Ultra Fucking Classic. There are so many great lines..."at one stage, she even took her BRA off!"

Damian, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Why is this is even a question? ;) So many great moments!! My favourite probably the one that starts of as Neil's Dallas dream when he hears Vivian shout "SHUT UP YOU BASTARDS!!!". He wakes up to see a hung-over Vivian on Sunday morning banging his head against the wall shouting "SHUT UP YOU BASTARDS!!" at the churchbells outside.

Also: "Trevor's tea!"

and the way Rick doesn't actually say 'bra' but 'bwwroaahh". ;)

Omar, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

'The old trick,eh?EAT the telly before I get the chance to nick you!'

Damian, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the one where they go on University Challenge against Footlights College, Oxbridge ("rah rah rah! we're going to smash the oiks!") and Emma Thompson says "Ive got a Porsche" and Vyvyan is fiddling with the mic and the voice says "Vyvyan, Scumbag" and he says "What?". oh i laughed till i cried. still, i was only 10 :)

katie, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Classick all the way! In what episode did Neneh Cherry appear? Can't remember. My fave episode was the one with the rats. Gotta check if it's out on dee-vee-dee.

"And you fell for it, like the fascist you are".

Neneh Cherry was in Rip, Rig and Panic, featured in one episode. God I'm old.

Tag, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"anyway, Mary decided not to go to the party..... for the obvious reasons"

at the time it was a downright classic, if I watched it again now I'd possibly think less so.

chris, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Neil, your bedroom's on fire!"

AP, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Also for me the introduction to the two-finger salute. Esp. the double 2-fingers Viv does whilst taunting Rick: "Missed me Vuuuhhhrrginnnn!".

Omar, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Open up it's the piiigs" is the only one I can remember cos that's all I heard at school for the next two months. I wasn't allowed to watch it at the time cos I were too young/innocent, tho everyone else my age was watching it. But classic anyhoo.

Steve.n., Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Mark C, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Who of the YO crew = still funny? Mayall: no. Edmondson: no. Sayle: no. The short one: never was. The hippie: never was.

Only still-funny line: Emma Thompson (of all otherwise talentgless ppl) in the University Challenge spoof: "I've got a porsche".

Still-useful phrase: "And you fell for it, like the FASCISTS you are."

mark s, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

My fave bit is still the yoof show 'Nosin' Around'. Was Janet Street Porter watching when she was dreaming of Rapido...or what?

Also Dawn French dressed up as the Devil: "she's talking about PERIOD PAINS!"

suzy, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Neil: You all really hate me, don't you?

Rik: Yes, when we can remember your name, um, thingamajig.

Prude, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Also, Boomshanka: May the seed of your loins be fruitful in the belly of your womaaaaaan.

Prude, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No, Suzy, she was watching it when she dreamt up Network 7 ;) (have we done N7 C/D/Changed-the-face-of-broadcasting-as-we-know-it yet?). I was another too young and innocent to watch it first time around (or rather mother wouldn't let me, due to it being ROOD and STOOPID), and it hasn't really stood the test of time has it? vyvian getting his head cut off by the train, and motorhead playing ace of spades are the best bits prolly...

CarsmileSteve, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Classic the first 20 times, but wearing a bit thin now. I was in love with Rick.

FITE: The Young Ones vs The Goodies

toraneko, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I remember Orbital of all bands talking about how Rising Damp lasts while The Young Ones doesn't. Interesting comparison! Though if we're talking L. Rossiter, Reg Perrin all the way. Great! Super!

Anyway, Young Ones = classic. In America, the episodes were picked up by MTV in the mid-eighties long after the second season was finished and run fairly constantly, largely because of the musical content. This turned out to be a blessing, in that it was one heck of a way to be exposed to a variety of bands otherwise getting no airplay. I mean, learning who the hell Motorhead was -- very genius! The Damned were the key find for me, I went, "The hell?" and went out and bought the just-released Light at the End of the Tunnel collection, and thus began my lurv for punk rock and various related things, oh yes.

I have the episodes on tape and every so often give them a viewing. Obviously stuff of its time and place, but still, so many of the one- liners are just wonderful.

"You guys *never* listen to me! I might as well be a Leonard Cohen record!"

No points for helping give Hale and Pace a break, though. Idiots.

Now the Goodies, they were odd...sort of.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Young Ones = bestest. "You don't have a sister Rik, you're the classic example of an only-child"

DG, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Kate and I are sitting here getting pished on sake.

Rik: "I'm going to write my local councilman."

Mike: "You can't, you're an anarchist."

Rik: "All right then, I'll write to the lead singer of Echo and the Bunnymen. Dear Mister Echo..."

Also: (to Rik) '"Is that pronounced with a silent P?"

suzy, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Kate and I are sitting here getting pished on sake.

No fair -- share! Once again I dream for teleport devices...

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Neil, dressed as cop, crashes into a room and destroys a phonograph... he looks down and noticed what's on the turntable... "Oh no, Steve Hillage!"

Sean, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Abba? Abba? Swedish? I knew them when they were a Lancashire clog- dancing trio! Arthur, Betty, Boris and Angela!

electric sound of jim, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Who of the YO crew = still funny? Mayall: no. Edmondson: no. Sayle: no. The short one: never was. The hippie: never was."

Possibly fair comment, but the way I feel about Mayall = the way some folks feel about David Bowie, i.e. it doesn't matter how much embarrassing cack he puts his name to, he's still Rik Mayall, and therefore *potentially* the funniest man on Earth. David Bowie *is* the funniest man on Earth, meanwhile.

From that era, the stuff that's really lasted = Comic Strip Presents (especially the first two series). But perhaps that's just the exclusive this-is-our-thing thing (few saw first airing of YO in late '82, but everyone and their mother [though certainly not *my* mother] was a fan by '85; CS passed the schoolyard masses by). Keith Allen's greatest forty-five minutes: "Geno: Full Story and Pics".

i watched some of the first series on DVD recently and gawd it's mostly terrible (the timing is so woeful yet they all seem strangely confident). the second one is far better and still makes me chuckle - you get it wrong i kick your head een

Ian Riese-Moraine: a casualty of social estrangement. (Eastern Mantra), Friday, 26 August 2005 20:40 (nineteen years ago)

I love it, of course, tho it sometimes feels a little dated nowdays. But I think thats only because I have been able to consistently watch it whenever I liked (having been smart enough to VHS tape the whole 2 series when it was first on TV in the 80s), and now I have it on DVD. I kind of know it all off by heart, which is a good and terrible thing ;)

I think I prefer the Goodies! But the Goodies are very special to any australian of my age - I think even more so than in the UK.

Everyone called me neil in high school *grump*.

Trayce (trayce), Saturday, 27 August 2005 03:54 (nineteen years ago)

The Goodies aren't very well known at all now in the UK, because they've hardly ever been repeated.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Saturday, 27 August 2005 07:00 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, I've read Tim Brooke Taylor comment more than once at how suprised they were at how popular the Goodies was in Australia. Here, it was shown and repeated for many years in the 80s - a 6pm staple along with Roger Ramjet, Kenny Everett and Dr Who. Its a big part of the childhood of Aussies my age. I was massively pleased when they finally did some DVD releases, though dispointed so little has come out on DVD.

Trayce (trayce), Saturday, 27 August 2005 07:31 (nineteen years ago)

I think The Goodies is one of the programmes that suffered badly from the BBC deletion policy.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Saturday, 27 August 2005 08:14 (nineteen years ago)

Indeed. I hear tell they even taped over some original material because the BBC was so cash-strapped they had to re-use video tape? Seems bizarre, dont know if it is true. I do know there are legendary "missing" Goodies and Python things floating around. I saw an amazing webpage once about a deleted Python FLying Circus scene, one of Gilliams animation segues, in which a soldier is trying to communicate on a phone line and the line spans out to show it is supported by a load of christs-on-crosses as telephone poles. Then a (rather alarmingly jewish-looking) Devil pops up and says "be quiet!" or something. It was cut from the show, I guess I can understand why.

Trayce (trayce), Saturday, 27 August 2005 08:23 (nineteen years ago)

The Goodies is complete, except for a couple of episodes that are only B&W. Although there was a tantalising rumour that TBT himself has those episodes in colour - I believe he showed part of one at an Australian Goodies convention in the past couple of years.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Saturday, 27 August 2005 08:55 (nineteen years ago)

He did! And, if its "come dancing" yr thinking of, I do believe there is a colour version of it. The DVD I have has it in B&W but I have heard the UK DVD had a colour version (tho I havent seen it, nor been sure thats a true story).

Trayce (trayce), Saturday, 27 August 2005 08:57 (nineteen years ago)

Man I am such a Goodies nerd.

Trayce (trayce), Saturday, 27 August 2005 08:58 (nineteen years ago)

The BBC Treasure Hunt page has all the details.

The only thing technically missing is the non-Montreaux cut of Kitten Kong, but 'missing' is stretching the point since it was never broadcast and only marginally edited.

25 years. dvd.

i can remember them getting their first video...

koogs, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 08:30 (seventeen years ago)

I watched through this just recently and it is only really the beginning of the second series that is excellent. The first series isn't very tight and jokes are sometimes far between (Alexei sayle's bits often the highlights) By halfway through the second series they seem to be bored with it although there are still some really good bits.

Ed, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 09:08 (seventeen years ago)
