Yes, the sequel, as it were. So anyway Glasgow is the next stop on my visionquest thing or whatever this is. I appear to be crashing with RJG and Ally C if they'll still put up with me, even though I am the evil anti-Sinisterite. Grimly Fiendish was just worrying about no Glasgow talk on the London thread so this should assuage his fears. He spoke of pubs.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 9 June 2005 14:28 (twenty years ago)

But what about hangin' with Calum? I know he's not in Glasgow, but he sounds keen to see you.

Leon C. (Ex Leon), Thursday, 9 June 2005 14:42 (twenty years ago)

Well, you know.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 9 June 2005 14:42 (twenty years ago)

Hi Ned! Ally C and RJG may be moving house then, but neither is in Scotland at the moment to confirm. Don't worry, you can always kip in the Hielan' Brolly.

Mädchen (Madchen), Thursday, 9 June 2005 14:45 (twenty years ago)

Moving house, yipes! I don't blame them for having other things on their mind.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 9 June 2005 14:47 (twenty years ago)

pubs, hurrah. i'm up for anything at all: and it'd be good to meet some other folk, seeing as i only actually know one other glasgow ilx0r.

irritatingly, monday and tuesday are my busiest days work-wise (ie i toil late into the evening). but i can just zoom out and meet people at a place of their choosing.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 9 June 2005 15:07 (twenty years ago)

Booze on a school night = bad idea, as shown by my Scotland-watching hangover this morning. But, for you, I guess, I could force myself to manage it.

grimly should advise all of the best pub near his work and we could go there.

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 9 June 2005 15:50 (twenty years ago)

if you're serious: the station bar in cowcaddens kicks so much ass it hurts. but it is also old-man-tastic.

it has neil diamond and meat loaf on the jukebox. i think this is a good thing but others might disagree.

i thought ned might like mono? (by which i mean: i really like mono.)

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 9 June 2005 16:02 (twenty years ago)

You gonna kiss me or something?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 9 June 2005 16:02 (twenty years ago)

Well, Glasgow is notoriously bad at organising drinking, so I figured if something was convenient for people who would otherwise be inconvenienced, then that would be a good starting point.

Old-man-tastic pubs with Meatloaf and Neil Diamond on the jukebox are the BEST. (but Mono would be OK too, I guess).

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 9 June 2005 16:08 (twenty years ago)

I'm up for it, although believe it or not in Hungary I think 'til the 11th. Be nice to see you lot out for a drink. Mono's cool for me. Cowcaddens is cavalcade-tastic for me too.

KeefW (kmw), Thursday, 9 June 2005 18:19 (twenty years ago)

is it here where i can request a photo of dastoor giving ned a noogie?

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Thursday, 9 June 2005 18:21 (twenty years ago)

! Abuse! Mockery!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 9 June 2005 18:22 (twenty years ago)

Ned, my girlfriend and some of my best buds in Glasgow. Can we please meet up with you and all take turns at laughing at you?

I need to cc this thread.

Music Mick, Thursday, 9 June 2005 19:08 (twenty years ago)

Only joking Ned. I'm sure we'd all have fun with you in tow.

Music Mick, Thursday, 9 June 2005 19:09 (twenty years ago)

[sigh]

er, anyway. i'm easy. mono might be a slightly better bet: easier to get a seat, less chance of hassle from old men. but ho, there's plenty of time to sort this out.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 9 June 2005 19:52 (twenty years ago)

There is indeed! Plot away.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 9 June 2005 19:53 (twenty years ago)

haha "easier to get a seat".

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 9 June 2005 20:38 (twenty years ago)

It's a MONDAY (or Tuesday)! Do people go out on a Monday (or Tuesday)? (I do, but in Paisley which has millions of pubs and no people drinking in most of them)

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 9 June 2005 20:43 (twenty years ago)

I might, because I'm on holiday that week.

KeefW (kmw), Thursday, 9 June 2005 20:50 (twenty years ago)

Come to think of it, I might see if I can hassle Doctor Tim Hopkins into visiting that week. He's been threatening of late....

KeefW (kmw), Thursday, 9 June 2005 20:55 (twenty years ago)

haha "easier to get a seat".

[ponders myriad potential meanings, decides on one]

i have, on occasion or two, seen it absolutely packed in mono. there wasn't room to swing a vegan sausage.

[wonders if was missing something; goes to read big brother thread anyway]

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 9 June 2005 21:00 (twenty years ago)

sorry I was being a fanny again, I have seen it packed too. I just don't like it.

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 9 June 2005 21:03 (twenty years ago)

Why not? (Not that I'm a particular fan, but I'm not all that fussy)

KeefW (kmw), Thursday, 9 June 2005 21:05 (twenty years ago)

I like the sound of the place with Meatloaf on the jukebox. Keith, they probably have My Sharona as well.

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 9 June 2005 21:07 (twenty years ago)

! I'm all for that!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 9 June 2005 21:08 (twenty years ago)

Ailsa, any of that's cool by me. Meatloaf... The Knack... Two out of three ain't bad.

KeefW (kmw), Thursday, 9 June 2005 21:10 (twenty years ago)

actually, this thread could be astonishingly helpful given that i can never, ever think of decent pubs when i need to.

pubs in glasgow wot i like

• mono (scratty vegan lunacy, but good beer, decent music and is part of old 13th-note continuum. plus has record shop attached)

• sleazy's (for sheer obstinacy and refusal to redecorate, plus old time's sake. however: is always rammed with dobsticks)

• the station (it worries me that this might be my all-time favourite glasgow bar, it really does)

• the variety (for the music and the darknes, and the astonishingly stupid bar staff who'll charge you < a tenner for three doubles)

christ i really can't remember other pubs i like. there's clockwork on holmlea road, but it's a) not exactly handy for anyone who doesn't live near me, and b) allegedly owned by ... actually, no, i'm not mentioning this on a public forum.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 9 June 2005 21:12 (twenty years ago)

Keith, they probably have My Sharona as well.

i'm 99 per cent sure they do.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 9 June 2005 21:12 (twenty years ago)

alba has experienced the joys of the station bar, and has seen me fall over the little step on the way to the bog. we need him to give an unbiased opinion.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 9 June 2005 21:13 (twenty years ago)

Keith, they probably have My Sharona as well.

That's impressive actually... Is it an old 45 playing jukebox? Will there be any banjo players in the pub?

KeefW (kmw), Thursday, 9 June 2005 21:16 (twenty years ago)

in a metaphorical "deliverance" stylee?

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 9 June 2005 21:19 (twenty years ago)

alba has experienced the joys of the station bar, and has seen me fall over the little step on the way to the bog. we need him to give an unbiased opinion.

It is not bad. Of city centre bars, I like the Griffin. And The State, though I don't think I've ever been in The State as such. Also I like The Brunswick Cellars, on a younger tip. And The Universal, on a poncier one. I do not like the Alpen Lodge.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 9 June 2005 21:19 (twenty years ago)

Ned, recently in London I told PJMiller that he was the person I'd known the longest without actually meeting, having spoken to him on the interweb since about 1996, but thinking about it, despite not conversing much, it's probably actually you, who I think I conversed with over useweb in about 1994. That's about when I met you Simon! When you had a leather jacket, a beard, and refused to listen to anyone except Yazoo!

KeefW (kmw), Thursday, 9 June 2005 21:20 (twenty years ago)

Oh, and on a poncy/younger crossover tip, I like the Republic Bierhalle and its newish sister bar off Sauchiehall St.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 9 June 2005 21:20 (twenty years ago)

There's a place in Coatbridge that do Bucky on tap

KeefW (kmw), Thursday, 9 June 2005 21:22 (twenty years ago)

Well, I'm voting for the Station Bar (I've never been there, but grimly fiendish has totally sold it to me)

(last time I saw Keith he was bouncing around to My Sharona rather enthusiastically. One time before that we were talking about how the kids of today don't appreciate Dire Straits. I bet he wants to go to the Station Bar too)

I like Sleazys and the Griffin and the State and the Atholl and Lauders and O'Henrys and basically anywhere non-poncy that non-expensive booze.

(xpost - Sarry Heid FAP!)

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 9 June 2005 21:22 (twenty years ago)

When you had a leather jacket, a beard, and refused to listen to anyone except Yazoo!

i take great exception to that. i mean, i also listened to OMD.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 9 June 2005 21:23 (twenty years ago)

Ailsa, that wasn't that last time. Met you in the Drum & Monkey when Hopkins was up...

KeefW (kmw), Thursday, 9 June 2005 21:24 (twenty years ago)

and the Atholl

?!

well, someone has to :)

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 9 June 2005 21:24 (twenty years ago)

Simon, sorry! You're right of course... And yes, Deliverance style banjos. I still want to know who owns that pub you were talking about. Is it the Cook twins?

KeefW (kmw), Thursday, 9 June 2005 21:26 (twenty years ago)

Oh yeah, I forgot about that. Booze and ruin and trying to explain the SPL split to Tim all took their toll. (xpost)

Atholl = cheap, next to cinema, quiz machine that always pays out, chance to bump into Jim Delahunt. What's not to love?

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 9 June 2005 21:28 (twenty years ago)

The Atholl is pretty rubbish. I did see Jerry Sadowitz through the window in there the other day though. I don't know what that "though" means, quite.

Go INTERMEZZO.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 9 June 2005 21:29 (twenty years ago)

Ailsa, funnily enough in the past, we did consider the Sarry Heid for Sinister meet ups. Quite suitable, I thought.

KeefW (kmw), Thursday, 9 June 2005 21:29 (twenty years ago)

walkabout.

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 9 June 2005 21:30 (twenty years ago)

It has everything.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 9 June 2005 21:31 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I've been there with Calumn pre-B&S at the Barrowlands. No-one else was untwee enough to join us.

(xpost about the Sarry, I hate Walkabout with a passion, but it does have excellently big tellies for football watching purposes)

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 9 June 2005 21:31 (twenty years ago)

Does the Goose still have 1970s prices? A couple of years ago I got a round in at 92p a pint in Leith. Can any of your readers beat that?

KeefW (kmw), Thursday, 9 June 2005 21:32 (twenty years ago)

Apparently two Glasgow pubs have been featured on Vol.1 and 2 of Sky's Worst Pubs in Britain programme. One was the only Rangers pub in Parkhead I think and the other was somewhere in Shettleston. I don't have Sky. Can someone confirm?

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 9 June 2005 21:35 (twenty years ago)

I'm pretty sure the Louden Tavern (the Rangers pub in Duke Street) was featured.

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 9 June 2005 21:36 (twenty years ago)

Results 1 - 2 of about 4 for "worst pub in glasgow"

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 9 June 2005 21:37 (twenty years ago)

Haha!

Avoid unless you are well tooled up

KeefW (kmw), Thursday, 9 June 2005 21:39 (twenty years ago)

I think we have a venue.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 9 June 2005 21:39 (twenty years ago)

Let's defer to Stevie Jackson:

cf: what's the best pub in glasgow?
stevie: depends what you're looking for. nice 'n' sleazy if you're into the local music scene and star spotting. it's also got a good juke box and the food is really good. it's a bit like max fish in NYC I suppose. the halt has the best open stage -- that's where I met stuarts murdoch and david.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 9 June 2005 21:42 (twenty years ago)

in all seriousness, sleazy's is a decent bet for a mon/tue night. there shouldn't be quite as many chumpingtons as you get at the weekend. and it's A ROCK LEGEND and so on. surely ned wants to go back home and tell everyone how he sat by the pool table, at the table where ken out of the supernaturals once gave blokey from aereogramme a mildly dirty look?

still, the station rocks. neil diamond and meat loaf, let's not forget.

the sarry heid: brrr. not been in there since the famous b*g *ssu3 xmas pub crawl of 1997, during which someone pulled a gun on me in the new monaco bar. i sincerely hope the only reason the new monaco isn't in that pubtopia list is because it's closed down.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 9 June 2005 21:49 (twenty years ago)

Is it the Cook twins?

hahahahah. no. tragically.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 9 June 2005 21:50 (twenty years ago)

A gun! That happened to a friend of mine in Volcano, years ago. Did he bust a cap in your ass? That's pretty rough actually. Let's avoid there then, even if it is closed down.

The station sounds good. Although we could be in for trouble. The jukebox might call someone's pint 'rockist'.

KeefW (kmw), Thursday, 9 June 2005 21:53 (twenty years ago)

it's a shame Ned's not going to be here for a sunday.

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 9 June 2005 21:58 (twenty years ago)

You going to come out though, Colin. Would be good to chat for more than the five seconds or so the last time!

KeefW (kmw), Thursday, 9 June 2005 21:59 (twenty years ago)

indeed i will! did i see you for about a minute at the arches that time?

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 9 June 2005 22:03 (twenty years ago)

I had no idea the New Monaco was ever actually open (I've driven past it many a weekend, Parkhead-bound). It looks awful. There are many of those stupid concrete pubs around the East End but the other awful ones at least have the benefit of being within short staggering distance of Parkhead without having to stagger through Bridgeton and run the risk of being chibbed.

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 9 June 2005 22:04 (twenty years ago)

Colin, yes!

KeefW (kmw), Thursday, 9 June 2005 22:06 (twenty years ago)

Glasgow is notoriously bad at organising drinking

Who would have thought it?

I have always regretted not managing the New Monaco Bar on ladies night when it was 80p for a cider or something (LOOK! LOOK!)

I'd be into this all the same. Let's go boozing, Glasgow!

scotstvo (scotstvo), Thursday, 9 June 2005 22:10 (twenty years ago)

it's a shame Ned's not going to be here for a sunday.

Alas! Another time, good friends. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 9 June 2005 23:08 (twenty years ago)

no love for the doublet? :-(

stirmonster (stirmonster), Thursday, 9 June 2005 23:35 (twenty years ago)

I like the Doublet, but I was just focusing on central places.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 9 June 2005 23:39 (twenty years ago)

ah yes, good point. i guess as i rarely venture beyond the top of woodlands road i tend to forget there's a world beyond.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Friday, 10 June 2005 00:14 (twenty years ago)

the doublet! see, that's another for my list of topp bars.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 10 June 2005 05:22 (twenty years ago)

fuckabout.

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 10 June 2005 05:56 (twenty years ago)

I like the doublet too, it's alright.

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 10 June 2005 05:58 (twenty years ago)

I like the Steps Bar. It has a snug and could take over as the new Carnarvon, now there isn't a Carnarvon.

I would like to try the Alpen Lodge again - I don't think we went in at the best time.

I also like the Three Judges and the Bon Accord, but they're further out.

Mädchen (Madchen), Friday, 10 June 2005 08:31 (twenty years ago)

I'm up for trying Glasgow and discussing the purpleness of Ned's "blue" tie.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Friday, 10 June 2005 08:39 (twenty years ago)

x-post: i like the steps bar too. very good beer. full of sinister old men in ties last time i was in, mind.

[insert joke of your choice here]

where was the carnarvon? that rings a bell.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 10 June 2005 08:50 (twenty years ago)

Carnarvon Street! (near St George's Cross is probably the answer you were after)

Mädchen (Madchen), Friday, 10 June 2005 10:18 (twenty years ago)

:p

i still can't place it, though. and i used to be the charing x kid too. ho well.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 10 June 2005 11:35 (twenty years ago)

A block or two down from the Grassroots Cafe, is the poncier answer.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 10 June 2005 12:05 (twenty years ago)

Wow, the Glasgow lot sure are better at organising. (Or should that just be talking.)

The Square Root Of Negative Two (kate), Friday, 10 June 2005 12:07 (twenty years ago)

gossiping.

Mädchen (Madchen), Friday, 10 June 2005 12:15 (twenty years ago)

avoiding doing any work.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 10 June 2005 12:19 (twenty years ago)

wanking.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 10 June 2005 12:19 (twenty years ago)

oh, it's you who does that, is it? i did wonder about the grubby marks.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 10 June 2005 12:21 (twenty years ago)

I've made myself indispensable to the business. The readers demand it.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 10 June 2005 12:22 (twenty years ago)

Pervertalism.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 10 June 2005 12:23 (twenty years ago)

Hi Ned! Are you coming to visit the Dubliners?

Lara (Lara), Friday, 10 June 2005 16:34 (twenty years ago)

Alas not this time, Ms. Lara! Or at least my itinerary will not allow for it unless there's a random change of plans towards the end of the trip and I leave Italy early. So you'll just have to come to London or Glasgow if you can. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 10 June 2005 16:38 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
ho, this draws ever closer. so i thought i'd bump the thread in the hope that somebody else makes lots of plans/bakes pie pies (hello ailsa)/etc.

this time i shall probably be accompanied by my estimable friend and colleague stet, whom some of you will know from ILM/threads involving computers or the opportunity to take the piss out of me about my clothes/visits to their flat to pick up furniture or drink their gin. (well, ok: only alba's going to know him from that. although ... well, what people get up to in their spare time never ceases to amaze me.)

anyway. i'm up for trying the station, but the tables are a little small ... as, indeed, is the whole place. ailsa: didn't you have some fantastic suggestion as to a top pub?

(see: passing the responsibility already. heh.)

ooh jesus look at the time, fuck, i need to be at work. arses.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 07:41 (twenty years ago)

work is for arses, yes
you're being super organised. we're still weeks away!are you that excited to see ned?

dahlin (dahlin), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 10:05 (twenty years ago)

yes. in my spare time i am crafting small gifts and totems for him.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 10:24 (twenty years ago)

hehehe nice. i never took you for the crafty type, but then again not all is revealed in a few hours down the pub i suppose. bet you never guessed i'm an educational film star, for instance.
are they themed?

dahlin (dahlin), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 10:29 (twenty years ago)

Blue Dog! Woof.

stet (stet), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 12:02 (twenty years ago)

These are visions.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 12:08 (twenty years ago)

have you ever been to glasgow before ned?

dahlin (dahlin), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 14:16 (twenty years ago)

Yus, in 1992 for about five days and then again briefly in 2001.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 14:21 (twenty years ago)

You REALLY REALLY need a pub steering committee up there, doncha my dears.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 14:25 (twenty years ago)

watch out! we're going to crash into Oran Mor! Turn! Turn!
no! accelerate!
let's vote!

sorry

stet (stet), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 15:29 (twenty years ago)

I am absolutely the worst person at deciding top pubs. I think my suggestion was "not the Drum & Monkey again please". Cheap booze and bad hangovers can be had at a variety of horrid pubs like O'Henrys and the Brewery Tap (which was the scene of the first Glasgow FAP - OK, ex-sinister picnic disguised as Glasgow FAP) however the former is quite small and not conducive to good seating arrangements, the latter is reviled by everyone who isn't me.

Are we going for cheapness and conduciveness to conversation, or some other criteria?

Blue Dog! Woof.

Madchen! Bonzo has been invoked!

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 16:01 (twenty years ago)

it's got to be Mono, surely? good music, fantastic record shop on the premises. i can imagine Ned would feel quite at home there.

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 16:36 (twenty years ago)

That was indeed suggested. Would I be failing in my life if I admitted I've NEVER BEEN TO MONO? I'm not sure how I've managed to let it come to this. Is it conducive to sitting down and talking?

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 17:30 (twenty years ago)

yes but there is still time to turn it around ailsa. it is conductive.

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 17:32 (twenty years ago)

I think I shall make it my mission this weekend to visit Mono on the pretence that I am assessing its suitability as a FAP venue. This will obviously involve tasting the alcoholic wares for suitability and buying records. Hurrah! Does Stephen Pastel still work there?

If weather is nice, I vote for Oran Mor so we can sit outside while its nice then not sit outside when it gets not nice later.

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 17:34 (twenty years ago)

To help with all this (if it does) -- I arrive at Glasgow Prestwick at around 5:15 pm on the Monday, assuming no delays.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 17:36 (twenty years ago)

i vote for mono rather than oran mor for several reasons:
1) it's in the city centre, which in turn makes it easier for
a) me, as I have no idea when I might get off work, but it will likely be after 9pm
b) ned, as he'll be arriving at central at around 7pm
c) lots of other people I'm sure
2) at oran mor we'd be subjected to ponce west end types/annoying students (yes, i realise how hypocrital that is)
3) nice weather? scotland? ha!
mono is quite spacious and usually quiet, thus very conducive to natter chatter. also it is vegan - including its alcohol - tho i'm not sure if that is a plus or minus. and a hungry ned could even eat there. and it's not a scary place to sit on your own and wait, if need be. and yes, pastel still works there

dahlin (dahlin), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 17:53 (twenty years ago)

also Oran Mor is rather corporate and sterile and it would be nice to show Ned some new place in Glasgow that exists not primarly to make as much money as possible but to provide a nice space for people who are into the sorts of things that many of us are to meet and be (ahem) *merry*.

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 18:02 (twenty years ago)

and as dahlin says - anyone that comes early can wander round the record shop or eat quite cheaply or just gawk at Steven Pastel.

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 18:04 (twenty years ago)

Sounds good to me. I only said Oran Mor because I was supposed to be there at the weekend when it was nice, but wasn't. And I like sitting outside and laughing at ponces (it is also next door to my old flat so I can nostalgically laugh at when I was a West End ponce also)

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 18:13 (twenty years ago)

do i get to meet jed then too?

dahlin (dahlin), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 18:15 (twenty years ago)

However, I still want to try this Station Bar place at some time too.

Also, aren't people going to Mono on the Tuesday to watch Dot to Dot?

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 18:15 (twenty years ago)

oh yeah

dahlin (dahlin), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 18:20 (twenty years ago)

thank god someone's paying attention. will this be a two-day FAP then? in two venues? wow. what a treat. ok, let's pick another place then. i'd suggest the living room but it might be too posh for the likes of us. should we just do station bar?

dahlin (dahlin), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 18:23 (twenty years ago)

will this be a two-day FAP then? in two venues? wow. what a treat.

Yay! I would be all for this. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 18:24 (twenty years ago)

oh we're already going to Mono another night? i didn't know that.

dahlin, you will!

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 18:25 (twenty years ago)

plus you get to see DOT TO DOT. ally c looking sexxy. you lucky, lucky boy
and i'm a lucky lucky girl apparently. will i be able to contain my excitement?

dahlin (dahlin), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 18:26 (twenty years ago)

Cheers cheers for the station bar. and mono. Not that I'm voting, just cheering. In the corner here.

stet (stet), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 18:53 (twenty years ago)

you just want to be able to roll out of work into the pub

dahlin (dahlin), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 18:56 (twenty years ago)

If it were up to me this would be in the New Arlington.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 19:00 (twenty years ago)

xpost. Um, er, maybe [mutters in corner]

stet (stet), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 19:20 (twenty years ago)

Tracer, if you make the trip to Glasgow you can choose.

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 19:30 (twenty years ago)

and we'll throw a deep fried anything into the deal as well

dahlin (dahlin), Thursday, 30 June 2005 07:58 (twenty years ago)

Let's not forget that Mono is a Sam Smith's pub, always conducive to a good FAP as any Londoner know. Even if Mono only has the white beer and organic cola. But then they do brew their own ginger beer.

Mädchen (Madchen), Thursday, 30 June 2005 08:39 (twenty years ago)

stewart smith, who runs "beard" magazine and posts around these parts every so often, is putting on a "free night of live music, fun and facial hair" at mono on the 11th. this sounds great. however: doing mono for two nights in a row seems a little daft. surely the point of the first night will be to go: "wahey, ned" and drink beer; the second will be to watch dot-to-dot and go: "can anyone remember what happened last night, then?"

the station will be too small for monday, i can guarantee it. what we need is a decently sized bar that isn't soulless and shit.

what's sleazy's like on a monday: busy or not?

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 30 June 2005 08:54 (twenty years ago)

It's been a while since I've been there (and I'm not Trying Glasgow More during NedFAP anyway, so feel free to ignore me) but isn't 13th Note a decent size and not soulless? One of the booths against the window would be about the right size.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Thursday, 30 June 2005 09:15 (twenty years ago)

good call!

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 30 June 2005 09:29 (twenty years ago)

and you're not just saying that so you can sneak off across te road if we get boring, are you?

dahlin (dahlin), Thursday, 30 June 2005 19:02 (twenty years ago)

any consensus yet then?

dahlin (dahlin), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 10:41 (twenty years ago)

I was in The Lansdowne tonight. It was nice! If you don't mind a bit of swank.

http://www.lansdownebar.co.uk/

Ally C (Ally C), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 22:33 (twenty years ago)

Attention attention -- RJG, being full of wisdom, suggested to me that I browbeat one of you kindly ask to see if someone is available to meet me in Glasgow once I arrive next Monday. Plane lands at 5:15 pm.

As I'm coming in via EasyJet, apparently that's Glasgow International = there's a bus route to Buchanan St. Station, if that's a logical place to go.

Volunteers, shanghai'd recruits, etc. welcome.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 22:43 (twenty years ago)

oooh i've been curious about that place for ages! i'm game, esp as it's right round the corner from me house.
sorry ned, i would, but i'll be workin

dahlin (dahlin), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 08:52 (twenty years ago)

dahlin: curious about the bus station?

sadly, ned, i'll be working till late (9-ish, most probably), so the best i can do is hoy along and meet you later on. (are we still on for the 13th note? i think that's a corking suggestion.)

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 08:59 (twenty years ago)

no, the LANSDOWNE dumbass. hmph.

dahlin (dahlin), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 09:01 (twenty years ago)

oh, i see. [mental note: always read more than the last two posts.]

good website, that lansdowne one!

i still think tha NOTE is tha place to go. it's got nice big tables etc, it's not expensive, it's pretty central ... and it's an authentic slice of glasgow history. (sort of.)

however, like i say ... i'll be meeting you all later, so if you choose to meet in - for instance - jinty sodding mcginty's then there's bugger all i can do about it.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 09:03 (twenty years ago)

Sorry Simon, but as we're going to Mono on Tuesday (which is right next to The Note obv), would it not be better to show Ned more than one corner of the city?

If there are no objections to The Lansdowne, I propose it. It has a CONSERVATORY. Unless you'd all prefer somewhere with more riff-raff old Glasgow character. I don't really mind. But I guess we should make a decision sometime.

Ally C (Ally C), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 17:25 (twenty years ago)

Yes please. Er, if you see what I mean.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 17:25 (twenty years ago)

Ned, if you can get outside the airport you will find buses to Paisley. I can meet you there if you so wish. In fact, even better (for you) I finish work at 5 and can get to the airport in a short period of time and meet you and escort you to Glasgow. This email address is rubbish so get me at ailsa dot watson at g mail dot com if this is OK with you.

I like the Landsdowne but I haven't been there since about 1996.

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 17:49 (twenty years ago)

Thanks Ailsa! I've just sent you a note.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 17:56 (twenty years ago)

I am off next wednesday, so I should be able to come to a little of mono

which means I get to go record shopping again

c/n (Cozen), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 21:25 (twenty years ago)

mono

c/n (Cozen), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 21:28 (twenty years ago)

I am still at work. I hope not to be working these hours July 11th through 13th!

Mädchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 22:07 (twenty years ago)

Working after midnight (c. Patsy Cline)? Are you mental?

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 22:15 (twenty years ago)

Ned: I have to check with my colleague tomorrow re. a lift to the airport from work, I'll mail you when I have that sorted.

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 22:16 (twenty years ago)

Y'all actin' like this is such a big deal. Aren't there always neds in Glasgow?

Ian Riese-Moraine has been xeroxed into a conduit! (Eastern Mantra), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 23:13 (twenty years ago)

Ned: I have to check with my colleague tomorrow re. a lift to the airport from work, I'll mail you when I have that sorted.

Great, thanks! You're terribly kind!

Aren't there always neds in Glasgow?

Astounding!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 7 July 2005 00:29 (twenty years ago)

Are there plans yet? As I am currently the potential Ned welcoming committee, it would be nice to know where to be getting him to, and when. My car has fallen apart again, so my plan of taking him somewhere with his stuff then parking my car overnight in the West End and going to the pub may have fallen by the wayside.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 9 July 2005 09:31 (twenty years ago)

Hm! Well something will come up, I'll sit on my luggage in the pub if I have to. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 9 July 2005 10:29 (twenty years ago)

What time do you get in, Ned, and where to? The Plan is Lansdowne on Monday, Mono on Tuesday, right?

Mädchen (Madchen), Saturday, 9 July 2005 13:36 (twenty years ago)

I'll be working in Glasgow on Monday and poss. Tuesday -- since I have to come back to Ed. on Monday night to unplumb our washing machine and leave it out for the binmen, I might be able to come to anything on the Tues. I know what some of you look like, I think.

alext (alext), Saturday, 9 July 2005 13:54 (twenty years ago)

I'm sure I'll come out. I would like to see Ned and the Landsdowne.

Cathy (Cathy), Saturday, 9 July 2005 13:58 (twenty years ago)

lansdowne it is then! woo! consensus! finally! yay!
(and convenience too. bonus)
see you there, then

dahlin (dahlin), Saturday, 9 July 2005 15:20 (twenty years ago)

"stewart smith, who runs "beard" magazine and posts around these parts every so often, is putting on a "free night of live music, fun and facial hair" at mono on the 11th. this sounds great."

Indeed it does. Thanks Simon! It's free, it's on from 8 to midnight, we've got three great bands and me and my co-conspirators spinning some tunes. I don't have beard I'm afraid, but I'll be easy enough to find should anyone wish to drop by.

Here's the press release:
To launch the new issue of the award winning Beard zine we’re hosting a free night of live music, fun and facial hair at Glasgow’s Mono bar on Monday July 11.

Dedicated to music, arts and facial hair, Beard was awarded Best Music Fanzine at the EMAP Fanzine Awards 2005. The judges said: "Stood out like a beacon. It has loads of great ideas, illustrations and an ingenious use of language. And very funny indeed"

Headlining the show are Beard favourites The Sky At Night. One of the finest young bands in Glasgow, TSAN combine the dreamy elegance of Galaxie 500 with a country tinged melancholy. Their self released album, Hope For Dummies, has been a word of mouth underground hit, and they’ve already supported the likes of Damon & Naomi and Belle & Sebastian’s Stevie Jackson.

Joining the party all the way from over the ocean: Atlanta, Georgia's indie-rock maestro Mack Messiah. Mack has been exploring the outer limits of the guitar-bass-drum paradigm and has promised something a bit special when he unveils his new backing band at this exclusive warm-up performance for his first full Scottish tour.

Fresh from wowing the crowds at Glasgow’s Tenement Fair, country-fried power-popsters Skeleton Bob complete the line up. Think Evan Dando, Jonathan Richman and Uncle Tupelo and smile.

Filling in the gaps will be a motley crew of Beard DJs, spinning a dazzling and perverse range of tunes. Expect anything from The Dirtbombs to Os Mutantes, MIA to Springsteen.

There will also be a chance to pick up the new issue of Beard, featuring cult artists from Scotland and beyond. Outsider legend Daniel Johnston tells us what inspires his heartbreaking songs, while fellow Texans …And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of The Dead talk politics and bling.
We delve into the mythic truths of folk bard Alasdair Roberts, discuss David Lynch with Sons And Daughters, and meet Glasgow’s most literate new band, My Latest Novel. We jet off with International Airport and find electro-popsters Multiplies dreaming of dolphins.
All this and a plethora of reviews, rants, comic strips and whiskery nonsense.

Ok, shameless plug over.

Stew (stew s), Saturday, 9 July 2005 15:27 (twenty years ago)

I will be there on tuesday, at mono, from what time?

cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 9 July 2005 18:37 (twenty years ago)

Just to warn you, there's a gig on in Mono on Tuesday night as well and, unlike the Beard night, it ain't free. But it's only £3 for Architecture In Helsinki, Dot To Dot and a very special special guest. I know who the guest is but am not at liberty to say. But it's quite exciting if you're into mid to late 90s Glasgow indie...
I'll be along at that though, mind if I join the FAP fun? I know Stacey and have met Cozen before...

Stew (stew s), Sunday, 10 July 2005 00:26 (twenty years ago)

damn, and I just shaved.

stet (stet), Sunday, 10 July 2005 00:37 (twenty years ago)

But it's quite exciting if you're into mid to late 90s Glasgow indie...

god, no.

I'll be along at that though, mind if I join the FAP fun?

god, yes!

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 10 July 2005 00:38 (twenty years ago)

i mean "yes do" of course, not "yes i mind"

sorry.

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 10 July 2005 00:40 (twenty years ago)

pissed

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 10 July 2005 00:41 (twenty years ago)

I am prepared to pay £3 to see Dot to Dot, I think.

Mädchen (Madchen), Sunday, 10 July 2005 07:23 (twenty years ago)

This is all strange merriment.

I arrive tomorrow at 5:15 pm, if everything keeps to schedule. I'll be checking mail through tomorrow morning at least (as well as checking here) so any further info on where specifically I should go (as well as how) when I arrive v. fully appreciated. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 10 July 2005 08:04 (twenty years ago)

Which airport do you get into, Ned?

Mädchen (Madchen), Sunday, 10 July 2005 08:05 (twenty years ago)

RJG says I must be getting into Glasgow International as EasyJet uses that. (In contrast my Wednesday flight to Charleroi is RyanAir, ergo Prestwick.) My Monday flight receipt just says 'Glasgow' rather than 'Glasgow Prestwick' so I do not doubt the good RJG.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 10 July 2005 08:37 (twenty years ago)

OK, well if Ailsa can't pick you up, get bus 905 from outside the airport. Buy your ticket on the bus (£3.50 single I think). Get off at Queen Street train station, then get the subway (Buchanan Street subway station, just round the corner) to Kelvinbridge. Take the escalator up to the exit on Great Western Road, then follow this map http://www.streetmap.co.uk/streetmap.dll?G2M?X=257679&Y=666969&A=Y&Z=1 to Lansdowne Crescent, where you will find the pub in question. Of course, somebody might meet you and show you the way, but this level of detail will make sure you don't get lost. We wouldn't want that, would we?

Mädchen (Madchen), Sunday, 10 July 2005 09:18 (twenty years ago)

If you are in at 5.15 I can still get a bus to the airport from work and make sure you don't get lost on the way to the pub.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 10 July 2005 09:22 (twenty years ago)

Thanks to you both! :-) Ailsa, send me your number and I'll call you from Luton in case there's a delay on that end; otherwise you can assume the 5:15 arrival time holds. And M.'s info will act as a backup. Rah!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 10 July 2005 09:36 (twenty years ago)

where you stayin again?

dahlin (dahlin), Sunday, 10 July 2005 10:18 (twenty years ago)

i shall see you all in the lansdowne (ally: your point about the 13th note upthread is very true) at some point tomorrow night. i'm not sure when i'll be able to get away from work: it'll probably be the back of 9pm.

i've only just worked out where/what the lansdowne is: i used to go there occasionally a few years back. can't remember the first thing about it, except there was a post box at the end of the street and it was handy for getting to the woodside. what more can you want from a pub?

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Sunday, 10 July 2005 11:50 (twenty years ago)

Dahlin -- RJG and Ally C are my kind hosts.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 11 July 2005 07:07 (twenty years ago)

oh dear. good luck with that! see you soon

dahlin (dahlin), Monday, 11 July 2005 08:32 (twenty years ago)

The postbox was noted yesterday. It looks like they built a wall especially to house it.

Mädchen (Madchen), Monday, 11 July 2005 08:38 (twenty years ago)

did you stake out the lansdowne then?
i hear you stopped by here too. too bad i wasn't around to benefit :(
i wanna see the new 148! maybe i'll sneak a peek tonight.
ps: hi lucy. how's work today?

dahlin (dahlin), Monday, 11 July 2005 08:42 (twenty years ago)

Hi Dahlin! Stressful for a variety of reasons. Looking forward to the pub tonight. We walked past Lansdowne Crescent on the way to a very late breakfast at Cherubini's yesterday.

Mädchen (Madchen), Monday, 11 July 2005 08:47 (twenty years ago)

that's the oldest post box in glasgow and one of the only one's in the UK with an Edward VIII insignia (i may be making this up. the second part, anyway).

jed_ (jed), Monday, 11 July 2005 08:50 (twenty years ago)

awww sounds delightful. i was let out mega early lasnight and went to pub quiz. there were three of us. we lost. but succeeded in drinking. looking forward to similar success tonight. woo hoo!
(wow jed. you are full of fun facts)

dahlin (dahlin), Monday, 11 July 2005 08:52 (twenty years ago)

Ned - if you read this I apologise in advance for the state of our flat. We have only just finished moving in - if we can clear enough space for you to lie down it will be a job well done.

Ally C (Ally C), Monday, 11 July 2005 08:53 (twenty years ago)

(idea: employ Ned to hold the TV aerial)

Mädchen (Madchen), Monday, 11 July 2005 08:54 (twenty years ago)

Wow! But could I fall asleep in such a position?

Ally: fret not. Hell, I'll help move stuff in if it'll help.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 11 July 2005 09:03 (twenty years ago)

Anyway, thanks again all for the info. Looks like I'm meeting Ailsa at the airport but I have the alternate info just in case. See everyone tonight!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 11 July 2005 09:05 (twenty years ago)

The moving in part is done. It's the 'finding space for stuff in a flat two thirds the size of the one you've just left' part which is causing problems.

Ally C (Ally C), Monday, 11 July 2005 09:31 (twenty years ago)

looking at the frankly terrifying amount of work i have to do before wednesday lunchtime, it seems likely that

a) i will be a good bit later than 9pm tonight

and

b) i'll be similarly late tomorrow. what time does the gig start tomorrow; what time are dot to dot on; and what time does mono shut?

questions, questions. always with the questions.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 11 July 2005 10:19 (twenty years ago)

Mr.Ned, sir - when do you come back to London? I couldn't make the FAPs this last w'kend, but may be around next time? Have fun. Rah.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Monday, 11 July 2005 10:43 (twenty years ago)

word on the street is: doors open for tomorrow's gig at 9pm, so assuming dot to dot will be on around 9.30. no idea when it shuts, but i'm guessing midnight or so
more important q: are you wearing your pinstripe linen suit? must be hot in there

dahlin (dahlin), Monday, 11 July 2005 13:33 (twenty years ago)

Just to clarify, when are people actually going to the boozer tonight? I've got stuff to do later on, but wouldn't mind popping in for a while.

scotstvo (scotstvo), Monday, 11 July 2005 13:57 (twenty years ago)

i think some people might be there quite early, possibly 7 pm. i'll be there whenever i can get out of work, which could be as late as 10pm.

dahlin (dahlin), Monday, 11 July 2005 14:00 (twenty years ago)

In that case I shall miss you this evening, alas. Can anyone else confirm or deny these reports of seven o'clock?

scotstvo (scotstvo), Monday, 11 July 2005 14:01 (twenty years ago)

more important q: are you wearing your pinstripe linen suit? must be hot in there

sadly no. until wednesday, the keks will be in the possession of the lovely melissa, of st enoch square, who is fixing the piss-poor hemming job that "star stitch" of miller street did.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 11 July 2005 14:23 (twenty years ago)

Is there anything good or worthwhile on Miller Street?

scotstvo (scotstvo), Monday, 11 July 2005 14:25 (twenty years ago)

I'm aiming to get there for around seven o'clock, domestics permitting. My mother-in-law had the cheek to be on a delayed flight from France and I need to watch the kids until my wife gets her from the airport before I can go out. Ailsa and Ned should be there quite early, I should think, assuming his flight is on time.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Monday, 11 July 2005 14:31 (twenty years ago)

I'm leaving work at 6, so I should be there around 6.30.

Mädchen (Madchen), Monday, 11 July 2005 14:33 (twenty years ago)

i'm trying to convince mr dahlin to come, but i think he's frightened

dahlin (dahlin), Monday, 11 July 2005 14:41 (twenty years ago)

But it's only little old us!

Mädchen (Madchen), Monday, 11 July 2005 15:06 (twenty years ago)

well, there will be strangers there too! maybe it's just an excuse to stay at home away from me, practicing bass and playing baseball manager

dahlin (dahlin), Monday, 11 July 2005 15:10 (twenty years ago)

strangers are only friends you haven't fallen out with and grown to loathe yet.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 11 July 2005 15:16 (twenty years ago)

That said, never take a sweetie off one.

scotstvo (scotstvo), Monday, 11 July 2005 15:23 (twenty years ago)

strangers are ... me! hurra hurra

stet (stet), Monday, 11 July 2005 15:56 (twenty years ago)

you gonna be there stet? will i have another media whore to gossip with???

dahlin (dahlin), Monday, 11 July 2005 16:06 (twenty years ago)

Yus, I'll be there shortly after 10 hopefully. With fresh gossip in tow

stet (stet), Monday, 11 July 2005 16:08 (twenty years ago)

o great, h3r4ld back-bench gossip. yeh, that's gonna be fuckin' thrilling.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 11 July 2005 16:34 (twenty years ago)

SOMEone has their knickers in a bunch today, eh?
don't worry, i'll only discuss important things with you then. like fashion. or something

dahlin (dahlin), Monday, 11 July 2005 16:49 (twenty years ago)

i bet some of them are already there now... drinking... laughing...
mmmmmm....

dahlin (dahlin), Monday, 11 July 2005 16:50 (twenty years ago)

SOMEone has their knickers in a bunch today, eh?

today and every day. ow.

drinking and laughing? hah, i'd rather be toiling like a muthafucka on a 21-page feature, yo.

say it often enough and i might even believe it.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 11 July 2005 16:55 (twenty years ago)

xpost
well it was, but now it's gossip about grimly fiendish, ah heh heh heh. Lots of it. From the well-worn pages of my little black notebook.

I bet they're drinking gin.

stet (stet), Monday, 11 July 2005 16:56 (twenty years ago)

niiiiice
i'll bring my little black tape recorder then

dahlin (dahlin), Monday, 11 July 2005 16:58 (twenty years ago)

are you young and handsome stet? do you wear suits?

dahlin (dahlin), Monday, 11 July 2005 17:04 (twenty years ago)

[muffled mirth]

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 11 July 2005 17:05 (twenty years ago)

get back to work, you!

dahlin (dahlin), Monday, 11 July 2005 17:05 (twenty years ago)

now it's gossip about grimly fiendish

you should have been around when that troll was busy trollin' yesterday. he'd have appreciated that, i'm sure :)

anyway. you have nuthin' on me, sonny. whenever i do something stupid, i always make sure you drink just enough to completely and utterly forget what i've just done.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 11 July 2005 17:08 (twenty years ago)

oh yeh? I'm just glad when I'm drunk I can still work the camera in my mobile phone, mr sick-outside-the-co-op.

dahlin: well, I'm young, certainly.

stet (stet), Monday, 11 July 2005 17:11 (twenty years ago)

and, er, that's going by the average age of the people I work with, which is 102.

stet (stet), Monday, 11 July 2005 17:13 (twenty years ago)

mr sick-outside-the-co-op

now look, we've been over this. that wasn't me; that was my hitherto unknown - and since long-lost - identical twin, who came to glasgow for one night only, locked me in a cupboard and then proceeded to embarrass me by putting on a shameful show of not being able to hold his drink.

anyway: it wasn't the co-op, it was alld ... oh, curses, bugger.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 11 July 2005 17:13 (twenty years ago)

dorks

dahlin (dahlin), Monday, 11 July 2005 17:15 (twenty years ago)

norks.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 11 July 2005 17:19 (twenty years ago)

wait, there are norks for fapping? gosh, these internets are just hotbeds of something or other.

dahlin (dahlin), Monday, 11 July 2005 17:36 (twenty years ago)

ack! GET ME OUTTA HERE ALREADY! i wanna be drinking!

dahlin (dahlin), Monday, 11 July 2005 18:31 (twenty years ago)

hey, i'm having fun now. i'm subbing a travel piece and it's fucking brilliant (albeit some 500w too long). the sun is gleaming off the network rail building, right into my fucking screen, and a colleague and i are moaning about how shit coldplay are. this is what journalism is all about, yo.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 11 July 2005 18:33 (twenty years ago)

lucky duck.
shite. someone else just got the early cut. grrrrr

dahlin (dahlin), Monday, 11 July 2005 18:34 (twenty years ago)

Grimly and Stet, please tell me you didn't get so drunk that youtried to break back into your work?! (OK, next door to your work)

I have a sore head. I'm glad I'm not going to work today.

That was fun. Excellent, as expected, to meet the legend that is Ned. Slightly less excellent to be stalked by a photographer before everyone else turned up ("can you move somewhere else as the pub doesn't look busy enough?" - well don't turn up in a poncy pub on a Monday night when everyone's sitting outside because it's bloody warm and they don't have menkoists to meet up with). Expect photos of Madchen and Ned in a Herald near you, possibly with me and Scotstvo pretending not to be there.

Other highlights: Scotstvo's Flaming Lips story (and Ally C's excellent response); the entire blowjob conversation accompanied by unfortunately placed Guinness foam on top lips; Ned's refusal to be bemused by (in fact, his ability to remain interested in)a bunch of mentalists talking about Scottish lower division football and quoting John Lambie a lot.

And we've got to do it again tonight! Apologies to stet for introducing myself to him a million times on the way down Great Western Road, many thanks to grimly for flagging me down a taxi instead of leaving me wobbling about Woodlands Road all night, and thanks to Ned, Onimo, Scotstvo, Scotstvo's pal, Madchen, Ally C, Cathy, RJG, Dahlin, Mr Dahlin, Dave-who-doesn't-post-here and his pal, and the aforementioned Grimly Fiendish and Stet for excellent fun. Even if I didn't speak to half of you due to the conference-table type set-up.

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 07:06 (twenty years ago)

Oh, and Onimo, off to the ILX dreams thread with you...

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 07:31 (twenty years ago)

So who all is coming along tonight? What time are people aiming to be at Mono, so's I don't have to drink alone for long? (Ah, but you're never alone with a drink).

alext (alext), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 08:11 (twenty years ago)

ha, i've just been admiring some lovely pictures of ned and lucy deep in conversation (plus some of ally milling about in the background). the picture editor is very keen that you go in the paper, ned. "that hair! he's a must."

good to see everyone/meet new people last night. ned: tonight we shall actually talk properly! like i say, dunno what time i'll be out, but i shall do everything in my (admittedly limited) powers to make sure i'm there for the very first note of dot to dot.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 08:48 (twenty years ago)

awww how exciting! ned emblazoned in glasgow forever! sorry i missed it. actually, no. i'm glad i wasn't there to be photographed.
i didn't get to sleep last night. bah. i might actually be sick by the time i get out tonight. :( which will likely be early, alex. like 7 even, for sound check. but i don;t know you. ah well. mono is good for hanging out alone.

dahlin (dahlin), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 09:23 (twenty years ago)

am glad ned got to glasgow on time! crazy traffic in wimbledon meant we cut trip to station mighty fine

stevie (stevie), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 09:25 (twenty years ago)

where did you get to last night when we were leavin', dahlin'? i don't remember saying goodbye; you vanished, like an old oak table. [1]

you'll recognise alex by the essential aura of alex-ness that radiates from him. it is a joy to behold.

[1] extra dweeb points for the first person to get that reference.

(x-post)

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 09:27 (twenty years ago)

haha, Blackadder. I claim my free dweeb points (or a pint).

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 09:33 (twenty years ago)

that's funny, cos i seem to remember waving bye from the top step of ally's new flat entrance. tsk tsk. i...um.. saw the new flat, then went to my own, and posted lots and conversed lots with long lost friends on aim and sweated and... that's about it. exciting.
i'm afraid i get no dweeb points... but that's a good thing, right?

dahlin (dahlin), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 09:36 (twenty years ago)

ailsa: hurrah, a foaming pint of mono-flavoured goodness is yours for the taking.

dahlin: oh aye, so you did. sorry. i've managed to conflate you, ned, ally and RJG (whose resemblance to gr43m3 v1rtu3 is a joy to behold) into one step-waving entity.

anyway. just you concentrate on being healthy for tonight, now :)

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 09:50 (twenty years ago)

grimly, are those pictures for the proper bit? ie ... do I get to crop them, a heh heh?

good to eyeball everyone, even if I didn't quite manage to speak to you all. I was well introduced to Ailsa though, so all's well. I doubt I'll make the start of dot to dot, but will hove it down tonight when work's done.

stet (stet), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 10:03 (twenty years ago)

i can't believe it took five hours to talk that guy down... any other gossip boys?

dahlin (dahlin), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 10:05 (twenty years ago)

Stet, were you the person at the end of the table looking a bit shellshocked? I get confused about these things. I want to have a look at the Herald pictures so I can see if they're as good as the one RJG took of Cathy and me. I nearly drove Cathy the wrong way down a one-way street on the way back. She wasn't shaking too much when I dropped her off. Did we miss anything exciting after we left?

Mädchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 11:22 (twenty years ago)

you missed stet turning up (that wasn't him at the end of the table; that was scotstvo's pal, wasn't it?) and dahlin' being a dahlin' by buying me two bottles of lovely foaming beer. and, er, that was about it.

you look very glum in the photos, i must say. you have the air of a girl who's been told to interrupt her drink for the good of the herald.

the way things are looking on planet grimly, i'm gonna be late tonight so i might miss some of dot to dot. apologies in advance.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 11:26 (twenty years ago)

It wasn't even my pint! I had to borrow it.

Mädchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 11:32 (twenty years ago)

Did I successfully avoid being in them? Did the photographer tell you we were trying to ask if he knew you, except "some bloke called Simon whose surname we don't know who works somewhere doing something for the Herald" didn't seem to ring any bells. Maybe we should have mentioned your sideburns.

He didn't like me anyway as I kept hiding.

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 11:33 (twenty years ago)

there's a shot of the back of your head in one of them, ailsa. scotstvo is definitely in that one too; i think ally is cheesing about at the end of the table with a big grin as well.

the ones the picture editor likes are the ones of ned looking hairy and mädchen looking glum.

as for the photographer: i haven't actually seen him today, but next time he's in i shall jovially freak him the fuck out by passing on your regards.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 11:50 (twenty years ago)

Please destroy the ones of me. The back of my sweaty, humidity-frizzled hair is not a sight I would wish inflicted on the good readers of the herald.

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 11:54 (twenty years ago)

so is this for a restaurant/bar review, i'm assuming? do ned's luscious locks tie in with what they are trying to convey? frightening

dahlin (dahlin), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 11:56 (twenty years ago)

Oh my!

Am quickly checking mail at a Net cafe, have had lunch and a wander about with friend Kerr, who can't make it to the FAP tonight and kindly came into town now instead. As I told RJG on the phone (or so I hope, I left a message at least), I know where Mono is and can reach it easily enough, but am not totally sure of tonight's plans in terms of time. Will be going back to Ally C and RJG's place in a bit and shall chill there, but presume one or the other of them will swing by later with more info. Roxor etc. see everyone as I can tonight.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 11:57 (twenty years ago)

hey ned. if you need a chill partner, or indeed to be picked up pre-gig, i'm free.

dahlin (dahlin), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 11:59 (twenty years ago)

Oh yeah? Neat! Er, I guess either call Ally or RJG to work out how best to get a hold of me after I sign off. I'll be back at their place at the latest by 4 pm, I figure (were there dinner plans and/or were just going to eat there?)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 12:14 (twenty years ago)

Actually, hold that thought, just e-mail me your number ASAP and I can call you shortly. Thanks Dahlin!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 12:16 (twenty years ago)

not sure. i was gonna head over to mono at around 6pm with richard's bass for sound check. they'll probably have to eat. either way, you and i could get some grub while they do their rock star thing ;)
just emailed...

dahlin (dahlin), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 12:19 (twenty years ago)

I get out of work pretty early too -- can I join in on general early hanging around-ness too? I am v. curious to meet you / Ned finally: should I take the liberty of emailing my no. to someone / anyone? :-) (I am not normally this rub. at arrangements. Oh, I am, maybe)

alext (alext), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 12:30 (twenty years ago)

You crazy man. E-mail dahlin I figure. Seeya tonight! Dahlin, have number, will call.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 12:31 (twenty years ago)

Madchen, in one of them you look very composed at the bar, ordering a drink while everyone ovevr at the table is looking at the floor, roof, playing with their hair, hiding their faces. It makes me laugh, at least.

stet (stet), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 13:48 (twenty years ago)

http://www.sundayherald.com/img8310

I don't think I look like this

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 13:55 (twenty years ago)

a broken image link? no, you don't.

(i know the pic you're trying to post: believe me, he doesn't look like that either.)

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 13:56 (twenty years ago)

haha

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 13:56 (twenty years ago)

aww i wanna see!

dahlin (dahlin), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 14:00 (twenty years ago)

Mark Monnone is in town! Now I'm looking forward to tonight EVEN MORE. I will hopefully be down about 6pm.

Ally C (Ally C), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 14:28 (twenty years ago)

RJG, WHAT IS THAT?

(x-post, OH WOW!)

Mädchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 14:29 (twenty years ago)

it is supposed to be a photo of grae/\/\e \/irtue

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 14:31 (twenty years ago)

sorry not to get to meet the legend that is mr. raggett but a case of food poisoning has put paid to any drinking activity. i hope glasgow was good to you.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 20:03 (twenty years ago)

It is indeed Graeme.

Sorry I didn't meet everyone yesterday/today either, since I just got back from Budapest and Dublin and had to go to the dentist immediately.

KeefW (kmw), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 21:38 (twenty years ago)

did you eat an especially hard scone/chip tooth while imbibing too much cheap bier?

dahlin (dahlin), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 00:00 (twenty years ago)

God damn. Sorry to be a tease, but my camera's gone and corrupted all those bonny pictures that I pestered you all in the taking of. I'll see if any of those ever-so-friendly photogs at work have any rescue software etc tomorrow. Good to see you all.

stet (stet), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 00:02 (twenty years ago)

Very nice to meet Ned, Grimly et al! A good gig that. Architecture In Helsinki were ace. Afraid I missed Dot To Dot though - but, hey, there will be other times. Hope Ned's trip to Glasgow has been good to him.

Stew (stew s), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 00:27 (twenty years ago)

you're apologising for losing the photos? PHEW is more like it... mmmm
you missed a PET SHOP BOYS cover stew! and yes, AIH were ace!

dahlin (dahlin), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 02:10 (twenty years ago)

I sort of thought on the way home last night that you might have been taking the piss with the photos, and the reason you wouldn't let us see them was that they didn't actually exist, you were just setting off the flash to wind people up.

If anyone posts photos with me in them, I will hurt them.

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 06:14 (twenty years ago)

i think i might hurt stet anyway, just for the fun of it.

thanks all for a top couple of nights. cozen: props for being so spectacularly drunk and offensively charming. stew: you'll be pleased to know my copy of beard survived the trip home, despite me hitting alex about the head with it a lot. RJG: i will provide proper photographic evidence to support my theory soon.

and ned, it was magic to meet you. have a top one rocking your way round the rest of europe. just watch out for the groupies once your picture appears in the paper next week.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 07:03 (twenty years ago)

Stacy, sadly no. This was about 6 weeks ago on Rose Street, in a random incident, some bloke hit me in the face and I fell down stunned and smacked my front tooth off the ground. It's cracked and the nerve is dead. I needed root canal (yesterday) and a crown done. Back to the dentist on Friday and again in two weeks time to get the crown fitted.

KeefW (kmw), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 09:21 (twenty years ago)

what? fucking hell, keith. you got chinned for no reason?

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 09:22 (twenty years ago)

oh dear. root canal! sound very unfun! are you a chipmunk now? was it painful? are you on an ice cream only diet? did you punch back?

dahlin (dahlin), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 09:25 (twenty years ago)

Yes sore; jaw was sorer than the tooth, though that's recovered now... Can't eat very easily right now, although I've kind of got used to it. Didn't hit anyone back no.

KeefW (kmw), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 09:50 (twenty years ago)

That was fun! It was good to meet people for the first time and in a couple of cases for the second! I would just like to take this opportunity to underline the fact that my extremely speedy consumption of that first pint was due to having to sit for half an hour in a bar which was not serving, and not to any general alcoholism. Well, maybe a combination ;-)

And Keith -- ow! sorry to hear about yr battering.

alext (alext), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 09:51 (twenty years ago)

yup alex. sure. and it was hot and you were dehydrated and... we've heard it all before... that second one went down quite quickly as well. *raised eyebrows*

dahlin (dahlin), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 10:12 (twenty years ago)

Thanks Alex... Can't really complain. Things could be worse.

KeefW (kmw), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 10:43 (twenty years ago)

Poor Keith! After your hip as well. Ask your dentist to give you a good luck injection while he or she is at it.

Mädchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 11:09 (twenty years ago)

ach, don't worry, keith: these things come in threes.

[counts on fingers]

ah. ok: i'll zoom through to edinburgh and hoof you in the pods. that'll make three.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 12:12 (twenty years ago)

Hehe, very kind of you Simon. Anyway, there have been three so far, so that's what I'm telling myself.

KeefW (kmw), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 12:15 (twenty years ago)

I had fun. Annie says she misses you, Ned.

Ally C (Ally C), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 15:20 (twenty years ago)

*blush!*

Am in Bruges and it is warm. More later including photos! About to get some dinner. Y'all rock!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 15:32 (twenty years ago)

am jealous

dahlin (dahlin), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 15:33 (twenty years ago)

Is the photo of teh Lansdowne in tonight's Evening Times unrelated to our fun (none of us are in it)?

Last night was much better than Monday in that I woke up this morning without a "fuck, I was awfully drunk last night" feeling. Architecture in Helsinki were wonderfully bonkers and I loved 'em. The first five minutes of "special guests" (are we allowed to say who they were, or does the press embargo still stand?) reminded me why I liked them for about five minutes back in 1995, then the rest of their set reminded me why I got rapidly bored of them shortly afterwards. Nice shirts though.

Dot to Dot were Dot to Dot. Richard's casual bassing and Chris' sheepish expressions were highlights. They sang some songs too, which was nice.

Great to meet AlexT and Stew for the first time, and Stet again whilst sober enough to speak to him. Glad to see we got the hang of the conference-type tables this time round.

And Ned, thank you once again for being the catalyst of all this fun. I hope Belgium, Italy and London treat you appropriately, and that you grace our fair city once more in the future. Can you leave the Californian sunshine here though please? It seems to have gone away with you.

Glasgow, we should try this more.

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 19:14 (twenty years ago)

I spent about ten minutes in the car trying to explain the greatness of Architecture of Helsinki to the mister in the car on the way home.

"They started off like a primary school drama group! They had a spare trombone on stage! They stamped up and down in time to the music like feet-percussion! One bloke was doing that popping your finger out of your mouth !p!o!p! sound as an alternative form of percussion! They had a big tuba type thing that I couldn't see but it sounded like a flumpaphone! One of the girls looked like a twee version of Channel 4 property guru Sarah Beeny! They sounded like nineteen different bands who'd decided to play a gig together but it worked! They had an extra band member hidden behind one of the other guys' beard!" etc etc

He wasn't very impressed.

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 19:22 (twenty years ago)

I forgot about the best thing about last night - the bloke in the 13th Note with the "pirates ARRR cool" tshirt.

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 19:27 (twenty years ago)

Is the photo of teh Lansdowne in tonight's Evening Times unrelated to our fun (none of us are in it)?

haven't seen it, but it'll be unrelated. [begins rant about how newspapers work, or don't. changes mind quickly.]

They had an extra band member hidden behind one of the other guys' beard!

yes. i swear that guy in the blue shirt only cropped up halfway through.

i rather liked them. they were like junior arcade fire meets junior tom waits meets junior band camp. "ramshackle", as alex said, rightly. only in a good way.

Glasgow, we should try this more.

aye!

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 19:28 (twenty years ago)

that was a brilliant description ailsa!

dahlin (dahlin), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 19:30 (twenty years ago)

>Can you leave the Californian sunshine here though please? It seems to have gone away with you.<

He told me yesterday when I was showing him around town that he brought the weather from OC but was taking it away with him.

Ned , did you get the photos I emailed?

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 19:37 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, sorry, grimly, I nicked that line about the beard-dwelling blue-shirted bloke off you. I didn't think you'd notice.

Actually we shouldn't try this more before I get paid unless people let me stay at their houses. Taxis be expensive! (or husbands-converted-to-impromptu-taxi-drivers be grumping!)

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 19:40 (twenty years ago)

Alex, embarrassing though it is I'm still trying to work out who you are, though it seems highly likely I know you... I had a thought of late. Do we occassionally say hello to each other on the street; last time would've been top of Leith walk about 4 months ago?

KeefW (kmw), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 19:50 (twenty years ago)

Ha ha NO! That is some stranger you have been harrassing for years.

Although often at the top of Leith Walk, I'm not sure I've seen you in the flesh for many years. But then I'd forgotten yesterday that I had met Ned before, so my memory may be unreliable. There must be a photo of me on the interweb somewhere, I'll see if I can find one.

alext (alext), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 20:02 (twenty years ago)

keith: the guy you say hello to might be d4v3 mckinl4y, the lovely cheery mod chap who used to come and stay in arden street in summer (he had a vespa in his room). i met him for a pint the other week (first time in seven years) and he mentioned he kept seeing this chap he recognised from potterrow/the egg/etc but couldn't place.

"it'll be keith," i said.

"that's him," he said.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 20:06 (twenty years ago)

Haha...

Is he the guy who DJs at the Egg from time to time, when Paul is on holiday?

KeefW (kmw), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 20:12 (twenty years ago)

Keith, you really are the centre of the Scottish indieverse, aren't you?

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 20:14 (twenty years ago)

ah, yes: that's him. so i assume he isn't your leith walk guy after all.

now you've got me intrigued, dammit.

(x-post)

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 20:14 (twenty years ago)

Simon, no that is the guy! God knows how you managed to guess that... Good stuff. Nice bloke.

Ailsa, have I ever talked over my views on indie music with you :)

KeefW (kmw), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 20:16 (twenty years ago)

Strangely enough, every time I think of you in connection with music, it's Chas'n'Dave, or Dire Straits, or The Knack or something.

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 20:19 (twenty years ago)

Incidentally, can we have a Station Bar FAP sometime?

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 20:20 (twenty years ago)

It's probably rude not to.

KeefW (kmw), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 20:24 (twenty years ago)

Ned , did you get the photos I emailed?

I think not! Could you try resending?

Hope to upload photos here later today. If not, then when I can! Sorry about stealing the weather everyone...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 14 July 2005 08:15 (twenty years ago)

Resent pics to you Ned.

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Thursday, 14 July 2005 09:37 (twenty years ago)

ok, advance warning: scotstvo, ailsa, ned, mädchen and ally: you're all in the pic that will be in teh h3r4ld's "going out" section on thursday. ally and mädchen: you're both pretty recognisable. ailsa: you're not (unless people have an excellent working knowledge of the back of your head). scotstvo: you look like a man with a very guilty reason for trying to hide his face.

all you can really see of ned are the flowing locks. but oh, how they flow!

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 12:53 (twenty years ago)

ooooh fun!

dahlin (dahlin), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 16:16 (twenty years ago)

I don't want to be in a picture. Not even the back of my head. Make it go away.

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 16:53 (twenty years ago)

Wait a minute? You mean they made Madchen and Ned move to a separate table and nick Scotstvo's pint FOR NOTHING?!

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 17:02 (twenty years ago)

Yeah! Where's my pint?

scotstvo (scotstvo), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 17:11 (twenty years ago)

You mean they made Madchen and Ned move to a separate table and nick Scotstvo's pint FOR NOTHING?!

the photographer might have wanted those for his private collection.

Yeah! Where's my pint?

that too.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 17:12 (twenty years ago)

'private collection'
i know all about those...
we had a photographer who nipped off to shoot pretty blonde girls frolicking in fields of rape
he was short and bald and from bolton and i disliked him very much
on his last day of work, he told me about his fiancee's fucked up abusive past and how he popped her cherry. lovely. thanks.
*shudder*

dahlin (dahlin), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 18:35 (twenty years ago)

pssst: madchen was a GANGSTA BITCH in high school!!!
proof: What were you like as a teenager (in high school)?-- a survey

dahlin (dahlin), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 20:45 (twenty years ago)

I am amused by all this.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 12:55 (twenty years ago)

Drinking Stones Ginger Wine isn't really very gangsta.

Mädchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 13:53 (twenty years ago)

yes, but RED BANDANAS and SALT N PEPA are!
i'm so excited by this you know, as i have had secret gangsta aspirations myself

dahlin (dahlin), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 17:49 (twenty years ago)

Oh you badass.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 21 July 2005 07:24 (twenty years ago)

Well it was folded up into a narrow band which was wrapped around my bun, not worn headscarf style (I could never get that to work, yes I did try).

Mädchen (Madchen), Thursday, 21 July 2005 07:28 (twenty years ago)

i can't imagine you with a bun!
i think this might require photographic evidence...

dahlin (dahlin), Thursday, 21 July 2005 08:01 (twenty years ago)

Mädchen, either you were wearing a transparent skirt in the Landsdowne, or the Herald has invested in x-ray cameras.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 21 July 2005 08:24 (twenty years ago)

I didn't notice that!

It's quite an achievement to photograph 5 ilxors and only show one and a half faces.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Thursday, 21 July 2005 08:29 (twenty years ago)

hey, we only employ the best.

and me.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 21 July 2005 08:30 (twenty years ago)

shite... i won't be seeing the herald today! scan, anyone?

dahlin (dahlin), Thursday, 21 July 2005 09:55 (twenty years ago)

it's not worth it. unless you like the backs of people's heads, and want to know what ally and mädchen would look like if they were 2cm high.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 21 July 2005 09:57 (twenty years ago)

:(

dahlin (dahlin), Thursday, 21 July 2005 10:03 (twenty years ago)

(sorry about the quality)

Onimo (GerryNemo), Thursday, 21 July 2005 10:18 (twenty years ago)

That pub looks all right, but I think I've been put off going by the look of the clientele in that photo...

alext (alext), Thursday, 21 July 2005 12:06 (twenty years ago)

thanks bub

dahlin (dahlin), Thursday, 21 July 2005 12:13 (twenty years ago)

I have a weird bubblebum thing going on there, don't I?

I do like the fluff of my hair there.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 22 July 2005 15:14 (twenty years ago)

bubblebum!

RJG (RJG), Friday, 22 July 2005 15:22 (twenty years ago)

Well yes. It would be wrong otherwise.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 22 July 2005 15:24 (twenty years ago)

OK so the server won't let me at try glasgow more so I'll post this here instead, a one-time only

M&S are tomorrow doing some weird promotion where if the cashier does not mention to you our &more credit card you can claim a free bottle of wine; I have been informed that one of the glasgow stores will be taking part in this faintly ridiculous scheme

so - I expect the M&S cashiers will be being v.vigilant in re: this policy tomorrow because it's more thn their job's worth (i.e. they're supposed to push this card every day, every transaction) but I'm sure a few bottles of wine will slip through - maybe it could be you

they will be wearing badges at the foods tills ("if I haven't mentioned our &more card by the end of this transaction you can claim a free bottle of wine") so that's how you'll know the store (argyle Vs. sauchie) is taking pt. (I think the simply food store, not g. central, is taking pt. too)

anyway, I don't know if it is worth making a specific trip out (i.e. it isn't) but if you are passing or at lunch - it's gunna be awkward not to mention annoying to mention this frkn card on transactions less than 4-5 items, so go buy a sandwich (note: don't pay at the express/ 5-items tills cs the offer doesn't apply there, loopholes loopholes) and see if you can bag a free bottle of wine

I would probably get sacked if my bosses knew about me talking about this

I am finding finding a flat a bothersome nuisance

czn (johnson), Friday, 22 July 2005 20:36 (twenty years ago)

I am now a fully naturalised M&S worker

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 22 July 2005 20:40 (twenty years ago)

congrats. was it difficult? what does naturalisation involve? was there a ceremony? or did they just pin something on your chest?

dahlin (dahlin), Sunday, 24 July 2005 21:59 (twenty years ago)

Ned said he was coming back with photos :(

Mädchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 12:02 (twenty years ago)

Ned did say he would post more photos. I took a few of him in Glasgow and he took a few pics for his mum and I emailed them to him. So no doubt when he has time he may share them. Same with the ones he took at the FAP.

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 14:43 (twenty years ago)

There ARE more photos etc. There is also this thing called 'limited access to Internet' at present. Give me time. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 17:09 (twenty years ago)

TS: looking at pr0n v posting amusing photos. nah, no contest :)

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 17:14 (twenty years ago)

dahlin (dahlin), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 17:49 (twenty years ago)

Shit, forgot to phone the insurance company again.

Mädchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 17:51 (twenty years ago)

I finally coaxed some pictures off my corrupted card. Not many, and because life works that way, they're mostly grimly fiendish. Still: Here they are.

stet (stet), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 21:51 (twenty years ago)

I like how I am pretending to be interested in grimly's story, then turn round to snigger to madchen behind his back when he's not looking.

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 22:00 (twenty years ago)

it could have been much worse

did I ever post the couple of photos I took?

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 22:14 (twenty years ago)

i am not amused
no rjg you have not

dahlin (dahlin), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 22:19 (twenty years ago)

Murky. Like my soul.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 22:53 (twenty years ago)

ooh there are people there i don;t know! well, one. boy

dahlin (dahlin), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 22:54 (twenty years ago)

(he's starfire dave's mate)

I like how everyone in that top photo of RJG's is REALLY fascinated by Scotstvo's cigarette.

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 23:37 (twenty years ago)

I like how I am pretending to be interested in grimly's story, then turn round to snigger to madchen behind his back when he's not looking.

while i look really smug. "ooh, she enjoyed that story. i'm such a raconteur," i'm thinking. bah.

forgive my ignorance: but what's going on in picture 104?

and teh rampant bouze-lust in 129 is frankly worrying. we should be ashamed of ourselves.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 08:39 (twenty years ago)

forgive my ignorance: but what's going on in picture 104?

I don't know, but madchen is not much impressed by it.

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 13:20 (twenty years ago)

0094 should be used for all future Ned photoshoppage. RJG, I like that one of me and Cathy so much it is going on my screensaver.

Mädchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 13:39 (twenty years ago)

i fear the photoshop potential in picture 131. i might do it myself before stet has a go.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 13:41 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, 0094 trips me out. I must have been flirting with Cozen.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 13:41 (twenty years ago)

I was going to chuck a hissy fit and ask for the ones of me to be taken down, but (1) they are blurry, (2) I don't look as freaky as I did in Ned's photo and (3) they are really funny.

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 13:44 (twenty years ago)

See, I was wondering why you had said nothing, and I was going to complain of being unfairly singled out.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 13:47 (twenty years ago)

ned, when you and i are in our sixties we need to spend all our time just sitting next to each other in a bar, pulling silly faces at people as they come in the door. on this evidence, we were born to do it.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 13:52 (twenty years ago)

Damn straight. We are the Statler and Waldorf of later years.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 14:07 (twenty years ago)
