new year's eve: classic or dud?

expensive, impossible to get to and from anywhere except on foot/horseback (don't even think about bastard taxis), generally cold, everywhere full of gobshites. massive pressure to have good time ultimately leads to being miserable from start to finish.

staying in, with friends, watching new year's eve telly: still anti-climactic. what's the answer?

clive, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i like new years eve, but don't love it. i go to bed about 10 or 11 pm, am asleep when all the business is on, and then get up really early on new years day and go for a walk. new years day can be really empty and lovely.

a couple of years ago, my mum, my sister and me drove from London back to Bradford on NYE, and by 10 pm the motorways were really empty, and at one point we could see no other cars on the M62.

gareth, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

New year is horrible. But I like Gareth's answer. Maybe I will just go to bed early!

james, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

New Years Day is perfect for that Day of the Dead emptiness. Even in cities you can imagine the everyone's gone, like the book 'Tokyo Nowhere' - long shots of the city, abandoned.
New Years Eve can be notoriously bad. Last year I rang friends up, all over the country at 4 in the morning to find out where the ended up - outside waiting for someone, stuck on the hard shoulder. So it's not just me who's disappointed.

K-reg, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Its terrible and I hate it. the only answer is to take some serious drugs. and even that may not save it.

Ronan, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

champaegen, kissing pretty boys at midnight , auld lang syne , petty sentiments, its all good.

anthony, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i generally don't go out on new years eve because there are too many scarey drunk people screaming "happy new year!" at you and the like. but i always enjoy myself just with staying in with friends, having a few quiet beers and watching telly.

james, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dud. There's always too high an expectation placed on having a good time which will inevitably end up in disappointment. The best NYE I ever had involved a car accident and a very weird girl.

electric sound of jim, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mercy's sake you lot. It's not great but it's not bad. Your expectations are your problem not anyone else's - Gareth seems to have an excellent idea. Me? I enjoy it. Not generally a good idea to go out that night because of all the people who hardly go out any *other* night, but I usually see friends or family and have a good, intelligent, time. Can't remember one I really HATED. Classic.

Tom, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

gareth's idea is a quality one, I reckon, one which I may steal this year. my opinion of new years eve has been poisoned by a string of terrible ones, bah. like that time in 1996... (everything goes misty.)

sorry tom, something about the way you said 'good, intelligent time' made me laugh - I'm not sure why.

clive, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

For better or for worse, I can't remember too many New Year's Eves. My favorite New Years will always be the one when I first got drunk. My parents would always go out on New Year's, and on our first New Year without a babysitter, we shut ourselves in our parents' room (where the stereo was, and we locked out our little sister). My brother went down in the basement to select some booze. He came up with two tall glasses of straight cognac. I said, "I think you're supposed to mix that with something..." And he said no, that you should drink it in a tall glass, like a glass of milk. I knew he was wrong, but I was trying to be as macho as he was. He was gulping it! I drank some and diluted it with tap water when he wasn't looking. I think we had another glass after that, too.

Kerry, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Remembering what we were doing last year, "good, intelligent time" made me laugh too.

Pete, Friday, 21 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

hey anthony i like champagne and kissing pretty boys too!! i like NYE but only in people's houses. i hate all that mob action on the streets.

katie, Friday, 21 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think that was the beer talking Pete. But you can only know intelligence if you have plumbed the depths of idiocy, after all.

Tom, Friday, 21 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

new years eve tv = dud. stay in, with friends, all wear the spangliest dresses you can find, pu t choons on, dance around, eat things, drink things, laugh and hug and dance and give each other stupid pressies. just DONT put the tv on (esp. jools holland's bloody hoootananny)

katie, Friday, 21 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dud generally, as I know some people who are notorious for going home early. This years crew however, well I have hopes. i would not mind spending most of the evening in so all the teens have drunk themselves into comas and are in cells before I get out on the town

Menelaus Darcy, Friday, 21 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

gareth and katie both have NYE sussed, in their own way. usually I do what gareth does, this year for a change I expect to be doing what katie does.
that's it. merry xmas and a happy 2002 to all on ILE.

Jeff W, Friday, 21 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

New Year's Eve can fuck off. Has a tendency to put all my failings and insecurities about being English (and me) into sharp relief. I enjoyed it in 1999, quite. That's the only good one I've ever had.

N., Friday, 21 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Going to a very nice beer based restaurant with my parents and another couple their age as usual - since I don't have (m)any IRL friends and we've been doing this for like forever. Don't care much about missing parties and heavy drinking, I'll be having some very good food & not much of a disturbed biorhythm when I get back to work on Monday. Getting old, innit. :D

VegemiteGrrrl, Friday, 31 December 2010 06:39 (fifteen years ago)

My dad bequeathed me his house. Normally I'd invite people over but it is in no condition for that. I'm really sad about this. I actually love New Year's parties at clubs but they are too crowded and often full of young drunks.

New Year's Day in the US is so crap you're better off staying out all night drinking, it's like Christmas without turkey or mashed potatoes or presents or grandmothers but some crappy parade and a bunch of football.

hate nye hugely. auld langs syne is the worst, i really need to be somewhere where people don't sing that, it sounds like the end of a bad 00s disaster film where a meteor is about to destroy the earth, humans all weedy and badly singing together versus the fates.

The last several years I've just arranged it so I'm spending it with a couple of my best friends at one of our houses. That way we don't need to worry about taxis or wankers. This year we have one of my best friends and her husband coming over, last year the 4 of us went to another friend's house over in Edmonton, got the free tube/bus back to ours about 4am and carried on til sunrise.

I know it's not very glamourous but really it's the best way for us.

Also I am old.

at home with wife (daughter at mother-in-law's tonight), drinking some odd, interesting combination of beer and wine

http://insiderspassport.com/images/stone-vertical-epic.jpg

it interesting.

a Belgian Strong Pale Ale brewed with pale malt and triticale (a cross of wheat and rye), hopped with German Perle hops, and steeped with chamomile during the whirlpool stage. In secondary fermentation, we added a juice blend of Muscat, Gewurztraminer, and Sauvignon Blanc grape varieties

Strange Crüt (Trayce), Saturday, 1 January 2011 04:20 (fifteen years ago)

Mookie why u hate on the Raiders on the last night of the year ;_;

VegemiteGrrrl, Saturday, 1 January 2011 04:25 (fifteen years ago)

because that's what the raiders are there for

mookieproof, Saturday, 1 January 2011 04:28 (fifteen years ago)

i'm no raiders fan, but jim plunkett was a great QB, and it's an outrage that he isn't in the NFL HOF.

Daniel, Esq., Saturday, 1 January 2011 04:30 (fifteen years ago)

Xpost ORLY bc that's what I thought the Steelers were there for :D

And Daniel I agree, Plunk should be in no doubt. Ken Stabler too though I feel like they may never put him in bc his stats & ints kinda kill him.

VegemiteGrrrl, Saturday, 1 January 2011 04:55 (fifteen years ago)

i liked stabler. he was a tough sonofagun.

Daniel, Esq., Saturday, 1 January 2011 04:57 (fifteen years ago)

Also, a Tide alum. CLASSIC!

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Saturday, 1 January 2011 05:06 (fifteen years ago)

I told Mr Veg that if Stabler ever goes into the HOF I wanna go to Canton. I wanna see inside the "Juicer"

O'Shea the Cubeman (San Te), Saturday, 1 January 2011 06:23 (fifteen years ago)

Bummer dude. So the rain dance didn't help

VegemiteGrrrl, Saturday, 1 January 2011 06:25 (fifteen years ago)

It was still much appreciated!

O'Shea the Cubeman (San Te), Saturday, 1 January 2011 06:26 (fifteen years ago)

Strange Crüt (Trayce), Saturday, 1 January 2011 06:35 (fifteen years ago)

O'Shea the Cubeman (San Te), Saturday, 1 January 2011 06:38 (fifteen years ago)

Escaped the inlaws after watching weird Andre Rieu concert where we all sat and laughed at how douchey he is and made tasteless Hitler jokes. so that was kinda fun. Home now, watching A Serious Man on demand. Bummed though, left the champers at inlaw house so no booze :(

VegemiteGrrrl, Saturday, 1 January 2011 06:49 (fifteen years ago)

first classic after several years of duds. whew

ciderpress, Saturday, 1 January 2011 06:55 (fifteen years ago)

Great times! Disco tunes all night and some wild living room dancing. My legs are (marginally) more sore than my head.

krakow, Saturday, 1 January 2011 10:08 (fifteen years ago)

backyard party at friend of friend's house, then got lift to amazing warehouse party with huge manta ray sculpture suspended above dancefloor, people laying all over the road out front, like a damned warzone

was better than last year!

scrag bloc bologna (haitch), Saturday, 1 January 2011 11:53 (fifteen years ago)

i actually had fun. we pretty much played Things all night and my bro, who is a bartender, made us drinks the whole night.

also watched Cannibal the Musical for the first time in like 9 years!

O'Shea the Cubeman (San Te), Saturday, 1 January 2011 13:22 (fifteen years ago)

had a lovely nye in the end, went to a party with a few ilxorz...got home about 6am, really nice time.

I see what this is (Local Garda), Saturday, 1 January 2011 13:45 (fifteen years ago)

Went to pub with some of my favourite people, listened to cheesy pub karaoke tunes, drank lots, had fun, we all left before the pub closed, didn't have to wait too long for a taxi home. Was basically like a good Friday night out with mates in the pub, with extra mates who aren't usually in town and more free food and drink.

ailsa, Saturday, 1 January 2011 14:15 (fifteen years ago)

A friend and I festively wandered through the Terra Cotta Warriors exhibit at the ROM. Did you know the Qin army (a distant relative to the Kiss army) ran roughshod over China between 230 and 220 B.C.?

clemenza, Saturday, 1 January 2011 14:33 (fifteen years ago)

NYE actually not too bad this year. Went to my best friend's place where he had a bunch of people over. Two people ended up fucking in the guest room shortly after midnight and another puking off the deck. Pretty glad that wasn't me tbh. Home by 2 but with a sick puppy at 7:00. :( Really hoping I don't wind up at the animal hospital today. I've already spent two New Year's Days in the ER for myself (non-drunk related illnesses) and it's not fun.

ENBB, Saturday, 1 January 2011 14:39 (fifteen years ago)

Went to Alabama 3's NYE party at the Jamm in Brixton with gf + bunch of best friends. Unsurprisingly fairly lol old crowd and a bit expensive but as far as going out on NYE can be, it was very enjoyable.

My girl and I hung out with our married friends at their house, played apples to apples and mario bros. on Wii, laughed at sex toy infomercials, went outside at midnight to make noise and wish the hood a good year, smoked mad w33d, drank only beer and still feel like a human being this morning. Sounds like a pretty great argument for the boring life!

Pleasant Plains, Saturday, 1 January 2011 18:36 (fifteen years ago)

ughhh

but nye was good, dressed in drag, got my face painted, caught the bus, good times all around

Fun new years party but aint no available women here :(

This happened to me as well. Maybe I should have stayed perched atop the city by myself at the top of an abandoned school's east stairwell w/ a decent bottle of white wine - as I was when the actual year changed over - instead of trying to be social.

Simon H., Saturday, 1 January 2011 18:48 (fifteen years ago)

xxpost: lol PP we played that too! Semi autos outplayed fireworks this year so we headed back inside. Distant, but still scary as hell.

nye went like this: thai food (really more chinese tho: egg noodle soup with roast pork and bok choy), egg nog, listened to '90s madonna, watched the ball drop on east coast time, fell asleep.

morning after: slept in, made scrambled eggs, drinking coffee. no hangover cuz i didn't put that much whiskey in the nog.

went to a rad house party here in atl w/ my brother's band & then the Grand Prize Winners From Last Year, a local band that could be huge, beats + guitars + rapping + horns, incredible, all in a kitchen at a house in Cabbagetown...still blown away by the awesomeness.

Euler, Saturday, 1 January 2011 20:25 (fifteen years ago)

Drank a massive amount (two bourbon-and-cokes, one cosmopolitan, four glasses of champagne, and three-quarters of a 4Loko without getting a hangover or anywhere past half-drunk. Am worried about my growing tolerance for booze.

Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Saturday, 1 January 2011 23:17 (fifteen years ago)

(That's not all I did, but I posted that already to another thread.)

Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Saturday, 1 January 2011 23:18 (fifteen years ago)

you only drank a 3loko.

PWN: The Paul Winfield Network (get bent), Sunday, 2 January 2011 00:54 (fifteen years ago)

i can't drink as much as I used to as it impacts stomach acid issues that didn't used to be as bad. I kinda think it's a good thing. if this was 06 I'd have passed out from tanq and tonic

O'Shea the Cubeman (San Te), Sunday, 2 January 2011 00:57 (fifteen years ago)

My husband must have drank a 1Loko, then, because he drank the rest of it.
