Hello there everyone

On Friday evening i've booked the upstairs of the Artillery Arms on Bunhill Row for us to meet-up, not just for those of us returning from Liz's funeral, but anyone else who couldn't make it to join us. it's only a ten minute walk from Liverpool Street, less than that from Old Street/Barbican/Moorgate. Any questions email me.

xoxo
Steve

half eleven, stupid time to start london fap thread...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 21:31 (twenty years ago)

there is never a stupid time to start a FAP thread

Porkpie (porkpie), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 21:44 (twenty years ago)

maybe if it's after the event.. and even then

i hope, to make it there
xo

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 22:49 (twenty years ago)

Anyone wishing to walk with Suzy and I from Brentwood to the funeral place, email me. Address below.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 21 July 2005 04:13 (twenty years ago)

I emailed Suzy about it - also forwarded your email to Anna and PinX0r and a couple others who have asked how we are getting there.

Rum, Sodomy and the LAN (kate), Thursday, 21 July 2005 07:21 (twenty years ago)

hello london. looking forward to meeting you, despite circumstances. i give good hug.

dahlin (dahlin), Thursday, 21 July 2005 08:05 (twenty years ago)

i also think it would be quite nice to have a few drinks while we're up there for the benefit of pinxor and others who aren't coming back down to london. i'm not sure if there are any plans for that - rob didn't mention it in his invite.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 21 July 2005 08:08 (twenty years ago)

Whether rob has or hasn't the OS map shows a pub not far from the place.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 21 July 2005 08:10 (twenty years ago)

Yes, I was assuming that, if circustances came to it, we'd decamp to a local pub. Though I admire Carsmile's thinking ahead. I wonder if there'll be parking near the Artillery Arms?

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 21 July 2005 08:17 (twenty years ago)

Ah yes, I see now in the brochure there are two pubs close at hand.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 21 July 2005 08:21 (twenty years ago)

scouring an OS map for pub location... classic

dahlin (dahlin), Thursday, 21 July 2005 08:21 (twenty years ago)

Mark, not before 6:30pm.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 21 July 2005 08:22 (twenty years ago)

Or at least you will have to pay if before 6:30pm.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 21 July 2005 08:22 (twenty years ago)

There seem to be a number of paying car parks round there, assuming a big blue P in a blue square means Parking on Streetmap. And www.NCP.co.uk seems to suggest that they have a place in nearby Bastwick Street.

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 21 July 2005 08:27 (twenty years ago)

i won't be coming as i have an epic stack of work to do and also think this is really for people who actually knew liz, which i didn't other than her posts here. just wanted to say, though, that i've been thinking about you all this past week, when i was away in houston. my best wishes to everyone.

stelf)xxxx, Thursday, 21 July 2005 08:35 (twenty years ago)

there are some parking lots just outside the congestion charge zone as well if you arrive before 6:30pm.

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 21 July 2005 08:53 (twenty years ago)

you'll have to pay them, obv. but at least saving £8

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 21 July 2005 08:54 (twenty years ago)

rob says there will be a drink and some food at the funeral place and we can stay for a couple of hours afterwards, so we don't have to rush back.

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 21 July 2005 08:58 (twenty years ago)

I think this will be for anyone who feels they want to come along, whether they knew Liz IRL or knew her on the internet.

No-one should feel pressured to come if they don't feel it's right, but equally no-one should feel they should stay away if they want to turn up, just because they knew Liz online.

There are tons of people who are important to me who I "only" know online.

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 21 July 2005 09:09 (twenty years ago)

Also meeting people is easy fun, and an obvious next step to "I wish I'd known Liz in real life" = "come see more people in real life".

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 21 July 2005 09:20 (twenty years ago)

Indeed. Tomorrow is not a day to be alone.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 21 July 2005 09:31 (twenty years ago)

Thanks for the thoughts guys, it's very much appreciated. I was unsure whether to attend & have been agonising over it all week. I really wanted to come, but wasn't sure if it was appropriate, but I have definitely decided that I will attend. I am planning to get the train so that I will be able to come back into London, so please don't make any specific plans for my benefit.
Kate, Suzy etc I'm not sure we'll be able to make it at the time you have specified, as we will be getting a bus into Cambridge, a bus to the train station, then the train to kings cross, before we've even thought about Liverpool St & I don't want to hold anyone up, but Kate, I'll let you know in the morning if that's ok?
Also, I know Rob has mentioned that it is informal, so I was wondering what people are wearing. I mainly ask as James is unsure whether or not he should wear a suit.

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 21 July 2005 10:20 (twenty years ago)

I'm going to wear a shirt, but not a suit, possibly a nehru collared jacket if it is cold.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 21 July 2005 10:22 (twenty years ago)

my instinct is to wear the suit, but i'm unsure whether it would stand out as being conspicuous in the informal setting.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 21 July 2005 10:23 (twenty years ago)

Er, I was talking about the FAP there. I don't think anyone should crash the funeral. But surely you'd have been invited, Pink?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 21 July 2005 10:25 (twenty years ago)

I interpret 'informal' as 'suit not required but if you do choose to wear one no offence would be taken'. A few of us are thinking 'suit minus tie' route.

Will be nice to see you Pinkp.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Thursday, 21 July 2005 10:27 (twenty years ago)

my instict is also towards suit, but i don't think others should worry either way. you won't be on your own if you do M.

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 21 July 2005 10:27 (twenty years ago)

i don't think there'll be a problem if some people wear suits

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 21 July 2005 10:27 (twenty years ago)

massed males in clothes nerves shocker

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 21 July 2005 10:28 (twenty years ago)

my suit has been mothed, something I found out when the cars turned up for my grandmother's funeral.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 21 July 2005 10:29 (twenty years ago)

The proposed Suit FAP may yet happen.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Thursday, 21 July 2005 10:29 (twenty years ago)

It's a green burial: WOAD!

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 21 July 2005 10:30 (twenty years ago)

Having looked at the state of my one good suit I am going to be slightly less formal than planned. Still smart though (I hope and pray).

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 21 July 2005 10:31 (twenty years ago)

I will be coming from work, so I will alas be in office clothes. Though I must say, those are somewhat more formal than my regular clothes anyway.

Rum, Sodomy and the LAN (kate), Thursday, 21 July 2005 10:34 (twenty years ago)

Oh I am glad to see clothes nerves elsewhere as well. This thread eases them somewhat.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 21 July 2005 10:39 (twenty years ago)

Marcello - you have mail.

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 21 July 2005 10:39 (twenty years ago)

where is the funeral?

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 21 July 2005 10:46 (twenty years ago)

If that's a real email address, I'll send you the details, Dr C.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Thursday, 21 July 2005 10:48 (twenty years ago)

PP - you have a reply.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 21 July 2005 10:53 (twenty years ago)

it's not. is yours real? I could e-mail you

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 21 July 2005 10:54 (twenty years ago)

Mine is; please do.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Thursday, 21 July 2005 10:54 (twenty years ago)

I was having clothes nerves too. I'm going with full skirt and smart top and ballet flats, since they are the only formal flat shoes I own.

Anna (Anna), Thursday, 21 July 2005 10:59 (twenty years ago)

Is there something that those of us not attending Liz's funeral could do as a mark of respect at a certain time? I know the minutes silence doesn't appeal to everyone but would shutting down the board for an hour or something be an appropriate dignified tribute?

I dunno, I just feel like I'd like to mark the day in some way.

Penelope_111 (Penelope_111), Thursday, 21 July 2005 11:03 (twenty years ago)

Freaky Trigger's already down. Turning off ILX would unduly affect people who've never really heard of her, or if they did it was just on these threads. I can't imagine she'd want that.

You could pick someone at work that's nice but quiet and chat to them for a bit? If you have one, I suppose.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 21 July 2005 11:11 (twenty years ago)

Am I the only one here feeling somewhat uneasy about Andrew's general demeanour on this thread?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 21 July 2005 11:16 (twenty years ago)

Anna, there is a bit of a hike between station and site...I will be doing this hike in trainers and switching to the right shoes when I get there.

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 21 July 2005 11:17 (twenty years ago)

I am uneasy about everything.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Thursday, 21 July 2005 11:21 (twenty years ago)

I don't have a general demeanour, I think. The Woad joke was a very bad idea, and I apologise. My advice to Penelope was quite serious.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 21 July 2005 11:21 (twenty years ago)

'bit of a hike' = several miles, by the look of it. I have two spaces in a car going from Tottenham to the funeral tomorrow, if anyone needs a lift.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 21 July 2005 11:25 (twenty years ago)

I have been making stupid jokes too. It doesn't mean I care less.

Raston Warrior Robot (alix), Thursday, 21 July 2005 11:26 (twenty years ago)

I have to confess, I have imagined a conversation between Liz and the Hippiefynder General. It made me smile to myself and a smile has to be good.

Mädchen (Madchen), Thursday, 21 July 2005 11:29 (twenty years ago)

I think Penelope's idea of finding a way to mark the day is a good one.

A cake-related way would seem appropriate.

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 21 July 2005 11:30 (twenty years ago)

when thinking about what to bring tomorrow - flowers, cards, eh? - i actually considered cake, then thought it might be flippant...

dahlin (dahlin), Thursday, 21 July 2005 11:32 (twenty years ago)

I think flowers would be totally appropriate Dahlin.
I wont be attending the funeral tomorrow, but I will be coming to London in the afternoon & would very much like to meet up with some of you guys & then go on to the FAP in the evening.

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 21 July 2005 11:54 (twenty years ago)

we should be to the pub by 5ish pink.

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 21 July 2005 12:08 (twenty years ago)

I now have a linen suit so I may wear that, or maybe just the trousers.

The walk will be 6km for those joining us.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 21 July 2005 12:11 (twenty years ago)

x-post
Thanks Steve. :-)

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 21 July 2005 12:12 (twenty years ago)

i think you should probably wear a top too, ed

dahlin (dahlin), Thursday, 21 July 2005 12:20 (twenty years ago)

6km ~= 4miles. imperial fans, or just over an hour's worth.

i might do it on the way back when the time's a bit less critical. depends on pubbage and the weather.

koogs (koogs), Thursday, 21 July 2005 12:24 (twenty years ago)

taxis folks, taxis!

dahlin (dahlin), Thursday, 21 July 2005 12:25 (twenty years ago)

I know we can do the walk in an hour, but I'm not sure about being a hot, sweaty rambler in office clothes by the time we get to the funeral.

Rum, Sodomy and the LAN (kate), Thursday, 21 July 2005 12:28 (twenty years ago)

A lot of us will of course be taking taxis from Brentwood station so anyone who attends will probably find they can get a cab in a group back to Brentwood if not from there (all depends on what time people arrive etc.).

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Thursday, 21 July 2005 12:30 (twenty years ago)

> taxis folks, taxis!

that's what struck me about the place's website - was all about green burials but the only instructions on how to get there assumed you were driving.

a bit of walking back seems appropriate, somehow. plus taxis may be easy to find at the station but less easy on the way back.

> hot, sweaty rambler in office clothes

works for me 8)

koogs (koogs), Thursday, 21 July 2005 12:32 (twenty years ago)

Mobile phones are wonderful things when it comes to cabs.

But walk back could well feel appropriate.

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 21 July 2005 12:33 (twenty years ago)

I've left just under 2 hrs for walking.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 21 July 2005 12:33 (twenty years ago)

You can't really do 'green burials' right by railways though I suppose. I probably spend about a single hour in cars within a twelve month period now.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Thursday, 21 July 2005 12:47 (twenty years ago)

BRING BACK THE NECROPOLIS RAILWAY!!!

Rum, Sodomy and the LAN (kate), Thursday, 21 July 2005 12:49 (twenty years ago)

What was the actual route of the Necropolis railway?

Raston Warrior Robot (alix), Thursday, 21 July 2005 12:50 (twenty years ago)

I can't remember! I have a great book about it, though. I think it went from near Waterloo to places Southwest. (And spooky.)

Rum, Sodomy and the LAN (kate), Thursday, 21 July 2005 12:51 (twenty years ago)

It went to brookwood from waterloo, didn't it?

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 21 July 2005 13:09 (twenty years ago)

POSSIBLY TOO MUCH INFORMATION. Got this from http://www.tbcs.org.uk/railway.htm which has some nice photos too. >

An unusual feature of Brookwood Cemetery was that it had its own private railway running through the grounds. The main reason for this was that the Cemetery was over 25 miles from central London, and the only convenient method of transporting coffins and mourners was by the London & South Western Railway. The funeral trains began to operate from 13 November 1854 when the Cemetery opened to the public.

A private Necropolis terminus was provided just outside Waterloo station. The original station (1854-1902) was located between York Street (now Leake Street) and the Westminster Bridge Road. This station was replaced by a more extensive building in 1902. This was due to the complete reconstruction of Waterloo Station. The original terminus was demolished at about this time.

The new station was located at 121 Westminster Bridge Road and continued to provide railway funeral traffic until the station was bombed on the night of 16-17th April 1941. More information about the destruction of the London station may be found on The Historyplace Website. The terminus was never rebuilt after the Second World War although the entrance at 121 still survives.

The funeral trains ran from this private station, down the railway company's main line, and was then reversed into the Cemetery grounds at Brookwood. The trains ran once a day, assuming that funerals were booked to take place. The Sunday service ceased after October 1900. Thereafter the trains operated largely on an "as required" basis. By the 1930s they were running at most twice a week. The service was never reinstated after the Second World War, and the track in the Cemetery was removed c1947-48.

In the Cemetery grounds two private stations were provided, one for each main portion of the burial ground. "North" station served the Nonconformist sections (nearest the main railway line), whilst "South" station served the Anglican sections (close to the A322). After calling at North Station, the railway crossed Cemetery pales (the road which runs through the Cemetery grounds) on a level crossing.

North Station was demolished sometime in the 1960s due to dry rot. South Station survived as the "South Bar", providing refreshments to visitors until it was closed in c.1967. The building was burned down in September 1972.

The trackbed of the railway may still be followed through the grounds, and the Society organises guided walks following this route during the course of the year.

You can read more about the cemetery railway in an article by Paul Slade and there is another article here. Radio 4 will be broadcasting a thirty minute documentary "One Way to the Necropolis" on the cemetery railway on Monday 7th February 2005 at 8.30pm. You may still be able to hear this via the Radio 4 website.

My book, "The Brookwood Necropolis Railway" gives a more detailed history of the cemetery railway. It was published by Oakwood Press but is currently out of print. A new edition is in preparation.

Raston Warrior Robot (alix), Thursday, 21 July 2005 13:19 (twenty years ago)

Ah, that sounds like an interesting book. But the one I have is fiction, called The Necropolis Railroad. It was about murders on the train to the cemetary! (Convenient, eh?)

Rum, Sodomy and the LAN (kate), Thursday, 21 July 2005 13:21 (twenty years ago)

Woking wouldn't exist if it weren't for the Necropolis Railway.

*a zillion commuters cheer*

Mädchen (Madchen), Thursday, 21 July 2005 14:27 (twenty years ago)

paul weller cheers!

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 21 July 2005 14:29 (twenty years ago)

Cemetery Pales, world's scariest road (for Surrey teenagers)
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/streetmap.dll?G2M?X=495497&Y=156642&A=Y&Z=1

Mädchen (Madchen), Thursday, 21 July 2005 14:31 (twenty years ago)

That map doesn't show how it runs right through the middle of the cemetery - This one's better. Also, it has high walls on either side.

Mädchen (Madchen), Thursday, 21 July 2005 14:36 (twenty years ago)

Sorry, back to FAP. I won't be wearing shoes for walking I'm afraid, but I have a lift.

Mädchen (Madchen), Thursday, 21 July 2005 14:37 (twenty years ago)

Ooh, did you used to walk past it and then after a bit, sprint for your life?

Raston Warrior Robot (alix), Thursday, 21 July 2005 14:38 (twenty years ago)

We had a thread about that book, the fiction one. I read it. It was like Thomas the Tank Engine for grown-ups.

The Necropolis Railway C/D

It is redolent of a happier age. The thread, I mean.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Thursday, 21 July 2005 14:39 (twenty years ago)

No, we'd drive down it at a hundred miles an hour. I'll tell you the spooky story about the motorcyclist and his 'pillion' tomorrow.

Mädchen (Madchen), Thursday, 21 July 2005 14:41 (twenty years ago)

I'm in a suit and tie tomorrow. I guess I'm traditional in that way, and also, I should appear the way she usually saw me.

BARMS, Thursday, 21 July 2005 14:46 (twenty years ago)

I don't think I can even come to the pub, due to landlord cobblers.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Thursday, 21 July 2005 15:36 (twenty years ago)

This is why you should never get your shoes fixed by publicans.

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 21 July 2005 15:42 (twenty years ago)

OPh yeah, sorry, that was a bit confused.

We are due to meet our old landlords with a view to getting our deposit back. I would prefer to be in the pub. Or rather, I would prefer to see you lot tomorrow, seeing as I can't go to the funeral.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Thursday, 21 July 2005 15:50 (twenty years ago)

Due to unforeseen circumstances (i.e. Madchen losing her passport and not being able to get on a plane and having to drive and needing the company of an insured driver) I am now coming down for the funeral, thanks to my wonderful boss and his ability to allow me time off at stupidly short notice. I shall be up for fappage, and possibly looking for somewhere to stay.

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 21 July 2005 17:07 (twenty years ago)

If someone could forward me details of the funeral, I 'd really appreciate it, because I feel like I should attend (unless it's a private thing).

Email address below.

grraham (noodles is a cunt), Thursday, 21 July 2005 17:11 (twenty years ago)

(ok, got them)

grraham (noodles is a cunt), Thursday, 21 July 2005 17:53 (twenty years ago)

Can someone forward them to me too, please?

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 21 July 2005 19:55 (twenty years ago)

Done.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 21 July 2005 19:59 (twenty years ago)

Got. This might be a bit of a way out for me, but I'll see how it goes - will definitely come to the pub in any case.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 21 July 2005 20:13 (twenty years ago)

It will be nice to meet Ailsa, I think.

I will be going to the pub, probably leaving fairly early (as usual).

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Friday, 22 July 2005 06:41 (twenty years ago)

I was seriously considering coming up for the pub meet, but I have woken up with Teh Pox From Beyond. Sickness, diahorrea and teh flu (or at least all the big sypmtoms).

"Ah yes", said my boss, "I had it earlier in the week and it was a struggle getting into work." Thanks a bunch for giving it to me you wanker.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Friday, 22 July 2005 06:45 (twenty years ago)

"Ah yes", said my boss, "I had it earlier in the week and it was a struggle getting into work."

What a trouper!

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Friday, 22 July 2005 07:11 (twenty years ago)

He's never quite grasped the reason you go off sick is to avoid passing round Teh Lurgy.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Friday, 22 July 2005 07:15 (twenty years ago)

I AM GOING TO THE PUB NOW. YOU MAY WISH TO JOIN ME, EARLY DOORS. I AM GOING TO WALK IT.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Friday, 22 July 2005 14:16 (twenty years ago)

I AM GOING TO WALK BECAUSE OTHERWISE I WOULD BE TOO EARLY DOORS.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Friday, 22 July 2005 14:23 (twenty years ago)

To everyone tonight, my very best. I have been thinking of you this week.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 22 July 2005 15:21 (twenty years ago)

all I can say is ouchie after going home and drinking Whisky til god knows when.

well done London

Porkpie (porkpie), Saturday, 23 July 2005 06:43 (twenty years ago)

I wasn't there but I raised a glass

Rachel Mc (Badgerkitten), Saturday, 23 July 2005 08:35 (twenty years ago)

Was that the biggest FAP ever? Liz would have been proud.

Good to meet Ailsa and Dahlin for the first time, and see Ally C, Madchen, Archel and Mr Archel again. And the rest of you, obviously.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Saturday, 23 July 2005 22:34 (twenty years ago)

Er, what time did you leave at, Matt?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Saturday, 23 July 2005 23:59 (twenty years ago)

A bit before 11, I think. Had to get up early for a friend's stag the following day so thought it best to be sensible and go home.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 24 July 2005 07:25 (twenty years ago)

likewise, matt. tho i'm afraid i didn't get to talk to you much! apologies...
or perhaps i should be apologising those to whom i DID speak at length... I'm sure much of it was drivel.
it was lovely to meet you all tho, regardless. and it will undoubtedly provide startling new insight into many posts, and appreciation for ILX gossip. ooooh exciting.
i shall endeavour to try london more in the future

dahlin (dahlin), Sunday, 24 July 2005 14:15 (twenty years ago)

It is worth it, it is!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 24 July 2005 15:12 (twenty years ago)

It will be nice to meet Ailsa, I think.

-- PJ Miller

I am so sorry for looking really baffled and gormless when we were introduced. I think I thought you were someone else, and I was quite drunk. Unless that wasn't you. Erm, booze + two hours sleep and an eight hour drive = ruin.

Despite circumstances, it was really nice to meet everyone that I hadn't met before (Anna, Kate, Suzy, Ed, MattDC, Stevem, Martin S, The Lex, Marianna, WBS, Toby, Colette, Andrew F, Dave B, PJ Miller, Marcello, Mark S, Tom, Magnus, Barima, Mr Archel, erm, some other people, probably, please don't be offended if I forgot you, my memory is rubbish and, erm, I was drunk), and I apologise profusely for being quite drunk. Though not as drunk as The Lex, who was very drunk indeed.

The rest of you, it was equally lovely to see you again, and I'm not apologising for being drunk as you should be used to it by now.

Special thanks to Starry's B&B, and massive apologies once more to Starry, Tim and Dahlin for being rubbish and inconveniencing them all.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 24 July 2005 21:58 (twenty years ago)

I knew I would forget someone. Sorry, SGS, I forgot you. I really didn't mean it x

I had this really odd feeling all day that I knew everyone, because I recognised faces and knew people who knew the people who I didn't actually really know, and I get confused and I'm talking shit. But I kept thinking thinks like "oh, there's Matt DC", "there's Martin Skidmore" etc before realising that I've never actually met these people and they have no idea what I even look like because I'm not daft enough to post photos.

Also, sorry to everyone I didn't say goodbye to. I sort of assumed we'd meet up again on Saturday. And the people I said I would get in touch with on Saturday, I'm sorry I didn't but plans arose and, erm, drink was involved. Again.

There *will* be a next time.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 24 July 2005 22:26 (twenty years ago)

I don't remember very much of the night at all, and am not entirely sure how much of it I want to be reminded of, but I do remember meeting Ailsa, and very nice that was too.

Lovely to see so many people! Apologies to anyone I fell on to.

The Lex (The Lex), Sunday, 24 July 2005 22:52 (twenty years ago)

and am not entirely sure how much of it I want to be reminded of

Very little is the answer there. Goth.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 25 July 2005 00:45 (twenty years ago)

Though it is a little odd that the thread had got this far without anyone saying "Hey, remember that bit when Graham assaulted Colette and got thrown out of the pub? What a cunt!"

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 25 July 2005 00:52 (twenty years ago)

This begs the question.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 25 July 2005 05:30 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I think maybe people were trying to remember it being a *good* night, i.e. blocking that bit out of the collective memory (I know I was). Thanks Andrew.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 25 July 2005 06:04 (twenty years ago)

Ailsa is very kind to think of people's feelings but Colette's self-defence classes were A LONG TIME COMING and I suspect a highlight of the night for quite a few London women there.

It was lovely to meet Ailsa, Pink and Dahlin for the first time, as was it nice to meet Pink's James and Mr. Archel. I'll elaborate more, later...

suzy (suzy), Monday, 25 July 2005 06:17 (twenty years ago)

The only thing I really remember of the evening was arriving, post-walk, just in time to see them lock the gates of Bunhill Fields. :-(

After that the grog took over. My apologies to everyone whose drinks I forgot. I told you I was bad at buying rounds. Apologies to anyone I babbled at in an incoherant state. Good to see old friends; Liz would have been proud indeed at the attendance. Nice to meet some of you for the first time - especially Ailsa and Mr. Archel!

Rum, Sodomy and the LAN (kate), Monday, 25 July 2005 06:29 (twenty years ago)

Thankfully I'd gone home before that particular coda to the day. But for me the evening was ruined by Graham. It is extremely difficult to try to conduct conversations with people when someone is standing, mute, at your shoulder for virtually the entire evening, occasionally slamming down their pint, rushing out and rushing back in five minutes later. I am currently trying to acclimatise myself to the FAP environment again after a long absence, and this sort of thing does not help at all.

I think the Graham issue needs to be addressed urgently. If we're going to have an FAP environment in which everyone is going to feel comfortable, or one where everyone is going to be made to feel uncomfortable by the behaviour of one mentally disturbed individual, then AFAIC it's no contest.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 25 July 2005 06:38 (twenty years ago)

It was nice to meet Ailsa, although it is true that she looked at me a bit gone out. I don't blame you, Ailsa.

I had about 74 pints.

It was nice to see everybody that I saw. Some people were there that I didn't know they were there, and some people were there that I did know but didn't so much as say hello to when I probably really ought to have done but I didn't. I am particularly thinking of Playforth-no more Archel, Mrs.

I enjoyed talking about Aston Villa. Jim sounded more and more Brummie as the conversation progressed.

I am sorry I missed the kung fu. I did think it was quite likely that someone would fall through the window eventually.

Getting home is rubbish, it really harshed my buzz.

Also I would like to say that I am proud to be associated with most of you, I just wish it was by some means less embarrassing than the internet. Can we make up some kind of story?

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Monday, 25 July 2005 06:42 (twenty years ago)

How about we say it's a secret SAS reunion and Mark S is Chris Ryan.

Ed (dali), Monday, 25 July 2005 06:43 (twenty years ago)

Though it is a little odd that the thread had got this far without anyone saying "Hey, remember that bit when Graham assaulted Colette and got thrown out of the pub? What a cunt!"

?!?!?

nathalie's body's designed for two (stevie nixed), Monday, 25 July 2005 06:45 (twenty years ago)

I was thinking about you all on Friday night when we had our own FAP :)

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 25 July 2005 06:50 (twenty years ago)

I'm sorry, Marcello, but it's really a bit rich of you to comment on Graham's "mentally disturbed" behaviour. You yourself have been just as bad in the past, (perhaps bar throwing drinks) albeit for more understandable reasons. As indeed have *I* myself. You have been given second and third chances - as I have myself after making various drunken spectacles of myself.

I'm not making excuses for Graham's behaviour. I tried to give him the benefit of the doubt and found myself disappointed. I know that he has behaved appallingly towards other ILX0rs in the past - but then again, so have I. And I was cured of my intolerable behaviour by the acceptance and understanding of others, not by more condemnation and isolation.

I am willing to listen to a discussion if it is opened by Colette, or anyone else he is wronged. But on this issue, Marcello, I believe that you should forgive others their trespasses as you wish to be forgiven.

Rum, Sodomy and the LAN (kate), Monday, 25 July 2005 06:50 (twenty years ago)

He has wronged.

Sorry, haven't had my coffee yet.

Rum, Sodomy and the LAN (kate), Monday, 25 July 2005 06:57 (twenty years ago)

Look, I have given him innumerable chances. I've tried being nice to Graham, I've held my tongue during his multiple freakouts on these boards in the past, I even spoke with him on Friday. But this sort of behaviour is totally unacceptable. He has been given every conceivable last-ditch opportunity by us to prove himself in a social situation, to connect with our world, and I don't see how physically assaulting other ILxors justifies "acceptance" or "understanding" or indeed anything other than zero tolerance.

FAPs are not the Priory. He should go and get proper treatment for his condition and come back only when he demonstrates at least a minimum capability to interact positively with others. Why should everyone else's evening be spoiled because of misplaced sympathy for one disturbed person (I could say "stalker freak" but that would exacerbate the problem)?

Yes I'm being hard. And perhaps I've been a past offender. But I have never resorted to violence at FAPs, and for me that's a barrier which should never be crossed.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 25 July 2005 07:03 (twenty years ago)

In fact when have I even started an argument at an FAP? If I'm feeling low I don't talk to anyone and slope off fairly quickly, or more likely am wise enough not to attend FAPs at all. That's hardly in the same category.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 25 July 2005 07:06 (twenty years ago)

(I think it is important not to let whatever happened obscure the purpose of the evening, and how people rose to the occasion. Perhaps we could have an "Is Graham Mental?" thread, before this one goes haywire. Please note, I have never tried to influence the path a thread takes before.)

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Monday, 25 July 2005 07:08 (twenty years ago)

It's an important issue, though, because I'm sure I'm not the only one here who is likely to be put off going to future FAPs for fear of a troublemaker turning up.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 25 July 2005 07:09 (twenty years ago)

it was really nice, to see everyone, in that FAP. i stayed downstairs for the latter part of the evening, and stayed pretty sober. it sounds like it was pretty exciting upstairs though!

i got drunk the next day. (non-violently i think, except when i assaulted an mussel shell)

ken c (ken c), Monday, 25 July 2005 07:19 (twenty years ago)

i'll protect you marcello, if anyone tries to assault you at a FAP. don't be put off.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 25 July 2005 07:21 (twenty years ago)

Marcello, I repeat - that is a thread for Colette to start, if she feels threatened.

(However, after having been myself forgiven for a drunken and imappropriate outburst a few weeks ago, I suspect that Colette is actually a bigger person than that.)

Rum, Sodomy and the LAN (kate), Monday, 25 July 2005 07:22 (twenty years ago)

Well, suppose I feel threatened? Why should I make the effort to socialise with people I actually like and get on with if it's going to be disrupted by a maniac? No, I'm sorry, I don't have to put up with this when I socialise with non-ILx friends and I'm not going to put up with it in the context of an FAP.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 25 July 2005 07:27 (twenty years ago)

Then I say that, based on your multiple past behaviour *ON* ILX that you, Marcello, are a hypocrite.

Rum, Sodomy and the LAN (kate), Monday, 25 July 2005 07:28 (twenty years ago)

Perhaps this is not the appropriate thread for this discussion.

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Monday, 25 July 2005 07:28 (twenty years ago)

You're right, Pink. I am now withdrawing.

Rum, Sodomy and the LAN (kate), Monday, 25 July 2005 07:29 (twenty years ago)

So let me get this straight, Kate - you approve of people acting like a cunt towards other people in pubs and assaulting them like a common-or-garden thug because you think we should make an effort to "accept" and "understand" such behaviour?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 25 July 2005 07:33 (twenty years ago)

i think acting like a cunt anywhere is unacceptable.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 25 July 2005 07:35 (twenty years ago)

pinx0r and i were drinking like common-or-garden thugs i think (mmmm cheap wine and beer)

ken c (ken c), Monday, 25 July 2005 07:37 (twenty years ago)

Cheap? Did you go to the offie?

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Monday, 25 July 2005 07:38 (twenty years ago)

Well, I had fun.

BARMS, Monday, 25 July 2005 07:40 (twenty years ago)

it sounds like it was a great send-off.

I took Andrew's advice and had a button-bursting amount of cake as my tribute to Liz over the weekend.

Penelope_111 (Penelope_111), Monday, 25 July 2005 07:42 (twenty years ago)

Really upset I couldn't make it! :(

beanz (beanz), Monday, 25 July 2005 07:48 (twenty years ago)

I ate at a patisserie yesterday! She'd've approved.

BARMS, Monday, 25 July 2005 07:49 (twenty years ago)

pinx0r and i were drinking like common-or-garden thugs i think (mmmm cheap wine and beer)
Now I know my memory of the evening is somewhat hazy, but Ken, I'm lost!

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Monday, 25 July 2005 07:50 (twenty years ago)

Yeah - really, it was a great time. FAPs are really not the Priory in every possible connotation. Liz would have also approved heartily of Cafe Konstam's HYOOGE eggs Benedict, and also bumping into old friend I hadn't seen in ages who joined us at table. I also tried to find a battered meatball over the weekend but chippy was closed.

*massages sore heid all day Saturday*

suzy (suzy), Monday, 25 July 2005 07:52 (twenty years ago)

I think it is important not to let whatever happened obscure the purpose of the evening

I see what you're saying, but I think you're about 60 hours too late. A lot of people will find it hard to remember Liz's funeral without also remembering what happened after. Not that it will obscure what was a great FAP, but it was still absolutely the wrong thing at the wrong time.

Kate, are you saying that the only people with an opinion on things like this (insofar as there are things like this) are the ones who have been attacked? They're hardly the only ones affected.

However, after having been myself forgiven for a drunken and imappropriate outburst a few weeks ago, I suspect that Colette is actually a bigger person than that.

Question-begging language aside, it's my impression that you could not be more wrong.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 25 July 2005 07:57 (twenty years ago)

On a further positive tip: It was great to meet PJ Miller, Ailsa, Dahlin and Madchen, as well as non-ILXors Jim and Robin. And David Moore (who is as lovely as everyone says). Also great to meet the people who weren't at Glastonbury, who I haven't seen for various values of forever. I completely missed saying hello to Archel and Mr. Archel, because I'm too dim to recognise them.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 25 July 2005 08:05 (twenty years ago)

Suzy has now clued me in depth regarding the relevant events on Friday night. As I say, I left before all of this happened, and I had felt that, despite G's presence, it had been a good day (or as good a day as a funeral can be, I guess) and an important one for me in terms I don't really need to spell out - but coming back this morning and finding out what had happened has put something of a black mark on the whole thing. I suppose it's just as well Rob wasn't around at the time, come to think of it.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 25 July 2005 08:07 (twenty years ago)

Well, we left at about half nine, everyone was very drunk and getting drunker, so my memories (of the FAP) will be only joyful ones. (Except as usual I should have talked to more people.)

Tom (Groke), Monday, 25 July 2005 08:09 (twenty years ago)

There was always going to be some form of argument or the like when we went to the pub, and strange as it may sound, it could have been a much worse outcome (sorry colette, I know it's easy for me to say)

grief and emotion plus booze will always = badness of some form or another eventually. Luckily it was at the end of the night, and it didn't even spoil people's moods, or at least the moods of people I was around (though I did miss the action and only heard about it afterwards)

All in all, I'd like to think that Liz would have been tickled pink by her send off, even the little set to at the end of the night.

Vicky (Vicky), Monday, 25 July 2005 08:21 (twenty years ago)

Well no, it seems to be the case that FAP + Graham = badness of some form or another eventually. I didn't notice anyone else causing trouble. I did bear witness to the Kate/Colette contretemps a couple of weeks ago, but that was just drunken yelling and didn't escalate to violence. And as we all know, this isn't the first time G has tried it at an FAP.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 25 July 2005 08:32 (twenty years ago)

Vicky OTM, I would say. More later.

Archel (Archel), Monday, 25 July 2005 08:33 (twenty years ago)

Right. Wow, I had a really great time despite wanting to cry a lot. I've just been writing a long... not sure what it is... about Liz, and I was just thinking that she would have been proud at the level of ruin achieved.

It was great to see people what I have not seen for ages: Ailsa, Madeleine, Nick, Tim, Stacey, Stevie, Jim, Ally, Lucy, Ben, Rachel... what a way to meet again, but you're all great and I AM going to see you again in better circs, mark my words...

Mr Archel apologises for any drunkeness, but I'm just glad that he got to talk to people when I was probably being a crap nostalgia queen and not doing my duty re the introductions.

Sorry we didn't get to speak to everyone. I was really feeling the love in that room, what happened later notwithstanding.

Archel (Archel), Monday, 25 July 2005 08:44 (twenty years ago)

Was Mr Archel as, um, merry as he seemed on the way to Clapham junction, Archel? He really is a sweetie (albeit prone to bluntness rather when drunk ;)).

Also, I forgot to pay the fucking congestion charge. Fuck. Should I try and pay it now, or way till I get the fine?

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 25 July 2005 09:02 (twenty years ago)

Mr Archel was fun! I want to see him drunk more often. I'm sorry I didn't speak to so many people and that I forgot I'd already met Matt DC. I am also sorry for the Overworked Postman and that we didn't remind Mark C to pay his congestion charge. I love that Suzy was typical Suzy - "they've run out of loo roll"/"I have some tissues if you want"/"no way, it's their job to replace it and I'm going to make them!" and I meant to tell Ed his suit looked great, but forgot so there it is. Actually, all the chaps in suits looked teh hott. Miller, sorry for being cheeky and asking you about how you eat sandwiches. Emma, I meant to say that I like your hair. There were other things I was going to say to people but I can't remember them just now. However, I will repeat that I hope we one day have a happy occasion which will give us the excuse to FAP Large again. It were good.

Mädchen (Madchen), Monday, 25 July 2005 09:06 (twenty years ago)

I was dressed as the bad guy, but I was not the bad guy.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Monday, 25 July 2005 09:07 (twenty years ago)

Very pleased with the £99 suit.

Ed (dali), Monday, 25 July 2005 09:09 (twenty years ago)

Your congestion charge excuse is as follows:
Youw ere going to a funeral of someone in the blasts, the rubbish shooting at Stockwell happened and all the tube was up the spout hence you had to get there by any means necessary.
Appeal when you get the fine is the usual route I think. Mentiont he evening standard.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 25 July 2005 09:09 (twenty years ago)

Haha I was the only person (or at least the first) to be enough of a sad crossword geek to immediately blurt out keenly 'how many letters?' to Lucy's joke.

Sorry about the congestion charge M and thanks for the heroic driving (and even more heroic swearing) all day. Yes, Matt was drunk in the line of duty. He had to work the next day as well poor dear.

Archel (Archel), Monday, 25 July 2005 09:19 (twenty years ago)

That's perfectly OK, Madchen. There was quite a lot of cheekiness coming my way, now you come to mention it.

It's so easy to forget to pay the congestion charge, Markelby.

But surely you didn't get there until it had finished for the day?

I tried to work out how much money that pub made out of us.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Monday, 25 July 2005 09:23 (twenty years ago)

Haha I was the only person (or at least the first) to be enough of a sad crossword geek to immediately blurt out keenly 'how many letters?' to Lucy's joke.

I spent about five minutes going 'duuuhhhhhh...' before she completed the joke for me, sob.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Monday, 25 July 2005 09:26 (twenty years ago)

Who was on it on our table who provided the set-up for Lucy's punchline? Was it you, Vicky?

PJM and I were the first to the pub (walking past Smithfield and the Barbican - the first time in perhaps six years I'd been in that neighborhood), having not gone to Brentwood (having elected not to go myself, I made the terrible error of not passing on the details, assuming - on no basis whatsoever - that he'd feel the same way); each fresh wave of faces through the door was a sad delight ("How long has it been...?").

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Monday, 25 July 2005 09:28 (twenty years ago)

Vicky (Vicky), Monday, 25 July 2005 09:35 (twenty years ago)

(I can't remember the joke. All I can remember is not understanding it.)

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Monday, 25 July 2005 09:36 (twenty years ago)

(Michael has just told me the joke. It wasn't all that complicated. Perhaps it was something else I didn't understand.)

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Monday, 25 July 2005 09:46 (twenty years ago)

Matt and I are thinking of stealing the phrase 'overworked postmen' to be the name of our new crossword club that we keep meaning to start. Mainly we will be sitting in pubs.

Archel (Archel), Monday, 25 July 2005 09:46 (twenty years ago)

From across the room I watched Madchen tell that joke to Pete--a moment of joy.

sgs (sgs), Monday, 25 July 2005 09:49 (twenty years ago)

sorry about the congestion charge mark! but yeah appeal for it.. hey, who knows maybe the camera didn't get you either. the pub being just inside the zone (where did you park it?)

ken c (ken c), Monday, 25 July 2005 09:50 (twenty years ago)

I parked on Chiswell Street, and entered the zone about 15 mins before it stopped charging. Forgetting to pay it was just unforgiveable.

I idn't realise you could appeal. I might try it even though, really, I done the blag.

(which reminds me of the best joke I ever told. I was watching AFCW vs Metropolitan Police, and the Met brought on a blonde substitute. I immediately shouted "It's a fair cop!" to general hilarity. Go me!)

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 25 July 2005 09:58 (twenty years ago)

That's the beauty of small crowds.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Monday, 25 July 2005 09:59 (twenty years ago)

i'm going to be trying london more in august. i shall be attending the sugar thing. you should go too!

dahlin (dahlin), Monday, 25 July 2005 10:18 (twenty years ago)

Does anyone know the actual date for August Poptimism?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 25 July 2005 10:20 (twenty years ago)

I missed Dahlin and Pinky Panther.

I want to start a club called Drossimism.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Monday, 25 July 2005 10:23 (twenty years ago)

Is that named after Ed and Jazzer's band in the archers?

Ed (dali), Monday, 25 July 2005 10:24 (twenty years ago)

Did they beat me to it?

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Monday, 25 July 2005 10:25 (twenty years ago)

I nearly missed Pinky Panther. At the funeral I asked Martin if she'd turned up and it turned out she was standing bang next to me!

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 25 July 2005 10:26 (twenty years ago)

1. i was the stooge for the overworked postman joke at the far corner table

2. august poptimism is Friday 19th

3. i'm not even going to think about how much the artillery made out of us, but also i feel sad that i didn't say thank you on the way out

4. thank you everyone for coming :)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 25 July 2005 10:34 (twenty years ago)

I was convinced I saw TISSP! but I obviously saw some sort of TISSPalike, bah.

Tim (Tim), Monday, 25 July 2005 10:41 (twenty years ago)

It was nice to see everyone, as ever.

Ally C (Ally C), Monday, 25 July 2005 15:41 (twenty years ago)

I was the saddo that asked the question to set Madchen up for her joke in the pub on Saturday, having managed to avoid it all day on Friday (I think after being stuck in a car with me for eight hours, she was maybe sick of the sight of me by the time we got to the pub).

I think we did Liz proud on Friday night. I have been to a couple of wakes which degenerate rapidly into ruin and silliness on the grounds that "it's what (s)he would have wanted". That seemed especially true on Friday. Maudlin-ness would have hurt too much, I'd been through a lot of that in the afternoon (a lovely and fitting occasion, though) and after it, a release was needed. And gallons of wine and a bunch of friendly and welcoming mentalists provided just that.

But can someone please get married or something so we can do it for a much happier reason next time?

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 25 July 2005 15:50 (twenty years ago)

Hm. I could marry all of you, I suppose, but that would be involved.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 25 July 2005 16:47 (twenty years ago)

Move to Utah, Ned. Your hair seems kind of polygamist anyway.

Leon C. (Ex Leon), Monday, 25 July 2005 16:51 (twenty years ago)

Renew your vows?

Lara (Lara), Monday, 25 July 2005 16:56 (twenty years ago)

Leon, I fear the Mormons would say something about my sinful ways and that would be the end of me (I believe the hair would escape on its own to found a new underwater life form). However, if I could convert the ridiculously beautiful landscape around Logan, Utah into NedWorld (free admission, just bring good food to share), then this could be a fine approach.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 25 July 2005 16:57 (twenty years ago)

what do you do that's sinful ned? you don't FORNICATE do you?

dahlin (dahlin), Monday, 25 July 2005 20:12 (twenty years ago)

I just remembered I made a really really foolish mistake of mentioning horrible work-related issues in front of the trade union triumvirate of Dave B, Pete and Carsmile. The whole of London must have been lit up with the collective gleam in their eyes "whoo, we can talk about trade unions! and employment rights!" What a golden opportunity I presented them with. I hope it was appreciated.

About half way up the M6 on Sunday it occurred to me that I had missed the perfect opportunity to harangue Dave B in person about the lack of streaking through the streets of Liverpool I have been harrassing him about online for about two months.
