Why is this is even a question? ;) So many great moments!! My favourite probably the one that starts of as Neil's Dallas dream when he hears Vivian shout "SHUT UP YOU BASTARDS!!!". He wakes up to see a hung-over Vivian on Sunday morning banging his head against the wall shouting "SHUT UP YOU BASTARDS!!" at the churchbells outside.

I remember Orbital of all bands talking about how Rising Damp lasts while The Young Ones doesn't. Interesting comparison! Though if we're talking L. Rossiter, Reg Perrin all the way. Great! Super!

Anyway, Young Ones = classic. In America, the episodes were picked up by MTV in the mid-eighties long after the second season was finished and run fairly constantly, largely because of the musical content. This turned out to be a blessing, in that it was one heck of a way to be exposed to a variety of bands otherwise getting no airplay. I mean, learning who the hell Motorhead was -- very genius! The Damned were the key find for me, I went, "The hell?" and went out and bought the just-released Light at the End of the Tunnel collection, and thus began my lurv for punk rock and various related things, oh yes.

I have the episodes on tape and every so often give them a viewing. Obviously stuff of its time and place, but still, so many of the one- liners are just wonderful.

No points for helping give Hale and Pace a break, though. Idiots.

Now the Goodies, they were odd...sort of.

Possibly fair comment, but the way I feel about Mayall = the way some folks feel about David Bowie, i.e. it doesn't matter how much embarrassing cack he puts his name to, he's still Rik Mayall, and therefore *potentially* the funniest man on Earth. David Bowie *is* the funniest man on Earth, meanwhile.

From that era, the stuff that's really lasted = Comic Strip Presents (especially the first two series). But perhaps that's just the exclusive this-is-our-thing thing (few saw first airing of YO in late '82, but everyone and their mother [though certainly not *my* mother] was a fan by '85; CS passed the schoolyard masses by). I love it, of course, tho it sometimes feels a little dated nowdays. But I think thats only because I have been able to consistently watch it whenever I liked (having been smart enough to VHS tape the whole 2 series when it was first on TV in the 80s), and now I have it on DVD. I kind of know it all off by heart, which is a good and terrible thing ;)

I think I prefer the Goodies! But the Goodies are very special to any australian of my age - I think even more so than in the UK.

Yes, I've read Tim Brooke Taylor comment more than once at how suprised they were at how popular the Goodies was in Australia. Here, it was shown and repeated for many years in the 80s - a 6pm staple along with Roger Ramjet, Kenny Everett and Dr Who. Its a big part of the childhood of Aussies my age. I was massively pleased when they finally did some DVD releases, though dispointed so little has come out on DVD.

Indeed. I hear tell they even taped over some original material because the BBC was so cash-strapped they had to re-use video tape? Seems bizarre, dont know if it is true. I do know there are legendary "missing" Goodies and Python things floating around. I saw an amazing webpage once about a deleted Python FLying Circus scene, one of Gilliams animation segues, in which a soldier is trying to communicate on a phone line and the line spans out to show it is supported by a load of christs-on-crosses as telephone poles. Then a (rather alarmingly jewish-looking) Devil pops up and says "be quiet!" or something. It was cut from the show, I guess I can understand why.

I watched through this just recently and it is only really the beginning of the second series that is excellent. The first series isn't very tight and jokes are sometimes far between (Alexei sayle's bits often the highlights) By halfway through the second series they seem to be bored with it although there are still some really good bits.
