Yes, myself and Piscesboy met through ILX (mainly due to the Annie thread on ILM) and we spent about nine months planning and plotting and gestating and now we have come up with a clubnight and you are all welcome (most especially Stevem, Alex from Doncaster, Barima and anyone who is in the North of England and likes !POP!).

Affectian (Affectian), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 18:52 (twenty years ago)

i'd like to come to this, but it might have come a week too early for me

charltonlido (gareth), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 19:17 (twenty years ago)

I heartily endorse this event or product.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 19:48 (twenty years ago)

This looks great, unfortunately I will be many thousands of miles away.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 19:50 (twenty years ago)

oooh, that looks good! I might have to start planning a trip to manchester...

Cathy (Cathy), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 19:54 (twenty years ago)

i heartily endorse all those full stops!

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 20:05 (twenty years ago)

I like the kissing girl and that the Joshua Brooks still exists.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 21:44 (twenty years ago)

i shall be there in spirit.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 22:38 (twenty years ago)

The girl could be N.'s sister. (I don't know his real sisters.)

youn, Tuesday, 26 July 2005 22:45 (twenty years ago)

Gah, working.

Matt (Matt), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 09:13 (twenty years ago)

Gah, at a wedding.

Will put the August date in diary though, it looks great.

Bill A (Bill A), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 13:42 (twenty years ago)

Gah, utterly no excuse.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 13:44 (twenty years ago)

Gah, in Greece

but i enjoyed the FutureSonic events that were popping up in manchester last weekend.

Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 13:47 (twenty years ago)

i'll try and bring a few with me.

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 13:56 (twenty years ago)

Forget the gahs everyone, just come down to one some other time, it'll be running for like, ever (hopefully). If you want any advice on where to stop, what other bars to check out, etc then just email me or Pisceboy and we'll be your helpful hosts for the weekend.

And here's the rest of our big nonsense-filled mailout text:

----------------------

Clique is having pleasures that aren't 'guilty'.
Clique is being 18+ and dancing without wearing a school uniform.
Clique is 'so good it's fantastic' rather than 'so bad it's good.'
Clique is having too much of everything, a few too many times.

The nu-pop of the past five years is as good as any. Clique gives you
this, together with the primo pop from the past - post-disco to
pre-house, chart rave to new wave. Clique is where Jam & Lewis and
Chic productions collide with Richard X and the Neptunes. Future
classics vs mashups vs poprock vs electro-dance.

The new slinky dance digital disko sound has been filling floors
across Manchester – the Jacques Lu Cont remixes, Xenomania
productions, Felix Da Housecat mixes – only for the kids to stop
biting on the neon and sit down because retrogressive indie rock has
stained the sound.

A city whose heart beats to a rhythm as strong as ours deserves
better. A place to come and dance ALL NIGHT. No half-hearted live
acts, no coitus interruptus.

Clique gives glamour without sleaze, decadence without degradation.
Clique gives glitter that dazzles. Clique's pop flirts and fizzes over
the sides.

Clique is a gimmick-free night in the old school sense, with a new
feeling not a new idea. The 'concept' is: a place to dance to the best
in digi-pop.

We don't care about format. No one cares about format. Anything goes.
Vinyl to mp3 to CD to C90 to flexi-discs off a box of Rice Krispies.

The only question is:

DOES IT MAKE THE HEART BEAT FASTER?

Affectian (Affectian), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 14:13 (twenty years ago)

Is there a bar?

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 14:15 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, two. One upstairs, one downstairs. Pretty cheap too.

Affectian (Affectian), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 14:26 (twenty years ago)

what does 'please dress up for dancing' mean? it sounds kind of intimidating. i want to go sometime though!

spontine (cis), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 21:23 (twenty years ago)

Joshua Brooks was previously known as the Dry Bar right? I rather liked that venue.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 21:25 (twenty years ago)

Don't be intimidated cis, it's a polite request for people to dress up a bit. To dance, like. And yes, please come along sometime. If anyone does come down, please come over and say hello.

No Stevem, Joshua Brooks used to be Sofa bar and before that it was Joshua Brooks once more. It's the place where Freelance Hellraiser played that time when you were in town. It's looking better now though without the sofas, and they spent a ton on a new soundsystem.

Affectian (Affectian), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 21:30 (twenty years ago)

WOAH! now this looks ace!
but then i would say that.

Yeah do come along ILM/ILX crew, it's *your* fault this is happening, and it really wouldn't be the same without at least some of you there!

piscesboy, Thursday, 28 July 2005 13:33 (twenty years ago)

Sofa Bar. I knew I'd mixed them up. Cheers.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Thursday, 28 July 2005 13:34 (twenty years ago)

Live tonight!

piscesboy, Friday, 29 July 2005 12:32 (twenty years ago)

ian, you know i don't dress up so could you please tell the (your) bouncers that the scruff bag gets in for free?

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Friday, 29 July 2005 13:10 (twenty years ago)

Don't worry Godders, I've bought you a special silver cocktail dress. The bouncers will help you put it on when you arrive.

Affectian (Affectian), Friday, 29 July 2005 14:36 (twenty years ago)

I am entirely locked in yorkshire tonight and contrite re. this, next month no such excuses will be forthcoming, I sort-of PROMISE.

Alex in Rotherham (Alex in Doncaster), Friday, 29 July 2005 14:45 (twenty years ago)

So, what did I miss?

BARMS, Tuesday, 2 August 2005 12:27 (twenty years ago)

In all honesty, and all club-promoter bullshit aside, it was fucking great. By midnight we were almost at capacity, a real beautiful dressed-up crowd, dancefloor pumping all night, loads of gurning 20somethings going mental to Rex The Dog remixes, we had much more gay guys down than we expected (Manc seems to have this real undebelly of impossibly good-looking well-dressed non-mainstream young gay men), we've had a bunch of emails/texts saying how much they loved it. The thing now is to ramp it up to make it even better next time (hoping to have a projection of tons of obscure music vids - Flirts, Animotion, Cover Girls, Chic, etc). Only thing was, a bunch of my single female friends said they wished there were more single straight guys there - so if any single straight guys are reading this (and like dance-pop, obv) then your odds of finding loving are pretty good here.

So Barms, Alex in Rotheram, Stevem, Tag, Gareth, Cathy, N., Bill, Grimy, Matt, Ste, Godwin, Cis and anyone else reading this, do come to the next one - email me or Piscesboy and we'll be your guides.

I'll wazz my playlist up on here later, and Piscesboy, you do the same too.

Affectian (Affectian), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 12:44 (twenty years ago)

Also, what surprised me was the number of people asking for tracks by the Knife, and Rex The Dog stuff. I didn't think they were so well-known (outside of internet msg boards at least), and there aren't many, if any, other clubs round here that regularly play them out.

Affectian (Affectian), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 12:47 (twenty years ago)

Well done. Really sorry I couldn't make it...was ill like a dog.

The next one coincides with a big weekend in London. Balls. After all, I'm a straight single guy.

Espionage is on August 13th by the way. Tell your friends.

Tag (Tag), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 17:57 (twenty years ago)

"a bunch of my single female friends said they wished there were more single straight guys there"

oh Affectian, you have got this promotion thing down pat!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 18:47 (twenty years ago)

"a bunch of my single female friends said they wished there were more single straight guys there"

Predictably, this just ruined my life.

Negativa, True Believer (Sheryl Crow in a Britney costume) (Barima), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 19:34 (twenty years ago)

haha I know it does sound like I'm Max Cliffording it up but it's true. One of the girls lurks on here so she should come along and agree. Also, another of my mates, Katie, was quite bothered as she has no gaydar and regularly wastes evenings chatting up gay men, and another chum, Nichola said pretty much the same thing.

Ok and here's the stuff I played, it was mixed in with stuff my DJ pardner played, we pretty much agreed on each track. And if I'm honest, he's a much better DJ than I am so come on Piscesboy, wack your list on here too. (oh and we played that Goldfrapp song twice because if you look closely at the flyer we mistakenly put them on twice. Only one person noticed on the night)

Affectian (Affectian), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 21:37 (twenty years ago)

And we ended at 2am with a big pause... then slowly upped the volume into Jacque Lu Cont's mix of 'Mr Brightside' while Piscesboy ran about using his bubble-blowing machine, blitzing the minds of all the dancing pillheads.

Affectian (Affectian), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 21:42 (twenty years ago)

That setlist is 70% hottness. Don't suppose there are any really great jobs in Manc and it's become a really nice place since I left? I really did wanna be there, though I'm worried I'll miss the next one too.

BARMS, Wednesday, 3 August 2005 08:08 (twenty years ago)

yeah i have to say we had a real blast. such a rush it was! you guys would love it i think judging from the response, and for a 'first go' it was way better than we could have expected. even the venue owners/ managemment looked pleased! i have a vague idea of what i played so i'l shove it up sometime.

roll on august's event!

piscesboy, Wednesday, 3 August 2005 12:04 (twenty years ago)

And we ended at 2am with a big pause... then slowly upped the volume into Jacque Lu Cont's mix of 'Mr Brightside' while Piscesboy ran about using his bubble-blowing machine, blitzing the minds of all the dancing pillheads.

This sounds awesome. Keep this going until I have uni-going chums back in The North, pls.

Michael Philip Philip Philip Avoidant (Ferg), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 12:51 (twenty years ago)

Affectian did you get that Le Club track yet? Play more songs sung in foreign languages ;)

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 12:53 (twenty years ago)

I am quite rubbish at the 'play big crowd-pleasing tunes everyone knows' thing admittedly, so my advice should be treated with a salty pinch of kid gloves.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 12:54 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
Stevem, I got that Le Club track but then I deleted 4gb of mp3s by accident and that was one, I'll get it again.

Affectian (Affectian), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 19:19 (twenty years ago)

And here's our blurb for this Friday. Email me or Piscesboy if you're coming and want to know some good bars, and what to do on Saturday and whatnot.

=========================

"Of course they are only pop records. But then, bullets are only
metal, money is only paper and religion is only old books when all is
said and done" - Gary Mulholland

Well, if the club scene is dead during the summer months, somebody
forgot to tell the Clique clubkids. Dancing to the dance-pop of the
future and the right-now, the July debut saw the city's bold &
beautiful out in force and wearing their finest shoes.

"I ricochet around the world on pink champagne, it's easy" – Girls Aloud

On the playlist this time we promise hysteria-inducing street sounds,
from Jam & Lewis to Richard X via The Neptunes, and all the best
remixes of pop that's bossing the charts. With new releases from
Rachel Stevens, Goldfrapp and Franz Ferdinand rubbing up against
legendary tracks from Trevor Horn, Prince and Bobby O, we're giving
you future classics and the forgotten and lost.

"I am taken away by the magic of the music and the way that a flat
black disc with a hole in the middle transmitted that magic into the
world" Paul Morley

Clique is now confirmed for every month. Dress up for dancing and
begin the weekend in style. Djs Piscesboy and Niche Ian will be
firing the best digital dance-pop straight into the hearts of the
most glamorous pop kids in the North, and right over the heads of the
rock-addled wasters.

"Rock, as we know it, is finished" - Ian Penman

Clique is here to make your heart beat faster, for longer.

What are the flange benefits like now you're a DJ/Club Promoter Affectian?

j0e, you and Alex (In Doncaster) were absolute stars and every popclub in the UK should be begging you both to come down. We got some great photos of the night with some awesome shots of you two tearing up the dancefloor, I'll link to them on here when we get the site set up.

Affectian (Affectian), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 10:51 (twenty years ago)

Haha you are most kind. Def want to go again soon.

Can't wait to see the pics. In the meantime, here's a recent photo of me showing off one of my killer moves:

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Monday, 21 November 2005 15:00 (nineteen years ago)

Fookin Spain, youse a big mong. Mek us sum reet mixes of stuff, and we'll crack em on. We were hoping Barima would be up for DJ set this time round but there's been neither hide nor hair from him. Maybe you'd both like to tagteam up for a double-header early next year?

Also, I think Pisces and I will be down Londontown around Valentines Day for a set at BigSexyLand (www.bigsexyland.co.uk) so we should hook up there.

Affectian (Affectian), Monday, 21 November 2005 15:35 (nineteen years ago)

Actually, I thought you didn't need me! I will happily do it next year, with or without Steve.

Will be good to see you in LDN too.

BARMS, Tuesday, 22 November 2005 09:49 (nineteen years ago)

Can't wait for this one. I mean i literally can't wait for it, very excited indeed. The local press we've had today has been so very kind to us, we have all sorts of great new tunes n mixes to play with, we're battling against local predictions of snow n rain n lord knows what else *and* we're packing Mel and Kim and we're not afraid to use it. Well i mean i'm not at least!

...but if you can't make it, come join us on our board sometime!

failing that yeah we'll see yers in LDN in February for the Valentine's caper.

Take this on tour to Exeter.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 18:47 (nineteen years ago)

damn! bring it to this here london too.

although...what's this i see, the following night in london town? why, if it isn't charlie no4 blatantly stealing Ian's thread for his own evil ends...

http://static.flickr.com/33/65470831_218e27d603.jpg

come one, come all!

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 19:36 (nineteen years ago)

£1.99! brilliant!!

that'll make it easy on the person who's doing the door!

piscesboy, Wednesday, 23 November 2005 22:43 (nineteen years ago)

What the-? Cheeky bleedin Charlie number four. Only messin, looks like a good playlist, all the best with that.

And yeah BARMS, we were up for getting you on the decks - there are a few messages scattered about ILX saying so but not to worry, we'll sort it for next year.

Tag, no comment but ask yourself - WWJD?

Affectian (Affectian), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 23:13 (nineteen years ago)

That used to be "my" pub!! Have fun youse!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 23:27 (nineteen years ago)

I think Jesus would go to Krakow too. That's where the last pope was from.

Tag (Tag), Thursday, 24 November 2005 10:55 (nineteen years ago)

Mr jones, you read that e-mail i sent?

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Thursday, 24 November 2005 11:18 (nineteen years ago)

Aright Godders, yeah I sent you a reply yesterday but my email's been playing up so I'll send it again now.

Affectian (Affectian), Thursday, 24 November 2005 12:44 (nineteen years ago)

HAHAHAHAHAHA!

I just busted you guys dissing my Knife/Rex The Dog Stylus thing!

The best part, Ian, is when you said I've done better. Like, where? There's reasons why I'm not a regular music writer, dude!

BARMS, Thursday, 24 November 2005 12:48 (nineteen years ago)

haha I only realised it was you after musing over it a while. and uh, *backtracks furiously* your general discourse on ILM is a thing of wonder! it is!

Affectian (Affectian), Thursday, 24 November 2005 12:50 (nineteen years ago)

Well, I don't think it is. The best thing I did was fill in for Swygart's old chart rundown last year, and the occasional musing on my LiveJournal.

The best part about the whole Rex thing is that I've listened to the 'Drop The Pressure' mix more often in one week than I have to 'Heartbeats' for a year (no joke, THAT'S his best mix). Heck, when I wrote that review, I felt I had to write about something the ILX-massive would identify with - fortunately, I have certainly dropped that pressure.

BARMS, Thursday, 24 November 2005 12:54 (nineteen years ago)

I've not listened to his mix of Pressure much. All the fashionable gays in Manchester have decided Mylo is OLD NEWS so we have to steer clear of anything to do with him now. :(

Affectian (Affectian), Thursday, 24 November 2005 12:58 (nineteen years ago)

But I thought you were straight?

I am not surprised about that Mylo thing tho' - I played 'DTP' in the week it came out at a house party in Manc exactly 2 years ago to the blankest-faced, least dancey crowd I've ever seen.

BARMS, Thursday, 24 November 2005 13:14 (nineteen years ago)

"motherfucker's gonna desk-top publiiiiiish..."

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Thursday, 24 November 2005 13:16 (nineteen years ago)

£1.99! brilliant!!

that'll make it easy on the person who's doing the door!

haha everyone says that! what they don't know (til i tell 'em) is that the penny change comes in the form of a very pretty such great heights badge with the lady on it and the logo an' that.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 24 November 2005 13:18 (nineteen years ago)

But I thought you were straight?

am looking forward to your reply Affectian. ;->

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Thursday, 24 November 2005 13:18 (nineteen years ago)

My sexuality is a mystery to all but Goodwin. And my girlfriend who gets a bit peeved at me about it.

Clique goes like this: the attractive girls all dancing on the dancefloor, going crazynuts: http://www.clubclique.co.uk/gallery_pages_oct05/oct_2005_pix/01.jpg
(also see: http://www.clubclique.co.uk/gallery7.htm) with all the handsome 20something gay men standing about the outskirts in their white shoes, stroking their chin and giving us a non-stop critique: http://www.clubclique.co.uk/gallery_pages_august05/august05_optimsed/11.jpg
Oh and of course you've got not-goodwin, lurching about the venue like Calum Best gone wrong:
http://www.skmu.no/digimaker/pictures/cocktailparty_pzKs4dty.JPG

We're completely at the mercy of the gays, kinda like how the mafia REALLY run that downtown laundrette so it is with us.

Affectian (Affectian), Thursday, 24 November 2005 13:56 (nineteen years ago)

I used to think the whole "attractive girls at Clique" thing was a slight exaggeration, but I guess I owe Ian and Pisces more faith'n that!

Place a framed photo of me from one of the "What Do You Look Like?" threads next to the decks tomorrow and mark it "In Absentia" for the ladies.

BARMS, Thursday, 24 November 2005 15:12 (nineteen years ago)

Here’s me thinking I did it discreetly.

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Thursday, 24 November 2005 15:21 (nineteen years ago)

This looks great! And that boy on the flyer is LOVELY.

It almost makes me wish I knew someone in Manchester.. Although the Fashionable Gays sound a bit frightening.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Thursday, 24 November 2005 16:41 (nineteen years ago)

No no, the Fashionable Gays are wonderful, very friendly guys. Smart, handsome, impeccably turned out and provide a valuable service as eye candy for drunk girls. I exaggerate a touch about the non-stop critique thing, but I certainly listen to their thoughts on music.

The guy in the white suit in the pic above keeps an amusing blog that I keep meaning to start a thread about: http://www.crimpers-of-fire.blogspot.com/

Oh and Clique! Is! Tonight! Come all, come one! (and then scoot off to Charlie's shindig tomorrow!)

BARMS, your old housemate Gary Ryan wrote a great article about Clique for Manchester's weekly listings magazine - namedropping Morley and fighting the good fight against the Libertines fans (who seem to be spawning like rats in this fair city). I'll link to it here when it goes online.

Affectian (Affectian), Friday, 25 November 2005 11:29 (nineteen years ago)

Nick & me will definitely be coming, so have a couple of pints on the bar ready & it better be good as I’m expecting the time of my life.

Calum best gone wrong!?!?

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Friday, 25 November 2005 12:10 (nineteen years ago)

(and then scoot off to Charlie's shindig tomorrow!)

haha thanks for the props!

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Friday, 25 November 2005 12:19 (nineteen years ago)

Calum best gone wrong!?!?

Oh ok, Fran Cosgrove on an off day then. See you down there later Joshua. [Joshua in Joshua Brooks! I might make you a badge with a picture of that guy on]

Affectian (Affectian), Friday, 25 November 2005 12:24 (nineteen years ago)

Geez, what is it about Manc and smackhead rock "stars" anyway? Get more Sugababes fans.

BARMS, Friday, 25 November 2005 12:52 (nineteen years ago)

WE! ARE! YOUR FRIENDS!

COME ON THE POPKIDS.

PISCESBOY, Friday, 25 November 2005 16:28 (nineteen years ago)

haha that justice remix is totally on our playlist too!

so how was clique, manc-kids?

and are any londonish types coming to such great heights this evening?

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Saturday, 26 November 2005 12:03 (nineteen years ago)

It was really really great, the best one yet. Should be even better when we get to stay open til 3am in the new year. The new set of pictures should be up later this week too. The only sad thing is that we've got to wait a full two months til the next one.

Affectian (Affectian), Monday, 28 November 2005 14:45 (nineteen years ago)

That's a shame, but knowing you'll have some crazy late license for the next one is inpiring (well, seeing as I was younger and had more energy back in Manc, the 2am cut-off points always saddened me).

Naturally, we'll email closer to the time - I definitely have to play with you guys next year.

BARMS, Monday, 28 November 2005 17:22 (nineteen years ago)

glad it was fun! ours was ace too, and quite successful for a first-ever effort. thanks to gareth and andrew f for putting in an appearance, hope you enjoyed it...we lost money, but hey, that was to be expected! back in february i think - new venue, new theme, new danger...

How the fuck? Of all the threads on all the ILX, Gella has to sully mine. What's the deal with this, do any moderators know how he/she/it found this thread and why oh why are they bullying us so?

Affectian (Affectian), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 21:03 (nineteen years ago)

I'd really like to go to this, I love Manchester. I think I should be bribed with mp3s I haven't heard from the playlist, everything there I've heard is staggeringly good (Maps! That Tipsy remix!)

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 22:29 (nineteen years ago)

Gravel, come along! You can find a bunch of mp3s on our msg board - just request the ones you fancy. We're back in late January and hopefully a bunch of ILXors will be coming along too so come then! (also revive the Manchester thread the next time you're in Manchester and we'll let you know what's good and going in town).

Affectian (Affectian), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 22:03 (nineteen years ago)

how's it going for you guys?

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 22:09 (nineteen years ago)

I'll try and make the next one, I promise! When is it?

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 22:14 (nineteen years ago)

Gravel, next one is Friday 27th January, I'll stick you on the mailing list (if that's ok) so you'll get an email about a week beforehand.

Ronan, it's going really well. Great turnout every time (increased each time as word spreads), people have even been nicking our posters from shops to put on their walls, getting a bunch of great press (a little mention in the Guardian Guide the other week) and we've some smart plans for the upcoming year. I know it's a bit superficial and shallow but I *love* the way our crowd look and dress: http://www.clubclique.co.uk/gallery9.htm (new photo gallery)

Also, here's a preview by one of my favourite Manchester writers: http://www.manchesteronline.co.uk/entertainment/clubs/s/185/185784_review_club_clique.html

Club Clique

Gary Ryan

It's amazing how the word 'pop' is treated with disdain - filed somewhere next to 'paedophile', 'fisting', or 'Jeremy Paxman' in recoil-value. Club Clique is giving back to pop the respect it rightly deserves. Held on the last Friday of every month in the cavernous Joshua Brookes' basement, it creams together students, glamorous girlies and beautiful gayboys that want to dance to the crackling fizz and sparkle of the LCD Soundsystem, Pet Shop Boys, Annie, Ladytron and prance-maven Tiga.

"It's an alternative pop night for the cool kids who aren't into The Libertines and leather jackets," explains promoter/DJ Damien Johnstone aka DJ Pisces, who co-runs the night with Niche Ian. The Dionysian-pop duo met at the final Club Suicide, bonding over music and their love of Paul Morley. "We started to think well, maybe there are other people in this city who think like we do," says Johnstone.

A night that's equally as passionate about the Tiefschwarz mix of Fischerspooner's ‘Kick In The Teeth’ as it is about the maligned, dead-eyed doyenne of digital disco, Rachel Stevens, Club Clique launched in summer.

"People instantly got it," beams Johnstone. "They were coming with requests for The Knife, as opposed to things like Beyonce.

"It's funny," he notes, "because a friend of ours passed us a copy of Soulwax's ‘Funky Town’, and remarked, ‘That's such a Clique record’. And that's before we'd even DJ-ed a note. That's when we knew we were onto something."

With an enviable atmosphere like a house party, this is a place where indie-snobbery should be left with the coat-check.

Friday night sees Clique's last hurrah before the New Year, so expect to hear their current favourites Franz Ferdinand's 'The Fallen (Justice remix)', Goldfrapp, Sheffield's lost synthers Baxendale and 'In The Flesh (Sight And Sound Version)', by Nana Matronic herself, Debbie Harry.

"There does seem to be a scene arising out of nights like ours, and Tramp and Invest In Property," notes Johnstone. "Not in terms of playlists, but aesthetic. We get a massive amount of students in; a substantial number who shop in Afflecks. What's great is that it's a night people are making an effort to dress up and look interesting for."

Eclectic sounds, and a love of Rimmel rawkers Girls Aloud means there's only one thing left to say: ‘Last one to the dancefloor is Nicola Roberts!’

Affectian (Affectian), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 23:39 (nineteen years ago)

Ian, will you mind a guest set mostly composed of Sugababes songs?

in reply to ronan yeah it's got really really ace of late.
we were rammed (200 plus) at the last one and then, despite what we imagined might be a quieter time as we take a month off, two nice pieces of press in METRO and The Guide. Word appears to be getting round!

Roll on 2006 we can't wait you know, and come along Ronan,
Gravel et al! Bring your gangs!
We're on from 9.30 til 3 so we can all go crackers into the wee hours.

Affectian (Affectian), Monday, 2 January 2006 18:05 (nineteen years ago)

website of Ronan's clubnight = http://www.backlash.ie/

btw, yr club looks great; I rilly wish NZ had the population density to have the, uh, subcultural critical mass to pull one of these off w/more than, say, ten people (maybe) wanting to come.

But for you London-livers come down to Bigsexyland (http://www.bigsexyland.co.uk) on the 18th Feb at the Albany, 240 Great Portland Street, as Piscesboy and myself will be guest DJing that night. You couldn't have picked a better date for this as I will be very, very up for getting drunk and dancing that night. Although you are clashing with Tiga at The End :(

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 20 January 2006 12:54 (nineteen years ago)

Also, what time are you starting and finishing and all that?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 20 January 2006 13:53 (nineteen years ago)

Aright Matt, that's your birthday night isn't it? Not sure what time we're on and finishing, I think we might be doing about 10pm til 1230 or so but I'll put the details on here when I find out. (and huuuuge huge huge thanks for the Wigwam on the other thread too!)

Affectian (Affectian), Friday, 20 January 2006 20:49 (nineteen years ago)

Yep, indeed. Don't suppose you mind if I hijack the event and try and bring about 40 people along do you? Most of London ILX will hopefully be there. We'll probably be drinking in the pub upstairs before so come over and say hello.

(Although being cheeky here, hearing the JLC remix of Lose Control or the Rex The Dog mix of Drop The Pressure would be very nice)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Saturday, 21 January 2006 13:47 (nineteen years ago)

Yep, indeed. Don't suppose you mind if I hijack the event and try and bring about 40 people along do you?

DEFINITELY DO THIS!! Really, that'd be superb. We'll bring those tracks along with us and feel free to suggest any more too.

Affectian (Affectian), Saturday, 21 January 2006 14:04 (nineteen years ago)

Oh I realised I never answered above, yeah our website is www.backlash.ie

It's a similar idea to your own club, tho we sort of went from being electropop plus everything else to electrohouse, we have kind of a crazy young crowd that like to do drugs so it tends to be sort of mad.

We've had a good few guests at this stage, the Optimo guys twice, Steve Kotie from Chicken Lips/Bear Enterainment, Anu from the Freeform Five, oh yeah and we somehow got Jacques Lu Cont to play in our 220 capacity club, I'd say literally JUST BEFORE he exploded again and got massively popular. We've done a good few nights sort of for other promoters too for acts we'd never afford ourselves like Blackstrobe and Tiefschwarz.

This Thursday we have Damien Lazarus and we also have started doing a monthly residency in one room of a bigger club, where we book a live act and DJ after, so next Saturday we have Nathan Fake playing at that.

So yeah it's all good.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 21 January 2006 14:09 (nineteen years ago)

yes! that does sound good. there's lots of talk about nathan fake at the minute.

well if anyone's in manchester (or nearby) grab yourselves a copy of the free METRO today and see m'self and Affectian / Niche Ian blethering on in their Clique feature, like our lives depend on it (which they do to an extent). It describes our crowd as 'loyal dressed-up and well meaning' - we can't argue!

Come on down and say hello tomorrow night kids! You'll be so very welcome.

damien j (pisces), Thursday, 26 January 2006 11:45 (nineteen years ago)

Bit late but in case there any Mancunians reading wondering what to do tonight then come! to! Clique!

http://www.clubclique.co.uk/gallery_images/jan06_pix_optimised/1.jpg

Last Clique was super dooper, we ended up locking the doors just after midnight. But before I blabber on about the next one (Feb 24th) Piscesboy and myself are DJing in Londontown tomorrow at http://www.bigsexyland.co.uk/

Here's the blurb for that one:

BSL takes place on the third Saturday of every month at Low (the new name for downstairs at the Albany).

The Albany is at 240 Great Portland Street. You can’t miss it from Great Portland Street tube, or you can get off at Oxford Circus and walk north. Click on FIND US for more information.

Entry to BSL is £3 before 11pm and £5 after. We're open from 8:30pm to 2am.

We'll be on early, from half eight so get down early if you can but no biggie if not, we'll be sticking around til the end. Rumour has it that Barima and Stevem and j0e and other fabulous ilx slebs will be making an appearance! Wut woo! And hey Matt DC, hope you can still make it along, come over and say hi when you get in.

Affectian (Affectian), Friday, 17 February 2006 16:19 (nineteen years ago)

should be there for 7.30/8. wut woo indeed.

I'll be there too! Hurrah. I expect large fun (to make up for the fact that all my friends are off having fun without me tonight, blub).

JimD (JimD), Friday, 17 February 2006 20:40 (nineteen years ago)

I won't stay out too late but will be rocking y'all.

Hal! Jordan! HAL! JORDAN! (Barima), Friday, 17 February 2006 21:37 (nineteen years ago)

I will definitely be there, until such time as I fall over myself. We'll be sitting upstairs from 7.30ish - it should be fairly obvious who we are so come over and say hello.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 17 February 2006 23:42 (nineteen years ago)

i shall also be there, woo-hah...

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Saturday, 18 February 2006 17:02 (nineteen years ago)

Arr, tonight was ace! Things I liked: 1) accidentally drinking cider which turned out to be very nice. 2) once in a lifetime and bizarre love triangle back to back! 3) seeing you all for the first time in AGES. 4) gareth admitting he doesn't have a crush on my cute friend any more, only for me to (BLAM!) develop a crush on his cute friend instead.

i have no memories of last night from just before leaving my house until 8 this morning (well, i remember talking to barima and charlie, and i remember being confused at which coat i'd brought, but nothing else)...sorry if i said or did anything terrible! i'm paying the price today, for sure.

colette (a2lette), Sunday, 19 February 2006 15:55 (nineteen years ago)

So you don't remember apologising repeatedly for forgetting my scarf, while I was standing there holding the scarf you'd just given back to me?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 19 February 2006 16:40 (nineteen years ago)

haha!

toby (tsg20), Sunday, 19 February 2006 16:51 (nineteen years ago)

haha, colette, i was leaving the albany around the time you got there, and you could barely stand up! it was funny, though, and you did look fabulous.

The Lex (The Lex), Sunday, 19 February 2006 19:30 (nineteen years ago)

Also - Charlie, email me about that exciting stuff we discussed last night.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 19 February 2006 20:10 (nineteen years ago)

It sounds like you had a lovely time! Sorry I missed it.

suzy (suzy), Sunday, 19 February 2006 22:12 (nineteen years ago)

Glad to see a bunch of you - I'm glad I lasted as long as I did and I was still on enough form for the church reading later that morning, which everyone loved. The service included a christening and the baby was so quiet I figure my booming "voice of God" must have hypnotised him into docility.

Ed, what's your Flickr address?

Ed (dali), Monday, 20 February 2006 21:45 (nineteen years ago)

Saturday was great, really good to meet you all. Big hellos to Barima, Stevem, Matt DC, Gareth, Ed, j0e, JimD (didn't know you were there Charlie, I would have liked to have said hi too (same goes to The Lex and Colette)) and everyone else. We brought a big Manchester contingent down with us too so all those who are coming up to Clique on Friday might recognise a few there too. Check the Bigsexyland website in a couple of days for the photos too, I'm pretty sure some of the ILX massive are on them. Don't know if any of you know the BSL DJs already but they're a couple of the nicest smartest guys around - we'll definitely be heading back down there soon.

Affectian (Affectian), Monday, 20 February 2006 21:50 (nineteen years ago)

..and lest we forget the reason why we were all there, here's a fantastic article about pop by Peter Robinson from the current issue of Word magazine:

Affectian (Affectian), Monday, 20 February 2006 21:54 (nineteen years ago)

Holla at the Manc crew indeed. Virgin haven't sent my tickets and they've got till Weds before I go loco and drop the pressure.

Thanks Ed, that's some quality flicks there. My mate Hugh's in one of them, wearing a pink polo and looking at you like you stole his money.

Hal! Jordan! HAL! JORDAN! (Barima), Monday, 20 February 2006 22:04 (nineteen years ago)

PS. Stevem and Barima are, of course, DJing at Clique this Friday so you've got time to book a Megabus ticket or whatnot. It's gonna be great. Here's this month's spamblurb:

///////////////////////////////////////////
"I put up with all the scenes
And this is one scene
That's going to be played my way"
///////////////////////////////////////////

Despite the sub-zero temperature and the Big Brother finale, the
Clique kids made it a sell-out lock-out hit last time! Thanks to all
of you for making Manchester as beautiful as it was born to be. See
the January photo gallery for proof:
http://www.clubclique.co.uk/gallery11.htm

This month we are thrilled to announce our first non-local DJ guests,
Base58.com's DJ Sven and DJ Barima. Friends of Clique since Day One,
they'll be wowing all with their super-danze pop slickness and digital
sound trickery.

Apologies to all the people who emailed saying they couldn't get in
last month. We can only advise that you arrive as early as you can to
avoid being locked out on the streets of Manchester.

And if you haven't been yet, see what the North's finest writers have
been saying about Clique: http://www.clubclique.co.uk/press.htm

As ever, we've been raiding the vaults and hunting down the newest
dancefloor stormers. We'll be rubbing up the Digital Dance-pop till it
bursts and here's February's top 11:

Tiga - Far From Home (Digitalism Remix)

one month passes...
Ooops, forgot to revive this last Friday but not to worry as it was a fantastic night, one of the best yet. February was a bit emptier than usual, probably due to the arctic temperatures outside keeping people away. Annoying as Stevem and Barima did a superb set, one of the best yet. But March was back on form and S&B we hope you can come back later in the year for another turn on the decks.

Judging by the number of air-punches, the best-received song last Friday was Stevem's very own Killers vs Bowie bootleg. I don't know if he wants the track floating about the internet so I'll hold off from posting it on here but it's brilliant. And this went down a storm too.

Affectian (Affectian), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 21:32 (nineteen years ago)

it's a goddam conspiracy i tells ya

put the Killers/Bowie boot up by all means - i'm just too lazy to have got round to putting it on base58 myself (but will do along with another couple of newish ones). cheers.

three weeks pass...
Tonight! Really excited about this one as we're NME's club of the week and Attitude magazine are heading down to do a full page feature on us. This time round we've got Simon Price guest DJing and all signs point toward it being amazing! Here's this month's blurb:

week's NME! Check it out here.

So come one, come all for our first glammed-up party of the

i still have no idea who Price is, and this seems like a good thing. hope it's good tho.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Friday, 28 April 2006 10:01 (nineteen years ago)

wow nme, good stuff.

we are moving venue and had a huge party last night, words can't describe. think I have photos of us all stage diving at the end, it's hilarious.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 28 April 2006 10:59 (nineteen years ago)

Cheers Ronan. I saw the footage of you DJing at your club and it looks great, it's on my list of 'things to go to when I've got enough $$$'.

Stevem, ah Simon's great. He's arguably most known for the old Manics stuff in the 90s but these days he's a great pop DJ, runs Stay Beautiful and a new Studio 54-style night in London. Lovely guy, great writer and has fantastic hair.

That NME piece is a bit wrong, in that they chose some of the crummiest pictures from the galleries and quoted our photo/design girl Melissa (some of you may have seen her running about taking photos at BigSexyLand the other month) as coming out with all the quotes. Which she didn't and she's slightly peeved about that. But yes, we're very pleased to be in there. I'm really looking forward to the Attitude piece though as that's guaranteed to look stunning.

Affectian (Affectian), Friday, 28 April 2006 12:26 (nineteen years ago)

Friday was fantastic. We had to ask the bouncers to shut the doors after midnight because it was crazybusy, Simon Price played 'Male Stripper', Stevem's Killers/Bowie boot slayed them and all in all it was just ace. This is the point where it feels like things are really taking off and if you've not already checked it out (or even if you have!) I urge you to come on up to Manchester on the 26th May - email me on club.clique@gmail.com and I'll tell you where's good to go to beforehand.

Affectian (Affectian), Thursday, 4 May 2006 16:05 (nineteen years ago)

seconded. heckfuckingfire.

yeah stevem's killers/bowie boot went down so well with our guest DJ. he stopped dancing to it to come rave about it loudly in my ear, then went back dancing to it again.

pisces (piscesx), Friday, 5 May 2006 11:29 (nineteen years ago)

download the shoddy mash-up in question plus a few others at base58.com now. all very encouraging as it could be a bit better frankly but these things don't always seem worth spending that much time on. more to come though, of course.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Friday, 5 May 2006 11:44 (nineteen years ago)

Mr Jones, text me if you're going to the star & garter.
cheers.

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Friday, 5 May 2006 13:50 (nineteen years ago)

Did the crowd go particularly mental at the pull-back at 1:30 on that bootleg? I suspect I would have.

caek (caek), Friday, 5 May 2006 14:07 (nineteen years ago)

yeah the pull back is my fave bit.

pisces (piscesx), Thursday, 29 June 2006 18:08 (nineteen years ago)

I caught Simon Price at 333 2 weeks back. I took pleasure in telling him the Bowie/Killers bootleg he played belonged to my "DJ partner", Sven, not the thieving scally Clique duo ;-).

Headspin (Barima), Thursday, 29 June 2006 19:32 (nineteen years ago)

hey we told him that! plenty times! the scally clique duo are nothing if not honourable..

meanwhile, any interested ilxors can download a clip of the lovely gene serene's awesome 'i can do anything' here.

Affectian (Affectian), Thursday, 29 June 2006 20:51 (nineteen years ago)

Properly last minute this, but the adorable and BONKERS Gene Serene is doing a live set at my chum Stewart's night in London tonight. It's at a place called Catch and you'll find more info here: http://www.meatraffle.co.uk/

So it's Clique time again! We celebrated our birthday last month with another chaotic sell-out night down in the basement, tonight's will be the last of the no-guest-dj parties before we return in September with a CLIENT dj set on the 29th.

The galleries of the first year are here:

pisces (piscesx), Friday, 25 August 2006 09:45 (nineteen years ago)

is this Clique every Friday? or just once a month?

Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 25 August 2006 12:29 (nineteen years ago)

Hey Ste, it's the last Friday of every month - I think you're one of the few Manc-related ilxors not to come along, you should try and make it tonight! Good to meet 'yer mam!' there last month too.

And *taps glass with fork* following a fucking brilliant first year I'd just like to give big thanks to ilx for indirectly bringing this about, and even bigger thanks to the handful of ilxors who had a massive influence on us throughout this. We'll be sticking a chunk of Clique money into this ilx server fund in the next few days by way of thanks. And the best thing is, from my completely unbiased viewpoint those gushing press quotes don't even come close...

Affectian (Affectian), Friday, 25 August 2006 12:57 (nineteen years ago)

i think it's just what me and my 'dancing' buddy are looking for, we're a bit stuck for decent venues with music we like out in Warrington (ie none)

Can't make it tonight, but am going to talk to my mate about this tomorrow so hopefully fingers crossed i can drag her along to the next one. Cheers!

Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 25 August 2006 13:24 (nineteen years ago)

Warrington, that's where Pisces up there hails from. I wonder if you know any of the same people.

Yeah next month should be a biggie, email us on club.clique@gmail.com nearer the time and we'll tell you more, see you next month!

You still up for it Ste? Without sounding like the usual bullshitty promoter DO try to get there early as we're expecting to get rammed soon. We've got Emily Strange from Client DJing who by all accounts is lovely, and here she is:
