g-d rich people!

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 21 July 2005 18:03 (twenty years ago)

g-d a-holes!
(i just wanted to say that. and mean it.) yaaaay for our new thread.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 21 July 2005 18:04 (twenty years ago)

It has that new thread smell.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Thursday, 21 July 2005 18:05 (twenty years ago)

I'm just bitter right now because this one lady I work with is SO ANNOYING. She grew up with money and loves to tell little stories about it. Like, apparently, when she was 10 her mom said to her and her brothers and sisters, "My darling children, I have done everything within our means to get you everything you have ever asked for. Is there anything that you ever wanted that I didn't give you?" And so they all made lists and she cried and said she'd been a bad mother and gave them everything they'd asked for. Great story! The same lady said she thinks one of the realtors should be fired because he can't afford an Armani suit. How can he expect anyone to respect him?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 21 July 2005 18:06 (twenty years ago)

again, g-d rich people!

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 21 July 2005 18:08 (twenty years ago)

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Thursday, 21 July 2005 18:11 (twenty years ago)

is that woman for real?!?! i cannot fathom people like that actually exist. i am in denial!

kelsey (kelstarry), Thursday, 21 July 2005 18:12 (twenty years ago)

These threads grow up so FAST. *sniff*

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 21 July 2005 18:13 (twenty years ago)

One of my favorite things since moving to the city is comparing the "rich people" of my home town to the "rich people" here, and realizing over and over what a bunch of self-important, spoiled fucks both groups of them are. Which is worse, the small-town rich folk or the big city rich folk?

xpost kelsey: They're all too real: there was a family whose kids I grew up with that did the same thing.

dan m (OutDatWay), Thursday, 21 July 2005 18:14 (twenty years ago)

I love that touching story about her mother buying her love. I'm so moved.

Personally, I prefer Jamie Fox's story about his grandmother beating him.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Thursday, 21 July 2005 18:15 (twenty years ago)

sarah, maybe you should tell that annoying co-worker that you had a bad mother b/c she never gave you things. tell her in GREAT DETAIL about the things she never gave you (but list things that you might like now. how about a new amp, for example [i have no idea if you need/use one]). let her take pity on you & let her show you that buying you things = love. let her love you, sarah.

kelsey (kelstarry), Thursday, 21 July 2005 18:18 (twenty years ago)

is anyone else sick & tired of seeing/hearing/breathing ads for "the situation" with tuck3r carls0n? it's so overly advertised, i assume the show must suck.

kelsey (kelstarry), Thursday, 21 July 2005 18:43 (twenty years ago)

i've never heard of this show.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 21 July 2005 18:44 (twenty years ago)

xxxpost to myself

Has anyone else noticed that the CTA buses and trains are hot spots for public child abuse? Who screams obscenities at a six-year-old and repeatedly smacks the shit out of them in public? This isn't loving discipline, it's humiliation. And it's always the women who can't control themselves. The dads are always Cool Dad, and the moms are Psycho Beating-The-Shit-Out-Of-You Mom.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Thursday, 21 July 2005 18:46 (twenty years ago)

x-post
I have a friend whose dad used to insist that she and her 3 bros. get ~$250 dollars worth of Christmas presents each, since he didn't have anything growing up and wanted to change that for them. But of course he made her mom shop for them all and then berated the mom when she bought the wrong things. I can't even imagine having that much money.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Thursday, 21 July 2005 18:47 (twenty years ago)

i've never heard of that show either. but i am sick of rich a-holes and people who beat their kids in public and private.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 21 July 2005 18:48 (twenty years ago)

kenan, i think that's too much of a generalization. i've seen dads being total assholes to their kids.

kelsey (kelstarry), Thursday, 21 July 2005 18:48 (twenty years ago)

i heard the ad at least twice this morning on npr (brought to you by...) & have had a couple of pop ups for it during my workday. it's bananas!

kelsey (kelstarry), Thursday, 21 July 2005 18:49 (twenty years ago)

I'm kinda glad I don't use public transport.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 21 July 2005 18:52 (twenty years ago)

Or go to Walmart.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Thursday, 21 July 2005 18:56 (twenty years ago)

me too. xpost to both

kelsey (kelstarry), Thursday, 21 July 2005 18:56 (twenty years ago)

it usually seems to be poor people who beat their kids in public.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Thursday, 21 July 2005 19:03 (twenty years ago)

Yeah because the rich ones buy their silence.

dan m (OutDatWay), Thursday, 21 July 2005 19:04 (twenty years ago)

or their mouths are stuffed with cotton candy and shetland ponies so they can't act up.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 21 July 2005 19:06 (twenty years ago)

it's an interesting phenomenon actually.

why is corporal punishment (what we might consider 'abuse') more commonly accepted as a tool of child-rearing among lower-income families than among middle- or upper-class families?

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Thursday, 21 July 2005 19:08 (twenty years ago)

"That was how my pappy raised me, he didn't stand for no sass mouth..."

Maybe it's all they ever knew?

dan m (OutDatWay), Thursday, 21 July 2005 19:10 (twenty years ago)

...and rich people send their kids to psychologists -- it's cultural, isn't it? i'm no sociologist, but it seems more cultural than economic. doesn't it?

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 21 July 2005 19:13 (twenty years ago)

It's cultureal to the extent that people with little money engage in a different kind of culture. But even accepting that a well-placed smack might be effective punishment, screaming "SIT YOUR ASS THE FUCK DOWN" on a bus is kinda crazy by any standards.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Thursday, 21 July 2005 19:15 (twenty years ago)

I'd rather see a parent shout that at a child than strike them or appease sociopathic behavior.

dan m (OutDatWay), Thursday, 21 July 2005 19:18 (twenty years ago)

i grew up middle class & spanking was a punishment that my parents didn't really shy away from. i knew friends of mine who had parents that would hit/spank them with objects (i.e. a wooden spoon) & no one really looked down on this. later, in college (a school where quite a few people had a bit of money), i realized that some people's parents had taken other "disciplinary" measures...like sent their kids to boarding schools or institutions that were like boarding schools.
i don't know. i have a hard time with generalizations today, but i don't know whether physical punishment is more acceptable among certain economic groups or not. is it possible that the richer they are, the quieter they'd be about it? or, the richer they are the less they'd actually be involved with child rearing?
my thought is that most people nowadays aren't pro physical punishment. then again, i'm just a white girl who doesn't really know a whole lot.

kelsey (kelstarry), Thursday, 21 July 2005 19:19 (twenty years ago)

I am guessing education plays a part here, so I would guess it's both cultural and economic. Either way, abuse is abuse and I have seen much of it on the #66 bus.

Sparkle Motion's Rising Force, Thursday, 21 July 2005 19:20 (twenty years ago)

i think it is cultural and economic, insofar as those two things are inextricable. has a lot to do with tradition, but also with education, and i suspect different sorts of stressors.

xxpost

i find myself trying not to judge the way people interact with their kids, unless there's some obvious abuse going on (often that happens when the parent appears to be drunk or high). maybe that's PC in some fashion, i don't know.

i find that a lot of people (from chicago especially) seem to think this is a racial issue, but i think it's largely a cultural-economic issue which often, in day to day terms, maps to race.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Thursday, 21 July 2005 19:23 (twenty years ago)

yeah, and the person who shouts that would probably shout it at me too, if i were in his/her way. someone who shouts something like that has no regard for the social contract.

i think rich people are more prone to acting in a fashion that implies, "here, YOU deal with it." handing their kids off to someone else for discipline, etc.

i don't know shit about shit though, being childless and also an only child. i didn't really need to be disciplined because i hid from people.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 21 July 2005 19:24 (twenty years ago)

also i am talking out of my a**. there are probably statistics on this. attitudes toward corporal punishment as a tool of child-rearing, i mean.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Thursday, 21 July 2005 19:27 (twenty years ago)

anyway eddie cantor tells a good joke about a guy slapping his kid in public that i wish i could remember in full.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Thursday, 21 July 2005 19:31 (twenty years ago)

i grew up middle class & spanking was a punishment that my parents didn't really shy away from.
Me too. I actually preferred my mom's house slipper to my dad's hand. He hit harder. But they both only ever hit me on the bottom, traditional spanking stylee.

Another woman I work with is about to have a baby. She has a 24-hour live-in nurse lined up for when she brings the baby home, even though her mom will be staying with her to help her out (& she has a loving husband in the pic too).

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 21 July 2005 19:42 (twenty years ago)

Well then, I guess she'll be back at work after a week?

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 21 July 2005 19:49 (twenty years ago)

this reminds me of caitlin o'flanagan -- have you guys ever read any of her stuff? she used to write for the atlantic monthly but now i think she writes for the new yorker. she would go on and on about the indignities of working class women right after admitting that she 1) worked from home and 2) hired a nanny for her kids. every article she wrote made me want to scream.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 21 July 2005 19:50 (twenty years ago)

too many cooks in the kitchen!!!

kelsey (kelstarry), Thursday, 21 July 2005 19:52 (twenty years ago)

"in the pic"??

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Thursday, 21 July 2005 19:54 (twenty years ago)

oops. it's just caitlin flanagan. but i still can't stand her.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 21 July 2005 19:55 (twenty years ago)

CF wrote this article in The New Yorker all about her 2 week vacation in Hawaii and how it was so annoying that their hotel was far away from the beach so her kids didn't want to walk anywhere in wet clothes and bitched and moaned about private time and the price of cocktails and so next year they went to the Dells and stayed in a hotel with a built in waterpark and the kids were much happier. Um, go to Hawaii with your husband for your couple-y vacation, ask the kids what they want for theirs.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Thursday, 21 July 2005 20:02 (twenty years ago)

Nobody can stand her. I know Jessa can't. And I think I remember the exact Atlantic article you're talking about. Why anyone would let such a prissy little ninny write about women's issues is beyond me. Surely she's not the only woman in the room. Or is she?

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Thursday, 21 July 2005 20:06 (twenty years ago)

so next year they went to the Dells and stayed in a hotel with a built in waterpark

Kalahari!! I pass that place every time I drive to Minneapolis. I totally want to go up there to get drunk and go down waterslides.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 21 July 2005 20:09 (twenty years ago)

I read something about how she was "at a dinner party" with an atlantic editor and this person said "caitlin, you have such an original voice, you should write."

so she did. just like that. it's nauseating.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 21 July 2005 20:11 (twenty years ago)

i don't trust anyone who has never changed the sheets on her own bed.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 21 July 2005 20:12 (twenty years ago)

That's probably what someone told Sarah Vowell too. Only they meant it in a "get your awful voice off the radio" sort of way.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Thursday, 21 July 2005 20:17 (twenty years ago)

ihttp://www.catandgirl.com/extras/theoretical_adventures_of_sarah_vowell.gif

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 21 July 2005 20:22 (twenty years ago)

Sarah Vowell was writing before she did radio.

I don't really like her that much anymore, but I once did quite a bit, so I still feel defensive of her.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 21 July 2005 20:26 (twenty years ago)

(Okay, so she was doing This American Life in 1996, and that book came out in 1997, but she was working on it as early as 1995. I'm fairly sure I knew her primarily by her writing -- she wrote for both Spin and Salon.com ca. 1997-99 -- before I actually heard her on the radio.)

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 21 July 2005 20:45 (twenty years ago)

I like her cute little munchkin features. Also, her new book sounds funny. I saw her do a long reading from it.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Thursday, 21 July 2005 20:48 (twenty years ago)

The first Chicago thread I get in on early and nobody's talking about this damn place....
I heard some kid ride by on a bike the other night proclaiming he was a "Kankakee Gangsta-- Yeah up in Kankakee, I'm gangbangin' over dere."

Sparkle Motion's Rising Force, Thursday, 21 July 2005 20:52 (twenty years ago)

Haha!

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 21 July 2005 20:56 (twenty years ago)

i overheard someone on the train today utter the phrase "it was more of a black-nationalist stylistic."

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Thursday, 21 July 2005 20:56 (twenty years ago)

My grandma was born in Kankakee. Which may explain why former Gov. George Ryan, the old Kankakee pharmacist, always sort of reminded me of my grandma.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 21 July 2005 20:57 (twenty years ago)

dudes don't fuck with the KKee

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Thursday, 21 July 2005 20:57 (twenty years ago)

George Ryan is without a doubt the OKG Original Kankakee Gangsta.

The only Republican I ever liked.

Sparkle Motion's Rising Force, Thursday, 21 July 2005 21:03 (twenty years ago)

It's probably irrational, but he so charmed me w/r/t the death-penalty moratorium that I looked past all the corruption charges and probably would've voted for him if he'd run again and gone up against someone like, say, Glenn Poshard again.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 21 July 2005 21:07 (twenty years ago)

"you had me at 'death penalty moratorium'"

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Thursday, 21 July 2005 21:25 (twenty years ago)

hey, you can see a photo of me looking really confused in the chicago reader's "antisocial" column.

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 22 July 2005 00:29 (twenty years ago)

When? Today's or last week's?

You're the most adorable scenester ever.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Friday, 22 July 2005 00:31 (twenty years ago)

todays!

thanks!! i think

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 22 July 2005 00:55 (twenty years ago)

hahaha

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Friday, 22 July 2005 01:18 (twenty years ago)

Here comes the hotstepper.
I'm a Kankakee Gangsta.
ExCUSE me mister officer.
Still love you like that.

I made it back from the south side and I might have even done an okay job giving the building trades hopefuls the lowdown on Illinois employment law. Tomorrow is all about giving ICE the beef about this nonsense. We're going to the offices tomorrow and anyone who would like to join us is welcome, however we have been warned by the feds that they are going to arrest and deport anyone without good papers.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Friday, 22 July 2005 02:27 (twenty years ago)

this nonsense

Yeah, it was so nice of our president to stand up a couple months ago and admit that these people are the backbone of our economy. Ain't he a nice guy? How do you not love him?

Your job reminds me of my friend Kevin, who was a lawyer for the ACLU in NYC for a couple years. (He's now a lawyer for the EFF.) He told me weekly horror stories.

No matter what anyone says, and not to sound too sappy, the ideals that this country was built on are under constant, steady attack. More now than ever.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Friday, 22 July 2005 03:34 (twenty years ago)

Also, I love you guys. More now than ever.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Friday, 22 July 2005 04:05 (twenty years ago)

Anything fun happening tonight? We're going to see ZZZZ tomorrow night and practicing tomorrow morning, so I don't want to do anything too wild and crazy, but SOMETHING...

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 22 July 2005 12:26 (twenty years ago)

My friends' band The North Atlantic (from San Diego) is playing tonight:

> One/Quarterly Space / 1355 N. Milwaukee Ave. / 3rd Floor
> 8 PM
> $5

There's four bands, and I've been told they'll probably play third or fourth. Anyway, they're sort of emo-punk ... but in a good way? I mean, I like them. Everyone in the band is compulsively watchable, though: the lead singer/guitarist is really intense; the quiet, super-tall bassist kind of dances around in his own way; etc. The drummer's cool, too.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 22 July 2005 12:33 (twenty years ago)

re: tonight: dan and i were thinking of seeing a movie at the cheap seat theater on sheridan. $5 with a student ID...that g-d coworker lunch yesterday ate up nearly half of my spending money for this week.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 22 July 2005 12:51 (twenty years ago)

yes, i'm still seething about it. i seethed about a lot of things yesterday. my apologies to anyone who felt my wrath.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 22 July 2005 12:55 (twenty years ago)

Good morning Chicago. You're good people.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Friday, 22 July 2005 13:16 (twenty years ago)

Last night in class some of my students invited me to a Peruvian pollada, which appears to be a giant street party with 1) dancing, 2) chicken (logically) and (surprise) 3) cow's heart. Corner of Cicero and Berwyn, Aug. 21.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 22 July 2005 13:21 (twenty years ago)

mmm... cow.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Friday, 22 July 2005 13:29 (twenty years ago)

Don't peruvians like hamster too? No, seriously.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 22 July 2005 13:32 (twenty years ago)

Who doesn't like hamster?

You know what's really awesome, though? Gerbil.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Friday, 22 July 2005 13:35 (twenty years ago)

Seriously, though, if people are going to eat rabbit, hamster ain't far off.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Friday, 22 July 2005 13:36 (twenty years ago)

I don't know -- hamsters don't seem like they would have a lot of meat on em. Maybe guinea pigs? My student Sofia assured me that cow's heart was delicioso. The dancing sounds like fun though.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 22 July 2005 13:39 (twenty years ago)

ps -- yes, those were my very first italics.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 22 July 2005 13:40 (twenty years ago)

I just decided that I'm going to start an ultratrendy noise/dance collective called "TWO PRINCES" and we're going to get really hip and famous and rich and then one day some interviewer from VICE or somewhere is going to ask me how I came up with such an awesome band name and I'll say "Uh, it's the name of a Spin Doctors song" and I'll be like ha ha, suckaz!

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 22 July 2005 13:42 (twenty years ago)

ps -- yes, those were my very first italics.

That's so sweet. I'm gettin' misty over here.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Friday, 22 July 2005 13:42 (twenty years ago)

Nick, do you want to call me baby? Because if you do, and I'm not saying you do, but if you do, just go ahead.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Friday, 22 July 2005 13:43 (twenty years ago)

I remember I bought a Time Life/Rolling Stone 6-disc set of The History Of Rock or some such nonsense, and alongside lots of totally boring and predictable shit like Hendrix hits was... um... Bonnie Raitt? Bonnie Raitt in the 70's? That seems a tad revisionist. When did everyone start thinking Bonnie Raitt was a genius?

Anyway, "Two Princes" was on it. No kidding. One of the last tracks. And the liner notes said something about "the future of rock."

That set was so stupid, I couldn't even sell it.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Friday, 22 July 2005 13:52 (twenty years ago)

one of my old roommates had that set too! it sucked so bad that we made her hide it when we had parties.

right now i'm listening to the soundtrack for The Taking of Pelham 123 and it's making me feel like a monster badass.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 22 July 2005 13:57 (twenty years ago)

Listening to Queen over here. Also making me feel like a badass, but of a very different sort.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Friday, 22 July 2005 13:59 (twenty years ago)

One of my coworkers burned me a Do Make Say Think cd this morning, has anyone heard them? I haven't put it on yet but it seems like something Kenan would listen to, for some reason.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 22 July 2005 14:00 (twenty years ago)

Unironically enjoying Queen: hipster or so hipster you can't touch it?

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Friday, 22 July 2005 14:01 (twenty years ago)

Does anyone have a KLF album? Because I've been getting them stuck in my head alot lately.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 22 July 2005 14:03 (twenty years ago)

Proximity to David Bowie = high. Raises hipster quotient, but Queen is sort of untouchable and always hip. Right? If you were unironically enjoying the sounds of the Spin Doctors, this would be a conversation worth having, eh?

Sarah! I was JUST thinking about the KLF!

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 22 July 2005 14:05 (twenty years ago)

I unironically enjoy A Kind of Magic.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 22 July 2005 14:06 (twenty years ago)

I love Queen. Do you like the Sparks?

Livin'! Uh huh uh huh uh huh uh huh (enter keyboard bleeps)

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 22 July 2005 14:06 (twenty years ago)

My friend Michelle was obsessed with the KLF. We listened to them all the time in her white Camaro. Justified AND ancient! That's the theme for my pending 30th birthday.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 22 July 2005 14:07 (twenty years ago)

xpost I think my temporary roommates like them (do make say thnk). They also like me to buy them beer because they're not twenty-one yet (!!!!!!!!). I did not know this when I moved in. Nor did I know about the cat they have to which I am allergic.

It is, however, a most excellent cat. It's like a monkey cat.

I love Queen. I love that KLF song about ice-cream men.

giboyeux (skowly), Friday, 22 July 2005 14:09 (twenty years ago)

Doesn't everybody like Queen? I don't think there's anything ironic about it. I just assumed everyone loved them.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 22 July 2005 14:12 (twenty years ago)

Maybe now they do.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Friday, 22 July 2005 14:18 (twenty years ago)

Critics have never made much of Queen, which seems at odds with their obvious originality. As someone who has dealt with this question all his life, I ask you, why was Queen so maligned?

I can't wrap my head around that, even still. As a writer, there's a side of me that wanted rock critics to like them. Then there's another that can understand why, for instance, Dave Marsh said Queen "may be the first truly fascist rock band," a "shit sandwich" review if there ever was one. I think it has to do with a good amount of player-hating, the need to dis a commercial success; outright homophobia of Freddie Mercury's "flamboyant" and "bravura" showmanship; and, to paraphrase David Lee Roth, rock critics' tendency to only like people who, like themselves, look like Elvis Costello, thus making those artists more feasible sexual proxies than, say, Roger Taylor.

http://www.giganticmag.com/old/features/000068.php

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Friday, 22 July 2005 14:21 (twenty years ago)

Maybe now they do.

I don't remember it being terribly cool to like Queen, at least when I was growing up. It was the territory of my friend's creepy mulleted older brother who always smelled like beer. It was classic rock radio fodder, which I liked because it was always on, but was not cool. At all.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 22 July 2005 14:24 (twenty years ago)

Life before the internet was different, kiddies. (coughs violently, scratches imaginary balls)

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 22 July 2005 14:26 (twenty years ago)

hahaha

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Friday, 22 July 2005 14:28 (twenty years ago)

Boy do I like classic rock.

giboyeux (skowly), Friday, 22 July 2005 14:34 (twenty years ago)

I think my adoration of Boston has been amply covered before.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Friday, 22 July 2005 14:38 (twenty years ago)

The gates and boundaries of cool used to be like the Berlin Wall -- now that they're down, no one remembers how bad things used to be when they were up. But I'm glad they're down.

I was going to say something about Boston, but you beat me to it.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 22 July 2005 14:39 (twenty years ago)

One of my coworkers burned me a Do Make Say Think cd this morning, has anyone heard them? I haven't put it on yet but it seems like something Kenan would listen to, for some reason.

I like DMST. Slocki and I have talked about them a couple of times. By which I mean he e-mailed me a few weeks ago and asked me if I liked them. Here's what I said:

short answer = yes!

long answer = i think the "goodbye enemy airship" single is amazing,
and "& yet & yet" was one of my favorite records of 2002. but i really
haven't listened to it much lately, and their most recent ("winter
hymn, country hymn" or whatever) didn't really thrill me. maybe just
because it felt like the band was spinning wheels rather than doing
anything exciting or new.

why? do you?

jc

and then a minute later:

wait, haven't we talked about them before? didn't we agree they were a good band to listen to while stoned?

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 22 July 2005 14:41 (twenty years ago)

I love queen. It's one of the few bands that bridged the gap between my young and adult life.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Friday, 22 July 2005 14:44 (twenty years ago)

As for Queen, I've always loved "Bohemian Rhapsody," of course -- it was the first song I sang karaoke to -- but I never really took it upon myself to investigate much of the rest of their catalog, apart from the few songs it's hard to avoid ("We Will Rock You," "We Are the Champions," "Another One Bites the Dust," "Fat-Bottomed Girls").

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 22 July 2005 14:46 (twenty years ago)

B-but Bicycle!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 22 July 2005 14:48 (twenty years ago)

I've moved on to Stevie Ray Vaughan now, which I downloaded just to test myself and see if I still like it. I don't.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Friday, 22 July 2005 14:51 (twenty years ago)

Ew. ew.ew.ew.ew.ew.ew. Stevie Ray Vaughn reminds me of my old roommate who "loved the blues" and sleeping with men old enough to be her dad in my bed. My bed! Yuck.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 22 July 2005 14:56 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, it's really shit. I need some... oh... something to wash the taste out of my mouth. Either Basement Jaxx or straight vodka.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Friday, 22 July 2005 15:02 (twenty years ago)

I've moved on to Stevie Ray Vaughan now...

* shaking my head *For shame. For shame.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 22 July 2005 15:03 (twenty years ago)

Man, oh man. I sure wish I could listen to music at my desk.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 22 July 2005 15:04 (twenty years ago)

I can't really listen to much music at my desk either, since I have to be on the phone all the time. Sometimes I can though.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 22 July 2005 15:06 (twenty years ago)

Listening to music at work is overrated. It's almost as distracting as ILX.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Friday, 22 July 2005 15:08 (twenty years ago)

Haha, and you wonder how I got ANYTHING done here!

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 22 July 2005 15:20 (twenty years ago)

(Answer: I don't.)

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 22 July 2005 15:20 (twenty years ago)

Would one or more of you kind people like to go here with me?

http://www.mocp.org/

It's free.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Friday, 22 July 2005 15:24 (twenty years ago)

Sure. That looks neat.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 22 July 2005 15:30 (twenty years ago)

Sure! It's open Saturdays from noon to five.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 22 July 2005 15:31 (twenty years ago)

What's for lunch, everyone? I'll be having a salad, an apple, and some yog.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 22 July 2005 15:35 (twenty years ago)

I'm debating between a salad or going out and getting a deli sandwich from this place.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 22 July 2005 15:36 (twenty years ago)

We're going to watch the Shining at the Siskel film center tonight at 7:45 if anybody wants to come hang out.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Friday, 22 July 2005 15:39 (twenty years ago)

Oh, my, Jordan. That looks really good. Not to mention massively Midwestern.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Friday, 22 July 2005 15:44 (twenty years ago)

Also, does anyone know of a good place to eat around Lake/State. Affordibility is nice, we used to just go to goverener's pub before it closed down.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Friday, 22 July 2005 15:45 (twenty years ago)

Haha, yeah Kenan, it's definitely both.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 22 July 2005 15:48 (twenty years ago)

I thought you were saying that the Shining seemed midwestern. I was confused.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 22 July 2005 15:49 (twenty years ago)

oh man, the shining! if i hadn't just watched it a month ago, i know dan and i would go.

you know that opening sequence, where they drive up the mountain? that's glacier national park, where we went for our honeymoon.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 22 July 2005 15:51 (twenty years ago)

Going to see The Shining sounds pretty fun actually. Maybe...

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 22 July 2005 15:56 (twenty years ago)

I went to the deli, came back with a chicken cordon bleu sandwich and a Jones cream soda (mmmmm). Those men sure love their meat.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 22 July 2005 16:12 (twenty years ago)

Fresh Certified Organic Poultry is da best.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Friday, 22 July 2005 16:30 (twenty years ago)

Those men sure love their meat.

Awesome. That's the way it oughta be. LOVE your meat.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Friday, 22 July 2005 16:31 (twenty years ago)

So is the SHining something we'd have to purchase tickets for ahead of time? Because I wanna go.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 22 July 2005 16:39 (twenty years ago)

I don't know. I've only ever seen Jandek on Corwood at the film center, and it wasn't that crowded, but I really don't know how the draw for Jandek and the draw for the shining would compare. We're going ahead and getting tickets though.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Friday, 22 July 2005 16:51 (twenty years ago)

i've seen tons of movies there -- you don't need advance tickets. just get there 15-20 min. early.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 22 July 2005 16:54 (twenty years ago)

I went to the deli, and came back with a caprese sandwich and a Jones Lime soda. Crazy.

Anyone have Chicago DMV horror stories they'd like to share? I'm cutting out of work a couple hours early to go stand in line...

dan m (OutDatWay), Friday, 22 July 2005 16:54 (twenty years ago)

re: siskel center...did anyone else go to their frederick wiseman series in may 2003? i didn't want it to end.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 22 July 2005 16:55 (twenty years ago)

amanda, i saw high school and that one with the funny name. his first film. in the psych ward. you know what i'm talking about.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 22 July 2005 16:58 (twenty years ago)

titicut follies.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 22 July 2005 16:59 (twenty years ago)

I've never seen a frederick wiseman film. I also never go to the film center, because it's expensive.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Friday, 22 July 2005 17:00 (twenty years ago)

amanda, why weren't you posting to ilx then? i had to go alone!

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 22 July 2005 17:00 (twenty years ago)

you did? man, i LOVE frederick wiseman. high school was great, and i also liked public housing a lot. i have titicut follies on video. a prized possession, since his movies aren't available for rental or anything.

in fact, i heard that homevision, in chicago, has been entrusted to handle the DVD versions, but nothing has been released yet. apparently, he's very difficult to work with.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 22 July 2005 17:03 (twenty years ago)

Anyone have Chicago DMV horror stories they'd like to share? I'm cutting out of work a couple hours early to go stand in line...
I am surprised to find myself saying that I have had a pretty easy time of it over all. Go to the one waaaaay up on Elston close to opening and you should have a pretty quick time of things, depending on what you need to do. The renewal-only office at the Thompson center has done me ok, again if you get there upon opening.

Sparkle Motion's Rising Force, Friday, 22 July 2005 17:03 (twenty years ago)

oh, and hospital -- WOWOWOWOW! one of my favorite movies ever.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 22 July 2005 17:04 (twenty years ago)

I'm talking to someone about a job lead, and every time they tell me more about it, it sounds worse. It started with "We have to get some cool people in here" (Oh, joy, so I still won't have anybody to talk to) and progressed to "You'd never be doing the same thing for very long" (Why not? Do we know exactly what this job is, or is this another one of those places that are managed so badly that they try to get everyone to do everything? HAVING A VAGUE JOB DESCRIPTION IS NOT A PLUS.) Plus it's in Evanston. No problem for some of you, but I live on the west side. We're talking 90 minutes to work every day, probably changing trains downtown. Miserable commute.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Friday, 22 July 2005 17:09 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, that sounds fishy.

The recruiter I talked to yesterday continues to amaze me. He got me an interview on Monday at 10am. I can't wait.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Friday, 22 July 2005 17:11 (twenty years ago)

I would be remiss not to mention this as well: If you like Wiseman, Dan's movie Sheriff is going to be on Independent Lens on PBS in May 2006. Wiseman-esque. Unfortunately, it's edited for TV, but it's still better than most television documentaries. No talking heads, no interviews. I'll remind you when it gets closer...

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 22 July 2005 17:13 (twenty years ago)

Congrats on the interview, Jeff! Your recruiter has admirable pimping skills.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 22 July 2005 17:14 (twenty years ago)

The only time I had to deal with the DMV (to go get my Illinois license after we moved here), it was pretty pain-free! I went to the one down in the Loop.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 22 July 2005 17:17 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I was thinking of going to the one on Elston. The thing is, I have to get a new license and register the car I just bought. So I'm tearing through the Sec. of State web page making sure I have all my shit together.

dan m (OutDatWay), Friday, 22 July 2005 17:18 (twenty years ago)

Do I have to get an IL license now?

giboyeux (skowly), Friday, 22 July 2005 17:19 (twenty years ago)

You probably should but you know, whatever. Until I got my license renewed three months ago, it said I still lived at an address I hadn't been at in five years.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 22 July 2005 17:21 (twenty years ago)

there is nowhere to eat downtown

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Friday, 22 July 2005 17:22 (twenty years ago)

I lived in NC with expired OH license plates and license for 3 years. That's living on the edge. Chicago is more ticket-happy though.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 22 July 2005 17:22 (twenty years ago)

Oh yeah, I forgot to say, I still had IL plates and all of that.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 22 July 2005 17:25 (twenty years ago)

...h'm. I don't want to lose my in-state eligibility in MN, though.

giboyeux (skowly), Friday, 22 July 2005 17:26 (twenty years ago)

eligibility for what?

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 22 July 2005 17:27 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I was thinking of going to the one on Elston. The thing is, I have to get a new license and register the car I just bought.
Do you need to take a driving test? Because the Thompson center office should suit your needs otherwise. Plus they have a Revenue office next door where you'll have to kick down some tax on that new vehicle.

Sparkle Motion's Rising Force, Friday, 22 July 2005 17:27 (twenty years ago)

there is nowhere to eat downtown

Go to Ashkenaz Deli! It's on Cedar, I think it's close to Lake and State.

Sure, I may only know like three restaurants in Chicago, but Ashkenaz is awesome.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 22 July 2005 17:27 (twenty years ago)

You guys are all about the delis.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 22 July 2005 17:30 (twenty years ago)

"You guys" = JEWS?!?

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 22 July 2005 17:32 (twenty years ago)

haha

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 22 July 2005 17:34 (twenty years ago)

yeah, i thought it was a good day for an antisemitic joke. geez! i meant "you people who have been talking about delis for 90 minutes".

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 22 July 2005 17:35 (twenty years ago)

Ashkenaz is awesome

It is good. Drawbacks: $9 sandwiches. And those creepy dried fish in the display case.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Friday, 22 July 2005 17:36 (twenty years ago)

A little too far north. We may just go to Ada's Jewish deli. We go there all the time though, but I could eat there everyday.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Friday, 22 July 2005 17:38 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I guess it can be expensive. I only go there once or twice a year (as I will for breakfast a week from tomorrow!) so I don't really notice.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 22 July 2005 17:39 (twenty years ago)

I want to see the Shining! I'll look into how expensive it is.

I posted this long thing earlier, but got POXY FOOLEd. Woe is me.

Anyway, you should definitely get your license for IL and whatever tags/stickers you need. We got pulled over within our first month moving here for having a brake light out and almost got ticketed for not being up to date on all that stuff.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 22 July 2005 17:54 (twenty years ago)

shining is $9

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 22 July 2005 17:58 (twenty years ago)

$2 off with a student ID...

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 22 July 2005 17:59 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, but I'm not a student and neither is Nick. I really wish I still had my student id. I'd save millions! MIlllliiiooonssss I tells ya! But by the time I graduated (back in the last century), it split in two. Little did I know I should have paid to get it replaced at the very end there.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 22 July 2005 18:01 (twenty years ago)

I must mention the student discount a lot, huh. Sorry about that.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 22 July 2005 18:04 (twenty years ago)

all the delis downtown are incredibly overpriced

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Friday, 22 July 2005 18:05 (twenty years ago)

My student ID was really faded by the time I graduated from college. I think the last time I used it was a year after graduation -- I'd gone to see A.I. at the Village North, and the old woman at the box office eyed it suspiciously and said "Are you sure you're still in school?" I was like, wtf, of course I am, what do you take me for? After that night, I tossed it in a drawer somewhere.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 22 July 2005 18:11 (twenty years ago)

A drawer...IN TIME?!?!?

I just fact-checked something about Madeleine L'Engle yesterday.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 22 July 2005 18:20 (twenty years ago)

Whoa... 5th grade english flashback there. I did a book report on that.

dan m (OutDatWay), Friday, 22 July 2005 18:27 (twenty years ago)

I remember loving those books as a kid, but all I can remember is one line that contains the words "the stench and the retch".

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 22 July 2005 18:31 (twenty years ago)

The only people I know now who read Madeleine L'Engle and C.S. Lewis are liberal Christians.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 22 July 2005 18:33 (twenty years ago)

Well the Lewis books were pretty much straight allegory. But I don't remember anything like that in the L'Engle books.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 22 July 2005 18:35 (twenty years ago)

I don't know if it's in the kids' books -- I've never read them -- but she's written a lot about Christianity elsewhere.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 22 July 2005 18:37 (twenty years ago)

Help me, I'm becoming a UNIX nerd!

dan m (OutDatWay), Friday, 22 July 2005 18:50 (twenty years ago)

OH NO!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 22 July 2005 18:53 (twenty years ago)

Eh, I guess there's worse things to be...

dan m (OutDatWay), Friday, 22 July 2005 18:53 (twenty years ago)

like a eunuch nerd.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 22 July 2005 18:56 (twenty years ago)

boy, that joke was staler than the croutons in a hospital cafeteria salad bar. staaaaaaaaaaaaale.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 22 July 2005 18:57 (twenty years ago)

and that's assuming that any hospital would be stupid enough to even have a salad bar, what with all of those sick people there.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 22 July 2005 18:58 (twenty years ago)

while i'm over here talking to myself, let me share with you (me) this thing that just happened. this lady called me yesterday. i didn't call her back yet. today she called her salesperson, who called me and told me that the lady wants me to call her.

could she have not just called ME? why the rigamarole? barf.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 22 July 2005 19:28 (twenty years ago)

I feel your pain.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 22 July 2005 19:41 (twenty years ago)

A guy concluded his telephone call to me (at work)with this:

Him-"Do me a favor.
Me- "What's that sir?"
Him- "Look in a mirror..."
Me- "OK"
Him- "...and tell yourself you're looking at a great guy."

Sparkle Motion's Rising Force, Friday, 22 July 2005 19:44 (twenty years ago)

Ha ha nice. Sometimes old people try and tell me jokes and I have to pretend that they are funny.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 22 July 2005 19:45 (twenty years ago)

Yeah this guy was one of those 'I know... I'm a real "Character"' characters. He told me he was broke and then asked how much a piece of sculpture would cost for a "good guy".

Sparkle Motion's Rising Force, Friday, 22 July 2005 19:48 (twenty years ago)

Him- "...and tell yourself you're looking at a great guy."

hahahaha. hopefully you're not a woman.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 22 July 2005 19:53 (twenty years ago)

Ha ha nice. Sometimes old people try and tell me jokes and I have to pretend that they are funny.

i think this is my least favorite part about the job that i am leaving tomorrow.

we have a lot of elderly volunteers, and they chat with me, and tell me stories that don't seem to have much humor in them whatsoever, but they tell them in an "isn't this funny?" manner so i have to force a smile and/or a laugh. i find this very difficult.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Friday, 22 July 2005 19:58 (twenty years ago)

i find it interesting in a way that these people tell stories that are completely banal but tell them (sort of) as "jokes."

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Friday, 22 July 2005 19:59 (twenty years ago)

example?

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 22 July 2005 20:00 (twenty years ago)

Maybe that's how they did it in the old days.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Friday, 22 July 2005 20:01 (twenty years ago)

I work for octogenarians. They are the nicest people, close to family, but between WWII stories (the same 7 or 8)* and enduring lectures on technology (I am the only one here who knows how to use the computer), and some intense bickering by a couple who've been married for 50+ years it can sometimes feel close to death by a thousand cuts.

Let me also just say that I have seen into my chilling, banal-storied future.

*let me also make clear my utmost respect for all WWII vets, especially those on this board.

Sparkle Motion's Rising Force, Friday, 22 July 2005 20:10 (twenty years ago)

I hate when you're sitting quietly in your cubicle pretending that you don't have a shit wage slave office monkey job and some joker comes in and says, "HEY KEEP IT DOWN IN HERE! Ha hahahaha."

Or when you're walking to do something really inane like make copies or your just getting some coffee and someone is like "HEY SMILE!" as if you are broken just because you don't go around all day grinning like a g-d idiot.

Yay the Shining! Let's all go see the Shining! I don't think GSFC is that expensive compared to other movie theaters. It's on par. And THE SHINING is totally worth it!

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Friday, 22 July 2005 20:15 (twenty years ago)

Christ, I take it back. I'm glad the entire staff here is 2 people, one of which is on vacation.

Sparkle Motion's Rising Force, Friday, 22 July 2005 20:19 (twenty years ago)

Hey I might be on Telemundo tonight, in case anybody is in the habit of watching the news in Spanish. I might be on Telemundo singing. In the street.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Friday, 22 July 2005 20:21 (twenty years ago)

JEFF don't forget to call me. I'm going to go counter-act all this do-gooder worker justice with an evil corporate frappuchino. BLESSINGS AND PEACE.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Friday, 22 July 2005 20:23 (twenty years ago)

oh jenny. i missed you. you've only been gone for two days.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 22 July 2005 20:27 (twenty years ago)

"Work sucks... I know..."

deej.., Friday, 22 July 2005 20:27 (twenty years ago)

I am only in the habit of watching "American Ninja 4" in Spanish. Telefutura plays THE BEST movies, hands down.

Sparkle Motion's Rising Force, Friday, 22 July 2005 20:28 (twenty years ago)

The Shining was TOTALLY worth it!

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Saturday, 23 July 2005 06:49 (twenty years ago)

jaymc (jaymc), Saturday, 23 July 2005 06:49 (twenty years ago)

jaymc (jaymc), Saturday, 23 July 2005 06:49 (twenty years ago)

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Saturday, 23 July 2005 13:08 (twenty years ago)

does anyone want to see:

- bad news bears
- charlie and choc. factory
- um... some other movies i wanted to see

also j+j do you still want to see my darling clementine in grant park on tuesday? does anyone else want to join us (if it's happening)?

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Saturday, 23 July 2005 15:02 (twenty years ago)

movies in the park are really, really fun btw. as long as it doesn't rain.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Saturday, 23 July 2005 15:02 (twenty years ago)

oh i also want to see the island.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Saturday, 23 July 2005 15:05 (twenty years ago)

Oh Chicago. We bought a window unit today for our bedroom. Just in time for a 100 degree day. We had to go to three places to find one, finally getting one at sears.

I don't think we can do it ama. Jenny would have to change her shift at work, and we need tuesday morning free to run errands. Which sucks ,because I really wanted to see it outside.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Saturday, 23 July 2005 20:02 (twenty years ago)

Also, I just bought bears tickets. The cheap seats sell out quick.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Saturday, 23 July 2005 20:03 (twenty years ago)

Hi Chicago!

This Do Make Say Think record kinda sucks, but I don't think I can say that to my coworker who burned it for me.

Also, I got cat ear infection antibiotic into my eye this morning. At least I won't have to worry about getting an ear infection in my left eye, yes?

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 25 July 2005 12:40 (twenty years ago)

Which DMST record, J?

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 25 July 2005 12:51 (twenty years ago)

I once shot jalepeno juice into my eye. It was horrible.

Nick: if you're here -- I'm not at work today, so I have to wish you luck on your interview from the comfort of my home. I'll check here too, if you have a question. I think your interview is today?

Jaymc: You've got mail. (photos, etc.)

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 25 July 2005 12:56 (twenty years ago)

Hi. I am at home "sick" in preparation for my interview this afternoon and listening to Adam & the Ants "Kings of the Wild Frontier." It's awesome! xpost

To be Chicago-focused: yesterday we went out to Evanston, and we went to the Block Museum at Northwestern, and I have to say, it sucked. I thought it would be a real art museum with permanent exhibits and stuff, but instead there was one exhibit of really bad '80's-looking "glass art" and nothing else. LAME.

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 25 July 2005 12:59 (twenty years ago)

Winter Hymn, Country Hymn or whatever it's called, the newest one.

I once shot jalepeno juice into my eye

Argh. That reminds me of the time I was on the way to a meeting with some people at a hospital in Arizona, and I put hot sauce on my eggs at breakfast and then rubbed my eye unthinkingly. Awesome.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 25 July 2005 12:59 (twenty years ago)

xpost I'm home "sick" too.

I've only been to the Block Museum for movies - I love it when they have silent movies with live musical accompaniment. The best one I saw was Laugh Clown Laugh with Pinetop Seven playing. Lon Chaney is tops.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 25 July 2005 13:02 (twenty years ago)

Good luck with your interview, Nick! Do you have your three greatest weaknesses prepared? Not to mention a time you screwed up at another job and what you did about it?

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 25 July 2005 13:02 (twenty years ago)

Or when you're walking to do something really inane like make copies or your just getting some coffee and someone is like "HEY SMILE!"...
This has happened to me at basically every job I've ever had. And then the person who says it to me always grins and stares at me, waiting for me to be tickled pink and cracking a smile. So then I have to make a fake smile, which hurts me.

Also, much like the "KEEP IT DOWN!" stuff, I often get semi-teased for being too quiet/polite/on the verge of prudish at work. If I say anything remotely off-color, someone will say, Did everyone hear what Sarah just said? Oh, silly Sarah. She never says any bad words."* HELL-OOO, I'm at work. I'm not at a party.

* No one has ever said those words ver batim. I'm not the greatest at making up fake dialogue.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 25 July 2005 13:03 (twenty years ago)

Anyway, how's it going, Chicago?

I think Tuesday night, Nick and I might go to some comedy thing. (Where is it?) just because Rob Buscem1 will be performing. We had talked about going to Summerdance on a Wednesday, but also practicing, so I dunno.

This report was brought to you by Sarah Johnson.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 25 July 2005 13:17 (twenty years ago)

Live from the Kraus Haus:

I'm sitting here trying to motivate myself to prepare review materials for my class this week. I realized that I have not taught them enough about articles, comparatives/superlatives or the future tense. I'm concerned that none of them will graduate to Level 4. And also that I'm the worst teacher on Earth because I spent two weeks on prepositions and made them watch a Twilight Zone episode that I think they found boring. I just ate a grocery store donut. The End.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 25 July 2005 13:26 (twenty years ago)

Tuesday is Jessa's first reading series event at the Hopleaf. I must attend to lend moral support.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 25 July 2005 13:27 (twenty years ago)

There is a Twilight Zone episode about prepositions??

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 25 July 2005 13:30 (twenty years ago)

B-But Amanda, they probably just think you are quirky because of the Twilight Zone episode and my favorite teachers were always the weirdest ones.

I've been perusing craigslist, like I do every day. First of all, why don't people clean up their apartments before they take photos of them? I mean, check this one out:
http://chicago.craigslist.org/apa/86598053.html
It's gorgeous, but WTF?! And the ad after that one features a toilet sitting in the middle of a spacious loft.

Also, you know those ads that are reposted basically every day for weeks? I always wonder what sucker will end up buying/renting whatever it is at that price without first checking to see that it hasn't been posted for ages. I mean, there's probably a REASON no one bit before.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 25 July 2005 13:30 (twenty years ago)

re: TZ in the classroom... There is a Twilight Zone episode about prepositions?? It was the one where the lady is attacked by little space aliens in her old farmhouse and there's no dialogue until the end, when they say "No counter-attack! We are under siege by a race of giants!" When I showed it to a group of adult ESL students, they were comatose by the end and no one got the big twist. I had to explain it, which took some of the glee out of it. Sometimes my plans backfire. If I'm lucky, they think I'm pleasantly weird. If not, they think I talk too fast and make no sense.

re: that apartment -- that place is a MESS. geez.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 25 July 2005 13:35 (twenty years ago)

What's with all the papers on the ground? It would have taken, like, 5 minutes to sweep it up into piles.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 25 July 2005 13:37 (twenty years ago)

what's with the price tag? doesn't that seem a lil' steep for logan square?

kelsey (kelstarry), Monday, 25 July 2005 13:58 (twenty years ago)

looks like someone's trying to rent out an overpriced condo they bought and don't want anymore, for whatever reason.

that's a great photo.

this one is from saturday, before the death rays of heat forced people to get slightly more naked than they should have.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 25 July 2005 14:44 (twenty years ago)

by the way, wedding crashers is quite funny. i saw it last night in an effort to be in an air conditioned space long enough to get *cold*

kelsey (kelstarry), Monday, 25 July 2005 14:44 (twenty years ago)

and finally, wearing a pink oxford shirt:

http://tinypic.com/9fr0v7.jpg

i got some other photos, but those were the two best heads. there were a LOT of people there.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 25 July 2005 14:47 (twenty years ago)

the only thing i know about lollapalloza (from this weekend) is that john sent me a drunken "go razorbacks!" text message.

kelsey (kelstarry), Monday, 25 July 2005 14:48 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, it was batshit hot. We spent the afternoon sneaking from movie theater to movie theater, seeing lots of fiar-to-middling stuff. It was so worth it. I still had trouble sleeping last night, though. Sweating and sleeping don't mix.

But look!

91 today.
83 Tues
76 Wed(!)
81 Thurs
80 Fri
82 Sat
85 Sun

Ahhh. Sweet relief. After yesterday, I feel somehow like we earned it.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 25 July 2005 14:48 (twenty years ago)

the mascis photo is indeed great, but i loved watching the screen when the hair was entirely in his face, and his eyes were closed the whole time.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 25 July 2005 14:49 (twenty years ago)

i'm so excited for low 80's.

kelsey (kelstarry), Monday, 25 July 2005 14:50 (twenty years ago)

Yesterday: hottest day since the heat wave of 1995.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 25 July 2005 14:51 (twenty years ago)

yeah, it was great when the hair was all over the place. i totally picture him living in a basement. murph was jiggly and topless, lou was way more screamo than he normally is. stage banter consisted of "Look at that pretty skyline."

i am 100% ready for some low 80s.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 25 July 2005 14:56 (twenty years ago)

Wow. I can't believe I was standing outside all day yesterday.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 25 July 2005 14:57 (twenty years ago)

i can't either. i felt like vomiting from all the heat. it makes me feel awful & really crab-appley.
you know how there is this pattern of ice age & then heated times & then back to ice age again? i think about that on days like yesterday. i wonder how hot it's really going to get.

kelsey (kelstarry), Monday, 25 July 2005 15:13 (twenty years ago)

Apparently it was close to 100 degrees here yesterday but I didn't really notice. I stayed in air conditioning, napped, and went to see Hitchhiker's Guide at the cheap theater.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 25 July 2005 15:16 (twenty years ago)

i was in yesterday's weather all weekend b/c i was in arkansas & i was hoping that coming back to chicago would feel refreshing, if only by comparison. it shore diddnt.

kelsey (kelstarry), Monday, 25 July 2005 15:17 (twenty years ago)

I felt like I was cooking out there. Like my body was cooking. On one hand, it was horrible. I was miserable for 1/3 of the day. On the other hand, I wore sunscreen and didn't really get burned at all. I wonder what kind of sunscreen Dan M's wife used that it prevented her from getting tan. I want some of that.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 25 July 2005 15:19 (twenty years ago)

Even with the movie theatres, the apartment was hot when I got home. I started radiating heat again inside of an hour, and sweating enough to make me feel fat. When I jumped into a cold shower before bed, I had the strange sensation of cold water hitting my shoulders, and warm water running off of my fingertips. I kept turning the hot water down more and more until it was totally cold. And only then did I sleep.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 25 July 2005 15:28 (twenty years ago)

i was just reading this week's post secrets & so i read kenan's post like it was a confession to no one in particular.

kelsey (kelstarry), Monday, 25 July 2005 15:29 (twenty years ago)

It was to you, kelsey. Don't tell anyone.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 25 July 2005 15:30 (twenty years ago)

i think it was really all about your last sentence. that's the part that felt most secretive.

kelsey (kelstarry), Monday, 25 July 2005 15:34 (twenty years ago)

Is there any reason why my fingers should've gone all prune-like in the shower this morning? I wasn't in there for that long. A reason that has to do with the heat, maybe? Hydration? I don't know.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 25 July 2005 15:36 (twenty years ago)

We spent yesterday holed up in the bedroom, cooled by the emergency purchased window unit AC. At one point, we decided to see what it was like outside and rode our bikes to the Borders on Broadway (and my flip flop broke and I had to ride my bike home with one bare foot, which for some reason seemed for dangerous because it was so hot), then to Clark St. to pick up some dinner and check to see what time the dry cleaners opened. At first it was okay. Then it was nauseating.

The hot wind felt like a feverish person's breath. Creepy.

I didn't realize how poorly I was sleeping in the heat (and because there's a street lamp that shines right on my pillow that I have to contort myself to get away from, which explains the constant stiff neck I've had all summer) and on Saturday night, the first night with the AC, I slept for 12 hours straight. It was wonderful.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Monday, 25 July 2005 15:37 (twenty years ago)

Is there any reason why my fingers should've gone all prune-like in the shower this morning?

Have you been eating a lot of raisins?

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 25 July 2005 15:41 (twenty years ago)

Funny, but no.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 25 July 2005 15:41 (twenty years ago)

the only thing i know about lollapalloza (from this weekend) is that john sent me a drunken "go razorbacks!" text message.

That was really funny until I remember you were in Arkansas. I just liked the idea of John sending you "go razorbacks" completely at random.

Nick, good luck with the interview!!! Jeff had one today at 11. It's probably still going on. This one is at a lawfirm and he found out through a recruiter who has called him like three times since setting up the appointment. I guess it's good to have someone who only gets paid when you get hired on your side in this process.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Monday, 25 July 2005 15:42 (twenty years ago)

leaf & i tried biking over to his place around 12:30 am to hit up some of his a/c only to discover that his power had gone out.
last night was the hottest, most uncomfortable sleep of my life. no fans, nothing. opening the widows didn't help because the air was hot & still. it was awful. i almost called in sick today just so i could ride home & sleep in my own house.

kelsey (kelstarry), Monday, 25 July 2005 15:43 (twenty years ago)

I didn't realize how poorly I was sleeping in the heat (and because there's a street lamp that shines right on my pillow that I have to contort myself to get away from, which explains the constant stiff neck I've had all summer) and on Saturday night, the first night with the AC, I slept for 12 hours straight.

I did that Friday night! Only without an air conditioner. I've been sleeping like extreme amounts of shit, too. I think I just crashed.

Also, I STILL LOVE YOU SO MUCH AND I THINK ABOUT KILLING MYSELF ALL THE TIME AND I DO A LOT OF DRUGS AND I'M REALLY KINKY AND ALSO LONELY.

And can i share just one more secret?

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 25 July 2005 15:45 (twenty years ago)

Wow, that IS a secret.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 25 July 2005 15:45 (twenty years ago)

you mean the picture i can't see?

kelsey (kelstarry), Monday, 25 July 2005 15:46 (twenty years ago)

wait. now i see it.

haha!

kelsey (kelstarry), Monday, 25 July 2005 15:47 (twenty years ago)

I wish I was able to sleep this weekend. I am going to crash tonight.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 25 July 2005 15:47 (twenty years ago)

I still don't see the picture -- oh well.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 25 July 2005 15:47 (twenty years ago)

i know that a lot of the secrets are of a similar theme . . . but i'm addicted to that site. the woman who puts boogers in her husband's soup b/c she gets mad at him?! classic!

kelsey (kelstarry), Monday, 25 July 2005 15:47 (twenty years ago)

Huh. That sounds like the recruiter who found me this job. She called me SO many times just to chat before my interview. And she would be like, "OH, sorry for all the noise. That's my dog..." and then she would talk to the dog for a while. Good times. But she got me this job. And she's the boss's sister.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 25 July 2005 16:04 (twenty years ago)

Hey Kenan, what time is Jessa's reading? I might stroll over there tomorrow night.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Monday, 25 July 2005 16:29 (twenty years ago)

PS. My interview went well today, so they will set me up with an onsite interview. I wish I got paid for interviewing, I've done it so much in the last couple of months.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Monday, 25 July 2005 16:29 (twenty years ago)

Jeff: starts at 7:30. We'd love to see you.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 25 July 2005 16:32 (twenty years ago)

Excellent, chances are good that I'll be over there. Doesn't hurt that it's in a bar.

PPS. I rode Metra for the first time today.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Monday, 25 July 2005 17:04 (twenty years ago)

And how was it?

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 25 July 2005 17:07 (twenty years ago)

Nice, for the 10 minutes I was on it. I took it from Madison/Canal to the Ravenswood station. Took me longer to walk home from Ravenswood than the trip took.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Monday, 25 July 2005 17:12 (twenty years ago)

i only ask because more people i know are taking it and it seems like, when you consider getting to the station and getting home, doesn't it take just as long as taking the el? i feel the same way about the purple line.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 25 July 2005 17:19 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, even when the purple line is running, you wait for it for longer than you would a bus.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 25 July 2005 17:23 (twenty years ago)

It was a tad bit quicker than the el for me, which I took to the place.

El to 500 W Madison - ~45 minutes with transfer to the brown line - .8 miles walked

Metra from 500 W Madison ~30 minutes - 1.6 miles walked

It's really a push for me, the el was nice until I transfer at belmont, then I can't sit down on the train. The walking is usually a moot point, since I ride my bike to the station most days.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Monday, 25 July 2005 17:30 (twenty years ago)

whoops, the mileage is if I took both each one there and back. time is one way.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Monday, 25 July 2005 17:31 (twenty years ago)

Your calculations are elaborate and convincing.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 25 July 2005 17:34 (twenty years ago)

did anyone read the NYT lollapalooza review? jon pareles described ben gibbard's voice as "reedy" and win butler's voice as "weedy."

who gets the nomination for beady? meaty? tweedy? seedy? creed-y? feety?

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 25 July 2005 17:37 (twenty years ago)

Oh, I'll check that out. I saw DeRo's bitchfest.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 25 July 2005 17:38 (twenty years ago)

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 25 July 2005 17:41 (twenty years ago)

Actually, let me not read the Pareles article before I start mine. He's too good of a writer, and I'll either get depressed or unwittingly steal phrases from him.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 25 July 2005 17:42 (twenty years ago)

To flashback to the talk of Quencher's from the last thread:

(I'll preface this by saying I have not seen this object with my own eyes, only heard tale of its existance. I plan on checking it out sometime this week.)

Evidently there is some kind of advertisement in the men's room. Nothing unusual about that, right? But wait... this advertisement is a 3-D, talking pair of breasts. I'm not sure what it's supposed to advertise, or exactly what it talks about. Supposedly it makes comments about the size of your unit. Or something. At any rate, it sounds hilariously terrible. Are these things at other bars around town?

dan m (OutDatWay), Monday, 25 July 2005 17:44 (twenty years ago)

what?!

kelsey (kelstarry), Monday, 25 July 2005 17:47 (twenty years ago)

dan, i'd advise not taking the crank before you venture into a bar next time

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Monday, 25 July 2005 17:50 (twenty years ago)

Does anyone else feel like they're living in the future every time they see that moving, flickering car ad on the walls of the Blue Line subway?

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 25 July 2005 17:52 (twenty years ago)

I have yet to see it.

kelsey (kelstarry), Monday, 25 July 2005 17:53 (twenty years ago)

We are living in the future! Always were.

Annnnd NOW! and now. and now. and now.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 25 July 2005 17:53 (twenty years ago)

I felt like I was living in the future yesterday because of the heat & thinking about ice ages & all that.
I also feel like I'm living in the future when I think about my cell phone-less, internet-less, computer-less childhood. I also did not own moon boots or eat pill form food in my youth.

kelsey (kelstarry), Monday, 25 July 2005 17:55 (twenty years ago)

I realized that we are living in the future when I went to the bathroom at a bar in Switzerland. There was a FULL SERVICE robot handwasher, i.e. a contraption where you just stick your hands in and it squirts soap on them, runs water, and turbo air dries them for you.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 25 July 2005 17:58 (twenty years ago)

oh, that ad is really creepy! funny to use the subway tunnel as the means for a persistence of vision experiment.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Monday, 25 July 2005 18:03 (twenty years ago)

jordan, that bathroom sounds kinda awesome. it reminds me though, that after using so many automatic flush toilets in airports & stuff this weekend . . . i hate them. They always flush multiple times just because I'm fumbling around with my bags! what a waste!

kelsey (kelstarry), Monday, 25 July 2005 18:06 (twenty years ago)

I do! How do they do it? Nick thought maybe it was a video or just images projected from the el onto the walls, but why does it always show up at the same stretch?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 25 July 2005 18:07 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I like not having to touch anything to flush a public toilet, but I HATE it when it flushes before I've stood up. In fact, sometimes I wish I could be completely out of the stall before it flushes because you never know how powerful that flush is going to be.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 25 July 2005 18:08 (twenty years ago)

Maybe it's only because I only take the Blue Line to work once a week (long story), but I can't believe that everyone's being so non-chalant about it. Look! It's a moving advertisement! Inside the tunnel! It reminds me of movies set in the future where everyone's blithely walking past all sorts of giant flashing screens and robots with logos all over them, because you know, that's how life is.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 25 July 2005 18:08 (twenty years ago)

Apparently, Chicagoist had a blurb on it:

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 25 July 2005 18:35 (twenty years ago)

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Monday, 25 July 2005 18:38 (twenty years ago)

Awesome.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 25 July 2005 18:39 (twenty years ago)

The Blue Line ads sure have the "Ooooo!" factor. The last time I went through there 75% of the people on the car rubbernecked it almost immediately. I find it hilarious that they're advertising Hummers to people riding mass transit.

And, as I said above, I've never seen the talking titties with my own eyes. The crank does many different things to me, but hallucinations aren't part of the deal.*

*I have never, nor will I ever, taken crank. I don't do drugs. Just weed. Hey hey hey smoke weed every day. How many Chappelle references can I make...

dan m (OutDatWay), Monday, 25 July 2005 18:39 (twenty years ago)

I don't know why I kept saying "moving advertisement" when I meant "commercial."

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 25 July 2005 18:41 (twenty years ago)

300th new answer!

kelsey (kelstarry), Monday, 25 July 2005 19:34 (twenty years ago)

I wish I could be completely out of the stall before it flushes because you never know how powerful that flush is going to be.

OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH man, me too. Ever since I read this horrible article about how toothbrushes routinely test positive for fecal bacteria because of the toilet water spray when the toilets flush I get a little uncomfortable about in a tight cramped space with a flushing toilet. (and I keep my toothbrush in the medicine cabinet. and I always close the lid before I flush.)

My friend Andrew teases me and says as long as I don't stand over the toilet with my mouth open, I'll be okay. This image both grosses me out and makes me L-O-L at the same time.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Monday, 25 July 2005 20:03 (twenty years ago)

I often dip my toothbrush in the Listerine before brushing. I can do that now that I don't share a bottle of Listerine. I also worry about what's growing in my bathroom unbeknownst to me.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 25 July 2005 20:05 (twenty years ago)

I close up shop before flushing, which just puts fecal matter on the bottom of the lid.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Monday, 25 July 2005 20:07 (twenty years ago)

But then I guess it gets on your lower back next time you do the deed. I can't say anything about that, except that you don't put your lower back in your mouth.

Yesterday, I tried to kiss my elbow. Does not work.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Monday, 25 July 2005 20:13 (twenty years ago)

jenny: i do the EXACT same thing as you when it comes to toilets & their respective lids. EXACT SAME THING. That shit freaks me out (no pun intended. at least, not until i decided to keep it there).

kelsey (kelstarry), Monday, 25 July 2005 20:31 (twenty years ago)

If you're going to try something impossible, go for that whole fellatio thing.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Monday, 25 July 2005 21:53 (twenty years ago)

That little dude is going to have mad fecal matter on him.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 25 July 2005 21:55 (twenty years ago)

I had a real hankering for ice cream, so I went out to get an ice cream sandwich, and instead I bought strawberries because they are better for me and they looked really pretty, and they are so sour!!! And now I am sad.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Monday, 25 July 2005 22:46 (twenty years ago)

Lemme guess: Jewel.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 25 July 2005 22:47 (twenty years ago)

Hey dudes, interview went pretty well I think. I talked to three people, and fortunately the one that I had the most rapport with is the one who's making the decision. I emailed you, Amanda.

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 25 July 2005 23:23 (twenty years ago)

WHY AM I STILL AT WORK??!!

giboyeux (skowly), Monday, 25 July 2005 23:25 (twenty years ago)

I'm still at work, too! But only because there's another intern here and I think we're both too afraid to be like, "Hey, let's jet" lest we don't look dedicated.

No, not Jewel, some random market on 8ryn M4wr.

Yay, Nick!

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Monday, 25 July 2005 23:27 (twenty years ago)

That would be so weird if I get a job on the same floor as Nick. Not bad weird, though.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 25 July 2005 23:28 (twenty years ago)

Which positions are you both applying for?

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Monday, 25 July 2005 23:36 (twenty years ago)

me: Guy who edits photos for cars.com. Manages the photo database. Etc. Piece of cake. I've been doing exactly this (among too many other things) for the last year.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 25 July 2005 23:44 (twenty years ago)

Listening to: Pressure Drop by Toots etc. Makes me insanely happy. Pressure really *will* drop on you. I've been way to stressed about this shit. Pressure drops, and then you make one of the greatest reggae songs in the world out of it. That's what you have to do. When life hands you lemons... make reggae.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 25 July 2005 23:48 (twenty years ago)

I see lightning, and I like it. I want it to drizzle for the next week. Not gonna happen, but I hope.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 00:16 (twenty years ago)

Pressure Drop by Toots etc.

This is easily in my top 20 songs ever recorded ever.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 00:18 (twenty years ago)

Amazing, isn't it? Taut and life-affirming. I'd say it was one of my favorite songs except for the fear that this would make me less than special.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 00:28 (twenty years ago)

Same fear with "Green Onions" by Booker T. and the MGs. But I don't tell everyone that, mainly because it really *is* my favorite song.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 00:32 (twenty years ago)

I am the hipster defined. Someone with excellent taste who is afraid to admit how nakedly he likes the things he likes.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 00:37 (twenty years ago)

Hey Chicago,
there's apparently an outdoor movie tomorrow: My Darling Clementine in Grant Park. Are the outdoor movies fun? Anybody going?
(I'm visiting. Just arrived tonight.)

jadrenos (jadrenos), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 04:02 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, the outdoor movies can be fun! I saw Rear Window last year. Although I always get uncomfortable from sitting on the ground for that long. Like, I never know how to position myself -- leaning forward or leaning back -- and my back just ends up hurting.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 04:27 (twenty years ago)

Yesterday I got downtown for my interview way too early (as I always do) so I went in Starbucks to waste time for a while and they were playing some decent reggae in there! They played "Pressure Drop" followed by "A Message to Rudy" (or whatever that song is called). It was great!

Did we ever figure out if the Superpitcher summerdance is tomorrow or not?

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 12:24 (twenty years ago)

It is. I just checked Chireader.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 13:08 (twenty years ago)

If I could measure my disappointment in snack foods, missing the "fecal matter and fellatio" discussion yesterday would rate at least two bags of Doritos.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 13:25 (twenty years ago)

That said, I am not thrilled to be back at work again.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 13:25 (twenty years ago)

Paunchy, Nick and I walked by your apartment yesterday evening on our way back from Dustry Gr00ve.

Welcome back, Amanda. Did you just take a vacation day yesterday? Oh, no wait. You were "sick," right? Because of lolla?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 13:32 (twenty years ago)

Oooh, I was soooo sick. Honestly, I just really needed a day off. First there was the best friend's wedding, then the mother in law's funeral, then two weekends in a row of music festival. I just needed some couchtime. Sometimes I think I have a very low tolerance for being really busy.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 13:42 (twenty years ago)

And I didn't even sit on the couch for very long yesterday, didn't catch any MeTV. Channel 26: who does your programming?

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 13:44 (twenty years ago)

I meant Channel 23.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 13:47 (twenty years ago)

I think once Nick and I finish watching this last season of Homicide, I should take a break from staring at the boob tube. I just feel like such a lazy ass these days. I sit at my desk at work, drive home, and then watch tv and eat pasta in the heat. Blech. Then I eat ice cream, which is fun, but also lazy.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 13:48 (twenty years ago)

Busy good. Overly busy bad. Hot and tired very bad.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 13:49 (twenty years ago)

Oooh, Homicide. I love that show. I spent a lot of time watching it in reruns on cable. Some would say too much time. I've been eating a sickening number of popsicles.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 13:53 (twenty years ago)

We've been watching them straight through on netflix. I really enjoy it too, but some of the recent episodes have had a lot of flashbacks to other seasons and, since we've been watching them one right after another, that's kind of annoying. Give me new material! There are only a few episodes left!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 13:55 (twenty years ago)

Hi, Chicago. What's up? I'm very caffeinated and hungry and bored.

HI!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 13:58 (twenty years ago)

I feel like a deflated balloon, even after the day off yesterday. Is there anything fun happening this weekend? I need something to look forward to.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 14:01 (twenty years ago)

Nick and I are playing a house show Friday night.

Saturday & Sunday is Wicker Park Summerfest, but I think the best bands are playing Sunday.

Saturday I think is also the day of this huge garage sale thing Kenan knows about.

Sunday is the last Sunday of the month, which is the day of this antique fair on Randolph I always forget to go too (which costs $8 I think).

What else?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 14:03 (twenty years ago)

Paunchy, Nick and I walked by your apartment yesterday evening on our way back from Dustry Gr00ve

Where is Dusty Groove? I wanna hit it this weekend.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 14:04 (twenty years ago)

What else?

Mama Digdown's Brass Band @ Green Mill!

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 14:05 (twenty years ago)

Going out for lunch/beer/pie/whatever with Jordan!

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 14:05 (twenty years ago)

Doh! I forgot!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 14:07 (twenty years ago)

I recommend you all take a few minutes out of you work day to watch the four existing episodes of "House of Cosbys."

http://www.channel101.com/shows/show.php?show_id=121

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 14:07 (twenty years ago)

!!

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 14:11 (twenty years ago)

Hmmm...sounds promising. I could use a good garage sale. The Green Mill sounds infinitely more appealing than Week Three of outdoor music festivals. The flea market in my neighborhood last week was less than stellar. Last year it was so much better. There was a guy selling halfway decent records for a quarter and I bought lots of Julie London.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 14:14 (twenty years ago)

xpost I think they got a cease and desist letter at some point.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 14:14 (twenty years ago)

Do people want to go to the Green Mill on Sat.? We can't go on Friday because of that house show we're playing (which people are welcome to come to, btw).

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 14:15 (twenty years ago)

I'm in for Green Mill! I know Dan (my Dan) would come too, but he has to go out of town. He loves that place.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 14:20 (twenty years ago)

Also, computerman.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 14:27 (twenty years ago)

According to my budget, I only have $3 left to spend for the rest of the month. Is that possible? I mean, to only spend $3? I guess, technically, that's less than a week, but still...

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 14:28 (twenty years ago)

i almost went there last night because a jazz harmonica guy was playing.

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 14:29 (twenty years ago)

p.s. is 3 pair for $20 too much to spend on undies that i really like?

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 14:29 (twenty years ago)

Awesome! Saturday is better because I'll be busting my ass to make the gig in time on Friday. Saturday, I'll just be bumming around Chicago all day.

I will seriously try to get as many people on the guest list as I can, I felt awful about it last year. They can be dicks about it at the GM.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 14:30 (twenty years ago)

i'm helping leaf move to minneapolis this weekend, otherwise i'd be game for the festivities.

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 14:32 (twenty years ago)

No, kelsey. But also, I've spent entirely too much money on underwear in my life.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 14:32 (twenty years ago)

xpost - kelsey - no. no it's not. especially if they're cute.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 14:33 (twenty years ago)

http://www.classactsontour.com/artists/levy/howard5.jpg

Kelsey, it was this guy, wasn't it.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 14:34 (twenty years ago)

nothing says "weekend of moving boxes" like new undies.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 14:34 (twenty years ago)

if that's a picture of howard levy, then yes.

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 14:35 (twenty years ago)

the thing is . . . with the underwear, that is . . . i don't *really* need them. But. They are cute. And cotton (which is my preferred fabric for "everyday wear"). And soft. I just feel like I really need to start pulling a Sarah & be more careful about the monies.

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 14:37 (twenty years ago)

the only reason why i didn't go last night was because a) it was storming when i was going to ride over there & b) i was frickin' exhausted because of the little to no sleep from the night before.

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 14:38 (twenty years ago)

B-but, you would also be pulling a me by splurging on underwear you don't need!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 14:55 (twenty years ago)

oh, okay! then perhaps i'll do it!

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 14:56 (twenty years ago)

Today I'm wearing underwear that DON'T match my top or my skirt, but DO match my necklace. It's subtle, but it works.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 15:00 (twenty years ago)

How important are matching bras & undies? I rarely (if ever) do this. Am I a minority?

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 15:17 (twenty years ago)

Hmm... See, I have a bunch of bras, but only one that wear. I figure it matches my skin, so the undies don't have to match it. A long, long time ago, I had matching bras/undies, but it's too expensive of a habit. Plus, I think underwear are more fun than bras, possibly because they are cheaper.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 15:22 (twenty years ago)

i'm with you. plus, when i am able to, i go braless anyway. nothing sez "sexy" like a camisole & cute underwear. or, no camisole. just underwear. maybe a t-shirt if you're feeling shy.

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 15:25 (twenty years ago)

I have lots of old slips too, which are great for sleeping.

I don't have that many camisoles, but I do like to sleep in tank tops.

Chicago, it's almost lunchtime, sort of!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 15:29 (twenty years ago)

what are you doing for lunch?

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 15:31 (twenty years ago)

I just ate some popcorn (free microwave popcorn at work) and some yogurt raisins I brought with me.

I will be lunching on a PBH today with a side of rasberry yog.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 15:32 (twenty years ago)

None of my every-day undies match my bra(s). My only goal is for it to not be visible through whatever I'm wearing.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 15:32 (twenty years ago)

For lunch I'm having instant miso soup and some bread. And some carrots.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 15:34 (twenty years ago)

Why has everyone else been so quiet while we're talking about our undies? Gathering paperclips? I surely hope not.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 15:36 (twenty years ago)

I'm hungry. I skipped breakfast this morning, which I never do, but I was running late. However: I did get 7 hours of sleep last night, which feels absolutely GLORIOUS to me.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 15:37 (twenty years ago)

i really like this hipster brief trend.

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 15:38 (twenty years ago)

I just bought a new pack of boxers and a new pack of socks. Comfort: achieved!

And for lunch today: I'm not sure... Pad Thai? Pancit? I'm definitely thinking noodles.

dan m (OutDatWay), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 15:38 (twenty years ago)

I think I'm gonna go to Mac Kelly's for some hot salad-bar action. Pick up some apples and carrots while I'm there.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 15:38 (twenty years ago)

if jeff were gathering paperclips, it'd be for "another" purpose.

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 15:38 (twenty years ago)

What hipster brief trend?

dan m (OutDatWay), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 15:39 (twenty years ago)

I wish there was a decent Thai restaurant near my workplace. There's My Thai, but I had the worst pad kee mao of my life there, so I refuse to try it again. (Also, what's up with places putting egg in pad kee mao? New Pot in Oak Park did that shit to me last night. What's weird is that I think I've ordered from there before, and it's been eggless.)

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 15:40 (twenty years ago)

I mean, I go for the boxer briefs, but does that count? I don't think I qualify as a hipster, anyway.

dan m (OutDatWay), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 15:40 (twenty years ago)

Here's a trivia question for y'all, since I am copy-editing a table of the most populous cities in the U.S.: What is the largest city without a professional sports team (MLB, NBA, NFL, NHL)?

I'll buy the winner a beer.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 15:41 (twenty years ago)

xpost Also, H&M has some cheap, appealing undie sets. You know, if you're in the market for that sort of thing.

I always ask for pad kee mao without egg. Eggs - yuk!

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 15:43 (twenty years ago)

See, but Amanda, I feel like without egg is the default at most places. At least, most good places. Pad thai usually has egg, but pad kee mao doesn't.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 15:44 (twenty years ago)

i don't know what i'm doing for lunch. i kinda want to go to borders, but i know i'll buy something. my choices are limited a bit...potbelly? jimmy johns? a grocery store salad?

hipster briefs = sort of a cross between a bikini brief & a regular brief. they look "boyish" in a way. i think they're sexier than briefs, more comfortable than bikinis.

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 15:45 (twenty years ago)

You know, like the ones they have at Amer1can apparel - colorful briefs for the ladies.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 15:47 (twenty years ago)

Underwear & lunch talk, I couldn't ask for anything more.

I also don't know what I'm doing for lunch, but I'm starving. I 'should' go get a salad from Rocky Rococo's, but I'm thinking it's another deli sandwich day, or maybe sushi.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 15:47 (twenty years ago)

xpost - that's the spicy one, right? with the big flat noodles? i just make sure there's no egg when i order. i can't stomach eggs.

i'm soooooooo huuuuuuungry. miso soup isn't going to cut it today.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 15:47 (twenty years ago)

I have a pair like this and then another one in different colors.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 15:48 (twenty years ago)

Birmingham, AL?

Additionally, so they're a girl thing? Once the pants come off I'm pretty oblivious.

xxxxpost

dan m (OutDatWay), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 15:49 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, spicy. Sometimes known in some places as drunken noodles.

I hate eggs, too. People wonder if it's a vegan thing, but no, I've never liked eggs, ever since I was a kid. I can do quiche -- it's in a relatively solid form, and the buttery crust, cheese, and veggies mask the taste -- but that's about as far as I goes.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 15:51 (twenty years ago)

I'm not even remotely vegan and I just can't deal with eggs. Part of me wishes I liked them, but I just can't. If someone served me eggs at their house and it would be rude of me not to eat them, I would swallow what I could without chewing and drink a lot of orange juice. Beyond that, hold the eggs!

Worse than eggs: mayonnaise.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 15:55 (twenty years ago)

also known as "liquid eggs with oil."

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 15:55 (twenty years ago)

Mayo's not bad, but if I think about it too much, it's kinda gross.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 15:56 (twenty years ago)

Nope, not Birmingham, AL. In fact, there are at least 30 cities without sports franchises ahead of Birmingham.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 15:58 (twenty years ago)

Anyone else want to guess?

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 15:59 (twenty years ago)

Columbus, OH?

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 16:01 (twenty years ago)

It was until the Blue Jackets entered the NHL a few years ago.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 16:03 (twenty years ago)

sarah: cute!

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 16:03 (twenty years ago)

rats. Charlotte, NC?

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 16:04 (twenty years ago)

Nope. A bit bigger than that. Also Charlotte has the Charlotte Bobcats (NBA) and Carolina Panthers (NFL)!

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 16:05 (twenty years ago)

Tuscon, AZ?

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 16:07 (twenty years ago)

Tucson is a really good guess, too. It is 4th among cities without sports teams.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 16:07 (twenty years ago)

You are both right that it is in the southern half of the U.S.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 16:08 (twenty years ago)

Kansas City, MO?

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 16:08 (twenty years ago)

I don't mean to ignore you, jaymc. I just have no idea.

I know, kelsey!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 16:09 (twenty years ago)

or is Kansas City in Kansas?

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 16:09 (twenty years ago)

Albuquerque!!!!

giboyeux (skowly), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 16:09 (twenty years ago)

Birmingham, Alabama?

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 16:10 (twenty years ago)

or is it a state i recently visited?

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 16:10 (twenty years ago)

the lengths i'll go to for one beer!

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 16:10 (twenty years ago)

Wait, no, AUSTIN TX.

giboyeux (skowly), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 16:11 (twenty years ago)

Albuquerque is 7th. Kansas City, MO has a baseball and football team. Kansas City, KS, is too small to merit inclusion on the list I'm looking at. (Besides, I would've counted it as part of the greater Kansas City metropolitan area, which is what I did with Fort Worth, TX.) Birmingham was the first guess!

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 16:12 (twenty years ago)

GIBOYEUX WINS.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 16:12 (twenty years ago)

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 16:14 (twenty years ago)

YES.

giboyeux (skowly), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 16:14 (twenty years ago)

2. El Paso, TX
3. Oklahoma City, OK
4. Tucson, AZ
5. Las Vegas, NV
6. Long Beach, CA
7. Albuquerque, NM
8. Fresno, CA
9. Virginia Beach, VA
10. Tulsa, OK

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 16:15 (twenty years ago)

on that note, i think i'll go on a lunch hunt.

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 16:16 (twenty years ago)

Austin is the 16th largest city in the U.S. Meanwhile, Green Bay, home of the Packers, is #244.

Evan, I owe you a beer.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 16:17 (twenty years ago)

Sorry for taking over the thread!

Yesterday, I sent Kelsey a full report of the trend of her name among babies born in the last 30 years. (In brief: it debuted in the top 1000 among girls' names in 1977 and it peaked in popularity in 1992.)

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 16:19 (twenty years ago)

Which means, it still seems like not that common of a name, but among 13-year-olds, it's roughly as popular as Laura or Rachel or Julie among girls born in 1978.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 16:22 (twenty years ago)

Were you playing on the baby names site? The one with graphs?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 16:27 (twenty years ago)

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 16:55 (twenty years ago)

Me and Jenny will be going to the Greenmill because we love jordan and his band. What time does the show start? We plan on getting there EARLY, so we can get the same booth we had last time. Going late to the greenmill is suicide. What's the cover?

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 17:07 (twenty years ago)

Great! The cover is, uh, ten bucks. Like I said, I'll do my best to scam as many guest list entries as possible.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 17:13 (twenty years ago)

I just got back from having a milk-shake only to discover that I have WON A BEER!

Now I have to stop sweating and come up with funny YM-quiz-style questions for a M!NI C00per catalog.

giboyeux (skowly), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 17:16 (twenty years ago)

Excellent, it would be great if you could add us Jeff h3@th, like the candy bar, and Jennifer B|_|rg3$$.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 17:16 (twenty years ago)

OMG I downloaded Java. That site is GREAT. The only thing I'd quibble with is that it plots points by decade, instead of year, so you don't get to see, for example, the drop for Monica between 1997 and 1998 (guess why).

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 17:18 (twenty years ago)

Or also, the sudden emergence of Madison in 1985.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 17:25 (twenty years ago)

Please to post funny personality quiz questions that will determine what kind of accessories you will buy for your new car, plz.

giboyeux (skowly), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 17:26 (twenty years ago)

Cool. It'll probably be under Jeff or Jenny + 1, likewise Nick or Sarah + 1 to make things easier (and so that it appears there are less names on the list!).

I had sushi for lunch, it was the best decision I've made all day. Teriyaki salmon bento box!

xpost

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 17:28 (twenty years ago)

Oh, and we're coming to the saturday show.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 17:28 (twenty years ago)

I'm gonna try to come, too, Jordan. I'll let you know later if that's a definite.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 17:30 (twenty years ago)

(I also don't mind paying, though.)

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 17:30 (twenty years ago)

What time are you-all getting there? I'm going too.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 17:32 (twenty years ago)

I guess I have at least three more days to worry about that, don't I. I'm having a bit of a freakout because my professor is observing my class today. That's all I'll say about that.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 17:33 (twenty years ago)

Show's at 8pm, so we're going to try and get there at 7. Booths are essential!!!!

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 17:36 (twenty years ago)

I'm already there, that's how ready I am for this week to be over.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 17:39 (twenty years ago)

i complain about being broke (maybe not here, but at least irl) & then i go out & buy two cds. life goes on.

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 17:41 (twenty years ago)

Is this show happening tonight?

giboyeux (skowly), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 17:42 (twenty years ago)

Saturday.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 17:43 (twenty years ago)

What CDs did you buy, Li'l K?

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 17:43 (twenty years ago)

ones that you'd hate, i think. i bought a best of howlin' wolf & a leadbelly one.

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 17:45 (twenty years ago)

Yup!

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 17:45 (twenty years ago)

skivvies or CDs?
CD's or skivvies?

i think you made the right decision. skivvies aren't as fun as CDs.

skivvyskivvyskivvy. almost as fun as divvy.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 17:47 (twenty years ago)

who knows. maybe after this weekend i'll go for the underwear.

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 17:49 (twenty years ago)

john . . . it's mostly b/c i wanna get my harmonica legs back. harmonica legs. kinda like sea legs, i guess. but without the sea.

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 17:49 (twenty years ago)

I wish people would just get over the name Madison for a girl. PUHLEASE! I do like Samantha though. And Avery. Apparently, Avery is a pretty hot name right now.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 17:50 (twenty years ago)

where's mandee these days? sometimes she pops up on the chicago threads...

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 17:54 (twenty years ago)

I remember when my cousin Debbie named her daughter Madison, maybe 10 years ago now, and my grandma was obviously skeptical. "It's a bit of an unusual name, isn't it?" she'd say.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 17:54 (twenty years ago)

is it a la splash?

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 17:54 (twenty years ago)

Mandee was on the Noise Dude Enemy List Superwang thread today. And also on the Noise Board itself.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 17:54 (twenty years ago)

just makin' sure she's around, i 'spose.

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 17:55 (twenty years ago)

Oh man, I worked with a guy named Avery who totally sucked. Ruined that name for me forever.

dan m (OutDatWay), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 17:55 (twenty years ago)

i ended up getting a spinach salad for lunch.

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 17:56 (twenty years ago)

is it a la splash?

Or also, the sudden emergence of Madison in 1985.
-- jaymc (jmcunnin...), July 26th, 2005 1:25 PM. (jaymc) (later) (link)

In other words, yes. But of course, after a few years, no one remembered Splash and then it just became a trendy name.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 17:56 (twenty years ago)

i assumed sarah meant avery for a girl, but maybe not? besides, maybe avery will be the "kelsey" of today . . . starting out as a predominately male name & then moving into female ranks.

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 17:58 (twenty years ago)

While people are going with the presidential names, why not Polk? Who always gets forgotten?

Polk.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 17:58 (twenty years ago)

btw, john. . . i think there is a slim harpo song that you might actually like.

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 17:59 (twenty years ago)

hey baby, nice harmonica legs

*whistles*

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 18:00 (twenty years ago)

hi. is it supposed to rain this evening?

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 18:03 (twenty years ago)

i assumed sarah meant avery for a girl, but maybe not? besides, maybe avery will be the "kelsey" of today . . . starting out as a predominately male name & then moving into female ranks.

1998 was the turning point. 1,236 boys and 1,241 girls. Then the girls broke away.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 18:05 (twenty years ago)

if all goes well, it will. thunderstorms are predicted.

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 18:06 (twenty years ago)

If all goes not-so-well, typhoons. First ever on Lake Michigan. And then snow. And then it will rain tar. And then Four Horsemen will ride down from the clouds, and LO! On the pale horse is seated death, and hell rides close behind him!

Or something. I need to brush up on my Revelations.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 18:10 (twenty years ago)

I envy your job, jaymc. You must never be at a loss for small talk, suitable for all occasions.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 18:12 (twenty years ago)

And on the palomino horse was seated Running Bear, with a large hat of feathers, and he cried, "Mazola! Corn goodness!"

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 18:13 (twenty years ago)

i'm suppose to see a movie outside tonight! should i make new plans?

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 18:13 (twenty years ago)

that is very true, jordan. very, very true.

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 18:14 (twenty years ago)

should i make new plans?

Weep. Weep, for all has been laid to waste!

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 18:17 (twenty years ago)

can someone other than k3nan answer that?

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 18:21 (twenty years ago)

my co-worker just heard thunder while i was elsewhere making copies. if it rains, but stops in time for the movie, the ground will still be wet. all i can vouch for are the crazy darkening clouds over lake michigan.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 18:24 (twenty years ago)

i would look at the hour-by-hour forecast on weather dot com. i like that feature. it's usually pretty accurate.

what's the name of that vegetarian place on dempster, right near chicago? blind faith cafe? that place is gooooooood. i was just thinking of how yummy my meal was when i went there. i've only been there once.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 18:26 (twenty years ago)

yup. blind faith. i really like their vegan cupcakes. john doesn't. but i do.

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 18:28 (twenty years ago)

have you been to alice & friends? i've got a real taste for that place these days.

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 18:28 (twenty years ago)

i hear it's good, but i don't eat out much. when my vegetarian friends come into town they drool and beg until we take them to alice & friends. then they're happy.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 18:30 (twenty years ago)

john . . . i thought of someone for that thread you started yesterday. what about br1ttney murphy in s1n c1ty?

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 18:30 (twenty years ago)

I'm looking out the window now. I bet it will storm ANY SECOND! The trees are bending over backwards.

Nick and I just ate at Blind Faith on Sunday! It was good, but I bet it would have been nicer for lunch or dinner. I got a fuckload of french toast. It was good french toast, don't get me wrong. I just thought the entrees looked more interesting.

Amateurist, there's a comedy show Nick and I were going to go to tonight but now we're having band practice instead. Anyway, it's at Gunther Murphy's.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 18:31 (twenty years ago)

Gah, the frosting on those cupcakes is disgusting. I've only been to Blind Faith like twice! I always forget about it.

Kels: I haven't seen Sin City. Actually, I just checked and haven't seen anything that Brittany Murphy has been in, apart from Clueless, which I barely remember and of course she didn't register back then as "Brittany Murphy." And then of course Luann on King of the Hill.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 18:46 (twenty years ago)

I think my dad liked her in 8 Mile. Enough to bring it up, at least.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 18:47 (twenty years ago)

Ugh
(ha ha)

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 18:49 (twenty years ago)

Nooooo.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 18:51 (twenty years ago)

I hate you, Sarah.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 18:51 (twenty years ago)

Hahahah. Sarah, you made me laugh for the first time in several hours. Thank you.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 18:52 (twenty years ago)

hahaha!

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 19:23 (twenty years ago)

John's the one that said it! Brittney's the one that brought it up!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 19:23 (twenty years ago)

Man, you're on fire today, Sarah.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 19:30 (twenty years ago)

it's awesome, though!

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 19:32 (twenty years ago)

Brittney's the one that brought it up!

And now she's going to remove it.

And sell it to get meth.

dan m (OutDatWay), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 19:52 (twenty years ago)

ha ha

Chicago, can I go home yet? It's actually chilly outside and I'm missing it.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 20:01 (twenty years ago)

It's raining, too.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 20:02 (twenty years ago)

i'm feeling overwhelmed. i want to go, but i have enough work to justify staying an hour late. yet, i can't muster up enough anything to really do much at all.

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 20:02 (twenty years ago)

I'm totally leaving early today, I've had 95% of my work done for like an hour.

dan m (OutDatWay), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 20:05 (twenty years ago)

i just feel like whining.

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 20:06 (twenty years ago)

Whine on! Let they who have whined not cast the first stone.

dan m (OutDatWay), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 20:07 (twenty years ago)

meh. i just feel tired & restless. i want out of here. i can't focus on work at the moment.

tell me about yourself, dan. what are some of your favorite things?

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 20:09 (twenty years ago)

Um, well, at the moment:

Yogurt
HBO shows on DVD
My new (old) car
the new C0nstant1nes album I got off of 1nd1et0rr3nts
being gainfully employed

That's just a few. In thinking about this I realized I'd probably find me really dull.

dan m (OutDatWay), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 20:17 (twenty years ago)

When are you all FAP-ing again? Saturday? I'd like to go to the Green Mill but I think my gf would kill me if I went when she couldn't?

dan m (OutDatWay), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 20:19 (twenty years ago)

I don't expect anyone to have an answer to that mis-labeled question.

dan m (OutDatWay), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 20:19 (twenty years ago)

accuweather.com says no rain after 5pm, but weather.com says 40% chance of rain from 4-9. hmmm.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 20:21 (twenty years ago)

isn't the next FAP sometime in August?

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 20:24 (twenty years ago)

Are you kidding? People who like yogurt are wilder than the wildest hyaenas. Off the hook wild!

Needless to say, I also enjoy yogurt, particularly when placed in a blender with frozen mango bits and a little bit of mango juice.

As for the outdoor movie, I recommend bringing some plastic to sit on. It appears to be raining downtown right now.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 20:25 (twenty years ago)

dan, i too am into yogurt. i have been eating it every single morning for breakfast.

in other news: ripping our your keys is satisfying, but not when it leaves you witha loud & notsogreat space bar.

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 20:28 (twenty years ago)

i was just going to ask if it was raining in the loop. :-(

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 20:33 (twenty years ago)

National Weather Service says there's a 90% chance of rain tonight.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 20:37 (twenty years ago)

I like yogurt cheese. On toast.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 20:38 (twenty years ago)

it's 20 minutes before 5. how can i best kill time & look like i'm working?

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 20:41 (twenty years ago)

I think you answered your own question.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 20:41 (twenty years ago)

Maddie and I are taking a 'comp day' tomorrow (well, a 'comp afternoon' for me). We might go to a ZOO.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 20:44 (twenty years ago)

which one?

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 20:45 (twenty years ago)

I want to go to the Milwaukee zoo (the zoo of my childhood), but it's a bit of a drive and some of our co-workers were dissing it the other day so it might be a hard sell.

The Madison zoo is okay, I guess. It's small and the animals look lonely.

Of course, it will probably be raining tomorrow anyway.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 20:48 (twenty years ago)

wow, thanks k! just think where i would have been tonight without the internet: sopping! in the rain! wow!

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 20:54 (twenty years ago)

It may be cooler outside, but it's hot as hell in my apartment still.

I take hourly showers.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 21:06 (twenty years ago)

It's hot as hell at work, too. The heat has finally outpaced the cooling power of non-profit window units on the fourth floor of a church.

UPCOMING FAPS:

1. Saturday, July 30 - Green Mill w/ Mama Digdown's Brass Band. Meeting at 7 PM or whenever.
2. Friday, August 5 (changable to Saturday, August 6 if more convenient to the majority) - Karaoke at the Hidden Cove. Meeting at 8 PM.

Thank you,

Chicago ILX Social Cordinator

I am FAILING hard at dispensing worker justice today, by the way. It's not entirely my fault, but it still feels bad. Thank god for the Hop Leaf. Beer is a good solvent for feelings of failure.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 21:21 (twenty years ago)

Raining heavily now. No movie for me tonight.

jadrenos (jadrenos), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 21:21 (twenty years ago)

Hey Jeff-PTTL check yers!

HEY Chicago ILXORS:

My work wants us to ask our friends and family for money tonight, as a fundraising strategy. So since I am unreasonably uncomfortable with that, I'm going to just say here that if you are one of the few people I know with money to spare and want to throw $20 of that toward worker justice, hit up my email and I'll send you a letter.

(Note: They are buying us pizza so I feel like I have to do something besides call my mom to earn my slice. Thanks.)

chicago-based chamber pop sextet keyboardist - w4m - 23
Date: 2005-07-26, 8:49PM CDT

i greatly enjoy your local band named after a card game, for which you are the keyboardist. you opened for my favourite band earlier in the month and ever since, i see you everywhere. i want to turn around and see you and go "hey! you're that guy from that local band. and you rock. and i think we should have adorable, curly haired, clarinet playing babies together." but i never do, because, well, i'm writing a missed connection, so i obviously have no backbone.

so, just so you know, and you can walk around the city thinking, 'some annonymous stranger thinks i'm cute" - you're cute.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 03:06 (twenty years ago)

!!!

Wow! That is neat. You are totally getting M-A-R-R-I-E-D.

giboyeux (skowly), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 03:14 (twenty years ago)

I am still at work. It is 11.15pm. I have been here for 15 hours. Hooray for the wonderful world of advertising!

giboyeux (skowly), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 03:14 (twenty years ago)

i wrote her a vague reply saying i was flattered but that it was weird to be writing to someone who was basically anonymous, so perhaps she might want to say a bit more about herself. i tried to strike a cautious but curious tone.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 03:16 (twenty years ago)

Good one.

giboyeux (skowly), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 03:20 (twenty years ago)

holy shit dude! but maybe she's talking about that other chamber pop band??

jeff send me an email and we can set up a time to look at my (edward) yang.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 04:52 (twenty years ago)

The reading was great. Just great. Especially Shalom Auslander, who was funny as hell, like I knew he would be. His book is great.

Thanks to Jeff and Jenny and Jess for coming out. You guys are all great.

BTW: I'm going to see a Brewers game with Haikunym on Friday, so I won't be able to come to the Nueva Cats/Fake Fictions show. :(

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 12:26 (twenty years ago)

John, You are in so much trouble! What do the Brewers even play? Sports over music? WTF? You're a big jock now. I never would have thought it. That's cute that you have a secret admirer though, so I forgive you... Or do I?

You know how I had $3 left to spread out over 6 days? Well, I didn't spend any money yesterday! So, now I have 60 cents a day to live on for the next 5 days, as opposed to 50 cents a day. BOO YA!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 12:48 (twenty years ago)

Booo! We're going to play like we're dosed on cough syrup! It's going to be great and trippy!

That's cool about the "missed connection." I love missed connections.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 12:49 (twenty years ago)

It would be sad if your mom wrote it though, just to cheer you up.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 12:49 (twenty years ago)

Wowza -- a secret admirer! I hope she's a good one. It takes chutzpah to place an ad like that despite the obligatory self-deprecation at the end. No backbone, I'm sure. If she had no backbone, she wouldn't be placing an ad. She would be drawing creepy sketches of you in her journal.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 12:57 (twenty years ago)

So which band is her favorite, I wonder? I hope it's Sloan, because that would mean she has good taste.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 12:58 (twenty years ago)

I'm sorry you missed the underwear discussion too, pullapartgirl! Sadly, I am no longer allowed to speak of underwear on the board or I will be in big trouble.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 13:04 (twenty years ago)

kenan, i didn't know Shalom Auslander was there! i would have come with bells on! Bells, I tell you!

kelsey (kelstarry), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 13:06 (twenty years ago)

pullapart . . . i'll talk underwear any time!
sarah, was it TMI or something?!

kelsey (kelstarry), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 13:07 (twenty years ago)

yeah, we're not allowed to talk about undiepants anymore? why the moratorium?

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 13:15 (twenty years ago)

Nick went all Ike Turner again.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 13:25 (twenty years ago)

I'm sorry. That wasn't really funny, was it?

Good morning, folks.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 13:26 (twenty years ago)

isn't today grand?

kelsey (kelstarry), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 13:27 (twenty years ago)

there is talk of Chicago bidding for the 2016 Olympics!

I think the more immediate issue is whether Richard "Soprano" Daley is going to have a job for much longer.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 13:28 (twenty years ago)

Today is glorious! Hey Kenan - your interview is today, isn't it? What time?

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 13:29 (twenty years ago)

xpost. Overheard on the train this morning: "This is Grand."

This is as good as that day in January when it got up to 60.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 13:29 (twenty years ago)

xpost. 3:00.

I'll try not to be sweaty.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 13:29 (twenty years ago)

3pm, huh. Well, if you want to meet for coffee (or decaf or whatever you people who don't drink coffee will consent to drink) or a donut or something let me know.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 13:31 (twenty years ago)

Thanks, but I'll be too busy shitting my pants.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 13:32 (twenty years ago)

if everyone ends up working on "that side" of the river, you could have lunch faps & whatnot.

kelsey (kelstarry), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 13:33 (twenty years ago)

Re: Underwear discourse. Yeah, I don't care. In fact, I wish I could show more people my underwear because I like them so much! But my bf (*cough cough*)... yeah. And it didn't help that I posted about this dream I had on my blog in which I tried to cheat on him. ha ha

Also, Nick, HI!!!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 13:37 (twenty years ago)

Sarah... um... be cool. I can feel the heat coming off of Nick's face from here.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 13:39 (twenty years ago)

But that's what dreams are for, to do things you would never do in real life.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 13:41 (twenty years ago)

Ha ha. He knows I love him.

It's so beautiful outside today! I really want to be out in it. Which reminds me, we might be going to summerdance tonight after all.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 13:42 (twenty years ago)

has anyone heard of this company called st0ry qu3st? they have job openings for sound producers & i'm tempted to apply even if it's a corporate version of what i want to be doing.

kelsey (kelstarry), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 13:51 (twenty years ago)

This morning IS glorious. Most pleasant bike ride to work of all time. I just felt bad when I showed up at 8.30 this morning and discovered that two other dudes had been here ALL NIGHT. It's like NIGHTMARE COLLEGE FINAL JOB.

It's hard to curry favor at your new job when (a) two of your coworkers pull an all nighter while you go home at midnight and (b) you inadvertantly win the office lottery game ($130!!!).

giboyeux (skowly), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 13:51 (twenty years ago)

The only way I would stay at work all night is if I was being continually fellated by Uma Thurman.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 13:59 (twenty years ago)

Do you have showers at work too? Because when Nick and I came up to visit his friend here (when we lived in VA), that's what his office was like.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 14:03 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, you're gonna need a shower after a night of Uma. A must.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 14:07 (twenty years ago)

No showers. Just bathrooms. Umas not included.

giboyeux (skowly), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 14:09 (twenty years ago)

Whoa whoa whoa giboyesuwusuxxxx. All fucking night? All the Ruth's Chris steak in the world isn't enough to make me want to stay at work all night. That reminds me of the olden days at the dot com when everything was a competition to see who could work themselves into exhaustion the fastest. Or like my first semester of law school, now that I think about it.

As soon as I finish my "personal statement" for this scholarship I'll never get and fold clothes, I'm going for a nice long bike ride. Yay for nice weather!

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 14:10 (twenty years ago)

Kenan, you should bring that up in your job interviews when they ask you what you're expecting from their benefits package.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 14:13 (twenty years ago)

hahaha
I'll do that.

Yay for bike rides!

I wonder how Jeff is doing right now... hopefully he's not sweaty.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 14:15 (twenty years ago)

I wasn't there all night, two other guys were. One of them was a cheese, too. From what I understand, this is NOT a normal occurence. Still. Kinda shitty.

But now I don't have any work to do! Maybe I will go home at lunch!

giboyeux (skowly), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 14:19 (twenty years ago)

1. Yeah, I'm sad I won't get to go the show, but Matt and I had plans for this baseball game for a while, the details just weren't ironed out, so I wasn't sure if it was still ON or not. However, depending on how late the game goes, it's possible I could be back in Chicago around 11:30 or midnight, so if I'm not too tired, I'll stop by Jody's.

2. I'm assuming her favorite band is Sloan because the only other show we've played this month has been with Neva Dinova, and I refuse to believe that Neva Dinova could be anyone's favorite band. Not that they're bad, but they'd just be an odd choice for an all-time favorite.

3. "That side" of the river: where is this job again? I have a feeling Amanda said something about being near Jackson, which is where I am right now. The sad thing is that in two months, my company will be moving to basically closer to the river -- in fact, right along the south bank.

4. Weather = awesome. I'm definitely going to Summerdance tonight. I'm gonna e-mail deej, and maybe scott pl.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 14:24 (twenty years ago)

The building is at Jackson and Wells.

Chicago GOP offers reward to convict mayor

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

CHICAGO -- The Cook County Republican Party is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to an indictment and conviction of Mayor Richard M. Daley, whose administration has been buffeted by scandal.

"The arrogance of Richard Daley is appalling," said Gary Skoien, chairman of the county party. "We hope this reward will inspire someone with critical knowledge to come forward."

Daley's press secretary, Jacqueline Heard, scoffed at the reward. "This is ridiculous, politically motivated and undeserving of any further comment," she said in a statement.

The reward follows last week's announcement by federal prosecutors that they had charged two City Hall officials with rigging the city's hiring system to get around a court order that bars officials from hiring employees for political reasons.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 14:27 (twenty years ago)

(xpost) I see. Three city blocks west of me, then.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 14:30 (twenty years ago)

i only say "that side" because i'm over on "this side." that's all.

kelsey (kelstarry), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 14:35 (twenty years ago)

I am at Jackson and Wells -- and I go to the HW Library at least three times a week on my lunch break, to pass time and look for books/movies/music. The library is near My Thai, where the pad kee mao is gross and wicked greasy, from what I remember.

Also, staying at work all night is the sort of bullshit that makes my heart hurt. No one should feel like they have to do that. It's inhumane. Then again, I'm not particularly competitive.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 14:37 (twenty years ago)

Also, staying at work all night is the sort of bullshit that makes my heart hurt. No one should feel like they have to do that.

Here's the thing, though: it's deadline stuff, like at a magazine. We're sending things to press.

giboyeux (skowly), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 14:42 (twenty years ago)

i've pulled almost all-nighters at my own job b/c of similar issues. just replace "sending off to press" with "going to air on the radio."

kelsey (kelstarry), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 14:47 (twenty years ago)

I am at Jackson and Wells -- and I go to the HW Library at least three times a week on my lunch break, to pass time and look for books/movies/music. The library is near My Thai, where the pad kee mao is gross and wicked greasy, from what I remember.

OH. I got to school at Jackson and State and I think that Thai place is in my school building. WE ARE LIKE NEIGHBORS. This means that when school starts, we could meet for lunch some time!

Gib, does that mean that when a deadline isn't looming, things are a little more relaxed? That's how it worked in the software days. Right before a "build" everybody would freak out and sleep under their desks and have terrible stress-related intestinal problems but then once it was over, we'd get to drink beer at our desks and play ping pong and shit.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 14:47 (twenty years ago)

I'm just not prone to last-minute work-blitzing, I guess. I never pulled all-nighters, even in college. Like I said, I don't really have the all-American work ethic. I'm also a dreaded morning person. So I guess that might have something to do with it.

Jenny -- lunch FAP is ON. All the way on. When does school start? I'm only taking one class in the fall. Do you go full time?

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 14:49 (twenty years ago)

That's how it worked in the software days. Right before a "build" everybody would freak out and sleep under their desks and have terrible stress-related intestinal problems but then once it was over, we'd get to drink beer at our desks and play ping pong and shit.

That sounds like my job. Just replace "build" with "release" and "beer and ping pong" with "ILX".

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 15:00 (twenty years ago)

Gib, does that mean that when a deadline isn't looming, things are a little more relaxed? That's how it worked in the software days. Right before a "build" everybody would freak out and sleep under their desks and have terrible stress-related intestinal problems but then once it was over, we'd get to drink beer at our desks and play ping pong and shit.

Exactly. The two guys that were up all night are leaving right after our presentation (to a client...BMW! oooh!). I will dawdle the day away on a press release and try to leave early. There will also be foos ball.

giboyeux (skowly), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 15:03 (twenty years ago)

Can I get in on this lunch FAP, at least before I move out of the area? I'm at Jackson and Michigan. We move to the new office around mid-September.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 15:16 (twenty years ago)

Worst signage award: MB bank, corner of Ashland and Division. Sign says:

Better.
Simpler.
Easier.
BETSIMPSIER!

And I always think to myself, I bet someone got paid for that. That breaks my heart.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 15:23 (twenty years ago)

you're on a roll today, thinspiration.

kelsey (kelstarry), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 15:24 (twenty years ago)

Oh that fucking sign!

dan m (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 15:25 (twenty years ago)

xpost - Get in on it! There will be either three or five of us, depending on Kenan's ability not to soil his trousers and the cars dot com people's ability to see that Nick is the guy they want to hire. but we could meet any day that anyone is bored and in the area.

that sign is an atrocity.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 15:27 (twenty years ago)

omg i just saw jaymc's missed connection!!

did you write her back!?!?!

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 15:28 (twenty years ago)

is anyone else sort of incredulous at the blase way jaymc is handling this? tales of secret admirers, please.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 15:33 (twenty years ago)

i am! but maybe it's because i've never had one!!

kelsey (kelstarry), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 15:34 (twenty years ago)

me neither, not a good one at least.

there was the weird, much older man who used to leave notes on my car. he left a sonic youth single once too, which is why i stuck around to meet him. he was creepy. he pegged his pants. he invited me over to his house for "spaghetti and a backrub."

Eew.ew.ew.ew.ew.ew.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 15:37 (twenty years ago)

how were those noodles?

kelsey (kelstarry), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 15:39 (twenty years ago)

sorry. i just made the gross grosser.

kelsey (kelstarry), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 15:39 (twenty years ago)

"And here's some sauce... whoops! I got it all over your blouse. Why don't you give that to me and I'll soak it."

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 15:41 (twenty years ago)

oh, i didn't GO to his house! i met him outside my car in the parking lot.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 15:41 (twenty years ago)

is anyone else sort of incredulous at the blase way jaymc is handling this?

I called Kelsey at 11 PM last night to tell her!

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 15:41 (twenty years ago)

She hasn't written back yet. Maybe she really just wants to be anonymous, though. I'm okay with that!

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 15:42 (twenty years ago)

ok. so you're only pretending to be cool? that's a relief.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 15:42 (twenty years ago)

He "pegged" his pants?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 15:42 (twenty years ago)

I have super-double-secret admirers.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 15:43 (twenty years ago)

Like, so secret they don't even know they admire me.

But I get them in their dreams, and in those dark places they never tell anyone about. I know I do.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 15:45 (twenty years ago)

any admirers i've had have come clean. at least, that i know of. not that it makes things any less awkward, though.

kelsey (kelstarry), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 15:46 (twenty years ago)

when was the pant pegged admirer, amanda? was the pegging really dated by then?

kelsey (kelstarry), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 15:47 (twenty years ago)

He "pegged" his pants?

yeah, he took the bottom of the leg, folded it over to be flush with his ankle, like sweatpants. then he rolled it up two times, to secure it. this was 1993, so no one did that anymore. did they? it was unsightly.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 15:49 (twenty years ago)

he also made me two mix tapes, gave me a pink teddy bear and wrote like 600 letters that he put on my car. i was 18, he was -- get this -- 30.

now i'm almost 30.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 15:49 (twenty years ago)

I do it on one leg when I have floppy pants and am riding my bike. Grease prevention.

Other than that, no excuse for it. Not even in 1993.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 15:50 (twenty years ago)

Postscript: Ten years later, my parents are enjoying a beer at the bar of a local restaurant. The bartender recognized them and said "I used to be friends with your daughter, Amanda."

It was him!

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 15:56 (twenty years ago)

when i was 18 i dated someone who was 36. i think more of the age difference now than i did then...

kelsey (kelstarry), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 15:58 (twenty years ago)

i think more of it now too; when this guy was leaving notes on my car, i wanted him to be cute so badly, but he WAS NOT CUTE. if he had been, i might have joined him for "spaghetti."

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 16:00 (twenty years ago)

i meant spaghetti, without the quotes.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 16:14 (twenty years ago)

i left a missed connection for this dude who sat next to me at the airport in dallas last week, but it was mostly a joke

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 16:18 (twenty years ago)

why "mostly"?

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 16:26 (twenty years ago)

When I was 20, I dated someone who was 40. And married!

Yeah, that was weird.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 16:29 (twenty years ago)

When I was 18, I dated someone who was 36. And my former English teacher. That was way weird.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 16:31 (twenty years ago)

How was the interview, Jeff?

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 16:32 (twenty years ago)

It went well. Really well.

It may also be the most stressful and frightening job that I could ever take. This law firm is the 6th largest in the nation, and they have very high expectations. The pay would be great, but I don't know if I could handle it.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 16:33 (twenty years ago)

okay so last week, at the dallas airport my itinerary said my flight was at 4, when really it was at 6.. so i had tons of time to kill, so i just walked all over that damn airport -- and i kept seeing this young, waifish conner obertsy emo following me around -- so, after a bit of walking, I just sat in a chair sort of where nobody else was, and he sat down RIGHT NEXT TO ME -- he didn't say anything, but kept looking at the book I was reading and he seemed antsy, and finally after about an hour of us reading together in silence, he got up and left

I FELT A RUHL DEEP CONNEXCTION

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 16:34 (twenty years ago)

ahhh, he was trying to force you to make the first move. classic obersty boy behavior. laaaaame. that's as lame as the "i'm just going to ignore you until you break up with me" move.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 16:37 (twenty years ago)

Men will never understand how much it sucks to be a pretty girl.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 16:37 (twenty years ago)

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 16:39 (twenty years ago)

Oh, mandee.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 16:42 (twenty years ago)

tragic, innit?

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 16:46 (twenty years ago)

I have just eaten at the Oasis Cafe for what I think will be the last time. Seriously, I've given that place a chance -- people are all, oh it's great, cheap Middle Eastern food in the middle of the Loop, and it's in the back of a jewelry mall, isn't that funny? But the hummus, which I got today, is never flavorful at all, and I believe I just had the driest baklava I've had in my life. If I'm getting baklava, I want it to be drizzled with honey. DRIZZLED I tell you. There was none of that. I fear I may have been spoiled by Pita Inn. (Ammy, you with me? Huh?)

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 16:48 (twenty years ago)

Hi Mandee!

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 16:51 (twenty years ago)

I've never had a secret admirer, except for the ones that outed themselves and ended up in long term relationships with me.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 16:53 (twenty years ago)

Oh hey Jordan, I'm def. coming to the Green Mill on Saturday. I will be bringing an ex-girlfriend, so get ready for DRAMA!!! No, seriously, it's just Renee, whom some of you have met. She's taking the bar this week and needs to get drunk and listen to jazz this weekend.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 16:56 (twenty years ago)

Hi Jordan! How's Wisconsin?

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 16:57 (twenty years ago)

I had a couple of admirers in high school, including two sophomore girls in my journalism class when I was a senior. One of them was kind of annoying, but the other was really sweet. She made me cupcakes on my birthday and wrote a poem about me and let me borrow her Lush CD. She was cute, too. I sometimes wonder if I should've paid more attention to her.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 16:59 (twenty years ago)

Excellent!

Wisconsin is awesome. I took the afternoon off and Maddie and I are going to the zoo, and then we may make calzones from scratch.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 16:59 (twenty years ago)

Jaymc, is this her?

Yes. I mean, no.

I just realized that this is my Weekend of Wisconsin ILXORS.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 17:01 (twenty years ago)

I sometimes wonder if I should've paid more attention to her.

Man, she's a heartbreaker. She'd have done the same to any guy. You gotta let het go, man.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 17:02 (twenty years ago)

i have an admirer at work, i think.. he is master of sauces (seriously--he like concocts all the condiments for our stores), and he goes out of his way to say stuff to me (some of it really strange, i.e. on random day, "hey, was it your birthday a few weeks ago? did you have brownies? are you amanda?! those brownies were good!"), and he always stares at my boobs.

or maybe i'm imagining it.

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 17:05 (twenty years ago)

(xpost) Actually, I ran into her again a few years ago, since she ended up going to Loyola and apparently lived really close to my brother, when he was still on campus. She seemed much less shy than she was in high school and a little more glammed up. Also, she'd reclaimed her birth name (Umnia, instead of Amy) (she was Pakistani, I think?) and was into Jill Scott instead of grunge.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 17:07 (twenty years ago)

My sister is taking the bar right now! She started taking it yesterday. I can't imagine a test that takes TWO DAYS. (in VA of course)

Cupcakes! I once made a boy chocolate chip cookies. I was in 6th grade. It was a Christmas present. Then I found out from someone else that he thought they were burnt and gave the entire jar (I put them in a large mason jar and tied a bow around it) to Jeremiah, our class's resident fat kid. :-(

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 17:19 (twenty years ago)

Ooh, I would love to date a saucier.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 17:22 (twenty years ago)

oooooh baby.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 17:23 (twenty years ago)

My sister is taking the bar right now! She started taking it yesterday.

Is everyone taking it nationwide? Cuz Renee is taking it right now, too. She's worried that she fucked up on the writing parts yesterday, but feels more confident with the multiple-choice section today.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 17:24 (twenty years ago)

My ex coworker's boyfriend is taking the bar in Michigan right now.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 17:32 (twenty years ago)

YOU GUYS. I'm not doing anything today, and probably most of tomorrow, except STUFFING ENVELOPES. Also, I swear I once started a thread called "Stuffin' Envelopes" but it seems to have disappeared. Maybe it was all a dream, a wonderful boring dream.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 17:36 (twenty years ago)

I still have those days, Nick. You're not alone. We're with you in spirit.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 17:37 (twenty years ago)

Also I would like to buy the film rights to Mandee's story and turn it into a romantic comedy starring John Cusack and Mandy Moore.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 17:41 (twenty years ago)

i used to have to proofread address labels and it was one of the most mind-numbing activities i've ever done, maybe worse than stuffing envelopes.

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 17:42 (twenty years ago)

its already in that movie RED EYE, practically, nick!!

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 17:45 (twenty years ago)

I have never heard of that movie. Was the sequel called PINK EYE?

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 17:47 (twenty years ago)

Also I would like to buy the film rights to Mandee's story and turn it into a romantic comedy starring John Cusack and Mandy Moore.

If you buy the film rights to my story, I would like to cast Philip Seymour Hoffman as the dude who left notes on my car. Because PSH is way way way more attractive than the real guy was. I don't know who to cast as me. Rosie Perez? That would be an delightfully horrible movie.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 17:49 (twenty years ago)

BROWN EYE

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 17:49 (twenty years ago)

no one has ever told me which celebrity i look like. i don't look like no one.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 18:07 (twenty years ago)

someone told me i reminded him of mr. peepers once. that wasn't flattering. remember mr. peepers? the crazy monkey?

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 18:09 (twenty years ago)

john. where are ya, buddy?

kelsey (kelstarry), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 18:10 (twenty years ago)

Yes, it is time.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 18:11 (twenty years ago)

I'll think of one for Amanda. I did realize that her voice reminds me of Sarah Hadl3y, who is nobody famous except for being the wife of R0b Busc3mi and the woman who takes all of Canasta's press photos.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 18:11 (twenty years ago)

i take that back -- one time someone told me i looked the girl who played blossom. that's right, blossom. i saw her on the el once though. i did. she was on a brown line train and i was on the red line. she made these "chugga-chugga i'm on a train" movements with her arms and i looked at her like "is that blossom? is she making chugga chugga train motions...at me?"

and then she started laughing like crazy and the train took off.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 18:15 (twenty years ago)

You look nothing like Mayim Bialik.

Who incidentally is in a forthcoming low-budget movie called Kalamazoo, set in the very town where Kelsey and I attended college.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 18:20 (twenty years ago)

J3ff Patters0n has a small role.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 18:24 (twenty years ago)

that's crazy. mostly i remember him performing drunk at monkapult.

kelsey (kelstarry), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 18:31 (twenty years ago)

He also played an American soldier fighting in Iraq in a short film that aired on Showtime last fall.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 18:32 (twenty years ago)

Someone you know?

Someone (jaymc), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 18:33 (twenty years ago)

Oh yeah, just some guy we went to college with.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 18:33 (twenty years ago)

i went from drinking no soda to suddenly NEEDING it on a daily basis.

kelsey (kelstarry), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 18:38 (twenty years ago)

You guys went to K College? A good friend of mine went there, too. In fact, jaymc, I'm pretty sure she dated (get ready for several degrees of seperation) the bass player from the band that your current guitar player was in back in the U.P. That dude went to K too, IIRC.

dan m (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 18:49 (twenty years ago)

Kalamazoo is my favorite Lower Peninsula town, by the way. Man, I know Bell's is kind of played out there, but that is gooooood beer.

dan m (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 18:50 (twenty years ago)

What's her name, Dan? When did she graduate?

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 18:52 (twenty years ago)

That talking-to-myself bit may rank among the dumbest things I've done on ILX.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 18:53 (twenty years ago)

A11is0n Br0wn (Now R31mann) and I think she graduated in 2000 or 2001.

xpost

dan m (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 18:53 (twenty years ago)

shit we probably know her.

kelsey (kelstarry), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 18:55 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, that sounds dead familiar.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 18:57 (twenty years ago)

Last time I was in Kzoo was last summer for her wedding. She married another K alum, and the reception was in this modern art museum. Getting drunk there was a hell of a time.

xpost: something something, it's a small world after all

dan m (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 18:58 (twenty years ago)

I'm actually disappointed I can't put a name to the face immediately, though! It being such a small school and all. I was hoping to be like, oh yeah, she was in my intro to sociology class and always hung out with so-and-so.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 19:00 (twenty years ago)

AlumNet tells me that she definitely graduated in 2000 (i.e., with us) and was a bio major (well, that might explain why we don't know her).

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 19:04 (twenty years ago)

There's someone I keep picturing, though. Dark hair. She might've been in choir?

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 19:07 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, dark hair. I'm not sure if she was in choir, though. She definitely dated one of those yooper dudes, 'cause I was down with some other friends visiting during freshman year and we heard all about it.

dan m (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 19:09 (twenty years ago)

We got drunk in her dorm room and then watched some bands play in like the student union I think. One of them had this wacky dude playing trombone or something if memory serves. They may or may not have been a ska band, picking it up and picking it up.

dan m (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 19:10 (twenty years ago)

HAHAHAHAHAHA

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 19:11 (twenty years ago)

Illustrious Skunk!!!!

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 19:11 (twenty years ago)

That's the one.

dan m (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 19:12 (twenty years ago)

probably dave what'shisname.

kelsey (kelstarry), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 19:13 (twenty years ago)

HOSSLER

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 19:13 (twenty years ago)

I feel like we've shared something now.

dan m (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 19:16 (twenty years ago)

Do you also recall if a band called Three Hands Clapping performed? (The drummer is in my band now.)

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 19:34 (twenty years ago)

I wish I could say for sure. There were three bands that night, I think.

dan m (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 19:35 (twenty years ago)

Must have been that Illustrious Skunk just blew everyone else off the stage...

dan m (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 19:35 (twenty years ago)

I don't even remember if I was there. I might've been.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 19:39 (twenty years ago)

i'm pretty sure i was there. at QUAD STOP!!

kelsey (kelstarry), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 19:41 (twenty years ago)

At any rate, maybe we've monopolized the thread long enough with Kzoo talk. But shit like this is another reason I need to meet you guys one of these fucking days. I blame my own shyness for it not happening yet. Oh, and heatstroke.

dan m (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 19:46 (twenty years ago)

When someone got here for his interview, I went to the lobby to say hi and someone didn't recognize me.

I scurried away.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 19:51 (twenty years ago)

I mean, I waited until he remembered who I am, then I said hi, then I scurried away.

giboyeux (skowly), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 20:46 (twenty years ago)

the war against terra has reached us where it hurts: the workplace. bombings during interviews? what is this world coming to?

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 20:54 (twenty years ago)

How'd it go K?

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 21:28 (twenty years ago)

GREAT. That is, until I met the last interviewer, the big boss. Then I freaked out. Total deer-in-the-headlighrs action. I was terrified of her.

But up until then, very relaxed and comfortable and I nailed all the questions and I'm so qualified for this job it ain't funny. Now I have only two things to worry about: that the boss didn't like me, and that stupid background check. I would not be surprised if either of those things killed the deal for me.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 22:17 (twenty years ago)

Classes start Aug. 22 but I'm in the loop enough to meet up before then, particularly if it's on a Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday.

Congrats, Kenan!

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Thursday, 28 July 2005 00:04 (twenty years ago)

Yay Jenny, Wednesdays are good for me, but pretty much any day is alright. I can only take an hour though. :( Rather, I'm required to take an hour.

K - I'm glad it went well! What did you think of the office? The overwhelming greyness of it? Pardon my strange behavior. I felt like I might have popped in a bad time. Typical.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 28 July 2005 00:29 (twenty years ago)

Hi, I'm back at work. Don't worry, I'm not pulling a giboyeux: I came back to get my bag (which I left in my cubicle) after Summerdance, but now I think I am going to try to do some writing before I get too tired. And then I'll go home.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 28 July 2005 01:36 (twenty years ago)

To all the doubters (I'm looking at you, Keenan), The Changeling is a very solid ghost story. I was skeered at least four different times.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Thursday, 28 July 2005 03:04 (twenty years ago)

I doubt everything. It's a bad habit.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Thursday, 28 July 2005 03:59 (twenty years ago)

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 28 July 2005 05:09 (twenty years ago)

Yup! It was fun!

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 28 July 2005 05:27 (twenty years ago)

Although deej warns me that the girl I was flirting/dancing with is bad news.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 28 July 2005 05:27 (twenty years ago)

bad news = slutty and easy. no?

aksel is so adorable, isnt he?

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 28 July 2005 05:29 (twenty years ago)

he certainly is. he was wearing a ridiculously low v-neck.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 28 July 2005 05:37 (twenty years ago)

it was kinda awkward since i suspect he has a crush on my best friend and maybe was trying to talk to her while i was somewhat conciously trying to cockblock and also being insanely jealous at the same time. but he was wearing this adorable french-sailor sort of outfit. i just wanted to pinch his cheeks

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 28 July 2005 05:49 (twenty years ago)

it was a not bad set. i wrote on ilm. but he played timecode (which i think i put on nick & sarah's techno mix), brutalga square, international pony "our house" TWICE, and ended with his remix of m83. i was hoping for the MFA remix, but alas.

btw, if u dont have, go find those tracks mentioned. all so so so so so good

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 28 July 2005 05:51 (twenty years ago)

the only tracks i recognized were "timecode" (which was the best) and then he closed with "tenderness." i don't know "brutalga square" or "our house," i don't think?

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 28 July 2005 05:55 (twenty years ago)

wait, "tenderness"? do i mean "happiness"? i don't think so. but i know i recognized it...

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 28 July 2005 06:01 (twenty years ago)

no, okay, it was "happiness." yes.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 28 July 2005 06:03 (twenty years ago)

We were there too. It was fun. But mostly I enjoyed watching all the "serious" dancers (read: young white b-boys and aging ravers) dance.

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 28 July 2005 12:49 (twenty years ago)

Even though I've met djdee twice, I feel like I have yet to "meet" him.

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 28 July 2005 13:00 (twenty years ago)

Why didn't I go to this? I never know what's going on.

giboyeux (skowly), Thursday, 28 July 2005 13:05 (twenty years ago)

Aksel was cute. I assumed it would be spelled Axel. Anyway, he kept doing funny little dances accentuating the beeps and beats. He was definitely not one of those hold-one-side-of-the-headphones-to-your-head-and-just-stand-there-looking-serious types.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Thursday, 28 July 2005 13:17 (twenty years ago)

I'll admit it right now, I know nothing about DJing and its associate subculture. Is this the "krumpy" I've been hearing about?

dan m (OutDatWay), Thursday, 28 July 2005 13:19 (twenty years ago)

ain't no shame dan -- i don't know anything about it either. i do know that krumping has something to do with david lachapelle and clowns.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 28 July 2005 13:21 (twenty years ago)

I didn't witness any krumping. From what I understand, it would have stood out a bit. I did see a lot of breakdancing, a little bumpin' and grindin', and some LOTR looking dude with a long ponytail, shorts, sandles, with pale skin and a black t-shirt doing some sort of dance he seemed to have invented.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 28 July 2005 13:31 (twenty years ago)

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 28 July 2005 13:43 (twenty years ago)

What is krumping? Jesse and I do an awesome Kid n' Play dance together. It's very... energetic.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Thursday, 28 July 2005 13:56 (twenty years ago)

Even though I've met djdee twice, I feel like I have yet to "meet" him.

True, although we keep meeting at places with loud danceable music, which might be part of it.

deej.., Thursday, 28 July 2005 14:20 (twenty years ago)

krumping!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 28 July 2005 14:32 (twenty years ago)

Oh! How interesting! Do you have to be supernaturally fit and very shiny or is that part optional?

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Thursday, 28 July 2005 14:36 (twenty years ago)

Amanda, I just talked to my co-worker that you know to tell her that I know you and we agreed that you are totally great and very "hip." And then I found out that another person who works on the national side of the office was indie-rocking it up at Intonation, including rolling around in the dirt for Les Savy Fav, but she's leaving Chicago forever on August 12 and we'll never be friends now.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Thursday, 28 July 2005 14:38 (twenty years ago)

I don't know, but I still want to see that documentary so I can study up.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 28 July 2005 14:39 (twenty years ago)

You know what song I've had stuck in my head all morning? Of course you don't.

I've got Jungle Fever! You've got Jungle Fever!

That's it. I don't know the words, obviously, so I just keep singing those two lines over and over in my head.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 28 July 2005 14:48 (twenty years ago)

She's gone black boy crazy, he's gone white girl hazy... they're in love.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Thursday, 28 July 2005 14:51 (twenty years ago)

my big dilemma of the day: to eat the frozen pot pie i brought or go to potbelly?
i think i think about food way too much . . .

kelsey (kelstarry), Thursday, 28 July 2005 14:52 (twenty years ago)

xpost - Oh kristi. i think i'll call her this weekend. i miss her. maybe she'll come to the green mill with me. she always has plans like three months in advance though.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 28 July 2005 14:55 (twenty years ago)

I have a crush on Potbelly. And it's not even that amazing! It's like a better Subway.

Cold Comfort deli on North Ave, on the other hand. OMG.

giboyeux (skowly), Thursday, 28 July 2005 14:58 (twenty years ago)

i can always eat the pot pie for dinner.

kelsey (kelstarry), Thursday, 28 July 2005 14:59 (twenty years ago)

I requested "Jungle Fever" at my 8th grade graduation dance!! They didn't have it. :(

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 28 July 2005 15:01 (twenty years ago)

Potbelly makes me feel gross, but I've only eaten there once or twice ever.

I think about food tous les temps. I didn't have breakfast today and just ate my pretzels. I'm STARVING! And I only have a PBH left for lunchtime. Boo hoo.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 28 July 2005 15:01 (twenty years ago)

(xpost) They didn't have "Breakin' My Heart (Pretty Brown Eyes)" by Mint Condition, either.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 28 July 2005 15:01 (twenty years ago)

HOLY SHIT I have Jungle Fever stuck in my head now! My brain is like an ear bug magnet. That Cabrini Green thread had me singing the theme to Good Times for three days.

I like Potbelly's because it's cheap as HELL and not terrible. My favorite sandwich place in the loop is Fontano's on State and Jackson right across from DePaul. They have the most east coast-esque subs I've eaten since I moved away from the east cost.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Thursday, 28 July 2005 15:04 (twenty years ago)

I like Potbelly, but I can't have it too often.

I just realized that in the last week, I have become one of those people who skips breakfast because they "don't have time." I used to hate those people, I used to think breakfast was as essential to my morning routine as putting on my pants. I guess it'd be different if I actually had any food in my house, though. Because now it's like, do I get a crappy muffin from Dunkin Donuts or do I just wait until lunch?

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 28 July 2005 15:04 (twenty years ago)

I've never been to Fontano's, even though it's a block away from me and I walk by it all the time. Do they have anything veggie-friendly there?

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 28 July 2005 15:04 (twenty years ago)

(I guess I just assumed they wouldn't.)

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 28 July 2005 15:05 (twenty years ago)

I think I'll go home for lunch and make my own pizza with the ingredients leftover from our calzones last night. Decadence!

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 28 July 2005 15:06 (twenty years ago)

xpost: They have an all cheese sub and an eggplant parmesan sandwich. No veggie burgers or anything like that, though. But if you have a hankerin' for a hoagie, I think the all cheese with provolone, lettuce, tomato, pickles, onions, and hot peppers is pretty unstoppable. But I could eat provolone cheese all day and be fairly content with my life.

Lucky girl that I am, Jeff made chicken picatta last night and I have leftovers for lunch today. YAY!

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Thursday, 28 July 2005 15:10 (twenty years ago)

I just didn't have breakfast because none of the options at home seemed appealing. I should have just made oatmeal again.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 28 July 2005 15:11 (twenty years ago)

i've gotten into this habit of buying yogurt at the grocery store near work & sprinkling some trader joe's ginger granola on it & having that for breakfast. a couple of weeks ago, i ate nothin' but crumpets for breakfast.

i don't eat bfast before i leave the house, but after the bike ride in, i'm pretty hungry, so i like to have stuff on hand.

kelsey (kelstarry), Thursday, 28 July 2005 15:14 (twenty years ago)

i used to make my own calzones all the time, before i had three jobs.
waaaaaah. my calzones were good too.

last night i made black bean soup though, so that was good.

also, i eat the exact same thing for breakfast every morning. granola with yogurt. sometimes with strawberries/blueberries and yogurt.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 28 July 2005 15:14 (twenty years ago)

I just realized that in the last week, I have become one of those people who skips breakfast because they "don't have time."

Me too. I didn't use to be this way. However, much of this has to do with the fact that I'm living w/20 yr old stoners that have the dirtiest kitchen ON THE PLANET. And I have all these groceries! Languishing! Until Saturday, at least, when I move into my new apartment. Huzzah.

Today, to make up for it, I am going to the Golden Nugget for lunch.

giboyeux (skowly), Thursday, 28 July 2005 15:15 (twenty years ago)

I like to make regular oatmeal and then dump a bunch of frozen mixed berries in it. It's tasty and healthy and PURPLE!

If I don't eat breakfast I'm a miserable wreck by 10:30.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Thursday, 28 July 2005 15:16 (twenty years ago)

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Thursday, 28 July 2005 15:20 (twenty years ago)

I never eat breakfast. Sometimes I don't eat lunch either. Or dinner. Yesterday all I ate was two Filet o'Fish sandwiches and a small fries. That was at about 2pm.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Thursday, 28 July 2005 15:22 (twenty years ago)

I need to go on the Kenan diet. Instead, I am on the "EAT FOOD NOW ALL THE TIME" diet. I'm going to get some trim spa or street drugs or whatever made Anna Nicole Smith go from fat, trashy, slut to dangerously thin, trashy slut.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Thursday, 28 July 2005 15:24 (twenty years ago)

kenan, didn't that probably use up most of your daily caloric intake?

kelsey (kelstarry), Thursday, 28 July 2005 15:25 (twenty years ago)

I HAVE To have breakfast. It's stupid when I don't eat breakfast. I get all fainty and pathetic. And it doesn't help that I drink coffee every morning. Like, today for example.

I LOVE granola and yogurt. When I get paid again, I'm going to buy some fresh fruit (and granola and yogurt). I tried to get some Low Fat granola one time and it was grody. I'll find you the one I normally get...

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 28 July 2005 15:35 (twenty years ago)

kelsey, have you ever been to L'appetito? it's close to where you work, one on Huron on the way to the Whole Foods, another in Watertower, by the Cheesecake Factory. it's not bad!

I'm amazed at how quickly I've gotten..."soft." I need to start exercising again. Anyone want to learn kung fu with me?

giboyeux (skowly), Thursday, 28 July 2005 15:38 (twenty years ago)

I am Sarah re: breakfast and the terrible things skipping it does to me.

Hey Kesley, I just read that you like Lush sandlewood deodorant in that deodorant thread. Is it still working for you? I was thinking about trying some when my shampoo bar runs out and I have to make another Lush run.

xpost: YES I DO WANT TO LEARN KUNG FU WITH YOU! I used to take Shaolin Kung Fu in Delaware and it was fucking awesome! I moved to Atlanta just before we started working with staffs, but man did I love those classes. There's a Shaolin studio off the Wilson stop on the Red Line but they are always closed when I call.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Thursday, 28 July 2005 15:40 (twenty years ago)

I also have to eat something for breakfast, or I get cranky. Weekday breakfast is either cereal, toast, or yogurt & granola. If I leave the house without eating, I usually stop by the coffee shop and get a bagel or muffin or croissant with my coffee. If I get to work and I still haven't eaten, then a vending machine pop tart is my last resort.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 28 July 2005 15:43 (twenty years ago)

When I worked downtown I ate a lot of Sopprafina, usually their mushroom panini. But, for a while I was addicted to the spinach calzones at the Venice cafe.

Have I mentioned lately I'm sooo glad not to be working downtown any more?

dan m (OutDatWay), Thursday, 28 July 2005 15:44 (twenty years ago)

I can't find a pic of the granola I like! It's probably a grocery store brand or something (Cub) ha ha. But I always get the large tub of dannon lowfat vanilla yog.

I'm soft all over. I'm an old softie. I'm scared of kung fu though. I took a self defense class in college. I bruise really easily, so I looked a bit like a corpse that semester.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 28 July 2005 15:44 (twenty years ago)

If I get to work and I still haven't eaten, then a vending machine pop tart is my last resort.

There used to be a little convenience store in the lobby of my building, and many a time I would walk into work and get an orange juice, banana and/or muffin. But they closed last month, and nothing has replaced it. :(

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 28 July 2005 15:45 (twenty years ago)

I eat all-bran with spenda sprinkeled on it, with a banana and a diet coke EVERY morning. It keeps me regular.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Thursday, 28 July 2005 15:47 (twenty years ago)

Diet Coke? Ugh.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 28 July 2005 15:48 (twenty years ago)

Coke Zero! Because one calorie is too many!

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Thursday, 28 July 2005 15:49 (twenty years ago)

From what I recall, the early kung fu classes don't involve a lot of contact with other humans. We just learned different forms and how to hold the "horse position" (like a squat, or sitting on an invisible chair) for so long that it feels like your legs are going to fall off. I don't think people sparred until they got all the forms down, and by the time you get the forms down, you were all hard from sitting in the damn horse pose all the time. Note: I moved before I got past the forms learning.

I took one Aikido class in Greensboro and didn't like it very much. There were lots of little kids in the class and the first thing we had to do was touch strangers and pretend to spar. I don't like touching strangers.

xpost: Diet Coke has zero calories already!

i dont wake up until 11 or get to work until 1, but i dont eat breakfast (lunch?) before i get there, and theres absolutely nothing to eat within a few blocks of our office building, except the halal food cart guy but there's only so many plates of halal chicken & rice one can eat in a week.. so im often really tired and/or grumpy by 3pm which is when i beg my boss to buy me a pizza or to get a sandwich delivered, or i take a nap, or i rummage thru my wallet and pockets hoping to find some leftover drugs to keep me awake. this is probably one reason why i'm so skinny.

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 28 July 2005 16:04 (twenty years ago)

They have their web address on the front of the building and I can't remember what it is. I googled "shaolin kung fu broadway chicago" and got this place, but it's off the Sheridan stop and the one I'm thinking of is definitely off Wilson.

Iron Fist International
Shaolin Kung Fu
3848 N. Broadway, 2nd
Chicago Illinois USA
Dino Spencer
773-435-FIST
ironfistint@aol.com

I'll keep looking. I'll also go by there today on the way to a worker justice hoe down in the loop this afternoon and I'll write down the website address. I left the place a bunch of phone messages and sent them an email asking when they were open so I could come in and do what I had to do to take classes and nobody ever replied. I hope it's not because I'm a GURL because then I will kick their ass, White Crane Style skillz or no.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Thursday, 28 July 2005 16:06 (twenty years ago)

I dunno, Jenny - Dino Spencer sounds like one tough kung fu hustla. 435-FIST! hiyaaa!

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 28 July 2005 16:13 (twenty years ago)

The place I called says SHAOLIN KUNG FU across the front and is next to the pizza place that Kenan hates because it's dirty inside and there's always a crotch-rocket motorcycle parked intside the metal storefront security grate thing.

The guy in charge where I took classes in Delaware was named Iron Palm Master Brian Gray. We were supposed to call him Sensei but I always called him Iron Palm Master Brian Gray because that's hilarious.

Yeah, I know. Some of the "powers that be" have a big problem with nutritional food. Why, just yesterday I was in the college bookstore and found some weirdo woman scrutinizing the nutritional information in all of the snacks. When I asked her to move so that I could buy a snack, she didn't budge, she just kept blocking me.

I can't stand puritanical uptight weirdos who obsess on the content of food.

Carol Stream (dymaxia), Thursday, 28 July 2005 16:18 (twenty years ago)

Haha. The martial arts teacher I had when I was a kid was awesome, he was this Mexican guy with an eye-patch (eye lost from childhood knife fights, I believe). His daughter was superhot, too.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 28 July 2005 16:31 (twenty years ago)

Hey, I was thinking about Sarah's complaint from the other day about co-workers who say "SMILE!" -- and it reminded me of bosses who, as you come back to the office with your lunch, say some variation on "Where's mine?" or "Is that for me?" I have no idea how to respond to this. I mean, of course it's not for you, you nitwit -- what do you want, a witty retort? Usually, I just shrug and feel like a jackass.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 28 July 2005 16:33 (twenty years ago)

ME TOO! There's like no way to respond to that without either sounding like a horrible selfish food-hoarding monster or taking the very real risk that you will have to give up half your lunch, something that I, as a horrible selfish food-hoarding monster, am not generally apt to do.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Thursday, 28 July 2005 16:40 (twenty years ago)

I think the appropriate response to that would be to laugh. Laugh HYSTERICALLY. Double over. Start sobbing with laughter. Fall on the floor. Between big sobbing bursts of laughter, say, "Oh, Jesus, I'm going to pee!" And then just stop altogether, pick up your lunch, and walk away without another word.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Thursday, 28 July 2005 16:43 (twenty years ago)

I'm actually at a show right now.

dan m (OutDatWay), Thursday, 28 July 2005 16:46 (twenty years ago)

When people say that to me, I usually snarl and start furiously shoving food in my mouth like a feral child.

There's a girl at my office who is constantly offering us the remainder of her lunch. A nice thought, but no thanks on the soggy fries.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 28 July 2005 16:47 (twenty years ago)

I can't even eat soggy fries when they're the remainder of my own lunch.

real quick b/c i have a meeting in t-minus 5 minutes . . .

jenny: the deodorant is AWESOME. have them cut you a small piece to try if you want. i love it. sometimes i have to switch up to another kind for a couple of days just so my pits don't get too used to it.

HAHA! That's such a complete 180 from how you actually act and look that it's really hilarious to think about.

Kelsey, I am beside myself with excitement and am going to start washing my hair four times a day so I have to go back to the Lush store sooner. Although Jeff is crazy for the Honey I Washed the Kids soap and we're almost out of soup in general so maybe we can make an extra trip.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Thursday, 28 July 2005 17:09 (twenty years ago)

Confusing soap and soup could lead to gastrointestinal distress.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Thursday, 28 July 2005 17:11 (twenty years ago)

I go to shows alot becuase that's why I moved to Chicago. I mean, it's a beautiful city in many ways, yes, but deep down it was all for the music scene.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 28 July 2005 17:12 (twenty years ago)

I know nothing about this Lush place.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 28 July 2005 17:12 (twenty years ago)

I want pits that smell like sandalwood. And orange. And maybe even patchouli, although we went over that before. Does anyone else love the word "pits" as much as I do? What a cute little word for such a weird body part.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 28 July 2005 17:15 (twenty years ago)

Cute? I think it's the pits.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Thursday, 28 July 2005 17:15 (twenty years ago)

HA! I said soup. No wonder my head smells like cream of tomato.

Sarah, Lush is a place where you should never go when you're being a good, budget-minded citizen, particularly if you share my weakness for hoarding luxurious amounts of good smelling health and beauty products.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Thursday, 28 July 2005 17:16 (twenty years ago)

bosses who, as you come back to the office with your lunch, say some variation on "Where's mine?" or "Is that for me?"

Confusing soap and soup could lead to gastrointestinal distress.

Did I ever tell you guys about the Spanish teacher I had in high school? Loony woman. Not that bright. Anyway, in Spanish the word for soap is "jabon," and the word for soup is "sopa." So my teacher asks some kid (in Spanish), "what do you wash yourself with?" And the kid says, mistakenly, "la sopa." To which my teacher replies: "La sopa?! You wash yourself with soup? What are you, a Chinaman?"

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 28 July 2005 17:26 (twenty years ago)

hahahahah. oh dear. that's funny.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 28 July 2005 17:28 (twenty years ago)

I'm still trying to figure out where on earth she learned this stereotype that Chinese people wash themselves with soup.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 28 July 2005 17:29 (twenty years ago)

Oh come on, everyone knows that.

dan m (OutDatWay), Thursday, 28 July 2005 17:30 (twenty years ago)

That reminds me of an even worse joke that a guy I used to work with was fond of. I worked at this super busy Italian restaurant back home, and when a waitress or someone would ask "How long for table X?" He would invariably say "How Long is a Chinaman." This of course got funnier and funnier after the ten thousandth time I heard it...

dan m (OutDatWay), Thursday, 28 July 2005 17:32 (twenty years ago)

It's a gross stereotype that Chinamen wash themselves with soup. Only Koreans do that. THEY ARE NOT THE SAME, PEOPLE. GET ONE CULTURAL EDUCATION.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Thursday, 28 July 2005 17:33 (twenty years ago)

Koreans wash themselves with soup. Chinese people put pee pee in your coke.

Got it.

Koreans should check out the awesome soup they sell at Lush.

just popping in on the thread to ask if anyone else has seen the ridiculously awesome brass band that plays usually on state street? hypnotic is their name. they've got cd's for sale (which i've never bought but i drop a couple dollars in the bucket whenever i see em). they totally rule and make me love this city even more than i already do.

if you haven't look out for them. they were at state and washington (i believe) like an hour ago.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 28 July 2005 18:10 (twenty years ago)

My Dad loves to refer to Twisted Sister whenever he's making fun of rock music in general. I think that's one of the only band names he knows post-1970.

xposts - We've stopped to watch them before. They are enjoyable.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 28 July 2005 18:12 (twenty years ago)

M1ss Fl0w is probably my least favorite busker. She just sings (and not very well) over R&B karaoke tracks, often at the Jackson red line stop. And pushes her website.

There is also the guy with the shaker egg who sings R&B oldies and has a nice voice but still irritates the shit out of me for some reason. Then one day, the train was about 20 minutes late and he insisted on singing over the garbled announcements regarding where the hell the train was. Fuck that dude.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Thursday, 28 July 2005 18:14 (twenty years ago)

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 28 July 2005 18:17 (twenty years ago)

as far as buskers go, there's one guy who stands at the wells st. bridge in the morning (or at least used to) with his guitar. and he always looks like he just took a break or is about to start playing. but i've never seen him strum or pluck a single string. if it's cold, he's shifting his weight or blowing on his hands. if it's warm, he's shifting his weight or blowing on his hands. great stuff. but i've never given him a dime.

as for the hypnotic cd, is it as good as they are live?

They're not really New Orleans-style, i.e. they have a drumset player and are more into jazzy arranging than solos, but I heard a couple things off their cd that I liked. I think my brass band discussed playing some shows with them at some point.

(oops) on discussing the nature of the admirer. i guess i got carried away thinking about how anyone could be watching anyone at any time. it's kind of creepy when you think how easy it is.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 29 July 2005 13:37 (twenty years ago)

also, the talk about admirers made me think about how many friends i have who have been stalked by colossally creepy people. i admit it. i'm paranoid. there, i said it.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 29 July 2005 13:41 (twenty years ago)

I see.

In other news, I'm a filing cowgirl today.
Filing, Filing, Filing, Rawhide!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 29 July 2005 13:41 (twenty years ago)

i have to file a ton of stuff too.

also, i apologize for being a giant downer and talking/joking about stalking. seriously.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 29 July 2005 13:45 (twenty years ago)

Hell-bent for leather

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Friday, 29 July 2005 13:45 (twenty years ago)

Amanda, don't worry!! I was joking around, too!

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 29 July 2005 13:46 (twenty years ago)

I was just confused if you were insinuating that lichter was going on a date with someone she had met via Missed Connections, or whether she was my Missed Connection girl who was stalking me via ILX.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 29 July 2005 13:47 (twenty years ago)

The only part of the dream I had last night that I remember was that my mother had eight turtles. They lived in dirt, like plants, four to a pot. It was like their legs were buried and just their shells and their necks and heads stuck up out of the dirt. I watered them regularly.

They kept biting at my shirt when I walked by and finally, four of the turtles pulled themselves out of their dirt and started walking on their hind legs into the kitchen where my mother was making dinner. She said, "Oh, you have to feed them, too, not just water them. They eat lettuce."

The end.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Friday, 29 July 2005 13:47 (twenty years ago)

So yesterday I did more envelope-stuffing. I printed up 800 two-page letters, and my boss decided that for each letter she would put a personal message on the first page and sign the second page, which is totally insane but it's her perogative so whatever. She started signing them and I assembled about 200 or so letters as she finished them, and she took the rest of them home to sign today. Then I get an email this morning, saying there's a mistake on the second page, and that I'm going to reprint all 800 second pages (this time with her signature dropped in by the computer, I guess she's wising up), disassemble the 200 letters I stuffed yesterday and replace the second page with the new mistake-free second page. Yay!

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 29 July 2005 13:49 (twenty years ago)

xpost - it was the latter, which would have been crafty AND creepy. oh christ. ok. well, anyway, stalking ain't funny. i feel better.

that's a great dream jenny. i had a dream about giant shrimps who lived under my dad's porch. they made me one of them.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 29 July 2005 13:50 (twenty years ago)

Were they blue turtles? Because I've heard of such dreams...

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Friday, 29 July 2005 13:51 (twenty years ago)

I had a dream that Mandee started this really long and detailed thread about how she lived in a church and was in a band and how she wanted to convert the church into a recording space for her band, and it had all these technical details about equipment and mic placement and stuff.

I also had a scary dream where Sarah disappeared.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 29 July 2005 13:51 (twenty years ago)

I've been having anxiety dreams about my cat. She has replaced tornadoes as my default "My life is a frightening mess" dream. She's sick, or hurt, or she jumps off of a balcony or something and I'm like, "NOOOOOOOOOO!"

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Friday, 29 July 2005 13:53 (twenty years ago)

No, I did not dream of Sting's solo work, thank god.

n/a that envelope stuffing scenario is a HORROR. It makes my former admin temp parts hurt. I shudder with empathy for you.

Do you ever want to grab your boss by her lapels and shake her and scream "DO YOU REALIZE THAT I'M ACTUALLY VERY SMART AND YOU ARE WASTING MY TIME AND YOURS HAVING ME STUFF FUCKING ENVELOPES YOU NINNY????" in her face? Because I kind of felt like that all the time.

xpost: Jeff has two dreams that signal great anxiety. One is tornados. The other is about the cats escaping the house.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Friday, 29 July 2005 13:56 (twenty years ago)

I saw tortoises fucking at the zoo the other day. The male was surprisingly vocal. And I'm still not sure how they work out that whole shell issue.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 29 July 2005 13:57 (twenty years ago)

i love your dream, jenny.

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 29 July 2005 14:01 (twenty years ago)

also: i wish i were as wise of an interpreter as you are!

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 29 July 2005 14:01 (twenty years ago)

Jordan, you should have posted pictures!

Land Ho (dymaxia), Friday, 29 July 2005 14:02 (twenty years ago)

What is it about tornadoes and cats? Jeff and I have a little too much in common.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Friday, 29 July 2005 14:04 (twenty years ago)

Maddie took pictures! I haven't seen them yet. If they came out, I will post them.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 29 July 2005 14:04 (twenty years ago)

Do you ever want to grab your boss by her lapels and shake her and scream "DO YOU REALIZE THAT I'M ACTUALLY VERY SMART AND YOU ARE WASTING MY TIME AND YOURS HAVING ME STUFF FUCKING ENVELOPES YOU NINNY????" in her face? Because I kind of felt like that all the time.

Oh god yes. I just think about the thousands and thousands of dollars my parents paid so that I could go to college so I could get a job STUFFING FUCKING ENVELOPES. Seriously, a college degree was a requirement for this job.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 29 July 2005 14:10 (twenty years ago)

Kelsey: Full disclosure, I used to work at a psychic hotline (as a customer service manager, not a psychic, although I did take tarot reading classes while I worked there) that was just crawling with dream interpreters and I went through a weird dream phase of having vampire dreams about twice a week for a month. The psychics were all very concerned and did a lot of dream interpretation about it (I was also in a similar phase of transition and upheaval in my life). I also used to work with a really neat lady at my last soul-sucking office admin job (see shaking and yelling comment above) who was a "life coach" and liked to interpret dreams. So I learned a lot from all of those experiences and that's why I knew what I did about your Dracula dream.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Friday, 29 July 2005 14:14 (twenty years ago)

xpost It was a requirement for the job at cars.com, too. I lied about it. If I don't get the job, I won't waste a minute wondering why. They loved me. They really want to hire me. The feedback I got was "Kate and Melissa think you hung the moon." If I don't get it it'll be because I lied about finishing college, and that will be that. No point in tears.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Friday, 29 July 2005 14:16 (twenty years ago)

Now it turns out that the mistake is on the first page, the page she is personalizing, which is actually a good thing because it means I just have to reprint them all today and then they'll sit on her desk until Monday. Yeah.

I am ready for the fucking weekend.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 29 July 2005 14:18 (twenty years ago)

kelsey are you coming to jody's going-away party tonight? Are you ready for the mellow Fake Fictions experience?

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 29 July 2005 14:19 (twenty years ago)

n/a don't despair. Just keep reminding yourself that this is not the last job you will ever have. As a matter of fact, soon that job will be nothing but a funny story about your work history that you can tell at parties, or the "worst job ever" blurb that the music press will use to caption a picture of the Fake Fictions.

Also, talk long bathroom breaks. I used to play games on my PDA in the bathroom for fifteen minute stretches.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Friday, 29 July 2005 14:20 (twenty years ago)

do you ever feel like you just want someone else's life experiences? jenny: i kinda wish i'd worked at a psychic hotline! i guess it's never too late . . .
was it all fraud? or were some people genuinely talented? what was it like? did you have to dispute charges from people saying that they didn't actually talk to a psychic for three hours?

nick: yes and YES!

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 29 July 2005 14:20 (twenty years ago)

i used to draw these angry cartoons about how much i hated my job and i found one of them the other day. i drew myself as a cash register with a human head that was shouting at people. it wasn't funny at all, really. it was pathetic and weird. i tucked it back where i found it and vowed to keep trying for teaching jobs.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 29 July 2005 14:26 (twenty years ago)

ps - jenny - i want to hear more about the psychic hotline too.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 29 July 2005 14:41 (twenty years ago)

where's john this morning? he made a copy of the feist cd for me & i love it!

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 29 July 2005 14:47 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I'm pretty damn happy with it, too.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Friday, 29 July 2005 14:52 (twenty years ago)

i just bumped the missed connections thread b/c i posted an AWESOME one.

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 29 July 2005 14:55 (twenty years ago)

Today is the last day of my first 6 months here. Have I mentioned that? Everyone here tells me they got their first review/raise after 6 months. One woman didn't have hers until after her first year, but then the boss made her raise retroactive back to her 6 month mark. SHOW ME THE MONEY!

Now, I'm paper shredding.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 29 July 2005 14:58 (twenty years ago)

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Friday, 29 July 2005 14:59 (twenty years ago)

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 29 July 2005 14:59 (twenty years ago)

yay! top o' the mornin' to ya!

love the feist! just like you thought . . .

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 29 July 2005 15:01 (twenty years ago)

This morning, while walking down Jackson, I saw a middle-aged blonde female traffic cop looking miserably at a wadded-up tissue in her hand. The fact that she was such a stock character -- I mean, I could visualize the cold-relief commercial instantly -- made me seriously laugh out loud.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 29 July 2005 15:02 (twenty years ago)

I'm glad you like it, Kelsey. Do you have a favorite song? I guess I didn't give you the tracklisting...

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 29 July 2005 15:02 (twenty years ago)

can i bring anyone anything from the twin cities?

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 29 July 2005 15:02 (twenty years ago)

I tried unsuccessfully to convince Sarah that the next FF release should be called "AW NUTS!"

jaymc did you listen to the krazy mix cd I gave you at Squeezed? If anyone else wants a copy of my krazy mix cd (called "INNARDS") let me know.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 29 July 2005 15:03 (twenty years ago)

The first three songs on my mix are "24 Hours to Tulsa" by Gene Pitney, "Clara" by Caetano Veloso, and "I Am a Cracked Machine" by Brainiac. KRAZY!

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 29 July 2005 15:04 (twenty years ago)

i love how excited you were/are about that mix!!!

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 29 July 2005 15:05 (twenty years ago)

john: haven't listened to the album enough yet, but mushaboom has real potential to be put on repeat.

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 29 July 2005 15:06 (twenty years ago)

Nick, I've listened to it a couple of times. I tried making a list of who I thought each song was by, but I only got as far as Gene Pitney, Caetano Veloso, and Brainiac before giving up. I totally should've brought it on my road trip to Milwaukee tonight. I am disappointed that Mannie Fresh doesn't play in my car's CD player. :(

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 29 July 2005 15:06 (twenty years ago)

"Clara" by Caetano Veloso
i listened to this song yesterday! nothing calms like caetano. his name sounds like an herbal tea or fancy liqueur.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 29 July 2005 15:06 (twenty years ago)

"Mushaboom" is the single, I believe.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 29 July 2005 15:06 (twenty years ago)

The one that first grabbed my attention was "One Evening" (which I e-mailed to Kenan the other day, and which I think sounds like Sade) and then the one I've been playing over and over again is "Lonely Lonely," where the guitar picks up at the very end, and you want it to keep going forever.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 29 July 2005 15:07 (twenty years ago)

just clicked on "one evening" . . . it sounds totally like something you'd like!! i like 'gatekeeper' too! not just the hot singles!

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 29 July 2005 15:11 (twenty years ago)

i hate that "music kelsey likes" is so predictable sometimes. other times, i'm okay with it.

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 29 July 2005 15:11 (twenty years ago)

The bonus track at the end ("Amourissima") sounds like it should be in The Umbrellas of Cherbourg!

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 29 July 2005 15:14 (twenty years ago)

how's the new sufjan stevens, by the way?

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 29 July 2005 15:16 (twenty years ago)

chicago ilxors

what do you think about big summer dance party in which we invite the internet, friends and fam? I bet we could make it happen. An end-of-summer thing. This is in the brainstorming stages, and by that i mean i was at work and thinking about how i want to dance and play some hot music and have a good time and that we could totally manufacture a party quickfast because of the extended music friend networking of the INTERNET. Let me know whats good.

ps: I liked "Mushaboom" pretty good! I think it made my 'singles of 2004' list!

deej.., Friday, 29 July 2005 15:17 (twenty years ago)

deej. YES.

I heard the new sufjan stevens at a store, I thought it was annoying but I'm not predisposed to that kind of thing.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 29 July 2005 15:18 (twenty years ago)

"secret heart" has this one little strand of music & maybe chorus that sounds so much like this elton john song (can't remember the name, but i'd guess it's on the album "the one").

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 29 July 2005 15:18 (twenty years ago)

Deej, I love the idea!! Let's invite THE INTERNET.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 29 July 2005 15:18 (twenty years ago)

I like the Sufjan Stevens, too. I need to get an actual copy of it, though. I've only heard it when it was streaming on Luisterpaal, and it's no longer streaming there.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 29 July 2005 15:19 (twenty years ago)

The John Wayne Gacy song is CHILLING.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 29 July 2005 15:20 (twenty years ago)

Re summer party: where would this be held? Someone's apartment/house, or are you thinking bigger?

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 29 July 2005 15:20 (twenty years ago)

I say we find a park and bring a barbecue pit.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Friday, 29 July 2005 15:22 (twenty years ago)

rent a bar?

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 29 July 2005 15:23 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, that's what I wanna know! I want to have a birthday party at my apartment sometime. You'd all be invited. But when we walk the floors squeak. I wonder if that's why the downstairs neighbor is moving out. She once came up and asked if we could walk lighter because we broke some of her wine glasses.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 29 July 2005 15:24 (twenty years ago)

walk "lighter"??? does she have her wine glasses taped to the ceiling?

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 29 July 2005 15:25 (twenty years ago)

That's when we had to stop having Riverdance practice at our place.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 29 July 2005 15:25 (twenty years ago)

Aye. T'was a sad day.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Friday, 29 July 2005 15:27 (twenty years ago)

i'm supposedly having a joint b-day party on aug. 14 (location TBD) that will involve (1) grilling various foods and (2) kickball. i don't anticipate it will be hott. funn maybe.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 29 July 2005 15:28 (twenty years ago)

y'all are invited, if you're free.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 29 July 2005 15:29 (twenty years ago)

I will say more about the psychic hotline, because I like to talk about it, but right now I'm drowning in a sea of undispensed worker justice and don't have time to write about it. I also have a poem I wrote about being a sewing maching operator in a neck tie factory that I could submit to the ILX Chicago collection of terrible work inspired art.

I would like a copy of your KRAZY mix, nick. I have enjoyed every mix that has come from n/a and/or Sarah.

I like parties. Let's have more parties. Sarah when is your birthday?

The new Sufjan Stevens is lovely lovely lovely and I love it.

Kelsey! I will miss you on Saturday. Have a good weekend, though!

Okay, I think I've covered everything. Goodbye forever.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Friday, 29 July 2005 15:33 (twenty years ago)

Art inspired by terrible work, I mean. Not terrible art inspired by work. But possibly terrible art inspired by terrible work. I'm not saying the poem is all that great, you know?

Okay goodbye forever for real.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Friday, 29 July 2005 15:34 (twenty years ago)

No! Don't do it Jenny! You're young! You have your whole life ahead of you!

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Friday, 29 July 2005 15:42 (twenty years ago)

My birthday is September 6th, thanks for askin'! I will be 28!

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 29 July 2005 15:58 (twenty years ago)

i don't mean that, really. i'm not concerned about being 30.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 29 July 2005 15:59 (twenty years ago)

Did you draw that yourself?

I feel like my 20s are lasting forever, so the next two years will probably stretch out too.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 29 July 2005 16:16 (twenty years ago)

I like BBQs, I like funn! I won't be 30 until forever from now!

giboyeux (skowly), Friday, 29 July 2005 16:19 (twenty years ago)

Whenever I get bored of putting these old checks in the shredder, which is very often, I play with them. I have made snowflakes, paper dolls, paper airplanes, and some fake origami.

What would you like me to make next?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 29 July 2005 16:19 (twenty years ago)

MAKE ME LUNCH

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 29 July 2005 16:20 (twenty years ago)

i didn't, because if i had drawn it myself it would have had accurate hair placement and would not be neon green. like this:
http://tinypic.com/9ksfgn.jpg

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 29 July 2005 16:21 (twenty years ago)

What would you like, jaymc?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 29 July 2005 16:21 (twenty years ago)

Order or step aside, please, SIR!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 29 July 2005 16:21 (twenty years ago)

Maybe I should try doing some performance art using these checks. I could pretend they are love letters. Or bills. I'm CRAZY WITH STARVATION!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 29 July 2005 16:23 (twenty years ago)

Sorry, Sarah, I'm gonna go to Cosi instead. I used to go to the one on Wabash and Jackson and would always complain about how salty their bread was, but then someone told me to try the one at Michigan and Monroe (?), and they were right: not salty at all! Amazing.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 29 July 2005 16:26 (twenty years ago)

Have I told you that story before? Why do I keep feeling like I'm repeating myself?

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 29 July 2005 16:28 (twenty years ago)

I haven't heard it before! I want some bread!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 29 July 2005 16:29 (twenty years ago)

I want some real artisan bread from a small bakery. A fresh baguette with no preservatives. A sourdough boule so fresh and so warm that you can't resist just tearing chunks out of it.

BREAD.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Friday, 29 July 2005 16:32 (twenty years ago)

Mmmmm....

So, whenever people order food for lunch, I'm the one in charge of calling it in and collecting money, right? I mean, I'm the receptionist. It makes sense. But this one lady's salad was $7.95 and she just handed me $8. 5 cents to cover tax and the delivery charge and the tip?! Why I OUGHTA!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 29 July 2005 16:38 (twenty years ago)

I was thinking bigger than an apt. party I think, but maybe not! I'm not sure how big apartments are these days. I went to a party in logan sq. that was in an apt. but managed to be pretty big. I'm just thinking that a lot of people + beer + music + dancing = fun. Logistics we would have to work out. (Usually I find the hardest part of the whole thing is usually SOUND SYSTEM issues. Boom boxes are for suckers). Is there a small-ish club that can be rented out for a night? Or would a large apt. be a better move? Who doesn't mind a bunch of people they dont know showing up at their apt? I can imagine people being very wary of that sort of thing.

This is brainstorming time!

deej.., Friday, 29 July 2005 16:45 (twenty years ago)

Damn it, jaymc! This whole trashcan full of spaghetti is going to waste because of you!

I just cut out the letters for FRIDAY. I wonder if I need to shred the letters.

"Sarah, we just lost millions! Someone used some of our old checks at the bank. Apparently, they spelled out FRIDAY. Do you know anything about this??"

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 29 July 2005 16:46 (twenty years ago)

I mean, I'm the receptionist. It makes sense.

Not really. Why can't people order their own lunch?

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 29 July 2005 16:54 (twenty years ago)

the upstairs of delilah's is free if you get 50 people to come, and you get to use their stereo and play whatever you want. the only caveat is that at midnight anyone can come up there, but usually people see that it's crowded and don't bother. they provide the bartender too.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 29 July 2005 17:02 (twenty years ago)

Drinking water out of your coffee cup is kinda gross.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 29 July 2005 17:24 (twenty years ago)

VERY INTERESTING.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 29 July 2005 17:28 (twenty years ago)

We can totally get 50 people to come, I bet.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 29 July 2005 17:28 (twenty years ago)

Deej will bring like half of that himself.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 29 July 2005 17:29 (twenty years ago)

just call them and tell them that you want to book a party. i've done it twice and it was great both times. free pool too. the first time there was a small issue with burned CDs in their stereo, but the second time (for my wedding pre-party-party) there was no problem at all. recommended!

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 29 July 2005 17:35 (twenty years ago)

My water cup is actually a coffee cup, but since I don't drink coffee it's a water cup now.

dan m (OutDatWay), Friday, 29 July 2005 17:36 (twenty years ago)

dan m (OutDatWay), Friday, 29 July 2005 17:38 (twenty years ago)

I was kidding, John. It's just one of those unspoken job duties I have, like loading up the dishwasher. But I only usually do the ordering if I'm getting lunch too and everyone wants something from the same place.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 29 July 2005 17:46 (twenty years ago)

What kind of sound syst is it? I have turntab's if we want to make it a BIG DEAL and if its easy to hook up or whatever. I'm not an expert by any means at the DJing thang but i bet we could cobble something together. Hooking an ipod up to a mixer is no prob and makes it easy to play LOTS of stuff. Where is delilahs? I should investigate.

deej.., Friday, 29 July 2005 18:23 (twenty years ago)

Delilahs = on Lincoln, just south of Diversey.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 29 July 2005 18:27 (twenty years ago)

Although this doesn't say anything about free use of the upstairs and in fact seems to indicate that it's $50/hr. Amanda, can you advise?

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 29 July 2005 18:28 (twenty years ago)

Yeah -- I just saw that too. I don't remember hearing squat about the drink packages, but the deal in June 2004 (last time we did this) was that they were counting people at the door. 50+ people drinking for at least four hours straight provides more than enough money for them and they were accomodating.

They were very professional when I booked the party and I didn't have to sign anything or pay anything upfront, or ever, really.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 29 July 2005 18:37 (twenty years ago)

I mean, we all had to pay for our own drinks, but that was it. I think they advertise those packages because they want people to purchase them. It seems like the secret deal is: you bring in the people who will drink our booze for 4 hours, we'll give you a roof, a stereo and a bartender. and a pool table. and some porn.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 29 July 2005 18:39 (twenty years ago)

Oh! They told me that if there were NOT 50 people there, that's when they would charge me the $50/hr. Sorry I forgot to mention that before.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 29 July 2005 18:40 (twenty years ago)

Gotcha.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 29 July 2005 18:41 (twenty years ago)

I'm investigating delilah's. If anyone has any other suggestions feel free to throw them out there.

deej.., Friday, 29 July 2005 18:50 (twenty years ago)

That Delilah's deal sounds awesome! ...could you bring a band, ya think?

giboyeux (skowly), Friday, 29 July 2005 18:53 (twenty years ago)

Sounds like this planning could get out of hand. I recommend keeping it simple. Burn some cds, invite everyone, party. Simple easy fun.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Friday, 29 July 2005 18:57 (twenty years ago)

http://www.delilahschicago.com/gallery/upstairs.jpg

It looks a bit more bar-ish than I was envisioning. But it could work. I'd prob. have to see it up close.

deej.., Friday, 29 July 2005 18:58 (twenty years ago)

Wooohooo payaday! That magical day that comes but once a month when a nice woman from HR comes and gives me a check, and I marvel at how large it is. That is, until I look at the amount of money witheld, and realize how much I have to pay for rent and bills. Suddenly, the check seems much, much smaller, and I long for the next payday to come.

dan m (OutDatWay), Friday, 29 July 2005 18:59 (twenty years ago)

Well, it's definitely a bar. In fact, there's an actual bar counter to the right of the frame.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 29 July 2005 18:59 (twenty years ago)

Oh yeah of course, i want it to have a bar! I think it should have a dance club atmosphere tho too.

deej.., Friday, 29 July 2005 19:07 (twenty years ago)

i see...delilah's is probably not your place then, i fear. no dance club atmo there.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 29 July 2005 19:09 (twenty years ago)

what about liar's club?

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 29 July 2005 19:14 (twenty years ago)

Liar's Club anyone?

xpost: kelsey, we think alike...

dan m (OutDatWay), Friday, 29 July 2005 19:14 (twenty years ago)

and idea for music, that would be simple would be to have everyone burn 30 min mix cds. As many as you like, but one that you really want to play. Everyone gets to play their one, and then the rest are put on.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Friday, 29 July 2005 19:20 (twenty years ago)

jeff, i don't know that you want to allow me to do that...

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 29 July 2005 19:21 (twenty years ago)

sure! that is what would make it fun. and 30 minutes is a great amount. Just enough where you can make your songs known but not wear out your welcome.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Friday, 29 July 2005 19:22 (twenty years ago)

of course, mine is just going to be one track off Sheer Hellish Miasma

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Friday, 29 July 2005 19:22 (twenty years ago)

You could make enough copies of your mix to go around, then everyone could leave with a bunch of cds as party favors!

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 29 July 2005 19:28 (twenty years ago)

Hm, I'm pretty sure Gravitar has a 20 min+ song or two...

dan m (OutDatWay), Friday, 29 July 2005 19:29 (twenty years ago)

The prob. with that jeff is its a good idea but what ends up happening is there's totally no flow to the music and its all very stop start. Its better usually to have people submit stuff ahead of time and have one person put it all together (in my experience). Or to just get a DJ. Or to take turns DJing. I donno theres tons of stuff we could do! But if its like randomly Master P (my CD) and then randomly Outhud it doesnt (neccessarily) work well.

deej.., Friday, 29 July 2005 19:31 (twenty years ago)

Iguess we just have different vibes in mind, depends on what the vibe of the crowd is really.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Friday, 29 July 2005 19:34 (twenty years ago)

sparetimechicago.com is a restaurant group and they will rent out their facilities for parties. I only know this from seeing a flier in the bathroom at one of their locations and then looking on line back when we were entertaining places other than the Hop Leaf to have our wedding reception. Maybe something there is more of a dance club kind of place.

If you're hoping for more dancing than standing around and talking then I think the DJ/continuity idea is good.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Friday, 29 July 2005 19:37 (twenty years ago)

I know what you mean jeff! I don't dislike the democratic ideal of the everyone-is-a-dj thing at all, but it needs to be tied together at some point or its just a check-out-this-cool-song party instead of an i'm-having-so-much-fun-dancing party.

deej.., Friday, 29 July 2005 19:43 (twenty years ago)

I do like check-out-this-cool-song parties too though! We should do both at some pt.

deej.., Friday, 29 July 2005 19:53 (twenty years ago)

drake, you fascist.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 29 July 2005 19:55 (twenty years ago)

See you tomorrow, Chicago!!

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 29 July 2005 20:05 (twenty years ago)

Loop lunch FAP: I'm in the loop for two morning meetings on Monday. If anyone wants to get together for a bite of lunch, let me know. Preferably before Monday since I won't get a chance to be on line after people get to work. Or call me on my cellular telephone. Or tell me on Saturday night. Or all three.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Friday, 29 July 2005 20:07 (twenty years ago)

Heil DJs!

deej.., Friday, 29 July 2005 20:09 (twenty years ago)

count me in for lunch, yenny!

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 29 July 2005 20:10 (twenty years ago)

WHOOP! What time and where?

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Friday, 29 July 2005 20:18 (twenty years ago)

Are we seeing anyone else tonight except kelsey?

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 29 July 2005 20:20 (twenty years ago)

jenny - how about we meet on the (de paul) corner of state and jackson at 12:16? we can debate about the exact time tomorrow night, between sets. you've got my numba.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 29 July 2005 20:26 (twenty years ago)

Word booty.

I believe we're going to stay in and watch movies and eat ice cream tonight. Or at least, I will be eating ice cream.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Friday, 29 July 2005 20:58 (twenty years ago)

I'm going to a friend's gallery opening at some place on Lake St.

dan m (OutDatWay), Friday, 29 July 2005 21:23 (twenty years ago)

Is it already time for a new thread? I know it feels like it's only been a week, but I don't like to let these things run much over 1000 posts. Maybe Monday morning.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Friday, 29 July 2005 22:09 (twenty years ago)

hump

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Saturday, 30 July 2005 16:22 (twenty years ago)

hey y'all. i leave on wednesday, so if anyone can think of an evening in-between to get drinks and say goodbye (maybe in andersonville?) let me know.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Saturday, 30 July 2005 19:09 (twenty years ago)

We'd be down, but it has to be after 9, cause Jenny works till then. She will coordinate.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Saturday, 30 July 2005 19:20 (twenty years ago)

I will? Any night you want, Ammmmmmmmmmmmmmma.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Saturday, 30 July 2005 20:19 (twenty years ago)

where you goin? what's this about leavin? i haven't even met you yet.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Saturday, 30 July 2005 20:36 (twenty years ago)

Jesus H. Christ.

As much as I share the noize dude enemy list with Orbit, I now completely understand everyone's frustration with her. I just spent an hour on the phone with her, during which I did my bit of whining, as I do. And then she did her bit of whining, during which she attacked a fair number of people that I like, and made insanely irrational arguments against them, and when I argued in their favor, refused to budge on any point. It's like she's some kinda ass-stupid superhero, totally impervious to the intelligence of others. It was like nothing else I've ever argued against.

"But you have to understand, these people don't know you. You can't let it get to you like this."

"Yes I can."

"But they're not your friends. Why do you care so much?"

"Because they lie about me."

"I don't quite believe that, but let's assume that they do. Who cares if they lie about you?! They don't even know you!"

"You don't understand. They lie."

"But they're not even real people, Orbit. They're on the internet. At least half of the reason they pick on you is because you let them get to you so badly."

"But they lie."

"You're not listening. That's not the point."

"But they lie."

"I don't care if they do. No one does. Your dignity is more important here. You have to to let this go."

"They lie."

"But we're past that. Or I thought we were. Look, stop acting like a freak, and they'll stop being assholes to you."

"But why do they hate me?"

"They don't even know you. These are a bunch of incorrigible nerds we're talking about. They pick on anyone they sense weakness from. Stop caring so mucyh, and FOR GOD'S SAKE STOP BEING SO DEFENSIVE, and they'll leave you alone."

"But they lie."

*sigh*

I think I ended this exchange, which went on for much longer than this, by saying, "You have succeeded in exasperating me as much as you have everyone else on the board." This was the truth. She hung up on me. Good riddance. She's a nut.

So that's what I did tonight. I learned to dislike someone. I'm not sure this means progress for me as a person.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Sunday, 31 July 2005 03:34 (twenty years ago)

why do you talk on the phone with people you haven't met in person? especially someone like that? weird

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Sunday, 31 July 2005 03:50 (twenty years ago)

I've talked to orbit on the phone before, and found her stories interesting and her demeanor pleasant enough, which is why I defended her on other threads. She seemed rather nice. But get her talking about ILX, and it all gets very personal and painful and -- pardon my saying so -- insane.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Sunday, 31 July 2005 03:55 (twenty years ago)

you both need to chill, it's a fucking interweb message board

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Sunday, 31 July 2005 03:57 (twenty years ago)

I know. Believe me, I'm Captain Mellow compared to this girl.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Sunday, 31 July 2005 04:00 (twenty years ago)

I'm upset by this. I don't like to think people can be crazy.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Sunday, 31 July 2005 04:02 (twenty years ago)

Um... shit. I'm not one to talk, am I?

Shit.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Sunday, 31 July 2005 04:03 (twenty years ago)

New thread!

Chicago X

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Sunday, 31 July 2005 04:13 (twenty years ago)

Kenan
With friends like you, who needs enemies? Was this really called for? What was your motivation for posting this? What are you trying to accomplish? Did it ever occur to you that from my point of view YOU sound insane , too? The difference between us is that I didn't see fit to post a private phone convo to ILX. Got to hell, Kenan.
