i don't normally get into that shite, but this year i have TWO resolutions

1) to give up drinking

2) to become a more peaceful person.

whats yours?

di, Wednesday, 26 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

none. because they always fall flat for me.

(that doesn't mean i'm not going to make some concerted attempts at self-improvment this year.)

jess, Wednesday, 26 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

make them get my student mail account working. I cant check my e- mail every 5 minutes and damn it, it HURTS

Menelaus Darcy, Wednesday, 26 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

This New Year's resolution is to loose a few pounds. ( With God's help) Diets don't do a thing for me as I am a muncher. !

Gale Deslongchamps, Wednesday, 26 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I never intend to follow mine, but I do come up with one just to tell everone during new years eve. Makes me feel less like an ass least they realize Im perfect just the way I am.

Mr Noodles, Wednesday, 26 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I already completed my New Years resolution, and it's not even New Years yet! I'm a very prompt person by inclination.

charles, Thursday, 27 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

eat fewer crisps and drink less BOUZE and do some yoga before my back is permanently fucked. be nicer to everyone and tolerant towards crap drivers. watch Lord of the Rings 4 MORE TIMES!!!!!!!! i love it, i do.

katie, Thursday, 27 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

There is no excuse for tolerance of crap drivers, especialy those who don't understand the rules governing yellow boxes

Ed, Thursday, 27 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i want to lose a stone

anthony, Thursday, 27 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

see Ed, the old me would have agreed with you. but yesterday as we were driving home (i don't drive by the way!) there were soooo many crap drivers on the road - swervers, speeders, impatient ones, doddering ones, just plaing STUPID ones, that i got all upset and started shouting and making v signs and saying that driving tests should be repeated every year for the first 5 yrs of car ownership and really getting quite worked up. and then boyfwiend pointed out that he's the one that's driving and really all my shouting is distracting him, and if the crapness of the driving all around is not bothering him, why then it should not bother me, especially since if i go on like that i shall get a heart attack. so i decided to trust in karma and that all the bad drivers will get splatted in the great pile-up of reincarnation, etc etc.

of course this is all a huge steaming pile of hippy nonsense and the next time i am out on the road i will start ranting and raving. really some of the people out there shouldn't be ALLOWED to have cars, etc etc.

katie, Thursday, 27 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

so who wants to come with me to see lord of the rings again then huh HUH???!?!

katie, Thursday, 27 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Katie, which yoga things help the back? I may be in need myself.

but anyway, resolutions are to lose two stone, carry on giving up smoking (not had one now for a week and a half), read more, write more and learn more.

chris, Thursday, 27 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

chris, i think all of it just generally makes your joints and ligaments stronger and more supple and stretches your muscles. my mum's neck problem has all but cleared up since she started yoga.

katie, Thursday, 27 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I won't have to wear a leotard will I? that would make people ill.

chris, Thursday, 27 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i bloody hope you don't have to wear one! cos no-one's getting me into a leotard! i think that tracky bottoms and a t shirt will do, though remember that you may have to stand on your head or shoulders and the t shirt may fall down (or up!)thus revealing body- bits. the other embarrassing thing is that certain positions may encourage wind to er, emerge. though this i'm told is quite normal!

katie, Thursday, 27 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

eek! belly flashing and flatulence! I may be doing this on my own in the comfort of my own home to spare blushes.

chris, Thursday, 27 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

forgot another one:

"Nick Dastoor must pay for what he has done. This year I will hunt down and destroy him".

chris, Thursday, 27 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Damn.

N., Thursday, 27 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mine are to listen to MORE SKA. And to get a decent job. I like the SKA one more. BLACKBERRY BRANDY!

Sarah, Thursday, 27 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I plan to be more constructive and just exist on whatever.

james, Thursday, 27 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

To be nicer to Dastoor, the manboob.

Sarah, Thursday, 27 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

And to learn how to play musical instruments properly, and get lots of long term plans and projects done. I would also like to study photography. And decide if further further education is a wise thing to do. Tidy up more regularly. Not wear the same pair of jeans for more than 3 weeks. Eat less junk food.

james, Thursday, 27 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Do exercise to prevent further development of manboobs

RickyT, Thursday, 27 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i have heard that cleaning the bathroom is excellent exercise for the pectorals and thus prevents manboob development... :D

katie, Thursday, 27 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

D

N., Thursday, 27 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Alright, I'll clean the sodding bathroom when I get back.

RickyT, Thursday, 27 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

but it will be worth it, rickyT! not only will we have a shiny sparkling bathroom BUT you will also look like Buff Action Hero! now grab that Toilet Duck!

katie, Thursday, 27 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My new year's resolution is to take people aside and tell them 'as a friend' that they have a body odour problem, whether they have or not.

N., Thursday, 27 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

my new year's resolution is to take people aside and tell them 'as a friend' that they have a manboobs problem, whether they have or not.

katie, Thursday, 27 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Does this include women?

N., Thursday, 27 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

but of course! :)

katie, Thursday, 27 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hank and I decided one of the worst insults you could levy at a woman was to say she had manboobs. We decided this after seeing a woman with some standing at the bus stop.

Samantha, Thursday, 27 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't really have any but there's no harm in making them up.

1) write things i like, esp. songs
2) lose 10 pounds
3) find a place to wear slut clothes and not look out of place (i.e. not school)

Maria, Thursday, 27 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

1.)Whisper backwards
2.)Scream consonants.
3.)Quote from Abba tunes in Spanish.

helenfordsdale, Thursday, 27 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Manboobs indeed.

Two resolutions -- finally join the Sparks fan club (hell, I've been running the mailing list all these years!) and do more writing, based on the ease of my novel experiment and the nice reactions I got from it.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 27 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My resolutions are to do more writing, destroy Nick Dastoor, and a secret one that cannot be named.

Nicole, Thursday, 27 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Get a job.

Go out 3 nights a week again.

Do my assignments any other time but the day they are due.

Ensure I don't spend next summer in Dublin.

And others that are private.

Ronan, Thursday, 27 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Di I can cope with you not drinking but must you become peaceful? My News Years resolution is to live up to the Best Princess Grrrls Annual code of etiquette and conduct.

ducklingmonster, Thursday, 27 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

and what would that code of conduct and etiquette be, duckling?

menelaus wants to pick your brain on some disturbing gossip she heard yesterday, BTW.

maria, you should get a band together. then you can write songs and perform them in slutty clothes.

di, Thursday, 27 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

oh i will still be as brash and bolshy as ever, and due to my new pedal i don't think there will be a hell of a lot of peace in my flat. fear not, i meant peaceful in the moral sense, not in the volume sense.

di, Thursday, 27 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well that is a relief Di. Thee Best Princess Grrrls Annual code of conduct & etiquette shall be written as my year unfolds. I may, on occassion, dish out pointers where I see fit on a need to know basis. So there .

ducklingmonster, Thursday, 27 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

1) lots of stuff that sounds like self-pitying solipsism, but is depressingly real

2) Get job

3) lose a stone

4) discover that somewhere inside of me there's a creative centre just waiting to unleash itself on humpaint (that was supposed to read "humanity", but I think I've just created a rather decent new word)

5) Hose down Nick Dastoor and employ him. I think that's what it was.

Mark C, Friday, 28 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

1) to kill more people

2) to get more publicity than that fucking foetus did last year....thanks bill!

Geoff, Friday, 28 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

well, duckling, as long as you bear in mind that i am already perfect! but i can't wait to hear you dishing out advice to everyone else.

di, Friday, 28 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

duckling! help me! I am a disgrace to the community. there is a child in my house and I want to kill it

"Read books about science to dazzle budding scientist girlfriend and also because the universe rules" is probably my favorite, I have no budding scientist girlfriend but still want to do this. (Been meaning to read books about science forever though. Any recs?)

(Been meaning to read books about science forever though. Any recs?)

Well, the reason this is a New Years resolution is because I'm totally lazy and haven't read that much and there are probably better people to ask around here, BUT, _A Candle In The Dark_ by Carl Sagan is a good starter if you want to get really pumped about how great and wonderful science is. I'm told his book _Cosmos_ is a really good read, too. I've got a few by Stephen Jay Gould and Daniel Dennett laying around I mean to finish. Umm. QED by Richard Feynman is good for quantum physics junk w/o all the dippy eastern mystical conjecture (which is neat and all but gets a bit y'know...)

Umm...yeah other people probably have more/better recommendations but hey

retrovaporized nebulizer (╓abies), Thursday, 31 December 2009 21:03 (sixteen years ago)

My gf has a subscription to a magazine called Nature which is a weekly science publication and seems pretty awesome. She's more into bio-chem / neural chemistry stuff and I just like to think about how big the universe is and stare dumbly into the distance, but it's cool to have some modicum of common ground.

retrovaporized nebulizer (╓abies), Thursday, 31 December 2009 21:06 (sixteen years ago)

Also make some legit paintings, exhibit them

WARS OF ARMAGEDDON (Karaoke Version) (Sparkle Motion), Thursday, 31 December 2009 21:06 (sixteen years ago)

Nature is a hard core peer reviewed journal and I would not necessarily recommend non-scientists spending mad cash on it. Even scientist usually spend grant dollars on it and not personal mad cash.

Richard Rhodes' The Making of the Atomic Bomb is one of my all time science+history favorites (one of my favorite books in general iirc).

quincie, Thursday, 31 December 2009 21:21 (sixteen years ago)

Yes, should probably be pointed out that Nature's a pretty $expensive$ subscription but cool if you have access to it. Making note of this Richard Rhodes book, I've been wanting to find something good on the Manhattan Project and alla that, thanks.

retrovaporized nebulizer (╓abies), Thursday, 31 December 2009 21:27 (sixteen years ago)

New Scientist is a pretty good read (weekly magazine) and covers a wide range of stuff. I read The Stuff Of Thought a while back and it's pretty good - linguistics might not seem the most interesting subject but it makes you think about how we think.

Not the real Village People, Thursday, 31 December 2009 22:32 (sixteen years ago)

1. eat 5 servings of fruit and/or vegetables every day
2. be more romantic with my lady (2010 is our 10 year anniversary aka 'year of romance')

I actually made a plan of what I want to achieve this year musically! Not sure if this counts as a resolution as such though.

JAN-MARCH
finish solo MiniMoog album
finish MiniMoog collab with Swiss guys
"write" + record Takemitsu cover album
write new material for the band I'm in with the guys
finish writing the next Film Music album

APRIL-JULY
record the next Film Music album
write more material for the band I'm in with the guys, play some gigs. Also think of a name for the band.
record Kenny covers 7"
finish 2nd solo MiniMoog album

AUGUST-DECEMBER
write + record zeuhl album
maybe play live solo

Also try and get some of this shit actually released.
I get the feeling I'll achieve less than 25% of this but I may as well hope.
Plus my annual NY resolution : learn to drive.

I recorded 22 last year. As to whether they're any good however...

I can barely get my ass out of bed most days and you recorded 22 albums? Regardless of the quality the sheer number makes that a fucking feat in my opinion.

If you chose the best song on each of the 22 albums, you'd have a double CD best of for 2008. Dang.

(xpost) Thanks. Everyone has a quota of terrible songs in them, I'm just trying to get through them as quickly as possible so that I can get onto the better stuff.
Those sound like cool music projects Matt #2.

I never get around to this...

Well the Moog stuff is mostly done (bar tedious editing), so really it's "only" 4 albums. I'd settle for finishing 1 or 2 of them in reality.

Jeez Just1n3, thanks for providing me a major impetus to actually try to fulfill a new year's resolution! I sent you an email saying that I'd be back in touch with you whenever I actually had a comic I was really proud of. I've been emailing a friend of mine who is a fantastic artist to see if he's interested in collaborating with me on something this year. Hopefully by the end of the year we'll be an unstoppable duo.

Oh hey Maria! The Sagan book I recommended upthread is actually called The Demon-Haunted World and I'm a fool.

My resolution: date and relate smarter, no matter how much I am afraid of the short-term consequences (angering people, precipitating fights or blow-ups, disharmony). Keeping the peace is not worth keeping myself down and I must stop doing it. Applies to some friendships as well.

I actually made a resolution the other day too. I need to put on a more confident face and stop expressing my insecurities about myself, my personality, and my social and academic abilities if I can, because I think they're more a combination of self-doubt and self-fulfilling-prophecy than actual justified fears.

I seem to have made a lot of small resolutions this year.

1. Lose some more weight, keep the gym routine going etc: (6st 4lbs so far!)
2. Keep a notebook
3. Play more gigs
4. Get rid of pack-rat clutter that I don't need (ie. big box of singles up teh loft that I never, ever look at or listen to)
5. Be less short-tempered wrt stupid small things
6. Finish watching all the HBO type things that I seem to be precisely one third of the way through (also watch more good movies/docs in general)
7. Stop thinking in terms of 'catching up' with something, either do it or don't do it
8. Work on the low level ocd
9. Work on week nightly monging in front of Sky/Internet

one year passes...

1. to always use the correct spelling of 'probably'
2. to use the word 'awesome' less & 'amazing' more
3. to complete basic EMS program with good grade
4. ...finish a novel, maybe? maybe even two?

some of the ppl in this thread are AMAZING!

two years pass...

My 2015 resolution was to quit smoking, and so far so good - I'm very grateful this is working out.

For 2016 I want to try something a bit more 'abstract', maybe less realistic.

I want to become better at disagreeing with the world - I want to spend less time arguing with friends and family, I want to be better at accepting that I can't make everyone feel the way I feel and that the attempt is often pointless. I don't want to lose my ideological/aesthetic passions, but I want to become better at accepting that the world often disagrees with me.

How can I practice this and how can I set some kind of resolution goal to help me know if I improve?
