Most overrated sneakers?

I vote New Balance. They must have some sort of subliminal brainwashing campaign wherein everyone I know is under the impression that shoes don't get any more comfortable than New balances, like my feet will be floating around on pillows as soon as I tie them. In reality, the shoe never conforms properly to my foot, and although I've never had a problem with blisters in my life, now these fuckers give me blisters any time I run or walk more than a half a mile. I'm sticking with my reebok classics.

Fuck a new balance!

deej.., Monday, 15 August 2005 17:03 (twenty years ago)

I also vote any basketball shoes designed after '96, when suddenly they all started looking nasty unless you were wearing official starter shorts. Early 90s basketball shose could be worn with jeans and they looked raw.

deej.., Monday, 15 August 2005 17:05 (twenty years ago)

I would say Dunks but that's probably a little too obvious. Asics Tigers, on the hand, will never be overrated! Says me.

maybe it's your foot that's the problem and not the sneaker? saying a sneaker is "overrated" because it doesn't conform to YOUR FOOT OMG WTF is seriously fucking obnoxious.

sittin here la la waitin for my ya ya (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 15 August 2005 18:36 (twenty years ago)

Addidas are horrible if you actually use them to do athletic things. A few years ago I bought a pair of hi-top b-ball ones -- because they are just about the only brand that don't make horrible tacky, gaudy b-ball shoes with a lot of shiny plastic and busy designs --- and the sole started falling apart after using them just a couple times. I bitched to headquarters, and they sent me a new pair, and the same shit happened.

The shoes that HURT me, two (slow learner) pairs in a row are Sauconys. They developed a lump in the sole that poked right into the ball of my foot. A couple of times I actually took the shoe off and looked to see if I had a rock in it. Bad. Back to Nikes.

Most people somewhat OTM except about New Balance. I have very wide feet with high arches. My *suede* New Balance sneakers are sooooo comfortable and outlast everything else I have ever owned. Best walking shoes ever.

I'm Hi, Jared Fogle (ex machina), Monday, 15 August 2005 20:06 (twenty years ago)

Let me just get in line behind HJF with the NBs and also Sauconys -- I have wide toes, high arches, and I supinate. If this isn't true of your feet, I'm sure there's some better-fitting shoe out there for you.

Laurel, Monday, 15 August 2005 20:13 (twenty years ago)

Y'all got some weird-ass dogs. Maybe you need to check out the orthopedic catalogs.
I actually have high arches too. A friend of mine gets special orthotics for her shoes. Once she gave me the original insert that came with her running shoes and I doubled up. It didn't really work.
Skateboarding shoes like Vans, Sketchers, etc are terrible for me. Huge uncozy toe box, no arch support at all. I like the snugness of a running shoe even though I just use them for work and walking.

Beth Parker, Wednesday, 17 August 2005 01:30 (twenty years ago)

Um, you're supposed to buy the shoe that fits you. New Balances happen to be the only ones that fit me, since no one else bothers to make wide widths anymore. Saying they're generally overrated because they don't fit YOU is borderline retarded.

I'm all about going to the runner's-only stores that seem only to exist in more "affluent" parts of town (not a surprise, but still), and slamming down a stupid amount of cash for the right running shoe, whatever the make - but these are my FEET, I need my feet and I dig the running.

I seem to always end up with New Balance - and they last for me. I had a pair of addidas a few years ago, bought from big fashion-athletic store, and after a few months all they were good for was riding a bike. I fell for their cool three stripe look. My arches are so high that when I walk on the beach the footprints I leave behind are nothing but toes, ball of foot and heel. If the salesperson doesn't make me walk for them and assess whatever the hell I'm doing with it, then I ain't buying. I am paying your crazy markup, watch me pronate, assess my knee bending, evaluate my hip elevation! I don't know; it seems to work.

I've only heard bad, painful stories about orthotics.
Sometimes I wish I could wear chucks, but it will never work.
Sketchers are totally overrated and pretty ugly in a teenagers-will-buy-anything kind of way.
I want more pockets on my runners. And for more shoes to come with matching sweatbands.
That was verbose.

this anti-new balance talk is MADNESS.

first of all, i am assuming everyone who is not a jogger or runner is talking about NB classics, right? the 576 and 574 and stuff? well, you all realize that the 570s are from the early 80s and stuff? have you ever tried jogging in a "technical" sneaker from the early 80s, like adidas micropacers or something? well, i'm sure you'd quit your bellyaching abt how much the NBs suck if you did.

also, as many people have pointed out, NB make their shoes in an insane variety of specialized widths and fits - they go at least six different widths for most of their shoes! so if you are having trouble running in a NB shoe, it's probably because you bought the wrong one!

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 03:11 (twenty years ago)

in short:

New Balance are awesome. Totally classic. See vahid.

Dunks are great. So are Air Force 1's. White only. Ever.

The correct answer are Chuck Taylors. Non functional, not all that comfortable, flat as hell, canvas, cheap looking as fuck, yet a solid NB will cost less. Time passed it by 30 years ago. Let it stay there.

OTOH alan very OTM about chuck taylors - you will note that there are many many skate companies making functional copies of chuck taylors that actually have useful things like arches and durable foxing and so on - see the "gravis lowdown" for one example.

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 03:32 (twenty years ago)

Thankfully I don't anyone would try to play sports or run long distance in chuck taylors. They might as well dig a grave for their ankles.
I'm curious about this Mizuno business. Is this like going from a high-end Toyota to a Benz? Or a Ferrari? Are there levels of "technical" running shoe most people know nothing about? Oh, I think there must be, probably involving making molds of one's foot and then sending the mold into space and back again.
well, xpost.

I used to use New Balance to jog. For me, they work great. Now, I wear them to the gym. Though my next athletic shoe will perhaps be Saucony. I've never tried that one before. When I bought these new New Balances, the sales girl tried to get me to buy cross-trainers. For me, those are the real overrated shoes, Real jogging shoes and cross-trainers and the like. I prefer the low-tech versions.

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 03:42 (twenty years ago)

I wear New Balances to work during the summer. They're ugly but functional, though really not all that comfortable.

The appeal of Chucks goes back to when they were $15/pair (that was in the late '90s) rather than $40 now. Simple, thin enough to wear with any jeans, and most importantly cheap. Now they're as expensive as any other sneakers and mostly come in butt-ugly flashy designs.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 03:43 (twenty years ago)

xpost: gravis are amazing shoes but the trick is that for whatever reason for every 10 designs in any given season, 7 are amazingly ugly, 2 are nice and 1 is a slept-on grower that you wake up a year or so later and go "holy shit! why didn't i buy that shit on sale when i had the chance!" (see: the lokash in dune)

gravis shoes that will change your life:

kingpins (i wore a pair to work practically every day for two years, then spent a year biking 100 miles/wk in them, finally had to give them up for everyday wear, because the midsoles are cracked and are seperating from the upper - but i still wear them dancing, because they are just the most comfy shoes i have ever owned)

comet (i spun out trying to make a turn at like 20 mph down a hill on a skateboard, flipped off the board, landed on one foot, skipped and rolled to a stop - i didn't break or tweak my ankle at all even though i was wearing these unlaced - unbelievable ankle support)

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 03:46 (twenty years ago)

I've only heard bad, painful stories about orthotics.

For someone like me who was born with really misaligned leg and hip bones, orthotics are essential. Without them, Im in tremendous foot, knee and hip pain within hours. I can't stand up at gigs for very long, and I could never have a job where I was on my feet all day.

Orthotics are really well made now days - soft and cushioned with shock absorbency, precision designed for the individual foot and gait, and you can get them slim and small enough to put into dress shoes (my current pair wont fit into much but boots n sneakers but I have had them 14 years now.)

and they're so cheap that i was ready to stock up and wear them for life. but i got bored and bought a pair of new balance 574 and those fuckers cramped my damn toes for a week. i knew the next size up was too big so i gave it time and they fit perfectly now. i forget theyre on my feet almost. the only thing i would change is the big goddamn 'N' on both sides. they should make it smaller like it is on their other styles

also, might be heresy but as much as i like the classic vans look, they are right down there w/ chuck taylors in shitty flatassed-sole overrated footwear.

Bidfurd, Wednesday, 17 August 2005 09:20 (twenty years ago)

Ooh what an intereting thread, although some clarification should have been made with regards to function or fashion (for want of a better word)!

Most overrated sneakers would have to be all white reebok classics. I mean, they appeal to the masses in a "pub shoe" capacity, why? They are dull, dull, dull. What's wrong with a bit of colour?
With regards to the trainer world, the most overrated shoes are undoubtedly Nike SBs. Some releases deserve the hype, but with Nike having cottoned on to this their quality control is going down the pan. The release of the Wonkas, being a prime example. Still, if you get caught up on the hype train, if you are not "linked" or are in the right place at the right time, you're just not going to get them. I am a massive fan of dunks, always have been, but unless a general release dunk is exciting I'm not going there. I prefer my shoes to be a little bit different, not exclusive per se, just different to a load of kids standing around in the local shopping mall. I mean, why do so many people wear only white trainers all of the time? And why do you need to wear your trainers until they fall off your feet? You are allowed to have more than one pair you know?!
Also, why the NB hate? Many, many fantastic shoes in some really interesting colourways. Good to see the Gravis love, but what you saying about so many being ugly? Most recent Gravis releases displays some lovely shoes.
I guess it's all about personal opinions though...

I like clean white trainers - when they get dirty they upset me.

ALL skateboarding trainers are depressingly ugly, but at least they have a specific function that I presume largely determines their shape.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 11:49 (twenty years ago)

Not all SB trainers are ugly at all, plus a lot of SB trainers are notoriously rubbish for skating in!

Funny no one has mentioned the terrible stench of Keds, which were the default sneaker when I was a kid back in the day. Why did they amplify natural foot aroma that way? Chucks are similar. The cushier shoes must have some kind of baking-soda layer in there. Not that they don't get that catpiss smell after a while. But the keds got it RIGHT AWAY.

From Nike, I prefer Terra Humara Classics which aren't as fetishized as much as Dunks but still have a great design/style being pumped up (okay, there are 3 camo versions including a B'Ape but I stayed far away).

most currently overrated shoe: GOLA. holy fuck, could a shoe get any uglier??

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 17:25 (twenty years ago)

ALL skateboarding trainers are depressingly ugly, but at least they have a specific function that I presume largely determines their shape.

I like skating sneaks! Although I tried a pair on (globe i think?) and they were surprisingly uncomfortable too. I'm sure it varies a lot by brand and model though.

I am wearing these, except in all-black with a yellow inner-air-sole and gum soles. They are fucking beautiful.

-- Sick Mouthy

I haven't liked Nikes in general for a while, but those are really nice.

OMG NEW BALANCE ARE SO GREAT

totally brainwashed (gcannon), Sunday, 28 August 2005 02:09 (twenty years ago)

no really. i had a pair of simples that i wore constantly until i took a vacation to DC. within half a day i had blisters like i'd been strolling around on a griddle. pentagon city mall foot locker, maroon NBs a half size bigger than a usually get, boom. the blisters didn't even hurt much for the rest of the week. they're only a little bit worn out at that was two years ago. and they're maroon!! totally great shoes, fuck you if you say differnt

geoff (gcannon), Sunday, 28 August 2005 02:13 (twenty years ago)

do i buy these

or these

ostrich leather or melton wool?

bold statement in favor of function or bold statement against function?

these are my new sneakers, which i like because they are plain and have velcro, but i run in sauconys.

those are some hot non-plain sneakers up there though.

Maria (Maria), Sunday, 28 August 2005 02:22 (twenty years ago)

xpost haha I had been walking around London for a week in sandals and finally I was all "I CAN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE DEAR LORD I NEED SHOOOOES" so I almost picked a pair of grey and white Adidas, but they just weren't as comfy as those NBs.

Poppy (poppy), Sunday, 28 August 2005 02:25 (twenty years ago)

I've found Sacconys to be pretty comfy (as compared to NB's) but Bob's (local chain) only has women's Sacconys WTF.

I just bought these today:

New Balance shoes are awesome. I have square toes and a really high instep, and they're pretty much the only thing that fit me well. My last six pairs of sneakers have all been New Balance, including one style of running shoe that I bought three times in a row for cross country until they stopped making it.

-- Rock Hardy (crump...), September 7th, 2005.

the last pair i had a few years ago were one of the most comfortable pairs of shoes i've ever had! but that might be because of my huge ankles.

lol @ sneaker beef, it continues here The sweet demure girl I managed to chat up last week appears to have turned into a SCARY HARRIDAN

gershy, Saturday, 10 November 2007 06:49 (eighteen years ago)

i liked my old pair of new balance, those new "fashion" ones that they're trying to sell to suckers for $300+ are some bullshit though.

haitch, Saturday, 10 November 2007 10:24 (eighteen years ago)

New Balances are incredibly ugly.

The Reverend, Saturday, 10 November 2007 11:46 (eighteen years ago)

Adidas Universal's and Air Force 1's rock every other sneaker out the boat

Adidas Samba's are nice but don't do it like the Universal's. My pair is wasted though, gotta find a new pair but it's hard

L.A. Gear, Troop, never did it for me, ugh

rizzx, Saturday, 10 November 2007 12:30 (eighteen years ago)

For me, I wear Superstars and Air Force 1s and sometimes the skate versions thereof.

The Reverend, Saturday, 10 November 2007 12:41 (eighteen years ago)

sambas are so good but very hard to get out here.

asics tigers are so uncomfortable though, very thin soles

rizzx, Saturday, 10 November 2007 18:54 (eighteen years ago)

im digging these creative recreation shoes lately

they make nice shoes in a variety of colors that still look pretty tasteful i think

deej, Saturday, 10 November 2007 18:57 (eighteen years ago)

those look cool

yeah i like how tigers look but thin soles and me don't get along - i am a walker. cool looking shoes for walking in though are few are far between :/

rrrobyn, Saturday, 10 November 2007 19:01 (eighteen years ago)

i am jonesing for the yo mtv raps pumas, esp the mc shan sneakers with the brooklyn bridge embroidered in gold on the heels.

stevie, Saturday, 10 November 2007 19:08 (eighteen years ago)

Chucks are the most overrated. Fudge that noize!

I like yr avg NB 578, and I've had luck around here consistently finding them on clearance for $20.

Been ye3arning for some Adidas Goodyears for years (tire co./shoe co. crossover wtf? but they seem v comfy for walking). However they are always $60-80. I hate paying more than $20 for anything clothes.
