Can I hide my male pattern baldness by clipping my hair really short with clippers?

I cannot shave my head because of this:

When going bald, the only option is to shave & get a bit of stubble.

I can’t believe I haven’t been bothered about going bald; others I know are absolutely gutted about it.
The only thing I thought was that I’d never cop off again, but I have, so everyone’s happy.

It’s not like you’re the only bald head in the world.

Maybe this is a subject on which me and Jon can bond.

You can't hide it by cutting it close - it advertises it, really - but you give the impression of "yup, bald, don't care" which chix find hott. Honestly. And you avoid the "he's just got his hair that way to hide his baldness" comments.

is it wrong that I hope stem-cell research will cure male pattern baldness along with, you know, important things like cancer and birth defects. Luckily, it seems my hair quit receding after the temples faded away a few years ago. But god knows it could resume at any time. I've got a strangely-shaped, somewhat oversized melon, ie a shaved head would look utter shit on me :(

Will(iam), Friday, 17 June 2005 15:44 (twenty years ago)

Clipping hair super-short and/or shaving it entirely doesn't and shouldn't "hide" male pattern baldness -- it just makes it not matter. People can still tell you're balding; they just don't happen to care; it's not like you have hair anyway! Compare:

Umm, dude, a lot of these "counterexamples" are of men who either aren't particularly bald or are doing exactly the same cutting-it-shorter thing I'm talking about!

I mean, I'm fine with balding people who just let the rest of the hair go long, but if someone's in a position where they don't like the look of it enough that they're thinking about "hiding" it, then cutting super-short is an elegant way of making it a non-issue.

xxpost: those guy are all bald enough and my point is the shaved-head orthodoxy gets kind of tiresome.

The Sensational Sulk (sexyDancer), Friday, 17 June 2005 17:17 (twenty years ago)

The number of combovers and "but look I can still grow it on the sides" haircuts in this country tells me that there is no such thing as a "shaved-head orthodoxy." (Plus for the record I am against the actual shaving of heads, based on a number of skin-care concerns.) All I’m sayin: if a dude sees looking bald as a problem, he can cut his hair shorter. Doesn’t even matter how much shorter—point is just to educe the contrast. And if a dude doesn’t see looking bald as a problem, then, you know, whatever: I’ve got no problem with the halo or the Gallagher, and if you’re only down to the widow’s peak, that can look even better than having the full head.

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 17 June 2005 17:38 (twenty years ago)

as i finally managed to get away from him, his parting shot was: "hoy! cunt. you're going bald."

Middle-management at High Times?

(Jordan, yeah, I just have clippers and take it all the way down, which is pretty much visually equivalent to shaving except [a] better for the skin, [b] less unusual-looking, [c] more pleasant to the touch, and [d] cheaper and easier. Then I forget about it for two or three weeks, and it grows back into short hair, and then I cut it again -- so basically the shape/style never changes, but there's a cycle between the shape of my skull in natural skin-color and the shape of my skull in hair-color.)

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 17 June 2005 18:02 (twenty years ago)

What do you mean by trim, Jon? With scissors? Or do you just want to get rid of the new growth? I cut my hair (1.5mm long or so) every 10-14 days, though ideally I'd like to do it weekly. It's a bit too much hassle, though, so I don't.

Your clippers will still be sharp - keep oiling them every cut and you should be fine. It's still a hassle though (and if you burn your scalp to literally a crisp - I've been peeling off rizla-size strips of skin since yesterday - then you have to give it a while to recover).

yeah i'm not partic worried about it - been on the cards for a while, tbh i've kept my hair for longer than i thought i would, it stalled for a bit in my mid 20s!

Hiding it is not really possible, and it's a bit pointless as you're going to be found out eventually. All you can do is make the best of it. It isn't that important anyway but, being a vain bastard, I do miss being able to vary my hairstyle.

you could buy a selection of wigs.

mine went really early – thin on top by early 20s - & it's always been nbd – I think it hits slightly older sales/business/publicly-visible types harder, their identity gets tied up with their hair.

Least bother is a cordless clipper, go over once a week before a shower. It won't hide it, but it keeps you in line with the accepted solution.

I've never tried wet-shaving it – I think it would be an interesting solution (might be a bit much on my huge round pale head) but I'm clumsy and ill-disciplined and probably wouldn't keep it up properly.

of course!

I've only been doing that for the past few years, I wish I'd done it earlier. Tbh It was almost an erotic experience the first time I did it but, sadly, the thrill has gone!

Once a week, I do the trimmer with no attachment (I presume it's a zero) on my head (like woof said). I know this time of year is the wrong time, but getting some sun on your head and a bit of colour looks a lot better than just white and pale.

Yeah, I'm fortunate to have a head well-suited to shaving. The paleness goes away after a week or so. It does require upkeep every few data or so. If I go a week without shaving, I have to spend like half an hour hacking it all back down again.

Once a month dry clippers

Brother does wet shave, suits him. Tried it once had a huge big childabusing head on me.

nb not in any way invested in my appearance, have been receding since school and thinning on top before mid 20s. The clippers is just the most functional cheap haircut method for me ymmv

if it's any consolation, I think bald men are super hot.

I bought a wig the other day, haven't worn it outside the house.

It looks OK with a headband, it looks pretty crap otherwise.
