How would you characterize the various regional hubs of ILX?

Do you think that some of the larger geographical centers of ILX activity have distinct personalities?

I was just thinking about how when I first went to a FAP in early 2003, Chicago ILXors had this reputation for being super-intellectual, because it was like Nabisco and Amateurist and Sterling. And now I think, now that there's been some turnover and new folks on the scene, we have a reputation for being twee!

But what about London? NYC? San Francisco? LA? Melbourne? Glasgow? Do you ever think of posters from each city as being of a particular collective type?

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 16 June 2005 16:17 (twenty years ago)

LA = we bake in the sun and say 'yeah, dude' a lot (this is not strictly true)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 16 June 2005 16:26 (twenty years ago)

I find myself vaguely intimidated by the San Franciscans.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 16 June 2005 16:28 (twenty years ago)

THAT'S RIGHT BITCH! ON YR KNEES

[that bastard] jaxon (jaxon), Thursday, 16 June 2005 16:29 (twenty years ago)

Hahaha I think SFers have a reputation for not showing up to FAPs and flaking like crazy.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 16 June 2005 16:29 (twenty years ago)

dude don't harsh his mellow, bra.

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 16 June 2005 16:29 (twenty years ago)

...the CO/MN massive seems low-key, to me. Although, chances are very good that I'll be moving to Chi, soon, so maybe I'll have to break out those old Belle and Sebastien albums, huh?

giboyeux (skowly), Thursday, 16 June 2005 16:30 (twenty years ago)

we have a reputation for being twee!

I think we have a reputation for being kinda schlubby. And rightfully so. Chicago is definitely a schlubby kinda town. Loveable, too.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Thursday, 16 June 2005 16:30 (twenty years ago)

But one day we all woke up early and rode our bikes through a park!

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 16 June 2005 16:31 (twenty years ago)

I think everyone on ILX has a reputation for being kinda schlubby, frankly.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 16 June 2005 16:32 (twenty years ago)

there's a CO/MN massive!?

the chicago & glasgow ilxors are muh peeps

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Thursday, 16 June 2005 16:34 (twenty years ago)

schlubby?! pfft I am a svelte motherfucker, if I do say so myself...

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 16 June 2005 16:35 (twenty years ago)

exactly.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 16 June 2005 16:41 (twenty years ago)

The new York crew is the most intimidating one; Chicago and London are the least intimidating. Then there's Dunedin, but that's such an old-skool ILX thing that I honestly can't comment on it much, it'd make for a great sitcom tho, that much I know.

I never realised that there *was* an LA or SF crew - like, I know about ILXors living on the West Coast, but somehow they seem to have less in-jokes/bickering/collective identity than the other city's guys.

giboyeux, look up subgenius and John Justen on ILM, they went to HHS too ('91 REPRAZENT).

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 16 June 2005 16:44 (twenty years ago)

They're all just alien colonies to me. I have worked out which ones are the slitheens.

Leon C. (Ex Leon), Thursday, 16 June 2005 16:44 (twenty years ago)

I think that the Chicago people are nice and friendly. They *seem* like Chicago.

I would like to meet all of the glasgow people very much, when I consider the "hubs" of people that I have not met.

I have met many LA ILXers, but not often together, and thus I consider them very disparate and undefined (GREAT individuals, though!).

I have been to one London FAP.

the D Double signal (nordicskilla), Thursday, 16 June 2005 16:44 (twenty years ago)

Well, there's plenty of anecdotes about NYCers hanging out with each other, and for some time it actually felt like *the* biggest focal point of ILX, period (before that it wuz London.) I suppose it is a bit split-up, tho.

There's a tiny Dutch contigent on ILM, right?

o. nate (onate), Thursday, 16 June 2005 18:00 (twenty years ago)

The Chicago crew managed to gather up into something regular right when I left -- I'm totally still jealous. From what I hear, it seems like Chicago in general got slightly more hopping right as soon as I drove the U-Haul past Gary.

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 16 June 2005 18:06 (twenty years ago)

That's because we had a massive influx from Virginia, Texas, and North Carolina. I swear, it was like the Great Migration all over again.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 16 June 2005 18:07 (twenty years ago)

I know! And I assume their being new in town worked as good motivation to get a social routine started.

The New York crew is less intimidating and more just weird. And I like that the London group seems much more like a massive friend-group -- as if they all lived in the same dorm at university -- than like a collection of individuals with some common internet interest.

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 16 June 2005 18:09 (twenty years ago)

k/l (Ken L), Thursday, 16 June 2005 18:16 (twenty years ago)

and I like that the London group seems much more like a massive friend-group -- as if they all lived in the same dorm at university

Well, to be fair some of them actually did. I think we go out drinking together far more than the others (like an average of about once a week over the last couple of years). The only other hubs that seems to have the same sort of easy chemistry between everyone are Glasgow and Dunedin, although that's kind of a special case.

I imagine NYCers as tearing lumps out of one another one minute and doing karaoke and falling over tables giggling the next.

SF is kinda my favourite after London, I think.

I'm in LA, a newbie (2 months) to ILX and what keeps me coming back is the wit and intellect of the ILX community at large. This includes all regions of the world. I don't notice much regionalization in mind set, except some of the slang used (like twee & FAP) and generally all posters are polite and will explain anything if you ask. The ILX board definitely won’t sustain the interest of people who are clueless (saying this makes me feel like a snob) but the group also won’t tolerate cluelessness in its posters either. I think that you’re a pretty bright group wherever you are and I enjoy the banter and have learned many things of interest and some really weird stuff I didn’t know interested me to begin with!

Yeah, it's a sickness. The Northern CA people refer to their freeways all businesslike with simple numerical designations (101, 280, 880). In Southern CA we elevate these mere numbers to TITLES (The 5, The 101, The PCH, etc.).

If by Northern CA, you mean the rest of the world, then yeah.

I met K4r3n maybe once and can't really remember much about her. I love that one of the most salient things 4ll3gra remembers about me (at least until we touched base again post-Friendstering each other) was when I made her get up at 7 in the morning to watch the Oscar nominations. She probably also remembers how aghast and unimpressed I was with that best picture nomination for Full Monty. We argued over breakfast. It was great.

Vichitravirya XI, Thursday, 16 June 2005 22:40 (twenty years ago)

the new york contingent exist to me in a no-longer-there (if it ever was) gritty/shiny movie version of nyc, and carry themselves accordingly. london seems really smart – i'd like to go there but i'd wind up using slang that didn't fit my mouth properly, and i'd have to get a boring dayjob probably. i imagine everyone there being able to drink me under the table while having erudite conversations about pop and stuff. actually maybe i don't want to go there. dunedin remains a magic wonderland full of nice people i've never so much as said hello to. they rate everything! the other places are all made up, as far as i'm concerned, except sf which is always windier and chillier than i expect it to be, so whoever lives there must be either a nonstop k-way wearing motherfucker or one of those people who can wear shorts all year round without catching a chill. weirdos.

jones (actual), Thursday, 16 June 2005 22:44 (twenty years ago)

I'm pretty anti-social basically, not really into drinking, or smoke, or groups of lots of people talking at once. I'm not a good, fun person. I also don't show up for union meetings and events, and Sara's (x-?) landlord/housemate could vouch for that. Maybe some day I will show up and see if the FAP looks approachable.

Those of us here in TX are very disjointed, un-united. Which is absolutely no surprise whatsoever, because our state is so massive it might as well be four or five different states. Actually, there are at least four or five varying regions of the state and none of them are like the other, so it's no wonder we're all so... lacking in unity.

I really wish I could find the time to meet up with Sam, though. Seeing as though she only lives about 90 miles away from me and her new home of Austin is in the part of the same Texas my home is in. One day, one day.
