If you guys don't know, my current user name is a tribute to my favorite tv host (besides Miguel from BUSCANDO AMOR. the local Mexican Blind Date ripoff.), Huell Howser. he is this jolly man with a beergut and a feminine southern accent. he takes you around to cool places in California. sometimes he'll take you to some long lost roadside attraction. other times he just hang out in a donut shop in Arleta and bother the patrons and employees all day with his naive interviewing style and "duh" kind of wide-eyed-im-a-little-boy-wow-this-is-so-excicing-being-in-a-donut-shop-in-Arleta!!
style of hosting. the dood is ALWAYS REALLY excited to look at the dumbest shit.

i never know which show im watching because motherfuker has SEVEN SHOWS that he hosts/produces which must make him some sort of insane autistic genius or something!!!!!! He has this one show called "ROAD TRIP WITH HUELL HOWSER" where he just gets in his car with one camera man and just drive with no paticular destination in mind.

KCET (Los Angeles public television) just launched a site thats basically a map of la with little red dots and if you click on a red dot an old video of Huell showing you something cool in LA pops up!

totally great, anyone who's heard him can do an HH impression and that means he's awesome. I like how he listens way too good, letting people blather on for like 10 minutes about their little bike riding club or whatever. He wades into events as if he has no idea why he's there really but dammit he's gonna be enthusiastic about it, sounds like I'm slagging him but it's a really refreshing show in a lot of ways.

I love Huell Howser! Just the other night I watched an old greatest hits sort of clip show that he had on. He was showing stuff from there early '80s (Huell Howser's Video Diary) and he interviewed the inventor of the ant farm, went to the bridge to nowhere, reunited an elderly elephant trainer with the elephant he hadn't seen for 20 years, and other such adventures. It was great! In some of the clips he was wearing a suit which looked strange because you couldn't see his biceps.

This is funny you said this, Deano. I just read an old Los Angeles Magazine article about him. Alot of his past coworkers say that he's the most difficult person to ever work with. Thats why he does alot of his shows on his own. The article paints him as this extremely tortured man with no friends and no love life. He spends alot of time getting drunk at the Tiki Ti apparently.

I was kind of hoping that he was a really mean and horrible person and that his on camera antics were just acting. But yeah, I can definitely see how he could be neurotic and miserable. It adds a sad quality to his show to think about that. Still, I will always remember him as the man who was just really happy to be wherever he was.

That is SO not true! He is as genuinely simple and charming off camera as he when shooting. No friends? He has an entourage, and several good friends always near by. The entire population of the entire Palm Springs and surrounding areas; (and anyone in the world, for that matter who recognizes him), stops to chat with him and say hello. And unless he is really in a rush (which he will tell you if the case), he WILL stop and chat and talk to you EXACTLY in the same way he does as “portrayed” on TV. All this in spite of the fact he's bombarded by fans constantly.

I caught a hilarious faux-documentary on pbs based on Sandow Birk's 'in smog and thunder' (a series of paintings of the imaginary 'war of the californias') and towards the end HUELL HOWSER comes in from out of nowhere and does one of his 'golly gee' interviews at some fake monument to the war. My absolute favorite California's Gold moment: Huell goes to the southwesternmost point in the state, which happens to be a strip of Imperial Beach that buts up against the U.S.-Mexico border fence that extends out into the Pacific. Accompanied by a park ranger, Huell walks out into the tide with the intention of planting a tiny American flag in the most southwesterly point of American terrain he possibly can.

When the park ranger objects to Huell's planting it on wet beach sand, Huell is seemingly too excited to take heed. He plants it where he's had his eyes fixed on and then steps back to enjoy his little monument.

Moments later it is engulfed in a wave and Huell cries "Oh no! My flag!"

My favorite episode of any of Huell's shows is when he gets a letter from some guy in La Crescenta who had a "big weird rock" in his backyard for years but always wondered what it was (the guy thought it was a meteorite). Anyway, Huell takes the rock to JPL and, since he's Huell, gets the scientists in the geology lab to run every test they have to figure out what the rock was (turns out it was something like sandstone).

But like I said, since he's Huell he makes it into the most fascinating rock ever.

One of my favorites was a show where he didn't have anything planned so he just sort of went to Echo Park and started to wander around the park and talk to random strangers.

Alot of his past coworkers say that he's the most difficult person to ever work with. Thats why he does alot of his shows on his own. The article paints him as this extremely tortured man with no friends and no love life. He spends alot of time getting drunk at the Tiki Ti apparently.

WOW i came to ile just to revive this thread, weird. anybody see him visit the Nethercutt museum in Sylmar today??(actually an update, guess he's been there 3 times over the years). It's got steampunk fire engines, a hangar full of old timey cars (including Constance Bennett's pimped out RR phantom, and a whole room full of fine crystal radiator caps!), and a whole wing full of gigantic automated orchestras and autoplayers from since the turn of the century with names that end with.

this place goes on the shortlist for FAP destinations or I'm boycotting Southern California.

i'll get on it. apparently there's two collections across the street from each other, the cooler one is reservation-only saturday-thursday i believe and the other one with just cars (with a private pullman 'palace' dining car in the back) is open to the public. They're both free i believe. The tour guide who showed him around on the older show was a really really cool posh Robert Wagner type dude, he had been there 30 years but retired now unfortunately. I'll help with the driving no problem, it's a bit of a haul from l.a. i think

I've been there, it's well worth going. In the non-reservation room they have what may be one of the oldest "jukeboxes" made. It consists of 15-20 metal disks, where you pick the one you want to hear and it comes out and is played in the manner of a music box - tines get plucked by coming to gaps in the disk. It was not operable when I was there, but the sign may have indicated that it is playable by visitors.

There's also a 30's Pierce-Arrow with a matching RV-type trailer. It's fucking beautiful.

It's about 25-30 minutes up the 210 from Pasadena.

Huell goes to the avocado farm was repeated on Saturday. Huell is under this tree looking at this picker who is wearing a "Got Pot?" shirt. He climbs down from the ladder and you can see the marijuana leaf on the front of his shirt in plain view and Huell just stands there amazed at the avocado. It was great. I don't know how they missed it since they edit that stuff for classroom viewing.

yesterday at the getty center's restaurant for my gf's uncle's birthday, huell howser was sitting two tables away drinking COSMOPOLITANS. after he was finished he walked over to our table and stopped and talked to us. he asked what was going on and when told it was the uncle's b-day he said, "wah, ah usually spend mah birthdays curled up in bed in the fetal position! ha ha ha!" and made small talk for another couple of minutes before wandering off with his companions for a tour of the center garden.
