I've kipped on beaches before now, of course. Also in the ladies' toilets at Sydney railway station.

On a table in the front row of CBGB's. Drugs may have had something to do with it.

The "movies" room at Ministry of Sound.

I'm sure I can do "stranger"...

I fell asleep on a long-haul aeroplane flight once - not strange in itself of course, but I woke up to discover I had my head in a stranger's lap (and he hadn't woken me to complain, bless him).

At work. I was writing labels for some sandwiches I'd made and when I came to, I realised I'd written 'Egg May' and the tail of the Y trailed right down off the edge of the sticker. I'd been out on the razz the night before.

also numerous pub/club toilets. though yes that was of the passed out rather than tired sleeping variety.

gem (trisk), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 09:51 (twenty years ago)

I've fallen asleep during sex before - I thought it was so common it didn't rate a "strange place." Then again, there was one time when I fell asleep/passed out in a groupie's bed and woke up with my hair on fire because he'd lit all these candles for a "romantic atmosphere". Heh.

gem (trisk), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 09:54 (twenty years ago)

In train station waiting rooms on numerous occasions. Never fallen asleep whilst making with the love, although I've been close a couple of times. I mean, sex usually equals night-time, and night is for sleeping. My body gets confused when I ask it to exert itself at night.

Come Back Johnny B (Johnney B), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 09:57 (twenty years ago)

I went to a rave and got home at 5 am, then had to get to a meeting at 8 -- with a Board of Directors for some charity that happened to be chock-full of nuns and priests. I dozed off right in the middle of it, sitting up in my chair.

I may be going to hell.

i didn't fall asleep during the sonic youth concert at ATP. i was next door at the pub getting pissed.

I slept on a jungle gym on the Charles river esplanade once. It had a plywood loft the kiddies could climb into, with little round windows they could pretend to shoot from.
I actually published a whole issue of my magazine (martha's minions) on this theme. Half the stories were mine. I hitchhiked a lot when I was in college. You end up sleeping in weird places. I also broke into a car in order to sleep in it. That was in Newport.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 12:04 (twenty years ago)

haha actually i wasn't at any ATP at all that had sonic youth playing.. i was thinking of a different yawn inducing band i think.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 12:06 (twenty years ago)

Oh and on the sofas on the fifth floor of an office I used to work in, when I no longer worked there. I was put there by my former boss when he started to despair about picking me up off the floor and finding me a taxi. I woke up with about 15 minutes to go before people started arriving for work and found strawberries in my handbag.

- During a reading being given by Bret Easton Ellis
- Driving down Interstate 55. "Kashmir" lasted only forty-five seconds.
- Motel parking lot after "Kashmir" incident, about eleven in the morning. My road companion kept trying to row the window down. (I didn't have a road companion.)
- Too many bathtubs.

Nowhere interesting in the last few years, though. When I bought my pick-up truck in 2000, I had this thought in the back of my mind that yeah, some night that truck bed's going to come in real handy. However, I haven't slept a wink in it.

I've dozed off while I've been on a training run before, but only for a few seconds. Friday evening after a busy week at work, feeling dog-tired before I even went, plodding along slowly though the countryside, just wanting to lie down and snooze. Awful.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 13:27 (twenty years ago)

Many years ago I went inter railing around Europe with a couple of friends. Our entire planning for the holiday was to get a Thomas Cook train timetable and a list of youth hostels in Europe. With this idiotic lack of planning we didn't know what sights there were in any city we went to, so most of the time we saw nothing (in Bordeaux, Toulouse, Rome, Bologna and Venice we failed to see a single sight). Our budget was hopelessly optimistic so we couldn't afford any maps or buses, never mind entry to museums, and half the time we faced a choice between sleeping in a hostel and eating bread, or sleeping on a train and eating at Burger King.

One day we decided we wanted to see mountains so we crossed the border from France to Spain in the Pyrenees to stop at a little village which had a youth hostel. When we got there we found that
a) the village was a ski resort which was completely deserted in summer
b) the youth hostel, which was about a half hour walk in 35C heat out of the village, was completely full of Spanish teenagers on English courses so there was nowhere for us to stay
c) there were only two trains a day and we had arrived on the second one in the middle of the afternoon. the next one was the following morning.

So I slept/waited on the platform for about 15 hours.

on the job

I once awoke in the dark at a gf's house on my back in the living room floor with my pants around my ankles which was disconcerting since, for a second or two, I had no idea where I was. She had seduced me after I had had a hard day at work and I had inconsiderately dozed off during the act. So she got up and left me there.

Being completely incapable of remaining awake during sex is one of the most heartbreakingly frustrating things.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 16:40 (twenty years ago)

It's kind of hilarious though, nickalicious. You spend so much of your waking life hankering after p*ssy and then your body goes and throws you a curveball like, "Actually, right now. Sleep!!"

M. White (Miguelito), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 16:42 (twenty years ago)

Years ago, back when I worked in place where I had a room of my own, I occasionally felt like sleeping during work. The only problem was that the office mail was brought to my room, so my workmates visited my room at least once a day, without knocking. But I deviced a cunning plan! First, I sprinkled some paper clips on the floor. Then I went lying down on the floor, with my feet put against the door (it opened inwards), and took a nap. Now, if someone would've entered the room, I would've woken up because the door would've pushed my feet, and if she/he would've asked what I was doing lying on the floor, I could've explained that I'd dropped my paper clips and was picking them up. I did this at least two times, but never did anyone try to enter the room during my nap, so I didn't find out whether my plan would've worked.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 16:54 (twenty years ago)

Don't forget to add, "and when they fell on the floor, they poked me in the eyes." That would help explain the redness & teariness.

Jaq (Jaq), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 17:20 (twenty years ago)

Yikes! I've read about sleep-cycle studies where they hook all-night truckers up with electrodes and discover that they always fall asleep around 3 in the morning.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 17:22 (twenty years ago)

At this restaurant I worked at in 1997, I routinely snuck naps in the pantry, especially on mornings after the truck dropped off some primary things, most importantly among them, a number of 50 lb. sacks of potatoes that no one besides myself was willing to put away, which the truck guy always stacked right outside the pantry door. I would climb over them and sorta nose-dive into the pantry, where I would sleep on bags of flour.

* in a corridor of a ferry crossing the Baltic sea. (sleep continuously disturbed by very very very very very very very very drunk Fins and Swedes).

* In one of those big yellow salt bins you don't see anymore, near the front at Scarborough.

* on a bench in a waiting room at Birmingham New Street station, in the middle of winter: they turn the heating off but keep the blinding strip lights on. Which is nice. And the noise! Two bobbies woke me up at about 5ish thinking I might be a dosser. I wasn't, I missed the last train after a Kingmaker/Radiohead gig.

* In someone's car on a campsite in the south of France when I was about 11y/o. I couldn't find our tent - passed a car weith the back window completely open: hey presto.

* slumped against my friends toilet after being sick into it at a party. I vaguely recall people banging on the door and me slurring "m'alright!". Eventually they stopped and left me in peace.

* On a bench in a shopping precinct on Xmas Eve.

* On the toilet on a ferry crossing the Baltic (return journey, more peaceful).

Pvt. Dave Goes To Far (scarlet), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 17:53 (twenty years ago)

o christ, where have I not fallen asleep? I'm always doing it. Notables:

On the bass amp stack at a friend's gig. In a puddle on top of a bike shed. In a sleeping bag on a gravel driveway, in the rain. Behind the pumps in a milking shed. On top of one of those piles of massive black bags of cut grass you see in fields. In the toilets on the Waverley. The changing rooms at a pool. On top of a chest freezer in a co-op.

My favourite though was at our old offices, a proper old-school newspaper building. There were deserted floors that used to be full of inkies and hotmetal setters, laid off when computers came in. So when bored at work I'd take tiny clanking lifts to these deserted rooms and cut some zzzzs, cosy on a metal bench, or wooden captain's chair..

I was only disturbed once, sleeping on the stairs that led to the roof, when a photographer trotted up with grimly fiendish in tow. The resulting pictures of GF "flying" off the roof have to be seen to be believed.

Strangest place I fell asleep. Hmmmmm. That would have to be in 1993 or so, in San Francisco, literally in the middle of a loud, raging party held by the Brian Jonestown Massacre. On a couch in the living room. I had driven up from LA that day with not much sleep. Fall down, go boom, oblivious.

Bushes (this one entailed alcohol and the unintentional loss of consciousness)

My old posts on this thread make it seem like I sleep a lot.

I routinely will lay down the back seats of my station wagon and sleep there when camping and/or too-drunk-to-call-a-cab. I've even started keeping pillows & blankets back there, just in case.

Behind a pile of busted concrete, out in the open, head on a sweatshirt, in Boulevard, California. Tough night.

1. On the metal steps of a warehouse across from the Toronto bus terminal.

2. In a ditch. Alcohol was involved, as was the firm belief I could walk the 14 kilometres home. In an hour.

I ditched yoga camp to sleep on concrete, Mandee! both were so dumb, in retrospect.

i don't think i've ever slept anywhere really strange. i slept in a tent on the runway of a decommissioned air force base in Maine, but so did 60,000 other phish fans. there was the time i fell asleep on the shoulder of a girl on a train returning from visiting law school and it turned the girl was a law student, but apart from the coincidence who hasn't done that? maybe sleeping outdoors in NYC, albeit on a college campus lawn with other college students.

this place freaked me out as a kid because I decided the fireplaces looked like Darth Vader's helmet in the dark

I slept under a pool table at a CWRU frat.

oh wait, the strangest place i've slept was the two weeks I spent in random house share on anonymous alley off 16th St NW, just above Scott Circle, on a mattress in a small upstairs room lit only by a make-you-want-to-kill-yourself-flickering-fluorescent-light. the other occupants of the house were politico dudes. the one at the White House came home, if ever, sometime between 2 and 5 AM. I think I saw the Gephardt dude on Saturday only. not sure if I ever saw the third dude. I had to pick up the key off a piece of cardboard on the grill on the back porch. Except sometimes it wasn't there and I had to wait until 2:30 AM for White House dude to come home. At which point I went and banged on the door of gorgeous Barnard girl in gorgeous old red-brick-bay-window rowhouse nearby. She was thrilled, of course.

Like Ronan also on the bus but the busdriver was so kind to leave me on it. We arrived at the last stop, I woke up, realized I was in bumfucknowheresville and had to remain on the bus until he began his tour of Ghent (and suburbs) again. So we arrived back at the Culture Club and I got off. Not that strange a place to sleep. At least I had had some sleep. Usually I'd go straight to work without any sleep. Oh those were the days. Forevah gone. ;-)

Why do I have so many? (and i know, it's an -est question, but I keep thinking of more)

In front of Grand Central station
in bushes (not drunk)
on the side of the interstate in a broken-down vw van. the passing cars made the van sway. safe!
outside at glastonbury, no tent. that sucked.

jergins (jergins), Friday, 9 June 2006 18:14 (nineteen years ago)

during one of the sonic youth shows at shepherds bush in 2002. i'd had only a few hours sleep the night before, we were in the seated upstairs balcony, and they were playing one of their wanky extended jam sets. ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.

1) Bleachers at a Buffalo Bills game
2) Under an upturned rowboat on the beach outside Valencia.

Hmm, this is similar to the sleeping in cars thread. . . Again I'd have to say just outside downtown Detroit, parked in an empty parking lot.

cars are kind of common though. I can't think of any show I've fallen asleep at though surely I have. How about at my desk in front of my class?

A few years ago me and my friends decided to get train tickets to Turku, a town which is about 200 kilometres from here. We just went there to booze up and party, and didn't much think about where we'd spend the night. It was summer, so when the pubs closed, we decided to sleep in a park. We found this children's traffic park, a place where kids learn traffic regulations, and thought the middle of the traffic circle would be a good enough place to sleep. It wasn't the warmthest of summer nights though, so we huddled together for warmth. Next morning we woke up around 8AM to the awful sound of peacocks screaming (there was a bird park right next to the traffic park). It was Monday, and there were a lot of people going to work right past the us. In retrospect we must've looked like a bunch of dirty hippies: two girls and three guys sleeping in a pile in the middle of a children's traffic park on a Monday morning.

I might have told this same story upthread. Senile, and can't be bothered to read the whole thing. Some college friends and I had hitchhiked to Newport for the jazz festival. My brother lived there and was going to put us up, but he was waiting on tables until late late. My best friend and I were exhausted so we found an unlocked car in a parking lot and took a nap in it. When we woke up I found a toy gun in the car so I stole it.
