So, like, if I were to Dare Suggest an NYC*FAP for Saturday, July 30...would anyone actually show up?

The wife and child are fleeing the nest for a week to go visit my mother-in-law, so I'll be officially left to my own devices "off my leash" on Saturday, July 30. Who is left from ILX nation in NYC? Would anyone be up for knockin' back a few while extolling the merits of long-forgotten metal bands and talkin' shit about folks who didn't bother to show up?

Lemme know.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 23 July 2005 00:26 (twenty years ago)

i'm back in town. i suggested the liz memorial fap for friday the 29th, but this is a possibility too.

bela lugosi meets a brooklyn gorilla (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 23 July 2005 00:38 (twenty years ago)

I'm here, and I would really like to be involved in any memorial FAP that might take place. Can't help on the metal front, though -- I've sworn off Mike Patton in all possible worlds/incarnations. Yes, I'm sure there is more to metal than ol' Gotterdammerung Guts, but I can't stomach it.

Laurel, Saturday, 23 July 2005 01:09 (twenty years ago)

I'm not back on the east coast until Aug 16 :-(

lyra (lyra), Saturday, 23 July 2005 01:32 (twenty years ago)

i'm mostly a lurker, but i'd love to come. been exiled in dc for a year and i'm finally back in nyc where i belong, and drinking like a fish. i will listen with wonderment to talk of forgotten metal bands, but i will likely not have much to offer on that front.

carly (carly), Saturday, 23 July 2005 02:12 (twenty years ago)

I should point out that the proposed discussion of metal bands was only a solitary suggestion and not a carved-in-stone dictum. All topics would be welcomed.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 23 July 2005 02:15 (twenty years ago)

i'm there. beer label cover connections?

carly (carly), Saturday, 23 July 2005 02:21 (twenty years ago)

Amazing Randy's Gran?

Truckdrivin' Buddha (Rock Hardy), Saturday, 23 July 2005 02:22 (twenty years ago)

I'm only getting back to town the next morning, I think. If you all are still drinking at 10 am Sunday I'll stop by.

Paul Eater (eater), Saturday, 23 July 2005 02:28 (twenty years ago)

That is a very irresponsible challenge,

Paul. I will come to this if I don't have to work, guaranteed, PUT IT ON THE BOARD. HE GONE.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 23 July 2005 07:31 (twenty years ago)

Hmmmm.....this needs to be kicked into gear somehow.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 23 July 2005 21:24 (twenty years ago)

hmmm.

cutty (mcutt), Saturday, 23 July 2005 21:30 (twenty years ago)

I'm suggesting MANHATTAN as a meeting place. Can we carve it down from there?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Saturday, 23 July 2005 21:34 (twenty years ago)

downtown, preferably near the R train.

juicy juice is 100 percent juice (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 23 July 2005 22:38 (twenty years ago)

I'll see your downtown and raise you the East Village, as I'll likely be working that night anyway.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Saturday, 23 July 2005 22:46 (twenty years ago)

I'll see your East Village and throw in one Stomp. Or no, wait, the ATM right next to Stomp.

Stevie Ray Vai, Saturday, 23 July 2005 23:21 (twenty years ago)

If you're serious, that sounds great to me. Anybody know a good bar in the area?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Saturday, 23 July 2005 23:33 (twenty years ago)

I was thinking we'd just hang at the ATM. But, you've taken it to a whole new level. Let's see... across the street is Telephone, Thirsty Scholar and 2 or 3 more on St. Marks. Around the corner is the Continental. To the west some is Ace. None of those places is very great. At least at the ATM we can score some spare change.

Stevie Ray, Saturday, 23 July 2005 23:48 (twenty years ago)

i still don't know what FAP stands for, and i've never been to one, but now sounds like a good time to start. i'll see your east village and raise you the backyard of d.b.a. (though i confess i have no idea how crowded it gets on weekends.)

very bad service
Posted by jmarmor on 03/25/2005

"I agree with many of the people who have written in to say that this bar has turned awful. I used to come here regularly, and liked it. Recently, however, I had a really bad experience. The staff was not only inattentive but just plain rude - the bouncer at the door especially so - shining his flashlight in faces and being, well, just plain rude. No need to go here - there's about a million other great divey beer bars in the east village and this one is not only nothing special, but likely to leave you feeling like you've paid money for rude service and mediocre atmosphere.

likely to leave you feeling like you've paid money for rude service and mediocre atmosphere

sounds just like ILX! what more could we ask for? :)

fact checking cuz (fcc), Sunday, 24 July 2005 00:07 (twenty years ago)

hahaha

one of these days i'd love to make it out to a FAP

joseph (joseph), Sunday, 24 July 2005 00:12 (twenty years ago)

Hm. I'd go to dba but the back yard is kind of fancy pants, isn't it (ie cafe tables and gravel walkways, hard to seat a lot of people)? What about Sweet & Vicious -- they also have a back yard but it's picnic-tables casual (at least last time I wuz there). Within walking distance of the N at Prince St.

http://newyork.citysearch.com/profile/7109323/new_york_ny/sweet_vicious.html

Laurel, Sunday, 24 July 2005 00:12 (twenty years ago)

FAP= "Fancy a pint?"
Those UKers started this steez, we's just on board for the ride.
I'd definitely like to meet up with that fact-checker, so yeah somebody nail this mother down and let's nail that sucker up.
Sweet and Vicious sounds okay to me.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Sunday, 24 July 2005 01:25 (twenty years ago)

i'm not gonna be around for this! bah! have a good time though!

geeta (geeta), Sunday, 24 July 2005 01:29 (twenty years ago)

Dude, is Ally not in NYC any more? That would explain why I'm getting away with setting the FAP below 65th St. Rawk.

Laurel, Sunday, 24 July 2005 02:16 (twenty years ago)

i'm so down for the atm outside of stomp!!

juicy juice is 100 percent juice (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 24 July 2005 02:42 (twenty years ago)

I want to meet Alex and not be horribly hungover for a change. I can remember to ask too, why you keep introducing yourself to someone you once said you wanted to set on fire.

Mendoza Lineman (Carey), Sunday, 24 July 2005 03:44 (twenty years ago)

also URGENT: Alex, please update us with what shirt you will be wearing.

Mendoza Lineman (Carey), Sunday, 24 July 2005 03:45 (twenty years ago)

If someone is going to pick a place based on outdoor seating in Manhattan, make sure they don't close it at 10-11pm. dba has limited seating inside once the outside is closed. I think I may have a drunk crush on one of the doormen at Scratcher so I am leaning towards there.

Mendoza Lineman (Carey), Sunday, 24 July 2005 03:57 (twenty years ago)

I like the Scratcher but please have pity on the smokers in these troubled times. And wherever we go, it'll have to be on the early side to get Friday night seating for however many.

Laurel, Sunday, 24 July 2005 08:03 (twenty years ago)

Not the Telephone bar, and not the Thirsty Scholar....those places suck from a giant cock-shaped pitcher of lameness.

I'm all for the East Village or Lower East Side.

I'll be wearing either a KJ shirt or a Venom shirt if this proposed meet-up occurs. I do like the Scratcher, but it's a bit stuck in the 90's for my taste.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 24 July 2005 17:05 (twenty years ago)

So I'm asking again, is there anything wrong with Sweet and Vicious?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Sunday, 24 July 2005 20:51 (twenty years ago)

Is there anything wrong with it? Hmmmm.....no, not especially. I think the question you should really be asking, though, is: are there enough things right with it, and I think the answer is a resounding no.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 24 July 2005 20:57 (twenty years ago)

okay, smart guy, whattaYOUgot?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Sunday, 24 July 2005 20:58 (twenty years ago)

Fair enough....

Places I'd suggest:
- Siberia (for the nostalgia factor, the space and the hStencil factor)
- Manitoba's (tho' it might be a bit too small)
- Maxx Fish (tho' it too is deplorably stuck in das Nineties....but still has a reputable jukebox)
- 288 (Otherwise known as Tom & Jerry's)
- Crime Scene (not flashy, but I like its proximity to the former site of McGurk's Suicide Hall)
- Von

C'mon, peoples ....let's make this work, otherwise it's going to be me, a tallboy of Crazy Horse and a PlayStation 2.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 24 July 2005 21:23 (twenty years ago)

Siberia's okay, but I'd prefer a little further downtown. I'll acquiesce to any of the above; i'm easy like that.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Sunday, 24 July 2005 21:51 (twenty years ago)

You rock like'dat.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 24 July 2005 23:10 (twenty years ago)

We still have some time. Keep the suggestions comin'.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 24 July 2005 23:10 (twenty years ago)

how about sophie's on 5th st? or mona's on ave b and 13th?

not gettin' hassled, not gettin' hustled (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 24 July 2005 23:19 (twenty years ago)

Wasn't Sophie's where John S. Hall asked the woman if she'd ever been double-fucked by two black studs? I say you go there. There's a bar there called Manitoba's? Why didn't anyone take me there? Unless it's Handsome Dick Manitoba's in which case thanks for not taking me there.

Bryan (Bryan), Sunday, 24 July 2005 23:27 (twenty years ago)

(just taking sides with the Caribou guy)

Bryan (Bryan), Sunday, 24 July 2005 23:35 (twenty years ago)

It is Handsome Dick's place.

I wanna FAP but I can't make this one.

mcd (mcd), Sunday, 24 July 2005 23:59 (twenty years ago)

ew, manitoba's. i kind of hate that bar.

not gettin' hassled, not gettin' hustled (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 25 July 2005 00:10 (twenty years ago)

There's a bar on 11th St, I think it's called 11th Street Bar, that's usually not too crowded and they have big tables in the back.

o. nate (onate), Monday, 25 July 2005 00:27 (twenty years ago)

don't have it at siberia, because if you do i can't go. also saturday is their gay party, "cruising."

saturday during the day i think i'm having a stoop sale.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 25 July 2005 02:12 (twenty years ago)

Ha ha, why can New Yorkers never decide where to go? It's the too many options thing, innit?

Mary (Mary), Monday, 25 July 2005 02:32 (twenty years ago)

I don't mind getting cruised by lesbians.
What's on St. Marks Place? Anything decent?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 25 July 2005 03:19 (twenty years ago)

grassroots is ok.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 25 July 2005 03:20 (twenty years ago)

i don't care where this thing is but i don't really like walking to the subway from siberia late at night. i know it's safe, but... eh.

not gettin' hassled, not gettin' hustled (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 25 July 2005 03:31 (twenty years ago)

Shebeen

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 25 July 2005 03:35 (twenty years ago)

it's not particularly safe, if you're leaving early and the parole center's still open! heh. anyway, yeah, that walk, even tho a block, really sucked esp. with large billz in my wallet.

if u guys have this at siberia, i'll be really bummed (tho i am not reeally sure yet what my planz are saturday).

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 25 July 2005 03:35 (twenty years ago)

Not that it's up to me, but okay --- no Siberia.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 25 July 2005 12:35 (twenty years ago)

Its not too many options, its the lack of a steering committee to make decisions.

Just make it dba why don'tcha. Does the job nicely I think.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 25 July 2005 12:42 (twenty years ago)

Saturday during the day i think i'm seeing Oneida at East River Park, after buying old Cub scorecards from hstencil.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 25 July 2005 12:46 (twenty years ago)

Maxx Fish gets a bit too crowded on the weekends. Let's do Tom and Jerry's or Hi Fi or KGB Bar.

Mendoza Lineman (Carey), Monday, 25 July 2005 13:16 (twenty years ago)

Forgot about Hi-Fi (the site that was formerly :::sniff:::: Brownie's).

All those would be for with me.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 25 July 2005 14:43 (twenty years ago)

max fish is so gross. the lighting!

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 25 July 2005 14:53 (twenty years ago)

max fish is the like a sitcom high school hangout for the vice magazine crowd

Boring Satanic Space Jazz (sexyDancer), Monday, 25 July 2005 15:40 (twenty years ago)

also, the blue and red walls. those colors pop together. headachesville!

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 25 July 2005 15:45 (twenty years ago)

I might be in town that weekend, if someone has +2 roomage in their joint. Though couldn't stay out late on Saturday cos must depart by like noon next day. I always prefer KGB to other options.

Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Monday, 25 July 2005 15:53 (twenty years ago)

It used to be cool....back in the early 90s (y'know, when the earth was young, the seas were still hot and the skies were filled with the shrieks of descending pteradactyles).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 25 July 2005 15:54 (twenty years ago)

the lst time i was at max fish was with lauren!!!!

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 25 July 2005 16:39 (twenty years ago)

max fish is horrible! as is anywhere in the LES on a weekend night.

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 25 July 2005 16:46 (twenty years ago)

kgb is a good "date" bar but it might be too hard to secure enough of those tiny two-tops for a fap.

not gettin' hassled, not gettin' hustled (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 25 July 2005 21:23 (twenty years ago)

also, check the kgb website to see if there aren't any POETRY READINGS that night.

not gettin' hassled, not gettin' hustled (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 25 July 2005 21:26 (twenty years ago)

So, did Ace close a long time ago? That was pretty cool because it was dark, good jukebox and relatively big so it never really got packed. I haven't tried to go there in at least 7 years, so it probably doesn't exist anymore, I guess.

The man with the plan, Monday, 25 July 2005 21:34 (twenty years ago)

it was still open as of about two years ago.

not gettin' hassled, not gettin' hustled (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 25 July 2005 21:59 (twenty years ago)

haha oh god "tiny two-tops for a fap" may be the gayest most mary poppins shit ever said on this board.

not gettin' hassled, not gettin' hustled (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 25 July 2005 22:01 (twenty years ago)

Haha I guess you didn't see Tom's everyone-love-your-neighbor-hugs-kisses-society-should-know-everyone-hug-yr-subway-seat-partner-and-search-his-bag-while-ya-at-it post last week.

Anyway! We've had FAPs at KBG before but A) not very large ones B) key was to show up quite early and snag the whole back row. But yeah, it is too small :(

I am just against the Hi Fi cos it gets sooo crowded and I never get to hear my $40 worth of jukebox songs! I always forget and rip myself off on that machine.

Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Monday, 25 July 2005 22:12 (twenty years ago)

Ally, please find a way to make it to this! It's high time I met the TOMBOT!!!

Bars in my `hood suitable:

- The Cedar Tavern (perennial fave. once upon a time, my second living room)
- The Black'n'White Bar
- The Central Bar
- The Stoned Crow (ugh!)
- Johnny's Bar (great, but small)

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 25 July 2005 22:40 (twenty years ago)

KGB is totally fine for a FAP. They have the greatest doordude in the world and it only takes like 10 minutes to commandeer enough seats for at least 8 people. Although, there are a lot of people on this thread that I have no clue who they are.

Mendoza Lineman (Carey), Monday, 25 July 2005 22:46 (twenty years ago)

the cedar would be good if there aren't too many drunk annoying nyu fratty fucks there (maybe just summer school kids at this time of year).

not gettin' hassled, not gettin' hustled (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 25 July 2005 22:48 (twenty years ago)

New wrench for you monkeys: I want to smoke.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 01:21 (twenty years ago)

Tracer, the only way you're smoking is if we're outdoors and any place outdoors is not really a bar. That's NY law, not my prejudice. I daresay you may be shit outta luck on that count.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 01:25 (twenty years ago)

or if you go to the place i linked to

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 01:29 (twenty years ago)

Brooklyn outdoor patios stay open until late in the AM, but I think Alex has one of those electric collars that zaps him if he leaves the city.

Mendoza Lineman (Carey), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 01:31 (twenty years ago)

Can I suggest that since Alex started the thread, he should be responsible for picking ONE PLACE and then taking the blame for all the shit that goes wrong and taking credit for all the shit that goes right?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 01:40 (twenty years ago)

Looks like I can make this so I'm in! And my suggestion is... Why not a pub crawl?

Aaron W (Aaron W), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 02:42 (twenty years ago)

Still not decided? Whoo boy.

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 09:58 (twenty years ago)

Hmm, I thought I'd posted but nothing's showing up...to recap, then:

Trace, I've been begging for a smoking option for days but no one's listening. And Forks is wrong, there're plenty of bars with outdoor space but two have already been shot down in this thread I don't expect the other few I know of will be well received, either, since they're mostly odd ex-pat bars that may or may not be very good apart from having patios.

Pub crawl = HARRIBLE idea for a Saturday, we'd never find room to sit or even stand together at each successive venue. Perhaps Alex SHOULD just pick one? Us addicts will fend for ourselves one way or t'other.

Laurel, Tuesday, 26 July 2005 13:22 (twenty years ago)

the lst time i was at max fish was with lauren!!!!

and felicity, if i remember correctly. before 7pm most bars are tolerable (unless it's the marz in which case it's only tolerable after 2am).

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 13:43 (twenty years ago)

I won't go anywhere that has (a) an odd number of exits/entrances, (b) GURLS there, (c) an Ambient Air Quality Index below APQ standard PRsub2.25, (d) redheads employed in any capacity whatsoever, (e) a visible fleur-de-lis in main- and/or bathrooms, (f) irregular ceiling heights, including irregularities created by exposed piping or electrical, (g) a regular weekend clientele including city employees, interior designers, astronauts, or nutritionists, (h) bathrooms or stalls that lock by hook-and-loop latch or push-button doorknob lock [slide-bar latches only], (i) an aroma of cinnamon, shrimp, raw potato, jasmin, vanilla, or rain, (j) chairs whose bases elevate one to less than two and one-half feet (30 inches) above ground, (k) a seat-to-stool ratio below 3:1, (l) an air of luxury, (m) a certain insouciance, (n) darting and/or other game paths arranged in north-south orientation, (o) a tiling system that results in a prime number of independent tiles, whether visible or calculable, (p) a waitress with a pierced dimple, (q) more than two mirrors on any given wall [including bathrooms], (r) people drinking inside, (s) a bar that curves or angles across more than one-third (1/3) of its total span, (t) a tap on which more than three handles are shaped like animals, (u) a tap on which more than four handles extend more than two and one half feet (30 inches) above their pouring spots, (v) individuals employed who are in any way related to William Howard Taft and/or Sherman Hemsley and/or Tracer Hand, (w) GURLS not there, (x) an attitude, (y) an imaginary pet cat that hates Mongolians, or (z) expensive drinks.

Don't get all Jesus Christ Superstar on me, for cryin' out loud.

For lack of a better idea, I'm gonna go with 288 (otherwise known as Tom & Jerry's) on Elizabeth Street (between Bleeker & Houston)....say....at, I dunno, 8pm?

In another life, I was Simon the Zealot in a college production of JC Supahstar; imagine me with jazz hands.
So the spot is now officially Tom+Jerry's AKA 288 at 8pm NYC time, which means more like 9 before you're actually expected.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 20:55 (twenty years ago)

sorry alex, old friends will be there. depending on time, maybe i can come by for a pint first, we'll see.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 21:15 (twenty years ago)

Cool, man, I understand. See what you can do.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 21:19 (twenty years ago)

I like how tom and jerry's always smells vaguely of vomit.

Mendoza Lineman (Carey), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 22:17 (twenty years ago)

Hahahaha

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 22:31 (twenty years ago)

i might try to come to this (if i can convince my gf that meeting internet people is not completely mentalist) since we'll be in nyc. unless we also go to brokaw/loewenstein, in which case i believe i once promised to buy hstencil a beer.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 23:06 (twenty years ago)

so this is on? i'm looking forward to blowing my newly returned rent deposit on drinks.

club soda (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 28 July 2005 08:44 (twenty years ago)

I'm still planning on it.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 28 July 2005 13:02 (twenty years ago)

I'm planning to stop by.

o. nate (onate), Thursday, 28 July 2005 13:22 (twenty years ago)

Rock, Rock and thrice verily Rock.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 28 July 2005 13:27 (twenty years ago)

Our train arrives @ Penn Station around 5pm

TOMBOT, Thursday, 28 July 2005 13:43 (twenty years ago)

I will be working in the area until 7, so I can prolly grab one of the big tables when i get there. I feel like the vomit smell has something to do with their mexican coffee.

Mendoza Lineman (Carey), Thursday, 28 July 2005 13:55 (twenty years ago)

Ally and Tom, I meant to offer that you guys can stay with us. The only thing is that we do not use AC (the other night I got a bottle of vodka from the freezer, wrapped it in a t-shirt and was sleeping with it) and we do not have any plural guest accommadations yet. So one person could sleep on the pretty but stiff couch and one could crash on the floor, or whatever it is you guys do.

Mendoza Lineman (Carey), Thursday, 28 July 2005 14:01 (twenty years ago)

Thank you! I never owned an A/C in NY...I also never tried this vodka method of cool down, it is a great image in my head.

Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Thursday, 28 July 2005 14:03 (twenty years ago)

We have one sleeping bag, plenty of towels/toiletries, just bring a toothbrush.

Mendoza Lineman (Carey), Thursday, 28 July 2005 14:06 (twenty years ago)

Ben and I will be on the spot.

Ally, I never had AC before last year and I survived, but sometimes barely. Did you refrain on principle or from cheapness?

Laurel, Thursday, 28 July 2005 14:24 (twenty years ago)

I never thought it got too hot! I had an A/C in the apt on 66th St that you were at, but it didn't work right, it leaked into the apt and blew hot air so I didn't try it much, so I just got used to it after a while. Lots of wearing almost nothing around the house, icy vodka drinks, etc.

"Getting used to it" is an impossibility in DC, btw. This place is like possibly Hell.

Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Thursday, 28 July 2005 14:27 (twenty years ago)

Errr Carey I promise I will wear more than "nothing" at your house, however, A/C or not.

Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Thursday, 28 July 2005 14:29 (twenty years ago)

Maybe it's just that I'm from more Northern climes. Then again, there was one summer while I lived in Jersey City during which we had a 4-day heat wave -- didn't drop below the mid-'90s even at night. Before it was over, my doorknobs were too hot to touch bare-handed, my mattress was a heating pad, and every breath felt like it was taken in a sauna. Eurrrgh.

I believe you about DC, though. It's basically The South, right? At least by some yardsticks?

Laurel, Thursday, 28 July 2005 14:38 (twenty years ago)

Well I technically live in VIRGINIA so, I mean, it's all hillbilly country as far as I can tell...

Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Thursday, 28 July 2005 14:40 (twenty years ago)

it's not that it's the South, it's that it's a swamp.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 28 July 2005 14:48 (twenty years ago)

i will be out of town, but have fun kids!

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Thursday, 28 July 2005 14:55 (twenty years ago)

I'm extending an ally offer to a house with air conditioning even.
Just no bed. Bring a bag and you're welcome to crash out.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Thursday, 28 July 2005 19:16 (twenty years ago)

Please don't steal my computer though.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Thursday, 28 July 2005 19:17 (twenty years ago)

Forecast is saying rain, I'm sad to report.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 28 July 2005 19:46 (twenty years ago)

I'm bringing my camera, so I want people feeling extra photogenic, dammit.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 28 July 2005 23:00 (twenty years ago)

I'm very much looking forward to meeting you all...

carly (carly), Friday, 29 July 2005 13:14 (twenty years ago)

Did a bunch of new NY people just decide to come out to play once Ally moved?

Mendoza Lineman (Carey), Friday, 29 July 2005 13:23 (twenty years ago)

I think Ally and I switched places. I moved from ny to dc last year, and just got back. Keeping the ilxquilibrium?

carly (carly), Friday, 29 July 2005 13:28 (twenty years ago)

This will only be the second FAP I've ever attended. I almost made it to the NedFap last year, but fate intervened.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 29 July 2005 13:46 (twenty years ago)

i am 50/50. fate, that evil intervener, may situate may in queens for the evening. if not, i will be there with a copy of whitburn's "top pop singles" and several popoff metal guides so i can properly fact check all discussions, propositions and arguments.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Friday, 29 July 2005 14:44 (twenty years ago)

The name of my first album is going to be The Evil Intervener. And it's going to ROCK!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 29 July 2005 14:46 (twenty years ago)

This is going to be excellent.

carly (carly), Friday, 29 July 2005 15:01 (twenty years ago)

Don't forget....this is tomorrow night!!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 29 July 2005 23:47 (twenty years ago)

i may stop in for a pint -- i work tomorrow :-(

Eisbär (llamasfur), Friday, 29 July 2005 23:59 (twenty years ago)

wait, we are actually doing T&J's right? 9pmish? I'll be there, someone ring me if teh plans change.

Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Saturday, 30 July 2005 04:55 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, 288/Tom & Jerrry's.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 30 July 2005 06:15 (twenty years ago)

i'll probably be there; not sure what time though.

cost fucked madonna (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 30 July 2005 07:10 (twenty years ago)

Will Jess be there? Tom & Jerry's has an entry in Frommer's. Eisbär should be there. Will Felicity and bnw be there?

youn, Saturday, 30 July 2005 10:41 (twenty years ago)

Still on, yes?
I'm lookin' at 9 or so and I wanna see the Aristocrats after.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Saturday, 30 July 2005 22:08 (twenty years ago)

9 seems like the the hour. I might get there earlier just because....well, fuck...what else am I doing? Actually walked by earlier (visiting my friend Sean who lives down the street), and it looked nice, empty and accomodating. That was, course, two hours ago, though.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 30 July 2005 22:12 (twenty years ago)

i will be there, even though nobody will recognize me and i won't recognize anybody. i will wear a skirt and flipflops, and have blondish hair and sexy librarian glasses. and a very pink bag. maybe nitsuh can add to this description if he is online.

carly (carly), Saturday, 30 July 2005 22:42 (twenty years ago)

i'm sure that you will all be sad to find out, but i cannot come.

:-)

Eisbär (llamasfur), Saturday, 30 July 2005 22:48 (twenty years ago)

Eisbo, you sucksbo!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 30 July 2005 22:50 (twenty years ago)

blame my boss!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Saturday, 30 July 2005 23:03 (twenty years ago)

can't make it. got no sleep last night, took a long nap until just now after my stoop sale, gotta be in wburg in an hour and haven't showered. oi vey. sorry.

hstencil (hstencil), Saturday, 30 July 2005 23:04 (twenty years ago)

i'd like to make it and i'll try to, but i'm in a similar deal as hstencil: no sleep, exhausted after long hot day, and in need of some basic grooming.

cost fucked madonna (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 30 July 2005 23:07 (twenty years ago)

I'll be doing no drinking, I warn. Spent the evening out with Pappawheelie (of all people) and got good and queasy. Mostly just wanna meet and greet; if anybody wants to join me at a late-night Aristocrats I'm down.
I'm also bringing an offbeat treat that I found in the street! It's neat!

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Saturday, 30 July 2005 23:12 (twenty years ago)

JBR that sounds suspiciously like "I have to do my hair."

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 30 July 2005 23:24 (twenty years ago)

fuck it, i will show up -- but just for 1 pint. then i gotsta split post-haste.

i'm a short dude, wearing a green & white plaid shirt today. just so you crazies know.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Saturday, 30 July 2005 23:24 (twenty years ago)

I think I will make this and get royally drunk off my ass.

heh.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 31 July 2005 13:27 (twenty years ago)

If by "wild" you mean fun and pleasantly well attended, yes. No one dropped their pants or lit their hair on fire or dropped acid or displayed their rodeo skill or nothing though. Well, they might've after I left, actually.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 31 July 2005 13:28 (twenty years ago)

Ally, Tombot and Eisbär, who was there for, like, twenty minutes before I figured out who he was. I was under the impression that his name was pronounced "Eyes Bar", not "Ice Bear" (which sounded somewhat Tolkienesque to me). Ally and Carly in the second pic = SEPARATED AT BIRTH?

But I think Mookie and Alex as The Radio Morning Dudes From Hell is the winner.

(Am I wrong for thinking that the first photo of Mike D. makes him look more like Mike L. as in Love?)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 31 July 2005 14:00 (twenty years ago)

Tombot looks like he's trying to suck an olive through his straw in the 2nd one.

I swear I will make it to a FAP this year. They look like fun, plus the women are hott.

I had a nice time, even if my general social retardation and hungover teetotalling made me tremendously self-conscious. I'm working on these issues with my psychic. I mean, therapist.
On the other hand, the seeming turbo-douchery of handing out business cards was entirely sincere: I'd like all ya'll folks to come out to the club. We need fresh blood.
Also I got one of the nicer compliments this year from Mookie with -
"On the train ride home, I'll be thinkin': "That Tofu guy... he's okay."

Y'all seem okay too. Pleasure meetin' ya!

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Sunday, 31 July 2005 17:57 (twenty years ago)

nabiscothingy, Sunday, 31 July 2005 21:34 (twenty years ago)

Forks (the multi-pronged dining implements) clove (past tense of 'cleave', i.e. to separate into separate parts) tofu (solidified bean curd).
It's stupid but it's all i have. Very very uncomfortable introducing myself with that goddamn name. From now on, please refer to me in person as "Golden Boy".

this was nice. i was sorry to see people exiting just as we were all getting drunk enough. i feel like i accomplished something, if nothing else, drinking til after the sun came up, passing out, awaking 2.5 hours later, and going to the beach, where I became sun kissed and happy, splashing in the ocean for about 8 hours. still awake and i don't know why. hope the hangover doesn't hit me at work tomorrow.

carly (carly), Monday, 1 August 2005 02:05 (twenty years ago)

Whoot! Due to the several dinners I ate last night, and the glasses of water, I was blessedly hang-over free today despite that last (ill-advised) gimlet Tracer poured down my gullet around 3.30 am. Thanks to Trace for the bouze, to Nabisco for the smoke, to John for the tapes. We left the bag o'tapes on the bench outside the bar, so some lucky passer-by is now the owner of several Cat Stevens albums and a lot of inspirational seminars.

Carly + Ally = some kind of tear in the space/time continuum, as much for their differences as their similarities.

yep, the candy store. i survived the night. a young man argued angrily for hours in chinese on a cell phone last night, but otherwise all went well. so far though i'm sensing that i should have taken chinese instead of german and french.

carly (carly), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 11:46 (twenty years ago)

I can teach you some good Mandarin phrases to use on your block. Try shouting "chu! need a" but be prepared to back it up with fists.

Paul Eater (eater), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 13:10 (twenty years ago)

fists or kisses depending upon what tone i use, no doubt. er, i should probably avoid language classes at the paul school of trouble-making.

carly (carly), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 13:27 (twenty years ago)

i'm sad that i missed this. please have another.
Me too. I was out of town. I'm starting to figure if I meet some of you people in real life that even if we don't like each other, it will be a way for me to STOP POSTING NOW!

k/l (Ken L), Saturday, 6 August 2005 15:49 (twenty years ago)

k/l (Ken L), Saturday, 6 August 2005 15:50 (twenty years ago)

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 8 August 2005 19:11 (twenty years ago)

Tom, I want to hear all about your cruz. And then I want to hear it all again from Ally's point of view. Let's have another FAP for this purpose.

Laurel, Monday, 8 August 2005 19:22 (twenty years ago)

I'm checking my hand against Ally's and looking at where the band of gold is. I didn't realize you guys had done that yet. Congrats!

k/l (Ken L), Monday, 8 August 2005 19:28 (twenty years ago)

Boy, NObody looks good in those pictures, do they? Can we have another FAP and do-over?

Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 27 October 2005 18:15 (nineteen years ago)

You don't look bad, Laurel, but when I met you, I was like "Wait, I thought I'd seen a photo of her before? Maybe not."

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 27 October 2005 18:19 (nineteen years ago)

tracer hand always looks good

mookieproof (mookieproof), Thursday, 27 October 2005 18:20 (nineteen years ago)

I look like Alex has BULLIED me into letting him take that photo, is what I look like. And on second thought JtM looks kind of adorable with only one eye showing out from under his cap.

Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 27 October 2005 18:21 (nineteen years ago)

my shirt in my pic sucks.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Thursday, 27 October 2005 18:34 (nineteen years ago)

Given the chance to do it all again, I'd have refrained from posting that pic of Mookieproof and m'self.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 27 October 2005 22:48 (nineteen years ago)

I love these threads. It's like those Hanna-Barbara cartoons where all the different characters from the different shows got together and had a motorcycle race.

k/l (Ken L), Friday, 28 October 2005 03:29 (nineteen years ago)

The best car in that series was the car powered by two cavemen beating each other with clubs.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 28 October 2005 03:31 (nineteen years ago)

These guys....

so there have been weird smells now in LA, DC and NY. either we're all just more sensitive these days, or someone, good or bad, is testing something.

jdubz (ex machina), Friday, 28 October 2005 16:21 (nineteen years ago)

I'm used to occasional weird smells, but then again I live in northeastern New Jersey. There's a smell on the turnpike extension that's pretty regular - it reminds me of the cheese powder that comes with microwave popcorn, or maybe a sweaty sock. I figure it has something to do with one of the chemical plants around there.
