hi. i'm sick of all the t.o. and randy talk, it's stupid and racist. let's talk about other important things about NFL football.

also: hit me up at expresso2222 @ gmail.com if you want to be part of my family/friends NFL fantasy league (and lose to my 7-year-old son) again.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Sunday, 21 August 2005 15:21 (twenty years ago)

also: tom brady is, quite frankly, NOT all you really need. no repeat for patriots this year.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Sunday, 21 August 2005 15:21 (twenty years ago)

I'm drafting Kevin Millar w/ my #1 pick.

David R. (popshots75`), Sunday, 21 August 2005 15:23 (twenty years ago)

i'm taking shane graham at kicker. quite frankly that's all i need.

j blount (papa la bas), Sunday, 21 August 2005 16:35 (twenty years ago)

my #1 pick will be SHOCK'N Y'ALL

Haikunym (Haikunym), Sunday, 21 August 2005 16:41 (twenty years ago)

my predix right now today only maybe

afc east - pats
afc north - bengals
afc south - colts
afc west - raiders
afc wc's - ravens, jets

nfc east - cowboys
nfc north - lions
nfc south - falcons
nfc west - cardinals
nfc wc's - panthers, eagles

j blount (papa la bas), Sunday, 21 August 2005 16:43 (twenty years ago)

No way do the Cowboys win the division. Their O-line is a mess, Bledsoe has Tiny Tim's legs, the defense is still shaky.

I doubt they finish better than 8-8, maybe 9-7 if they're lucky.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Sunday, 21 August 2005 16:49 (twenty years ago)

Panthers all the way. ALL THE WAY.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Sunday, 21 August 2005 16:50 (twenty years ago)

10-6 wins that division! 9-7 might!

im just upset because the fucking redskins are gonna be absolute shite this year (not different from the previous few years, but still)

JD from CDepot, Sunday, 21 August 2005 20:35 (twenty years ago)

haha, i cherish this--also the incredible amount of hand-wringing in the dc media

mookieproof (mookieproof), Sunday, 21 August 2005 20:39 (twenty years ago)

joey harrington is still very very cute

phil-two (phil-two), Sunday, 21 August 2005 22:15 (twenty years ago)

other than that, i dont think i know enough about nfl anymore to do anything except bling guessing on draft day.

phil-two (phil-two), Sunday, 21 August 2005 22:20 (twenty years ago)

On paper, at least, looks like the deepest RB pool in years.

rogermexico (rogermexico), Sunday, 21 August 2005 22:28 (twenty years ago)

On paper, it looks like the deepest RB pool in years.

rogermexico (rogermexico), Sunday, 21 August 2005 22:30 (twenty years ago)

phil (and everyone) we'd love to have you in our league, blind guessing or freaky obsessive internet hunting or whatever

follow the instructions

also: harrington is indeed cute but he has no offensive system to speak of and an annoying tendency to throw garbage interceptions; fine piano player though

Haikunym (Haikunym), Sunday, 21 August 2005 23:24 (twenty years ago)

Dude, Harrington's been 14/15 for 146 yards with no interceptions in the two pre-season games! Over 10 yards/pass avg! He will lead the Leos to the promised land this year. Home field advantage in the Super Bowl, baby.

Did anybody else see Braylon Edwards's catch yesterday to give the Brown the win over my beloved Lion? WOW! Picking up right where he left off in the maize & blue...

Stormy Davis (diamond), Sunday, 21 August 2005 23:41 (twenty years ago)

OMG Stormee, you are high, Harrington had a good first game last year too and look JUST LOOK WHAT HAPPENED

and I'm a Duck fan so you know I want him to succeed. still though. you are CURSED BY MATT MILLEN'S MOUSTACHIOS.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Sunday, 21 August 2005 23:48 (twenty years ago)

Ah those glory days of preseason. JP Losman's looking pretty good too!

If anyone leads the Leos to glory it'll be Kevin Jones. It'll help if Charles Rogers plays ball for more than 24 minutes.

But the Curse Of Wayne Fontes is strong, very strong.

rogermexico (rogermexico), Sunday, 21 August 2005 23:48 (twenty years ago)

Th' Panthers? Really?
I like the Jets this year as a team I can pay attention to, maybe even to go somewhat deep.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 22 August 2005 06:21 (twenty years ago)

oh no!!! im going to be at a convention in las vegas during the live draft!!! hm, maybe i can sneak away to the press-room to use their computers. maybe they get mad and revoke my press pass if they see me doing fantasy football instead of submitting stories and shit. ugggh.

joey harrington #1!

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 05:37 (twenty years ago)

Phil just pre-rank! It's all about the waiver wire anyway. Except, of course, for the first four rounds. Anyway, people who can't be at the live draft always end up with the best draft order -- it's voodoo!

Haikunym (Haikunym), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 12:21 (twenty years ago)

Troy Murphy #2!

Leeeeeeee (Leee), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 02:30 (twenty years ago)

Here's how I made out in my draft (picking 7th of 12).

I'm not feeling particularly cocky about it, but I don't have that pit-of-the-stomach feeling I usually have either. Only real misstep was letting Jermaine Wiggins slip to the final round and then watching him get snapped up one pick ahead of me. Doh!

RB1: Willis McGahee
RB2: Curtis Martin
WR1: Reggie Wayne
WR2: Isaac Bruce
TE: Dallas Clark
QB: Brett Favre
DST: Pittsburgh
K: Jeff Wilkins

RES: Carnell "Cadillac" Williams
RES: Derrick Blaylock
RES: Ricky Williams
RES: Eric Moulds
RES: Charles Rogers
RES: Matt Hasselbeck

so old!

mookieproof (mookieproof), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 19:45 (twenty years ago)

I've been following football for over twenty years and looking at this season, I have no idea who is going to be really good. I could see almost every team in the entire league finishing between 6-10 and 10-6.

I grew up following the Bears, Bengals and Colts and just would like to see either or all of them do well. I'd like to think this is the Colts year, but they are already pretty banged up and it is hard to tell from pre-season how they will be. The Bengals should be pretty good this year, but going from pre-season they still haven't solved their run defense problems. The Bears offense, as usual is a complete and total mess. Being that I saw him play at Purdue quite a few times, I think Kyle Horton could end up a better NFL QB than some expect, but he is getting thrown to the wolves having to start out of the gate as a rookie.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Sunday, 4 September 2005 19:58 (twenty years ago)

the lions on monday night was the most pathetic performance ever. at least wayne led them to the playoffs where inevitably they would be unprepared and get shellaced but is anyone sure that Mariucci can coach? I was saying last year that the lions should draft Kyle Orton, purdue quarterbacks always outperform expectations. now they need to lose all of their games and draft either lynart or chris leak or swing a trade for bradlee van pelt and then ship Joey to the montreal alouettes.

keith m (keithmcl), Sunday, 4 September 2005 22:41 (twenty years ago)

Can someone explain me the subtle differences between the 3-4 and the 4-3? Doesn't the 3-4 still have 4 guys on the line usually?

Oh and as long as I'm logged out... um, you guys stink. You guys think you're so big. I say poo. Get your heads out of your poopers laugh out loud oh my god what the eff.

loggedout (Leee), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 21:23 (twenty years ago)

here's what i got in my private fantasy league, despite not being present for the draft:

QB Tom Brady, NE
RB Priest Holmes, KC
RB/WR Thomas Jones, Chi
WR Plaxico Burress, NYG
WR Keary Colbert, Car
TE Alge Crumpler, Atl
D/ST Panthers D/ST, Car
K Adam Vinatieri, NE

BENCH
Carnell Williams, TB RB
Julius Jones, Dal RB
Tatum Bell, Den RB
DeShaun Foster, Car RB
Aaron Brooks, NO QB
Amani Toomer, NYG WR
Brandon Stokley, Ind WR
Braylon Edwards, Cle WR

this is my first time ever doing a fantasy football league. i guess i lucked out draft-wise?

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 22:05 (twenty years ago)

You lucked out draft-wise. This is in fact often the case when you're not there and someone picks for you. More objective "best available" selections, fewer homer or "I just got a feelin'" reaches.

You're strong at RB, and might want to start JJ over TJ (though TJ is always capable of monster games, especially in the first third of the season and before Cedric Benson comes on.)

So you can afford to wait and see how Carnell Williams comes on, and keep your fingers crossed that Tatum Bell wins the starting job by midseason.

WR is a little dicier. You're depending on Eli Manning to set the table for you. Keep a close eye on Braylon Edwards and watch the waiver wire and free agent pool closely - you can count on a few unexpected wideouts emerging every year.

rogermexico (rogermexico), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 22:54 (twenty years ago)

yeah julius jones should be a monster this year, priest will own all long enough for you to know how good cadillac is gonna be. i'd try hard to get my hands on larry johnson too, there's a slight chance he's on your waiver wire. your receivers could be stronger but that's easiest position to fill in easily, esp since you only start two (unless you somehow end up with moss, owens, and harrison on yr team don't ever use that rb/wr slot on a wr). brady is a very solid starter, aaron brooks flaws don't matter in fantasy - he could have weeks where he's a top 3 qb.

j blount (papa la bas), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 23:05 (twenty years ago)

There's nothing more sentimental than a fan, and like many I'll be rooting for the 'aints to find inspiration in tragedy and have themselves a monster season.

I suspect, though, that the chaos of makeshift facilities and constant travel and the loss of the "twelfth man" (bagged or otherwise) may make it hard on them. If you get docked points for picks, Brooks may be a white-knuckler. But then, there's usually a decent QB or two to be found by midseason. I picked up Drew Brees to back up Trent Green last year and that worked out pretty well.

rogermexico (rogermexico), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 23:27 (twenty years ago)

i remember one year i managed to pick up mike anderson, brian griese, jeff garcia, and terrell owens off the waiver wire, the first three having career years. still fell in the championship game to a dude loaded up with rams back when they were the greatest show on turf.

one question re: ilx/cibuli league that someone might be able to answer - positional defensive players: what's the strat cw? last year i remember grabbing champ bailey partly cuz i luvs him homerish reasons but also on 'i need a db - i will grab the best' and then figuring out/remembering that the best corners /= most ints cuz people don't challenge them usually. i think i've figured out it's better to use your db slots on safetys instead of corners but someone might show me the error of my ways there. few fantasy leagues have individ defensive players so i really haven't come across any even rudimentary cw regarding them fantasywise.

j blount (papa la bas), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 23:43 (twenty years ago)

one of my league dudes has offered a trade for larry johnson, i'm not convinced.

i am so wearing my aints shirt every sunday thise season.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 23:43 (twenty years ago)

o shit dude's lurking man

j blount (papa la bas), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 23:50 (twenty years ago)

huh?

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 23:53 (twenty years ago)

"purdue quarterbacks always outperform expectations."

Mark Herrmann was a first round bust, but the Broncos got John Elway in a trade for him and a couple of other draft choices. It isn't like the Colts had a chance of keeping Elway, so they got what they could. With one of those draft picks the Colts did pretty good, as it was for Chris Hinton, who was an Allpro OT. But then the Colts traded Hinton, Andre Rison and another first round pick (#3) in a second stupid trade for Jeff George. At least for the Colts sake, the Falcons made a horrible pick with that choice draft slot.

I'm just glad the Colts didn't listen to the many of the sports talking heads who were saying to take Ryan Leaf over Peyton Manning. Everytime you see the bulletproof hair of Mel Kiper or listen to sports talk smack master Jim Rome, remember that both had Leaf rated way over Manning and gave the Colts some guff for their draft choice.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 00:57 (twenty years ago)

Everytime you see the bulletproof hair of Mel Kiper or listen to sports talk smack master Jim Rome, remember that both had Leaf rated way over Manning and gave the Colts some guff for their draft choice.

About two days after the NFL draft this year, I thought it would be fun to go back to look at Kiper mock drafts from years past. Hey, how bizarre, they were no longer in the archive! How odd. About a week later I tried to look at Kiper's mock draft from THIS YEAR'S mock... and the pages (which I still had in my surf history) were empty!

I think the last thing Kiper wants is to be held accountable for his bullshit analysis. He's certainly been right about stuff from time to time, but a broken clock / twice a day / etc.

Football analysts in general are full of crap, the only guys that can pick games with any regularity are usually the stand up comedians. The only guy on ESPN that I don't mind is Ron Jaworski and that is when he is taking apart film on the NFL Matchup show, the rest of them make me crazy.

What is worse is ESPN nicked the idea for that segment from Fox.

most painful thing ever - when one of the all-heart/no-logic football (or basketball, aka Dick V) guys starts talking about baseball and sounds like John Kruk's retarded cousin.

Who the hell is Mel Kiper? My mailman knows more about the draft than he does.

Football analysts in general are full of crap, the only guys that can pick games with any regularity are usually the stand up comedians.

and Phil Mickelson! and Hank Stram, RIP.

Corso is semi-coherent and entertaining on the pregame shows and roundups, even if he is a Big Ten hater, but I swear to god he always sounds half in the bag whenever those guys call a game. ESPECIALLY by the 4th quarter, he totally gets progressively more incoherent and rambling..

Dude, holy crap my auto-picked team is incredible!

Yay Lions! Detroit breaks a streak of 77 straight games in which the Pack has scored a TD. Joey H looked good enough to get the job done this year.

I'm out of my survivor pool ALREADY!! I had two entries in this league. Top prize is 20 large! I took Denver and St. Louis and I am OUT. Jesus, how disappointing.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 12 September 2005 00:42 (twenty years ago)

the broncos performance today was positively lionsesque.

keith m (keithmcl), Monday, 12 September 2005 00:59 (twenty years ago)

The Colts and Bengals both looked good in their opener with both teams defense looking improved. Indy's defense is now flat out fast and their defense is actually pretty nicked up with a couple of starters not playing. It is hard to tell how good the Bengals are going to be, as the Browns seem like they are going to be as bad as last season. Carson Palmer was really on his game until the fourth quarter when he had a fumble and an interception, neither of which hurt the Bengals.

The Ravens are better off now that Kyle Boller is injured. Wright led them to the playoffs two years ago having two or three really big passing games with one really crazy game against Seattle where there was like nearly 100 total points scored, but then their supergenius coach benched him to start a rookie the next season. Personally, I would not mind seeing the Ravens not win a game, as their coach is a major dork. I still think the Ravens will be better with Wright at QB than Boller.

I hope Brett Favre steps up and helps Javon Walker out with some cash, 'cuz that "DON'T HOLD OUT FOR THE SAKE OF THE TEAM" thing worked out pretty damn well.

Fuck-a-Favre.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Monday, 12 September 2005 22:54 (twenty years ago)

Milozauckerman, what the HELL are you talking about?

Haikunym (Haikunym), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 00:20 (twenty years ago)

Javon Walker isn't getting paid his value. Threatens to hold out to get some up-front money.
Brett Favre goes to the press and shills for management, brow-beating Walker into showing up.
Javon Walker blows out his ACL in the first half, will miss this entire season and his market value now approaches zero (ACLs take two years to come back and there's no 'good as new' guarantee at a speed position).

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 00:25 (twenty years ago)

OR:
Javon Walker is making lots and lots of money, but wants more.
Brett Favre wants his top receiver in camp, and says so.
Javon Walker realizes he isn't going to get more money, comes back to the team, and then IN A COMPLETELY UNRELATED FREAK INCIDENT THAT HAS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH BRETT FAVRE OR THE INTERNATIONAL CONSPIRACY OF EVIL CAPITALISTS VS. GOOD OLD SALT OF THE EARTH PROLETARIAN WIDE RECEIVERS WHO ONLY WANT RESPECT AND DON'T REALLY CARE ABOUT MONEY AT ALL gets unfortunately and badly hurt.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 00:34 (twenty years ago)

I didn't say it was Favre's fault - but this incident is precisely why Walker wanted to hold out and receive fair value. Having the team Godfather start weighing in tends to hurt your chances of a successful negotiation with management.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 00:36 (twenty years ago)

So he should have been a man and held out for longer, maybe all season if he felt he needed to. You're right about this: he never would have been hurt if he was still holding out.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 00:39 (twenty years ago)

And Brett Favre should have kept out of it, rather than working for management, yes.

Football players have the worst union of any professional sport (and the worst power relationship with management)(except for hockey these days, I guess, but that ain't major) for precisely this kind of thing. Favre's barely better than a scab to me.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 00:42 (twenty years ago)

Oh my goodness, dude, you really are blaming Brett Favre for Walker's injury, and for the NFL's management/player power relationship. Okay, I understand now that this line of argument won't go anywhere, because Marxists just always assume that anyone who doesn't agree just doesn't see the real truth of the situation. I know this, I'm pretty Marxist myself. But just because I think you're way off base here doesn't mean I care enough to waste time trying to undo your entire mindset.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 00:47 (twenty years ago)

Brett Favre giving Walker money was rhetorical sarcasm. The point is that he shouldn't have taken management's side against another player's interests. That was true before the injury, the ACL tear just makes it stick out a bit more.

Favre's actions are symptomatic of the union's weaknesses, yes.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 00:53 (twenty years ago)

1. The history of the NFL is a history of class struggle.
2. Anyone who does not automatically take the side of another player must be put in gulag.
3. These stupid millionaire athletes do not know much about football or money, not like us.

can someone please explain why of all north american professional sports, football is the one without guaranteed contracts? because pete rozelle was an evil genius...?

mookieproof (mookieproof), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 02:48 (twenty years ago)

Football players get injured more often, teams don't want to get stuck paying for injured players, the union and players are too weak to push for guaranteed contracts (teams would rather lose, since losing NFL teams remain profitable, rather than give in on something that major).

The teams could offer shorter-term contracts but salaries would probably increase and teams also like being able to shuffle their rosters at any time with little or nothing in the way of monetary consequences (unless they shelled out a huge signing bonus).

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 02:52 (twenty years ago)

i have to think that the players' union has the clout to do it. but i'm sure gene upshaw has his, um, reasons...

mookieproof (mookieproof), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 02:56 (twenty years ago)

I don't think the NFLPA has enough clout to do much of anything. The owners broke the union once - it would only take a couple of superstars crossing over to do it again.

They've got a system that works out incredibly well for the NFL and upper-echelon players, and no one in the media or public is going to protest that lesser players can get a raw deal (ie cut at any time, cut when injured, forced to play injured rather than get cut - cf. Jacob Rogers of der Cowboys) when they do make good money.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 02:59 (twenty years ago)

I don't even necessarily support guaranteed contracts for football - injuries are part of the game, and guaranteeing contracts make the situation very sticky for everyone involved. It's one thing for a baseball or basketball player to go down - injuries are sufficiently rare that teams can get insurance to cover the salaries. No way that happens in football.

But teams and the media have to stop playing the "you signed a contract, play" card when someone tries to hold out for more guaranteed money. That's all they can count on, their careers can be over at any moment. Players need to be supportive of each other (both as a union and individually - and most are, the fuckers like Favre excluded), as their number might be up next.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 23:00 (twenty years ago)

Buffalo, Miami, Tampa Bay: three teams that shut down the run in Week 1, three teams my running backs are going up against in Week 2. Which backs do y'all think will have the least sucky outings?

rogermexico (rogermexico), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 23:28 (twenty years ago)

That is a tough one. Buffalo's D was good last year, so I don't think last week was a fluke. Tampa ran up some yards on Minnesota, which haven't been able to stop diddley for a couple of years. I think the Bills will be much sterner comp for the Bucs running game.

Miami's D was not as bad last year as the numbers show, as their
offense went 3 and out so much. On paper, the Jets should have the best passing attack out of those teams, which often times opens up the running game. The Jets also got so far behind to KC, they were throwing a lot of passes (44) to only (20) rushes. They might be a bit more balenced in this game.

I'd probably start your guy from Buffalo. Even though the Bucs completely shut down the Vikings run attack, they also had a built up a lead and it does not appear Minnesota even tried to run the ball once they got behind. The Vik backs only had 12 carries, while they threw the ball 33 times and Culpepper had 4 carries, which might have been pass plays. I think Buffalo's D will keep the game close and being that the Bills have a young QB, they won't be so quick to abandon the running game.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 23:56 (twenty years ago)

More or less what I'm thinking - but I'm a Buffalo fan, so I'm trying to temper those homer tendencies. And no way the Jets can come down with a two-week case of acute fumbleitis, right? Cadillac's going to have more good games though.

I say this every season, but damn! this is going to be a great season!

rogermexico (rogermexico), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 00:50 (twenty years ago)

hows, oh shit i forgot his name. the really hot FB that went to purdue that i think is doing ok in the NFL maybe playing for tampa bay? i think it was purdue anyway. anyhow, how's he doing this year so far?

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 01:19 (twenty years ago)

Mike Alstott? Dude is the Old Man Of Tampa, beloved and past his prime. He'll see some action, but it's not his team anymore. Maybe not since the lightning-and-thunder days with Warrick Dunn.

rogermexico (rogermexico), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 01:21 (twenty years ago)

yes thats it! but i just image googled him and hes definitely not so hot. maybe back when he was 21. oh well.

i have a warrick dunn florida state starter jersey!!!

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 01:26 (twenty years ago)

Yay Donovan! Finally!

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 19 September 2005 02:04 (twenty years ago)

Well bunches of talking heads have been proven wrong about the Jets and Cardinals. Arizona is as terrible as ever and probably will only play decent once they are completely out of playoff contention and they win a couple of trap games against a playoff contender from the NFC East or Central. The Jets have already called their QB Vinny from the old black book, which is never good. Don Strock was a backup QB at age 42, but he never saw the field because of Marino.

The Bills also lost Takeo Spikes and the Pats Rodney Harrison for the season. Both of them are really good players, but there respected defenses might be able to absorb the loss.

Denver has played well the past couple of weeks. I figured they would be pretty good, no matter how bad they looked in the first game.

The same twerps that were saying Denver was done in week one were also the ones saying the Chargers should bench Drew Brees. Criminy the Chargers barely lost their first two games, and both of them were because of dumb penaltys and one because their punter blew two punts putting the Cowboys in great field position. LT is freaking awesome, he reminds me of Walter Payton when he runs, with all of the side stepping.

Cinci is looking for real and Carson Palmer is turning into an elite QB (other than the fumbles). They play the Jaguars in two weeks, which should be their first real test. That game will be a slug fest, as Jacksonville's D is a nasty pipe hitting crew. Kyle Orton looked like a 15 year old against Cinci last week, what a terrible game and the Bears had no choice but to leave him out there to look stupid.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 06:22 (twenty years ago)

So, Ben Roethlisberger...

...might be screwed.

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 17:13 (twenty years ago)

Did you switch from MLB to MNF? Dude that was warped shit what his knee did.

Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 17:14 (twenty years ago)

Roethlisberger! ohno! I only watched the first half. How bad was it?

dar1a g (daria g), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 17:16 (twenty years ago)

Well supposedly he's "maybe ok" for next week! But his knee bent the wrong direction--I mean I dunno if that was "ok" looking, I think the Steelers are trying to downplay things. OTOH he did walk to the sidelines of his own volition (mostly) which is pretty good. But then got hauled off by cart 2 minutes later anyway.

It LOOKED really awful. Hyperextension and severe bone bruising, apparently.

Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 17:18 (twenty years ago)

LaDanian Tomlinson--my favorite non-Chicago football player--has already thrown for a touchdown pass, received a touchdown pass, and rushed for a touchdown pass today.

The Bears smoked the Vikes 28-3.

Carson Palmer tied Peyton Manning's NFL record with his ninth consecutive game with a rating of over 100.

gear (gear), Sunday, 16 October 2005 21:25 (twenty years ago)

This year is "Fate, fuck the Saints" year. Katrina destroys their home, my main Ole Miss man Deuce McAllister gets his knee blown (apparently right after Jim Haslett attempts to make a substitution to get him out of a runaway game), and the refs hand the Falcons the game today with :02 left.

William Paper Scissors (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 16 October 2005 21:32 (twenty years ago)

Marshall Faulk returns to Indy tonight to play the Colts for the first time since he was traded eight years ago. I'd like all of the pundits who said the Colts were foolish for trading him to note how well Edge is still playing while Faulk sits on the bench. Those same pundits that were saying "Faulk is the best running back ever" a few years ago did not know or remember Faulk not blocking and letting some blitzers tattoo a then rookie Peyton Manning, which is why the Colts shipped him out in the first place.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Monday, 17 October 2005 11:34 (twenty years ago)

What kind of nutjobs would ever say that about Marshall Faulk??? He's always been prima donna nonsense material.

Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Monday, 17 October 2005 13:27 (twenty years ago)

Back when the Rams were still hot sauce, there were quite a few people saying such nonsense. Faulk was very good, but when he was at his peak there was all sorts of talking heads calling him "the best all around back" of all time.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Monday, 17 October 2005 13:35 (twenty years ago)

faulk is old now. so what? running backs last for five seasons, he's been double that. and there's absolutely no way you can fuck with his 1,000-1,000 season. that's fucking SICK.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Monday, 17 October 2005 13:38 (twenty years ago)

my wife hates football, it bores her on tv and live (she grew up one block from u of wisconsin's stadium), but she will defend walter payton's pre-eminence among running backs with words, teeth, and fists if necessary

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Monday, 17 October 2005 16:29 (twenty years ago)

"best all around back of all time = sweetness"

I concur, which is why the talk about Faulk being the best all around back of all time really bristled with me. Faulk was a really good back and is probably a hall of famer, but I can't put him in that next category.

The same goes for Emmitt Smith, who was a very good back but even though he is the all time rushing leader, he is at best is a debatable #4 behind Jim Brown, Payton and Barry Sanders. I don't even think Smith was as dominating at his peak as Eric Dickerson, who was most explosive back raw speed wise that I remember seeing.

Earl Campbell also deserves some probs for being the most difficult runner to stop I have ever seen, when he started out it took gangs of people to bring him down. Sadly he is paying for that battering these days.

Walter Payton could do it all; he had the moves, the speed and could run someone over if it came to that. Thomlinson is the closest thing I have seen to someone like Payton. Faulk is a similar back, but I just cannot put him quite at the same level, more like a modern upgraded version of Tony Dorsett. Payton's recieving numbers would have been just as high if he played in the modern game.

earlnash, Monday, 17 October 2005 16:50 (twenty years ago)

Earl Campbell was pretty astonishing, if one-dimensional. I remember hearing an opposing coach once say, "There's really no way to stop him, so we just try to get four helmets on him every time he carries the ball--at least get him out of the league in seven years," which was more or less true.

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 17 October 2005 16:58 (twenty years ago)

Faulk (SDSU) and LT (Chargers) are the two best running backs who ever played in San Diego, so they're the two best running backs ever. I will not be swayed by pathetic things like logic.

3. Barry Sanders

I used to think this, but someone made a compelling argument against him to me. His best plays were phenomenal, but like Michael Vick, when he was off, he was REALLY off. He was the ultimate -2, -3, +1, +20, -5, -1, +15 back of all time. But no matter how high the highs, a great running back NEEDS to be able to give you three yards when it counts, and I'd rather have Payton, Smith, LT, Dickerson, Campbell, Faulk, Simpson in that case every time. I still think Sanders is better than Smith, but I can't rate him above Dickerson, Campbell or Sayers.

I will keep LT and Faulk out of the argument because I'm way biased.

Sanders like Payton should get some props for playing on teams that were so one dimensional AND still being able to rush for that many yards. Criminy, just look at Faulk when he was with the cruddy Colts compared to being on the Rams throwing for 4500+ yards and all those deep TDs. Sanders had the most madhouse moves of anyone, that guy was like a pinball.

Tom Brady is good and is beginning to border on great as QB, but by the credit people give him, Terry Bradshaw should be the greatest of ALL TIME.

Bradshaw was the QB on the greatest defensive team in history and by the time of their last win they had developed more into an offensive power. Bradshaw was really good, but was he a better QB than Dan Fouts? I find that hard to say as I only remember the ends of their careers.

I will say that Marino was better than Montana and Elway, as I saw those guys play. I will also say that Manning is way better than Brady. I'm still not sure Brady would even be Brady if Drew Bledsoe doesn't get hurt and gives him a chance. Tom Brady is a bit of the nu-Brett Farve for football talking heads i.e. "he plays the game the right way b.s." If the Pats win it all this year riding Brady's back to the bank, then we will talk...

And so far, the Raiders biggest problem with Moss has been his on-field performance, not anything else. Although that probably has something to do with the chump throwing the ball.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 17 October 2005 18:16 (twenty years ago)

the Vikings just aren't a very good team. Culpepper seems to be lost out there, which might have something to do with a weak offensive line or awful receiving corps or shit running game or the NFL's worst coach...or all of the above?

gear (gear), Monday, 17 October 2005 18:22 (twenty years ago)

The thing that I don't get: last year, when Moss was hurt, the Vikings still absolutely killed people on offense. Then, they added pieces on defense, and all of the sudden... they get WORSE in every phase of the game? I mean, what?

Anyway, Mike Tice sucks.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 17 October 2005 18:24 (twenty years ago)

But you can't deny the pencil behind the ear! It's totally Moss' fault.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 17 October 2005 18:26 (twenty years ago)

The thing that I don't get: last year, when Moss was hurt, the Vikings still absolutely killed people on offense.

Well, they've had some tough injuries (note: so have the Pats), and Culpepper's playing hurt (note: so's McNabb), and it's not unusual to look good for a game or two when you show opposing coaching staffs something other than what they prepared for (which is why well-rested and unscouted third-string RBs often get one Pro Bowl game filling in for injured starters).

Blah blah blah whatever. It's on Tice and the staff. I got the impression from yesterday's post-game QA that he'll be genuinely relieved when the axe falls.

rogermexico (rogermexico), Monday, 17 October 2005 19:33 (twenty years ago)

rogermexico (rogermexico), Monday, 17 October 2005 19:39 (twenty years ago)

Why do moribund/expansion franchises blow their big picks and bigger money on 'franchise' QBs? They drafted Carr, will pay him between 20 and 45 million over the length of his contract, so he could waste his first years getting nailed left and right and maybe never reach his potential. Is it just PR?

If I were leading a dead franchise, the franchise QB would be the last piece I'm looking for. Put together an offensive line to protect him and a strong defense, so he has a safety zone. (OK, sometimes that's still a failure, as with Baltimore/Boller, but he just sucks, and he wasn't a top-10 pick anyway). That works much better everywhere it's tried rather than the Carr/Harrington/Akili Smith/etc. school of letting 'em get ripped apart. Manning survived and prospered, but it's rare.

Are You Nomar? (miloaukerman), Monday, 17 October 2005 19:58 (twenty years ago)

dude any madden gm knows you gotta draft vick #1 and you can run for every third down. next you go w/ a solid wr and then the rest of the dudes you just trade away draft pix for!

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Monday, 17 October 2005 19:59 (twenty years ago)

I would rather trade a third rounder for like Jon Kitna than waste a first rounder on a quarterback or wide receiver. In the NFL, everything begins and ends with lineplay. If I can get D'Brickashaw, that's who I'm drafting, not Matt Leinert.

Also, Jams, your madden strategy is crazy. Vick is obviously the right choice, but wide receivers are like the last thing I grab. You gotta get a solid front seven on D and a good running back. Usually, it's best to skip the mid tier guys and get, like, some 75er who you *know* will project upwards and has 90+ speed and hands. But wideouts, all I look for is 90+ speed and good catch carry and don't worry about overpaying for the TOs of the world.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 17 October 2005 20:47 (twenty years ago)

oh you are totally correct, poly. i just like strutting with chad johnson for his 39th td in the third game of the year.

the qb position is incredibly overstressed in the draft, as the ravens circa 2002 made oh-so-clear. (and hello dallas cowboys 2k5!) kitna would make a GREAT starting qb on the right team. i've always liked the dude. i'm sure the skins will sign him to an eight year deal in 2008.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Monday, 17 October 2005 20:52 (twenty years ago)

weird Madden thing - I switched to Green Bay in 2017 or so after they had the worst record in the league. The halfback I created a few years earlier (super-speed and then I worked him up the rest of the way, I hate all the slow backs it generates) becomes a free agent, I overpay - and no matter what coaches I hire, how I change the gameplan, it insists on giving Green Bay's fullback more than half the carries. I've got an elite back running 12 times for 70 yards a game, but a slow blocking back running 24 times for 40 yards.

I could not, for the life of me, figure out how to fix it (aside from playing every game myself).

The other glitch was that even after winning a Super Bowl, I couldn't get mid-season attendance above 35%. Opening days and playoffs, 99% - mid-December 30%. I guess that was their sign that I needed to build a dome, but then I don't get my awesome snow-bowls.

Are You Nomar? (miloaukerman), Monday, 17 October 2005 20:54 (twenty years ago)

you should be able to fix it by going into coaching strategy. in there it will have a percentage rank of importance for each position player. make the fullback's stress from "running" to "blocking" and that *should* do it.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Monday, 17 October 2005 20:57 (twenty years ago)

ha, I didn't even realize those applied to in-game strategy. I thought they were for drafting/signing players on auto (scrambling v. pocket, etc.). I guess I should have looked at the book sometime in the last five or six years.

Madden, schmadden.

Featuring chop-blocks, substance abuse, NSFW cheerleaders, coach/owner meltdowns and (oh please oh please oh please) killer gameplay.

rogermexico (rogermexico), Monday, 17 October 2005 21:24 (twenty years ago)

You may have had some sort of power running set up. I find that being extra thorough with the depth charts (I usually fill up all the slots if possible prevents any weirdness.

The thing with stadium attendance... it seems like if you play the game yourself, people show up. If you don't, they won't. Which is why I've completely stopped using the Owner mode and stick with GM mode, which is all I care about anyway. The allure of setting drink prices wore off fast.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 17 October 2005 21:25 (twenty years ago)

and (oh please oh please oh please) killer gameplay.

I guess it's possible, but I doubt it. Madden's gameplay is ingrained in every fiber of my being.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 17 October 2005 21:25 (twenty years ago)

True. Learning a new game engine is always a drag, but I'm hoping they make it worth our while. I always enjoyed the hell out of the original NFL Blitz.

rogermexico (rogermexico), Monday, 17 October 2005 21:45 (twenty years ago)

Another impressive performance by Indy, but once again, they did it against an undermanned or inferior team (the former, in this case). I'm looking forward to seeing how they stack up with Denver, San Diego, Pittsburgh, Jacksonville, Cincy, etc.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 05:41 (twenty years ago)

Indy has beaten Jacksonville once this year and J-Ville has beaten both Cincy and Pittsburgh. The Colt/Jagular game was a rough and tough. The Colt D absolutely pounded Leftwich and I was impressed he kept going.

No one is really going to give the Colts much more respect until they put a beat down on the Patriots which is hopefully coming on 11/7.

Indy has NE, J-Ville, Pitts, Cinci, Seattle, SD and Tennessee (which is a tough game no matter what the Titans record may be) coming up in the second half.

earlnash, Tuesday, 18 October 2005 12:30 (twenty years ago)

did anyone else have the misfortune of watching that dallas-nyg game? probably the worst football i have seen in my entire life.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 12:41 (twenty years ago)

I guess it's a blessing Jams doesn't live in a market that was subjected to that Chicago / Viking tilt.

Didn't see it, but there was a classic Jets-Colt matchup in the early '80s that I'm sure could wear the crown (worst NFL I have seen in my entire life, that is). Ended in a low-scoring tie, after both teams missed field goals in overtime.

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 06:07 (twenty years ago)

(Actually, it wasn't the Jets-Colts that ended in a tie; could have been Giants-Cardinals. But the Jets-Colts was equally terrible, if a bit shorter.)

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 15:53 (twenty years ago)

Putting a beatdown on the Pats doesn't really have the same cache that it did in previous years.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 16:20 (twenty years ago)

Jets-Colts and Giants-Cardinals both sound like they have the makings of "worst game ever" in any year, and I LIKE the Giants.

I'm not obsessive, I just discuss this with people who don't care about it all the time. And think about it all the time.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Saturday, 22 October 2005 13:50 (twenty years ago)

Hello let's not talk about fantasy football for a minute!

Wow did you guys see the end of that Giants-Broncos game??? And where the fuck did Minnesota pull that kick out of their ass from?!

Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Monday, 24 October 2005 12:32 (twenty years ago)

Eli done growed up this year. He was as calm and confident in the last minute of that game as I've ever seen a QB.

I do feel guilty for getting any perverse amusement out of it (Rock Hardy), Monday, 24 October 2005 12:40 (twenty years ago)

Tom bitched that he threw his passes all too high a la Peyton but I argued that was more cos he was being hurried and hit right after release. He does look v good out there.

BILL PARCELLS PUNCHED A COACH

WHY IS NO ONE TALKING ABOUT THAT

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 24 October 2005 12:43 (twenty years ago)

"If Parcells had been nearly as aggressive with his offense as he was with receivers coach Todd Haley, then maybe this is a key road win instead of what will surely be the biggest second-guessing barrage Big Bill has faced since he's been in Irving.

"Haley got half-punched and half-shoved by Parcells because Haley interrupted a Parcells sideline tirade aimed at the officiating crew."

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 24 October 2005 12:45 (twenty years ago)

Half-punch & half-shove = FULL ON RUMBLE, yes?

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 24 October 2005 12:45 (twenty years ago)

BECAUSE I DIDN'T SEE THAT THAT OCCURRED!!! WHAT IN THE HOLY FUCK.

He's totally headed for a massive heart attack.

Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Monday, 24 October 2005 12:47 (twenty years ago)

There is absolutely no mention of this event anywhere on ESPN!

Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Monday, 24 October 2005 12:50 (twenty years ago)

Way to live up to the "Entertainment" portion of your name, Sports Leader!

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 24 October 2005 12:52 (twenty years ago)

Yesterday was all about teams giving away games. SD's special teams cost them another game yesterday in Philly. Eli Manning looked pretty sharp down the stretch.

I hate bad calls, but I really hate instant replay. It turns every borderline catch into the Zapruder film with having to listen the mic jockeys plead their case. The flow of the game gets completely out of wack. The early call in the Bengals game with Johnson in the end zone is a prime example. The call could have gone either way and it was called a TD at first. How anyone from that kind of footage can really decide "CONTROL" is beyond me. Did the ball hit the ground? No. If I want to watch Law and Order, I'll tune to that channel. Just make a call and don't take 25 minutes trying to figure out what actually happened. Criminy.

Parcells didn't slug the guy, he just kind of pushed him back. It looked pretty tame compared to some things I have seen coaches do with grabbing facemasks and the like. It was nothing compared to the June Jones vs. Jeff George rumble a few years back.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Monday, 24 October 2005 12:55 (twenty years ago)

Huh, it is odd not to have any mention of it in the game recap. (2xp)

I do feel guilty for getting any perverse amusement out of it (Rock Hardy), Monday, 24 October 2005 12:57 (twenty years ago)

By tomorrow, it'll be Parcells nibbling on the coach's ear.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 24 October 2005 13:09 (twenty years ago)

earl, totally agreed on the johnson catch. there should be a sub-rule of instant replay that if the play on the field was amazing in some sort of way it stands no questions asked. and contrast that with the RIDICULOUS call in that saints-rams game, where fucking ernie conwell was CRAWLING ON THE TURF ON HIS HANDS AND KNEES WITH LIKE TWO GUYS ON HIM AND SOME DUDE PLUCKS THE BALL FROM HIS HANDS LIKE IT'S A FUCKING DAISY AND THEY RULE IT A FUMBLE! WTF!

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Monday, 24 October 2005 13:10 (twenty years ago)

People bitch about instant replay but FFS at least Testaverde's reign of phantom touchdown terror has ended.

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/classic/obit/news/story?id=2203131

Manning later said he had been told by one of Mara's grandsons that the owner awakened in time to see the winning play, then smiled and went back to sleep.

...then someone else told Manning he was a dirty liar! But it's a nice idea anyway. RIP Mara!

Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 16:31 (twenty years ago)

Hi guys! How 'bout them Redskins?

Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Monday, 31 October 2005 14:59 (twenty years ago)

pfffffhahahahahaha

I do feel guilty for getting any perverse amusement out of it (Rock Hardy), Monday, 31 October 2005 15:02 (twenty years ago)

Tiki Barber got like double the yards on his own that all of the Redskins put together got! How does this happen? Besides the fact that the Redskins are slightly overrated this year but whatevs. Does anyone want to take up bets with me on how many years it will be before the Manning brothers play each other in the Super Bowl? How hard will the ESPN dudes jizz their pants when that happens?

Also what the hell happened to the Eagles, they seemed like they were making a game of it and then just kind of where like "Eh, forget about it."

Also shame on Tampa Bay, wtf?

Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Monday, 31 October 2005 15:09 (twenty years ago)

Special bonus also: Can it get any worse for the Vikings? That shit what happened to Culpepper looked nasty.

Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Monday, 31 October 2005 15:11 (twenty years ago)

"Also shame on Tampa Bay, wtf?"

I think their offense has gone back to 2000. How long till Shawn King gets put in at QB?

How about those Bears? When Lovie was letting the clock run out with two time outs left, I was like WTF. I suppose in hindsight he figured their defense probably did have as much chance of scoring as the offense in OT.

earlnash, Monday, 31 October 2005 15:53 (twenty years ago)

yeah Bears! they all laughed when I said they were gonna win the North, too. not that they're awesome, the north is the NL west of the NFL right now.

gear (gear), Monday, 31 October 2005 17:02 (twenty years ago)

Watching the Bears is a throw back to the late 80s with a great defense, a bit of a running game and not much at all in the passing game (like the Bears have ever had a passing game). After winning it all in 85, every year McMahon would get K-O'ed in week three by Alonzo Carreker and they would go with QB by committee. Criminy they had to start a rookie Doug Flutie in a playoff game.

The Bears D is legit and has been pretty good for a few years, it is just they got decimated by injuries last year with something like 8 or 9 starters ending up on IR.
