Anyone else notice that Roy Carroll is the cheapest keeper in the game? Ha ha.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 27 June 2001 02:46 (twenty-four years ago)

Onion's XI is in. I did autopick just to get started and the damn computer gave me three Newcastleers and Mark Viduka.

do you have to re-register?

Porkpie (porkpie), Wednesday, 27 June 2001 03:16 (twenty-four years ago)

Think so...

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 27 June 2001 03:26 (twenty-four years ago)

You can use your username, but you might have to get a new password - now needs at least two non-letter characters.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 27 June 2001 03:26 (twenty-four years ago)

yeah I had to monkey around with the passwords, only after I raised a new username though, weird

Porkpie (porkpie), Wednesday, 27 June 2001 03:30 (twenty-four years ago)

Also, how ugly are football kits these days? The Wigan one's a horror.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 27 June 2001 03:32 (twenty-four years ago)

The Nevada Limes are registered! I also used autopick, team details to come.

Adam In Real Life (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 27 June 2001 03:35 (twenty-four years ago)

yo carsmile, get one knowledge of how to spell Invitational ;)

Porkpie (porkpie), Wednesday, 27 June 2001 03:45 (twenty-four years ago)

four years pass...
And as the closed season gets shorter and shorter, so the gap between fantasy leagues must get shorter and shorter:

http://fantasy.premierleague.com

your ILX league is 19574-4204

hopefully "He Megged Ronaldo FC" will be able to challenge for that coveted european slot this year, we've got a lot of young lads coming through, and still hope to pick up another couple of players before the start of the season, brian.

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 18 July 2005 16:50 (twenty years ago)

I'm in. Well I will be when I think of a team name (SupercalifragilisticBorussiaMoenchengladbach being too long).

Wow!

I'm definitely in on this!

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Monday, 18 July 2005 16:59 (twenty years ago)

AdrianB (AdrianB), Monday, 18 July 2005 17:11 (twenty years ago)

adrian have you been thinking about this all summer ;)

(haha, by revealing your team we shall all now copy you :))

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 18 July 2005 17:14 (twenty years ago)

Natch.

AdrianB (AdrianB), Monday, 18 July 2005 17:15 (twenty years ago)

Fake's Seven are in.

Radzinski (Fulham)

Kiely (Charlton)
Thome (Wigan)

It's a mish mash of players I wanted followed by players from Wigan who let me afford it. Obviously it needs work.

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Monday, 18 July 2005 17:17 (twenty years ago)

Torpedo Stow
Cech (Chels)

Riise (European Champions Liverpool)
Alonso (European Champions Liverpool)
Lampard (Chels)
Milner (Newcastle)
Davis (Villa)

Cisse (European Champions Liverpool)
Henry (Arse)
Horsefield (West Brom)

2 of these will most likely change before Kick off

Porkpie (porkpie), Monday, 18 July 2005 19:55 (twenty years ago)

I won't be playing - last couple of long-term ones I've played, I've enjoyed picking the team then not bothered with transfers and subs and injuries and captains and all that, so I end up not playing properly and not enjoying it and drifting in the league with nothing interesting to play for. (A bit like Tottenham, really.)

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 18 July 2005 20:00 (twenty years ago)

b-b-but you could have an entire forward line of ex Bristol Rovers men! Affordably!

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 18 July 2005 20:02 (twenty years ago)

FWIW here are Fake's Seven:

Cech, Jaaskelainen, Carragher, Todd, Konchesky, Repka, Taylor, Garcia, Cahill, Lampard, Faye, Downing, Bellamy, Fowler, Morrison.

No Arsenal and no Man Utd. I might change this now I realise they've changed the rules a bit - you have to play at least three defenders, and the way you score points for assists and clean sheets has changed. Also, I forgot West Brom had stayed up and I thought they'd left them in it by accident so I ignored all WBA players.

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Monday, 18 July 2005 20:04 (twenty years ago)

ha, good point, William. That would be one of the cheapest forward lines one could buy.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 18 July 2005 20:06 (twenty years ago)

OK, Real Sociopath are in. And I just typed them all out rhen lost my wireless connection. I've remained fiercely loyal to the players that dragged me up from mid-table obscurity to a near-Champions League equivalent type placing. Except for the Evertonians. They've all gone.

Roy Carroll is mad cheap, isn't he?

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 18 July 2005 20:27 (twenty years ago)

To be true to myself, I should really have gone for

Robinson
Ferdinand Matteo Mills
Speed Kewell Bowyer Pennant
Smith Hasselbaink R.Keane

Subs: Martyn, Caldwell, Lennon, AN Other

£94m - shame we didn't get that much IRL!

Si.C@rter (SiC@rter), Monday, 18 July 2005 20:47 (twenty years ago)

I'm hoping to improve on last season's position.

Plinny's Dream

with a cool 0.5m in the bank to spare

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Monday, 18 July 2005 20:58 (twenty years ago)

Richardson is staying at United.

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Monday, 18 July 2005 21:00 (twenty years ago)

hurrah!

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Monday, 18 July 2005 21:01 (twenty years ago)

Doing this has given me the first glimpse of the new kits! I am strangely enamoured with Arsenal's already.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Monday, 18 July 2005 21:03 (twenty years ago)

Really? It made me want to vomit.

Adam In Real Life (nordicskilla), Monday, 18 July 2005 21:05 (twenty years ago)

...but that might be my resolution.

Adam In Real Life (nordicskilla), Monday, 18 July 2005 21:05 (twenty years ago)

Oh. Yeah actually it made me want to vomit too.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Monday, 18 July 2005 21:06 (twenty years ago)

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 09:27 (twenty years ago)

Summat went a wee bit haywire with the ILX date system thing last night for a couple of hours. All sorted now tho.

(xpost)

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 09:28 (twenty years ago)

so they've increased the "forwards scoring a goal" from 3 to 4 points and i think they've increased the assists (and are including winning a penalty this year (although not if the same player goes on to take the pen (the "andy johnson" rule, i think)) to 3 points.

henry is going to be unstoppable, surely...

the having to have 3 defenders (even after subs) rule sucks a bit though...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 09:40 (twenty years ago)

I've sold Richardson already, heh

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 09:43 (twenty years ago)

I'm in again! Will sort out my team later.

Davel (Davel), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 10:02 (twenty years ago)

forwards scoring a goal was already 4 points!

and the assists were already 3!

charltonlido (gareth), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 10:07 (twenty years ago)

oh silly me, i thought it was only 3...

henry still unstoppable though ;)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 10:11 (twenty years ago)

Suprised few people have picked Crespo - with the service of Robben and SWP, he could be awesome.

AdrianB (AdrianB), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 11:20 (twenty years ago)

will he play regularly enough tho? i'm amazed he didn't stay at Milan.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 11:22 (twenty years ago)

Grime Madrid
Reina (Carrol)

Toure
Heinze
Knight
Young (Quedrue)

Arca
Alonso
Carrick
Pires (c) (Etherington)

Cisse
Shearer (Job)

Although when I submit that team it has Heinze at Right Back instead of Luke Young?

casper, Tuesday, 19 July 2005 14:53 (twenty years ago)

Didn't Henry only cost 10 or 11 at the start of last year?

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 14:57 (twenty years ago)

caspar, they don't necessarily sit in the right slots, it don't matter ;)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 15:31 (twenty years ago)

I'm in, though I'll pick my team at a later date.

My team will be called: Dynamo Robot Force of Overlord Jel

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 15:39 (twenty years ago)

Coz, I'm waiting for Spurs to sign Figo and Baptista.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 15:41 (twenty years ago)

Dynamo Robot Force

1. Van Der Sar (c)
2. Hibbert
3. N'Gotty
4. Todd
5. Konchesky
6. Scholes
7. Andy Reid
8. Lampard
9. Osman
10. Defoe
11. Van Nistelrooy

Subs
12. Walker
13. Purse
14. Anderton
15. Helguson

A ropey defence, but okay in the middle and upfront. And old Spurs on the bench.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 16:08 (twenty years ago)

Do we have a league yet?

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 16:10 (twenty years ago)

Yep, entry code in Carsmile's first post!

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 16:51 (twenty years ago)

D'oh, I totally didn't notice!

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 16:54 (twenty years ago)

henry was 13m at start of last year

charltonlido (gareth), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 18:59 (twenty years ago)

you have to play at least three defenders

If this is the case, why is it letting me play two in my formation? Unless the keeper counts...

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 19:36 (twenty years ago)

What if all but two of your defenders are injured also?

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 19:37 (twenty years ago)

I think there's some new rule that says substitutes can only come on if the rules for formation are not broken - so you would probably end up with just ten players. Also, it looks like midfielders only get 1 point for clean sheets now.

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 21:53 (twenty years ago)

I really should read the new rules, then think about changing my team. But I probably won't.

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 21:55 (twenty years ago)

Cakeyskate United

Cech (James)
Lauren, King, Upson (Carragher, N'Gotty)
Zenden, Wright-Phillips, Greening, Carsley (Giannakopoulos)
Cole, Keane, Bent

I might swap Carragher in before the season starts.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 08:29 (twenty years ago)

a lot taking a chance on no lampard/henry this year. dilemmas!

charltonlido (gareth), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 09:08 (twenty years ago)

Onimo Pwnited

Cech (Carroll)
Terry, Knight, Mills (De La Cruz, Fortune)
Fabregas, Gerrard (cpt), Reid, Barry (Carsley)
Henry, Cole, Bent

Onimo (GerryNemo), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 11:04 (twenty years ago)

hello everyone!

which bent?

which cole?

charltonlido (gareth), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 11:07 (twenty years ago)

how the fuck do I scroll down in the positions to see all the players? this should be easy but it's not fucking happening.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 11:10 (twenty years ago)

ok I got it, < / stupid

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 11:14 (twenty years ago)

Andy Cole and Marcus Bent (xpost to Gareth).

Peter Crouch not available yet, and could be a good buy. Plus, I'm in half a mind to pick up Lee Bowyer if he comes on the market for his likely sale price of a couple of million.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 11:51 (twenty years ago)

my team

Goalkeeper: Cech (Chelsea)

Defenders: Terry (Chelsea), Upson (Birmingham), Carragher (Liverpool), Knight (Fulham)

Midfielders: Riise (Liverpool), Lampard (Chelsea), Solano (Villa), Speed (Bolton)

Strikers: Rooney (Man U) Davies (Bolton W)

Subs: Poom (Sunderland), Young (Charlton), Lennon (Tottenham), Vaughan (Everton)

not sure about Kevin Davies, will surely change him before the start.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 11:58 (twenty years ago)

I think FIFA is playing some fantasy league game somewhere. USA is now ranked 6th, above Engerland and France. And Canada is now ahead of Scotland at a dizzing 84th in the world behind the powerhouses of Estonia, Cuba and Wales.

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 12:43 (twenty years ago)

Not forgetting Iran tucked in 15th place between Itlay and Ireland, and Mexico in 5th!

Onimo (GerryNemo), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 12:49 (twenty years ago)

I have to admit that USA are deadly on their crosses and Mexico did will at the cup this summer.

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 13:28 (twenty years ago)

Mexico is NO JOKE this year, a real threat for the World Cup too if they can keep it together. They've spanked Brazil a couple of times this year, though admittedly that doesn't mean much in the actual competition.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 13:30 (twenty years ago)

They're just like Spain. If they were women they'd be smiling and flashing their eyelids at you all evening but when it comes to the front door not so much as a peck on the cheek goodbye let alone a 'coffee'

Ianah T Hollowale (blueski), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 13:47 (twenty years ago)

Hmmm.

Does this game involve thinking, or does it just play itself?

Peter Stringbender (PJ Miller), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 14:02 (twenty years ago)

You could theoretically pick a team now and not change it or even look at the site all season and you might still win.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 14:22 (twenty years ago)

Damn! Darren Purse is linked with a move to Cardiff, I'll need to buy a new cheapo super-sub. You just can't buy loyalty these days.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 17:00 (twenty years ago)

If we left Purse in our teams, what would happen?

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 17:00 (twenty years ago)

"You could theoretically pick a team now and not change it or even look at the site all season and you might still win."

That's what I did last year, I finished about fifth from bottom in the ILX league - wrecked by injury and financial mismanagement. If you could find the 15 fittest, play every match players, then yeah it might work.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 17:02 (twenty years ago)

Who is the most famous Canadian footballer ever?

Adam In Real Life (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 17:02 (twenty years ago)

Paul Peschiksolido (sp?)?

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 17:04 (twenty years ago)

I have no intention of paying attention to player form, first team status, or even the scoring system of this thing when I finally register my team. All of these things are beyond me now! Two years ago, things would have been diffeent.

Adam In Real Life (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 17:04 (twenty years ago)

Was Roy Weagerly a Canadian?

Spurs have Paul Salteri (sp?)?, he's Canadian

Owen Hargreaves is Canadain too.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 17:05 (twenty years ago)

I can't spell the names of Canadian people.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 17:06 (twenty years ago)

Tomasz Radzinski

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 17:07 (twenty years ago)

A few people managed mid-table without changing their selection once I think.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 17:10 (twenty years ago)

Radzinski has been the most expensive, costing Everton about 4 million if I remember. Craig Forrest played for Ipswich, West Ham and Chelsea through the 80s and 90s.

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 17:22 (twenty years ago)

Errol Crossan played for Manchester City, Gillingham, Southend United, Norwich City and Leyton Orient. He's a member of Norwich's hall of fame for his roll in guiding them to the FA semis back in 1959 with wins over Man U and Cardiff City while scoring in 7 consecutive games.

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 17:29 (twenty years ago)

You could theoretically pick a team now and not change it or even look at the site all season and you might still win.

I didn't change my team all of last season. Now I can't find out where I finished but I think it was at the upper end of the bottom half of the table.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 20:16 (twenty years ago)

Most famous Canadian footballer in Scotland = Nick Dasovic (played for St Johnstone, WAS IN A BAND CALLED THE VIRGIN WHORES!!! - rubbish, but looked a bit like Dave Grohl).

Other Canadians to have played in Scotland = Richard Hastings, David Xausa, erm, that's it, I think.

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 20:34 (twenty years ago)

Jason DeVos for Dundee.

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 20:49 (twenty years ago)

Sorry make that Dundee United before becoming Wigan's captain when they won promotion to the not too old first division before signing with someone else.

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 20:56 (twenty years ago)

Actually, we did this already, didn't we?

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 20:59 (twenty years ago)

If we left Purse in our teams, what would happen?

if a player is loaned out to a team outside the prem, they are shown as "injured" all season, i know this as i had a west brom player, chambers, to whom this happened last season.

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 21:16 (twenty years ago)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 12 August 2005 08:30 (twenty years ago)

i've made about six transfers already and not a ball has been kicked...

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Friday, 12 August 2005 08:42 (twenty years ago)

six? i've replaced most of my team TWICE already, only terry, lampard, henry, sheringham and repka (the last two for cheapness reasons) remain from my squad posted up there...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 12 August 2005 08:58 (twenty years ago)

hold on, adrian's gone from the ilx league, what's going on?

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 12 August 2005 09:02 (twenty years ago)

i'm going to join your league. hope that's ok.

michael grant (michael digby grant), Friday, 12 August 2005 10:44 (twenty years ago)

I decided that playing this year would be too time-consuming, I spent an inordinate amount of time on this bloody thing last time around. So I decided to erase my account.

AdrianB (AdrianB), Friday, 12 August 2005 11:14 (twenty years ago)

oh ok, also this means you get to retire undefeated adrian :)

yes michael, of course it's fine for you to join.

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 12 August 2005 11:16 (twenty years ago)

my team is rub (would probably still make TOP 10 like i did last year though!)

ken c (ken c), Friday, 12 August 2005 11:17 (twenty years ago)

I will still watch over the proceedings on this thread, natch.

AdrianB (AdrianB), Friday, 12 August 2005 11:19 (twenty years ago)

Last year this was just an excuse for me to go to the pub and watch lots of premiership games and do stupid things like cheering pointless Zoltan Gera consolation goals just because they got me points. Obviously I look forward to more of the same this year.

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 12 August 2005 11:20 (twenty years ago)

this is stupid! we can't check each others team until after the first round of matches. which means i can't hastily re(-)organise my team before tomorrow in the light of more informed team selections.

damn!

michael grant (michael digby grant), Friday, 12 August 2005 13:01 (twenty years ago)

well duh ;) although a lot of people have revealed teams above (may not be current though).

one tip though: get henry.

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 12 August 2005 13:09 (twenty years ago)

i had henry. then got rid to buy some (half) decent defenders. brought in cisse instead. i'm gonna guess you think this is a BAD MOVE? i debated for a while, but my back four was looking kinda shit. my team now is:

cech
(kirkland)

neville, p
cole
carragher
hibbert
(king)

fabregas
gamst pedersen
carrick
alonso (c)
(mcfadden)

cisse
defoe
(wright-phillips, b)

i'm thinking about putting henry in, but then i'd have to go back to having anton ferdinand and ryan nelsen in. and although i think they're both good defenders, i think both those defences will leak too many goals throughout a season.

michael grant (michael digby grant), Friday, 12 August 2005 13:20 (twenty years ago)

I like how it now lists the percentage of people who've picked a player instead of a meaningless number. Something like 42% have Terry and another 40% have Henry.

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Friday, 12 August 2005 13:24 (twenty years ago)

ooh i hadn't noticed that, there are a lot of little tweaks this year. although if you were KING SAD you could work it out before, because it says the number of teams somewhere top right...

michael, one could argue that scoring goals is more important than not letting any in (this thinking could be why i was very mid-table last year...)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 12 August 2005 13:29 (twenty years ago)

i find it very odd that only 3% have the masterful xabi alonso. that's less than have brett emerton or gareth barry! this is a crazy crazy world we live in.

(i wouldn't have that cuntbag terry in my team, even if you gave me the prize money here and now.)

michael grant (michael digby grant), Friday, 12 August 2005 13:35 (twenty years ago)

steve - i think i'm going to stick with what i've got. just looking at what transfers i could make to buy henry. i think i have strength throughout, and i don't want to risk that, just to have henry. (even if i do believe he's the greatest footballer in the world right now). i think with cisse and defoe (and bwp on the bench) i'll have plenty of goals even without henry.

anyway, this is what the season's all about. we'll see what happens when the football gets under way.

michael grant (michael digby grant), Friday, 12 August 2005 13:39 (twenty years ago)

I'm in. If I may. (I played at work last year blissfully aware that ilx had a league too.)

Henry? Pah - it's all over for him. Cisse/Diouf/Bellamy is the forward line to die for (and cheap).

(Hmm. We'll see.)

Jamie T Smith (Jamie T Smith), Saturday, 13 August 2005 06:06 (twenty years ago)

(i wouldn't have that cuntbag terry in my team, even if you gave me the prize money here and now.)

Excellent attitude, and the exact same reasoning that kept Cristiano Ronaldo out of my team last year.

I should go change my team a bit.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 13 August 2005 08:48 (twenty years ago)

Davids not playing today so had to make a last minute switch for Fabregas.

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Saturday, 13 August 2005 11:24 (twenty years ago)

When I try and log in it tells me I haven't picked my team yet. What's going on?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Saturday, 13 August 2005 14:36 (twenty years ago)

how do i join the ilx league?

my first day is going pretty good! both van nistelrooy(my captain) and defoe scored.

Lovelace (Lovelace), Saturday, 13 August 2005 14:38 (twenty years ago)

Mine isn't. I took an executive managerial decision to drop Teddy Sheringham.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 13 August 2005 16:53 (twenty years ago)

a nice start for me too. only jel is above me and after today I may have caught up, though it won't let me log in. site is seriously fucked, I logged in eventually last night.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 14 August 2005 19:59 (twenty years ago)

i checked it about an hour ago. you are top ronan. 61 points.

as a newcomer to this, i'm sitting on a respectable 39 points. would have had a few more if i'd actually remembered to change my captain to cech. d'oh.

who made the assist to ruud's goal?

Lovelace (Lovelace), Saturday, 20 August 2005 13:42 (twenty years ago)

Gary Neville I think, except it was really a Villa defender who flicked it on

Porkpie (porkpie), Saturday, 20 August 2005 13:49 (twenty years ago)

I am beginning to think that Forssell might not have been the wisest of choices (though I'd be very happy to be proved wrong in the next 40 minutes or so).

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 August 2005 16:28 (twenty years ago)

Bloody Gerrard, made him my captain and he made me zero points.

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Saturday, 20 August 2005 16:33 (twenty years ago)

31 points so far this weekend. Though, I fully expect Konchesky's red card to be receeded. Hopefully, Lampard will get a cople of goals tomorrow.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 20 August 2005 16:35 (twenty years ago)

Bottom of the league! I need to perform serious surgery to my team.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Saturday, 20 August 2005 16:37 (twenty years ago)

Do you get extra points if your player was sent off wrongly? I think you should.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 20 August 2005 16:37 (twenty years ago)

I'm glad I made Van Der Sar captain, he's responded really well so far.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 20 August 2005 16:40 (twenty years ago)

Gah, I know why I'm bottom. I didn't bother selecting formation or captain before the start of the season and therefore didn't realise I had Defoe sitting on the bench. Behind Marcus Bent in the striking pecking order.

I've just made four transfers. It halves my points total but it'll be better in the long run.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Saturday, 20 August 2005 16:50 (twenty years ago)

I am being tactical with the captaincy. Cech last week, Carra this. Figured the chances of him keeping out Sunderland were a bit safer than Petr's of shutting out the Arse. Plus I have Henry up front, so, y'know.

Also, where are the breakthrough players from the promoted clubs this season? Darren Bent seems to be the only proper bargain in the whole game at present.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 August 2005 16:54 (twenty years ago)

goals for defoe, alonso and gamst pedersen. assists for gamst pedersen and defoe. clean sheet for carragher. a provisional 37 points, and five of my starting line-up don't play til tomorrow. here's hoping for a 0-0 draw at stamford bridge and an everton clean sheet.

michael grant (michael digby grant), Saturday, 20 August 2005 17:00 (twenty years ago)

i also plumped for Carra as captain so am happy enough. i should've played Carroll instead of Friedel but at this rate Robinson will be replacing the latter anyway.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Saturday, 20 August 2005 19:47 (twenty years ago)

Oh dear, I am bad at this. I have a provisional points total of 9, as I did my "getting rid of Riise and replacing him with Gamst Pedersen" thing too late. Hat-trick for Lampard please. kthanxbye.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 21 August 2005 09:16 (twenty years ago)

I've been in France for the last two weeks, got back at midnight. I've got no idea what's been happening in the world of football. Or in the world in general. I come back to see my team have got off to a pretty weak start, and I have no strikeforce - my two selected strikers, Bellamy and Fowler, are both injured, and my substitute striker (Morrison) didn't play yesterday. Worse still, I don't think any of my substitutes will be allowed to replace the three missing strikers as this breaks the new rule about formations. Even worse still, if I am allowed to bring on my sub it's Konchesky who got sent off and scored -2 yesterday. Arse.

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Sunday, 21 August 2005 11:43 (twenty years ago)

2 of your strikers can be replaced, but there must be one on the field

charltonlido (gareth), Sunday, 21 August 2005 12:31 (twenty years ago)

ie, in your case, konchesky and repka will both come on, to replace faye and one of bellamy/fowler (with the other staying on)

charltonlido (gareth), Sunday, 21 August 2005 12:33 (twenty years ago)

Gotcha. So -2 for Konchesky, but +6 for Repka.

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Sunday, 21 August 2005 12:57 (twenty years ago)

Porkpie (porkpie), Sunday, 21 August 2005 14:33 (twenty years ago)

so can we find out if Drogba, Wright-Phillips and Essien makes the most expensive trio of substitutions ever in club football? Something like £70m?

Average Chelsea spend per month since Abramovich: £10m. Total Wenger spending in about nine years at Arsenal: £44m.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 21 August 2005 15:23 (twenty years ago)

Porkpie (porkpie), Sunday, 21 August 2005 17:45 (twenty years ago)

Excuse the Yank: what does "FC" or "AC" mean in team names? I'm curious!

Leeeeeeee (Leee), Sunday, 21 August 2005 18:00 (twenty years ago)

xpost: No problem. See you tomorrow afternoon in Trafalgar Square. I'll be the one wearing trainers.

Leeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee: Is that a real question? FC stands for Football Club.

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Sunday, 21 August 2005 18:11 (twenty years ago)

AC is usually something like Athletic Club.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 21 August 2005 18:17 (twenty years ago)

I don't know of any club apart from 'AC Milan' that have an 'AC' in their name, and, technically, they don't either. In Britain we call the two Milan teams 'AC Milan' and 'Inter Milan', but nobody calls them this in Italy (I lived just outside of Milan for a year and had this rammed home to me several times). As far the Italians are concerned the red and black team are called Milan (stress on the first syllable: MEE-lan), as opposed to the city which is called Milano (Mee-LAR-no). The blue and black team are called Inter. Nobody ever calls them Internazionale or Inter Milan. Football in Italian is 'Calcio', so I think AC stands for something like 'associazone di calcio' (but I don't know this), in other words the same as 'football club'. So us calling the teams AC Milan and Inter Milan (instead of Milan and Inter) is a bit like an Italian referring to Liverpool and Everton as Liverpool FC and Everton Liverpool.

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Sunday, 21 August 2005 18:18 (twenty years ago)

I once had a really pointless argument with a work colleague once who was trying to give me clues to a football team (don't ask, I don't know why), and started off by saying their name started with the letter F. Several hours and a whole bunch of brain-crashing letter, I gave up. His answer? FC Tirol. I could have hit him.

There are AFCs around, but that's not the same thing (Markelby to thread!)

Are Liverpool really not featuring in the next TWO gameweeks?

Six teams missing from the next gameweek and Arsenal and Liverpool seemingly missing from the one after that is wrecking predictable havoc with team selection.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Monday, 22 August 2005 12:14 (twenty years ago)

Thanks for pointing that out. I'm going to throw some points away and make a few transfers seeing as no one's going to score much this week anyway.

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Monday, 22 August 2005 12:33 (twenty years ago)

liverpool have qualifying champ league match then TEH SOOPER COOP!

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 22 August 2005 18:14 (twenty years ago)

thirteen points clear now, what with bonus points and all. come on bitches, just try and catch me!! yee-haw!!

michael grant (michael digby grant), Monday, 22 August 2005 20:06 (twenty years ago)

and can anyone explain to me what happens with rescheduled games? i'm guessing you must still get points for these? it just doesn't seem to make much sense to waste points changing my team around just to stay ahead now. when i'm quite confident in my squad over the course of a season. will it be harmful for me in the long run, not to make transfers this mid-week?

michael grant (michael digby grant), Monday, 22 August 2005 20:19 (twenty years ago)

You get points for the rearranged games, but only if you still have the players in your team when those games eventually happen. So if, for example, you've got Gerrard now he'll score nothing for the next two weeks. Later in the season Liverpool will play a couple of games in one gameweek, and if you still have Gerrard at that time then he could score you a few points, but they will be part of the score for that gameweek, not for this one. Does that make sense?

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Monday, 22 August 2005 21:34 (twenty years ago)

You can make one transfer per week without it costing you anything. So you could drop someone that isn't going to get any points and bring in someone that might in their place, then put them back at the end of the week.

Why am I telling you tactics? I am rubbish at this.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 22 August 2005 21:43 (twenty years ago)

carragher, hibbert, phil neville, alonso, cisse and mcfadden are all out.

only got edman and bradley wright-phillips to come on. everton have got fulhm this weekend, so i want to keep my everton players in. but with liverpool not playing midweek OR this weekend...hmmm. cisse might have to go. i do still tip him to have a good season, but...hmmm. we'll see. we'll see.

michael grant (michael digby grant), Monday, 22 August 2005 22:10 (twenty years ago)

Grrrrr. It's difficult enough to get half a team together for this gameweek, without Cech being dropped (why?) and Jaidi getting injured right at the start.

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 19:25 (twenty years ago)

Co'mon, Stalteri 3 shutouts in a row, woooo.

cech dropped? madness

at least lampard has two, as does thierry

Porkpie (porkpie), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 19:37 (twenty years ago)

Cor, Friedel's clean sheet almost makes up for me sacrificing Carragher for Jamie blummin Clapham who didn't even play last night anyway. A Defoe hat-trick would've been far more desirable though obv.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 20:02 (twenty years ago)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 25 August 2005 09:54 (twenty years ago)

cech was my god-damn captain. silly mourinho. and who is my reserve keeper? chris bloody kirkland. it's been a bad week. this will be why you people all have henry as your captain then. silly points-scoring system anyway. from what i saw, gamst pedersen was running rings around stalteri. but he gets less points. and why did carrick not play? and defoe for only 10minutes? bad week. bad, bad week.

michael grant (michael digby grant), Thursday, 25 August 2005 10:01 (twenty years ago)

there will bebonus point tomorrow probably, from what i saw on MOTD last night, i'd be surprised if gamst pederson didn't get one...

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Monday, 29 August 2005 21:24 (twenty years ago)

steve, you know that this is the wrong thing to do, it has been proven again and again over the last two seasons. also transfers at the start of a two week international break? [sucks teeth] always best to wait until you know which fool has broken something...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 08:48 (twenty years ago)

i wonder if stevem used his henry money to buy OWEN?

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 08:55 (twenty years ago)

My reasoning is thus:

Henry is now far too expensive to bother with. Van Nistelrooy should have a much better season than last time if he is to keep up, so I am banking on him matching Henry much more closely this time. If he doesn't then there are other options in Rooney, Drogba and um, Geoff Horsfield. Plus it allows more cash for stronger defence. I'm sure there will be times where I regret it though.

Luckily Ruud was brought in in time for last weekend - if he hadn't got that last minute goal at Newcastle I would've been fuming.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 08:59 (twenty years ago)

Geoff Horsfield is my Andy Johnson of this year (bought him as a cheap option, will end up scoring more than the overpriced diddies surrounding him).

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 15:37 (twenty years ago)

haha sounds like everyone has horsfield!

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 15:39 (twenty years ago)

18 points from cappy this week! Goal kick = assist! yay!

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 15:40 (twenty years ago)

who's bought OWEN already?!??!

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 15:40 (twenty years ago)

Ooh, they've brought back the thing that lets you see everyone else's teams (and the top 3 teams all have Horsfield!)

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 15:43 (twenty years ago)

if i hadn't cocked up the captaincy arrangement i'd have been joint top with carsmile

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 16:10 (twenty years ago)

i am a little afeared about john terry's injury, give it a week though, it might not be as bad as it looks.

i am totally not buying owen, he's bound to be overpriced...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 10:23 (twenty years ago)

yeh this is annoying as i already made my transfer for the next round. perhaps Mclaren will give Colin Cooper a game though - BWAHA NOT LIKELY.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 10:29 (twenty years ago)

I wouldn't have thought Owen being overpriced was the issue, it was more likely to be about where his points were going to come from.

To be a 20 goal striker, Owen will need 20 assists. Where are they going to come from in a Newcastle side that's just sold Jenas?

Plus, it's worth recalling Owen's actual stats - never scored more than 19 goals in a season, and that was in 2002 when Liverpool finished second. In 2004 he scored the same number of goals as Juan Pablo Angel. In 2000 he scored less goals than Paulo Wanchope.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 10:35 (twenty years ago)

Perhaps he will get the assists from Shearer. No, it's okay, I'm only joking.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 11:15 (twenty years ago)

haha michael owen sucks!

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 11:16 (twenty years ago)

Shay Given?

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 11:27 (twenty years ago)

You can't actually buy Owen yet anyway. Although Jenas is already listed under Spurs now.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 16:13 (twenty years ago)

I never seem to be capable of playing eleven players. Just logged on to find I have Downing (injured), Jaidi (injured), Todd (suspended) and Morrison (sold to Palace).

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Friday, 9 September 2005 13:05 (twenty years ago)

thank you for reminding me to check my team Jamie, didn't want to be leaving henry on the bench did i?

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 9 September 2005 13:21 (twenty years ago)

It was a tough choice between keeping schtum and hoping everyone else forgot, or sharing my self-pity with the world.

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Friday, 9 September 2005 13:27 (twenty years ago)

does it tell you if players are injured on your screen, or how can you check?

I was sure John Terry is injured but my team screen says nothing.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 9 September 2005 16:17 (twenty years ago)

no red i?

terry lennox. (gareth), Friday, 9 September 2005 17:40 (twenty years ago)

I am sure there wasn't one earlier, I swapped him for Luke Young now, don't fancy Zat Knight against Newcastle.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 9 September 2005 21:35 (twenty years ago)

no bludy red i next to henry though was there, grumble grumble...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Saturday, 10 September 2005 10:35 (twenty years ago)

Yes there was. I had red "i"s next to Henry and Terry and Downing. Cue much reshuffling.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 10 September 2005 10:50 (twenty years ago)

second place........come on!!!

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 10 September 2005 20:46 (twenty years ago)

ha, wait 'til teddy gets a hat-trick tonight ;)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 12 September 2005 08:39 (twenty years ago)

If I can actually force myself into contention in this it will be my greatest achievement yet.

Henry's knackered for four weeks, now I can finally drop him without getting THE FEAR.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 12 September 2005 09:00 (twenty years ago)

oh my, limped to joint first this week. but it'd take me a couple of weeks to get the team shipshaped again. but hopefully you guys will do just as bad this coming week!!!

ken c (ken c), Monday, 12 September 2005 09:04 (twenty years ago)

And we've got the highest weekly score, thanks to dear old One-Goal Jimmy Bullard. Add in Nelsen's clean sheet from yesterday and Benayoun's hat-trick this evening and we should well and truly be rolling.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 12 September 2005 09:10 (twenty years ago)

I just can't decide whether or not to GET BENT.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Monday, 12 September 2005 09:10 (twenty years ago)

I got Bent after one game. He's this year's Andy Johnson/James Beattie/Kevin Phillips. You think he's going to stop scoring but he won't, and by the time you finally put him in it'll be too late.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 12 September 2005 09:13 (twenty years ago)

Eh, one goal'll do. Well done Yossi.

(anyone got Harewood?)

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 12 September 2005 20:42 (twenty years ago)

I should be up to second if the BBC website's report of Teddy Sheringham being the man of the match translates into bonus points...

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 12 September 2005 21:36 (twenty years ago)

I seem to be locked into some kind of battle of the James/Jamies (8th-10th).

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Monday, 12 September 2005 21:45 (twenty years ago)

TWO assists for teddy, that'll do me :)

the question is, what to do about henry?

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 08:52 (twenty years ago)

bah if nicky hunt hadn't come on for those last 12 minutes, repka would've got me another 5...

...i reckon reyna is good for some bonus points too, from what i read in the paper yesterday

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 08:55 (twenty years ago)

the question is, what to do about henry?

Sell him and never look back, as I have done. I'm now convinced that by May he won't have as many points as Ruud, or indeed Darren Bent at this rate. Plus you get to buy better defenders/midfielders with the extra cash.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 08:57 (twenty years ago)

but this has NEVER WORKED BEFORE!!! ;)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 09:07 (twenty years ago)

blimey, you can have one and a half d bents for an henry...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 09:09 (twenty years ago)

(In FF mode) Yay, Harewood! But he should have had some points for their second goal, surely?!

(In real life) Completely gutted by Sunderland's conceding 93rd minute goal.

Ranking Rupert (Ranking Rupert), Saturday, 17 September 2005 21:20 (twenty years ago)

Thought I did terribly today and yet have gained ground again! As they say the sign of a good team is winning when performing poorly, haha.

I am really enjoying actually doing well in this this year, even if it is early days, need some big performances tomorrow though I feel.

I just realised, it seems you can actually change your captain between match days? This is quite important!

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 17 September 2005 21:47 (twenty years ago)

No Andy Cole? No Horsfield? Where's my strikeforce?

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Sunday, 18 September 2005 13:45 (twenty years ago)

hmm maybe you can't change your capitan between match days

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 18 September 2005 14:07 (twenty years ago)

so ken and I (with our similar teams) march on.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 18 September 2005 19:16 (twenty years ago)

you can change yr captain ronan, it's directly under the picture of your squad, there's a drop-down box that says "captain" next to it, it's above where you put your subs in order.

i notice you and ken have nobody taking part in tonight's match whereas i (may) have up to three players, i've ceratinly got another 3 points coming off the bench anyway...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 19 September 2005 13:49 (twenty years ago)

that first paragraph should have the phrase "when you click on 'my team'" in it somewhere, probably near the beginning...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 19 September 2005 13:56 (twenty years ago)

yes, unless all carsmile's players get yellow cards etc. i think he'll take back the lead after tonight.

i'm surprised i'm doing as well as i am though seeing that every week so far i've only had 10 scoring players, or less!!! (been in transfer turmoil)

ken c (ken c), Monday, 19 September 2005 14:48 (twenty years ago)

and you have Henry up front, which is currently less astute than it normal is.

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Monday, 19 September 2005 15:46 (twenty years ago)

see transfer turmoil in prevous comment.

i had 4 players i needed to swap out (never played, injury, crap striker), i'm on stage 2 of 4 of the project at the moment!! which is another reason why i'm suprised i'm still doing so well!!!!!!!

ken c (ken c), Monday, 19 September 2005 16:10 (twenty years ago)

Get in there! Ahead of SteveM on alphabetical order, Torpedo Porkpie in my sights, top of the table just 19 points away...

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Monday, 19 September 2005 20:47 (twenty years ago)

WOW. carsmile only picked up one point from the three playahs tonight! pending bonus points i'm ahead proper for the first time so far this season (and hopefully i'm getting more players)

ken c (ken c), Monday, 19 September 2005 20:59 (twenty years ago)

Stick with Henry, he'll do you proud...

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Monday, 19 September 2005 21:06 (twenty years ago)

Bah, I had to get rid of Del Horno and decided I'd better replace him with an Arsenal player since I was most likely to pick up clean sheet points. "hah" I thought, "i'll pick Ashley Cole as I might get some assist points maybe off him, more likely him than Sol Campbell, eh?"

It's thinking like that that means I'm not winning.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 19 September 2005 21:19 (twenty years ago)

I'm thinking of selling Lampard and playing three Chelsea defenders. They will win every game 2-0 for the rest of the season.

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Monday, 19 September 2005 21:20 (twenty years ago)

Actually, I'm thinking of selling Lampard and buying N'Zogbia. Is this just plain silly?

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Friday, 23 September 2005 14:41 (twenty years ago)

you won't know until next week!

ken c (ken c), Friday, 23 September 2005 14:44 (twenty years ago)

my strike force and half my defence are RUBBIDGE, but i don't want to lose lots of points replacing them all at once, i'm about as fragile as charlton at the moment i think...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 23 September 2005 15:09 (twenty years ago)

I suspect a lot of people will buy N'Zogbia as soon as they get the chance. if i were to swap Horsfield for Bent right now you can be sure the former would outscore the latter tomorrow. Feh.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Friday, 23 September 2005 15:11 (twenty years ago)

problem with n'zogbia is, other newcastle midfielders returning now, not sure if he'll be playing or not

terry lennox. (gareth), Friday, 23 September 2005 15:22 (twenty years ago)

i though newcastle only had four midfielders left anyway after selling Jenas and Robert - plus N'Zogbia surely deserves to keep his place so far.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Friday, 23 September 2005 15:26 (twenty years ago)

I could cope with N'Zogbia not playing. What I couldn't cope with is Lampard suddenly remembering how to score. I fear I'm on the verge of a crucial mistake (like selling Henry last season).

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Friday, 23 September 2005 15:34 (twenty years ago)

I wouldn't drop Lampard - Chelsea started slowly last year, grinding out narrow wins based more on defence, but then they started scoring loads, and I think they will again. Lampard might very easily be the top scoring midfielder in the whole league, I would imagine. I like N'Zogbia, but I wouldn't expect him to match up to that.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 23 September 2005 16:10 (twenty years ago)

who's this n'zogbia person?

well he is the most in form midfielder, and super cheap.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Friday, 23 September 2005 16:46 (twenty years ago)

terry lennox. (gareth), Friday, 23 September 2005 16:49 (twenty years ago)

I have bought N'Zogbia. But only because I have a pile of players who aren't getting a game and everyone else is shying off buying him, so I'll be the one to take the chance.

Then you can all point at me and laugh.

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 23 September 2005 21:23 (twenty years ago)

Me too. And guess who relegated Repka to the bench to get N'Zogbia into my team (figuring no chance West Ham would keep a clean sheet against the Arse)? Hopefully Middlesbrough will keep a clean sheet, or else some nasty injury will befall Franck Quedrue in the run-up to the match (all my other players got points).

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 25 September 2005 10:12 (twenty years ago)

No games for Todd, Jaidi or Cole (Andy) so it looks like I've got three subs coming on. Two of them are West Ham defenders. :-)

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Sunday, 16 October 2005 21:00 (twenty years ago)

A lot of empty seats at the 'Stadium of Light' (arf). I wonder if they're regretting their decision to halve United's allocation as a punishment for that shocking crime of persistent standing.

They slashed ours (Leeds) allocation to 1,000 last season and still managed 43,000-odd though admittedly that was Boxing Day. Prices gone up since then?

Si.C@rter (SiC@rter), Monday, 17 October 2005 19:41 (twenty years ago)

hahaha, FORTY TWO POINTS for lampard as captain, and that's without a clean sheet...

it does appear that i have frittered away the henry money that i had been saving for his return, so there may need to be a bit of chopping and changing to get him back for saturday...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 09:57 (twenty years ago)

Oh, rub it in that I didn't confirm Lampard as my captain, why don't you. And I wasted my Henry money on Ruud van Horseyface and then left him as third sub, fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck, etc, and probably can't afford to get him back

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 20:57 (twenty years ago)

TH - yes, good idea.

Up to 7th, just two points from 5th. Europe beckons...

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Sunday, 30 October 2005 19:28 (nineteen years ago)

Looks like I'll get Ledley back in due to Gera and Stelios not playing this weekend. I don't think I'll recover from that catastrophic week of not reinstating Lampard as my captain. Also Cech hasn't kept a clean sheet since I bought him.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 30 October 2005 19:37 (nineteen years ago)

HAH TOP TEN AGAIN after a year, worst to first, I'm the Wigan of the Invamatational League

You think you're going to finish second?!

Chimbonda turned out to be the right purchase at the right time (although really he should've been in from the start - who'da funk?)

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Monday, 31 October 2005 11:26 (nineteen years ago)

I meant that I will adopt the affliction formerly known as "the curse of Stevem", in that every time I drop a player they will suddenly score squillions of points and be really good.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 31 October 2005 18:14 (nineteen years ago)

I dread to think how my team is doing!

jel -- (jel), Monday, 31 October 2005 18:15 (nineteen years ago)

AFC are going the same way as IFK (note to self: next season, IRONIC ASHDOD), I'm afraid, except without psychotic 100-points-in-a-week episode (WHERE ARE YOU NOW AJ?). However, I've concocted a two-part transfer masterplan. The first part involves junking Gera for Steven Davis. The second part relies on Charlton having one of those dips in form they're so fond of...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 31 October 2005 19:03 (nineteen years ago)

Gera's next on the way out for me. So hang onto him as he will probably hit a terrific run of form in exactly the same way that N'Zogbia and Gamst Pederson have gone shit, and that Cech hasn't kept a clean sheet for weeks.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 31 October 2005 19:08 (nineteen years ago)

My captain let in 4 goals! I threw a tea cup at my computer.

teddy, if i ever needed a hattrick, it's tonight, i bombed this week and chris is right up behind me (if you'll pardon the expression...)

having made no subs for a couple of weeks, time for a bit of surgery i think...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 5 December 2005 13:46 (nineteen years ago)

Hat-trick for Repka please. How come the further down the subs bench I drop people the better they do (see Ben Haim's unlikely clean sheet against the Arse)?

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 5 December 2005 18:00 (nineteen years ago)

Sheringham not even on the bench as Bobby Zamora scores. No hatrick for Repka yet, but he has let one in.

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Monday, 5 December 2005 20:49 (nineteen years ago)

was that an assist for young Yossi? :)

Porkpie (porkpie), Monday, 5 December 2005 21:06 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, Repka got booked as well. I have two one-pointers to get transferred in, with six-pointer Ben Haim right down the wrong end of the bench. Not the best week ever thus far.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 5 December 2005 21:10 (nineteen years ago)

bloody Defoe, why'd ya have to go all crap? and i put Cisse in my team thinking Liverpool's two games would see him do something but he scored a zero so that was a waste.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Monday, 5 December 2005 21:39 (nineteen years ago)

N-n-n-n-n-nineteen points!?!

The United stutter (ba-doom tish) (and my misguided decision to deprive Frankie of the captaincy for a week) sends Sparta Redcliffe into freefall.

A Rooney hat-trick and three Park assists tomorrow night plz. Or else my season is over.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 09:11 (nineteen years ago)

I forgot to change my team this time so I'm 'playing' a few injured players - hopefully some automatic substitutions will improve my measly 25 points.

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 09:39 (nineteen years ago)

I changed my team but forgot about the double matches for some teams this week, so didn't really do it to my best advantage. I think my season is well and truly over.

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 18:17 (nineteen years ago)

hmm, according to the paper this morning teddy is crocked so he shouldn't be playing tonight which means danny murphy will get subbed in for 6 and then when repka and benayoun score hattricks tonight everything will be super :)

I was relived to find that only a couple of people still have him. i'm having the worst luck picking players - why is Curbishley resting Ambrose so much given his goal-scoring tendencies? and when is Aaron Lennon going to score his first goal? there's no way i'm getting out of this mid-table mire it seems. back to the old Ruud vs Thierry dilemma now...

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 11:37 (nineteen years ago)

Several times now I've logged on on a Saturday afternoon to find that none of formation / substitute changes I'd made made the day before have taken place, and it's too late to do anything about it because the games have already started. Either I'm an idiot who keeps forgetting to click the 'save team changes' button, or there's a global conspiracy out to stop my fantasy football team.

Tehrannosaurus HoBB (the pirate king), Saturday, 4 February 2006 12:24 (nineteen years ago)

I've stopped looking at this since I got caught up in the title race in my other league. Only two or three point separating the top two at any one time. That and I've forgotten my password.

I think I might still be playing Mido and Darren Bent upfront.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Saturday, 4 February 2006 13:52 (nineteen years ago)

I curse Fat Frank. Should have kept Henry as captain.

Mike W (caek), Sunday, 12 March 2006 18:04 (nineteen years ago)

I had Stelios, Bent and Henry, yet I somehow had Cristiano Ronaldo as captain :(

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 12 March 2006 18:05 (nineteen years ago)

I made Helguson captain cos he's playing twice this round. Too bad he didn't take the penalty against Everton yesterday. Probably won't score against Liverpool but you never know.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Sunday, 12 March 2006 18:05 (nineteen years ago)

ronaldo could well have had 2 goals though!

ken c (ken c), Sunday, 12 March 2006 19:13 (nineteen years ago)

Ken's going to win this, and I'll be lucky to scrape into the top ten, so I'm just focussing on beating SteveM (who I spent the whole of last season trying to catch) and Ailsa (who overtook me on the final day of last season). Kind of like Aston Villa contenting themselves with being the best team in the West Midlands.

Tehrannosaurus HoBB (the pirate king), Sunday, 12 March 2006 21:24 (nineteen years ago)

it's been a tough season because having finished second last time there was much pressure to improve on that. i feel like yer man Moyes.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Sunday, 12 March 2006 21:29 (nineteen years ago)

i think there are still too many games left to draw any conclusions. red bull dozers certainly can't relax just yet.

ken c (ken c), Sunday, 12 March 2006 21:56 (nineteen years ago)

Didn't put McFadden back either. And he's scored one and set up two. I hate this game :-(

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 18 March 2006 14:44 (nineteen years ago)

What happens if my captain doesn't play?

If your captain does not play then the bonus will be lost. Another player will not take over the captaincy in his place.

Ungh.

Mike W (caek), Sunday, 26 March 2006 18:02 (nineteen years ago)

And if your captian gets negative points, they double! Thanks for less then nothing Gerrard.

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Monday, 27 March 2006 14:17 (nineteen years ago)

59 points this week. Time for a late surge from Bailey's Bananas.

Duncan Bailey, Wednesday, 29 March 2006 20:04 (nineteen years ago)

four first team players not playing thus scoring 0 but still should have 56 pts assuming my subs Knight and Reid will replace two of the four that didn't play.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 20:14 (nineteen years ago)

With perfect timing I signed Saha and made him captain, just in time for him to stop scoring and get dropped.

Teh HoBBler (the pirate king), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 20:19 (nineteen years ago)

i'd like to thank portsmouth for meaning that henry (oh captain, my captain) scored 0 this week.

it's hella close apart from ken, only 23 points between 2nd and 8th, St hubbins town coming on a very late run into 2nd...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 30 March 2006 09:33 (nineteen years ago)

into 3rd for the first time this season. sadly, i think its too late to catch kenchelsea, but 2nd is achievable, and after the poor start to the season (swp!), lido will be happy with champions league football next season

charltonlido (gareth), Thursday, 30 March 2006 09:57 (nineteen years ago)

i am on course to win the Champions League, having qualified for it last season. of course there's no way to prove/disprove this, but what a lovely thought.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 30 March 2006 10:03 (nineteen years ago)

I'm putting my poor performance this week down to a clerical error that saw me accidentally put Kewell as third sub rather than in the pissing midfield. Math is hard.

How many Champion's League spots are there?

Mike W (caek), Thursday, 30 March 2006 10:19 (nineteen years ago)

Also, who else is excited about World Cup fantasy football? I am!!

Mike W (caek), Thursday, 30 March 2006 10:20 (nineteen years ago)

four. and two WAFA cup.

yes, yes, bring on world cup fantasy leagues/predictaleagues/anything else that stops me doing any work in june ;)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 30 March 2006 10:32 (nineteen years ago)

they're never as satisfying though. you put Torres or Shevchenko in when the smart money should really be on the Tunisian substitute who scores a hat-trick against Saudi Arabia in the last ten minutes.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 30 March 2006 10:49 (nineteen years ago)

the bbc "pick the top 5 scorers" from last world cup was dead good though, dead simple, no faffing about.

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 30 March 2006 11:03 (nineteen years ago)

redbulldozers can still lose it! There are certainly enough games left to catch up the 100 or so pts (the swing is typically about 20-40 a game).

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 30 March 2006 11:09 (nineteen years ago)

i liked the euro2004 one we did the last time (but really only because i was FOURTH BEST IN THE WHOLE WORLD in it)

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 30 March 2006 11:11 (nineteen years ago)

I liked the 2002 World Cup fantasy league, which I won! I am ILX's world champion, therefore...

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 30 March 2006 11:24 (nineteen years ago)

i liked the euro2004 one we did the last time

eurgh, i remember picking PAULETA as my star striker.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 30 March 2006 11:57 (nineteen years ago)

I'm just focussing on beating SteveM (who I spent the whole of last season trying to catch) and Ailsa (who overtook me on the final day of last season). Kind of like Aston Villa contenting themselves with being the best team in the West Midlands.

78 points for steve, 75 for ailsa, at this rate I won't even be Aston Villa, I'll be Birmingham. Or Walsall.

Teh HoBBler (the pirate king), Thursday, 30 March 2006 13:53 (nineteen years ago)

godammit, and that's with two of my strikers not even playing (two available subs already used).

i have just about given up on Darren Ambrose!

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 30 March 2006 14:21 (nineteen years ago)

With perfect timing I signed Saha and made him captain, just in time for him to stop scoring and get dropped

Ha, at least I wasn't the only one.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Thursday, 30 March 2006 14:24 (nineteen years ago)

Bolton's defence always looks a lot solider when N'Gotty plays - why does Allardyce not play him every game?

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 30 March 2006 14:31 (nineteen years ago)

With perfect timing I signed Saha and made him captain, just in time for him to stop scoring and get dropped

So I sold him yesterday and bought Beattie. Doh doh doh doh doh!

Teh HoBBler (the pirate king), Saturday, 1 April 2006 16:16 (nineteen years ago)

Meh. What rotten luck. I need Bolton's second game to result in many points to make this week better than mediocre.

Mike W (caek), Saturday, 1 April 2006 16:28 (nineteen years ago)

bad week for me, but it's okay, at least I was #2 for a week!

Haikunym (Haikunym), Saturday, 1 April 2006 18:20 (nineteen years ago)

i put saha on bench:/

charltonlido (gareth), Saturday, 1 April 2006 18:29 (nineteen years ago)

sahahahaha

Haikunym (Haikunym), Saturday, 1 April 2006 21:22 (nineteen years ago)

one step closer to the title.

ken c (ken c), Sunday, 2 April 2006 02:22 (nineteen years ago)

thought about moving captaincy to nolan this week but stuck to henry in the end (because villa is teh suck lately) which probably means nolan will score in the next game.

ken c (ken c), Sunday, 2 April 2006 02:27 (nineteen years ago)

back in the top ten finally!

Konal Doddz (blueski), Sunday, 2 April 2006 10:22 (nineteen years ago)

omg, so you are! i hadnt looked down that far

charltonlido (gareth), Sunday, 2 April 2006 10:40 (nineteen years ago)

dear MGP please do not play against wigan tomorrow so that arron lennong gets subbed into my tean, okthxbye.

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Sunday, 2 April 2006 19:22 (nineteen years ago)

wow i was content to watch my lead get chipped away and hold on til the end of the season but actually we ending up pulling away that little bit further!

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 12:33 (nineteen years ago)

Gameweek 33 Total: 2 Points (Provisional)

Hurrah! Worst. Day. Ever. (admittedly, I've only had one player playing so far)

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 8 April 2006 15:19 (nineteen years ago)

Right, Mr Wenger, what's the deal with dropping Henry on a week where Arsenal have two games so I decided to make him captain. Eh? EH?

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 9 April 2006 18:08 (nineteen years ago)

Gameweek 34 starts this Friday evening with the game between Manchester United and Sunderland, so the deadline is 14th April, 19:30. Gameweek 35 starts with an early kick off game between Tottenham and Manchester United on Easter Monday, so the deadline for Gameweek 35 is 17th April, 11:30.

There are also 4 teams who do not play in Gameweek 35: Arsenal, Fulham, Manchester City and Liverpool, so Managers with 3 Liverpool or Arsenal players should make sure they can field a starting 11 for Gameweek 35, and should choose their captain accordingly.

That sensation you feel is the Quickening.

Mike W (caek), Thursday, 13 April 2006 19:48 (nineteen years ago)

Ken still over a hundred points clear, a close battle for second place, and I'm one of six challenging Ronan for the 10th place spot.

Teh HoBBler (the pirate king), Saturday, 15 April 2006 19:04 (nineteen years ago)

for the first time since christmas, i have kelvin davis on the bench. though, carrolls replacement, kiely, also kept a clean sheet

manu's inability to rip sunderland to shreds has finally closed the door on my extremely long odds of catching ken, and has left me with a tough fight on hands for 2nd:/

charltonlido (gareth), Saturday, 15 April 2006 19:21 (nineteen years ago)

one last big push for a UEFA spot...

Konal Doddz (blueski), Saturday, 15 April 2006 22:40 (nineteen years ago)

A stonking 51 point day puts Pie FC back in the UEFA spots!

Can we disqualify Ken C so as to make it more interesting? ;)

Si.C@rter (SiC@rter), Saturday, 15 April 2006 23:49 (nineteen years ago)

haha, i think wenger must have henry in his fantasy squad too, he took him off after 61 minutes yesterday so he gets 2 points...

blimey, week 35 could decide the whole season, for those of us behind ken. perhaps we can persuade him to chang ehis whole team for arsenal/liverpool/fulham/man city players, then we might stand a chance of catching up :)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Sunday, 16 April 2006 09:51 (nineteen years ago)

argh! if i transfer out henry for tomorrow's games, he's going to cost me .4 more to buy him back next week and i've only got .1 in the bank!!!

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Sunday, 16 April 2006 09:56 (nineteen years ago)

I fucking overslept and missed my chance to change captains. There goes Champions League for me.

caek (caek), Monday, 17 April 2006 13:15 (nineteen years ago)

Woo-hoo! I'm back in the top ten.

Teh HoBBler (the pirate king), Monday, 17 April 2006 22:00 (nineteen years ago)

disastrous weekend - only Blackburn can save me now.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 09:47 (nineteen years ago)

i've been really slack with making changes (should have paid attention to the bizarre gameweeks setup over easter!!) and sitting on my laurels of that 100 lead! but it's being chipped away slowly by silly lampard and silly henry no games.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 10:44 (nineteen years ago)

Ken's lead now 84 points - that's just about bridgeable. My luck has turned - 51 points with just 8 players. I'm now level with Steve and 5 behind Ronan, but there's a desperate scrabble for respectability (ie the top ten) with just 20 points separating seven of us from 9th to 16th.

Teh HoBBler (the pirate king), Thursday, 20 April 2006 08:55 (nineteen years ago)

Another low scoring round on the cards what with six teams not featuring (inc. Chelsea, Man U and Blackburn).

I don't really want Arsenal to beat Spurs...but now I have Toure in defence and Henry captaincy restored.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 20 April 2006 08:59 (nineteen years ago)

blimey there are THREE boro games in the penultimate game"week"...

there's actually only 4 teams missing the coming week:

Man u, blackburn, chelsea and boro

but that could SERIOUSLY dent some people's scores...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 20 April 2006 09:40 (nineteen years ago)

I hate the end of season - everything goes out the window, and it becomes impossible to know who to sign. Birmingham, WBA, Portsmouth and even Sunderland will probably start getting ridiculous wins. Boro have got 3 games in a week, yes, but they might also have a couple of cup finals so will they be playing their best team? If Chelsea have won the league with two games to spare will they just stick out the reserves and lose the last two games? Are Spurs going to finish on a high, or lose at Highbury and implode?

Teh HoBBler (the pirate king), Thursday, 20 April 2006 09:46 (nineteen years ago)

Nine points, only seven players (plus Carragher later in the week) none of whom could manage to break the two-point barrier. Cech, Lampard, Rooney & Neville on the bench as Chelsea and United
have no league games this week. Mendes and Lua-Lua (my captain!) still injured for Porstmouth. Stelios dropped. Senderos and Eboue only managing half a game each. Arse.

Teh HoBBler (the pirate king), Monday, 24 April 2006 08:21 (nineteen years ago)

blimey, it's carnage! WBS hasn't scored a single point yet! gareth has chosen well with nobby as his captain though.

the CRUNCH is definitely upon us, but which boro players to go for...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 24 April 2006 11:14 (nineteen years ago)

i really should check my team....

ken c (ken c), Monday, 24 April 2006 11:16 (nineteen years ago)

DUDES! don't forget, last chance to change teams before MEGAWEEK!!

i choo-choo-choose stuart downing!

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 28 April 2006 11:08 (nineteen years ago)

ok due to faffing that actually became King, Lennon, Keane out (they've only got 1 game in the week against bolton where my defensive points come from), Quederue, Downing and McBride IN.

watch now as ledley makes a remarkable recovery and scores a double hattrick whilst the new three get sent off...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 28 April 2006 11:36 (nineteen years ago)

throwing away precious 8 points steve!

ken c (ken c), Friday, 28 April 2006 11:58 (nineteen years ago)

well lets wait and see about that shall we ;)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 28 April 2006 12:17 (nineteen years ago)

Duncan Bailey powers past Torpedo Stow into 7th place.

Teh HoBBler (the pirate king), Saturday, 29 April 2006 22:09 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, well, that didn't work too well. Neither of my Boro players featured and I dropped Matt Taylor to the bench to accommodate them. Of course, they'll probably play later in the week so Taylor won't get to replace either of them.

Si.C@rter (SiC@rter), Sunday, 30 April 2006 09:48 (nineteen years ago)

My strikeforce is Lua Lua (who hasn't featured at all since his celebration went wrong) and Rooney :(

Teh HoBBler (the pirate king), Sunday, 30 April 2006 09:51 (nineteen years ago)

Right, come on Bolton. Hat-tricks for Nolan and Davies (with Keane replying with one of his own in a 6-3 win) please.

Si.C@rter (SiC@rter), Sunday, 30 April 2006 13:35 (nineteen years ago)

ha, between you, you brought in quedrue, riggott, downing, boateng and hasselbaink, and, not one of them played:D

charltonlido (gareth), Sunday, 30 April 2006 14:27 (nineteen years ago)

Hmmmm. Sinking down to 14th with just the final weekend to go, doesn't look like I'll make the top ten after all. Still, good luck to Duncan Bailey. ;-)

Teh HoBBler (the pirate king), Thursday, 4 May 2006 21:02 (nineteen years ago)

poor cabbage had 15pt Reid on the bench. i could've benefitted more from fielding Reo-Coker again myself. Arse.

still I wanted, nay, demanded at least a top ten finish after a difficult transitional season and the boys done alright.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 4 May 2006 21:21 (nineteen years ago)

BLIMEY! three points between second and fourth!! with lampard being rested, i have gone for stevie gerrard...

Ken C walks it by a mile. Charlton Lido gets the automatic champions league spot. SteveM hits the dizzy heights of 8th. I suffer the shame of being caught by Matt DC despite the fact he said somewhere on this thread that he hasn't even looked at his team for several months, never mind changed it. Ronan's team sunk like a stone. Ailsa just about avoided relegation. 'Duncan Bailey' had a final day with only seven players, with both the captain and new signing being amongst the numerous zeroes.

Teh HoBBler (the pirate king), Sunday, 7 May 2006 19:19 (nineteen years ago)

if Ronaldo gets a bonus will i pip Chris B?

Konal Doddz (blueski), Sunday, 7 May 2006 19:23 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, I forgot about bonus points.

Teh HoBBler (the pirate king), Sunday, 7 May 2006 19:24 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah I kind of got scared to look after my first slump. I wouldn't advise this strategy.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 7 May 2006 19:27 (nineteen years ago)

I won the Scottish one! I care not about your silly Premiership!

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 7 May 2006 19:30 (nineteen years ago)

Fucking hell. How many people were in that?

Teh HoBBler (the pirate king), Sunday, 7 May 2006 19:31 (nineteen years ago)

About 1500. No prizes, and I don't think anyone was taking it seriously. But yeah, all kudos gratefully received!

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 7 May 2006 19:34 (nineteen years ago)

I think they could charge £1 a month entry next season and for however many people are in the same league as you there's a monthly cash prize for the top manager that month - so if you're in a league with 29 others and you top the table in August you get £30 etc.

Would be much more incentive and make things saucier. I'd organise it myself for the ILX league but I guess that just wouldn't be cricket.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Sunday, 7 May 2006 19:48 (nineteen years ago)

I shall make Onimo and Aldo and Scotstvo buy me congratulatory pints in their capacity as losers (I don't actually *know* anyone else I beat).

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 7 May 2006 19:50 (nineteen years ago)

I just looked at that Scottish one for the first time this year and realised I've had Freddie Dindeleux in my team all season despite him playing in fucking Belgium!

Onimo (GerryNemo), Sunday, 7 May 2006 19:53 (nineteen years ago)

and that wee fucker Sproule, 37 points before I signed him, 3 after.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Sunday, 7 May 2006 19:55 (nineteen years ago)

I like Stevem's idea, except I think it should have been £1 and fuck teh monthly prizes, they should just give me £1405 now.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 7 May 2006 19:59 (nineteen years ago)

stevem that's pretty much what a few of us do at work (see UCLH vs WCI fite! league) one pound in the kitty per month for the manager of the month - it really does help to make you bother to check your team's progress!

ken c (ken c), Sunday, 7 May 2006 20:39 (nineteen years ago)

13th?! How the fuck did that happen?

I will play properly next year, I promise. Should we play a different Fantasy League next year? I don't think this official Premier League one is much cop really.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 7 May 2006 20:48 (nineteen years ago)

I want a world cup one in the meantime

Porkpie (porkpie), Sunday, 7 May 2006 20:49 (nineteen years ago)

xpost i thought this premier league one is pretty good

ken c (ken c), Sunday, 7 May 2006 21:41 (nineteen years ago)

Should we play a different Fantasy League next year? I don't think this official Premier League one is much cop really.

I quite like it. I was in the BBC one before, and I was better at it (in 01/02 I was in the top ten with about three weeks to go before slumping to 40th or something, despite the fact I was in Italy at the time and only seeing English football on videos of MOTD I got sent out to me once a month), but the scoring system was a bit basic compared to the Premier League one. Also, on the BBC one you could completely change your team each month and then you had six transfers during each month to be made at any time, but there were no 'gameweeks', so you could play Henry on the Saturday and bring in Van Nistelrooy on the Sunday. That's the only thing that was better than the Premier League one - at least if your team was rubbish you knew you could completely change it, whereas with the Premier League one it's a bit like steering a supertanker, it can take months to sort it out.

I want a world cup one in the meantime

Too right.

Teh HoBBler (the pirate king), Sunday, 7 May 2006 21:45 (nineteen years ago)

I do like this official one but they should have better and more regular prizes considering it's official and Budweiser and Barclaycard plough £££s into it.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Sunday, 7 May 2006 21:47 (nineteen years ago)

The Yahoo one is supposed to be quite good. Maybe we should try it (or more than one) for the World Cup.

caek (caek), Sunday, 7 May 2006 21:59 (nineteen years ago)

Ailsa where's me pint
My team: rub; my excuse: "I

http://fifaworldcup.yahoo.com/06/en/060410/1/6iml.html

seems v similar to the prem one. i'm sure we can find lots though :)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 8 May 2006 08:21 (nineteen years ago)

also, curses i was hoping G didn't have henry, as he's pretty much guaranteed the 3 bonus points, but he does...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 8 May 2006 08:24 (nineteen years ago)

i like the curent premierleague one a lot, perhaps some of the stragglers are thinking they cant quite cut it.

they are also doing a world cup one anyway. it starts on monday

charltonlido (gareth), Monday, 8 May 2006 09:11 (nineteen years ago)

I do like this official one but they should have better and more regular prizes considering it's official and Budweiser and Barclaycard plough £££s into it.

steve there probably are some prizes but seeing that the top team for the ILX league is something like 5500th overall it's probably hard for them to give away prizes to us!

ken c (ken c), Monday, 8 May 2006 09:57 (nineteen years ago)

i'm sure they could find a way.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Monday, 8 May 2006 10:04 (nineteen years ago)

also channel 4, of all people:

http://channel4.fantasyleague.com/Article.aspx?id=120

this appears to be based on the bbc one we did for the last world cup...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 8 May 2006 11:55 (nineteen years ago)

I'm ILX's defending world champion, so I am looking forward to the World Cup one. I can't be doing with this fiddling around every week for nine months, but there is less of that in a short tournament - I think last time we only got to change our teams once, right after the group stages.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 8 May 2006 11:58 (nineteen years ago)

i vote for the fantasy.premierleague.com one, it has served us well

charltonlido (gareth), Monday, 8 May 2006 12:24 (nineteen years ago)

I vote for maximum fiddling.

-- Konal Doddz

Yep, by one point.

Teh HoBBler (the pirate king), Monday, 8 May 2006 17:34 (nineteen years ago)

hurrah!

Konal Doddz (blueski), Monday, 8 May 2006 18:58 (nineteen years ago)

The Premier League one for the World Cup appears to have been delayed. It was supposed to launch today (15th) but some time around lunch the blurb changed to "Fantasy Premier League International, where you manage a team selected from Premier League players performing at the FIFA World Cup 2006, will launch this week."

WHAT AREN'T WE BEING TOLD?

Yahoo/FIFA begins on the 18th.

The Metro one is up and running.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 15 May 2006 16:32 (nineteen years ago)

Oh man! Decisions! Options are:

Yahoo/FIFA (May 18)
The Metro (Open)
Channel 4 (May 20)
Premier League (this week)

As far as I can tell, Metro is the only one of these offering (irrelevant) cash prizes. We know and love the Premier League one (although they had technical difficulties this year, and I find this new delay profoundly troubling). There are a couple of votes for it upthread though. Thoughts?

The Premier League one seems to involve just Premiership players playing at the World Cup, rather than being Fantasy World Cup. If that makes a difference.

The Metro one seems to operate roughly the same scoring and rules as the one we've been playing all season.

A friend of mine suggested this one: http://football.ntlworld.com/. Personally I like the look of the yahoo one. The premier league one sounds rubbish.

The Yahoo one suggests your team name should be "if possible, something quirky" which gave me teh fear ("quirky" is on a par with "wacky" and "zany" in terms of words which make me want to inflict pain on people using them), and then suggests using France Ferdinand. Which made me laugh, sadly.

Hey, here's a novel idea. We could play in MORE THAN ONE COMPETITION! More chances of prizes, innit?

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 15 May 2006 21:01 (nineteen years ago)

Porkpie (porkpie), Monday, 15 May 2006 21:13 (nineteen years ago)

ugh, that ntlworld one looks awful

metro looks good

charltonlido (gareth), Monday, 15 May 2006 21:44 (nineteen years ago)

The Premier League one is open.

IT'S DECISION TIME.

My vote is for the Metro one. The rules are exactly the same as the Premier League one (seems to be a copy and paste job), but with cash prizes. What say you?

caek (caek), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 11:08 (nineteen years ago)

i wonder if something like a fantasy knockout cup exists? same rules with scoring, but you have say 32 teams just in a knockout tournament (with several 'byes' in the first round in which you have to beat the average score), and after each round the team with more points win (with an appropriate number of substitutions per round - or you have to pick your squad of 22 at the start!)
