This is the thread for the rescheduled 4th Poptimism night.

It's back, it's Summer, it's on a Friday, it's on the 19th August, it's downstairs at the Polar Bear, I personally am going to ensure that it is the best Poptimism EVER.

£2 in, £4 after 10, cheap drinks all night, thinks kick off at about 7.30, we have a doorperson who is itching to keep undesirables out too.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 25 July 2005 10:32 (twenty years ago)

(As it happens, the 22nd August is the UK release date for "Schnappi Der Kleine Krokodil".)

Tom (Groke), Monday, 25 July 2005 10:35 (twenty years ago)

Undesirables like

http://express.howstuffworks.com/gif/gollum-intro.jpg?

BARMS, Monday, 25 July 2005 10:36 (twenty years ago)

also featuring ME NOT BEING THERE!

due to a far too hectic schedule i shall doing my first overseas gig the following evening and thus miss this, but i'm sure it'll be great anyway (and probably less indie (unless we get the lex djing again)).

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 25 July 2005 10:37 (twenty years ago)

I will however be there and happy to DJ anythiong people bring along and stick under my nose. Which usually means Tom's CD's.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 25 July 2005 10:39 (twenty years ago)

i just made three "evazev pop" CDs!!

mark s (mark s), Monday, 25 July 2005 11:07 (twenty years ago)

as part of my ongoing ilx rehabilitation programme, is there any possibility that i can get one dj slot one of these months? perhaps a 1974 set encompassing everything from the wombles to, er, the goodies.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 25 July 2005 11:12 (twenty years ago)

:( I arrive back in London four days after Poptimism.

Mädchen (Madchen), Monday, 25 July 2005 11:23 (twenty years ago)

I think it's about time I came to a Poptimism. (This one!)

Anna (Anna), Monday, 25 July 2005 11:44 (twenty years ago)

I'll be there too, obviously.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 25 July 2005 11:55 (twenty years ago)

hurray, at last a date i can actually make! well, a second one i can make, anyway. i can see if my claim on saturday that downstairs the polar bear is bigger than the main room in fabric has any foundation whatsoever.

toby (tsg20), Monday, 25 July 2005 11:55 (twenty years ago)

You spatially disturbed weirdo.

Raston Warrior Robot (alix), Monday, 25 July 2005 11:59 (twenty years ago)

i still think it might be true, in the length x width sense (i think the ceiling in fabric is prob a lot higher).

toby (tsg20), Monday, 25 July 2005 12:01 (twenty years ago)

if you open all the doors downstairs at polar bear becomes a klein bottle

mark s (mark s), Monday, 25 July 2005 12:04 (twenty years ago)

Poptimism's previous attempt to raise the roof:

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 25 July 2005 12:05 (twenty years ago)

i just made three "evazev pop" CDs!!

I would pay a price above lizards to hear these.

Leon C. (Ex Leon), Monday, 25 July 2005 12:12 (twenty years ago)

Toby, that is mental talk!

RickyT (RickyT), Monday, 25 July 2005 12:17 (twenty years ago)

bollocks. i will be drunk in a field in wales.

emsk ( emsk), Monday, 25 July 2005 12:26 (twenty years ago)

three weeks pass...
and i will be drunk in ireland, however COME ONE, COME ALL!

look, the flyer has an HILARIOUS back now:

http://www.freakytrigger.co.uk/pictures/flyers/poptimism_bk.gif

NB myself and mr swygart did go through the above band list on friday and decide that, with the exception of missy, it was ALL INDIE ANYWAY...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 15 August 2005 08:33 (twenty years ago)

argh EVIL GOLDFRAPP AEON VOID SHATTERS

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 15 August 2005 08:45 (twenty years ago)

You still on for the Wombles/Goodies set Marcello?

Vicious Cop Kills Gentle Fool (Dada), Monday, 15 August 2005 08:52 (twenty years ago)

Has Goldfrapp ever actually been played at Poptimism/Club FT? All the others definitely have.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Monday, 15 August 2005 08:53 (twenty years ago)

I played Strict Machine by Goldfrapp last time.

But then again, I also played Can and Spacemen 3, so my set was not exactly representative.

Mrs. Cranky (From Crankytown) (kate), Monday, 15 August 2005 08:58 (twenty years ago)

I'm still up for doing a '74 set, but is Poptimism (I suspect that, even if they were, the current waiting list is about seven years long bah).

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 15 August 2005 09:01 (twenty years ago)

well, it's not that bad, but it's probably at least three of four months...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 15 August 2005 09:05 (twenty years ago)

Getting into Eton's easier

Vicious Cop Kills Gentle Fool (Dada), Monday, 15 August 2005 09:11 (twenty years ago)

I read that as Elton.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Monday, 15 August 2005 09:12 (twenty years ago)

Girls Aloud and V have succumbed to indie?

Britain's Jauntiest Shepherd (Alan), Monday, 15 August 2005 09:13 (twenty years ago)

Well V are currently without a recording contract.

robster (robster), Monday, 15 August 2005 09:15 (twenty years ago)

I shall be spinning tunes, maybe even some vinyl, and am happy to take suggestions for a thematic (early) set.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 15 August 2005 09:17 (twenty years ago)

Clive: I read that as Elton.
Derek: I read it as Elton and I wrote the fucker.

Vicious Cop Kills Gentle Fool (Dada), Monday, 15 August 2005 09:20 (twenty years ago)

OK, can you put my name down for a slot please and let me know when it comes up. Ta.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 15 August 2005 09:22 (twenty years ago)

So the record players do work then? Kat was curious abt this.

RickyT (RickyT), Monday, 15 August 2005 09:22 (twenty years ago)

ooh i have forgotten the taste of blossom hill, so will likely trot along.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 15 August 2005 09:28 (twenty years ago)

Oh yes, and technologically superious that skippy CD players. The worst thing is the lack on inputs on the decks for your won, trustworthy devices.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 15 August 2005 10:00 (twenty years ago)

I have tons that I want to play but I'm particularly happy to take requests this month. Anyone got any?

Tom (Groke), Monday, 15 August 2005 10:57 (twenty years ago)

ALSO did we mention that the special guest DJ is none other than Jerry The Nipper?

ALSO ALSO did we mention that this doubles as a sort of birthday FAP for my brother Al?

I don't think we did, you know.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 15 August 2005 11:00 (twenty years ago)

Oh no oh no I am working in Canary sodding Wharf until 10.

Unless I skive that day.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 15 August 2005 11:03 (twenty years ago)

We can maybe sneak you in late at the before-10 rate Lex!

Tom (Groke), Monday, 15 August 2005 11:10 (twenty years ago)

I see that Poptimism appears in this week's "Top Five Clubs" list in Saturday's Times. Does that mean we're going to get Giles Coren and people like that coming along?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 15 August 2005 11:15 (twenty years ago)

That would be lovely, I will check with my temp agency and bank balance about taking that evening off though...

xp

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 15 August 2005 11:15 (twenty years ago)

Poptimism was one of the Critic's Picks in the Times the night I DJed, too.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 15 August 2005 11:16 (twenty years ago)

Did it make much difference to the turnout?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 15 August 2005 11:19 (twenty years ago)

I have to see if I've agreed to dogsit that night.

Or can I bring Cuchulain? He's a good dancer. If you don't mind dogbreath. Or having your leg humped.

Mrs. Cranky (From Crankytown) (kate), Monday, 15 August 2005 11:19 (twenty years ago)

I will be drunk in Ireland with Steve, sadly. Or happily, depending on how you look at it.

Tim (Tim), Monday, 15 August 2005 11:20 (twenty years ago)

This is the first Poptimism since March I will actually be able to make. Yay!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 15 August 2005 11:21 (twenty years ago)

course it's on tonight in glasgow too http://www.cplweb.com/site/index.php?page=gmonday

Britain's Jauntiest Shepherd (Alan), Monday, 15 August 2005 11:21 (twenty years ago)

It was a very good turnout that night - but I don't know how much the Times had to do with it. I think being on a Friday night will make more of a difference. I suspect the Guide and the Saturday times are more useful if you're on a Saturday or Sunday.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 15 August 2005 11:40 (twenty years ago)

Well, the turnout couldn't be worse than the night I DJ'd. :-(

Mrs. Cranky (From Crankytown) (kate), Monday, 15 August 2005 11:45 (twenty years ago)

i don't think that was in anyway to do with you dear :)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 15 August 2005 11:51 (twenty years ago)

Nevertheless, I decline to share dancefloor space with a large Irish wolfhound. Dogbreath and leg humping? This isn't Caesar's, you know.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 15 August 2005 11:56 (twenty years ago)

Pointy nose... ginger hair... slathering dogbreath from eating a Volvo... ::swoons::

http://www.antiquemapsandprints.com/SCANSB/B-0414.jpg

Mrs. Cranky (From Crankytown) (kate), Monday, 15 August 2005 12:00 (twenty years ago)

"Why am I so massive?"

Raston Warrior Robot (alix), Monday, 15 August 2005 12:02 (twenty years ago)

That picture is quite disturbing on a number of levels.

Anyway, I make official request for Starlight 'Numero Uno' now.

I am concerned about the potential dearth of punters :(

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Monday, 15 August 2005 12:03 (twenty years ago)

I can't believe anyone would miss Jerry the Nipper's traditional Betty Boo Is Doing The Do set.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Monday, 15 August 2005 12:10 (twenty years ago)

I request The Lex to officially skive!

Lucretia My Reflection (Lucretia My Reflection), Monday, 15 August 2005 12:11 (twenty years ago)

I would like to request the original Hounds of Love, natch!

(Having a bit of the Cornish Pasty Pirate problem here... is it a very LARGE dog, or a very small child?)

http://www.windhunde.de/img/wolfkind.jpg

Mrs. Cranky (From Crankytown) (kate), Monday, 15 August 2005 12:12 (twenty years ago)

for a second i misread stevem as saying "I am concerned about the potential death of punters"

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 15 August 2005 12:24 (twenty years ago)

Still I don't think Westminster Council health and safety regulations allow for the presence of a HORRIBLE DOG in a confined, hot basement.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 15 August 2005 12:25 (twenty years ago)

There is no such thing as a horrible dog!

http://altura.speedera.net/ccimg.catalogcity.com/220000/226700/226769/products/11508730.jpg

Barbara Woodhouse (kate), Monday, 15 August 2005 12:30 (twenty years ago)

a cat would be more fun though. or a hampster

ken c (ken c), Monday, 15 August 2005 12:31 (twenty years ago)

xpost:

oh yes there is.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 15 August 2005 12:32 (twenty years ago)

Well, I did promise a kiss and a guinea to any man who wore a kilt...

http://jeremycherfas.net/images/guinea-pig.jpg

Mrs. Cranky (From Crankytown) (kate), Monday, 15 August 2005 12:34 (twenty years ago)

i am not wearing a kilt on so flimsy a promise given its probable subsequent shredding by HORRIBLE DOG wch would outweigh kiss/guinea advantageousnessess.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 15 August 2005 12:36 (twenty years ago)

given how much of a success it was last friday, i'd be quite keen on hearing "since u been gone" again...

toby (tsg20), Monday, 15 August 2005 12:40 (twenty years ago)

You would have liked the ENORMOUS dog at the French guesthouse we stayed in, Kate. It was only 18 months old and as tall as a house horse shetland pony maybe. Also it had a very red muzzle and eyes which made it look as if it had been feasting on raw flesh.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 15 August 2005 12:50 (twenty years ago)

Awww, what kind of a dog was it, do you know?

Big dogs are often so goofy and friendly! Like they don't quite realise how big they are. That Great Dane in Essex was bigger than a Shetland Pony - probably verging on Welsh Pony size!

I had a Bernese Mountain Dog for a time when I was young, but my mum made me give him away because he used to take out entire tea services with a single wag of his tail. They are lovely - a bit like Saint Bernards, but with the colouring of a Rottweiller - black with red muzzles (for flesh feasting looks).

Awww, I miss having a dog of mine own. But until I have mine own garden, dogsitting will have to do.

Mrs. Cranky (From Crankytown) (kate), Monday, 15 August 2005 12:53 (twenty years ago)

It was a colossal Dalmatian, maybe not just a Dalmatian, I don't know about dogs. It had a permanently sad expression and was indeed pretty goofy and friendly, though I'm a little unnerved by dogs, so Isabel played with it more.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 15 August 2005 12:56 (twenty years ago)

Awwwww!!! I love dalmations so much! I had several while I was growing up - they're supposed to be medium sized dogs, but the breed has been edging up in size. Unless it was a Harlequin Great Dane, which are also spotted like dalmations, but perhaps twice the size.

Dalmations have a reputation for being quite fierce, but really they're just very teritorial, especially about their humans.

Mrs. Cranky (From Crankytown) (kate), Monday, 15 August 2005 12:59 (twenty years ago)

Revel in the cuteness!!!

Harlequin Great Dane:

Mrs. Cranky (From Crankytown) (kate), Monday, 15 August 2005 13:01 (twenty years ago)

Ah it looked MUCH more like one of those!

Tom (Groke), Monday, 15 August 2005 13:10 (twenty years ago)

Yay hooray! I'm looking forward to this enormously!

marianna lcl (marianna lcl), Monday, 15 August 2005 21:20 (twenty years ago)

that great dane does look enormous

ken c (ken c), Monday, 15 August 2005 21:45 (twenty years ago)

Yes.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 09:30 (twenty years ago)

the clue is in the name

Britain's Jauntiest Shepherd (Alan), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 09:49 (twenty years ago)

Not necessarily. Great Ormond Street isn't any bigger than ordinary Ormond Street!

Win A Lie-Down, Mrs. Davies (kate), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 09:50 (twenty years ago)

Our Finance guy at work is Danish though and he's huge.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 09:52 (twenty years ago)

and the great barrier reef is actually tiny. great portland street just is.

Britain's Jauntiest Shepherd (Alan), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 09:53 (twenty years ago)

PS No dogs at Poptimism, sorry Kate.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 09:59 (twenty years ago)

haha, was that meant as a vicious insult?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 10:01 (twenty years ago)

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Win A Lie-Down, Mrs. Davies (kate), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 10:44 (twenty years ago)

Certainly not!

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 10:47 (twenty years ago)

What a place to misplace a comma. It certainly gave me a bit of a turn.

Win A Lie-Down, Mrs. Davies (kate), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 10:50 (twenty years ago)

our style is the BUMPdiggyBUMPdiBUMPdiBIMPdiggydiggy (or whatever)

Tomorrow! I am looking forward to JtN's set like WOAH.

spontine (cis), Thursday, 18 August 2005 19:58 (twenty years ago)

Argh, I wanted to dress up and look pretty but EVERYTHING was in the wash, so I am rocking the "only things in my wardrobe that weren't dirty" look. Yes. And I'm wearing new pants. Mauve ones. Woo. No boots though.

Win A Lie-Down, Mrs. Davies (kate), Friday, 19 August 2005 06:54 (twenty years ago)

Could JtN start his set at 4.30 in the afternoon, please?

Or do a quick run-through in Chicken Cottage.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Friday, 19 August 2005 07:27 (twenty years ago)

I'm looking forward to this, especially as I've been in work for nearly 3 hours already.

Porkpie (porkpie), Friday, 19 August 2005 07:41 (twenty years ago)

i'm just about to head off to work right now and i am also looking forward to it

ken c (ken c), Friday, 19 August 2005 07:52 (twenty years ago)

I was looking forward to it until this morning when the world decided to fuck up my life again, and as a consequence I'm perhaps not in the right mood or frame of mind for this sort of thing. Maybe next time, though no doubt some more shit will happen to prevent me from coming to that as well.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 19 August 2005 07:58 (twenty years ago)

I sorted out the free CDs for this last night - first 28 punters only!(erm, a tribute to the Younger Younger 28s, honest, not because I snaffled a couple of the CDs for other purposes)

Tom (Groke), Friday, 19 August 2005 08:25 (twenty years ago)

Good. Maybe I'll try to get there early and not stop for dinner as I managed to spill tea all over my last free CD and now it won't play. :-(

I Dream Of Sleep (kate), Friday, 19 August 2005 08:27 (twenty years ago)

i'll be there, but maybe not until after 10.

promised i'd take a friend out for her birthday dinner tonight, followed by 'this great club night in soho!' (because i'll miss the real dinner next week) apparently, there aren't enough restaurants in soho*, so we're eating at 8 at angel. will come along as soon as we've finished, though.

*that sounds meaner than intended, i think she's planning on wussing out of poptimism, and wants to eat close to home, but it's slightly inconvenient.

colette (a2lette), Friday, 19 August 2005 08:34 (twenty years ago)

Restaurants in Soho... ::drools:: I never manage to make it past the Chinese bun shops, though.

(I'm not doing noodles before clubbing again, though, it makes me too sleepy.)

I Dream Of Sleep (kate), Friday, 19 August 2005 08:36 (twenty years ago)

Excited! (Although this clashes with the new grime night in Shoreditch bah)

I intend to not get very drunk, as I have to play tennis tomorrow. Maybe just a couple of glasses of wine.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 19 August 2005 08:41 (twenty years ago)

whatever, alex. ;-)

there aren't enough restaurants in soho*,

haha i guess your friend isn't fond of chinese food colette!

ken c (ken c), Friday, 19 August 2005 08:44 (twenty years ago)

Maybe just a couple of glasses of wine.

Famousest last words evah!

robster (robster), Friday, 19 August 2005 08:46 (twenty years ago)

Maybe just a couple of glasses bottles of wine...

I Dream Of Sleep (kate), Friday, 19 August 2005 08:47 (twenty years ago)

I forgot this was the first Friday one. I'm shuddering at the levels of catastrophic ruin that will be attained tonight.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 19 August 2005 08:53 (twenty years ago)

i'm going to go for some blackbean beef before I come tonight i think. and also the gym. go me. rox0r

ken c (ken c), Friday, 19 August 2005 08:55 (twenty years ago)

ken c (ken c), Friday, 19 August 2005 08:55 (twenty years ago)

haha i sound as if i'm still drunk.

ken c (ken c), Friday, 19 August 2005 08:56 (twenty years ago)

Maybe just a couple of glasses bottles of wine...

I did actually type 'bottles' by mistake at first :(

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 19 August 2005 08:57 (twenty years ago)

Last night was the first night I didn't drink in ages. Oh, ruin, my only friend...

I Dream Of Sleep (kate), Friday, 19 August 2005 08:58 (twenty years ago)

I had a bit of double chocolate stout last night to inspire me in my CD collection. Looking in my bag this morning I see it was all too effective.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 19 August 2005 08:58 (twenty years ago)

hot chocolate - you sexy thing?

ken c (ken c), Friday, 19 August 2005 09:00 (twenty years ago)

Britain's Jauntiest Shepherd (Alan), Friday, 19 August 2005 09:27 (twenty years ago)

Chinese food sounds nice. Maybe I will get a Sainsbury's Bag For Two.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Friday, 19 August 2005 09:31 (twenty years ago)

You're not up the duff, are you Miller? Eating for two?

Raston Warrior Robot (alix), Friday, 19 August 2005 09:34 (twenty years ago)

Have I ever been to a Poptism? Don't think so. Am working late so might come tonight from work - however have Old Firm game to watch (endure?) at 12.30pm next day. My liver's in for a "helluva beating" (Norwegian accent optional)

Diddyismus (Dada), Friday, 19 August 2005 09:35 (twenty years ago)

Somebody calls me on the phone
Say hey-hey-hey is Arty home
You wanna take a walk
You wanna go cop
You wanna go get some Chinese buns

I'm livin' on a Chinese bun
All my best things are in hock
I'm livin' on a Chinese bun
Everything is in the pawn shop

The plaster fallin' off the wall
My girlfriend cryin' in the shower stall
It's hot as a bitch
I should've been rich
But I'm just diggin' Chinese buns

I Dream Of Sleep (kate), Friday, 19 August 2005 09:36 (twenty years ago)

Here was I thinking you were making a pass at ken

Diddyismus (Dada), Friday, 19 August 2005 09:38 (twenty years ago)

Well, that too, natch.

I Dream Of Sleep (kate), Friday, 19 August 2005 09:39 (twenty years ago)

You wanna go cop
You wanna go get some Chinese buns

OI no copping of my arse!!!!

xxpost

ken c (ken c), Friday, 19 August 2005 10:07 (twenty years ago)

rofl

chinese buns are great though (and i should know!)

what kind of chinese buns are you having??? the sweet porky ones are the best.

ken c (ken c), Friday, 19 August 2005 10:08 (twenty years ago)

If "copping" is forbiddden does this mean "cupping" is allowed?

Diddyismus (Dada), Friday, 19 August 2005 10:10 (twenty years ago)

Obviously I can't eat the porky ones. (mmm, porky buns, STOP!) But I like the sweet ones with the weird red beans in them. Also, the spring onion buns. Mmmmm. And those round ones with all the sesame seeds stuck on the outside.

Aaaahh, I'm so hungry now, is it time for lunch?

I Dream Of Sleep (kate), Friday, 19 August 2005 10:12 (twenty years ago)

And those round ones with all the sesame seeds stuck on the outside.

ooh yeah - are those the ones that are hollow??? i love those cos they look HUGE but actually isn't much in it.

ken c (ken c), Friday, 19 August 2005 10:15 (twenty years ago)

Yes, I love them, they look like they're going to be filling, but they're so light. At least now, I remember, and buy a couple. Then again, I just love sesame anything.

I Dream Of Sleep (kate), Friday, 19 August 2005 10:17 (twenty years ago)

I'm staying in tonight due to lack of drinking vouchers (my social life can begin on Monday when my BIG CHEQUE clears) also my secondhand book pimp is on his hols so cannot sell my Unwanted Unsolicited Review Copies for pin money. Oh well - still a pile of tax returns to get through, bummer. That is My Weekend, argh.

suzy (suzy), Friday, 19 August 2005 10:31 (twenty years ago)

Oh. Is this tonight?

Pete (Pete), Friday, 19 August 2005 10:55 (twenty years ago)

Now I've got Chinese Rock stuck in my head (bit inappropriate for work, but still) - can someone play this tonight?

I Dream Of Sleep (kate), Friday, 19 August 2005 11:09 (twenty years ago)

I've got The Chinese Way by Level 42. Will that do?

Pete (Pete), Friday, 19 August 2005 11:20 (twenty years ago)

No. And neither will China Crisis.

I Dream Of Sleep (kate), Friday, 19 August 2005 11:21 (twenty years ago)

China in your Hand?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 19 August 2005 11:28 (twenty years ago)

China Girl?

ken c (ken c), Friday, 19 August 2005 11:29 (twenty years ago)

Some marching band anthems from the Mao era would go down a storm i reckon.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Friday, 19 August 2005 11:30 (twenty years ago)

No, no Iggy, I'll be getting enough of him in the flesh next week.

haha

http://www.chinatoday.com.cn/English/y200211/letter.htm

...But no one will forget the great chart successes such as, "China Girl," a song penned by Iggy Pop and performed by David Bowie, and "China in Your Hand" by the pop group T'Pau. It is also interesting to see how bands such as China Crisis and China Black have incorporated "China" into their names.

yes, interesting indeed.

ken c (ken c), Friday, 19 August 2005 11:33 (twenty years ago)

'Somewhere in the China' by the Shop Assistants is sure to go down a storm, I hope.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Friday, 19 August 2005 11:40 (twenty years ago)

Aah! Lovely! Now that would be perfect.

I Dream Of Sleep (kate), Friday, 19 August 2005 11:43 (twenty years ago)

I do actually have the Rough Guide TO China to play as well.

Pete (Pete), Friday, 19 August 2005 11:53 (twenty years ago)

right. i am planning on heading down to this. but i don't know when, and i don't know who is going. basically, i'm looking for a chaperone. someone to take me by the hand and lead me through the minefield that is Big Scary London Town with all its crazy newness. so, who is going when? and who wants to be my friend for the evening? dont all rush in with offers all at once. i woudln't want to get confused.

michael grant (michael digby grant), Friday, 19 August 2005 11:54 (twenty years ago)

My ex boyfriend wrote most of the Rough Guide to China!

I Dream Of Sleep (kate), Friday, 19 August 2005 11:57 (twenty years ago)

Michael - a bunch of us will be in the Polar Bear (upstairs section) before the club, if you arrive any time after 6 and find a fat bloke in a bright red shirt with a big Captain Haddock beard, that's me. And if it isn't me I hope you have an excellent time with him.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 19 August 2005 11:58 (twenty years ago)

" a fat bloke in a bright red shirt with a big Captain Haddock beard"

this sounds...well...weird. a little intriguing. but mostly weird. i look forward to it.

michael grant (michael digby grant), Friday, 19 August 2005 12:04 (twenty years ago)

I know this will probably be greeted with as much derision as when Lex said it, but I don't want to get too drunk tonight. My liver can't take it and I'm sick of talking bollocks and then cringing the next morning. (I know this is the whole point, but I just need a rest from the shame attacks.)

Anna (Anna), Friday, 19 August 2005 12:05 (twenty years ago)

i'm going to the gym after work and then at about 7:30pm head to one of the few remaining restaurants in chinatown, anyone is welcome to join me for some blackbean beef!

ken c (ken c), Friday, 19 August 2005 12:05 (twenty years ago)

Ha ha, yes, that's what you said last time, too, Anna. I'll buy an extra bottle of pink wine for you when I get to the bar.

Michael, I'll be friends with anyone who buys me a drink. Look for the loud girl with the mid-atlantic accent. I am wearing a Liberty print shirt. (What else is new?)

I Dream Of Sleep (kate), Friday, 19 August 2005 12:07 (twenty years ago)

Don't be too late or you might miss the Schnappi!

(Who am I kidding?)

Tom (Groke), Friday, 19 August 2005 12:07 (twenty years ago)

i don't know which one i'm going to yet, probably one of lisle street itself, look into each restaurant for a slim chinese dude with glasses. it'd be hard to miss me.

(or call me on me mobile)

ken c (ken c), Friday, 19 August 2005 12:08 (twenty years ago)

My liver can't take it and I'm sick of talking bollocks and then cringing the next morning.

Can I join your club too?

Diddyismus the Blind (of Alexandria) (Dada), Friday, 19 August 2005 12:10 (twenty years ago)

i drank a whole bottle of rose last night, and then sneaked a can of beer out of a party. i went to the mcdonald's for late night snacks and the dude told me i couldn't drink in there, and gave me a mcdonald's bag so i can hide my drink inside and drink from a mcdonald's paper bag, to the amusement of drunken work colleagues. it was great!!!

ken c (ken c), Friday, 19 August 2005 12:11 (twenty years ago)

Anna and Lex, I still have books for you - can I bring them along tonight? This is assuming I get there - I feel about 80% likely to cope with leaving the house, I think.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 19 August 2005 13:00 (twenty years ago)

I'll be there, Michael. You know what I look like.

Raston Warrior Robot (alix), Friday, 19 August 2005 13:23 (twenty years ago)

Anna, I'll share a bottle of wine with you. That way we can ensure we don't get drunk.

Martin, yes, books will be excellent, though if the unthinkable happens and my anti-drunkenness plans go awry, lord knows what will happen to them.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 19 August 2005 13:40 (twenty years ago)

Hmm. Trouble is, I don't think we are likely to meet often in circumstances where we can be absolutely sure that you aren't going to et drunk, Lex.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 19 August 2005 13:53 (twenty years ago)

he was even drunk playing tennis the last time

ken c (ken c), Friday, 19 August 2005 14:08 (twenty years ago)

i cannae wait for the blackbean beef!!!

ken c (ken c), Friday, 19 August 2005 14:18 (twenty years ago)

I hope the rain won't stop people coming out.

(I actually mean: Hooray, the rain means more cloakroom money!)

Pete (Pete), Friday, 19 August 2005 14:18 (twenty years ago)

I was pleased with the weather - it's always too hot down there, so a day like this helps.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 19 August 2005 14:19 (twenty years ago)

i hope so! although it may well just mean it'll be warm AND damp.

(i spent 3 hours last night upstairs at a pub with a broken A/C and sealed windows arrgh)

ken c (ken c), Friday, 19 August 2005 14:21 (twenty years ago)

I hope the rain won't stop people coming out.

It won't stop me cos I have your umbrella.

robster (robster), Friday, 19 August 2005 14:22 (twenty years ago)

Right. I'm having another coffee in a desperate attempt to stay awake, unlike last week. And not get depressed over my withering ovaries.

I Dream Of Sleep (kate), Friday, 19 August 2005 14:28 (twenty years ago)

"I'll be there, Michael. You know what I look like"

if you are who i think you are. damn interweb aliases. why can't people just use their REAL NAMES! damn fools.

i think i shall take up the offer of tom's. (drinking from six! hurrah!) and then maybe go have some food with ken. if ken doesn't mind. is it ok if i call you on your phone ken? would that be alright? i like the sound of blackbean beef. and, hopefully, the taste.

michael grant (michael digby grant), Friday, 19 August 2005 14:28 (twenty years ago)

I might pop to HMV for panic buying first so it's more likely to be 6.15 or so.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 19 August 2005 14:50 (twenty years ago)

sounds great michael yes call me!! i'll be out of the gym by 7 i'd imagine.. (inside the gym i may not have reception as it's in the basement, and also i'd be halfway through lifting 500kg of solid steel)

ken c (ken c), Friday, 19 August 2005 14:59 (twenty years ago)

also :do you have my number????!

ken c (ken c), Friday, 19 August 2005 15:02 (twenty years ago)

Gym? You working on tightening up those Chinese buns?

Diddyismus the Blind (of Alexandria) (Dada), Friday, 19 August 2005 15:03 (twenty years ago)

haha, what an amusing typo! Ken, you accidentally put a 'k' between the '500' and the 'g'!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 19 August 2005 15:03 (twenty years ago)

Clue: I was in the pub with Ailsa and Neil.

Raston Warrior Robot (alix), Friday, 19 August 2005 15:06 (twenty years ago)

roflmao! yes it was all typed in haste.. i was going to type 500 tonnes but didn't really want to boast!

ken c (ken c), Friday, 19 August 2005 15:07 (twenty years ago)

yeah, you are who i thought you were.

yes i have your number ken. i am your scary stalker.

michael grant (michael digby grant), Friday, 19 August 2005 15:09 (twenty years ago)

I've just been told I can leave early. But what the heck am I going to do for two hours? Sigh. Maybe I'll go shopping or something.

I Dream Of Sleep (kate), Friday, 19 August 2005 15:10 (twenty years ago)

...or maybe I'll just hang around and play on the interweb like the saddoe I am.

I Dream Of Sleep (kate), Friday, 19 August 2005 15:12 (twenty years ago)

come to the gym kate!

ken c (ken c), Friday, 19 August 2005 15:13 (twenty years ago)

I Dream Of Sleep (kate), Friday, 19 August 2005 15:14 (twenty years ago)

i had fun. thanks to all the people who allowed me to talk at them. you are numerous and lovely. afterwards, i got kidnapped back to sunny walthamstow. where i was force-fed HARD LIQUER. it was fun too.

michael grant (michael digby grant), Saturday, 20 August 2005 14:31 (twenty years ago)

Can someone please tell me who came to the Spanish Bar so I can attempt to piece together my fractured brain?

Apparently I saved Anna's life last night, but I don't remember this AT ALL.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Saturday, 20 August 2005 15:45 (twenty years ago)

haha this weekyear, more like

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Saturday, 20 August 2005 15:51 (twenty years ago)

Right, Spanish Bar was you, Anna and Barima plus briefly Kate, me, Abby and The Jive Session (i.e. Paul, who I can't remember whether or not I introduced you to). You and Anna were very nearly hit by the N51 crossing Oxford Street.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 August 2005 15:53 (twenty years ago)

oh god the ruin. i have no recollection whatsoever of the last hour or so of the club or of travelling back. not even a vague fuzzy memory, just a gigantic blank. anyone care to fill it in? when i woke up i had no idea whose house i was in until steve came downstairs.

on the plus side, i travelled all the way to kilburn today to play a hard hour of tennis, and hit some sweet forehands. tennis is good for hangovers, although not when you bend over to pick up the balls and feel the wine rising in your throat again.

The Lex (The Lex), Saturday, 20 August 2005 15:53 (twenty years ago)

Ah okay, that rings vague bells. Being hit by the N51 would probably have sucked.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Saturday, 20 August 2005 15:56 (twenty years ago)

Lex - turn yr MSN on and I'll fill you in. They played Under Pressure. It was quite fun.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 August 2005 16:30 (twenty years ago)

Lex, do you remember getting quite excited as I was waving the POP sign in front of your face? And then looking very annoyed as I turned it round to reveal the word INDIE?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Saturday, 20 August 2005 17:05 (twenty years ago)

Oh yes I do remember that, that was fairly early on I think. I want that sign!

The Lex (The Lex), Saturday, 20 August 2005 17:56 (twenty years ago)

Right, Matt pulled Anna out of the path of a bus they could have easily avoided if they'd kept crossing the road and not decided to run back at the last minute. I thought it was pretty dashing.

Alex kept flashing the 'INDIE' side of the sign at people.

Some chick nearly puked on my shoes at a bus stop.

I hate hot places.

I loved the Nipper's Set. It was "totally Barima".

Marcello is quite the gent and dancefloor guru.

Alex's tennis report is riddled with innuendo potential.

Drowning Man (Barima), Saturday, 20 August 2005 18:59 (twenty years ago)

dancing to Busted was intense. hello to the people i met and spoke at. just thought i'd quit lurking and say hi cos will mentioned me up thread.

jive session (elwisty), Saturday, 20 August 2005 22:28 (twenty years ago)

Aw, did Marcello go out in the end? Brilliant!

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Sunday, 21 August 2005 00:29 (twenty years ago)

i had a lot of fun making models of men pissing in urinals, with boobs.

i was going to say i wasn't drunk but i was - i smuggled out a glass of rose! woot the drunkenness was nothing compared to last night though oh dear. really hungover right now

ken c (ken c), Sunday, 21 August 2005 05:15 (twenty years ago)

you drunks.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Sunday, 21 August 2005 05:43 (twenty years ago)

Thankyou everyone for coming, I hope you all enjoyed it, we did though I won't be playing Hue & Cry again in a hurry, I made sure I rescued the POP/INDIE sign for future use, the next one is September 16th and we've made sure that it's in the diary as lasting until 2, not just in our heads as lasting until 2. Either next one or the October one will be a Club Popular #1s special.

Marcello Travolta and Jerry The Nipper - legends.

Tom (Groke), Sunday, 21 August 2005 10:46 (twenty years ago)

Don't tell me you played 'Ordinary Angel'??!!??

the huefox, Sunday, 21 August 2005 13:13 (twenty years ago)

ahh, so that's the reason I've had Labour of love in my head for the last two days. Jesus but I was hammered, after getting up at half five I got to bed at 3.30, yesterday was a bit of a write-off

Porkpie (porkpie), Sunday, 21 August 2005 13:43 (twenty years ago)

It's true. I was saved from being squashed by the N51 by Matt DC. He is a hero even though he texted me the next day in order to find out if he had actually saved my life or if I was just texting drunken crap. I can't cross roads when I'm sober, so post-rose it will always present a problem.

Can I say that the crocodille song is fucking awful. But the rest of the club was really good.

Anna (Anna), Sunday, 21 August 2005 16:14 (twenty years ago)

I am still hungover. Curse you, Blossom Hill.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Sunday, 21 August 2005 16:17 (twenty years ago)

I am not sure it is actually wine. I think it's floor cleaner tarted up with Ribena.

Anna (Anna), Sunday, 21 August 2005 16:18 (twenty years ago)

I have to say I was impressed by the Nipper's set. hoewever I bought a CD on his recommendation today and, well.......

Porkpie (porkpie), Sunday, 21 August 2005 21:57 (twenty years ago)

Oh dear lord. Yeah "just the one bottle, then" - famous last words. Last thing I remember was the ice bucket with three bottles of pink wine upturned in it complaining "I thought if you did this, someone would bring you another!" and then accosting everyone I knew demanding 20p to get another.

The was a quite high proportion of music I didn't know/wasn't keen on. Ah well, I guess it's a good thing I spent the cusp of the 80s/90s in another country.

I am very proud of myself for getting to the Spanish Bar, but not drinking any more. I ate dodgy dodgy chinese vegetables on the way home. Yum.

Did not pull (thank f*ck) but some random woman came up to me on the floor and told me what a good dancer (!) I was. Eh? Learned a lot about LiveJournal/DeadJournal. Bloody goffs. And... erm... Ach, who knows, who cares. What happens at Poptimism stays at Poptimism.

I Dream Of Sleep (kate), Monday, 22 August 2005 06:47 (twenty years ago)

Oh! I forgot about buying a GOLD FROCK COAT on the way to Poptimism. Don't call me MADAM! Humph.

I Dream Of Sleep (kate), Monday, 22 August 2005 06:48 (twenty years ago)

BORDERLINE! Feels like I'm goin to lose my mind...

Well that was all quite good fun. I managed to not have a hangover and I think Blossom Hill avoidance was key.

robster (robster), Monday, 22 August 2005 07:01 (twenty years ago)

Marcello Travolta

I'm not quite sure where the rest of the weekend went. Got home by 2:25 on Saturday morning, immediately ran bath with special attention paid to worn-out feet, bed by 3:30, up again at 7 (fool of fools but I had to do shopping etc.), went to T&G's BBQ @ Walthamstow in the afternoon but was so delayed-reaction knackered I went home again at about 6:30. Awoke on Sunday in the AFTERNOON which I haven't done for an exceptionally long time. Ditto going to clubs and dancing...

(and all this on a liquid intake of Pepsi! Well, Pepsi with exclusive MC secret ingredient added when no one was looking ahem...)

Well, going to Poptimism was the crossing of my personal Berlin Wall and I'm more than glad I did. I think I would have come anyway even if the money situation hadn't sorted itself out. Great fun, and all I can do is echo Cis' "HEARTS" further up this page. Albeit rusty and out of practice, I was still quite flattered to be referred to as a "dancing dynamo" by Tom on my way out (1:30!).

Highlights:

1. All the masochists brave enough to partner me in my three-and-a-half hours of demented dervishism, including Cis, Isobel, Lex, Ktee, Anna, Swygart, Matt DC, the splendid Barima and whoever else I encountered on my labyrinthine path.

2. That amazing Eurogabba version of "Life On Mars."

3. The POP/INDIE banner passim - Lex brandished it, I headbanged "INDIE" and kissed "POP." At night's end I retrieved banner in favour of "POP" following epic struggle with INDIE Ktee and that was how Tom managed to retrieve it safely.

4. "Thunderbirds Are Go!" Lovely.

5. Singing "Labour Of Love" from start to finish, remembering all the words and reaching the high notes argh!

6. Porkpie befuddled by my singing along lustily to "Wired For Sound."

7. Great chat with said Porkpie re. Northern Soul.

8. What a finale - "Under Pressure" - which I also sang Anthony Newley-style and just about managed to hit a hoarse top C.

9. Not actually minding That Schnappie Krokodil Song.

10. Properly meeting and talking with Barima for first time ever. Likewise, an absolute gent.

11. Compliments from Isobel re. my arthritic electric current through shoulders breakdance moves wot I've not done since about 1984.

ALTHOUGH:

Mark S and Martin sloped off early and Dadaismus stayed at the table so I was the only Old Geezer representative on the dancefloor! MUST DO BETTER NEXT TIME!!

Best time I've had in ages. Love and thanks to everyone.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 22 August 2005 07:05 (twenty years ago)

I would like a JtN setlist.

I am sorry to hear about Raston Warrior Robot's wallet.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Monday, 22 August 2005 07:19 (twenty years ago)

Oh, I somehow missed that. Damn! That sucks, Lixi.

I Dream Of Sleep (kate), Monday, 22 August 2005 07:21 (twenty years ago)

Such was my Blossom Hill befuddlement I think my setlist may be forever lost. Apparently I played a third set which I have no memory of.

I also lost my wallet on Friday night, but I just got an email from Charing Cross police station saying it was handed in. Hurrah for the honesty of drunk Londoners! Commiserations to Alix :(

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Monday, 22 August 2005 07:23 (twenty years ago)

Indeed, very sorry to hear that Alix...

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 22 August 2005 07:27 (twenty years ago)

JtN's cop story - you couldn't make it up!!

That sucks Lixi. Bah :(

Diddyismus the Blind (of Alexandria) (Dada), Monday, 22 August 2005 07:58 (twenty years ago)

I had the horrifying thought on Friday night that I was actually the oldest woman in the room. Argh! (Possibly brought on by Michael's assertion that he was the youngest person present. Or possibly second youngest.) I'm just getting The Fear because shop assistants have been calling me "Madam" a lot lately.

I Dream Of Sleep (kate), Monday, 22 August 2005 08:00 (twenty years ago)

People never take photos at Poptimism any more. Probably just as well...

Sorry about hte early end. The next one will definately go on til 2. So you'll definately get Scooter.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 22 August 2005 10:41 (twenty years ago)

The decision was probably correct - Scooter would have just hyped us up for 30 more minutes we couldn't have, whereas "Under Pressure" was a far more apposite closer ("This is our last dance"). Good job we didn't have the threatened "When September Ends," mind.

Oh yes, and nice to hear Sammy Davis Jr's vocal version of the Hawaii Five-0 theme as well - almost Northern Soul when you think about it!

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 22 August 2005 10:49 (twenty years ago)

I am needless to say somewhat relieved that people never take photos at Poptimism any more...

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 22 August 2005 10:50 (twenty years ago)

I think the woman who served me my only beer of the evening was the oldest in there.

I was also disturbed by Michael's youth.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Monday, 22 August 2005 10:52 (twenty years ago)

Yes, in some ways it was fortuitous that it kept playing, the the This Is Our Last Dance worked rather well.

It also justified us putting Bowie and Queen on the flier.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 22 August 2005 10:54 (twenty years ago)

Barstaff do not count, as they are not part of one's social group!

I forgot about the vocal version of Hawaii Five-0. Blimey. I also forgot that Jack Lord was in Doctor No. That was on the other afternoon. Jack Lord and Sean Connery on a beach, half naked, oh my, back to the horny commiseration thread with me again.

I Dream Of Sleep (kate), Monday, 22 August 2005 10:54 (twenty years ago)

Zig & Zag's 'Dem Girls' or whatever it's called sounded much better than I remembered.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Monday, 22 August 2005 10:57 (twenty years ago)

I forgot about the vocal version of Hawaii Five-O and I played it!

Zig & Zag seemed to go down well, yes, I have made a mental note of that.

You might not hear Scooter next month as it could well be a Club Popular.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 22 August 2005 10:59 (twenty years ago)

That 1995 Chart Busters 2CD set was a wise investment, eh? Scatman John!!

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 22 August 2005 11:03 (twenty years ago)

Scatman John! Love it!

Diddyismus the Blind (of Alexandria) (Dada), Monday, 22 August 2005 11:04 (twenty years ago)

Yes, it is looking more like a Popular now. (Though i think covers of Number Ones should be allowed).

Pete (Pete), Monday, 22 August 2005 11:04 (twenty years ago)

Oh dear, what a shame "Life On Mars" only got to number three, then we could have had that FANTASTIQUE Eurogabba cover again!

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 22 August 2005 11:05 (twenty years ago)

That WAS good. As is the 'Ca Plane Pour Moi' cover on the CD.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Monday, 22 August 2005 11:08 (twenty years ago)

it is number one in my heart - does this count?

mark s (mark s), Monday, 22 August 2005 11:12 (twenty years ago)

first = w.cråzy prøg

mark s (mark s), Monday, 22 August 2005 11:13 (twenty years ago)

You people are mentalists. It was the most horrifying thing I've ever heard! Until ten minutes later when they played something even more horrifying.

I Dream Of Sleep (kate), Monday, 22 August 2005 11:13 (twenty years ago)

Ah, the Schnappie Song. That will probably qualify for the next Club Popular.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 22 August 2005 11:18 (twenty years ago)

What, this fantastic Eurogabba cover?

Tom (Groke), Monday, 22 August 2005 11:21 (twenty years ago)

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!

I Dream Of Sleep (kate), Monday, 22 August 2005 11:22 (twenty years ago)

Ah, splendid, thanks for that Tom! Spent too much of Saturday looking for an Actual Copy of this with the expected nul points results.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 22 August 2005 11:22 (twenty years ago)

Top marks to the strangers who came in when Kate Bush was playing, looking a bit bemused/ scared, asked me what kind of music could be expected, was told 'er, pop, loosely', looked at each other a bit, decided that £2 wasn't a terrible gamble, and stayed for hours. Well done them!

Raston Warrior Robot (alix), Monday, 22 August 2005 11:30 (twenty years ago)

I imagine it was hearing *Percy Edwards on that Kate Bush record that made them want to stay

(*thanks to Marcello pointing this out)

Diddyismus the Blind (of Alexandria) (Dada), Monday, 22 August 2005 11:31 (twenty years ago)

No marks to the couple who tried to walk in without paying who were called back and told it was £2 to get in -

Lady: "£2? Is it really?"
Me: "It is, really"
Lady: "Forget it"

Raston Warrior Robot (alix), Monday, 22 August 2005 11:31 (twenty years ago)

Were they randoms?? I wondered all evening! Hurrah for them, they were grebt. Sorry about the Kate Bush though.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 22 August 2005 11:32 (twenty years ago)

People we didn't know! I was traumatised! (I think they made Matt DC take a picture of them, as well.)

I Dream Of Sleep (kate), Monday, 22 August 2005 11:32 (twenty years ago)

Don't apologise for the Kate Bush. I actually enjoyed it! To the point of asking what it was. "Kate Bush? Really? Wow, I might have to give that record another chance."

I Dream Of Sleep (kate), Monday, 22 August 2005 11:34 (twenty years ago)

It did seem that the randoms would always turn up during the more, er, experimental points. Mostly I just grinned, except during the Scatman, at which point I apologised.

Raston Warrior Robot (alix), Monday, 22 August 2005 11:35 (twenty years ago)

I loved that Kate Bush. It is one of the few songs I remember which is a pity as I would have loved to have been aware of Galang.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 22 August 2005 11:37 (twenty years ago)

How could you not love it?!!?

Diddyismus the Blind (of Alexandria) (Dada), Monday, 22 August 2005 11:44 (twenty years ago)

That 1995 Chart Busters 2CD set

!?!?!?!!!!

They had that on them, and they DIDN'T play Independent Love Song?!?!?!!!!!

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 22 August 2005 12:00 (twenty years ago)

Would this also explain why 'Shut Up And Sleep With Me' by Sebastian was played? Or did I imagine that as well?

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Monday, 22 August 2005 12:06 (twenty years ago)

Neither Zig and Zag or Sin with Seb were from that 2CD set, they were on my CDs I'd prepared earlier in the week.

S with S was played to get certain individuals dancing in amusing ways, which it did quite well.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 22 August 2005 12:10 (twenty years ago)

Zig and Zag was on that CD though.

Independent Love Song was almost played...

Pete (Pete), Monday, 22 August 2005 13:04 (twenty years ago)

I don't know any of you people, yet nonetheless I find reading these accounts of drunken madness — the build-up, the fevered anticipation, the brief pause while the event takes places followed by post after post of hungover regret, shame and reflection — a strangely comforting read. It's a bit lilke those people in The Truman Show who just like to keep Truman on telly all night while they sleep so they don't feel lonely.

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Monday, 22 August 2005 14:19 (twenty years ago)

(Heh. "Regret, shame and reflection" usually = "thinly veiled boasting" but there you go, the English, etc.)

I Dream Of Sleep (kate), Monday, 22 August 2005 14:23 (twenty years ago)

Among us Celts: "Regret, shame and reflection" usually = "Regret, shame and reflection"

Diddyismus the Blind (of Alexandria) (Dada), Monday, 22 August 2005 14:26 (twenty years ago)

Okay, it's half four on Monday afternoon, could everyone stop talking about fun I didn't have? :)

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 22 August 2005 14:27 (twenty years ago)

Sorry, Andrew. It was horrible. Appalling. So boring. The record player broke. No one danced. No one drank. They ran out of pink wine and everyone went home early. The end.

I Dream Of Sleep (kate), Monday, 22 August 2005 14:30 (twenty years ago)

I think it's entirely possible that they HAD run out of pink wine by the end.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 22 August 2005 14:35 (twenty years ago)

No - they did not run out, but the barperson had to go in the back room and crack open another case by our last bottle!

I Dream Of Sleep (kate), Monday, 22 August 2005 14:36 (twenty years ago)

Poptimism, I am proud of you.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 22 August 2005 14:52 (twenty years ago)

Quiet you, you're supposed to be racked with guilt!

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Monday, 22 August 2005 15:06 (twenty years ago)

Considering he had to be *carried* home, I think actually Alex should be experincing at least a touch of guilt. ;-)

I Dream Of Sleep (kate), Monday, 22 August 2005 15:07 (twenty years ago)

I experienced far far more than a touch of guilt on Saturday!

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 22 August 2005 15:11 (twenty years ago)

Good, keep experiencing it. My arms still ache.

Raston Warrior Robot (alix), Monday, 22 August 2005 15:13 (twenty years ago)

Ooh missus etc.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Monday, 22 August 2005 15:16 (twenty years ago)

could everyone stop talking about fun I didn't have?

I second that!

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Monday, 22 August 2005 15:16 (twenty years ago)

Sorry, I am only teasing.

Raston Warrior Robot (alix), Monday, 22 August 2005 15:17 (twenty years ago)

Anyway, obviously I am a robot and my arms don't really feel anything.

Raston Warrior Robot (alix), Monday, 22 August 2005 15:18 (twenty years ago)

As the nausea passes so does the guilt, I find.

(though the guilt has come hand-in-hand with uncertainty about what exactly to feel guilty for but also the surety that there was something to feel guilty for)

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 22 August 2005 15:20 (twenty years ago)

I am also uncertain as to how much guilt The Lex should feel. But put it this way dude, if you didn't live half a mile down the road from me, how the fuck would you have gotten home??? I've never been quite THAT drunk THAT far from home so it's hard to compare with past experiences. Seriously, I really would take it easier from now on.

I also want to put on a Green X Man uniform and bark at Anna 'you must be out of your tiny mind!', like in that classic advert (was it Alvin Stardust?).

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Monday, 22 August 2005 15:26 (twenty years ago)

Steve we are turning into everyone's dad.

Raston Warrior Robot (alix), Monday, 22 August 2005 15:31 (twenty years ago)

To everything, turn...turn...turn...there is a season...

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Monday, 22 August 2005 15:33 (twenty years ago)

I'm not ready to be a dad.

Raston Warrior Robot (alix), Monday, 22 August 2005 15:34 (twenty years ago)

I prefer to think of myself as a despot.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Monday, 22 August 2005 15:35 (twenty years ago)

Can I still be a maverick?

Raston Warrior Robot (alix), Monday, 22 August 2005 15:37 (twenty years ago)

I prefer to think of myself as a teapot.

Diddyismus the Blind (of Alexandria) (Dada), Monday, 22 August 2005 15:39 (twenty years ago)

Can I be Ice Man?

marianna lcl (marianna lcl), Monday, 22 August 2005 15:40 (twenty years ago)

I am Teh Grinch.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Monday, 22 August 2005 15:47 (twenty years ago)

I'd like to remember the Pet Shop Boys/Dusty Springfield singalong as the night's greatest moment.

BARMS, Monday, 22 August 2005 17:44 (twenty years ago)

So this morning I discovered that I'm coming to teh next Poptimism! What should I expect?

Adam In Real Life (nordicskilla), Monday, 22 August 2005 17:46 (twenty years ago)

Will there be GRITTY SUBLOW BASS?

Adam In Real Life (nordicskilla), Monday, 22 August 2005 17:47 (twenty years ago)

um, well, the next one is likely to be club popular, ie all number ones all the time, but we haven't quite decided yet...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 22 August 2005 18:08 (twenty years ago)

ie Oxide & Neutrino!

I'd like to remember the Pet Shop Boys/Dusty Springfield singalong as the night's greatest moment.

I'd like to remember the Pet Shop Boys/Dusty Springfield singalong :(

I like the idea of Steve and Lixi as ILX mum & dad. They are very good at going above and beyond the call of duty when it comes to rescuing drunkards.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 22 August 2005 20:38 (twenty years ago)

I'd like Steve to hold me like a baby, brush my hair and sing me a sweet lullaby.

Adam In Real Life (nordicskilla), Monday, 22 August 2005 20:39 (twenty years ago)

Hey Lex you left your bag of books here too, cluttering up my living room, it's an outrage etc.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Monday, 22 August 2005 20:42 (twenty years ago)

Oh, I'm glad they didn't get lost! I thought they probably would have done, with that degree of drunkenness.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 22 August 2005 20:47 (twenty years ago)

Oh yes that's where they are, I was very confused yesterday because I couldn't find them but I knew they were somewhere safe. I can pop round at the weekend to pick them up, or whenever's convenient.

You need more clues in your living room as to who you are!

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 22 August 2005 20:56 (twenty years ago)

I will hang a self-portrait up as long as you promise never to do that again.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Monday, 22 August 2005 21:11 (twenty years ago)

Yes dad.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 22 August 2005 21:28 (twenty years ago)

Tom (Groke), Monday, 22 August 2005 21:57 (twenty years ago)

It was Dave Prowse, wasn't it? Or was Alvin Stardust in an earlier one? Or are you mixing up his Ziggy Stardust Goes Raod Safety outfit?

I think you should all go easy.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 06:31 (twenty years ago)

No, Alvin Stardust was in an earlier one and he did say to the recidivist kiddies in question: "Are you out of your tiny minds?"

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 06:33 (twenty years ago)

4. Barry Adamson - "Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Pelvis" (Jarvis Cocker collaboration, a long-ago a.m.a. favourite, thanks Ally for introducing me to it!)

I'm sorry, but this is as far as I got before I ripped the CD out of the player and chucked it across the room. :-P

robster (robster), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 06:47 (twenty years ago)

You would think, wouldn't you, that that would have traumatised me enough not to forget it. Still, very good of Alvin to think of the kids, and a happy coincidence that a cameraman was passing by at the time.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 07:05 (twenty years ago)

and for those words to just materialise in the air between Alvin and said cameraman.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 08:34 (twenty years ago)

They were on the lens.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 08:39 (twenty years ago)

Steve? Why am I out of my mind? I was less drunk than many (true, I think Kate drank most of the bottles we shared, I was taking it slowly, honest dad), I just wasn't paying attention to crossing the road... Okay fair point.

Anna (Anna), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 09:02 (twenty years ago)

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Slander and lies, Anna. I kept filling your glass when you weren't looking. You drank as much of those bottles as I did.

I Dream Of Sleep (kate), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 09:03 (twenty years ago)

This new 'stevem Dad' meme isn't as good as the 'Lex indie' meme.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 09:05 (twenty years ago)

Is everyone is going to start calling us mum and dad now? Please don't. I am not a dad. Or a mum. In fact I hate the word 'mum'. It's rubbish. And a deodorant.

I shall have to work on my non-mum maverick behaviour.

Raston Warrior Robot (alix), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 09:05 (twenty years ago)

! That is totally unfair! Do you remember the following conversation?

Me: Kate, where is the wine?
Kate: [looks sheepish] I drank it all! [giggles] If you give me 20p I can get more!

Anna (Anna), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 09:06 (twenty years ago)

The Stevem Dad meme does seem to have more evidenc ethan the Lex Indie meme. And he owns at least on Smog LP!

Anna was the picture of decorum on Friday. (Is this where I put in a not-making-it-in-any-way-better "for her". Probably not).

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 09:11 (twenty years ago)

I remember the conversation, but I do distinctly remember it being "*We* drank it all. Give me 20p and I will get us more!"

I Dream Of Sleep (kate), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 09:12 (twenty years ago)

I do not nor have I ever owned a Smog album.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 09:13 (twenty years ago)

No, I was drunk, but I was in no way near as drunk as most of you have seen me, or indeed as most of you. I was def.able to get home without talking to random strangers/ falling asleep on the bus for six hours/ needing to be carried by Steve and Lixi.I looked at my sent text messages the next day and there were no typos. Proof, of a kind.Remember, I didn't get there until after nine. I was on Gareth Time.

Anna (Anna), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 09:15 (twenty years ago)

No matter anyway Kate. More pink wine for this evening?

Anna (Anna), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 09:15 (twenty years ago)

Luckily you did not have Gareth's music taste for the night.
HE ASKED FOR WEEZER!

(Possibly worse: I ALMSOT PLAYED SOME).

(Possibly even worse, I seem to have misunderstood the meaning of Guilt Free)

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 09:20 (twenty years ago)

I somehow seem to have ended up with THREE bottles of pink wine for tonight. One is even strawberry wine (and fizzy to boot!) - I did several shops at the weekend, and every time I thought "oh, rehearsal at mine this week, better get some pink wine" and bought another bottle. Only to get home and find bottle(s) already in the fridge! Oh my!

(I cannot wait until Emsk starts asking for our riders - "Six bottles of pink wine, please.")

I Dream Of Sleep (kate), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 09:21 (twenty years ago)

And tights!

Anna (Anna), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 09:22 (twenty years ago)

And dancing boys.

I Dream Of Sleep (kate), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 09:35 (twenty years ago)

Stevem - three words.

BARMS, Tuesday, 23 August 2005 09:53 (twenty years ago)

Was TB2K3 the incident where Steve set a new cashpoint-related gold standard for drunkeness?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 10:00 (twenty years ago)

I knew you would say that Matt, but The Lex was even drunker on Friday than I was that night. Proof being that I was still actually capable of at least staggering, and coherent enough to haggle with the driver of the cab Swygart and Dom P put me in - and I remember pretty much everything that happened.

On the other hand I was bed ridden for most of the following day whereas Our Indie Darling here was able to go and play tennis for Cliff's sake.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 10:01 (twenty years ago)

Wow, am I glad that my most drunken moments have not occurred at ILX related nights!

I Dream Of Sleep (kate), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 10:04 (twenty years ago)

Aha there are alcoholic skeletons in dad's closet!

I went to a house party on Saturday night too, and was able to consume even more wine.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 10:05 (twenty years ago)

Was Lex drunker than I was on the Champions League final night when you tried to use your Dad powers on me?

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 10:05 (twenty years ago)

(and I ran away into the night and wandered until 5am)

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 10:06 (twenty years ago)

I went to a house party on Saturday night too, and was able to consume even more wine.

Where was the party/how did you get home??

Tom you fiend!

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 10:10 (twenty years ago)

Attention Anna - You appear to have left yourself logged in at an internet cafe and there is a weirdo emailing me from your hotmail account. I'd check your sent mail if I were you.

(Don't worry, it's not that creepy, just thought I'd mention it)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 10:12 (twenty years ago)

Where was the party/how did you get home??

the party was in Canonbury, I walked over to Dalston and got a couple of night buses from there. I did fall asleep on the 8 but woke up just in time!

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 10:18 (twenty years ago)

you can't have drunk anywhere near as much wine then ;)

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 10:24 (twenty years ago)

Shit, shit, my sent messages don't save! Plus, I wasn't logged in!

Anna (Anna), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 12:10 (twenty years ago)

Can you email me and pass on what was sent please? I'm hoping it's only you as I was just about to reply to a message of yours when my time ran out. It logged me out automatically, but maybe something came up when the station was reactivated.
