they fart

Dan I. (Dan I.), Sunday, 4 September 2005 07:16 (twenty years ago)

It's weird though how like some old cats look all old, with white hairs and they get too creaky to jump up on stuff, and other old cats might as well be only a couple years old for all they look and act.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Sunday, 4 September 2005 07:18 (twenty years ago)

Gentle! Whoa! The sweet dignity! Ahhhh...I am inundated with exclamation points.

elle michelin (ellmish), Sunday, 4 September 2005 07:25 (twenty years ago)

Time is kinder to some. From what I know, the orange-colored cat ages well. Maybe it's all genetics, as some say.

elle michelin (ellmish), Sunday, 4 September 2005 07:27 (twenty years ago)

*All* cats fart.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Sunday, 4 September 2005 07:34 (twenty years ago)

Cats fart? I've never heard Phin (pic above) do such a thing.
Hmm...is a cat fart cute in any way, or is it just farty?
I picture a cartoony "pppffth" sort of sound.

elle michelin (ellmish), Sunday, 4 September 2005 07:37 (twenty years ago)

Well, all the cat farts I've known are silent, but very very smelly.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Sunday, 4 September 2005 07:39 (twenty years ago)

CLASSIC, of course.

http://static.flickr.com/31/38299620_9bc75cff18.jpg?v=0

changy, 15 years old (or thereabouts). he doesn't fart, but his fur is mostly dreadlocked at the moment.

stevie (stevie), Sunday, 4 September 2005 07:47 (twenty years ago)

Beautiful. After lurking on/off for a few years, most of my first posts are concerned with feline flatulence.

Anyhoo. Back to the senility of the felinity.

I have yet to hear a cat fart. Does this mean I haven't experienced complete cat friendship? Perhaps my feline friend is too sensitive to experience such a release in my presence.

elle michelin (ellmish), Sunday, 4 September 2005 07:49 (twenty years ago)

I have also yet to *hear* one. But I have smelled them many, many times.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Sunday, 4 September 2005 07:51 (twenty years ago)

Changy...sweetie!...long fur can be hard to care for with an older cat.

elle michelin (ellmish), Sunday, 4 September 2005 07:53 (twenty years ago)

x-post: gear, those photos are beautiful. Cats of yours?

elle michelin (ellmish), Sunday, 4 September 2005 07:59 (twenty years ago)

he just spends forever rolling about in the garden, the plants, etc. all kindsa gloopy stuff gets into his long fur, and it mats, and he *hates it when i tug it out, so we have to go the vets at the end of every summer and have it all clipped off.

but i wouldn't swap him for the world.

stevie (stevie), Sunday, 4 September 2005 08:03 (twenty years ago)

but he does not, afaik, fart. sometimes, uh, his hind legs get a little mucky, and that's pretty rotten. but no farting.

stevie (stevie), Sunday, 4 September 2005 08:04 (twenty years ago)

A senior cat rolling in gardens is a beautiful thing, even if the outcome is a bit of muck!

elle michelin (ellmish), Sunday, 4 September 2005 08:07 (twenty years ago)

Ta for now. Off to sleep.

I wonder if I'll dream about farting cats?

elle michelin (ellmish), Sunday, 4 September 2005 08:11 (twenty years ago)

Classic, my cat is 19. She sleeps a lot, and her purr is very rattlely these days.

I haven't either, and I assume for the exact same reason. I mean, you should see the stunned look he'll give me if I do in his presence!

melton mowbray (adr), Sunday, 4 September 2005 10:51 (twenty years ago)

We have a kitten and a 13 year old cat, and the only one that farts is the kitten! Fucking stinks as well. He had diarrhoea this week, lovely.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Sunday, 4 September 2005 12:01 (twenty years ago)

My cat is 14 and she can still get into the house by the skylight (usually with a mouse either inside her body or mouth).

JTS, Sunday, 4 September 2005 12:08 (twenty years ago)

I have never had a cat fart.

Si.C@rter (SiC@rter), Sunday, 4 September 2005 15:27 (twenty years ago)

cats do fart. Silent but deadly. My current cat does not, but Old cat (now in kitty heaven) farted fiercely from kittenhood thru old age.

Wiggy (Wiggy), Sunday, 4 September 2005 21:53 (twenty years ago)

...closely followed by one field mouse (alive) which promptly scuttled into the cupboard under the stairs, necessitating removal of tons of old junk in order to catch it. Occasionally I wish they *would* settle into quiet old age....

Our cat Frosty had surgery and a bunch of teeth pulled because of gum disease in September, and was doing better for a while, but he's been starting to lose weight again, so I looked in his mouth yesterday and he's got more problems. He can't eat at all without serious pain, not even soft wet food, so it's back to the vet for him tomorrow. I always worried that, being solid white, skin cancer would be his downfall, not his gums.

do i have to draw you a diaphragm (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 7 January 2007 16:40 (nineteen years ago)

not to alarm you but ask your vet about squamaous cell carcinoma. qtip was all white and we started off treating his issues as gum/tooth problem s then the found his facial tumor. :(

xpost, the dogs had no problem with qtip and he was kind of wimpy. Wheezy seems pretty confident so I'm hoping after they all get past the "hey why are you here sharing my owners?" phase, all will be well.

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Sunday, 7 January 2007 16:45 (nineteen years ago)

Ugh. Thanks, Sam, I'll ask the vet about that tomorrow.

do i have to draw you a diaphragm (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 7 January 2007 16:48 (nineteen years ago)

Holy crap, that's scarey. Our Linus, who is mostly white, is going in tomorrow to have all his teeth pulled. He's only young. Could he have a tumour too? I hope not.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Sunday, 7 January 2007 17:20 (nineteen years ago)

I don't want to panic everyone! Here's what happened with Q-Tip.

We notice his face is swollen underneath his eye and eye was running. Vet says eye infection. We torture him twice a day with eye cream for two weeks. swelling grows.

His mouth starts smelling nasty and we can tell he's favoring the other side of his mouth (where the swelling isn't). Take him back and the vet says, 'oh, this wasn't his eye. His gums are inflamed and the teeth are falling out. The swelling must be an abcess."

He goes in to pull all the loose teeth from that upper left gum and vet says after she pulled them she was concerned about how his jaw felt beneath the gum. Cue xray and large tumor in his cheek is reveled. It had destroyed the jaw bone below it hence the inflammed gums and falling out teeth.

It was squamous cell carcinoma which usually manifests as skin lesions (esp in white cats.) His had invaded the soft tissues of his face however and there was no treatment at this point. About two and half months after his diagnosis we had to put him to sleep b/c he was just too miserable. He was 13 and had had a good, happy life.

Like I said I don't want to alarm anyone. I just want illustrate how in my situation the cancer was disguised by other seeming ailments. Also, I was unaware that this type of cancer could be anything but with the skin.

good luck with your ailing kitties. Hopefully it's nothing but run-of-the mill old kitty dental problems.

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Sunday, 7 January 2007 17:58 (nineteen years ago)

He's not even old! He's only three! His sister died at four months and our other cat died at one and a half. I desperately want Linus to be alright, but I confess that I feel I'm doomed to only ever have broken animals in my house. Both my dogs, who are under three, have to eat a special diet because of their serious digestive problems.

I'm sure he will be fine though. He has been on antibiotics for the last week, and the improvement in his mood is remarkable already. I'm simultaneously looking forward to our perky new cat and guilty about all the pain he must have been in for most of his life so far.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Sunday, 7 January 2007 18:41 (nineteen years ago)

Sam, your new kitty is very adorable.

Allyzay Eisenschefter Pop You To The Extreme (allyzay), Sunday, 7 January 2007 18:54 (nineteen years ago)

Wheezy looks adorable, Sam.

M. White (Miguelito), Sunday, 7 January 2007 19:00 (nineteen years ago)

I normally wish I had a dog, but the other day I was in a house with this big old cat which then came and sat on my lap, and it reminded me of how relaxing big old lazy cats that sit on your lap are.

The Real Dirty Vicar (dirtyvicar), Sunday, 7 January 2007 19:30 (nineteen years ago)

Congrats, Sam! Congrats, Wheezy!

A Radio Picture (Rrrickey), Sunday, 7 January 2007 20:15 (nineteen years ago)

Awh Sam I was sorry to hear about QTip, congrats on your new kittie!

Our old cat is still holding on at nearly 15, but he's probably not got much longer, he's already reached the average life expectancy for a cat with his type of cancer. Chemotherapy didn't really work so there's no chance of remission, but he's fairly stable at the moment, not getting better, not getting worse. I hope he makes it to his 15th birthday.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Sunday, 7 January 2007 20:47 (nineteen years ago)

Aw Wheezy's a cutie. Is she shy like a lot of torties are?

Abbott (Abbott), Sunday, 7 January 2007 22:58 (nineteen years ago)

haha, no way! she's very pushy and sassy. hopefully this will help her out with the dogs.

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Monday, 8 January 2007 11:03 (nineteen years ago)

Just made a vet appt. for Frosty for 9:30. He's so weak he might be easier to get into the carrier.

:( I'm sorry.

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Monday, 8 January 2007 14:06 (nineteen years ago)

Sorry dudes with sick cats!

Fingers crossed my old old cat makes it to her 20th birthday this August.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 8 January 2007 18:16 (nineteen years ago)

Linus came home from the vet minus six teeth but feeling okay. He is a little bloody around the mouth, which hilariously makes him look like DAS WAMPYRE CAT, and the vet said he'd probably have to have all his teeth taken out eventually, but he's okay for now.

Hooray.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Monday, 8 January 2007 23:30 (nineteen years ago)

Whoah, 20!

Candy: tastes like chicken, if chicken was a candy. (Austin, Still), Monday, 8 January 2007 23:40 (nineteen years ago)

I'm glad Linus is okay. Frosty has to go back Wednesday a.m. for more teeth out, but the vet said he didn't see any problems beyond teeth/gums. By the end of the visit I was more worried about the vet, who has a severe stammer and was having particular trouble this morning communicating.

Thanks Rock. Fingers crossed for poor gummy Frosty.

Linus is excited because he has antibiotics to take, which means TINNED SALMON, which is like cat crack for him.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 08:13 (nineteen years ago)

Hooray for Linus and Frosty! You're lucky linus will take his meds. QTip was always too smart/suspicous for that mixed in with food stuff.

wheezy is in my lap, loving, right now. She has been making me get up an hour earlier lately to spend time with her.

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 11:39 (nineteen years ago)

Corduroy threw up on the sofa this morning, on MY seat :P

He's usually pretty good about where he pukes, like if he's sitting on the bed and he starts retching he'll jump off onto the floor. Poor thing must have been caught by a surprise barfing.

He did manage to spew on some Yo La Tengo CDs the other day, but cats hate indie rock, so that's not surprising.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 11:47 (nineteen years ago)

My old cat (she's 10, which the vet described as "geriatric" last time we took her in) threw up on our new pram the other day. I'm really not sure how she's going to take to sharing our attention with a baby from next month.

Meg Busset (Mog), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 12:31 (nineteen years ago)

Also she farts too, and has the most rank breath. But I love her.

Meg Busset (Mog), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 12:32 (nineteen years ago)

haha my old manx who died two years ago (at 16 yrs) had the notorious "Manx butt" issues. poop always hung halfway out or stuck to her fur. bleargh. I won't go into details about what the depths of my love forced me to do.

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 13:57 (nineteen years ago)

That's what Maurice Gibb died from I believe

Cats are the best people ever.

Adam Beales (Pye Poudre), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 21:41 (nineteen years ago)

oh goodness sick kitties, hope they are all going to get better. I'm horrified that my kitty has been diagnosed with feline kidney disease and she must eat low- protein food now which she hates. One of the symptoms is really rank breath and mouth and gum issues, in fact they caught this in a blood test when I took her in to have her teeth cleaned. I'm told I should brush her teeth. Does anyone brush their cat's teeth? I got a special kitty toothbrush and fish flavor paste (yeech - just the thought gags me) but haven't had the courage to try it yet. She still looks at the new food like I have just put down a dish of s*** for her to eat and she walks away.

I'm getting a complex over this!

Wiggy (Wiggy), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 01:25 (nineteen years ago)

Brush a cat's teeth? Rather you than me.

Those extra blood tests when you bring 'em in for an op are a good thing, aren't they? Especially with cats, who don't give a lot away about how they might be feeling.

She'll come round to her food. She's just trying to wait you out.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 08:17 (nineteen years ago)

two weeks pass...
Frosty's latest round of oral surgery has fixed him up physically, but he seems to have suffered some sort of total psychological break with reality. After 10 years as a scaredy-cat, he's turned aggressive with the other two cats. At least I've got him eating again.

do i have to draw you a diaphragm (Rock Hardy), Friday, 26 January 2007 19:29 (eighteen years ago)

Maybe his face pain was causing him to be timid, and now that it's gone his true personality is unleashed.

Maybe.

one year passes...

My old kitty (17) whom I love dearly and whom I have to give IV fluids 2x weekly for kidney issues has this thing that she does where she puffs up her cheeks and makes ticking-pop noises. I wish I knew why.

libcrypt, Saturday, 1 March 2008 23:10 (seventeen years ago)

She is possibly making kissing noises because she loves you?
My kitty is sweet 16. No health problems yet, knock on wood. I want her to live 4-ever.

saudade, Sunday, 2 March 2008 18:15 (seventeen years ago)

Aw blowing kisses cute.

libcrypt, Sunday, 2 March 2008 20:26 (seventeen years ago)

That cat that I grew up with is turning 21 sometime around now (we picked her up as a stray 20 years ago this spring, and she was about a year old then) and while she is definitely old, she's still remarkably sprightly (if deaf, and increasingly picky about what she eats).

Casuistry, Sunday, 2 March 2008 20:29 (seventeen years ago)

I love the way they quack!

roxymuzak, Sunday, 2 March 2008 20:32 (seventeen years ago)

Wait how did you know my cat also quacks besides puffing and popping rox???

libcrypt, Sunday, 2 March 2008 20:37 (seventeen years ago)

Cause that's what old cats DO!

roxymuzak, Sunday, 2 March 2008 20:38 (seventeen years ago)

Also, SMILE U ON CANDID CAMERA LOL

roxymuzak, Sunday, 2 March 2008 20:38 (seventeen years ago)

I don't know how old my cat is, but he's got to be around 15. He's cool, he just wants to chill out and sleep on people mostly. He fell off the couch again the other day. :(

Jordan, Sunday, 2 March 2008 20:45 (seventeen years ago)

I feel lucky that my old cat is still very playful. She does love to sleep and is very affectionate, but she also likes to attack the feet at the end of the bed and play fetch with milk-bottle-top-like toys. She does quack but in a very siamese meow-quacking way. The other cat has a traditional mew but purrs like some bizarre bird.

libcrypt, Sunday, 2 March 2008 22:50 (seventeen years ago)

They have been having more fights lately, which disturbs me. The young cat (1.5 years) will want to play with the older one and bop her on the head and the older one gets a big scared hiss on and then I have to comfort her for 3 or 4 hours.

So, at the age of (at least) 21, it seems like she's had kidney failure. My mother is dealing with her making a mess everywhere (she is wearing kitty diapers sometimes, but they fall off easily and they are bulky when full) and we're hoping that she is not in too much pain. They very much don't want to take her in to have her put down, and would rather she die either at home with them or by heading off somewhere to do it alone (she's indoor/outdoor). It's unclear whether she only has a few days or whether she has a few months in her. She's being a picky eater (mostly into lunchmeat, last I heard, after a few days on baby food) and sometimes a voracious drinker. So, she's a good kitty and hopefully she will have a peaceful ending.

Casuistry, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 03:12 (seventeen years ago)

I'm sorry Casuistry. She looks like a very sweet kitty, and I hope her last days are gentle ones.

Jaq, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 03:23 (seventeen years ago)

Sorry to hear that Casuistry, but it does make me happy to see that I've got many years ahead with our (currently 8 year old) Alfred.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 03:28 (seventeen years ago)

I'm glad I got to see her this summer, at least.

Casuistry, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 04:23 (seventeen years ago)

Oof she's doing much worse today, apparently. Disoriented and falling down, too weak to move more than a few steps. My mother, who is an emotional wreck about this, is thinking of taking her in after all.

Casuistry, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 19:03 (seventeen years ago)

Disoriented and falling down, too weak to move more than a few steps.

This is a pretty clear sign that it's time. At least it was for our dog. Condolences on your ailing kitty.

Rock Hardy, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 19:09 (seventeen years ago)

There maybe is a housecall vet where your mom lives. That can make things much easier all around. I found one in Seattle through googling.

Jaq, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 19:30 (seventeen years ago)

:(

Casuistry, my sympathies.

Michael White, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 19:34 (seventeen years ago)

Oh so sad. Our kitty also has kidney problems that, although controlled OK with medication for now, will likely affect her more in future years. I can't imaging being without her!

quincie, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 20:25 (seventeen years ago)

oh kitty :( my sympathies too and wishes for peaceful end to a happy life

rrrobyn, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 20:26 (seventeen years ago)

My sincere sympathies, C. I know that when my 17-year-old kitty gets to that point, I will be a total wreck.

libcrypt, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 20:50 (seventeen years ago)

:(

Jordan, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 20:55 (seventeen years ago)

I keep telling my mother to call a vet already, just for some advice at least, but she is weirdly reluctant to do so. Also she's decided that maybe her reluctance to take her in to be put down is more about *her* not being to let go. But she just picked her up and snuggled a while with her and put her onto some pillow and she seems much more comfortable now.

(For those who aren't clear on this, they live on the other side of the country from me.)

Casuistry, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 21:03 (seventeen years ago)

I spend a lot of time fretting about my cat's age, and he's only 13. I hope we have many more years together, but I don't think I'd want him to live to 21 and be in such poor shape.

Condolences Casuistry.

wanko ergo sum, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 21:05 (seventeen years ago)

She's only been in really bad shape for about a week, though.

Casuistry, Thursday, 20 March 2008 03:11 (seventeen years ago)

Well, she spent most of the rest of yesterday and the night feeling much more comfortable resting on pillows, and today she finally passed on her own.

Jordan, Friday, 21 March 2008 15:14 (seventeen years ago)

I would have cuddle with all these old cats.

libcrypt, Friday, 21 March 2008 18:50 (seventeen years ago)

I have a pussy of '91 too. A black one. On one hand, she is very agile compared to other cats of that antiquity (we had to lock the skylight to wean her off using it as an entrance and freefalling onto the bed. My love-life suffered as a result.), but on the other hand, she has lost all her canine teeth and needs to be fed alone because the other 2 cats (twins aged 7) would just eat it all for her. I also have a feeling her hearing and short term memory are ailing too. However out of our cat history she is not gonna suffer too badly... about 10 years ago we lost a cat to our neighbours' water tank :(

JTS, Saturday, 22 March 2008 08:42 (seventeen years ago)

The vet is coming this afternoon to put my old cat to sleep :(

She hasn't eaten in two days and has gone downhill very rapidly since yesterday, she is hiding in the kitchen, panting and foaming a bit at the mouth, she is very shaky and can hardly walk. The vet has confirmed she has heart failure, they could try to treat her but it would be just buying her time, with no guarantee of success, and she may well die in a strange environment. I feel it is kinder for her to go at home, before she is really in pain. Still devastated though :(

I'm sorry, Meg. But I think you're making the right decision.

She's gone now :(

The vet who came to the house said it was definitely the right thing to do, she had fluid on the heart which would have been untreatable. It was very quick and I got to cuddle her and say goodbye.

We had ten lovely years together and I couldn't have had a better kitty.

WHAT MAKE ARE THEY

Some folks come into the humane society looking for the older/old cats. I guess they want to make sure they have comfortable lives during their final years. I should go in to volunteer today; at least their a/c works.

The left one is Maggie, a snowshoe Siamese cat we got from a "rescue" place last year. The right is Greta, who is a traditional (applehead) Siamese that my wife has had since the early 90s.
