Preseason is over. Real games finally return after 16 months on Wednesday night and with all the changes and player movement things should be rather interesting. I can't wait to see how my Pittsburgh Penguins will fare with their offseason signings (not to mention some kid named Sidney Crosby...). Anyway, it'll be nice just to be able to watch hockey again. Hopefully I'm not the only one left here who still cares about such things.

Stan Fields (Stan Fields), Monday, 3 October 2005 22:27 (twenty years ago)

Hockey? Isn't that some sort of Canadian thingie?

Aimless (Aimless), Monday, 3 October 2005 22:31 (twenty years ago)

those penguins are mine.

my name is john. i reside in chicago. (frankE), Monday, 3 October 2005 22:34 (twenty years ago)

i'm pretty damn excited, since i've missed THREE seasons of hockey (living in the UK last 3 years). mind you, i live in toronto, so i don't have a lot to be excited about except wondering when mushy head will get knocked out and seeing us make a half-assed decent effort throughout the season and the first round of the playoffs only to completely fall apart in the end. hooray. GO LEAFS GO.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Monday, 3 October 2005 22:55 (twenty years ago)

I live in the Toronto area, so resuming my hatred of the Leafs is another thing I'm looking forward to. I don't imagine they'll even make it to the first round of the playoffs this year.

Stan Fields (Stan Fields), Monday, 3 October 2005 23:03 (twenty years ago)

i was thinking the same thing.
that will be the kicker - it will be their worst reg. season in ages, i'll stop caring, and then the fuckers will go all the way...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Monday, 3 October 2005 23:17 (twenty years ago)

I was feeling pretty negative, but I think the Leafs could surprise if they manage to stay healthy. Tellqvist is beginning to show signs that he can play at the top level, Jason Allison and Jeff O'Neil have a lot to prove nd are going to want to stick it to their former teams and Alexander Steen is going to be a star. Andropov could also become a more consistent offensive threat now that he's playing on a line with Sundin. Whatever, as long as they get a chance to beat Ottawa in the playoffs again, I'll be happy.

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 00:38 (twenty years ago)

I like the rejiggered Penguins, but they got pasted in some preseason games and ended up with a 2-7 record. That kinda sucks, Stan. I also worry about the ex-Flyer factor.

ng-unit, Tuesday, 4 October 2005 02:35 (twenty years ago)

i was at the caps-pens game last friday--lemieux, recchi, leclair, crosby, thibault and gonchar weren't dressed. rico fata was there, andre roy beat the shit out of someone, there was one other guy i recognized... anyway, i don't think the preseason really has any bearing on their prospects.

the real question is: when will the holding penalties *stop* being called? next week, by christmas, or only come playoff time?

mookieproof (mookieproof), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 03:02 (twenty years ago)

oh, and yes, go pens

mookieproof (mookieproof), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 03:02 (twenty years ago)

i've got a massive hard on for the new season to start. go bruins.

bingo (Chris V), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 08:44 (twenty years ago)

Are the Pens going with Leclair-Crosby-Recchi as their first line and Lemieux as their...#2 centre?

I like the emphasis on interdivisional rivalries, but it's not gonna be easy with Ottawa, Boston and Toronto.

I really really really hate the idea of shootouts (please tell me that's not in effect during playoffs), but I guess we'll see how that works out.

The only way to speed up the game (and I'm sure the officials will give it a good shot for a few weeks, but c'mon) is to eliminate a few teams and getting rid of some players with no business in the league.

alex in montreal (alex in montreal), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 11:42 (twenty years ago)

I like the rejiggered Penguins, but they got pasted in some preseason games and ended up with a 2-7 record. That kinda sucks, Stan. I also worry about the ex-Flyer factor.

I'm not too worried about their preseason record. As was already mentioned, they weren't dressing their top lineup very often, and Lemieux looked good with 11 points in 4 games. Hopefully Leclair can stay healthy, the other ex-Flyer, Recchi should be fine. Just think about what their powerplay could be like once they get going....

Are the Pens going with Leclair-Crosby-Recchi as their first line and Lemieux as their...#2 centre?

I think their top two lines are:
Lemieux - Malone - Palffy
LeClair - Crosby - Recchi

I really really really hate the idea of shootouts (please tell me that's not in effect during playoffs)

Shootouts are only used in the regular season. Playoff OT stays the same.

Stan Fields (Stan Fields), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 14:08 (twenty years ago)

i'm not wholly against the shootout. the logistics of it seem a bit funky, but the potential end of game cliffhanger should be interesting.

also- all the pens love here warms my heart. are y'all (ex-)burghians?

my name is john. i reside in chicago. (frankE), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 14:23 (twenty years ago)

Is this the year that mad genius Bob Clarke gets shitcanned?

Jimmy Mod wants you to tighten the strings on your corset (The Famous Jimmy Mod), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 15:16 (twenty years ago)

d'you still get 1 point for an overtime/shootout loss? is the overtime still 4-on-4? are those weird lines angling back from the goal line to the back boards marking a space outside of which the goalie can't play the puck? (i keep catching them out of the corner of my eye and thinking they're broken sticks)

i am an ex-burghian, yes.

i'd say bobby clarke's had a pretty good summer, getting forsberg and several immense defensemen...

mookieproof (mookieproof), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 17:08 (twenty years ago)

i saw the Leafs-Sens pre-season game at the ACC which was kinda 'meh'. mostly just phoning it in. belak fought mcgrattan 2 minutes in, which was a nice way to start, i thought. and hoffman, whoever the hell he is, got pummelled by ward in the 2nd. nice try, new guy.

i guess the marketing types set up shootouts during preseason regardless of the game's score to get the public excited about it, and i admit it was fun to watch. mind you this particular shootout was moot and half-assed.

weirdest part of that game for me: seeing ron maclean watching the game from a red, end section. jesus, couldn't someone get dude some platinums? although maybe he likes it up in the reds - closer to the 'real people'. i.e. the corporate types that go for the $150 tickets instead of the $200 ones.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 17:11 (twenty years ago)

the game was a lot 'quicker' though, with the allowed two-line passes and less icing calls. no complaints from me on that one.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 17:12 (twenty years ago)

out of curiosity, will the cbc lockout be affecting hockey night in canada?

mookieproof (mookieproof), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 17:13 (twenty years ago)

d'you still get 1 point for an overtime/shootout loss? is the overtime still 4-on-4?

OT is still 4-4 then shootout after 5 min.

from the NHL rulebook:

# During regular season games, if at the end of the three (3) regular twenty (20) minute periods, the score shall be tied, each team shall be awarded one point in the League standings.

The teams will then play an additional overtime period of not more than five (5) minutes with the team scoring first declared the winner and being awarded an additional point. The overtime period shall be played with each team at a numerical strength of four (4) skaters and one (1) goalkeeper.

(NOTE 1) The overtime period will be commenced immediately following a one (1) minute rest period during which the players will remain on the ice. The teams will not change ends for the overtime period.

(NEW for 2005-06) (NOTE 2) When regulation time ends and the teams are 5 on 3, teams will start overtime 5 on 3. Once player strength reaches 5 on 4 or 5 on 5, at the next stoppage of play, player strength is adjusted to 4 on 3 or 4 on 4, as appropriate

(NEW for 2005-06) (NOTE 3) When regulation ends and teams are 4 on 4 teams will start overtime 3 on 3.

(NEW for 2005-06) (NOTE 4) At no time will a team have less than three players on the ice. This may require a fifth skater to be added if a two-man advantage occurs.

(NOTE 5) A team shall be allowed to pull its goalkeeper in favor of an additional skater in the overtime period. The goalkeeper may not return to his position until the next stoppage of play in overtime. Any attempt by the goalkeeper to return to his position prior to the next stoppage of play (on the fly) shall be deemed to be an illegal substitution and a bench minor penalty shall be assessed for having an ineligible player. However, should that team lose the game during the time in which the goalkeeper has been removed, it would forfeit the automatic point gained in the tie at the end of regulation play, except if the goalkeeper has been removed at the call of a delayed penalty against the other team.
# (NEW for 2005-06) During regular season games, if the game remains tied at the end of the five (5) minute overtime period, the teams will proceed to a shootout. The rules governing the shootout shall be the same as those listed under Rule 30 - Penalty Shot.

(NOTE1) The Teams will not change ends for the shootout. The visiting Team will shoot first. The teams shall alternate shots.

(NOTE 2) Three (3) players from each team shall participate in the shootout and they shall proceed in such order as the Coach selects. All players are eligible to participate in the shootout unless they are serving a ten minute misconduct or have been assessed a game misconduct, gross misconduct or match penalty.

(NOTE 3) Once the shootout begins, the goalkeeper cannot be replaced unless he is injured. No warm up shall be permitted for a substitute goalkeeper.

(NOTE 4) Each team will be given three shots, unless the outcome is determined earlier in the shootout. After each team has taken three shots, if the score remains tied, the shootout will proceed to a "sudden death" format. No player may shoot twice until everyone who is eligible has shot.

(NOTE 5) Regardless of the number of goals scored during the shootout portion of overtime, the final score recorded for the game will give the winning team one more goal than its opponent, based on the score at the end of overtime.

(NOTE 6) The losing goalkeeper will not be charged with the extra goal against. The player scoring the game winning goal in the shootout will not be credited with a goal scored in his personal statistics.

(NOTE 7) If a team declines to participate in the shootout procedure the game will be declared as a shootout loss for that team. If a team declines to take a shot it will be declared as "no goal".
# Special conditions for the duration and number of periods of playoff games shall be arranged by the Board of Governors.

I personally liked it when the rules weren't labrynthine... more footballization of hockey.

are those weird lines angling back from the goal line to the back boards marking a space outside of which the goalie can't play the puck? (i keep catching them out of the corner of my eye and thinking they're broken sticks)

Goalie can't play the puck in the corners now, which means the goalies just pick the pucks up before the goal line andd wing them down the ice.

i'd say bobby clarke's had a pretty good summer, getting forsberg and several immense defensemen...

I hope not!

CBC lockout was resolved yesterday. Games should be shown as normal.

Funny how the lockout ended just before Hockey Night in Canada, eh?

And going to Rrie?

Jimmy Mod wants you to tighten the strings on your corset (The Famous Jimmy Mod), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 19:09 (twenty years ago)

i guess the marketing types set up shootouts during preseason regardless of the game's score to get the public excited about it

don't forget, they haven't been a part of NHL play so the league needed to try it out for themselves. i.e. figuring out during the exhibitions the best way to prep the ice before the shootout to cut down on skaters losing the puck to bad ice. if they were learning those lessons and tinkering with that during the season then that would be lousy.

gspm (gspm), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 21:22 (twenty years ago)

Calgary is going to shock the world! Was reading through their roster, and they're solid at every position. One of the best goalies in the league playing behind one of the best defences - and a whole lot of firepower up front. It would be great to see a Cup in Canada again - as long as it's not it Ottawa. That would be unacceptable.

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 23:25 (twenty years ago)

Agreed. I love poking fun at my diehard Leaf fan friends and openly take pleasure when it all goes terribly wrong for them.
But not if it means cheering for the sens.
no sir.

Leafs and Sens are going to a shootout. I guess it is more exciting, especially for more casual fans, but what a stupid way to decide a game.

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Thursday, 6 October 2005 01:47 (twenty years ago)

So.. I don't understand. Do the Leafs get a point for that?

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Thursday, 6 October 2005 02:32 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, they get one.

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Thursday, 6 October 2005 02:34 (twenty years ago)

These new rules are great. No longer can you get ahead 1-0 and sit back on it for the next forty minutes.

Also the no-shooting-the-puck-into-the-crowd rule is so good I'm surprised they didn't think of it twenty years ago. It may take months before we see the full implications of how this affects the game.

The goalie trapezoid thing is great too. I'm guessing it will be especially good come April when everyone is so exhausted that a game sometimes consists of little more than the goalies going into the corners and firing it down the ice.

fields of salmon (fieldsofsalmon), Thursday, 6 October 2005 04:08 (twenty years ago)

I'm glad they put a stop to the getting-ever-more-idiotic-by-the-day situation with the goalie eqipment myself.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Thursday, 6 October 2005 04:12 (twenty years ago)

thing is, changing the equipment is only going to account to maybe 5-10 goals over the course of a season. It's a show move to make it seem like the best atheletes on the ice AREN'T the goalies < / goalie >

Jimmy Mod wants you to tighten the strings on your corset (The Famous Jimmy Mod), Thursday, 6 October 2005 04:14 (twenty years ago)

to wit: a goalie with a save % of .93 (Roloson last year) stops 88-90 shots with the middle of the pad/glove/crotch/what have you. Decreasing the size of the goalie's pads by an inch really doesn't change that much. The goalies that WILL notice the change are the Thibauts of the world who are 5'4" and 175 lbs and need all the help they can get. Brodeur and Turco and Kolzig and etc. (i.e real #1 goalies) will be just fine.

Jimmy Mod wants you to tighten the strings on your corset (The Famous Jimmy Mod), Thursday, 6 October 2005 04:19 (twenty years ago)

Oh i know. I just felt it was getting silly with some of them.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Thursday, 6 October 2005 04:27 (twenty years ago)

C'mon, Thibault is a #1 goalie.

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Thursday, 6 October 2005 04:39 (twenty years ago)

xxpost-- I think it's as much about the look of the game as it is giving the mechanics of goaltending a little adjustment. The game was sometimes looking too crowded, the shapes too voluminous and indistinct—like a blocky 8-bit version of a much sleeker game. The new jerseys I have heard about (but that did not make an appearance tonight) will also help the game seem quicker, more modern, and the play surface more open.

fields of salmon (fieldsofsalmon), Thursday, 6 October 2005 04:45 (twenty years ago)

C'mon, Thibault is a #1 goalie.

In a magical fantasy land...

Jimmy Mod wants you to tighten the strings on your corset (The Famous Jimmy Mod), Thursday, 6 October 2005 05:06 (twenty years ago)

Thibault's career summary:

227(W)-217(L)-68(T) GAA: 2.67

-played in the 2002-2003 All-star game.

Not Hall-of-fame numbers by any stretch, but he's been relatively solid throughout his career. Why all the hate for le petit Jocelyn?

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Thursday, 6 October 2005 06:46 (twenty years ago)

The pressure cooker in Montreal totally rocked Thibault. Poor guy, he had to immediately fill Patrick Roy's shoes.

Then again, you'd like your #1 goalie to be mentally tough.

alex in montreal (alex in montreal), Thursday, 6 October 2005 12:35 (twenty years ago)

And the pressure cooker in fucking QUEBEC totally rocked Thibault. How he's in the league and Stephane Fiset ISN'T is beyond me.

Playoff line: 17(GP) 839(MIN) 4(W) 11(L) 0(THERE ARE NO TIES IN THE PLAYOFFS) 50(GA) 0(SO) 3.57(GAA)

Jimmy Mod wants you to tighten the strings on your corset (The Famous Jimmy Mod), Thursday, 6 October 2005 13:45 (twenty years ago)

(I don't hate him, mind, but I'd rather see Fleury learn to win at the pro level then waste another year in JR or MJ or wherever the hell he is now...)

Jimmy Mod wants you to tighten the strings on your corset (The Famous Jimmy Mod), Thursday, 6 October 2005 13:46 (twenty years ago)

Fleury is in the AHL where he'll supposedly be better off being the starter there than as the backup in the NHL. He could also possibly make $3 million in bonuses in the NHL, so Caron is a bit cheaper to have as a backup. For now....

Anyway it was great watching hockey again last night. I really like the rule changes. The new NHL is wonderful.

Stan Fields (Stan Fields), Thursday, 6 October 2005 14:56 (twenty years ago)

also, i think Caron would have been exposed to waivers had the Pens sent him to the A, which was not the case with Fleury

Stan Fields (Stan Fields), Monday, 10 October 2005 13:18 (twenty years ago)

not sure i like the new look NHL. No physical play, and barely any fights. I don't want to see some shitty european version of hockey i want the days of the big bad bruins and the broad street bullies. i don't understand why they want to get fighting out of the game so bad, i think fans want to see a fight rather than a gay shootout. am i in the minority here?

bingo (Chris V), Monday, 10 October 2005 13:36 (twenty years ago)

I like a good fight as much as the next person but I think if they were really trying to get rid of fighting they'd go to some pretty drastic measures to do so. There's still plently of room for physical play without all the clutching/grabbing/etc.

Stan Fields (Stan Fields), Monday, 10 October 2005 21:27 (twenty years ago)

im no fan of the neutral zone trap and im glad they got rid of the red line for that....yes the action is fast paced but its a constant powerplay. I get bored easily without some gloves dropping.

bingo (Chris V), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 09:08 (twenty years ago)

You can still fight and you'll see more of it once the players know the limits and ESPECIALLY once teams play each other for the 5th time this season. Everyone is still in a feeling-out process. They're not trying to get rid of the Big Bad Bruins or the Broad Street Bullies (which is not any more representative of "real hockey" than the days of the Flying Frenchmen, btw), they're trying to get rid of the Minnesota Wild/New Jersey Devils style of defensive hockey.

That said, the new rules do advantage the Canadiens 'cause they can speed through the offensive zone without getting mugged.

alex in montreal (alex in montreal), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 13:15 (twenty years ago)

i don't mind a fight, at least when it's pros who are doing it. (i remember a mcsorley-probert bout in maybe '94 that went on for minutes--sportscenter let it run in a little window and went on with the rest of the broadcast.) but it certainly has nothing to do with why i watch hockey, and it kind of bothers me that it's felt necessary. i was at a preseason game in washington a few weeks ago and during a break some woman went into the crowd and asked some teenagers who their favorite cap was, then what their favorite part of the game was. they all burst out "teh fighting!"

if the league wanted to stop fighting, it easily could. you fight, you're gone for ten games. etc. and enough with the crap about oh, then there would be more stickwork or more bertuzzi-style muggings. call the game the way the rules are stated, be harsh with offenders, it would be fine. the nfl doesn't have these issues.

i love hockey for the speed, the moves, the passing. and there's plenty of violence even without fights. i don't suppose it really matters--the nhl is never going to be much bigger than it is in the us, or much smaller than it is in canada. but the gratuitous violence is what keeps the league just one notch above pro wrestling in most americans' minds.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 14:45 (twenty years ago)

the nfl doesn't have these issues.

do not compare to unwatchble sport.

No physical play, and barely any fights

I dunno, the games I've watched so far have been pretty physical, and there is definitely fighting going on. I'm perfectly happy to see refs call the stupid shit like grabs, hooks, etc. I've also seen quite a few good clean checks this season, so I think we're a far cry from being "European".

And alex OTM about the 'feeling-out process' - it's only the beginning of the season - give it time. I'm enjoying watching the games so far... (and that's saying a lot given the team I'm stuck supporting).

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 15:06 (twenty years ago)

No Barry Drunkrose? Bill Clement in the studio? no Erin Andrews rink-side? god, this OLN seems so ghetto. it's just not the same.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Monday, 7 November 2005 06:37 (twenty years ago)

Ovechkin is the real deal. I think he suffered more from the lockout than most, because a lot of the attention which should rightfully be his, is being lavished (not undeservingly) on Crosby. He would have had the spotlight to himself last year (assuming Crosby didn't make the jump from junior). The guy can do it all, and unlike Crosby he has no supporting cast and a real physical presence.

Boston dealt Thornton to San Jose in what must be one of the WORST TRADES EVER!

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Thursday, 1 December 2005 04:57 (twenty years ago)

yup, .25 cents on the fucking dollar. i have given up on this team. Go Senators.

bingo (Chris V), Thursday, 1 December 2005 11:30 (twenty years ago)

as much as i don't want to see Boston do too well, it's a shame because Thornton is obviously a Bruin... i know they were pissed at his being uneffective against Montreal during the last (two) playoffs, but i kinda felt bad (momentarily at least) that they were shitting on a guy who was injured whereas you could've pointed the finger at half the team.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Thursday, 1 December 2005 16:03 (twenty years ago)

yeah, I don't understand the logic behing this trade at all.

peter in montreal (spaces are allowed), Thursday, 1 December 2005 17:23 (twenty years ago)

not that i don't think that this is a terrible trade, but i guess the value of a good mobile defenseman has gone through the roof with the "new NHL" (not to mention that Boston has always been known for being thrifty). according to his TSN bio, Brad Stuart is a "very gifted skater", which is indispensible now that defensemen can't rely on their sticks as much anymore, and "makes excellent outlet passes" which can really help launch counterattacks more effectively. i don't think you'll find many defensemen like him available right now.

geez, now i want him playing for the habs.

alex in montreal (alex in montreal), Thursday, 1 December 2005 18:49 (twenty years ago)

Mobile defencemen are a very valuable commodity in the "new" NHL, but Thronton is a guy that you can build a team around. They would have had to get Bobby Orr circa 1971 in order for this to make any kind of sense. Never trade a franchise player. Besides being extremely dubious from a straight hockey point of view, this trade sends the message to fans in Boston, and the rest of the league, that the Bruins have given up and don't care about winning now, or anytime in the near future. This is going to haunt them for years to come.

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Friday, 2 December 2005 01:34 (twenty years ago)

again, i don't think this is a great trade, but just playing devil's advocate (and maybe some Bruins fans can shed some light here), but the point was that they didn't want Thornton as their franchise player. there are franchise players who aren't perceived as winners and given the playoff disappointments of the last few years, i think they wanted to nip this in the bud.

y'know, not to deny Thornton's enormous talent, but let's not forget about Patrice Bergeron. this is more or less his team now, and i think perhaps that's the way Boston saw it too.

Anyway, the season is more than halfway through and my Pittsburgh Penguins aren't very good, if being 29th out of 30 teams isn't good. Looks like they'll be getting another high pick in the draft.

alex in montreal (alex in montreal), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 04:05 (nineteen years ago)

Ovechkin is great! In all of the hoopla surrounding Crosby, he's often been overlooked. The kid is making fools out of veteran players on a regular basis. Dion Phaneuf is also having a fantastic season, and in any other year would be a frontrunner for the Calder. I have a hard time remembering a better crop of rookies.

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 04:40 (nineteen years ago)

Both Crosby and Ovechkin are out of their minds -- it's like having Gretzky and Lemieux starting their careers at the same time. Ovechkin does moves during games that we used to do while fucking around after practice...

My dislike for Ovechkin must have began during last year's World Junior tournament. I think he's a bit too cocky, although when you're as good a player as he is maybe you have the right to have a bit of a cocky side.

When talking about this years rookies don't forget about Marek Svatos in Colorado (26 goals, 14 assists). The lockout created a double cohort with rookies this season.

TSN had a bit about Fleury's bonus situation during the intermission of last night's NJ/STL game. If I recall correctly he's eligable for the bonuses after appearing in 25 games but most of them seem unattainable and the maximum he would probably earn would be $900,000. Still, Palffy's retirement will help because they definately budgeted for a playoff appearance (they're only 19 points out of the playoffs right now!!).

HOLY SHIT Theodore traded to Colorado for Aebischer. I kinda feel sorry for his last days here (man, when you haven't played in weeks and people still boo you at warm-up, that's rough) and I hope he blossoms elsewhere, but he really didn't have the mental toughness to last. A Huet-Aebischer tandem is really promising too.

New York Islanders get: D Denis Grebeshkov, LW Jeff Tambellini and conditional third-round pick

Los Angeles gets: RW Mark Parrish and D Brent Sopel

After the Colorado deal (which I love for Colorado) this one is the second best deal so far.

Jimmy Mod: The Prettiest Flower In The Pond (The Famous Jimmy Mod), Thursday, 9 March 2006 02:35 (nineteen years ago)

Aebischer
2005-06: 25-14-2/2.98/.900
2003-04: 32-19-9/2.09/.924
2002-03: -12-0/2.43/.916
2001-02: 13-6-0/1.88/.931

Theo
2005-06: 17-15-5/3.46/.881
2003-04: 33-28-5/2.27/.917
2002-03: 20-31-6/2.90/.908
2001-02: 30-24-10/2.11/.931

But more importantly, 1.9 millions vs 4.5 millions. I have no doubt that Theodore will do well in Colorado; it's just he wouldn't have in Montreal at this point.

alex in montreal (alex in montreal), Thursday, 9 March 2006 02:43 (nineteen years ago)

And yes, Aebischer has had a better team in front of him, so the stats might be deceptive... it's just that they not that radically different than Theodore's for the salary gap... and there's still questions about whether he can adapt to the new NHL, as one of the smaller goalies in the league.

Kovalev then skates with the puck into the Leafs zone, stickhandles through the defensemen and cuts towards the goalie's left, with the apparent intention to create a scoring chance. At the last minute, he lets go of the puck as this was simply a ploy and NAILS Tucker as payback)

Don't wanna see Montreal-Ottawa... I mean, I like to be optimistic like any Habs fan out there, but realistically I rather face the Rangers. And I don't buy the "Ottawa always choke in the playoffs" argument, especially since the team is kinda different (Hasek, Heatley) and the young players are now young veterans.

So what's this I hear about Colin Campbell possibly replacing Fergie Jr? Wouldn't that put him in a conflict-of-interest situation were he faced with a decision to suspend a Maple Leaf like, say, Darcy Tucker?

The Habs can take Ottawa. The Senators are beginning to tank at exactly the right time. They are riddled with injuries, and history has proven repeatedly that in spite of having all the necessary talent, they just don't have the heart to win in the playoffs. I'm sorry that Toronto could not give them their annual beating, but Montreal would be a more than adequate substitute.

Look at the goalies that are playing on the teams that are left. Edmonton, Ottawa, Anaheim, San Jose and Carolina are basically using backups. Buffalo, Colorado and Montreal are using guys who started around half their regular season games. Maybe you give Buffalo and Colorado a mulligan due to injury, but only Theodore is playoff tested. Only Calgary and New Jersey are relying on the guys who played the bulk of the regular season. I think Brodeur will be a huge advantage for the Devils through the rest of the playoffs.

That Canes/Devils game got increasingly awesomer. Goal with 20 seconds left, looks like Devils are going to tie up. GOAL WITH THREE SECONDS LEFT, WTF OVERTIME. And then the overtime goal where Broduer looks to play a shot that never gets off and the puck skirts under him unceremoniously. I'm liking the Canes as the plucky...overdogs.

My team finished one spot out of a playoff berth, their coach got fired, and I'm getting killed in the second round of my playoff pool. None of that matters however, because the Ottawa Senators are down 3-0! The hockey gods are finally smiling. I have never felt this degree of affection for the Buffalo Sabres. Perhaps no other team in professional sports chokes as consistently as the Sens do under pressure.

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Thursday, 11 May 2006 01:15 (nineteen years ago)

God I hate the entire Eastern Conference right now. You couldn't pick four more loathsome teams (hehe, except perhaps your team, j-rock).

No offence taken. I understand that hating the Leafs is the national past-time for people who live outside Toronto. I love the Canadiens though.

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Thursday, 11 May 2006 02:05 (nineteen years ago)

Nice, Edmonton still in it, beating the Sharks yesterday to cut the series lead to 2-1. They're about the only team I like that's left.

I was thinking about this, who would you pick for your team between Chris Pronger and Scott Niedermayer? Niedermayer is a fantastic and super-talented player but damn, Pronger is a rock... his play during the Detroit series especially really endeared him to me.

All of San Jose's best players are Canadian anyway, Toskala excepted. Booing anthems is tasteless, and pretty dumb given the make-up of the league nowadays.

ANAHEIM vs BUFFALO = TEEMU vs TEPPO

mookieproof (mookieproof), Monday, 15 May 2006 19:38 (nineteen years ago)

Don't blame Emery. He did let in some bad goals at inopportune times, but Ottawa's whole team has got a lot to answer for. His defence let him down bad time and time again. Pominville should never have got a shot off. What were Alfredsson and Redden doing on that play? A missing persons report should be filed for both Heatley and Havlat. I also wonder if Jason Spezza plans to avoid throwing a check for the entire duration of his NHL career? You suck Ottawa! Toronto may have stunk up the joint this year, but at least they didn't strut about pretending that the playoffs were a mere formality which lay between themselves and the Stanley Cup.

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Monday, 15 May 2006 23:55 (nineteen years ago)

well, it's true that pominville (and drury before him) should not get those kind of shots untouched, but dude's got to get across the crease. by no means do i blame him; it just seems that that's the kind of crazy save that needs to be made if you're going to go somewhere. for what it's worth, i thought ottawa largely outplayed buffalo the last two games (with occasional episodes of horrendous cycling in the ottawa zone). and while timid compared to the leaves, ottawa was certainly more goonish.

i'd feel happier about the 'canes if they were still the Whale. too bad ronnie francis isn't still there.

Jimmy Mod is a super idol of The MARS SPIRIT (The Famous Jimmy Mod), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 00:29 (nineteen years ago)

I am so stoked for the Canes (who're my home team) that I almost wanna pitch 'em to the assembled NHL Thread Massive - they're a very likeable team. Ignore the they-used-to-be-Hartford/hockey-ain't-native-to-the-South urge and focus on the team itself. It's full of likeable players! They don't play neutral zone trap all day long! I'm not saying they eschew it, either, nobody's got that kinda balls, but their run-and-gun is fun to watch. And Brindamour is SO well-utilized by this team; surrounded by decent-scoring young players instead of injury-prone limelight-hogs like Lindros, he can function as the name-brand part of a working line instead of The Slack Picker-Upper. Watching Cam Ward step up this year has been completely rad. Plus, the hurricane warning stuff (the black squares) on the jersey is awesome, even if the actual logo is dating badly even as I write this.

Carolina Hurricanes! Go go go!

when did that change? i grew up with the home team in white, and all of a sudden they've switched! and the multiple jerseys too: is this just a ploy to double everyone's merch sales? some teams even have multiple logos! although, i am happy to see the old canucks logo reappear. i hope they go back to the 'flaming skate' instead of the 'angry whale'.

the white jerseys on the road came about because trainers/equip. managers were complaining about having to carry so many 3rd jerseys and shit (to prepare for alternate 3rd odd-day ccolor clashes when the home team decided to weair their burger-king novelty jerseys) thru customs and via air-plane post 9/11 --- which doean't make a lick of sense and is a totally self-created problem. Not to take anything away from the players, most of whom have played their entire lives for a chance at a cup, but hockey means nothing to the average man on the street in Raleigh NC. For that reason, I'm sad that Buffalo didn't advance. Buffalo NY takes a lot of crap for being a dump, but those fans care. The same was true two years ago. While I was happy to see Andreychuk finally lift one, arena football got higher TV ratings than some of the games in Tampa. That's just plain wrong. It would have meant the absolute world to Calgary.

Go Oilers.

Cops divided on crowd control tactics
Published: Thursday, June 01, 2006

EDMONTON - A senior Edmonton police officer defied a gag order Wednesday and continued to speak out about his removal as commander of crowd control on Whyte Avenue.

Insp. Bryan Boulanger had been given a strict order Wednesday by Deputy Chief Mike Bradshaw not to publicly talk about either his removal or police strategies related to Oilers game celebrations on Whyte Avenue.

Boulanger was removed as crowd-control commander on Tuesday. He was replaced by Insp. Chris Caughell, the head of the public safety unit, also known as the riot squad [emphasis mine].

Boulanger reacted by telling local media outlets he had been "fired" from the job and that his firing was a "knee-jerk reaction" to the near-riot on Whyte Avenue on Saturday night after the Oilers beat the Anaheim Mighty Ducks to advance to the Stanley Cup final.
An estimated 30,000 people flooded Whyte Avenue and groups of drunken hooligans smashed store windows, threw bottles, climbed into trees and onto light posts, and lit several bonfires in the street.

As commander that night, Boulanger made the decision to keep police at a distance, reasoning that wading into the crowd in an attempt to restore order would only exacerbate the hooliganism.

Boulanger told local media outlets his decision to exercise restraint was at odds with the commanders of the riot squad, who he said wanted to use force to restore order. Boulanger said that was contrary to the principles of community policing . . .

etc. etc. etc.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 02:01 (nineteen years ago)

That dude was Steve Smith.

Jimmy Mod: NOIZE BOARD GRIL COMPARISON ANALYST (The Famous Jimmy Mod), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 02:02 (nineteen years ago)

really? for some reason i was thinking it was the guy who became a doctor, whose name i can't remember...

mookieproof (mookieproof), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 02:03 (nineteen years ago)

Gretzky handed him the Cup first the following year.

alex in montreal (alex in montreal), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 02:03 (nineteen years ago)

Steve Smith (from Glasgow) scored the own goal.

Jimmy Mod: NOIZE BOARD GRIL COMPARISON ANALYST (The Famous Jimmy Mod), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 02:03 (nineteen years ago)

didn't steve smith also bury gretzky in the '91 canada cup?

mookieproof (mookieproof), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 02:09 (nineteen years ago)

that was gary suter, i believe. him and smith might have played together in calgary.

alex in montreal (alex in montreal), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 02:12 (nineteen years ago)

oh god. roloson not coming back.

333333333333 (33333), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 02:14 (nineteen years ago)

Is that official? it had every look of two blown ligaments. Dudebro was a FA this year too.

Jimmy Mod: NOIZE BOARD GRIL COMPARISON ANALYST (The Famous Jimmy Mod), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 02:16 (nineteen years ago)

all my hockey memories, one guy off. thank you alex in mtl.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 02:16 (nineteen years ago)

mac t said it in postgame press conf. but i dunno, how did they decide that in 20 minutes without an x-ray or anything (i assume)???

333333333333 (33333), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 02:17 (nineteen years ago)

maybe it's a ploy and he'll be back when they get to edmonton. please god.

McTavish should start the unicorn in Game 2.

alex in montreal (alex in montreal), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 02:30 (nineteen years ago)

Conklin or Markkanen will start the next game, still operating under the pretence that Roloson is out for the series. Roloson will start the game after that.

Try Ty Conklin more.

fields of salmon (fieldsofsalmon), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 04:42 (nineteen years ago)

beatdown

mookieproof (mookieproof), Thursday, 8 June 2006 01:44 (nineteen years ago)

blowouts aren't fun even when you're cheering for the winner

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Thursday, 8 June 2006 02:57 (nineteen years ago)

they're only fun if you're georges laraque

mookieproof (mookieproof), Thursday, 8 June 2006 12:52 (nineteen years ago)

Ted Nolan to coach Isles! Cool!

Jimmy Mod: NOIZE BOARD GRIL COMPARISON ANALYST (The Famous Jimmy Mod), Thursday, 8 June 2006 17:50 (nineteen years ago)

Not even Laracque got to make much noise, his whiff was laughable. The penalty he received for it was even more pathetic. Thanks new-NHL.

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Thursday, 8 June 2006 21:47 (nineteen years ago)

don't let me get my hopes back up too high but...reminded me a lot of detroit game 2...smart defensive play and finally not giving up a dozen easy cane rushes.

Jimmy_tango (Jimmy_tango), Sunday, 11 June 2006 01:56 (nineteen years ago)

This ain't gonna be easy. I notice how Carolina has three guys cramming up Cam Ward's net, and they can still break out because of their speed.

Kudos to Peca for being massive against Brind'Amour tonight.

alex in montreal (alex in montreal), Sunday, 11 June 2006 05:48 (nineteen years ago)

man, that wasn't really massive. i want to see peca D-STROY a nigga out there, you know? i love that man. he isn't built for laying dudes out like he does but he just KNOWS where to be to catch the dude with his head down in the neutral zone and has the guts to be there.

333333333333 (33333), Sunday, 11 June 2006 17:06 (nineteen years ago)

raffi torres, that was a dumbass penalty.

is rexall place just the northlands coliseum renamed or is it a new building?

mookieproof (mookieproof), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 03:07 (nineteen years ago)

Renamed.

fields of salmon (fieldsofsalmon), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 07:23 (nineteen years ago)

Seven games . . .

fields of salmon (fieldsofsalmon), Sunday, 18 June 2006 16:41 (nineteen years ago)

carolina's meltdown has been a big ol' drag...how long did they go without one lousy shot on goal last nite?

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Sunday, 18 June 2006 16:56 (nineteen years ago)

In the second, they had their first shot with 5 minutes left.

It's still not in the bag though because I truly believe that Carolina at their very best beats Edmonton at their very best. The thing is, the Oilers *will* show up to play their very best. I don't know about the Hurricanes.

And Erik Cole? Total panic move.

alex in montreal (alex in montreal), Sunday, 18 June 2006 18:12 (nineteen years ago)

i think carolina will be fine back in raleighwood. did rob brind'amour make the trip to edmonton? i don't even remember him playing last night...

xp well if doug weight was going to be out anyway, it's not like they scratched someone just for cole.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Sunday, 18 June 2006 18:16 (nineteen years ago)

No, but someone who had a fractured neck and who hasn't played since early March should probably not be playing close to 18 minutes and at the point on the PP in Game 6.

I just remember during the Buffalo series (or was it NJ?) that they thought he could return but concluded a few days later that he might not be the wisest thing. Sure, he might have healed considerably since then, but it does seem like he rushed to get back.

alex in montreal (alex in montreal), Sunday, 18 June 2006 19:33 (nineteen years ago)

well.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 02:11 (nineteen years ago)

What an anticlimatic ending. Still hate the 'Canes.

GILLY'S BAGG'EAR VANCE OF COUPARI (Ex Leon), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 02:25 (nineteen years ago)

anticlimactic...if you hate great hockey games! that was AWESOME.

meh

daniel striped tiger (OutDatWay), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 03:07 (nineteen years ago)

The 2nd period was FANTASTIC!

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 03:15 (nineteen years ago)

I'm gonna miss Mike Emerick's pre-pubescent voice cracks.

Fonzie Scheme (Matt Chesnut), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 03:19 (nineteen years ago)

:(

two thingss thaat bother me about this win, and their both basically the same:

1) PPL from new england still trying to claim the canes as their own hartsfords whalers. They are not yours hartsfords whalers. This is the equivalent of someone from kansas city cheering for the devils because they were once the scouts or the ppl of atlanta cheering for the flames because they were once... the flames. REMEMBER: they were taken from you in a move of greed and overall lameness authorized by gayr bettmang.

2) now we have to listen to ESPN treat the canes as the whalers, going so far as to play brass bonanza on sports center, and by extension we now have to listen to the braying of chris berman as he afffects a new england/boston accent as he yells a lot on TV.

Jimmy Mod: NOIZE BOARD GRIL COMPARISON ANALYST (The Famous Jimmy Mod), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 03:59 (nineteen years ago)

I can still cheer for the Whalercanes and pray Karmanos gets herpes on his eyes, tho. Also, Brass Bonanza is timeless. Also also, ESPN is balls. And, really, it was kinda cool seeing the damn franchise win something (even if, like you said, it ain't the Ronnie Franchise franchise no more).

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 04:30 (nineteen years ago)

OK, so the free-agent extravaganza starts tomorrow... any wishlist for your respective teams/comments about what's been going on?

The rumour that Brendan Shanahan has Montreal on his list if he doesn't re-signed with Detroit makes me giddy.

alex in montreal (alex in montreal), Friday, 30 June 2006 17:43 (nineteen years ago)

As a Detroit fan that makes me a little sad, but they've got to start replacing some of those fossils some day. As long as they keep Lidstrom for a few more years, I'll be all right with it.

daniel striped tiger (OutDatWay), Friday, 30 June 2006 19:13 (nineteen years ago)

roloson and a pick for lidstrom and howard

333333333333 (33333), Friday, 30 June 2006 19:51 (nineteen years ago)

Lidstrom signed today for 2 years.

Kovalev and Shanahan on the same line would be scary, though it'd be a moot point if Ribeiro is centering it.

Isn't Roloson a UFA, thus not tradeable?

alex in montreal (alex in montreal), Friday, 30 June 2006 21:24 (nineteen years ago)

woah yeah, they just signed him up for a year??

333333333333 (33333), Friday, 30 June 2006 21:29 (nineteen years ago)

Busy first day; any thoughts?

- Disappointed Elias and Langenbrunner re-signed with New Jersey, as they were two names rumoured to be negotiating with Montreal
- Bruins just go scary with Chara and Marc Savard, but then again, Glenn Murray isn't Kovalchuk and I'm not sure if he's *that* good.
- Gerber in Ottawa is interesting; I think it's a good move 'cause he was great all season and to be fair, he sucked in TWO games in the playoffs. He deserves another chance.
- I hope signing Kubina for 5M a season (and Hal Gill for 2M) means that Toronto is less likely to sign Jason Arnott.
- Parrish-Demitra-Gaborik could be one scary line for Minnesota

alex in montreal (alex in montreal), Sunday, 2 July 2006 13:28 (nineteen years ago)

Steve Yzerman retired. I just thought it deserved a mention. Along with Gretzky and Lemieux, he formed the holy trinity of players I adored growing up. One of the greatest captains in hockey, and probably all professional sports. He was sometimes overlooked because he is so soft spoken, and played in the shadows of giants for much of his career. He was instrumental in Detroit's cup wins, and not enough can be said about his role in ending Canada's 50 year gold medal drought in Salt Lake; a tournament he played on basically one leg. He's one of the all-greats. I hope that they waive the Hall of fame waiting period for him.

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 03:00 (nineteen years ago)

Waiving the HOF waiting period might be a bit much, but yes, one of the classiest players of all time.

alex in montreal (alex in montreal), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 03:29 (nineteen years ago)

it's probably time to start an 06/07 thread, no? given that all we're discussing now is preamble to next september.
