at least he has it. What dates is Ned in town?

The Square Root Of Negative Two (kate), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 14:53 (twenty years ago)

You can say you want play with us if you want to, and that Jeff (our singer) will be getting in touch with him in the next day or so. Your call!

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 15:20 (twenty years ago)

Charlie, could you actually get the Shimura Curves on at Hedonistic? If so, you should totally do it. Make it some kind of marathon ILX night.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 21:21 (twenty years ago)

I have sent CDs to everyone suggested. The Bull & Gate (sorry if I dropped Fractured's name in it, Dr. C) And also to Andrew at Club Hedonistic (sorry if I dropped your name in it, Charlie.)

My notes never make any sense. Perhaps I shouldn't send them and should just send the CD, but I always think you should play "I know someone who knows someone who knows you!" when trying to book gigs. It seems to help.

The Square Root Of Negative Two (kate), Thursday, 2 June 2005 13:12 (twenty years ago)

You won't have dropped us in it - Andy likes us. Hopefully something will be sorted datewise soon.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 3 June 2005 08:32 (twenty years ago)

When are you ladeez going to play in Cambridge huh?!!

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Friday, 3 June 2005 08:35 (twenty years ago)

(hehe, probably when you organise it pink ;))

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 3 June 2005 09:43 (twenty years ago)

Damnit!! You could've played Strawberry Fair tomorrow!

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Friday, 3 June 2005 09:46 (twenty years ago)

hahaha omg roffle that'd be PERFECT

N_RQ, Friday, 3 June 2005 09:47 (twenty years ago)

Exactly!!

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Friday, 3 June 2005 09:51 (twenty years ago)

Kate - it looks like we can't play the B&G until Sept 3 (Saturday). Yes, I know it's ages, but due to everyone having different hols times and stuff, we can't do it before then. If you can wait until then maybe that could be the date of the ILX-fest with with The Shimura Curves and us. Andy Bull&Gate has said that he's happy to put us both on. You'd have to confirm separately with him though. Hopefully he can get one or two other good bands, and maybe we'll see if I Ludicrous are up for it.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 07:47 (twenty years ago)

I meant to say also, if Sept is too far away, or the whole thing doesn't appeal, I quite understand...no problem!

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 07:49 (twenty years ago)

September's Not So Far Away

charltonlido (gareth), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 07:54 (twenty years ago)

Say hi to them from me too! Hopefully Barima and I will get to be your dancers one day.

Yes, well, a little proviso here: you, Magnus and I would have to be dressed as Busted.

Negativa, True Believer (You know you love it when I'm dressed in drag) (Barima), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 09:40 (twenty years ago)

Oh, blimey, Dr. C that sounds complicated. I mean, I thought the whole point was to have ILXorpallooza when Ned was in town. It would still be fun to play together, though, even in September, even if it's not NedFAP.

Sssshhh, Barima, you have stumbled upon my (not so) Secret Sex Fantasy.

The Square Root Of Negative Two (kate), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 12:18 (twenty years ago)

This is why the band need those Air Hostess outfits. But you said no! I called you at 3am, but David picked up and I was all like, "Who's David?" and he just said "Kate still says no to the air hostess outfits" and now I'm sleeping with the lights on. You have ruined my (not so) Secret Stage Fantasy.

B4rim4 "Eyebrows" N (Barima), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 12:27 (twenty years ago)

x-post Yes, I know. I *thought* we were definitely playing July 8, but it seems that it was never happening. But anyway, if you're still up for Sept 3, just give the B&G a call and it'll happen!! I hope it does.

Dr.C, Tuesday, 7 June 2005 13:12 (twenty years ago)

Do you always address Miss AMP as Miss AMP? "Chuck us a packets of crisps, Miss Ay Emm Pee" "what time are you coming over tonight, Miss Ay Emm Pee?"

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 14:06 (twenty years ago)

I more imagined that they just shout the word 'amp'.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 14:07 (twenty years ago)

Errr... Yes! RAWKtor C. Have spoken to the B&G and we are tentatively pencilled in for the 3rd September with you. (Just to speak to those other losers my lovely bandmates to make sure that no one has a life.)

And note to Barry - we generally just call her Amp. Or "Ampie" if we're feeling luvved up. Or MISS PAIN!!! if she's in trouble. ;-)

The Square Root Of Negative Two (kate), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 12:32 (twenty years ago)

I'm putting on a gig on the 6th of July in Manchester with one London act and one, erm, Hungarian act (and Affectian and co DJ'ing). If it goes well and I can get return bookings I'll sort something out for the ILX massif. If this one is anything to go by I should be able to contribute dosh towards travel etc. and places to crash are avaliable.

Email the Gmail if you're interested. I'll put something up on the Bands thread in a sec too.

On one hand I've got myself to blame (Lynskey), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 13:09 (twenty years ago)

where in Manchester Lynskey?

Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 13:10 (twenty years ago)

The Font Bar (by Oxford Road station - the one with the big Playstation 2/TV setup upstairs). Do you know it?

On one hand I've got myself to blame (Lynskey), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 14:00 (twenty years ago)

To answer for Lynskey it's going to be at Font Bar. The co. in question should be Tag and Piscesboy. It'll be bonzah.

Buh, now pointless xpost.

Affectian (Affectian), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 14:01 (twenty years ago)

Yeah Font Bar is down a side street between Revolution bar and Thirsty Scholar on Oxford Road. Easy to find.

Affectian (Affectian), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 14:02 (twenty years ago)

**Errr... Yes! RAWKtor C. Have spoken to the B&G and we are tentatively pencilled in for the 3rd September with you. (Just to speak to those other losers my lovely bandmates to make sure that no one has a life.)**

Whooo - LONG LIVE ROCK AND ROLL!! This will be great!! I will get to see a Kateband. Lets make this a BIG event. We should be able to get quite a few along as we're probably only playing Brighton between now and then.

Dr C, Wednesday, 8 June 2005 14:02 (twenty years ago)

And I can offer a couch for one or two homeless Ilxors providing they don't rob me or torture my haughty three-legged cat (I live in Didsbury though, bit of a way out of town but plenty of buses).

Affectian (Affectian), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 14:04 (twenty years ago)

yeah i know where this is. cool i maybe able to make this. although, what with it being a school night are we talking normal bar hours or a late session?

Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 14:08 (twenty years ago)

Somewhere between the two - my plan is to get the two bands -

Si-Cut.db
http://home.earthlink.net/~efrans/benford/sicut.html
and
Tigrics
http://www.pararadio.hu/tigrics/

. . . . done by about 11. I think the licence is for 1 o'clock but I'll check.

On one hand I've got myself to blame (Lynskey), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 14:16 (twenty years ago)

Well, depending on my job situation/band situation/if I'm even alive situation, I'd be up for playing in Manchester, and can definitely get you London gig in return. Will email you about it.

The Square Root Of Negative Two (kate), Thursday, 9 June 2005 09:39 (twenty years ago)

three months pass...
Well, this thread is as good a place as any to announce this.

The Shimuras have lost a Curve. Frances has had to bow out due to lack of time and previous committments. We will miss her, and her freaky dancing, but The Shimuras will be continuing, though not in our present lineup.

So, er, yeah. We're looking for a new Shimura now. We need a lady who can sing harmonies (second soprano ideal) and also dance, and look fabulous in pretty dresses. Any suggestions or referrals would be greatly appreciated.

Paranoid Spice (kate), Thursday, 6 October 2005 11:00 (twenty years ago)

kate moss always wanted to be a rock star...

N_RQ, Thursday, 6 October 2005 11:04 (twenty years ago)

That is very sad. She was a good Curve. Good that you're continuing.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 6 October 2005 11:15 (twenty years ago)

I've heard Kate Moss "sing". She ain't never being a Curve.

Paranoid Spice (kate), Thursday, 6 October 2005 11:18 (twenty years ago)

she has no curves.

g-kit (g-kit), Thursday, 6 October 2005 11:25 (twenty years ago)

I want to hear Shimura Curves :(

Roxymuzak, Mrs. Carbohydrate (roxymuzak), Thursday, 6 October 2005 11:27 (twenty years ago)

Paranoid Spice (kate), Thursday, 6 October 2005 11:27 (twenty years ago)

(I trust you are "Shimura Curves" and not "THE Shimura Curves", like we are "Tenderhooks" and not "THE Tenderhooks"?)

Roxymuzak, Mrs. Carbohydrate (roxymuzak), Thursday, 6 October 2005 11:27 (twenty years ago)

OH SWEET! I can't wait to add you guys.

That haircut looks better on Frances ;-).

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 6 October 2005 11:39 (twenty years ago)

Ok, I've already added you to my myspace and Tenderhooks' myspace, listened to your songs, and logged a blog comment. :X

Roxymuzak, Mrs. Carbohydrate (roxymuzak), Thursday, 6 October 2005 11:39 (twenty years ago)

Blimey, that was quick!

(FWIW, I have nothing to do with the MySpace, it's AMP's baby.)

Paranoid Spice (kate), Thursday, 6 October 2005 11:43 (twenty years ago)

I can tell, because it isn't paisley.

haw

Roxymuzak, Mrs. Carbohydrate (roxymuzak), Thursday, 6 October 2005 11:43 (twenty years ago)

Do you have any CDs of your set Kate?

Panther Pink (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 6 October 2005 11:45 (twenty years ago)

mmmmmmmmmmmmmaybe...

Email me your address and I will pop one in the mail for you (now my CD player is finally fixed and I can burn you one)!

How is your cat, BTW, did his surgery go alright?

Paranoid Spice (kate), Thursday, 6 October 2005 11:52 (twenty years ago)

Check your email!

Panther Pink (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 6 October 2005 12:29 (twenty years ago)

Coo!

Paranoid Spice (kate), Thursday, 6 October 2005 12:31 (twenty years ago)

We need a lady who can sing harmonies (second soprano ideal) and also dance, and look fabulous in pretty dresses

Well I almost qualify, with the exception of um come to think of it no.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 6 October 2005 16:03 (twenty years ago)

haha it'd be great if Martin was in

Roxymuzak, Mrs. Carbohydrate (roxymuzak), Thursday, 6 October 2005 16:09 (twenty years ago)

Martin would totally bring in the "I Heart Summer Roberts" panties-wearing crowd.

BARMS, Thursday, 6 October 2005 18:31 (twenty years ago)

I have no idea what that means, but I deny any crowd-pulling abilities.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 6 October 2005 18:39 (twenty years ago)

"Thoughtworm" is totally, completely awesome.

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Thursday, 6 October 2005 18:41 (twenty years ago)

what does jon think of shimura curves? lol

lol, Thursday, 6 October 2005 21:55 (twenty years ago)

Thanks, Dan. :-)

Paranoid Spice (kate), Friday, 7 October 2005 06:53 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
So I guess we are on a record now. How exciting.

Lady Totteringby-Gently (kate), Monday, 14 November 2005 15:09 (twenty years ago)

Did you recruit Ann Widecombe in the end?

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Monday, 14 November 2005 15:27 (twenty years ago)

??!??!?

No, we recruited Marianna of this parish.

Lady Totteringby-Gently (kate), Monday, 14 November 2005 15:28 (twenty years ago)

(We are still trying to get Boris Johnson to do a guest appearance in one of our videos, though.)

Lady Totteringby-Gently (kate), Monday, 14 November 2005 15:29 (twenty years ago)

(img deleted)

Jdubz (ex machina), Monday, 14 November 2005 15:30 (twenty years ago)

I am happy to sub for Boris if need be. So what is the single then, the link makes it not so clear?

Pete (Pete), Monday, 14 November 2005 15:45 (twenty years ago)

Magnus. We I wanted Boris to play the lead in the video as the original is clearly not available.

(This is a joke! joke! Joke! before any of my bandmates (or indeed originals) read it)

Lady Totteringby-Gently (kate), Monday, 14 November 2005 15:48 (twenty years ago)

Oh, that came out all wrong, argggh, stupid me. Now I wish I hadn't said anything.

Lady Totteringby-Gently (kate), Monday, 14 November 2005 15:50 (twenty years ago)

Anyway, all of this is purely hypothetical at this stage, and even if we ever get to the point of actually making any videos (I mean, yeah, like Buml0ve Rec0rds are going to give us a video budget) I'm sure I will be outvoted and we'll end up with Alan Rickman in all our videos for some reason.

Lady Totteringby-Gently (kate), Monday, 14 November 2005 16:01 (twenty years ago)

Now I wish I hadn't said anything.

Now you know how the rest of us feel.

Jdubz (ex machina), Monday, 14 November 2005 16:04 (twenty years ago)

I shouldn't have asked. It would probably be inappropriate for me to sub for Boris in this situation, however it is a pity because I would clearly be happy to be connected in some way to such a great track.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 14 November 2005 16:07 (twenty years ago)

What this thread needs is more Boris:

Boris writes a book:

Boris does a moblog!!!

http://moblog.co.uk/blogs/473/moblog_d2940d7f7b271.jpg

OK, that's enough Boris for now. Soon people will start thinking the song is about Boris Johnson, which would be a fairly good alternative.

Lady Totteringby-Gently (kate), Monday, 14 November 2005 16:21 (twenty years ago)

Damn, so Borisonabike didn't work. Right then, here is Boris enjoying the latest Shimura Curves track instead:

Lady Totteringby-Gently (kate), Monday, 14 November 2005 16:22 (twenty years ago)

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 14 November 2005 16:25 (twenty years ago)

Whoops, in all that Borislove, I forgot to post the cover of the rekkid which is what I liked so much in the first place I was moved to post about it. Arrrrrrrrrr:

Lady Totteringby-Gently (kate), Monday, 14 November 2005 17:51 (twenty years ago)

I'm sure I will be outvoted and we'll end up with Alan Rickman in all our videos for some reason.

Yes, yes you will. (Or Alex from Blur? Come on, you'd like that too.)

Anna (Anna), Monday, 14 November 2005 18:16 (twenty years ago)

Ohmigod, Alex from Blur on Newsnight Review the other night. He has bannished the beard and the potatoishness and is as lovely lovely lovely a special shed correspondent as you might ever wish to see.

Lady Totteringby-Gently (kate), Monday, 14 November 2005 18:18 (twenty years ago)

oh i went to one of those brainlove records night, and bought this.. your track is ace.. as is most of the cd...

k8, the only middle-aged politico it is acceptable to lust over is alastair campbell!

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 13:16 (twenty years ago)

I didn't know he was a right wing politico when I started lusting after him! I just saw him presenting Have I Got News For You and started lusting after his rumpled lustiness.

Lady Totteringby-Gently (kate), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 13:21 (twenty years ago)

SORRY KATE

zz (ex machina), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 14:06 (twenty years ago)

two months pass...
OI!!!!

ANNA!!!!!!!

YOU LEFT YOUR PHONE AT MY HOUSE!!!!!

AND NOW I HAVE IT AND IT KEEPS RINGING AND I HAVE NO IDEA HOW TO ANSWER IT AND TELL YOUR FRIENDS THAT IT IS WITH ME AND NOT WITH YOU!!!

PLEASE GET IN TOUCH WHEN YOU READ THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Late Fear And The Potato Fear (kate), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 11:19 (twenty years ago)

It keeps ringing? Oh dear. I know I left it. I had no alarm last night and had to sleep in the living room and phone BT for an alarm call. Press the green button to answer it. If It's Tom from Darling say I have his email. Sorry unpaid secretary.

Anna (Anna), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 11:43 (twenty years ago)

There was a Tom who called on it, but I didn't know how to answer it when he rang. Sorry! Also, you have a text message, too.

I didn't realise you'd left it until after I'd already washed the dishes and gone to bed! I did run up to the bus stop and try to find you, but you'd already gone by then. :-(

The Late Fear And The Potato Fear (kate), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 11:45 (twenty years ago)

Ha ha, the irony being that I went to bed to read "Boris: The Book" and discovered your phone!

The Late Fear And The Potato Fear (kate), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 11:47 (twenty years ago)

ha. the text message is from me.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 13:00 (twenty years ago)

I still have the phone... :-)

Maybe I can start using it to ring my Boy Toy in Italy and drive Anna's phonebill through the roof. Heh heh. (j/k - I can't even figure out how to turn it off, let alone how to make a call.)

The Late Fear And The Potato Fear (kate), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 13:05 (twenty years ago)

Plus it's pay as you go, so without my bank account details it wouldn't work. Heh heh back atcha. And it doesn't dial international.

Lauren, email me.

Anna (Anna), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 13:38 (twenty years ago)

"without my bank account details it wouldn't work"

This is when you find out that you left your bank details on Kate's sofa, too.

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 13:44 (twenty years ago)

This is where I hack the databases and...

Damn, actually, I can only get mortgage info, not actual account info, and you've not got a mortgage. So much for my mad HaX0r skillz.

The Late Fear And The Potato Fear (kate), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 13:46 (twenty years ago)

And if you could see into my bannk accuont you'd know there was no hope of me ever getting a mortage either.

Anna (Anna), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 15:43 (twenty years ago)

...or a job as a sub, with that spelling, young lady!!! :-P

The Late Fear And The Potato Fear (kate), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 15:46 (twenty years ago)

aw i thought this was revived for another gig announcement

Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 16:10 (twenty years ago)

Oi, Anna! Your phone has now been passed to Emsk who possibly has already/will at some point deliver it to you by bicycle.

The Late Fear And The Potato Fear (kate), Thursday, 2 February 2006 10:56 (twenty years ago)

it has been delivered! to a work-frazzled ms anna last nite, by pigeon bike.

emsk ( emsk), Thursday, 2 February 2006 10:57 (twenty years ago)

Hurrah! Emsk's Pidgeon Bike Delivery Service saves the day again!

(I may need to make you watch that anime, too.)

The Late Fear And The Potato Fear (kate), Thursday, 2 February 2006 11:01 (twenty years ago)

Actually, it looks like there MIGHT be a Shimuras gig quite sooner than you think! As in, two weeks away! Stay tuned and keep your eyes peeled.

The Late Fear And The Potato Fear (kate), Thursday, 2 February 2006 13:35 (twenty years ago)

Oh my!

marianna lcl (marianna lcl), Thursday, 2 February 2006 13:37 (twenty years ago)

Check yr email, chick!

The Late Fear And The Potato Fear (kate), Thursday, 2 February 2006 13:45 (twenty years ago)

I opened the door to Emsk with mad hair and smudged eyeliner, unable to think about anything except my dying apple mac and Forward Russia.

Anna (Anna), Thursday, 2 February 2006 13:57 (twenty years ago)

you should totally play the next how does it feel to be loved bands night thingy!

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 2 February 2006 13:59 (twenty years ago)

Paging Phillip Sissons - can we have a show on E! please? We have action and drama and pretty dresses and no boys with guitars.

marianna lcl (marianna lcl), Thursday, 2 February 2006 14:00 (twenty years ago)

yep i have emailed hdif this very morning. also a show on e sounds like a very bad idea! everything will sound great to you but won't make any sense to anyone else. um.

emsk ( emsk), Thursday, 2 February 2006 14:02 (twenty years ago)

Unfortunately, we were asked to play the next HDIF band night but we couldn't do it. I;m sure we will do one in the future, though.

However, this EXCITING SOON TO BE ANNOUNCED SHOW is on V-Day. Chuck, do you fancy DJ-ing?

The Late Fear And The Potato Fear (kate), Thursday, 2 February 2006 14:02 (twenty years ago)

Also... WHAT?!?!? I do not like e, it is not good for my brane.

Unless you are talking about that Television network. I would like to be on the Television! In pretty dresses, with pretty guitars.

The Late Fear And The Potato Fear (kate), Thursday, 2 February 2006 14:03 (twenty years ago)

Television are pretty old by now, though.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 2 February 2006 14:05 (twenty years ago)

The Lex with a guitar? Doesn't that mean the world's about to implode?

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 8 July 2009 17:19 (sixteen years ago)

I really wish that pic had become more of a meme...

Violent In Design (Masonic Boom), Wednesday, 8 July 2009 17:20 (sixteen years ago)

Can you order it online?

the meme?

Ømår Littel (Jordan), Wednesday, 8 July 2009 17:25 (sixteen years ago)

All in good time.

My sys admin has just recovered the masters from my dead laptop, so I've got to ... be persuaded that it does not actually need one more mix (step away from the controls, Shieldsy) and then master it...

Gonna figure out all the downloading bobbins and that kind of thing - well, at least, Anna will, when she gets over the swine flu. (no DJ on DJ sponge bath jokes please)

Violent In Design (Masonic Boom), Wednesday, 8 July 2009 17:26 (sixteen years ago)

I remember the gig from this thread, was a good night.

Jarlrmai, Wednesday, 8 July 2009 17:42 (sixteen years ago)

me too, the one in liverpool?

i thought the curves were no more? glad i'm wrong.

Great Scott! It's Molecular Man. (Ste), Wednesday, 8 July 2009 19:16 (sixteen years ago)

My ordering finger is itching!

StanM, Wednesday, 8 July 2009 19:19 (sixteen years ago)

the only thing that could make the lex picture better is if he was holding an SRV edition stratocaster

bodyguard/publicist Tank (M@tt He1ges0n), Wednesday, 8 July 2009 19:35 (sixteen years ago)

he hates indie far more than blues, though, surely

nabisco, Wednesday, 8 July 2009 19:39 (sixteen years ago)

All five Shimura Curves (who are still in the country, so obviously Ed was not there) were in a room on Monday, and no one killed anyone else (though Anna did wave the pizza cutting knife in my direction before AMP wrestled it away from her) and uh...

Well, we've all been DJing with one another quite a lot lately so, uh, when the good folks at Echo Range (to keep this all in the ILX family!) suggested putting out the Great Lost Album - plus bonus tracks of ALL THE SINGLES (and songs on various compilations) well, it seemed only good and natural.

Problem was, the masters were locked away on a laptop that died a year and a half ago. Today we got them off the dead hard drive. So we have album!

Violent In Design (Masonic Boom), Wednesday, 8 July 2009 19:58 (sixteen years ago)

Hurrah! I had a great time at the Notting Hill Arts Club gig (and the meetup beforehand!). Looking forward to getting hold of a copy of the album at long last :).

Stevie T, Thursday, 9 July 2009 09:47 (sixteen years ago)

It's all about the hand-in-motion blur.

Matt DC, Thursday, 9 July 2009 10:04 (sixteen years ago)

What the hell is that weird ass guitar? Looks like the Baseball Bat Guitar I had as a teenager. (which turned out to be some kind of Teisco or something)

Tracklist... erm... we're still in the process of deciding that.

The album "The Universe From First Principles" is:
OPC
The Boy Hairdresser
Just Like Friends
Poison Tree
Brown and Sticky
Thoughtworm
I'm Not Afraid
A Straight Line
My Angel
NEUfriend (Collectively German mix)
Hung With Joy

What was on the Play Truck ep? (not in order, from memory, could be forgetting stuff)

Lost Rivers of Clerkenwell
Magnus
Elephants (?)
Mother
Stronger

I Capture The Castle (?)

Bonus tracks:

PWND
(Just Keep My Name) Out Of Your Blog

Do remind me if I've forgotten any tracks because my memory is not what it used to be.

I really want to get some good remixes, but the others were so far down on the pink wine by the point I brought that up that they just started teasing me about massive hairy Turks and I went off in a huff. Ha ha. Nothing ever changes.

Violent In Design (Masonic Boom), Thursday, 9 July 2009 10:07 (sixteen years ago)

Excellent!

DELUXE EDITION HANDTOOLED BOX W/ LP, DVD and CARROTCAKE!! (a-la JLennon's Wedding Album, i.e. a photostat of carrotcake)

Mark G, Thursday, 9 July 2009 10:47 (sixteen years ago)

bonus! i still have PWND on my walkman.

Great Scott! It's Molecular Man. (Ste), Thursday, 9 July 2009 10:48 (sixteen years ago)

Haha I don't actually know half the tracks on the album itself. I wouldn't mind a copy of the EP tracks if they aren't going to come out commercially, as I think a few of them have gone missing over the years.

Matt DC, Thursday, 9 July 2009 10:54 (sixteen years ago)

four months pass...

Yes, yes, yes. This is taking much longer than expected.

We wanted to have it out this year, but first we got waylaid by another pregnancy, and then we realised that not-a-one of us has any clue how to *master* a bloody album, and, erm... honestly, I *WILL* have this out by my next birthday if it kills me, BUT.

In the meantime, I've decided to blog all of the bits and bobs that didn't make it onto the album:

http://shimuracurves.blogspot.com/

I'll try to get the best quality MP3 that I can up there - or aiff of songs I still have the masters of.

Week 1 is obvious, it's ELEPHANTS - which started life as an EBA song. And prompted a glimpse back into ancient eras of ILX past. Some names have been changed to protect the innocent.
