Maybe I will! I can go pick up from Picante. I'm thinking...SUPER NACHOS. And I've still got some Coronas in the fridge.

tomorrow. have been looking forward to it all week.

Maria (Maria), Friday, 27 May 2005 18:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Man, I am always disappointed when some restaurant in NYC is touted as having real Mexican. Has there been a thread about that or does Jody remember any good places that are up to her now-raised standard?

Ken L (Ken L), Friday, 27 May 2005 18:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw nearly 7 or 8 Mexican places in Park Slope when i was in NY at the beginning of the month. Are none of those places any good? They looked OK to me (as I walked by).

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 27 May 2005 18:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmm, maybe I'll thaw out some sauce and get my enchilada on tomorrow.

I was just chatting with a friend from high school online and she mentioned she might move to Mexico next year. All I could think of was godDAMN do I ever want some mexican food and margaritas.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 27 May 2005 18:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I had some last night. ... But I am going to a bar after work that's run by a Mexican woman, and she's been known lay out some snacks, so ... maybe?

I never had good (by my standards) Mexican in NYC.

Listen to the Texan. She knows what she's talking about.

Calvin Trillin says the same thing, actually. New York, restaurant capital of the world, any kind of food you can imagine, but not a single decent Mexican restaurant.

slightly more subdued (kenan), Friday, 27 May 2005 18:32 (twenty-one years ago)

NOT TRUE NOT TRUE NOT TRUE -- did you read the article i posted?

There are a third of a million Mexicans in NYC now and many of them have restaurants. The Mexican food you can get here now is much more varied than it was 10 years ago. And Calvin Trillin is not a food writer.

a collectivist romantic fling! (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 27 May 2005 18:35 (twenty-one years ago)

If I dug harder I'm sure I could've found something passable but overall us Texans are hard to please.

Miss Misery (thatgirl), Friday, 27 May 2005 18:35 (twenty-one years ago)

well where did you go?

a collectivist romantic fling! (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 27 May 2005 18:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I always bought into that Trillin thing too but Iimagine there's some OK stuff out there now. I wonder where all the Mexicans are from, though?

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 27 May 2005 18:37 (twenty-one years ago)

And Calvin Trillin is not a food writer.

?

Everything I've read by him has been about food.

I mean, I know he writes about other things, too...

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 27 May 2005 18:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Also Sam, there's a ton of great food in NY that you can't get in Texas so why bother trying to something you can get at home any old time.

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 27 May 2005 18:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I am eating "Mexican" food right now!

Early to mid 90's, I think, Jody.

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 27 May 2005 18:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I wonder where all the Mexicans are from, though?

Oddly enough, I was just reading an article about Mexican/US immigration focusing on NYC -- apparently a good chunk of NYC-located Mexican-born folks are from the state of Puebla, east of Mexico City. I don't know if they're the overwhelming majority, though.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 27 May 2005 18:40 (twenty-one years ago)

overall us Texans are hard to please

You really can't get Mexican food like you can in Texas. Not even in Mexico. It's a singular, awe-inspiring cuisine.

There's pretty good Mexican food in Chicago, as long as you stay out of any place where they speak any English at all.

slightly more subdued (kenan), Friday, 27 May 2005 18:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know too much about Puebla or its cuisine.

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 27 May 2005 18:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 27 May 2005 18:42 (twenty-one years ago)

mmmm poblanos are a staple of the food around here (tucson).

a collectivist romantic fling! (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 27 May 2005 18:43 (twenty-one years ago)

A random page I've found. There are doubtless others.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 27 May 2005 18:43 (twenty-one years ago)

There are a third of a million Mexicans in NYC now and many of them have restaurants.

So what? Can all Mexicans automatically cook? I'll tell you, because I found out the hard way -- they can't.

slightly more subdued (kenan), Friday, 27 May 2005 18:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I think as the other threads allude Mex food depends largely on where people immigrate from. Cities in TX can vary widely in this. Overall I love TX too much to stay gone anywhere for too long. Nothing ever measures up.

Miss Misery (thatgirl), Friday, 27 May 2005 18:44 (twenty-one years ago)

by that logic, who says mexicans in texas can cook? (xpost)

a collectivist romantic fling! (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 27 May 2005 18:45 (twenty-one years ago)

California has many Oaxacans and Michoacans. I was in Nayarit and asked some people why Nayarit folks never emigrate to the US and I heard again and again: "No,I like it here." I had to agree.

andy --, Friday, 27 May 2005 18:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmmm. I've definitely had Mole Poblano before.

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 27 May 2005 18:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I am burnt out on sushi and mexican food! I never thought I'd get there!

These days I like a really well made salad, with not too much of any one ingredient.

And crabcakes.

the black hand, Friday, 27 May 2005 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Link! You guys giving me links! I want first-hand reports- preferably from people who use to live in those parts of the States that used to be part of Mexico. Paul, Columbia is kind of far for me these days, but do you know the name of the places(s) you've gone to?

Ken L (Ken L), Friday, 27 May 2005 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe JBR since there are many more Mexicans living here more of them will be able to cook? i dunno.

Miss Misery (thatgirl), Friday, 27 May 2005 18:51 (twenty-one years ago)

NYC: the tortilla factory on Starr St just off the Jefferson stop on the L train. 3 tacos 3 dollars. No english spoken. Hard to beat.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 27 May 2005 18:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Taco Taco on the Upper East Side (2nd/89-90) has much better Mexican food than one would expect.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 27 May 2005 18:56 (twenty-one years ago)

There's pretty good Mexican food in Chicago, as long as you stay out of any place where they speak any English at all.

This is uncharitable and smacks of the kind of food rockism Nick was talking about on that other thread. I think "we" sometimes like to imagine that Mexican food made by Mexicans and served to Mexicans is the "real thing," and that the minute a non-Spanish speaker sets foot in the place, they give us what they think we want, which is invariably blander and less authentic. I'm not saying this happens sometimes, but I think it probably happens less than it used to, and resides only as this fetishistic fantasy. There are plenty of good Mexican restaurants in Chicago where the staff speaks English, for the practical reason that they depend on gringos (still >70% of the city's population) to stay afloat.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 27 May 2005 19:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I really like that Cafe Tapatio (sp?) place on Ashland. I have no idea if it's authentic. Probably not, since they have vegetarian items. But it's fucking good. I'm hungry.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 27 May 2005 19:03 (twenty-one years ago)

andy --, Friday, 27 May 2005 19:07 (twenty-one years ago)

The most disappointing "Mexican food" experience of my entire life was this time in Prague (of all places) when my friend and I were wandering around and saw a guy in a sombrero with a big sign with "MARGARITAS" and an arrow on it. We both immediately got the craving, and, without stopping to ponder the potential availability of good Mexican food in the Czech Republic, followed the arrow, only to find that it led to TGI Friday's (of all places) and, defeated, we went in and just ate chips and salsa and spent like $130 on fruity drinks.
Here is a question, though. Why are the burritos in California so good? I had some in San Francisco last summer that were probably the best thing I've ever eaten in my life, and they had all the same ingredients you can get in a burrito anywhere. I'm comparing the SF burritos I had to the ones I get in local Mexican places that are owned by Mexican families and have [what I consider to be] good, reasonably authentic food. So why were the ones I had in SF so vastly superior? Was it just the added, sweet taste of being on vacation?

kirsten (kirsten), Friday, 27 May 2005 19:08 (twenty-one years ago)

San Francisco is pretty famous for the burritos. LA folks squabble, but they know who wins.

andy --, Friday, 27 May 2005 19:09 (twenty-one years ago)

But what makes them so good? It didn't seem like any of the ingredients were different than the ingredients I put in burritos at home!

kirsten (kirsten), Friday, 27 May 2005 19:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh god we had the most disgusting mexican food ever in Paris (I KNOW). I think I had some kind of fajitas with...EGGPLANT in them. Le gross.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 27 May 2005 19:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I've said it before, to Adamrl's chagrin, but I wasn't terribly impressed with SF burritos. I mean, they were good, yeah! But they weren't amazing.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 27 May 2005 19:10 (twenty-one years ago)

My mom LOVES eggplant.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 27 May 2005 19:10 (twenty-one years ago)

There's a tie for worst mexican food in my life: the stuff I got at this one place in Paris (I guess it wasn't mexican then, but spanish?) and some I had at a place in Chicago called Arturr0's. Both make me sick just thinking about them! ICK! (ha, x-posts)

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 27 May 2005 19:11 (twenty-one years ago)

the black hand, Friday, 27 May 2005 19:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Guys, look, rule of thumb -- Mexican food away from the Western Hemisphere = just, no. Don't do it. Don't disappoint yourself.

SF burritos are indeed very good.

I ate at a place in London once called the Texan Cantina and it tasted like they put chili powder in their salsa. But they were playing Willie, had icy margaritas and we were very homesick so all was forgiven.

My (relatively) new favorite Mexican place is La Fiesta Mexicana, right next to the Biograph Theater on Lincoln Ave. Not because the food is great (although it is pretty good), but because they stay open until 1 am on weeknights and have karaoke on Tuesdays. It's a good place to go after band practice for chips and margaritas.

I can't stop eating at Mama's Tamales in MacArthur Park in L.A. Possibly my fave place in L.A. at the moment.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Friday, 27 May 2005 19:44 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, I did have a tostada for lunch after all, but w/o cheese or sour cream and with extra jalapenos to try to clear my head.

I had truly mediocre Mexican food in Paris but the worst (the sorrows of being an expatriate Californian) was in Tokyo. It's just not worth it, eating Mexican abroad (nb. Mexico excepted) unless you get nachos and drink a river of tequila. This can also lead to teary homesickness, but in France, Maroccan or Lebanese food along with good wine usually cures it quickly enough.

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 27 May 2005 19:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks for the recommendations. I've still yet to find the ideal NYC Mexican joint, though the Zaragoza grocery on Ave. A makes much better tacos than you'd expect, especially the pork. Anyone know a good place to get fish tacos in NYC?

Holy crap. I had fajitas for lunch without even knowing about this thread's existence!!! I kid you not; I got out of work and hightailed it to a family function at this Mexican restaurant. Fajitas and guacamole were had. And rice & beans that I doctored up with salsa. I'm still a bit on the full side, many hours after having lunch.

But then again, I'm like Miss Misery/Sam in that Mexican food is the everyday for me.

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 27 May 2005 22:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Also:

Nothing beats homemade tamales. Even the best tamale vendor won't have tamales as sabroso as the ones you almost have to slave over.

Cilantro is, as they say around here, U&K.

It's a good rule of thumb that the best Mexican restaurants will almost invariably be rundown-looking places that look as though they're about ready to crumble into nonexistence. The big, fancy, themed places almost always have the crappiest Mexican food.

Homemade tortillas -- the only way to go. If you look at an establishment that *doesn't* advertise homemade corn & flour tortillas, they aren't worth walking into. They *have* to have homemade tortillas; you can tell by how pillowy soft the flour tortillas are and by how thick and hearty the corn tortillas are.

Menudo -- again, best done at home, but if you do get it at a restaurant, it'd probably be best to squeeze that lemon juice into the soup before sampling it.

The good enchiladas will always be topped by a simple red enchilada sauce, not by chili, though if the restaurant's got good food overall and the chili's not overpowering, the enchiladas can be more than servicable.

Borracho beans have to be spicy.

And the guacamole has to be freshly made as well. It can't be a pureed travesty of a side dish. It has to be thick and lumpy and it has to look as though it's made up of mashed avocado, not as though it were some sort of disgusting avocado soup. Oh, and guacamole's not supposed to be spicy!!! It's supposed to be a cool and creamy side. This business of adding diced jalapeños into guacamole is madness. If you want crunchiness in guacamole, add onions! Onions are okay. Diced tomatoes -- totally okay. Anything spicy? Save it for the pico de gallo!

i didn't eat mexican food today. i had an "oriental chicken salad" (very nice green leafy lettuce, grilled chix, slivered almonds, mandarin orange pieces, sesame seeds, and sesame dressing) from bruegger's bagels, and it was actually quite good! i'm hankering for dinner now, but there's a thunderstorm outside. is this the thread where i order delivery from the pizza place?

a collectivist romantic fling! (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 28 May 2005 01:01 (twenty-one years ago)

thread hijack time. do i order: (a) chicken parmigiana sub* (b) 10" cheese pizza (b) 12" cheese pizza?

*i have to get used to saying "sub"; where i'm from it'll always be "hero"

a collectivist romantic fling! (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 28 May 2005 01:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I say (a). I had Mexican food of a sort tonight (I find it difficult to believe that chimichangas are real Mexican food even if they're tasty), and four pints of beer. I felt kinda sick after but I'm better now. Dee OTM re guacamole...I fucking hate it when guacamole is like baby food, and even though he didn't post about it on this thread Spencer Chow's OTM about regular hard tacos with seasoned beef, cheese, tomatoes and iceberg lettuce being good for you. I have to say that post was funny enough to where I had tears streaming down my face but it was true nonetheless.

Bryan (Bryan), Saturday, 28 May 2005 02:06 (twenty-one years ago)

i got (c) with pepperoni, so i could make the minimum.

Strange...I had a yearning for Mexican earlier today, when I went out. But that'll have to wait until at least later this week, because I instead went to the store and got a pork roast.

P.S.: Does anyone have a recipe for posole? I had it ONCE nearly ten years ago, and it was so good I haven't forgotten it since then.

Anna Nicole Smite (j.lu), Monday, 5 October 2009 02:55 (sixteen years ago)

i don't have a a recipe but it is purchased every time i see it written on the specials' board.

I'm probably going to eat tacos tonight.

jaymc, Friday, 3 May 2013 17:04 (thirteen years ago)

I am in Mexico, thus Mexican food is likely today, tomorrow, and the next day.

Actually I might make ropa vieja tonight, which I guess is more Cuban than anything. But it shall be served with tortillas, no doubt.

quincie, Friday, 3 May 2013 21:41 (thirteen years ago)

i had a taco plate for lunch :D :D :D

There's a great old American-style Mexican restaurant a couple blocks away from here. Haven't decided on lunch yet and I'm holding this thread completely responsible.
