Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 12:03 (twenty years ago)

It is absolutely fantastic and will be even more fucking freakish when they've fully 3d mapped every city and town. And then in ten years when it's LIVE and REAL TIME and you can zoom in on yourself that'll be just head-explodingly great.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 12:04 (twenty years ago)

Wow this thing is great! Melbourne is strangely unscanned - even half the CBD isnt included, but the St Kilda shoreline is there - so I couldnt see my house. But! Zoomed in on Canberra, where I'm from, and I could see my parents house! I could tell which one was theirs cos they're the only one in their street with an orange gravel front yard instead of green grass hehe. Could see my old school and all, its SO strange. We've spent the last hour zooming about, looking for Universal Studios (found that), Area 51 (where the fuck is it? Found Roswell but umm, yeah) and North Korea (pyongyanag there clearly, suprisingly).

The next killer app for this is allowing people to document their own neighborhood features and share them with friends. Google should have already integrated this across Maps and Blogger but that's their own oversight I suppose. How to turn it into more than a gee-whiz is tricky. It's tricky tricky tricky tricky tricky.

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 13 July 2005 19:08 (twenty years ago)

oh you can do that! a friend of mine sent me a layer with all of his places, I haven't played with it yet.

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 19:18 (twenty years ago)

he also emailed me this, I haven't played with these either:

In the last few days, a few dynamic data layers have been added.
These are realtime streams of real data that can be added as a layer
to Google Earth. The two coolest ones are:
http://cimms.ou.edu/~smith/wdssii/refqc.kmz
and
http://bbs.keyhole.com/ubb/download.php?Number=39752

The first one is realtime Doppler radar data. It autoupdates every
two minutes. The data is less than a few minutes old. You can get
realtime Doppler data right on your computer, zooming all the way down
to your house. We tried it a few minutes ago -- although no rain was
showing up on the Weather.com page, there was in fact a small rain
cell hovering over our neighborhood. Sure enough, it rained outside
for a few minutes and then stopped. So now you can get weather data
that's accurate to the minute and precise right down to your street.

The second one is realtime cloud data. It only updates every three
hours, but you can still get a picture of where large systems are and
see where the clouds are. It doesn't have nearly the resolution that
the Doppler one does, but it's close.

Spencer the capitol building issue has been the case since they added the satellite photos to maps.google.com! Also look up around the NAval Observatory area, north of Georgetown and Glover Park. That's Cheney's bunker.

I just love the simplest things, like turning on "streets" and seeing street names swim up out of the images.

Its like SimCity4 come to glorious life, and as someone who plays that a lot, this will be an invaluable tool for me, as I can look at real life city layouts for ideas.

How recent would the sat data be, and how often updated? Would that depend on each country's own databanks or something? (this is why I was suprised canberra and its surrounding towns were all there but a LOT of Melbourne was only in very low res)

There is a link on the site that explains what areas have the full hi-res coverage, and it isnt everywhere. Trayce (trayce), Friday, 15 July 2005 05:05 (twenty years ago)

err wtf? Let me try that again:

Oh no, I know it takes a while for the resolution to come good, but there are only partial areas covered by the full, less than 1m hires scans (usually done from plane flyovers). These are the ones you can "see your house" from, and Melbourne only has a few patches of them - bafflingly, theyve a patch that covers half the CBD right down the middle, so you cant see the most obvious structures you'd want to like Flinders st station or the arts centre spire :(

I guess soon enough more detailled scans will get added though. My suburb's also only in the low res scan area.

Sasha (sgh), Saturday, 10 December 2005 12:13 (twenty years ago)

Satellites take picture straight down but they take very large areas in one go. Whiolst what is immediately below them is stratight down what is off to one side will be tilted at an angle due to the curvature of the eart and see from an angle.

I finally downloaded google earth, and have been playing with it for the better part of the day. One thing I noticed about this, is the inconsistencies with the satellite photos meshing with other photos. Meaning, I've seen examples of very poor overlays with the photos (dots & lines). Of course, I wasn't expecting it to be top notch -- not even for the entire U.S. There are some regions that cover many miles of land area that are well projected. A comprehensive map projection of the entire U.S. would be fantastic. Although it would probably take YEARS for GIS techs to make this happen. Overall, I think it's quite handy and it could be the start of something great for the future.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Monday, 24 July 2006 21:50 (nineteen years ago)

Fourth part: something else
Fifth part: that ship off Iceland! Burning! Smoke! More info!
Sixth part: something else
Seventh part: conclusion of that burning ship off Iceland story!
