Stop hiding! Please come and say hello to us.

C J (C J), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 09:31 (twenty years ago)

We're quite nice, really :)

C J (C J), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 09:32 (twenty years ago)

I've been a lurker for years. i've probably been lurking for longer than some of the regular posters have been posting...since 2002 or so, probably. It's weirdly compelling, like watching some sort of 24 hour reality programme. I know scary amounts of information about you lot, despite never having exchanged a single word.

I'm going to scuttle back into the shadows now.

lurker king, Wednesday, 3 August 2005 09:39 (twenty years ago)

And remember, I'm watching you.

lurker king, Wednesday, 3 August 2005 09:39 (twenty years ago)

that's the type of post that makes me want to return to lurkery again.

g-kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 09:40 (twenty years ago)

(xpost)

How is life at the Telegraph these days, then?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 09:41 (twenty years ago)

I bet lurker king isn't a real lurker.

Once real lurkers lose their posting virginity, they don't scuttle back to the shadows again.

C J (C J), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 09:43 (twenty years ago)

Oh no I know who this one is - he writes for the abovementioned newspaper.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 09:44 (twenty years ago)

Hello Lurkers! Weren't you a band?

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 09:45 (twenty years ago)

Unfortunately, Marcello, I'm very much unemployed at the moment, and have never been paid to write anything for anybody.

lurker king, Wednesday, 3 August 2005 09:47 (twenty years ago)

You're not the award-winning Daily Telegraph writer who I KNOW FOR A FACT LURKS ON ILX LIKE AN UNDERUSED POT OF GLUE then?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 09:49 (twenty years ago)

Alas no. Who did you think I was?

lurker king, Wednesday, 3 August 2005 09:50 (twenty years ago)

That's right! That's exactly right!

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 09:53 (twenty years ago)

I KNOW FOR A FACT LURKS ON ILX LIKE AN UNDERUSED POT OF GLUE

Lurks like an underused pot of glue? How bizarre.

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 09:54 (twenty years ago)

I am having difficulty deciphering your cryptic remarks Marcello.

lurker king, Wednesday, 3 August 2005 09:55 (twenty years ago)

If only you knew the truth...

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 09:56 (twenty years ago)

cor, this is getting exciting.

g-kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 09:57 (twenty years ago)

Hmm.

lurker king, Wednesday, 3 August 2005 09:58 (twenty years ago)

Fulham Fallout was undoubtedly the best Fulham-related record to be issued since "Y Viva El Fulham" by the losing 1975 FA Cup Final Squad.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 09:59 (twenty years ago)

ok I admit it Marcello, I lurk for you, to read and savour your sexy and erudite posts...mmmmm lurky lurky....

Mandy, Wednesday, 3 August 2005 10:00 (twenty years ago)

Yes, but if only you were...

(No lady has ever flirted with me on ILx. It is a depressing thought)

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 10:01 (twenty years ago)

rapidy heading from 'exciting' to 'demented', now...

g-kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 10:02 (twenty years ago)

Shadow, shadow, shadow, shadow

Best chorus ever.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 10:05 (twenty years ago)

This is about as demented as Paul Coia in KwikSave.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 10:06 (twenty years ago)

i think i've had boys flirt with me on ILX.

g-kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 10:06 (twenty years ago)

Seriously, I am not and never have been employed by the Telegraph. Actually, I try to avoid even reading it, because the political slant tends to sends me into unsightly paroxysms of liberal/europhile outrage.

lurker king, Wednesday, 3 August 2005 10:07 (twenty years ago)

They pay better than the Guardian though! And you don't have to sell them the rights to your writing either!

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 10:08 (twenty years ago)

do not say word. i lurk here. no one to know.

Sami Jheryllkanyga, Wednesday, 3 August 2005 10:12 (twenty years ago)

You secret is safe with me.

C J (C J), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 10:13 (twenty years ago)

I cross you off list CJ. It is not problem

Sami Jheryllkanyga, Wednesday, 3 August 2005 10:16 (twenty years ago)

Much appreciated, sami. I am the very soul of discretion. Trust me.

C J (C J), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 10:20 (twenty years ago)

since 2002 or so, probably.

ROFL! I have been here since 2001. MOFO. ;-)

I don't think I could ever post. I realize most of my remarks are actually soliloquys, but I can't help it, I NEED TO TALK.

nathalie sans denouement (stevie nixed), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 10:21 (twenty years ago)

i'll keep your secret too, s4m1. see, i even google-proofed you. recognise.

also, i might add that i started posting properly after a 'one-off' posting on a lurker thread like this.

g-kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 10:23 (twenty years ago)

That's it, see. Post once, and you're hooked.

C J (C J), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 10:25 (twenty years ago)

i'm not!

lurker king, Wednesday, 3 August 2005 10:26 (twenty years ago)

i gave up for a while though!

xpost (hush, you)

g-kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 10:27 (twenty years ago)

I post once then go back to lurking then post one more time then lurk then post again then lurk. I can never actually stay on a thread long enough to carry on a conversation. Like right now. I'm going off for dinner.

Later! (maybe...)

Roz (Roz), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 10:28 (twenty years ago)

That's pretty much what I do too.

(The post then lurk thing, that is. Not having dinner. Although I do do that, obv.)

Ark Hopping (avoid80), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 10:34 (twenty years ago)

Hello were a good group as well. Their version of "Game's Up" was far better than the Glitter Band one.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 10:37 (twenty years ago)

People who say 'obv' can't be real lurkers either. I think all you folk who are pretending to be lurkers are just regulars in disguise.

C J (C J), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 10:40 (twenty years ago)

Me, I'm just a lurker in disguise pretending to be a regular.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 10:42 (twenty years ago)

that makes zero sense. i was calling people "asshats" and such during my lurking days, and even pulled the ILX gang sign once.

xpost

g-kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 10:43 (twenty years ago)

Oh.

C J (C J), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 10:44 (twenty years ago)

As a bonafide lurker, I've subconsciously picked up a load of little phrases from here over the years. I use obv fairly regularly in emails, aim convos etc.

lurker king, Wednesday, 3 August 2005 10:44 (twenty years ago)

CJ in sonned by a lurk kid after a ilx beef shocker

g-kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 10:45 (twenty years ago)

b-but lurker king - you're not a lurker any more because you're posting here now. You've broken your duck. So to speak.

Hello, by the way :)

(are you drunk greg? I don't get your banter!)

C J (C J), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 10:47 (twenty years ago)

Good evening ladies and gentlemen! Are your cars parked nicely?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 10:48 (twenty years ago)

Hello

I'll relurk shortly. I'm not very bright and your witty banter intimidates me :(

It's nice to read though.

lurker king, Wednesday, 3 August 2005 10:52 (twenty years ago)

What are your views on Rachel Goswell's first solo outing?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 10:52 (twenty years ago)

I don't know, where did she go on her outing?

C J (C J), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 10:54 (twenty years ago)

Walthamstow.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 10:56 (twenty years ago)

Are lurkers like Iceburgs? Are 9/10s of them underwater? Will the good ship ILX be dashed against those rocks? Where is Captain Anderson?!?!? Oh no! He's in the bath again. Oh dear.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v328/JaredHarrisPhotoGallery/Theatre/t1.jpg

Masonic Boom (kate), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 10:57 (twenty years ago)

i am a lurker. i like reading here, but i feel like i don't really have anything interesting to say myself. i actually lurk more on ILM cause i like reading all sorts of things about music. it's also because i'm probably a bit younger than most people here. i actually coincidently tried to register yesterday but somehow my browser won't let me stay logged in. maybe i am truly meant to be a lurker ;)

bunnies, Wednesday, 3 August 2005 10:57 (twenty years ago)

This is a very confusing thread. Kate, is Harris dead there?

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 10:59 (twenty years ago)

Kate, even for *you* that was a tenuous reason to post a J. Harris photo ;-)

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 10:59 (twenty years ago)

i'm not drunk! i'm at work. yeesh.

anyway, i prefer Sailor Moon.

g-kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 11:00 (twenty years ago)

He's not dead! he's having a bath! (Unless he's playing Marat, which I'm not aware of his ever having done.)

The link was as such... Lurkers are like iceburgs, 9/10s of them are underwater. There was a terrifying scene in To The Ends Of The Earth with an iceburg, but Captain Anderson saved the day. Therefore, clearly, a picture of J.Harris was required. I couldn't find one of him with the Iceburg, so I posted the 1/10 of him that was not underwater, in a bath. So there.

Masonic Boom (kate), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 11:04 (twenty years ago)

That picture MUST be a reconstruction of the 'Death of Marat' non?

http://www.bc.edu/bc_org/avp/cas/his/CoreArt/art/resourcesb/dav_marat_2.jpg

NickB (NickB), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 11:05 (twenty years ago)

I think those proportions maybe slightly wrong. Or Harris is one long mutha. xpost

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 11:05 (twenty years ago)

Either him or BS Johnson.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 11:06 (twenty years ago)

Hello Mrs Captain Anderson! I've missed you!

estela (estela), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 11:09 (twenty years ago)

I wasn't aware Boris Johnson was dead. Did he also die in a bath?

x-post, ahoy sullen scullery maid!

Masonic Boom (kate), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 11:10 (twenty years ago)

All aboard the lurker thread, next stop derailment! Yarr!

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 11:11 (twenty years ago)

I won't be doing any cooking today.

estela (estela), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 11:12 (twenty years ago)

Hey, those lurkers who keep reading this thread and typing things in the box but then deleting them, you should hit 'submit'!

estela (estela), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 11:14 (twenty years ago)

Hello, I am tissp!, popular pirate lurker.

Hey, those lurkers who keep reading this thread and typing things in the box but then deleting them, you should hit 'submit'!

Hahaha, 3000 "Get a life" new answers by tomorrow then.

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 11:16 (twenty years ago)

What about those of us who post nowhere near as much as most of the regulars, for whatever reason? Is there a term separate from lurker?

richardk (Richard K), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 11:18 (twenty years ago)

bunny, there are loads of young people on here with not a lot of interesting things to say but it never stopped anyone ;-)

dog latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 11:18 (twenty years ago)

HELLO!!

kthanxbye

The Lurkers, Wednesday, 3 August 2005 11:22 (twenty years ago)

wow, do you all live in the same house, like the Monkees?

g-kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 11:24 (twenty years ago)

Hey hey we're the lurkers, and people say we lurk on threads

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 11:25 (twenty years ago)

and we all sleep in the same bed like Eric and Ernie

The Lurkers, Wednesday, 3 August 2005 11:26 (twenty years ago)

I used to be a regular, but now I lurk. It's too exhausting and confusing to stay in the ILX world - but too good to stay away. There should be a lurker FAP.

aimurchie (aimurchie), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 11:27 (twenty years ago)

Where everyone would just watch everyone else. It would be creepy as fuck.

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 11:28 (twenty years ago)

sounds hilarious to me.

g-kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 11:30 (twenty years ago)

We like to watch, we live to lurk, lurking makes us freee

The Lurkers, Wednesday, 3 August 2005 11:31 (twenty years ago)

Join us join us join us

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 11:32 (twenty years ago)

"Excuse me, are you an ILX lurker here for the FAP?"
"I'd rather not say."

Onimo (GerryNemo), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 11:32 (twenty years ago)

yknow, maybe some lurkers have 'attended' FAPs and just sat nearby. it's not likely... but it's certainly POSSIBLE.

g-kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 11:34 (twenty years ago)

Sorry but that lurkers refrain is insufficiently melodic.

Comstock Carabineri (nostudium), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 11:34 (twenty years ago)

we've been to a few FAPS. We're the ones standing at the bar not talking to anyone. Hello Comstock, great to see you here!!

The Lurkers, Wednesday, 3 August 2005 11:35 (twenty years ago)

I only ever lurk.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 11:36 (twenty years ago)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 11:38 (twenty years ago)

Hi Ned!! You're our hero!!

The Lurkers, Wednesday, 3 August 2005 11:38 (twenty years ago)

who'd have thought lurkers would be so friendly?

g-kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 11:38 (twenty years ago)

Comstock, maybe this one's melodic enough for you:

Everybody lurks, sometimes.

estela (estela), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 11:39 (twenty years ago)

we never had our own thread before weeeeeee!!!

The Lurkers, Wednesday, 3 August 2005 11:40 (twenty years ago)

lurk king just busted his cherry all over another thread.

Sorry, but somebody who considers mediocre '90s MOR melodies masterpieces obviously hasn't studies well enough what consitutes actually good melodics music, consist of Comfortable Numbs by Millican and Nesbitt, or Baby Cracked My Fire by Jellyfishes, or Mary Lamb Was Littler by Paul McCarthy Wings.

Comstock Carabineri (nostudium), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 11:42 (twenty years ago)

There is?? OK let's revive them and start a lurkers' paradise

The Lurkers, Wednesday, 3 August 2005 11:53 (twenty years ago)

tissp! I think you are just tricking the lurkers.

The Lurkers, don't trust tissp!

estela (estela), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 11:55 (twenty years ago)

Don't worry estela, we always know exactly what's going on. Strange sensation, now we've started posting we're finding it hard to stop.

The Lurkers, Wednesday, 3 August 2005 11:56 (twenty years ago)

I really should not call myself a lurker, since I have posted twice in the past week, and am posting again. But I used to be very involved, and now I find it exhausting. Maybe because I'm employed. it's more fun to read, somehow, than to engage.
if Archel reads this post - I want the link to your blog or website - I had it, briefly, but can't find it now.
The best thing about lurking, or semi-lurking, is the access to other things-that-are-cool.
The TLC song "Creep" is running through my head - I should play it on the stereo whilst getting ready for work.
I'm not a lurker. But I lurk.

aimurchie (aimurchie), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 11:58 (twenty years ago)

don't say i didn't warn you.

It is jolly pointy.

estela (estela), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 12:01 (twenty years ago)

Wow, hey aimurchie good to see you here again! My blog is http://archel.blogspot.com and my poetry webzine thing is http://www.buzzwords.ndo.co.uk. Not sure which one you were reading!

Lurking is sort of a state of mind really - the first post is the hardest and it's quite easy to see how it might never get made.

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 12:02 (twenty years ago)

Thanks for the links - you are now in favorites, and I've subscribed.
I don't have "Creep" on my one TLC cd, so I'll have to creep in my mind.
I think the lurker FAP should happen here - all lurkers lurking while having a pint and saying nothing. it would be a very quiet thread.

Yes it's unsettling at first but we're learning to live with it.

The Lurkers, Wednesday, 3 August 2005 12:19 (twenty years ago)

Yeah I know, it's just a pity that interesting threads keep getting derailed, ruined and rendered unreadable by the usual savage egos around here.

Hi Jaymc!! You've got nice eyes ;)

The Lurkers, Wednesday, 3 August 2005 12:38 (twenty years ago)

I mostly lurk because on the few times I posted it was a total thread-killer, and not just because most of the UK folks are asleep when I post. The next day the thread would be gone, totally unfindable no matter what keywords my paranoid brain could recall. I even tried changing my name, adopting a wacky alias like everyone else. No dice. And my posts were posts of great genuis! This was suppose to make me famous! What the fuck??? I'm going back to lurking.

Beth Parker, Wednesday, 3 August 2005 13:05 (twenty years ago)

(I would love it if the thread died right here)

Me too!

estela (estela), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 13:14 (twenty years ago)

see, the confidence is BAD BAD BAD.

g-kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 13:14 (twenty years ago)

I spend a lot of time lurking here, but have only posted on a handful of occasions. Mostly through a fear of looking like a fool when I need to ask questions like "What does FAP stand for?" Seriously, I have no idea.

Bumchowser (Bumchowser), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 13:22 (twenty years ago)

Click on "FAQ" at the bottom of the page.

I know at least one person in real life who lurks on ILX. I demand they reveal themselves (as they are actually very funny and would fit right in)!

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 13:23 (twenty years ago)

Fancy a Pint?

Beth Parker, Wednesday, 3 August 2005 13:25 (twenty years ago)

Yes, yes I do.

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 13:25 (twenty years ago)

I think we need to have sort of lurker feedback system, so that we can determine if they are getting the most out of their ILX lurking experience. I'd feel bad if we weren't performing to the upmost of our powers.

Not me, I have to go to work, hah. Just answering above question. But if you ever come to the insufferable summer visitor-infested island of Martha's Vineyard, do drop in! YOU can be One of the Insufferable!

Beth Parker, Wednesday, 3 August 2005 13:28 (twenty years ago)

It's ok, I'll drink on my own. RIGHT NOW.

But if you ever come to the insufferable summer visitor-infested island of Martha's Vineyard, do drop in! YOU can be One of the Insufferable!

Isn't that where Scott and Maria live? Or are they on Nantucket? I forget.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 17:31 (twenty years ago)

hi, everyone!

i lurk while i'm at work and post on super rare occasions... i think i've probably done a better job at introducing others (dan m. from chicago, for example) to the ilx world.

brad k! (brad k!), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 18:25 (twenty years ago)

Oh Dan, we like him!

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 18:26 (twenty years ago)

dan's a good guy. we went to college, did a radio show, and drank lots of beer together.

brad koski (brad k!), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 18:30 (twenty years ago)

I lurk mostly, but I'll post when the subject is basketball, My Bloody Valentine, roffles, Texas, or David Banner. And sometimes I noize.

DMB Googleplex (Matt Chesnut), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 18:31 (twenty years ago)

I have a shrewd idea who lurker king might be. Now I shall scuttle back to the shadows, because it is very hot today in the sun.

Aimless (Aimless), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 18:31 (twenty years ago)

I mostly lurk and just post on things like "thread connections" and "misread thread titles", and occasionally try to link pretty much anything to the Simpsons.

already disheveled hair projection (wetmink), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 19:18 (twenty years ago)

Brad!

I clicked on this thread with the thought "I wonder if Koski will rear his head?" and lo and behold...

You need to post more, champ.

dan m (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 19:19 (twenty years ago)

If Lu5a doesn't like it, tell him to go back to his fancypants condo downtown.

dan m (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 19:20 (twenty years ago)

hello. i have been lurking for a while.

lurking is fun. but i may have to start posting lots.

i think posting shall be more fun. mostly because i am fucking hilarious.

michael grant (michael digby grant), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 20:47 (twenty years ago)

i lurk mostly, but generally cannot help myself when the subject breaches Boulder, NYU, shows i've attended, or String Cheese Incident. on other topics (and quite possibly even with the aforementioned), i feel i'd be completely insufferable.

lemin (lemin), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 20:52 (twenty years ago)

Hello.

I lurk often, though I have met quite a few regular ILXors in person. Hello to all of you.

nory (nory), Thursday, 4 August 2005 05:41 (twenty years ago)

I've been a lurker for about a year. I'm just a lurker because I don't have the energy to force my way into ilx/ilm's social circle. I still like the site though.

lurker # 399493, Thursday, 4 August 2005 06:22 (twenty years ago)

Hee Hee morning!

I've just been over on that ILX as collaborative blogosphere soap opera paranoia thread. Hee hee the non-lurkers are a weird bunch!

The Lurkers, Thursday, 4 August 2005 06:59 (twenty years ago)

i blame the lurkers.

g-kit (g-kit), Thursday, 4 August 2005 07:15 (twenty years ago)

Good morning lurkers!

I love the word 'lurker'. It makes me think of someone sneaking around surreptitiously, occasionally stopping to tap the side of his or her nose in a conspiratorial fashion as they mutter "You ain't seen me.....right?". In my mind, all lurkers are like this.

C J (C J), Thursday, 4 August 2005 08:07 (twenty years ago)

I lurk often, though I have met quite a few regular ILXors in person

I read this as "I have quite a few regular ILXors in prison"

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Thursday, 4 August 2005 08:10 (twenty years ago)

I think we need to have sort of lurker feedback system, so that we can determine if they are getting the most out of their ILX lurking experience. I'd feel bad if we weren't performing to the upmost of our powers.

Extensive customer feedback questionnaires with double ended 7-point likert scales.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 4 August 2005 08:12 (twenty years ago)

We can use this thread to comment on things on other threads. You know it goes against our nature to comment in the thread itself.

Oh, you ain't see us OK?

The Lurkers, Thursday, 4 August 2005 08:13 (twenty years ago)

I love it when Ed talks dirty like that.

Ain't seen who?

C J (C J), Thursday, 4 August 2005 08:14 (twenty years ago)

I'll acknowledge my identity if you can guess it...

g-kit (g-kit), Thursday, 4 August 2005 09:22 (twenty years ago)

Lex, cispontine and I met a lurker last night. Hi, skinny lurker dude.

"i like to down load" sounds more like blessed relief from constipation than anything computer-related.

How are your bowels, tommy? Do you eat plenty of fibre?

C J (C J), Thursday, 4 August 2005 10:20 (twenty years ago)

hey, Badly Drawn Kit! I'm very scared now.

g-kit (g-kit), Thursday, 4 August 2005 10:21 (twenty years ago)

why would someone steal and re-post a BDK pic? all theories welcome.

g-kit (g-kit), Thursday, 4 August 2005 10:22 (twenty years ago)

Is that from your photobucket album then?

C J (C J), Thursday, 4 August 2005 10:25 (twenty years ago)

This is getting exciting!

C J (C J), Thursday, 4 August 2005 10:25 (twenty years ago)

:)

No, I saw it about six months ago when someone revived / linked to the thread it was on, and it amused me enough to take a copy of it.

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Thursday, 4 August 2005 10:27 (twenty years ago)

that's sweet but scary!

g-kit (g-kit), Thursday, 4 August 2005 10:28 (twenty years ago)

that's sweet but scary!

That was the idea. I should really have logged out and gone for a creepy lurker name.

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Thursday, 4 August 2005 10:30 (twenty years ago)

During the past 24 hours, on a day when ILX was down for hours, The Lurkers has lurked, taken up posting, quit posting to lurk again, and then resumed posting again. There should be a special medal for that.

estela (estela), Thursday, 4 August 2005 10:31 (twenty years ago)

Birthday presents thus far (it's only 7:30 a.m.): big bouquet of flowers, a massage scheduled for this afternoon. So far so good.

aimurchie (aimurchie), Thursday, 4 August 2005 10:35 (twenty years ago)

C J (C J), Thursday, 4 August 2005 10:42 (twenty years ago)

I remember when I first mentioned there were lurkers a few yrs ago and Tom E. was very surprised I would think there were lurkers. He just couldn't imagine they existed (here). He started a thread but I don't think it was as popular as this one. I love this thread. :-)

nathalie sans denouement (stevie nixed), Thursday, 4 August 2005 11:09 (twenty years ago)

nathalie sans denouement (stevie nixed), Thursday, 4 August 2005 11:19 (twenty years ago)

I posted a bit before. I started a couple of threads even. Then someone was mean to me and i went back to lurking.

maree (maree), Thursday, 4 August 2005 11:19 (twenty years ago)

the evils of confidence strike again.

g-kit (g-kit), Thursday, 4 August 2005 11:20 (twenty years ago)

I find posting & reading ilx and getting any work done are mutually exclusive activities - whereas it's easier to lurk and work. Because you can dip in every time you're bored and there's something new to read - nothing else updates fast enough.

How does it feel to have thousands (perhaps) of people living vicariously through you?

clive (Clive), Thursday, 4 August 2005 11:24 (twenty years ago)

god the poor people who have to live vicariously through my tedious life

gem (trisk), Thursday, 4 August 2005 11:25 (twenty years ago)

I posted a bit before. I started a couple of threads even. Then someone was mean to me and i went back to lurking.

Oh, I wouldn't worry about that, people are mean to me all the time, even on the Internet.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Thursday, 4 August 2005 11:36 (twenty years ago)

Who was mean to you maree? We'll send the boys round to beat them up. (It wasn't me, was it? If so, I am so sorry!)

C J (C J), Thursday, 4 August 2005 11:38 (twenty years ago)

I'll try not to be mean. Happy birthday aimurchie!!!! You must take the day off and lurk in your LEISURE time, as I do. Leisurelurk. Come to the sunscorched Vineyard. We'll FAP it up, you and me and Scott and Maria and any lurkers in the vicinity (yes, jaymc, Scott and Maria do indeed live here. None of us would be CAUGHT DEAD on Nantucket). Oh. That was mean.

Beth Parker, Thursday, 4 August 2005 11:56 (twenty years ago)

i'll agree with clive's comment slightly upthread. regularly posting to ilx seems like it could be a little too time intensive. too many xposts.

with that said, my job seems to be stuck in an extremely boring drought and i'm all about doing something other than staring at boring spreadsheets and sending the same old faxes to the same old people...

brad k! (brad k!), Thursday, 4 August 2005 12:42 (twenty years ago)

Beth, your husband is a dirty lurker too! I am always taken aback when he mentions something to me about myself and I have no CLUE as to how he would know about it, and then he tells me that he read some thread where I mentioned it. It's frightening, I tell you! I wish he would post more on I Love Books. Occasionally he does. And he should really post on I Love Music too, but he is just a big scaredy-cat.

HI, Aimurchie! Happy Birthday! I hope you have a pleasant one.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 4 August 2005 12:51 (twenty years ago)

thuddd (thuddd), Thursday, 4 August 2005 14:31 (twenty years ago)

I don't know anything of Nantucket nor its reputation! (Oh okay, you guys, like, know each other.)

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 4 August 2005 14:45 (twenty years ago)

Yes. We know each other. And we know other people! Who hate Nantucket! One had "NANTUCKET SUCKS" tee-shirts printed up, of which, sadly, only one still exists. As for the husband, look out Scott, you don't want to make him mad. Lurkers are dangerous when cornered.

Beth Parker, Thursday, 4 August 2005 14:54 (twenty years ago)

rrrobyn recently accused me of lurking, though I don't see it that way. So hi, kind of.

superultramega (superultramarinated), Thursday, 4 August 2005 15:06 (twenty years ago)

The birthday is going well so far. I have received a big bouquet, a piece of sinful chocolate cake (from coworkers), and am having a one hour massage this afternoon. And "happy birthday" sung over the phone by my niece(four) and nephew (almost six). That was the best.

aimurchie (aimurchie), Thursday, 4 August 2005 16:37 (twenty years ago)

Soprry - didn't realize I had sent the earlier message. Now I sound like I'm bragging. Oh well - it's a good day to brag!

aimurchie (aimurchie), Thursday, 4 August 2005 16:40 (twenty years ago)

My, my! The brass with which lurker king met my speculations upon his (?) identity would be rather unlike the person I had in mind.

I was thinking you might be Rex Sweeney, once the beloved monarch of Ask A Drunk, who would have been well aware of ILE from Greenspun days. He also would be prone to saying things like 'scuttle back to the shadows' and 'you lot'. I suspect he also would be well-disposed to respond favorably to a coaxing by CJ, if not to most ILxors.

Aimless (Aimless), Thursday, 4 August 2005 16:40 (twenty years ago)

Kind of cut myself back to lurk level in the last year or so, but hi, everybody.

brianiac (briania), Thursday, 4 August 2005 16:56 (twenty years ago)

I've kind of been lurking lately.

gunther heartymeal (keckles), Thursday, 4 August 2005 17:17 (twenty years ago)

Sadly, I have no unexpected identity to reveal. In truth, I've never met an ilxor in my life. Sorry to say, I'm just some nerd who likes to read other people's conversations.

lurker king, Thursday, 4 August 2005 19:39 (twenty years ago)

Actually I just remembered last year at the Acid Mothers Temple show that Elvis T., Matt M. and myself were talking with Mario Rubacalba (I think I have that last name right) when some random dude, early twenties, came up to us and said to me, "Aren't you Ned?" And yes, he was an ILX lurker. Most amusing. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 4 August 2005 20:04 (twenty years ago)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 5 August 2005 00:15 (twenty years ago)

Good morning again, lurkers! How are you all today?

C J (C J), Friday, 5 August 2005 04:56 (twenty years ago)

CJ, I like the way you coax them as if they were shy woodland creatures and you a kind woman with a nice saucer of bread and milk.

estela (estela), Friday, 5 August 2005 05:01 (twenty years ago)

that makes me think the lurkers are hansel and gretel

Heave Ho, Friday, 5 August 2005 05:04 (twenty years ago)

gem, you should nip down to Baker's Delight and get those greedy hapless lurkers some vegemite scrolls.

xpost

estela (estela), Friday, 5 August 2005 05:08 (twenty years ago)

nah i couldn't bring myself to eat a vegemite scroll last weekend. i'm so impressionable! i couldn't let the lurkers have sabotaged pastries either, it wouldn't be welcoming

gem (trisk), Friday, 5 August 2005 05:09 (twenty years ago)

That's funny. I even thought of you on Sunday, eating your vegemite scroll, only to find out now that you didn't.

Anyway, I didn't want to poison anyone, I just wanted the lurkers to be happy little vegemites like us.

estela (estela), Friday, 5 August 2005 05:15 (twenty years ago)

ha. i'll have one this sunday don't you worry about that. the real reason i didn't eat one is i didn't stop at dome on the way to uni to get a coffee (bakers delight is over the road).

I really wish you guys hadn't mentioned Baker's Delight vegemite scrolls, I haven't had one since I left Melbourne for London and I'd completely forgotten they existed. Now with all this talk of them I've got a serious need to chow down on one and there's nothing I can do about it. Damn those things were good.

Bumchowser (Bumchowser), Friday, 5 August 2005 06:51 (twenty years ago)

shame bumchowser, my sympathy. i'll think of you when i have mine on sunday.

gem (trisk), Friday, 5 August 2005 07:01 (twenty years ago)

What's a vegemite scroll? Is it like a danish pastry thing but smeared with veegmite instead? It sounds scrummy!

C J (C J), Friday, 5 August 2005 07:28 (twenty years ago)

it's a pastry yep, but with vegemite and cheese cooked into it. it's a spiral-shape, i imagine it's rolled up before it's cooked? delicious. especially when warm out of the oven first thing in the morning with a coffee or a cuppa

gem (trisk), Friday, 5 August 2005 07:33 (twenty years ago)

Yum. I think I'll attempt to make some of those this weekend.

C J (C J), Friday, 5 August 2005 07:37 (twenty years ago)

wow good luck. i imagine a home made one would truly be some form of heaven on earth.

gem (trisk), Friday, 5 August 2005 07:39 (twenty years ago)

bovril and marmite versions as well?

Ed (dali), Friday, 5 August 2005 07:40 (twenty years ago)

no. australians see bovril and marmite as merely inferior tryhard versions of vegemite, i really don't think a bovril scroll would take off to be honest.

gem (trisk), Friday, 5 August 2005 07:42 (twenty years ago)

Nothing beats the vegemite scroll. I'm going to have to scoff one tomorrow after all this talk.

estela (estela), Friday, 5 August 2005 07:56 (twenty years ago)

A bovril scroll really does sound like something you'd produce in the toilet the morning after a big night out.

Bumchowser (Bumchowser), Friday, 5 August 2005 07:58 (twenty years ago)

oh my. i just spat tea all over my monitor! ahahaha.

sorry i was under the impression this thread had been colonised and renamed as a mongrel thread

bull bum gerry (bulbs), Friday, 5 August 2005 11:47 (twenty years ago)

There must be a special term for the dismay and yes, rejection you feel when your efforts to subvert a thread fall flat. Alternately the affirmation of having the bait taken, as in the case with the vegemite scroll tangent.
I've never had a vegemite scroll, but yesterday I had a cold, congealed cheeseburger from the night before. I love that.

Beth Parker, Friday, 5 August 2005 12:48 (twenty years ago)

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 09:27 (nineteen years ago)

I've delurked loads lately so I'm not sure I qualify as a lurker-propre (lurkre-propre?) any more, but I'll get the ball rolling.

Hello. (I cannot add anything to the vegemite scroll convo upthread)

Zora (Zora), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 09:32 (nineteen years ago)

Well hello there, I take it a knowledge of the existence of the vegemite scroll makes you antipodean?

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 09:35 (nineteen years ago)

No. It makes me someone who read the thread. Or some of it anyway; if I had read it all I would be herculean.

Zora (Zora), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 09:38 (nineteen years ago)

I've been doing much the same as Zora. Used to post then went to Lurk mainly around ILG and ILM (this is of course after loudly swearing off ILE for life and may the devil take me if I came back. Isn't that right Stevem? :) ) but nothing happens there that often so I came back. It's kind of quiet around here at the moment though and there have been a few things that have come up that I've been interested so have been actually pressing 'Submit' rather than hovering over it only to chicken out and press 'New Answers'

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 10:12 (nineteen years ago)

I think it's the quietness that's caused me to de-lurk too. I've been lurking and very occasionally posting on ILM for years, ILE for less years... a little bit on ILG and ILB but they're both pretty quiet.

You seem to know people Kv_nol, I don't know anyone. Sometimes I feel like I'm the only person around here who doesn't know everyone else intimately, and that makes it harder to post.

Zora (Zora), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 10:22 (nineteen years ago)

"Hey, those lurkers who keep reading this thread and typing things in the box but then deleting them, you should hit 'submit'!"

This is me on every thread (except mostly late at night, mostly on ILM, and mostly drunk). Sigh. I'm even doing it now! Oh, feck it, then: *click*.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 10:39 (nineteen years ago)

Dublin's a small town with not many ILXors. Any excuse for a pint really, like this evening for example :)

People seem to know each other well on here, that can make submitting a bit frightening. Intimately though? There seems to be a lot more show than actual intimacy for the most part. It's quite regional (London, New York, Chicago, etc) for better or for worse.

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 10:50 (nineteen years ago)

Zora and Surfer can't be too lurky as I know both their real names :) And they're fab and good-natured and if ILE has lost some of its over-aggressive old-skoolers then I for one welcome our new lurking overlords am delighted that they're taking their place.

p.s. I did know Poo's real name too but as I've forgotten it I'm leaving him out. For what it's worth I feel I know you a bit, Colonel, albeit purely through your posts.

Earwig oh! (Mark C), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 10:52 (nineteen years ago)

The regional thing is interesting but, like all things, even this aspect comes to an end - witness the vast decline in London FAPs even though there are dozen of us here, and I think NY has been through the same thing.

Earwig oh! (Mark C), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 10:53 (nineteen years ago)

Yes people being less aggressive actions is pleasant. I really like registered-only. ILM needs googlers though :) Occasional flame-outs are... interesting but only in the same way that car crashes are.

FAPs come and go, there always seems to be people meeting all over the world which I think is rather (warning: twee about to happen) magical. I've met people in London and Dublin and sure as chips is chips I'll maybe try to meet people wherever I go to next. It's great to meet and have something to get over the first few awkward minutes and from there: It's all gravy baby.

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 11:00 (nineteen years ago)

>> p.s. I did know Poo's real name too

Hint: it's the same as yours!

I was wondering what has happened to London FAPs, cos now I work in Soho I might have been able to go to one, except there aren't any.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 11:07 (nineteen years ago)

enough people seem to want them but nobody seems to want to suggest one, pick a place etc.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 11:10 (nineteen years ago)

ahem

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 11:14 (nineteen years ago)

Zora, you're not the only one who feels like that, trust me!!

Hello, Kit! :-)

Aww bless, Earwig/formerly Markelby, that made me all warm and smiley and stuff.

Right, Kv_nol, next time yer in Ottawa...

surfer_stone_rosa (surfer_stone_rosa), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 11:15 (nineteen years ago)

S_S_R if I'm in that neck of the woods and still on ILX I'm sure that there's a good chance that we'll meet up. Same goes for Dublin.

Yay! We all know each other now. My real name is B1ll G4t3s. Be nice to me and I'll give you money. "Lurkers of teh world unite" or something...

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 11:22 (nineteen years ago)

Ayesha, say hello!

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 11:30 (nineteen years ago)

Aw, I feel all wanted and not-alone now :) You guys are tops. Kv_nol I'll be nice to you even without money! But if you've got 50 grand floating about, want to open a book shop/tea room/small press with me? ;)

Zora (Zora), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 11:40 (nineteen years ago)

I post on ILM, but I only lurk on ILE. No idea why.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 11:55 (nineteen years ago)

i was like that for a while too. it's easier to start on ILM provided you're obsessed enough with the subjects covered there due to the more obvious and intense focus.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 11:57 (nineteen years ago)

Rereading this thread, I am baffled by my own posts... am I always this nonsensical?

steal compass, drive north, disappear (tissp), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 12:18 (nineteen years ago)

Huh?

Earwig oh! (Mark C), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 12:19 (nineteen years ago)

Sorry Zora, Spending all my money on a really big buffet. Or I think I am. I get confused with all the billions!

Actually why not research a combination of all three? A tea press that is in the shape of a book that can be used to surf ebay. I'll make even more money! YAY!

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 12:46 (nineteen years ago)

Ha, I've just won 5, cheers Mark

steal compass, drive north, disappear (tissp), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 13:02 (nineteen years ago)

tissp, you're too clever for me - I can't figure out whether your latest nonsensicality is intentional or not!!

Zora's heart's desire sounds pretty familiar :)

Earwig oh! (Mark C), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 13:19 (nineteen years ago)

hm, just to ammend what i said upthread slightly: i don't really know many peoples on ILX, but damn, a lot of them seem to know me.

Kv_nol, please will you give me money for the washing machine? I need four quarters and two loonies (that's a Canadian dollar coin, fact fans). But if you're dealing in heart's desires, I'll take a villa in Malta. Just a small one.

Hurrah, Kit's friend counter is going up!

surfer_stone_rosa (surfer_stone_rosa), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 13:51 (nineteen years ago)

Ha! I started this thread but I've pretty much turned into a lurker myself these days. Pressure of work, lots of stuff going on, not enough hours in the day etc etc blah blah.

I should make the effort to post more, I miss all the fun times.

C J (C J), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 14:36 (nineteen years ago)

Fuck that, just Have Malta. If you like I'll throw in Corsica and Sardegna. Not Sicily though, I'ma keeping that for ME!

A loonie? Class! We used to have animals up until the euro came along. I enjoy having Sweden as the willy of Europe on the back of the coins! Finland are the nuts. Nuff said etc.

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 14:47 (nineteen years ago)

the trouble is, i miss the fun times too...

teh_kit has 22 friends (g-kit), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 14:49 (nineteen years ago)

I am disappointed that this revival features no actual lurkers -- I've read posts from all of you lot!

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 15:04 (nineteen years ago)

We're all just shy and want to be noticed and loved. Except teh_kit, he just wants to pwn.

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 15:12 (nineteen years ago)

I love you all. (I am that way.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 15:31 (nineteen years ago)

So we gathered. We love you too, you merry person.

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 15:35 (nineteen years ago)

xxxpost Jaymc, lurking is a state of mind! xxpost Kv_nol OTM (I'm angling for Gibraltar too, can you tell?).

xpost Ned is the patron saint of shy almost-lurkers. Ned, I was too shy to say this on the NEDS ON A CANADA thread, but I'll be in Vancouver after July 1st and am sorry that I will have missed you because you seem like a Genuinely Good Bloke.

surfer_stone_rosa (surfer_stone_rosa), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 15:40 (nineteen years ago)

Howdy. I posted a bit last summer when I had a full-time office job, stopped while school was in session, and am starting up now that I sit in front of a computer at work all day. I work at a university library helping people with research questions, so I found that Oberlin librarian thread particularly hilarious. Wish someone would do that at University of Maryland.

matlewis (matlewis), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 16:01 (nineteen years ago)

Mat, you should post (more) to the DC thread! A quick glance will reveal that our standards are quite lax.

Stephen X (Stephen X), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 16:06 (nineteen years ago)

Everyone post more. More! MORE!

Zora (Zora), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 21:17 (nineteen years ago)

Okay okay!!!!!
I actually never was a lurker. I posted as soon as I got on here, on some sad pet-death thread. Then this, and then another and another. And I talk too much in person, too. Blah blah blah blah.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 00:31 (nineteen years ago)

I lurk more than I post. And I've yet to FAP. Does that count?

Oh, and Hello!

Collardio Gelatinous (collardio), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 01:44 (nineteen years ago)

Very nice indeed. You all seem very nice.

A Giant Mechanical Ant (The Giant Mechanical Ant), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 03:09 (nineteen years ago)

Callardio, you should come to Boise and FAP with me. I've often been known to fancy pints, but never in the presence of internets buddies.

Abbott (Abbott), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 03:21 (nineteen years ago)

(many xposts) Gibraltar isn't an island, the spanish and english would get snotty and secede - much as I would enjoy that I do like the EU and freedom of movement. Sorry S_S_R.

Yay to coming out as lurkers. Now to tell my family about my new partner 'Submit'.

Now are we all to return to the dark corners or like Matlewis are we here to stay?

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 07:40 (nineteen years ago)

I probably only sort of count. Been reading a lot longer than I've been posting, which is always spotty. Only problem with a Boise FAP is that it's Boise, Abbott!

ALLAH FROG (Mingus Dew), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 07:47 (nineteen years ago)

hello. :)

I think I post about 2 sentences a month.

Roz (Roz), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 07:58 (nineteen years ago)

I gave serious consideration to opting out of ILE when my reputation was at its worst (though it's probably still down there despite my attempts at good behaviour over the last year or so) and re-registering as someone new and anonymous, but I thought my mannerisms (ha, polite word for it) were too obvious.

Earwig oh! (Mark C), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 08:17 (nineteen years ago)

You were saying. I would change everything and let the people you think might want to know know your new identity and then just start afresh. Atoning in public for perceived acts doesn't seem to be having the effect you wanted so why not be selfish and start over?

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 08:46 (nineteen years ago)

Well, I don't want to seem like I'm cheating anyone, I guess. While it'd be great if suddenly, say, Ronan though nu-secret-me was an ace bloke, he'd probably feel pretty betrayed if/when I revealed my true identity.

I just prefer to tell the truth whenever possible, basically. It seems easier in the long run.

And as for people not liking me - I think I'm used to it now, even though I hate it. As long as I keep the friends I've got and make new ones, I can't allow myself to be upset because people I'd like to like me never will.

Earwig oh! (Mark C), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 08:50 (nineteen years ago)

Unrequited friendship, the paperiest cut of all.

Zora (Zora), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 08:51 (nineteen years ago)

they seem to be in the minority anyway. (xpost)

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 08:52 (nineteen years ago)

teh_kit has 22 friends (g-kit), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 09:36 (nineteen years ago)

Oh and hello to the people who delurked after I left last night. Roz, I have definitely seen you post; you're the reason I'm not using my real name! ;)

Zora (Zora), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 09:40 (nineteen years ago)

hello lurkers, i'm lurking more than posting myself lately.
i like you earwigby.

estela (estela), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 09:44 (nineteen years ago)

And as for people not liking me - I think I'm used to it now, even though I hate it. As long as I keep the friends I've got and make new ones, I can't allow myself to be upset because people I'd like to like me never will.

I would say that was OTM.

Anyway an ILx lurker fell in love with me and I fell in love with her right back so a happy ending as far as that's concerned! Hurrah for the lurkers (as I seem to remember was a permanent graffiti feature of various brick walls in Fulham in the late '70s)...

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 09:46 (nineteen years ago)

Morning Zora!

Hello Collardio, I'm a FAP virgin too.

Hello Nory!

Hello Roz! (what's the story behind your name, then?!)

Kv_nol, we are here to stay, DAMMIT! If only on this thread.
(And all right, I'll give up on Gibraltar, but only because I don't want to upset anyone.)

Ha, "Earwigby"! I'm borrowing that, if I may. Anyway, Earwigby, you seem very cool to me, so it's obviously working!

Marcello :-)

surfer_stone_rosa (surfer_stone_rosa), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 09:49 (nineteen years ago)

B) (that's the "cool" emoticon, right?)

Estela you post the funniest posts on ILE bar none, so I'm very pleased you like me :)

(Haha Mark and Marcello go emo...)

Earwig oh! (Mark C), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 09:58 (nineteen years ago)

It was inevitable, really.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 10:04 (nineteen years ago)

Hello Roz! (what's the story behind your name, then?!)

I don't know if Roz has an exciting story about her name, but there's no story as to the connection, really - my name is Roz and I thought 'well, that's taken then'. Boring! Sorry!

Zora (Zora), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 10:12 (nineteen years ago)

Ok NOW we're all getting a bit circle-jerky... Still, sunlight can be intoxicating!

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 10:53 (nineteen years ago)

Bah, givf sunlight.

Hey, Lurkers, why not Lurk at the pub, we'll see if we can spot oyu.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 12:48 (nineteen years ago)

Not living in London makes that a bit of an effort.

Zora (Zora), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 13:08 (nineteen years ago)

I don't think you count anymore anyway, you have been enticed out of your lurking position.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 13:10 (nineteen years ago)

It won't last.

Zora (Zora), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 15:47 (nineteen years ago)

hello. :)
I think I post about 2 sentences a month.

Roz, I was actually thinking about you on this thread, because when Zora started posting a few months ago, I'd wondered if it was you under a new name.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 15:54 (nineteen years ago)

(Oh, I posted too soon -- I see this has been sorted out then!)

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 15:55 (nineteen years ago)

Oi. I posted twice in 2003, I can't believe you didn't notice.

Much merriment to marvel at.

Ned, I was too shy to say this on the NEDS ON A CANADA thread, but I'll be in Vancouver after July 1st and am sorry that I will have missed you because you seem like a Genuinely Good Bloke

Aw, thanks. :-) Another time! And don't fret about being shy.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 16:39 (nineteen years ago)

I'm not quite a lurker, but not quite a regular either. But since there's no thread for occasional (couple times a week) posters to say hello, I'll say it here:

Hello.

naus (Robert T), Thursday, 29 June 2006 04:52 (nineteen years ago)

Hello Naus!

xpost: Hurrah for another time! :-) And shyness is nice but, etc. etc.

surfer_stone_rosa (surfer_stone_rosa), Thursday, 29 June 2006 07:31 (nineteen years ago)

I'm just like naus, post maybe once or twice a week, so hello.

I have about 50 posts spread out over 2 years or so, so I guess I'm mostly a lurker. It's just that I'm usually on here from work and don't really have the time to get into in depth discussions.

peter in montreal (spaces are allowed), Thursday, 29 June 2006 13:30 (nineteen years ago)

"in depth discussions"? hahahahahaha.
okay, there are some, of course. but still, funny. hi peter in mtl!
now there are two mtl lurkers on this thread (hi richard!). are there more? hm.

Woops, missed the confusion upthread. My nick? No interesting story.. my name's Rozanna but most of my friends call me Roz and that's it. I'm no JBR with my screennames. ;)

Zora, "a Roz" - cool! Now we can start a Roz club to go with the Mikes and Marks around here.

and thanks for the hi's, the rest of ya. :)

beanz (beanz), Friday, 30 June 2006 08:21 (nineteen years ago)

Hello Peter! Hello Sugar!

@Roz: Yay Roz club! \o/ I've known Ros's but never another Roz... I actually chose Roz over Ros because people kept pronouncing it 'Ross'. The Z fixes that. My given name is Rosalyn but I've never used it; I was known as Rosie until I decided I would put a stop to that, aged 11.

Rozanna is really pretty, is it spanish?

Zora (Zora), Friday, 30 June 2006 09:05 (nineteen years ago)

Hello jibé! Hello Peter! Hello Sugar! Hello beanz!

I've never asked a question, although I have many.

Zora (Zora), Friday, 30 June 2006 10:55 (nineteen years ago)

six months pass...
Okay I just accidentally revived a thread Lurkers Delurk on I Love Comics instead of ILE.

I would like to formally invite Beth P.'s hubby Donald to come out of the shadows. He has posted sometimes on ILB and ILM. He's funny and one of my better friends. He has been lurking for years.

Donwaldo?

Maria :D (Maria D.), Monday, 8 January 2007 16:35 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, and I realise it's deadline week for you, so maybe you're busy now. But do come out and play when you can!

Maria :D (Maria D.), Monday, 8 January 2007 16:36 (nineteen years ago)

ILE being registration-only probably makes it somewhat harder for this thread to be successful, I fear.

Don't be afraid, lurkers!

StanM (StanM), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 10:22 (nineteen years ago)

come out come out WHEREVAH you are! :-)

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 10:23 (nineteen years ago)

I so rarely start threads, that I get quite ridiculously happy when one of mine gets revived (even if it's accidentally).

Hello lurkers :)

C J (C J), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 11:07 (nineteen years ago)

I have lurked for a while and made a few posts here and there, but not very many

hello all the same!

Mark Co (Markco), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 11:11 (nineteen years ago)

Hello, hello!

Is "Mark Co" a company set up specifically for everyone on ILX named Mark?

C J (C J), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 11:15 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, it is the Mark Conglomerate Holding Company!

(actually there was already another Mark C so I had to add an extra letter...)

Mark Co (Markco), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 11:17 (nineteen years ago)

There are millions of Marks on here.

Mark B (Colonel Poo), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 11:19 (nineteen years ago)

All holding their conglomerates.

C J (C J), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 11:21 (nineteen years ago)

Thanks for changing your name, Mark Co, very accomodating of you!

=== temporary username === (Mark C), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 11:58 (nineteen years ago)

no worries - whenever I posted anything people would go "omg, omg there's another Mark C!!!" !!

alright, i'm game for stepping out of the shadows... i've been hiding in them for over a year.

hi everyone! thanks for the amusement, aggravation and inspiration.

and yes, montreal fap, please.

anhellica (angelurker), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 16:31 (nineteen years ago)

Since my own husband won't come out of the shadows, I'll just have to post for two.
Hello hello, Markco and Angelurker!!!!

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 17:21 (nineteen years ago)

Come out, Donald!

Hi Markco and Angelurker! I'd be down with a Montreal FAP too.

I don't think I've posted anywhere since my last post on this thread :-(

surfer_stone_rosa (surfer_stone_rosa), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 02:21 (nineteen years ago)

hey more montrealers! two others? (or surfer-s-r, are you in ottawa?)
as if we have faps! it's called s1ocki is djing + let's go! (except i keep missing his parties :/ ) we'll have to get our slacker selves together, somehow, one day.

hi!

mucho (mucho), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 23:14 (nineteen years ago)

I'm here again. Used to "talk" more but stopped cuz I never get the chance to stay in the thread and see what all is said. I have to jump off and do something stupid like, eh, work. So I figure what's the point. I'm usually late to the thread anyway and it's all been said and people have moved onto another topic. Then the whole poxy fule thing with old ilx and nuilx...but here I am and big shout out HELLO to anyone who ever talked to me or responded on a thread!!

Wiggy (Wiggy), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 23:18 (nineteen years ago)

Hi Wiggy, Mucho!

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Thursday, 11 January 2007 00:08 (nineteen years ago)

I suppose I'm just a lurker now.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Thursday, 11 January 2007 00:10 (nineteen years ago)

No, not now.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Thursday, 11 January 2007 00:37 (nineteen years ago)

Hang on, I remember Wiggy and Melissa W as being more regular posters than me, and I don't count myself as a lurker. Just because it's fashionable to lurk these days... *cuh*.

emil.y (emil.y), Thursday, 11 January 2007 01:20 (nineteen years ago)

Hello Fellow Lurkers & Quasi-Lurkers!

(Why do I keep imagining that everyone on this thread speaks like Alvin & the Chipmunks?)

I used to be a lurker. I even used to be a "lurker". Not anymore. I still lurk a great many places, but this ain't one of them. Hello and a much-belated welcome to my more appropriate newer (vs. new) login name.

Phoenix Dancing (krushsister), Thursday, 11 January 2007 04:26 (nineteen years ago)

five years pass...

without outing them, i will now use a code that can only be decoded by the lurkers themselves to make a public plea for my two favorite lurkers to unlurk and join the wonderful world of ilx.

1) - E - L -
- R - - H -

maybe you do have an account but you've only posted with it twice, back in 2008 or something, and i have no idea what it is. come forth! oooooooneeeeee oooooof uuuuuusssss

2) - E - -
- A M - L - O -

dude, you are more ilx than anyone i know on ilx. this is inevitable. i know you see this. come forth! oooooooneeeeee oooooof uuuuuusssss

lurkers are endearingly shy and retiring creatures. i recommend their dipping their left big toe into I Love Books as their first foray into the hopefully just exciting enough while not being too exciting world of ilxordom. ILB is exciting in a very soothing sort of way.

upon no account should they delurk in Ask A Drunk. the very thought of such a thing makes me step repeatedly on several of these garden rakes which are thoughtlessly strewn about my feet, causing them to leap from their supinity to smash my noggin with great violence. this seems wrong and bad.

Hi! I'm primarily a lurker, though I've posted very sporadically since 2004, mostly on ILB and ILF. I'm thoroughly addicted, but almost totally zing-less, so lurking suits me. Hi. I've made a few posts but mostly I have been lurking for...a disturbingly long time. I've learned a lot about music (and other things) from this site and am grateful that it exists. The main reason I don't post more often is because I'm afraid I will get sucked in and never do anything else. Maybe I will post more now that I have announced myself.

Pat Finn, Saturday, 8 December 2012 05:07 (thirteen years ago)

question for all lurkers:

how often do you use suggest ban/flag post?

❏❐❑❒ (gr8080), Saturday, 8 December 2012 06:32 (thirteen years ago)

I have never done that.

Pat Finn, Saturday, 8 December 2012 06:35 (thirteen years ago)

I think part of the appeal of lurking is the sense of absolute detachment from what is going on, like being an invisible ghost hovering over people as they have a conversation. I think that illusion would be shattered if I tried to effect what was going on in the conversations by flagging posts. My style of lurking might be different than that of other people though. You should start a poll for lurkers.

It seems to me that 'sock puppet' has lost its original meaning, which indicated that a single user would assume multiple voices in order to impersonate a crowd, all of whom were in enthusiastic agreement with the opinions expressed by the originator of the puppets. It was a method for creating the impression that an idea was so persuasive that it had numerous adherents.

The next step in the (d)evolution of this concept was that a sock puppet was more of a mask or persona, a decidedly fictional character passing itself off as a human being. Its purpose was to push hard at the boundaries of believability, and to play on the gullibility of the audience to the secret amusement of those who got the joke.

Nowadays, I see 'sock' flung at new posters who say only innocuous, pleasant or unexceptional things, who may or may not have posted under a different login name at some time in the past, and it seems like a distinction without a difference.

Assuming for a moment Pat Finn were a 'sock', what would that even mean? And why would anyone care?

Aimless, Sunday, 9 December 2012 20:20 (thirteen years ago)

strongo how often did you lurk in your 5 years of not posting?

there has not been a year since 2001 where i did not post to ilx at some point, however frequently. though i can assure you that in my various sabbaticals -- a big chunk of late 2004, most of late 2007 and i think pretty much all of 2008, and then big chunks of each year betwen 2009 to 2012 -- i did not lurk. usually what would happen is someone would point something out to me, on IM or facebook or whatever, and i'd get sucked back in. the last time i think it was underrated aerosmith bootlegs goading me into wading into the mr. jay batman tomfoolery. honestly the whole point of this place has always been the interaction to me. the whole idea of ilx as some human ant farm to be observed by lurkers from a distance has always been creepy and weird to me. if i wanted to just watch ridiculous people doing dumb things, i have a tv.

flopson, Sunday, 9 December 2012 20:28 (thirteen years ago)

i wouldn't lurk on threads that dealt with personal or gossipy topics. i would just go in and read the threads on things i was interested in, usually on ilm. i wouldn't follow the discussions "live" usually, but dig around the archives. there have been interesting discussions on this site. the first thread i ever read was on sasha frere-jones's article, "a paler shade of white". i stumbled across it and then was surprised to find sasha frere jones responding to criticism. i was a teenager and i thought it was a cool and interesting discussion but not one that i, at that point, felt qualified to contribute to. after that i got into the habit of lurking.

Pat Finn, Sunday, 9 December 2012 20:31 (thirteen years ago)

i didn't think of it as a kind of voyeurism. more of a way of learning about music and the discourse of music criticism.

Pat Finn, Sunday, 9 December 2012 20:32 (thirteen years ago)

i feel like a lot of people use this site like i did. it's a good place to immediately find multiple perspectives on a single topic.

cerealbar, Sunday, 9 December 2012 21:54 (thirteen years ago)

i don't mind if lurkers know about my personal life because i spread way too much around about it in the early days, my excuse for which is a.) youthful idiocy and b.) none of us really knowing how much google et al would change everything. (plus honestly as late as 2005 i was not entirely convinced ilx would be around forever.) also my job has been semi-public for the last 10 years, and somewhat bound up with ilm in weird ways, so there's not much i can do about that.

the whole idea of ilx as some human ant farm to be observed by lurkers from a distance has always been creepy and weird to me. if i wanted to just watch ridiculous people doing dumb things, i have a tv.

otm which is why i keep my personal shit fairly minimal here, not bc of the regs but bc of the lurkers who pop in after years and recite info about ilxors like theyve been following their career since the '70s.

oh man. this is the first time i've read this thread and i feel kind of guilty now. it was seriously on my new years resolutions 2012 list to actually finally post here. i was ok with seeming like an aspie shut-in for doing so, it was just really important to me to register some of my appreciation for what ilx has meant to me over the years. this place was like having 1000 cool older siblings at once, and as someone who has never had a figure like that and has always wanted one ilx was a godsend. i was raised in a p strict fundie christian home and i'm used to exposing myself to culture silently and without participation, starting with running away from my mom in the public library as a kid to flip through "private parts" by howard stern and "stuck rubber baby" by howard cruse, mouth agape. i apologize for any discomfort caused and please know that only gratitude/contribution was intended.

thanks for posting that slam dunk. my experience was similar to yours and i suspect that many other lurkers could say the same. when i was younger i really loved reading the long, essay-length posts in ilx and ilm and it was exciting to me to know that other people were out there who thought deeply and critically about pop culture the way i did. in my circle of friends i always felt sort of alone in wanting to have really long, intensive conversations about movies, books, and albums. when i got older i started to feel less isolated in this tendency, but still i would enjoy checking these boards once in a while and dipping into critical conversations, but maybe less frequently than i used to. idk why i am posting now, really, except i think i want to contribute to this site, which i really do think is one of the best (most intelligent, civil) messageboards on the internet.

Jesus Allah Moses. One of several reasons I quit posting here QUICK! was because of all the morons presuming I "must be someone else." Because, you know, there's only so many people in the world - otherwise, how special could you possibly be? So anyway, I occasionally tune in but don't bother commenting - but I thought I'd make an exception to share this special "fuck you" moment. You have disappointed me. it's really not got anything to do with the argument (indeed there often is no argument other than 'i'm real!' 'no you're not, fuck off') and everything to do with the percentage likelihood of the newbie being a sock and also time-honoured 'you're a sock, fuck off' welcoming ritual which any sock (or, god forbid, a freshly-registered lurker who actually exists -though i'm sceptical myself that any such have ever been independently and creditably verified) will pass through with due respect for their part in the tradition

I'm sorry, I don't actually know or care who "cattle grind" is, but I can add that to the list of guesses. Nobody besides me seems to think it is pathetic that there *IS* a list of guesses as to my identity. How paranoid, exactly, are you people?

Again, you know, there are hundreds of millions of Americans, Canadians and British, not to mention a few people who live in other countries --- it might be just a tad premature to presume the limit of available persona on your little site had been reached. NOOOO!!! WE ARE THE ONLY PEOPLE WHO LIKE TO DISCUSS MUSIC, WHO ELSE COULD THERE BE?

But why reason with you when I could just insult you instead. It wouldn't be right for me to go without thanking buzza for posting the link to that thread, because in my few months of dabbling here, buzza has proven himself amongst the most irritating sort of slitherin-trash in general, so he (it has to be a he) couldn't have meant well by posting that link. Buzza probably imagines that the material in that thread demonstrates the exact opposite thing that it in fact means.

Not that there aren't lots of good folks who post here anyway, but a significant fraction of you should start your own oppressive boys school to actually keep a captive audience of frightened little posers who would actually feel the burning need to gain your approval.

As I said far upthread, as long as an ilxor with a new or unrecognized handle is conducting themselves in a perfectly acceptable manner, then arguing whether or not they are "a sock" or "a newbie" or "an ex-lurker" is an utterly meaningless exercise in blather. I don't mind if you all want to assume I'm Momus. But I think it's weird that so many here assume that new people or lurkers wouldn't want to post here and so new posters must be socks. The pace of this site is so fast that I suspect each regular poster is actually four or five people working in shifts, making sure the conversation keeps going by maintaining a shared persona.

still feel kinda crepey about my shift from lurkerdom to posting, anyway. perhaps that's why i get all tmi and overshare, to make up for it, or something.

also, i am fully aware that i am a TERRIBLE poster so far. i cannot believe how big the difference between lurking and actually posting is. as far as my posts, they ALWAYS come out wrong. just a little bit longer, and maybe i'll begin to say all kinds of profound things?

boy_slayer, Saturday, 5 January 2013 09:39 (thirteen years ago)

Its interesting that some ppl object to newbies knowing a lot about the board history, when we kind of encourage lurking and learning, which is common for forums. You can't win! You can barge in LouJag styles and make yr (messy) mark, blundering in knowing nothing about ILX and getting shouted at for not taking time to get the feelz of things. Or you can quietly appear and look crepey cos you lurked for some time and happen to know a few memes/popular ILXors etc as a result.

Its funny, because either way I dont recall getting hammered when I appeard here, but it was a long time ago and socks werent a think back in 03 I dont think.

Una Stubbs' Tears (Trayce), Saturday, 5 January 2013 12:25 (thirteen years ago)

Has someone lurked for like.. 10 years and then started posting? That would be awesome.

Jeff, Saturday, 5 January 2013 14:20 (thirteen years ago)

Hiya. I've lurked on this board for a creepy long time. I'm aware of Marissa Marchant is how creepy I am. Anyhow I'm going to get involved in ILX so that other lurkers can go "If that mad arse can post on this messageboard then why shouldn't I get involved."

TheScienceLaw, Monday, 21 January 2013 03:54 (thirteen years ago)

you never us

❏❐❑❒ (gr8080), Monday, 21 January 2013 03:56 (thirteen years ago)

Ha ha ha ha. I want to be us.

TheScienceLaw, Monday, 21 January 2013 03:58 (thirteen years ago)

You'll be fine, as long as you only post inspirational Facebook macros in order to mock them.

P.S. Marissa Marchant awareness is indeed impressive, bcz MM Awareness Month doesn't happen until April.

Aimless, Monday, 21 January 2013 05:34 (thirteen years ago)

Long time lurker. I like reading what people who get paid to think and write a lot about music, think about other things as opposed to their music writing.

All kinds of heinous things, Monday, 21 January 2013 05:44 (thirteen years ago)

i should get paid to write about music

Z S, Monday, 21 January 2013 16:40 (thirteen years ago)

i bet it's a goldmine!

Z S, Monday, 21 January 2013 16:41 (thirteen years ago)

mh, Monday, 21 January 2013 16:41 (thirteen years ago)

Hello lurkers, why do you lurk?

pomenitul, Thursday, 28 November 2019 18:12 (six years ago)

lurking 9 to 5, what a way to make a living

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Thursday, 28 November 2019 19:33 (six years ago)

all taking and no giving with these guys

maffew12, Thursday, 28 November 2019 19:54 (six years ago)

j., Thursday, 28 November 2019 19:57 (six years ago)

it's been a hard day's night and I've been lurking like a dog

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Thursday, 28 November 2019 20:00 (six years ago)

I can't tell lurkers apart from my inner critics, nbd.

pomenitul, Thursday, 28 November 2019 20:01 (six years ago)

It doesn’t make any sense to me. Like ppl who scroll on fb/insta and never even click the like button. The hell

nathom, Thursday, 28 November 2019 23:47 (six years ago)

maybe we should have a button. not exactly 'like'. maybe 'acknowledge'

imago, Thursday, 28 November 2019 23:51 (six years ago)

'pondering'

Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 28 November 2019 23:54 (six years ago)

I have lurked on a few sites from time to time. sometimes I would write a comment and in the writing of it realise I didn't have anything valuable to add, then I wouldn't post it. this was what I did in my first year here. still don't end up posting maybe 40% of the time. some days, like today, I take out my bad mood by posting a load of stupid jokes. then tomorrow I will regret it and lurk for a (probably short) while again.

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Thursday, 28 November 2019 23:55 (six years ago)

'otm'

rob, Thursday, 28 November 2019 23:56 (six years ago)

I would like just once to read a thread in alphabetical order, as god intended

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Friday, 29 November 2019 00:05 (six years ago)

maybe we should have a button. not exactly 'like'. maybe 'acknowledge'

― imago

would kill for an "acknowledge" button, i've never wanted anybody to "like" anything i say

Agnes Motörhead (rushomancy), Friday, 29 November 2019 00:15 (six years ago)

it could be variable by stylesheet selection?
acknowledge
otm
that'll do

maffew12, Friday, 29 November 2019 00:19 (six years ago)

some people like reading words, some people like listening, some people don’t automatically think their opinions are worth sharing

brimstead, Friday, 29 November 2019 01:27 (six years ago)

It makes me paranoid.

nathom, Friday, 29 November 2019 01:30 (six years ago)

we already have a button for acknowledging the value of a post, it's between "bookmark" and "link"

britain's secret sauce (seandalai), Friday, 29 November 2019 01:45 (six years ago)

tbh the politics threads here are the first place I go for news. I check in more times a day than I’d like to admit. I’d like to thank everyone there for keeping me informed and for keeping me sane in these dark years. It’s good to feel like I am among smart, sane people who have opinions that are grounded in actual reality and make sense, even if I don’t participate.

epistantophus, Friday, 29 November 2019 01:45 (six years ago)

otm

maffew12, Friday, 29 November 2019 02:51 (six years ago)
