this is the thread where we list stuff that you're not sure whether you're supposed to eat. and then people tell you the answer.

1. prawn shells/tails - i just ate some and they were TASTY (cos they had all the satay sauce i cooked the prawns with on them), but now I fear they will cut up my stomach into little pieces.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 12:22 (twenty years ago)

shit. People say, "Eat Shit" but is that right?

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 12:25 (twenty years ago)

you should try it and report back!!!!!!!

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 12:27 (twenty years ago)

Raw noodles.
Salami skin.

Raston Worrier Robot (alix), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 12:28 (twenty years ago)

raw pasta i think its delicious...and crunchy

battlingspacemonkey (battlingspacemonkey), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 12:29 (twenty years ago)

prawn shells/tails shouldn't do any harm, and are in fact a source of calcium. the main problem is that they're chewy and unpleasant unless cooked very crisply.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 12:30 (twenty years ago)

When I was a student or on the dole, and seriously skint, I'd eat raw pasta when there was nothing else in the cupboard.

I remember the first time my parents ate brie - they thought they had to cut the rind off first.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 12:30 (twenty years ago)

6. Paper. I used to do it all the time as a kid and still snack on it occasionally.

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 12:30 (twenty years ago)

The nettles wrapping the Yarg. I always do, but my friends often cut them off?

Rum, Sodomy and the LAN (kate), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 12:33 (twenty years ago)

FP - but cooking the pasta is no more expensive is it? Apart from in gas/electricity I suppose. Or did you not have cooking equipment?

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 12:33 (twenty years ago)

I've eaten raw pasta too! Well more sucked it till it went soft then ate it.

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 12:34 (twenty years ago)

raw instant noodles are nice and we used to eat them a lot as kids.. (we'd put the msg into the bag and then crunch up the pack of noodles) yummmmym

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 12:34 (twenty years ago)

The nettles are the best bit.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 12:34 (twenty years ago)

Salami skin. -> If you ate the salami, why not the skin? I mean, if you *knew* what salami's made of, you'd not worry much about the skin. ;-)

nathalie's body's designed for two (stevie nixed), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 12:35 (twenty years ago)

x post x post xpost mine wasn't an issue of wealth it was one of crunchy delicious curiosity....yum

pickled eggs?

battlingspacemonkey (battlingspacemonkey), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 12:36 (twenty years ago)

Nettles on Yarg totally edible. Most deli customers took a lot of persuading. It's only vegetables! Much less weird than cheese with wax on it, surely?

Raston Worrier Robot (alix), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 12:36 (twenty years ago)

yeah I've eaten prawn shells alot of the time in a decent restaurant, if they are soft and taste nice they're fine.

as regards brie, a French relative of mine claims he is often reluctant to eat the rind, when eating brie, because it contains chemicals.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 12:36 (twenty years ago)

The wax coating off of Edam cheese - my brother used to tell me it was the best bit

Masked Gazza, Tuesday, 19 July 2005 12:37 (twenty years ago)

when i was about 3/4 i ate a baby bell with the red wax still on....yum never did me any harm, would explain why i later at nursery had a penchant for crayons...

battlingspacemonkey (battlingspacemonkey), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 12:37 (twenty years ago)

in school we used to melt the babybell wrappers and fling them at people/the ceiling

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 12:38 (twenty years ago)

I ate a lot of Playdoh.

Raston Worrier Robot (alix), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 12:38 (twenty years ago)

Playdoh, crayons - been there, done that

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 12:39 (twenty years ago)

I don't like cooked pasta without anything on it - I preferred to crunch the raw stuff.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 12:43 (twenty years ago)

paper, playdoh, crayons, mud, my hair, dry raw pasta, raw carrots, babybel wax, chalk, charcol, rabbit food, hamster chow, catmix, catnip......errrm i was a curious child...

battlingspacemonkey (battlingspacemonkey), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 12:44 (twenty years ago)

gum, as in swallowing it. is it really bad to do this?

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 12:52 (twenty years ago)

kiwi fruit skin. it is hairy, and it doesn't taste particularly nice, but it is a lot easier and less messy to eat a kiwi if you just bite into it and eat the skin. I always used to eat the skins, but then I was told it was bad.

Chewing gum stays in your stomach for 7 years.

Cathy (Cathy), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 13:12 (twenty years ago)

So do marbles.

Raston Worrier Robot (alix), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 13:19 (twenty years ago)

maybe.

Raston Worrier Robot (alix), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 13:19 (twenty years ago)

http://www.snopes.com/oldwives/chewgum.asp

Chewing gum's fine to swallow.

Cressida Breem (neruokruokruokne?), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 13:32 (twenty years ago)

I have a friend who eats kiwi fruit like that. It sets my teeth on edge to watch her do it. When I was little, the girl next door ate raw pasta and also oxo cubes!

Mädchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 13:43 (twenty years ago)

Oh I do that as well - the kiwi fruit thing

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 13:44 (twenty years ago)

An aside: we almost had popcorn a la Neutradol carpet powder the other day, due to the unfortunate resemblance of the packaging to our salt container.

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 13:45 (twenty years ago)

Salt! I used to eat this like sweeties when I was wee.

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 13:47 (twenty years ago)

alba swallows gum all the time

I don't think he even chews it

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 13:48 (twenty years ago)

marbles are okay if you stick em in a cake.

Dadagagmus (blueski), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 13:48 (twenty years ago)

When I was at school working on my Art portfolio I would routinely clean/rinse the brush with my mouth It was quick and the paint tasted metallic, I used Gouache so I'm probably all full of lead or something.

mzui (mzui), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 13:50 (twenty years ago)

Little girl, box of paints, licked her brush and joined the saints.

Mädchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 13:59 (twenty years ago)

(that is an actual poem, I didn't make it up, am not that clever)

Mädchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 13:59 (twenty years ago)

Thanks for scaring me either way :)

mzui (mzui), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 14:00 (twenty years ago)

I used to eat soil.

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 14:00 (twenty years ago)

i eat kiwi fruit like that too. also, pear cores. easier to just eat the whole pear.

juliaaa, Tuesday, 19 July 2005 14:02 (twenty years ago)

Ditto

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 14:04 (twenty years ago)

I second the licking the paintbrush thing. It never seemed weird to me either.

Raston Warrior Robot (alix), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 14:05 (twenty years ago)

6. Paper. I used to do it all the time as a kid and still snack on it occasionally.
-- Dadaismus

I eat loads of paper, Rizla's especially. They fullfill the same function as chewing gum, but I feel better about swallowing them.

Anna (Anna), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 14:08 (twenty years ago)

I saw somebody on telly once who said Kiwi skins are edible and highly nutritious.

Scream! Scrovula, Scream! (noodle vague), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 14:10 (twenty years ago)

in school we used to melt the babybell wrappers and fling them at people/the ceiling

I know people - Japanese only - who ate the wrappers (and cheese). They'd come to me thanking for a lovely breakfast saying how great those Baby Bells were. I really wanted to rofl but didn't.

nathalie's body's designed for two (stevie nixed), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 14:19 (twenty years ago)

nathalie- maybe i am part japanese then? i do look slightly oriental - esp the eyes....and not really like the rest of my family...ohhhhh

Banana skins are rough to eat though....

x-post

battlingspacemonkey (battlingspacemonkey), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 14:21 (twenty years ago)

later we used to make "roses" from the babybell wax, and then launch them ...

battlingspacemonkey (battlingspacemonkey), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 14:22 (twenty years ago)

The white bit inside orange skins

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 14:23 (twenty years ago)

Kiwi skins feel so strangely satisfying in your mouth.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 14:24 (twenty years ago)

Adam In Real Life (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 14:26 (twenty years ago)

paper is so toxic, i cant believe you people do that.

AaronK (AaronK), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 14:27 (twenty years ago)

Burnt toast rocks, esp. with cold butter. Dadaismus, I think we have similar taste buds. Do you ever eat sandwiches made with mayonaise and tikka sauce? Or Laughing Cow triangles with soy sauce poured all over them?

My dad has always said I have the eating habits of a pregnant woman.

Anna (Anna), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 14:27 (twenty years ago)

I think I've said before that my mum used to give my sister and me raw bacon rinds to chew when we were kids. We weren't allowed gum, so this was a kind of consolation. It tasted great!

Mädchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 14:28 (twenty years ago)

Laughing Cow!

Adam In Real Life (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 14:29 (twenty years ago)

I'll try them! (xpost)

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 14:29 (twenty years ago)

Raw sausages! But only the square sliced variety you get in Scotland.

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 14:29 (twenty years ago)

Are you having Laughing Cow nostalgia Adam?

(I also used to eat raw sausage.)

Anna (Anna), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 14:30 (twenty years ago)

I often feel compelled to put tomato ketchup on pizza, not good pizza from a restaurant but the frozen oven pizza kind. it makes it taste so much better!

x-post my enduring memory of Laughing Cow is that in France you got stickers free in packs of Laughing Cow, and I got a picture of a bear stuck to my face, in 1986. One of my earliest memories.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 14:30 (twenty years ago)

Burnt omelettes too! This was the only way my mum could get me to eat eggs!

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 14:31 (twenty years ago)

Weirdest thing I regularly nibble on, probably = weed stems.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 14:32 (twenty years ago)

nathalie- maybe i am part japanese then? i do look slightly oriental - esp the eyes....and not really like the rest of my family...ohhhhh

I didn't mean as a criticism towards Japanese people! Just that I have never had Europeans/Americans eat'em. Maybe Baby Bells don't exist in Japan and they don't realize the red part is the wrapper?

nathalie's body's designed for two (stevie nixed), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 14:33 (twenty years ago)

Wood! I have been know to take the use of toothpicks one stage too far!

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 14:34 (twenty years ago)

I got stickers of Platini and Tigana in La Vache Qui Rit. We stuck them to the cupboard doors in our caravan.

I have been known to gnaw on chicken bones after a roast dinner.

Mädchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 14:36 (twenty years ago)

Bones - yum!

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 14:39 (twenty years ago)

Family holidays in France were so classic.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 14:40 (twenty years ago)

I used to have a thing for chewing McDonalds straws for hours. Not really eating though.

Raston Warrior Robot (alix), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 14:40 (twenty years ago)

Let's recap then: paper, wood, wax, playdoh, crayons, kiwi fruit skin, pear cores, orange skin, salt, raw sausages, animal bones, burnt toast, burnt eggs, burnt anything really

I think it's safe to say that I've overstayed my welcome in the "oral stage".

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 14:41 (twenty years ago)

apple pips
egg shell

(ie i eat both these)

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 14:43 (twenty years ago)

Not even I eat those!

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 14:45 (twenty years ago)

I did used to split open apple seeds to get the almond tasting stuff from inside.

Raston Warrior Robot (alix), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 14:45 (twenty years ago)

There's a condition some people have that drives to eat things which are not s'posed to be eaten (like dirt, paper,...): pica.

nathalie's body's designed for two (stevie nixed), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 14:47 (twenty years ago)

my mum told me egg shell was good for you, and the texture is great to crunch.

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 14:48 (twenty years ago)

The interweb tells me that "people with pica frequently crave and consume nonfood items such as":

dirt
clay
paint chips
plaster
chalk
cornstarch
laundry starch
baking soda
coffee grounds
cigarette ashes
burnt match heads
cigarette butts
feces
ice
glue
hair
buttons
paper
sand
toothpaste
soap

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 14:49 (twenty years ago)

forevermore (a maven) (Matt P), Saturday, 7 September 2013 20:07 (twelve years ago)

i think my real question is: is it even rice paper

1 P.3. Eternal (roxymuzak), Saturday, 7 September 2013 20:08 (twelve years ago)

It could be? Might have to chew it to find out. I'd guess it probably isn't since steam would make rice paper noodle-like.

it's not rice paper, don't eat it

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 8 September 2013 19:05 (twelve years ago)

I've had a load of pomegranate plants growing from seed this summer. Have just had a new shoot come up a couple of days ago, but since weather is getting colder I'm wondering what to do with them.
Most of the seeds I grew came from dropping about half the contents of one bulb on the floor when i was feeling particularly clumsy one night, then had others come from a different bulb I neglected to eat at another point.
Don't want to let them die over the autumn/winter but not sure I can keep them warm enough.

Tried planting some kiwi seeds but not had any results. Do eat the skin with the fruits though does make it much easier. Thought it weird when I saw people scooping out the insides with a spoon then leaving the skin.

Also have some pear and apple seedlings out on the balcony, wondering what to do with them come actual autumn/winter

Stevolende, Sunday, 8 September 2013 20:53 (twelve years ago)

I really like pears, but until not that long ago I thought you had to peel them before eating them so I never bothered.

prawn shells/tails - i just ate some and they were TASTY

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Monday, 9 September 2013 10:32 (twelve years ago)

The only problem I can think of with shrimp/other shells is if one has diverticulitis. My father does, and after a visit to Japan--and the eating of whole shrimps therein--had a massive attach requiring mega antibiotics. If you don't have a fucked up colon, sound OK? If you are into that sort of thing.

I eat more than I am supposed to when it comes to chicken. When I had my own flock, I didn't touch the stuff. However, before I got pet chickens and now that I no longer have then, I eat the dark and white meat and even nibble on the bones a bit too much. It's not like a pear, but almost.
