I'm bored of christmas already, my brother and sister have gone to my mums and my dad a grandad have fallen asleep, (already), and my path of escape for a few hours, the Liverpool Tate, was closed today. So go on then tell me what you've got planned for new year.

Ed, Monday, 24 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I want to go see Guns N Roses in Las Vegas just to be there.

chaki, Monday, 24 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm gonna be in Las Vegas for a couple days, but getting back just *before* new years..anyone else gonna be there that time?

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Monday, 24 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hanging around with a small group of friends and having some laughs, some good food, some good wine, things like that. Can't go wrong

Ned Raggett, Monday, 24 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Haven't got anything fixed yet, but quite likely to be rather similar to Ned's. Going out at New Year sucks ass.

RickyT, Monday, 24 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i dunno. but it could easily go wrong.

duane, Monday, 24 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

oh yeah i know. "gettin' it together in the country".

duane, Monday, 24 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I believe thee commonly-used term is "Jack Shit"

Norman Phay, Monday, 24 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

New Years I'll be here at home just warm & toasty! Yeppers this old girl is going to be vegging watching some good movies hopefully :)

Gale Deslongchamps, Monday, 24 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I believe I shall be going to a Strange Fruit event at the Garage in London.

Ally C, Monday, 24 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

cabbage, Monday, 24 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have not yet ascertained who will be down from their holidays in the north island, and who will be back in town. i will be hanging round with friends hopefully and having a non stressful, non traumatic and uninsulted time. So be nice to me everyone dammit.

Duane- you going to be in Timaru then? or risk soaking up in Dunners?

Menelaus Darcy, Monday, 24 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i'm in timaru yeah, tomorrow i'm drivin to chch to take my sister's boyfren to the aeroport, then i'm gonna go back down to oamaru after that to start my new band with sir lord bam bam & boy howdy. gotta keep moving!

duane, Monday, 24 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

duane, Monday, 24 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Menelaus Darcy, Monday, 24 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

we're not boys, we're men!

duane, Monday, 24 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

we're all gonna grow moustaches.

duane, Monday, 24 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Menelaus Darcy, Tuesday, 25 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yeah solid. any tattoo suggestions?

duane, Tuesday, 25 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

White rose on your hip, heart with "mom" written through it and a picture of the crucifiction over your back, just like teh guy from P.O.D.

Menelaus Darcy, Tuesday, 25 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I shall also be attending the Strange Fruit event Upstairs at the Garage, and, if the gods smile on me, I shall be DJing for Ally and Chris. No-one else, mind.

Mark C in bosom of family, Tuesday, 25 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I will not be going to the Garage. For why? Because the evil B*x*nd*le will be playing there.

RickyT, Tuesday, 25 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Why RickyT, do you not fancy a boogie?

I shall not be going there either, I think after the 29th and ZigZag on the 30th - is that still going on? - that I might possibly be lying somewhere in a ditch (OR 'THEEE DITCH'*!!!!!!) moaning and weeping.

* = SHOREDITCH as any fule kno.

Sarah, Tuesday, 25 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh I forgot to mention, that this is the thread where I get to gloat over the fact that I'm going to be in Italy. As yet I know I will be in italy and with whom I'll be there with but all else is in turmoil due to a suspicious character called eduardo.

Ed, Tuesday, 25 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Har-de-har, Clarke.

RickyT, Tuesday, 25 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I want to go to see Philth or Layo and Bushwacka, undecided. I think dwugs might be able to save New Years. it's normally so shite.

Ronan, Tuesday, 25 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Wasn't ILE (London Branch) meant to be doing something?

Graham, Tuesday, 25 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well? Tomorrow isn't it?

I shall also be at Strange Fruit, and have just made a very threatening phone call to my brother Noboru Wataya after he said he would turn up.

Graham, Saturday, 29 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm going for a curry.

DG, Saturday, 29 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Is anyone else doing the thing where when anyone invites you to something you go "hmmmmmmm maybe" knowing that in the end you'll pick somewhere in a mad rush and end up wishing you went to one of the other places.

Ronan, Saturday, 29 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Pub crawl update - no idea mate. I think we're getting together for a beer at least, maybe several, but I won't be along until a bit later cause I'm meeting friends in the afternoon.

New Year? Probably a quiet one in, but you never know.

Tracer Hand, Saturday, 29 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't know what I'm doing yet. Damn. A friend of a (hem hem) friend was supposed to be having a party though the party has now become a small gathering which I'm not quite sure if I can go to. If not, then another friend of a friend of a (hem hem) friend is supposed to be having a party or something. Apparantly the would-be party thrower is a web designer who lives in Shoreditch (gah!)

jamesmichaelward, Saturday, 29 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

don't know exactly yet. i could be hanging with menelaus and steve and other assorted local loonies, or i might go to powder (the gay night) at fuel.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 29 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Will that stand up in court Ned?

I really need to get out of the house tomorrow so can someone mail me their mobile number or tell where you might be meeting. Thanks.

I SHOULD HOPE. Otherwise this whole ruling the world scam of mine has been for nought.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 29 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm going to a party in the house of a girlfriend of a friend.

I think most of Dublin will be there.

DV, Sunday, 30 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Right, where are people meeting before SF?

Graham, Sunday, 30 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i'm going to a party with a bunch of people I don't like. urgh.

Ronan, Monday, 31 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

We're going to a pajama party. FEAR!

*does so* I am still hoping we can grab a bottle of Moet et Chandon, but we'll see...

Ned Raggett, Monday, 31 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

As far as I know, there will be no nudity at this party. However, the woman hosting is NOTORIOUS for flinging her clothing willy- nilly. We shall see what happens.

Dan Perry, Monday, 31 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm staying in, to eat chocolate money and listen to bluegrass music.

Have a good time if you are venturing out this eve! :)

james, Monday, 31 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

We're staying home and friends are coming to us to drink, play rekkerds and the like. I"m about to go to the liquor store and the n wipe down the good crystal champagne flutes. yay new years!

Sam-at-home, Monday, 31 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

If I can escape my office--they're having some big block party/rave on Hollywood Blvd. with Paul Oakenfold and my pop nemesis BT and they've cordoned off all the surrounding streets, help--I'll be heading out to see Gosford Park and then over my friend Lisa's house where we'll play Celebrity and Pictionary until the "kids" who can't handle their vicodin and champagne start to get on my nerves and I head home.

Arthur, Monday, 31 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Just cooked some Hoppin' John (black-eyed peas with herbs, rice, raw grated onions). Lisa & I are going out shortly to a party a friend of hers on the Lower East Side is throwing. I've got a small box of marzipan potatoes to eat at midnight (a family tradition). Thence, homeward and sleep.

Douglas, Monday, 31 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Barring any major changes, I will start the new year sitting in my living room with friends (watching frost giants & other fantastical creatures smack the virtual shit out of them), banging away on my roomie's laptop, thinking & writing about Big Issues, planning for next year. Maybe I'll toss in a workout somewhere in there. Oh - and I saw the Royal Tennenbaums, which was very, very nice.

David Raposa, Monday, 31 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Pinefox danced to S-Club 7. We all saw.

Side question: That bloody awful Spearmint record: Classic or Dud?

Graham, Monday, 31 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My best friend came over and we watched Titus, which is quite a good movie.

Maria, Tuesday, 1 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I did?

Graham, Wednesday, 2 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I went to Niagra Falls.

Ally, Saturday, 5 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

six years pass...

I'm curious, and for quite practical reasons i.e. I have nothing to do this New Year's and unfortunately I don't really have the option of staying at home as the quiet solitude that I'd be craving if I did would be disrupted by my annoying flatmates.

So if anyone from the Groke crowd is doing anything in London and don't mind me tagging along, I'd love to hear about it. And I'd be fascinated to hear about the New Year plans of anyone living in more exciting places, too.

Vic Fluro, Tuesday, 23 December 2008 12:06 (seventeen years ago)

I'm taking the bus from Boston to New York on New Year's Eve, God help me, and joining in whatever plans my best friend there is organizing. It may just be four or five of us drinking wine in her apartment, which would make me pretty happy.

NYE has always been hard for me especially when it's been a good year (harder to leave) and as I get older, I just get more and more afraid the new year will bring deaths in the family.

In the 4th grade I did an "Audio Journal on Tape" thought that was so catchy, of my NYE and got recordings of family in conversation and did interviews then would sneak away to my bedroom and just go on and on about the passing of time, changes coming and getting older and waxing nostalgic and how I was afraid of people I loved dying etc... it's so down and sad for a nine year old. I haven't changed. There was a time in my 20's when I went to parties and threw parties and thought I was over sad NYE's but then it all returned in 1999. Turned out my parents divorced and those holiday gatherings stopped, they are what I remember the most from childhood too, food, music but not feeling like it would go on forever.

This year though, I have my own small family to spend it with and we are cooking and baking up all sorts of lil appetizers and goodies and will watch movies, eat, countdown and drink champagne. Made my calls.

11 p.m.: Wynton Marsalis with Vince Giordano: The Louis Armstrong Continuum — Music of the Hot Fives and Sevens. Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola, New York City. Presented by Jazz at Lincoln Center.

12:30 a.m.: Dee Alexander's Funkin' with Electric Soul: A Tribute to Jimi Hendrix and James Brown. South Shore Cultural Center, Chicago. Presented by the Jazz Institute of Chicago. (currently: "Lickin' Stick", and it's tasty--she's not trying to sing like JB, which is cool)

1:30 a.m.: Clark Terry and Red Holloway Ring in 1990. From Joe Segal's Jazz Showcase, Chicago. A reprise to celebrate the trumpet great — living in Arkansas, still teaching and dreaming up projects — and his brother on the bandstand, the late saxophonist Red Holloway (1927-2012).
Then they'll replay John Scofield's Uberjam, which is vamp on nice riffs with tiny diffentations, meh-ish
2:30 a.m.: Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band. Presented by the 55th Monterey Jazz Festival.

Hope it's a great year, for all of you.

Had a nice night, personally, went to a friend's house for dinner though it was only three of us since three other pals had the norovirus and couldn't make it. Turned out to be really fun though, probably my two closest friends and we got wasted on really good beer and wine, plus there was an amazing meal.

Then wandered into a pub, with no plans, for the countdown, which was surprisingly fine. They played Snoop Dogg as the first song of the year and I met some other friends by chance, went back to theirs and drank champagne. Don't remember getting home.

Today I'm going to cook something meaty and unhealthy for dinner and watch movies with a beer or two. Not back to work till Monday :)

Ah, I contracted that on New Year's Eve of 2002. Woke up thinking I just had a really bad hangover. If only. The first few days of 2003 were memorable in all the wrong ways.

I awoke anew an hour ago and am listening to Angel Haze while drinking honey ginger tea. Lovely morning.

What is it with Andre Rieu (ridiculously kitschy Dutch composer) all over the telly this Xmas/new years?

Blackeyed peas, cabbage and cornbread consumed. Now where the fuck's my money!

Forgot all about blackeyed peas this year...been in pj's all day too. Not off to a more ambious start. It'll get better.

*tera, Tuesday, 1 January 2013 23:44 (thirteen years ago)

no black eyed peas here, but my first cooking project of 2013 will be tinga de pollo with scrambled eggs, which is one of my favorite dishes at my neighborhood mexican restaurant.

basically, i'm cooking some bone-in chicken legs (browned lightly on the stove) in the dutch oven, with a mixture of tomato paste, chipotles in adobo sauce, mexican oregano, garlic, cumin, guajillo chili powder, salt and pepper, bay leaves, cilantro, and a little milk for extra liquid (recipes recommend chicken broth, but i didn't have any). giving it about 3 hours at 200 degrees, then i'm gonna shred the chicken with a fork and scramble it into the eggs.

Yeah i just noticed we have black eyed peas but they're dry and it would take until tomorrow to cook them.

Yesterday a friend of mine was so into eating tater tots, and we went out and got some, and it was great, but i had no idea if that is a tradition or not. Sounded like one!

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Tuesday, 1 January 2013 23:52 (thirteen years ago)

i like inventing new traditions. my tradition with my bf is going out for indian food on major holidays.

Threw a party at ours, played 'Got Your Money' at midnight, danced in the front room until 5am. Managed not to completely trash the house.

several friends down with dublin norovirus reported upthread, but enough of us remained to see it in safely. Spent today in a chinese restaurant that was promised mindblowing, my mind remained entirely untroubled by anything resembling blowing (or, indeed, flavour)

I should think that south asian would be a much safer bet in Dublin than chinese.

We did vegetarian Hoppin' John and stuffed cabbage leaves for dinner, and drank up the rest of the champagne from last night (since we barely stayed awake long enough to drink one NYE toast). We also did not leave the house today. No reason to. I figure the rest of the world will still be there tomorrow.

My NYE: my boyfriend and I DJed a ridiculous warehouse party in Baltimore at a space called The Coward Shoe. Also Djing: Co La, John from Art Department, and Amanda with video stuff by GSP (video dude for Dan Deacon and Animal Collective). Silly fun was had. Our countdown soundtrack was James Tenney's "For Ann (Rising)" slamming into Mariah Carey's version of "Auld Lang Syne". The PA was struggling and eventually crapped out for a while- subwoofer cables kinda weak, one speaker getting fried. Eventually PA got sorted and John Ehrens did a footwork/juke DJ set and some people with skills did the crazyleg stuff at blinding speed. My friend got so drunk that he was puking a *lot* so we drove him home and put him to bed then went back for more partying. Bummer: I lost my bowtie on the dancefloor and it was really pretty and made out of feathers. Good bit: not all that hungover today honestly. Memorable songs of the night: Backstreet Boys, Ghostbusters Theme and driving home to Ghost Town DJs "My Boo".

now that's how you do it.

when we were driving him home on a mission of mercy our drunk friend was kind of puking and drooling out the passenger window of the car and we pulled up to a stop and a very freaked out rich lady in an SUV looked at us and was clearly thinking that our car was full of loathsome disgusting savages and man she gave us a long cold look. that's when I realized that I had been so busy dj-ing that I hadn't had a single sip of champagne even though I arrived at the party with three bottles, most of which wound up in my sick buddy's stomach- maybe it's unsympathetic or smug but I'm kinda glad that I'm middle aged and able to pace myself because man I hate barfing

the tune was space, Wednesday, 2 January 2013 03:15 (thirteen years ago)

it's been quite a long while since i've puked while drunk. (i think the last time was in baltimore, actually.) it's not something i'm particularly nostalgic for.

trying to remember if i did last night or not

soma dude (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 2 January 2013 03:25 (thirteen years ago)

I mean if you're drunk and feel sick, then puking is a great thing to do and does bring relief, I just hate being in that situation- especially the paranoia about where to barf when you're not near a toilet bowl and that weird time-accelerating feeling that imminent vomiting induces.

+ I made steak bernaise, haricot verts and cucumber salad, and we had a bottle of Bougey-Cerdon
+ had a house party with many friends from Toronto visiting
+ "Come on a cone" into countdown
+ s1ocki's DJ night
+ walking in the snow swigging cognac
- my friend got roofied
- feel absolutely brutal today, can't think straight or socialize
+ had monte cristo sandwiches for lunch, sausages and bubble + squeak for dinner
+ still feel like a butt, but a happy and well-fed butt
