GET. THE. FUCK. IN!
rock, and indeed roll.
― grimly fiendish, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 17:41 (eighteen years ago)
er... I only have the "forwarding and POP" and not the "POP/IMAP" they're talking about there. :-/
― StanM, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 18:10 (eighteen years ago)
they're rolling it out to everyone over the course of the next few days. if you don't have it yet, keep checking back periodically.

I always log in to check my mail and then log out again. So I did, but I don't know if it's necessary.
― StanM, Friday, 26 October 2007 12:39 (eighteen years ago)
It doesn't work though. I enabled everything, configured my email client, sent my gmail account a mail, and I don't get it in my mailbox. I can only see it when I log in online.

What's the difference between just forwarding and IMAP? Does it stay in your Gmail account when you install it in your reg email program?
― stevienixed, Tuesday, 30 October 2007 13:04 (eighteen years ago)
basically, yes ... this might explain it better.
― grimly fiendish, Tuesday, 30 October 2007 13:15 (eighteen years ago)
Yeah, they're properly linked, dynamically.
― Alba, Tuesday, 30 October 2007 13:20 (eighteen years ago)
I've been paying a small annual subscription to fastmail.fm for a while, because they offered IMAP. Now that gmail has it, the only real reasons not to migrate are that I don't want to change my primary email address and I don't really like Google being in charge of all my online affairs.
― Alba, Tuesday, 30 October 2007 13:24 (eighteen years ago)

this IMAP thing is a double-edged sword. good things: can use mail.app again. w00t. bad things: the way i used labels and stars doesn't translate at all :(
still. i *think* i like it.
― grimly fiendish, Saturday, 3 November 2007 15:46 (eighteen years ago)
correction. stars do work. i wasn't trying hard enough.
still miss my labels, though. folders aren't the same. nothing gmail can do about that, mind: it's up to apple to rework mail around it :)
― grimly fiendish, Saturday, 3 November 2007 15:59 (eighteen years ago)
mail.app on computer running IMAP = a bit of dog, esp when it sends a number of different DRAFTS to people at various stages of incompletion
mail.app on iphone running IMAP = expect teething problems
― czn, Sunday, 4 November 2007 00:37 (eighteen years ago)
That drafts thing is ridiculous. I don't think they send, but they show up in the inbox on my side.
― stet, Sunday, 4 November 2007 01:15 (eighteen years ago)
yeh, it doesn't actually *send* the drafts -- but it does make a total fuck of the conversation in web-gmail.
turning off "save drafts on server" fixes it. not ideal, but hey.
― grimly fiendish, Sunday, 4 November 2007 11:00 (eighteen years ago)
What's this CAPTCHA thing all about? It keeps preventing outlook from connecting to my imap account, I have to go and "unlock" it (whatever that means) before outlook can get in. Pretty annoying.
― JimD, Sunday, 4 November 2007 16:30 (eighteen years ago)
gphone announced sorta
http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20071105-its-official-google-announces-open-source-mobile-phone-os-android.html
― czn, Monday, 5 November 2007 17:11 (eighteen years ago)
what's the difference between IMAP and just leaving messages on the server with POP3?
― Tracer Hand, Monday, 5 November 2007 17:17 (eighteen years ago)
IMAP properly syncs them. If you read something on the web, it gets marked read in your inbox. If you archive something in the client, it gets archived on the web.

yeah so if one of your contacts in gchat sends you a tinyurl.com link and says something like "omg lol check out this video" don't click on it because it phishes your contacts away and then sends that same im to everyone you know, resulting in 100 emails asking you what that awesome video was, sux but it won't load omg

oh well do you want to find out your facebook space robot name instead?
What is your robot name? How do you say hello in your robot language? Find out, now! After you post your results, tag others so they can play space robots, too.
What is your robot name?(SSN + “tron”)
What is the name of your home planet?(Your full name as it appears on your credit card + “ia”)
How many light years did you travel to get to earth?(Checking account number (https://webapps.paydq.com/cableone/images/aba_example.gif) + “light years”)
What is the name of your spaceship?(Bank name + “3000”)
You do you say “hello” in your robot language?(Credit card number + “bloop-bleep”)
What is the name of your R2 unit buddy?(R2 + CSC (the 3-4 digit code on the back of your credit card))

Google and all its various Web services went down for about 14% of its users today because of "an error in one of our systems caused us to direct some of our web traffic through Asia," the company explained in a blog post.
Imagine if you were trying to fly from New York to San Francisco, but your plane was routed through an airport in Asia. And a bunch of other planes were sent that way too, so your flight was backed up and your journey took much longer than expected. That's basically what happened to some of our users today for about an hour, starting at 7:48 am Pacific time.
Earlier, ZDNet blamed the outage on AT&T, suggesting that "anything that touches AT&T is down." AT&T took to Twitter to deny the charge:

My only problem with gmail is that it seems like the scripts stop working in firefox 3.0.... I tend to leave gmail open on a tab all the time, if my computer goes to sleep and I come back to it later, hitting inbox brings up some cached version of the page that shows no new messages, and it won't retrive any either until I refresh the entire page. minor annoyance

Today's Gmail problemsTuesday, September 01, 2009 1:15 PMPosted by David Besbris, Engineering Director
We know many of you are having trouble accessing Gmail right now — we are too, and we definitely feel your pain. We don't usually post about minor issues here (the Apps status dashboard and the Gmail Help Center are usually where this kind of information goes). Because this is impacting so many of you, we wanted to let you know we're currently looking into the issue and hope to have more info to share here shortly. If you have IMAP or POP set up already, you should be able to access your mail that way in the meantime. We're terribly sorry for the inconvenience and will get Gmail back up and running as soon as possible.

my gmail keeps showing that I have 1 unread email in my inbox but it doesn't show up. I run Gmail notifier on my personal computer and it shows the subject line and first few words of the email in question (for some reason this email is stuck in limbo) but I cannot load it. It's been like this for days...
― musically, Friday, 7 May 2010 18:56 (sixteen years ago)
do you use google gears? (maybe that's what gmail notifier is part of? i have no idea obv)

― rahni, Friday, 7 May 2010 19:15 (sixteen years ago)
never used google gears before. gmail notifier is just a google app i run so that i see a notification on my taskbar when i have a new message. i haven't had an issue with marking things read/unread, this particular email is just not visible in my inbox. very annoying.

Had recent long-ass discussion with friend; wanting to review; clicking "Expand all".
Expands abt 60%. Rest is apparently "Loading..." according to teaser tabcaption. Just me?
― anatol_merklich, Thursday, 24 June 2010 21:30 (fifteen years ago)
Not sure about exactly that, but over the last couple of weeks when I click between 'Inbox' and any other folder it gives me the "loading..." or "still working..." for 10+ minutes sometimes. I end up having to just close the tab and go back in.

A gmail question:After wading through all my unopened e-mails I found I still had three unread messages left. I can't see them, presumably because they are messages which I ignored / forgot about several months or possibly years ago. I don't want to work my way through page after page after page of e-mails trying to find them (I've got over 7,000 e-mails there), but I can't seem to find any way of sorting my e-mails so that all unread ones go to the top of the pile. Is there a way of doing this?

idgi with the importance tags. Whats the diff between that and the star function - or filters for that matter? Why does gmail think I need half a dozen different ways to mark an email?
― The man who mistook his life for a FAP (Trayce), Sunday, 22 May 2011 22:29 (fifteen years ago)
importance is automatic, and it's supposed to learn like spam filtering. it's supposed to identify "real" email, i.e. stuff addressed just to you, or stuff you've replied to in the past.
― caek, Sunday, 22 May 2011 22:30 (fifteen years ago)
Automatically determining importanceTo predict which of your incoming messages are important, Gmail automatically takes into account a number of signals, including:Who you email (For example, if you email Bob a lot, it’s likely that messages from Bob are important.)Which messages you open (Messages you open are likely more important than those you skip over.)What keywords spark your interest (If you always read messages about soccer, a new message that contains those same soccer words is more likely to be important.)Which messages you reply to (If you always reply to messages from your mom, messages she sends you are likely to be important.)Your recent use of stars, archive and delete (Messages you star are probably more important than messages you archive without opening.)

But see I already know what messages I need to see - thats what I use the label/archive system for. And it makes more sense, as the labels have names. A bunch of emails with arrows beside them tells me bugger all!

Anyone else having problems with spam being sent from their accounts tonight? A friend and I both had messages sent to our contacts tonight,
I'm usually pretty good at keeping my password secret and not logging into random sites. Seems to be a bit of a weird coincidence that both ours were hacked into tonight.
― jellybean (back again) (Jill), Wednesday, 25 May 2011 19:40 (fifteen years ago)
they almost certainly weren't hacked. you can spoof the outgoing address on email just as easily as writing the from: address on an envelope. it's one way spammers get through spam filters, as it makes emails look like they come from real people.
― caek, Wednesday, 25 May 2011 19:44 (fifteen years ago)
They had access to my address book, so people in my contact list were sent the email. So I guess this was more than just spoofing.

― ban drake (the rapper) (max), Wednesday, 25 May 2011 19:57 (fifteen years ago)
was your password really easy to guess? like a permutation of your name? i think thats how they got into my girlfriends mail account. she was applying to jobs at the time and all the people she'd sent her resume to got a bunch of spam.
everyone should set up 2-step verification through the account settings control panel. it takes 5 minutes! do it!
― ban drake (the rapper) (max), Wednesday, 25 May 2011 19:58 (fifteen years ago)
yeah if it went to your gmail address book then maybe you were hacked. drag! make sure you change your password to something crazy strong (mixed case, numbers, punctutation, etc.)
there are other possibilities: like someone else's address book with you in was hacked, or your windows pc rather than your email account was hacked.
― caek, Wednesday, 25 May 2011 20:00 (fifteen years ago)

So...I was able to use my gmail account just fine last night, but when I got up this morning it mysteriously claimed that my password was incorrect, which is impossible as a)I know exactly what it is, b)I've never told it to anyone, c)I haven't changed it for a few years, d)I turned the computer off before I went to bed so even if a burglar had sneaked into our flat in the night without stealing anything and leaving no trace of his intrusion, he couldn't have changed my password.
I was able to get a new password by getting a link sent to another of my e-mail addresses and now I can log on again fine. Nothing appears to have been sent. No unopened messages have been opened. If somebody had somehow got hold of my password, there seems to reason why they would change it as this would immediately alert me to the fact that someone had access to my account (and also would lead me to immediately change the password so that they couldn't get back in again). So what on earth happened?

If you want to check if there's been any unusual activity on your account, go all the way dowwn on the inbox page (probably on any page) and you should have text that says : Last account activity: 55 minutes ago. Clicking on Details just below it shows you who was connected to your account. MAybe you'll see something to help you there.

the "you can reference your emails while you type" idea is vaguely useful, but since the popup compose window only happens for new emails it's kind of pointless? i still have to open a new tab to reference old emails all the time, because most of the time i'm writing replies, not starting new emails.

Because of certain technical specifications, Gmail messages sent in plain-text mode automatically force a line break after about 78 characters. This happens after you press Send.
WHAT THE FUCK. WHY.

it's kind of a miserable situation. i'm not sure about gmail though.
― caek, Wednesday, 22 May 2013 17:59 (thirteen years ago)
the thing is, gmail used to not do it, and i've been plain text on that for years now.

i'm having a really annoying problem with gmail on firefox. the problem is with a long thread of email exchanges developing this hideous tail that completely screws up the formatting (everything becomes so wide it doesn't fit on the screen). it used to hide the previous emails and you could see them by clicking the 'show trimmed content' button but now when i reply it creates emails that look like this:
http://i43.tinypic.com/2w6tkly.jpg
it makes the email thread impossible to read on a phone. if i reply to the same email in chrome everything is fine. other friends are having exactly the same problem so it's not just my browser.
i've tried to search for other people having the same problem but i can't find anything. maybe i am not describing it using the correct terms. can anyone help here?

― caek, Thursday, 23 May 2013 15:44 (thirteen years ago)
ffaq doesn't explain the hard line breaks? Also f=f looks cool, objections all lame. I used to be hardcore anal plaintext and no top posting fascist but have fucked that shit since gmail.

It's not down, exactly..
It seems to have put the oldest message right at the top, with all the others in the correct order going down.
So, on top of the usual "Would you like to work in Macclesfield?" type agency bobbins, is me and a friend yelling random phrases from Stump's "Buffalo" at each other!
HOW MUCH IS THE FISH!
SWING A LINGAHHHH
and so on.
Any ideas? This happened to youse?

No. It was marked with "Pals", but I took it off.
― Mark G, Tuesday, 24 February 2015 14:09 (eleven years ago)
I took off "Inbox", it's gone but if I search I can get it back.
Strange.
