Well, the reason this is a New Years resolution is because I'm totally lazy and haven't read that much and there are probably better people to ask around here, BUT, _A Candle In The Dark_ by Carl Sagan is a good starter if you want to get really pumped about how great and wonderful science is. I'm told his book _Cosmos_ is a really good read, too. I've got a few by Stephen Jay Gould and Daniel Dennett laying around I mean to finish. Umm. QED by Richard Feynman is good for quantum physics junk w/o all the dippy eastern mystical conjecture (which is neat and all but gets a bit y'know...)
Umm...yeah other people probably have more/better recommendations but hey
― retrovaporized nebulizer (╓abies), Thursday, 31 December 2009 21:03 (sixteen years ago)
My gf has a subscription to a magazine called Nature which is a weekly science publication and seems pretty awesome. She's more into bio-chem / neural chemistry stuff and I just like to think about how big the universe is and stare dumbly into the distance, but it's cool to have some modicum of common ground.
― retrovaporized nebulizer (╓abies), Thursday, 31 December 2009 21:06 (sixteen years ago)
Also make some legit paintings, exhibit them
― WARS OF ARMAGEDDON (Karaoke Version) (Sparkle Motion), Thursday, 31 December 2009 21:06 (sixteen years ago)
Nature is a hard core peer reviewed journal and I would not necessarily recommend non-scientists spending mad cash on it. Even scientist usually spend grant dollars on it and not personal mad cash.
Richard Rhodes' The Making of the Atomic Bomb is one of my all time science+history favorites (one of my favorite books in general iirc).
― quincie, Thursday, 31 December 2009 21:21 (sixteen years ago)
Yes, should probably be pointed out that Nature's a pretty $expensive$ subscription but cool if you have access to it. Making note of this Richard Rhodes book, I've been wanting to find something good on the Manhattan Project and alla that, thanks.

New Scientist is a pretty good read (weekly magazine) and covers a wide range of stuff. I read The Stuff Of Thought a while back and it's pretty good - linguistics might not seem the most interesting subject but it makes you think about how we think.

My 2015 resolution was to quit smoking, and so far so good - I'm very grateful this is working out.
For 2016 I want to try something a bit more 'abstract', maybe less realistic.
I want to become better at disagreeing with the world - I want to spend less time arguing with friends and family, I want to be better at accepting that I can't make everyone feel the way I feel and that the attempt is often pointless. I don't want to lose my ideological/aesthetic passions, but I want to become better at accepting that the world often disagrees with me.
How can I practice this and how can I set some kind of resolution goal to help me know if I improve?
