Watching it a few times, what Carville said just wasn't anything out of the ordinary given the sort of verbal fisticuffs Novak normally deals in. On first blush, the fact that host Ed Henry was about to ask Novak questions about the Plame case suggests that maybe he was looking for an excuse to duck out. But that doesn't really make sense either. After all, Novak's been BSing (shall we say) about the Plame case for two years now. Why stop now?

Clearly, the sort of stuff that leads a veteran reporter like Novak to flip out on camera and march off the set doesn't necessarily work by linear, logical reasoning. He did march off, after all. So something must have been eating at him. And the Plame saga (broadly speaking) must be the dominant issue in the guy's life at the moment. But I still don't think I've seen an adequate explanation or even a solid theory.

Oh, I don't know about that. Carville's WSJ line, and the emasculating "show 'em you're tough" - imgine you're Novak. And hear Carville's voice & his diction: he's got a real gift for needling. I think he really got under Novak's skin with that line.

I think part of it is that I've seen bad act after bad act after bad act from the powers that be and their minions, and really, nothing happens. So until some indictments go down, I'll remember that Novak is off to his yacht, or the Vineyard, or the Hamptons, or whatever multi-million dollar accomodation he's rocking, and laughing at us all. He's making the exact point that blows away the right-wing chaff about whether or not Rove actually used Plame's name. It doesn't matter, any fool could have found it once they knew her story.

That doesn't dissuade me from speculating that somebody on Crossfire planned to "challenge" Novak on his statement.

It's not just that Novak doesn't want to answer questions; what's clear is that he doesn't think he should have to. The comparison that keeps coming to my mind is with Jack Nicholson's Colonel Jessup in "A Few Good Men." "You need me on that wall. You want me on that wall. And you can't handle it if I have to out a few CIA agents now and then."

Clearly, Bob Novak's temper-tantrum was one of the more bizarre spectacles we've seen on CNN in a while, but as my friend Phil noted this morning, it wasn't the only odd thing Novak said yesterday.

There was no indication he was kidding. Novak wasn't smiling.

So, here we have a veteran political journalist, who's been in DC for decades, telling a national television audience that other journalists have conspired against him to manipulate photographs to make him look unattractive. Indeed, as far as Novak is concerned, this alleged history of photo manipulation accounts for "a lot of [his] trouble in the world."

I've never cared for Novak, but even I hate to see a guy fall apart like this. Obscene outbursts, temper tantrum, paranoia, victim complex … let's hope Novak gets some help.

Novak's old Crossfire partner Mike Kinsley wrote a column, at some point, about having some kind of delicate brain surgery for his Parkinson's, and about deciding what his first words afterward would be.
