Delaware vs. Rhode Island

Small, one major city in each (apparently), still have two senators each, surely both full of secrets. If they were to declare war on each other, who would win? (It is presumed that the Noize dudes would fight with their amps but it is not clear if they would want to destroy RI in order to save it.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 13:04 (twenty years ago)

There is a larger mob presence in Rhode Island, ergo they would win.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 13:07 (twenty years ago)

Yeah but aren't all the banks in the world secretly based in Delaware? They must have robot zombie armies tucked away in the south of the state with the drug runners.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 13:07 (twenty years ago)

No, it's all CORPORATIONS, not just banks who are headquartered in Delaware.

MIS Information (kate), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 13:09 (twenty years ago)

Then they must have even MORE robot zombie armies!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 13:09 (twenty years ago)

Newark vs. Newport
Dover vs. Cranston

They mayor of Providence had the chief of police kidnap and beat his ex-wife's boyfriend. I think they're a little more hardcore.

Yup, no corporate income tax there.

From what I can tell, probably so.

Cianci was re-elected mayor after receiving probation on the kidnapping charge. He was then convicted of racketeering and sent to jail.

Friend of mine is from Providence: They LOVE him. Also, people from Delaware aren't exactly excited to tell you they're from Delaware, whereas all the people I've met from Providence are pretty quick to tell you that it's basically the best city in America.

fuck, yes! they removed the gun! thats terrible!

charltonlido (gareth), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 13:47 (twenty years ago)

Cianci's wanted to remake the public image of Providence as "The Renaissance City," which nicely dovetailed into the Italian community's Old-World pride and his own Machiavellian style of executive politics.

If it wasn't for Cianci, Providence would just be another dried-up industrial wasteland -- like every major city in Connecticut, for example.

Go Providence.

elmo (allocryptic), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 13:56 (twenty years ago)

ive been through both of these states (in delawares case, many times), yet have never really stopped

charltonlido (gareth), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 13:57 (twenty years ago)

Apparently Cianci and Brown University didn't get along very well. I heard some amusing anecdotes about city-hired tow trucks divebombing the Brown campus and towing 75% of the cars parked in the neighborhood, regardless of whether they were illegally parked or not.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 13:58 (twenty years ago)

It seems pretty obvious to me that R.I. wins, if only for Providence and Newport. Wait, isn't Mystic Seaport in R.I. as well? What the fuck is in Delaware???

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 13:59 (twenty years ago)

Well, I have cousins who live in Delaware. Other than that...

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 14:00 (twenty years ago)

Even the corporations that are "based" in Delaware aren't really in Delaware.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 14:02 (twenty years ago)

Mystic Seaport is in Mystic, Connecticut. Maybe 40 minutes over the RI border? Although most of Rhode Island can be reached in a 40 minute drive from anywhere else in Rhode Island, it's not that far, really.

elmo (allocryptic), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 14:03 (twenty years ago)

Hell, I'll still say Rhode Island, even though they've got a Republican governor and despite Cianci's dealings.

Is George Thorogood the only Delaware musician of consequence?

Tom Verlaine and Richard Hell, I think (both of whom crush David Byrne). So one point for Delaware.

Rhode Island, however, was founded by my favorite Calvinist theologian, Roger Williams. I don't know Delaware's contribution to Calvinist theology, but I suspect no one would match Williams.

So, even so far.

Isn't Jon Spencer from R.I.? Don't know if that will tip the balance, though I was a Pussy Galore fan back in the day.

wow. sorry about that. unusual show of home pride.
we've got the italian mob, the irish rumblers, the freakin' puerto ricans, the scary ladies with big hair and long nails... not to mention our life-sustaining hot weiners, clam cakes, dell's lemonade and coffee milk... and FAMILY GUY and... our very own vocabulary allowing us to communicate in code, an added bonus when coordinating attacks. we've also got the Navy at our fingertips and a kick-ass coastline and veritable armada of leisurecraft, ready and willing to defend.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 15:24 (twenty years ago)

A classic episode of Super Chicken begins with two pilots in the cockpit; the pilot says "We should be ready to land in Providence now." The co-pilot looks out the window and says, "But, there's nothing there!" The pilot says, "That's Providence all right," and puts the plane down into what turns out to be the ocean. Then we jump to a few weeks later, when Super Chicken, driving his jalopy in Connecticut on the way to the Newport Jazz festival, where he is to play his horn, arrives at the Rhode Island border to discover ocean where the state had been. The state had been missing for some time - kidnapped for ransom by the bad guys - though up to this point no one had noticed.

(This doesn't necessarily reflect my own opinion of Rhode Island, where I saw the New York Dolls twice in 1973.)

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 15:28 (twenty years ago)

To my tin ears, people from Rhode Island talk like they're deaf.

I don't know much about Delaware, but I do know that I've never been charged a toll to drive through Rhode Island.

And as small as it is, Rhode Island looks like it belongs there. Seeing Delaware on a map bothers me as much as seeing Portugal on a Spanish map. Why not just call it Nor'east Maryland?

Rhode Island implies that the whole state's an island (like the island it was named for) and so it should be called East Connecticut. This would make them squirm, so it'd be fun to watch the reaction.

Rhode Island:
* a lot of weird fucking bands (Good)
* Providence is/was a pretty town, even if smallish (Good)
* Rhode Island is not really an island even though it's small (Neutral)

Delaware:
* The First State (Ho-hum, so much to answer for)
* a criminally low speed limit, just to catch unsuspecting speeders on I-95 (Bad)
* no sales tax (Good -- well, if you live near there -- also, I'm not sure what RI's sales tax is)
* One time in lower Manhattan, a clown van of huge scary cracked-out drag queens hurdled out as I was walking by it, and the license plate was from Delaware. They proceeded to cause havoc at a convenience store I was at after leaving APT the night I was there (when phil-two was choked by that NJ goomba dude). They started yelling and banging loudly on the store counter, with the convenience store guy looking like he was about to pull out a gun. He smiled at me, said "THANK YOU VERY MUCH" with a "NOW LEAVE BECAUSE THIS IS GONNA GET UGLY" wink. (EXTREMELY FUCKING BAD-ASS GOOD)

Also, once, the drummer from Zen Guerrilla jumped off his drum kit and fell on me and sprained my ankle badly but I was so drunk I didn't notice until I tried to get up the next morning and fell right to the floor, and I got a concussion smashing my head into a keg at a Mother Nature's Blacklight Rainbow show in somebody's basement and those are my Delaware punk rock cred injuries.

Things that PA and MD have that DE don't: sales tax, rule against perpetuities.

Things Delaware has that PA and MD don't: enticing incorporation laws, self-settled asset protection trusts

I read U.S.C.A. too

Rhode Island is where I had my first Subway sandwich, in 1989.

Delaware is where I arrived after driving all night from Cleveland for no good reason except I needed a place to sleep, and I collapsed under the boardwalk at Rehoboth Beach. Delaware is also where two New Zealand housepainters and my girlfriend's parents got me so drunk on some bright-green cocktail called like Viva La Mexico that I puked.

I think you know the winner.

(* NJ also abolished the rule against perpetuities -- boo yah!)

Rehoboth is very gay.

So unless Rhode Island has an equivalent to the nation's gay summer capital... Delaware totally wins.

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Saturday, 20 May 2006 05:22 (nineteen years ago)

RI sounds nice - I like the coast, decent weather, funny accents all around. The 'which city should you live in' quiz always puts in Providence by a large margin, but I'm afraid of getting beaten up by RISD hooligans.

milo z (mlp), Saturday, 20 May 2006 05:28 (nineteen years ago)

you know what they say about paper v. reality?

Rehoboth is "the nation's gay summer capital"?

Providence->Provincetown = 1/2 hr more than Wilmington->Rehoboth

gabbneb (gabbneb), Saturday, 20 May 2006 09:45 (nineteen years ago)

Rehoboth is "the nation's gay summer capital"?

if there are actually people who call it that, perhaps it is because they live in "the nation's capital"?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Saturday, 20 May 2006 09:50 (nineteen years ago)

Results 1 - 5 of about 8 for "the nation's gay summer capital"
Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, calls itself the "Nation's Gay Summer Capital."

People above generally got it right about the music: I think it's Tom Verlaine and Billy Fica were both from Wilmington. They met Richard Hell at a boarding school. That's what I've heard. Also Boy Sets Fire, Jets to Brazil, Young Guru (Jay-Z Roc-A-Fella engineer), Zen Guerilla, George Thorogood, Tom Petty (went to my high school) and Jade Tree (hence lots of Hardcore). Also Ken Burns and Ryan Phillipe.

hey Safty First,

I am FROM DELAWARE. I went to UNIVERSITY OF DELAWARE. I grew up in Newark. I always thought the motto should be "Philly's Dirty South."

Rehoboth is gay, I go to the Delaware State Sea Shore.

So I'm at my mom's in Groton, CT. I'm thinking of driving up to Providence today and tomorrow. Anybody have anthing to add to this thread? Is Armageddon still the big record store? What's the best neighborhood to just wander around in? My sister works at the RISD art museum. What's there to do in that area?

Also, what's the cheap, happening neighborhood in Providence? What's Pawtucket like? Thank you, ILX.

Arthurrr (Arthur), Monday, 12 June 2006 13:50 (nineteen years ago)

Armageddon is maybe the only game in town as far as good record stores go. No more record stores on the east side at all, i think. except maybe that one near wickenden. when you're at the RISD museum go to geoff's superlative sandwiches.

lord pooperton (ex machina), Monday, 12 June 2006 17:42 (nineteen years ago)

One day in 1997 a few of my high school friends and I decided to bunk class and go to an afternoon Pawtucket Red Sox game. On the way we were stuck in traffic beside a crazed Vietnam vet in a camo-painted minivan who kept making faces at my ... easily riled ... friend. Said friend felt it appropriate to make faces back and chant the Black Mass (I might be exaggerating this part) out the window to Vietnam Vet. Since the automotively incompetent, Very Christian Girlfriend of Riled-up Friend was driving our vehicle, it became of sudden concern when the Vietnam Vet decided to run us off the road. For the better part of 2 miles we wound through Pawtucket playing chicken with an insane duffer and a wretched driver. Easily Riled Friend had the sliding door of the minivan open; yelled epitaphs out the gap, and angered the Vet to a seriously scary degree. We only escaped when we convinced Very Christian Girlfriend to run a series of red lights and drive four wheels up on the curb, which was -- we found out -- "the worst thing she'd ever done." Ergo, Pawtucket sucks.

Damn, Atreyu! (x Jeremy), Monday, 12 June 2006 17:51 (nineteen years ago)

I think the worst thing she ever did was that fucking website. Possibly defending Singapore or child labor...

Listen to this radio interview between WPRO's John DePetro's morning show and Executive Director of Emergency Mgmt. Agency Director Robert Warren:

http://www.630wpro.com/Article.asp?id=533869&spid=18074

The back story is that there was a major snowstorm last Thursday that lasted all afternoon and left staggering gridlock throughout Providence (all of this happened while Governor Carcieri was overseas in the Middle East to see RI troops). Some of my friends were stuck in traffic for 7 hours.

Warren was fired the next day (presumably, I would imagine this interview had something to do with it).

ENBB, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 21:23 (eighteen years ago)

Good times in Providence.

On the air, Mr. Cianci, 66, tends to tiptoe past the circumstances behind his racketeering conviction (other than to joke that he has a pet dog named Rico); past the corruption that infected his administration, reflected in the F.B.I. videotape of his top aide taking bribes; past the police scandal in which favored officers received advance information about tests for promotions.

Instead, he gleefully attacks Mayor Cicilline and his police commander, Dean M. Esserman. Intermixed with sharp analysis and legitimate criticism — of the city’s poor response to a snowstorm, for example — are taunts and half-truths, released into the radio air like toxic puffs.

When referring to the mutual admiration between the mayor and the police chief, he has played a recording of Barbra Streisand and Frank Sinatra singing “I’ve Got a Crush on You,” while his on-air partner has talked about a “man-crush.”

When asked about this, Mr. Cianci says his job is to be an entertainer, and his on-air persona should not be confused with the real — and changed — Buddy Cianci. Besides, he adds, because he cannot help himself: “I do think they like each other.”

Ned Raggett, Monday, 28 April 2008 18:07 (seventeen years ago)

heard a couple of old women at the local stop & shop discussing his radio show -- apparently on the show he's something of a self-styled critic of local gov't corruption. baffling in the extreme, but not so baffling as the fact that he's still so adored around here; those two biddies couldn't trade his praises enough.

Off the Hook Scrapple-Flavored Vodka, "assembled from parts in Smyrna, Delaware."

Not sure whether this gives the advantage to Delaware or Rhode Island.

Delaware can claim the Dogfish Head Brewery, but given its multiple IPAs I'm not sure that's an asset.
