This is the only movie of the year that I want to see opening night. Christopher Walken, Lucy Liu, Keira Knightley and Tony Scott's cracked-out editing.

No irony here, I thought Man On Fire was the best action movie of last year.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Thursday, 9 June 2005 19:54 (twenty years ago)

Bleurgh, looks like shit, and I liked Man on Fire. But I just hate Keira Knightley too much.

Tony Scott gives me hives.

mike h. OTM. Hotter than Katie Holmes in heavy eyeliner.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Thursday, 9 June 2005 20:30 (twenty years ago)

I wrote off Scott, too, until I watched Man On Fire and just revelled in the pure excess.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Thursday, 9 June 2005 20:31 (twenty years ago)

Haha Man on Fire was terrible.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 9 June 2005 20:38 (twenty years ago)

Tony Scott is a malignant tumor.

carl th. dreyer's domino

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Thursday, 9 June 2005 21:29 (twenty years ago)

three weeks pass...
The film Domino - scheduled for release this August but now likely to be put back while Tony Scott, its director, adds a new, tragic ending to it - is likely to further confound the world’s understanding of its subject, Domino Harvey.

Before she was found dead in the bath at her West Hollywood home, Harvey had made clear her hatred of the film, starring Keira Knightley. Proudly lesbian, Harvey disliked what she saw as soft-porn titillation in the film and she regretted selling the rights to her life story for just £26,000.

r.i.p. domino harvey

fe zaffe (fezaffe), Thursday, 30 June 2005 21:16 (twenty years ago)

Surely Hollywood wouldn't be heartless enough to include her overdose/suicide/whatever in the film?

DABNEY COLEMAN

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 15:44 (twenty years ago)

I think my growing acceptance of goofy and/or ultrapop music (see: Crazy Frog) has pushed all the rockism into the film-enthusiast portion of my brain and now I want to bludgeon Tony Scott with a shovel for this. (A shovel, of course, being comparatively mild a blunt object compared to the tent pole with a cinder block attached which I have scrawled the word "McG" on with red sharpie. But still. Fuck you, Tony Scott.) I just saw the classic late '60s Japanese Yakuza hitman/New Wave mindfuck Branded to Kill so any attempts to get me to see this celluloid gonorrhea are going to be met with repeated index-finger-knuckle-to-the-eye-socket jabs. On myself, maybe, if not to the person trying to coerce me to see it.

And now I've got that fucking Van Morrison song stuck in my head.

Yes, that would've been pretty good too.

Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 00:19 (twenty years ago)

then he could have had a whole string of fantastic one-liners:

"you're toast"
"do you feel the burn?"
"is it getting hot in here or is it just you?"
"you're fire"
"smoking kills"
"that's what i call a heated conversation"

This was kind of crazy, but not as crazy as Man On Fire (no rectal bombs, for one thing) - I like how the scenario leading up the dude's arm coming off is never spoken of again, no biggie at all.

Really could have been shorter - the Choco/Mickey scene in the hotel room was so unnecessary. Yeah, we get it, Choco's in love, some weird family/menage shit going down, etc.. Cut 20-30 minutes out and it's a much better and more enjoyable movie, I think.

Are You Nomar? (miloaukerman), Sunday, 16 October 2005 22:45 (twenty years ago)

It wasn't even cut that fast! There was nothing in this film as illegible as the fight scenes in Batman Begins, nothing as crazy as cutting in Ben Hur over Al Pacino's speech in Any Given Sunday and it looked positively normal compared to, say, Natural Born Killers. The only thing that came close was the mescaline scene, and that's a time-honored tradition of filmmaker-druggie BS.

i watched a few bits from this in the library the other day. crazy cuisinart editing patterns. like oliver stone, sometimes it's so off-the-wall hectic that it becomes interesting. also a pretty pronounced stylized color palette. i'm not saying it's good or it's bad, but i'm curious to see the rest.

amateurist0, Saturday, 18 March 2006 17:41 (twenty years ago)

I kinda think the ultimate difference between Ridley and Tony is that the former has a concept of 'taste' that the latter eschews. This is not meant to criticize either.

Charlie Brown (kenan), Thursday, 18 January 2007 15:50 (nineteen years ago)

What a weird thing to just be wandering about the office, asking.

AllyzayEisenschefterBDawkinsFlyingSquirrelRomoCrying.jpg (allyzay), Thursday, 18 January 2007 16:19 (nineteen years ago)

It was like the longest trailer ever for some other movie that someone should have made instead.

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 18 January 2007 16:21 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, OTM, that is how I felt about it. Was that green-yellow light/filter specifically applied to make Lucy Liu and Keira Knightley look like hags btw because otherwise that shit needed to go ASAP.

AllyzayEisenschefterBDawkinsFlyingSquirrelRomoCrying.jpg (allyzay), Thursday, 18 January 2007 16:23 (nineteen years ago)

Lucy Liu in this vs. Lucy Liu in Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever vs. Lucy Liu in Code Name: The Cleaner vs...

Yeah, what the fuck. Casting eye candy and doing your best to make it unattractive is fine if you're making Monster, but not an action movie. Especially not an action movie that thinks it's a lighthearted romp but comes across like cinematic glitch-hop.

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 18 January 2007 16:26 (nineteen years ago)

The worst thing about this movie is that every complaint about it makes it sound awesome.

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 18 January 2007 16:27 (nineteen years ago)

i was gonna say, 'cinematic glitch-hop -- ja bitte'

the original hauntology blogging crew (Enrique), Thursday, 18 January 2007 16:27 (nineteen years ago)

that's exactly what i've been thinking! b/c i still haven't seen this and hold out hope for it at least being action-y

I dunno. I haven't seen it, but I can't stand even the trailer. It looks overstyled to the point of being near-fetishistic, and formless. The kind of movie you're supposed to look at instead of watch.

Charlie Brown (kenan), Thursday, 18 January 2007 16:32 (nineteen years ago)

how come no one but ilx ever talks abt this movie i mean it sucks right i have not seen it

jhoshea (scoopsnoodle), Thursday, 18 January 2007 16:32 (nineteen years ago)

The kind of movie you're supposed to look at mainline instead of watch.

Fixed.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 18 January 2007 16:33 (nineteen years ago)

OK awesome things about this movie:
1. Christopher Walken
2. The scene where Keira Knightley punches 90210 in the face
3. for the most part, the casting
4. the main story arc is interesting

OK bad things about this movie:
1. Tony Scott et al has done everything possible to hide and flash up the story arc for no apparent reason
2. The entire first hour being nearly unwatchable

OK really, really atrocious things that tip the balance to just flat out "bad movie":
1. THE SOUNDTRACK, WHICH IS OMNIPRESENT, AWFUL, AND UNBEARABLE TO THE POINT OF RUINING SCENES COMPLETELY
2. the drugged out scene--fuck off, OOOER you're moving the camera all wonky like, now Keira Knightley's got her clothes off--this is different from the rest of the movie how? Oh right, because Tom Waites shows up for NO REASON WHATSOEVER. OK.
3. the fact that she keeps saying "My name is Domino Harvey. And I. Am. A. Bountyhunter." One time is one thing but to have that keep showing up throughout the film? It's not very good as a meme.
4. I almost busted out laughing at the nooooooooooooooo u killed my bitches nooooooooooooo gun fight at the almost very end.

It is completely overstyled to the point of wanting to shake whoever greenlighted the whole thing, shouting, "No one ever actually watches 3 hours straight of McFly and Hype Williams videos, please don't do this." And it's annoying because this could've been really good!

AllyzayEisenschefterBDawkinsFlyingSquirrelRomoCrying.jpg (allyzay), Thursday, 18 January 2007 16:33 (nineteen years ago)

I had trouble even watching it. It would have been easier in the theater where I'd have no choice, but I'm not sure that's a selling point. I rented it when it hit DVD, thinking maybe I'd been unfair because I'd downloaded a screener and watched it on the laptop, but no, same problem. So much of it has an interstitial feel, like they're just doing a cutesy little thing that isn't working, and any minute now they'll go back to Showing You A Movie, but any minute never comes.

Ally is right about everything, except I don't think I'll give them much credit for Good#4, and I would have been okay with Gratuitous Tom Waits if the rest of the movie had been different.

Kids From 90s Trendy TV Show Playing Themselves And Being A Little Self-Effacing About It And Then Getting Punched is such a great thing that it pisses me off that this movie did it instead of some other movie.

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 18 January 2007 16:39 (nineteen years ago)

Oh another bad thing about this movie is Mena Suvari popping up every once and a while. NO. GO AWAY.

AllyzayEisenschefterBDawkinsFlyingSquirrelRomoCrying.jpg (allyzay), Thursday, 18 January 2007 16:42 (nineteen years ago)

I still go with what I said upthread.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Thursday, 18 January 2007 18:20 (nineteen years ago)

My brother is studying filmmaking and he looovvees Tony Scott. I absolutely don't get it.

I rented this movie and thought it was terrible. Then my bro gave it too me as a present! I still love him though...

Matt Olken (Moodles), Thursday, 18 January 2007 19:08 (nineteen years ago)

this movie seemed like a very long superbowl ad. i thought maybe it was selling keira knightley but then at the end there was no 800-number to call.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Friday, 19 January 2007 16:20 (nineteen years ago)

I hear everything you guys are saying but this movie was still awesome.

Ha, I bought this cheap on DVD during the Tower close out. Still love the green/yellow color saturation.
