Oderquis Reve: Changuisero de Cepa. Not sure about this. Interesting but maybe "too Cuban" (like "too jazzy") for me. I'm trying really hard to like "Producto Changüi" because, thematically, it would make a great transition from another Cuban song to Colombian cumbia type thing on a mix I'm finishing up. The nasal coros in the second half are pretty great.

Rockist_Scientist (RSLaRue), Friday, 7 October 2005 10:44 (twenty years ago)

(Also, I keep wanting to correct the name: wouldn't "Orquedis" sound nicer, more Spanish even, than "Oderquis"?)

is subramanian a very common name? i've just read a privy council case by that name appealed from malaysian courts, how coincidental. it's key authority in australian evidence law that evidence of a statement made to a witness by a person who is not himself called as a witness is an exception to the hearsay rule and is admissible when it is proposed to establish by the eivdence, not the truth of the statement, but the fact that it was made.

I have tried to listen to the new Franz Ferdinand album but unfortunately keep falling asleep about halfway through.

Otherwise I am enjoying the current Ladytron and Paul Anka albums, as well as the superb new John Lydon retrospective ("Sun" from 1997 is a lost classic if ever there were one - Dufay Collective meets Leftfield to cover "Boy In The Bubble" remixed by Kate Bush). Am also feeling Prairie Wind by Neil Young very deeply indeed as it/he speaks of the kind of things which concern people of my age and above; as indeed in a different way does My Machine by Princess Superstar, especially its title track.

The Cagedbaby album I found in MVE Berwick Street for £2, and I am liking that thus far.

I am also listening to Buttercups And Rainbows: The Songs Of Macaulay and MacLeod which is full of wonderful obscure and not-so-obscure '60s metapop sides from the Lou Christie/Twyla Herbert of Britpop backroom songwriting. I will comment on this more when Tom comes to the Foundations and Long John Baldry in Popular.

Agree on the Franz Ferdinand album Marcello, I can't get into it, it is so disgustingly ROCK!

I am currently listening to:

Sebastian Tellier-Politics (kind of off the wall but I like the general 80s feel of it, "La Ritournelle" still amazing) Also listening to the remixes of La Ritournelle, which are surprisingly great, one sort of P-Funk one and another electroclash one. Seems they saved the crap 4/4 ones for the forthcoming second 12 of it.

Madonna-Hung Up (Stewart Price's Eurotrance Mix)

James Holden live at Sonar 2005 (it's quite badly mixed but has live crowd noise like screaming and cheering, so much energy, and it made me think a little wistfully yesterday "I bet this set came after 10 hours of similarly hard sets, cos everyone sounds so completely fucked and it has that certain feeling to it, I wonder will I ever actually go to a festival and spend all day on drugs watching DJs again! Do I even want to?!?!?!")

OK, so last night dug out some CDs haven't listened to in a while because I didn't like them much the first and, in some cases, only time I listened to 'em:

Pharoah Sanders - Summun, Bukmun, Umyun
OK stuff, bit bland, not one of his best - no freakouts! No yodelling!

Karlheinz Stockhausen - Zyklus / Klavierstucke V / Klavierstucke IX / Kontakte
Versions by some Swedish fellows, not totally top-notch versions but found I liked the piano pieces (which I don't do always with Stockhausen)

Alain Goraguer - Le Planete Sauvage
Soundtrack to weird animated movie, boring as fuck to be honest, I should sell this or get rid of it

Whitehouse - Twice Is Not Enough / Never Forget Death
Two albums, from 1991 and 1992. First has some good things on it, second is rubbish. I don't mind the music so much i just wish he wouldn't sing with his horrible squeaky Home Counties voice

Anthony Braxton/Richard Teitelbaum - Open Aspects
Parts of this grabbed me other parts were sheerest noodle.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 14 October 2005 09:24 (twenty years ago)

x-post : A fun night in with Dadaismus!

This morning :

The Sex Pistols - various tracks from 'Bollocks' and pre-Bollocks sessions.

12" 80's Volume 2. Can't decide if this is a bit of a letdown after Vol 1. The Pigbag extended mix of 'Papa..' is a travesty with those syndrums and who needs INXS or Swansway? Still...there's Axel F! And the glory of Altered Images 'Don't Talk To Me About Love' and Haircut 100's 'Favourite Shirts'

I was hoping the postman would bring my Soft Machine 2CD anthology this morning, but he didn't, so next up is a home-made pub-rock compilation with the likes of Ducks DeLuxe, The Jook, Graham Parker etc. Bring on the beer!

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 14 October 2005 09:25 (twenty years ago)

Also 12" '80s Vol 2 does have the full "Night Train" by Visage with Rusty Egan giving a career best performance on drums in the final 50 seconds or so.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 14 October 2005 09:50 (twenty years ago)

Yes - I must re-listen to that. Best thing on either volume is Monsoon's 'Ever So Lonely'. Best 12" single ever? (Yes I know I said that about Everything's Gone Green).

Mihaly Dresch is a great Hungarian sax/flute player whose music combines Eastern European folk traditions with free and modal jazz. This album also features excellent violin and a snappy rhythm section.

Iron & Wine w/ Calexico - In the Reins

Just listened to this for the first time this morning. I like it. Haven't heard much Iron & Wine before, but Calexico's trademarked noir-western accompaniment is perfect for this.

o. nate (onate), Friday, 14 October 2005 14:16 (twenty years ago)

how's the Wyatt show?

milton parker (Jon L), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 06:41 (twenty years ago)

It's pretty amazing. He does all of Rock Bottom in its entirety plus various other things (quite a bit of Matching Mole stuff) but the visceral and nakedly aggressive attack of the music will come as a major shock to anyone familiar with the relatively placid paths of the original record (cf. Coltrane doing "A Love Supreme" live at Antibes). Dave Stewart (the Hatfield & the North/"It's My Party" one) handles keyboard duties throughout and is immediately noticeable on the extended "Sea Song." Line-up: both Laurie Allan and Nick Mason on drums, Hugh Hopper on bass, Mike Oldfield and Fred Frith on guitars, Mongezi Feza and Gary Windo on horns, Julie Tippetts and Ivor Cutler on guest vocals. The interplay between Wyatt's voice and Feza's trumpet on "Little Red Riding Hood" is incendiary and the general mood throughout is far darker than you might have anticipated. When Cutler turns up to do the closing section of "Little Red Robin Hood" it's as he's declaiming it from the pits of hell as the stage burns in red apocalypse - genuinely frightening. Everyone piles in for the closing "I'm A Believer" which inexplicably (hurrah!) turns into a Chas and Dave knees-up and then freeform explosion. I liked Wyatt's remark that Peel's opening introduction was "one of the best solos on the record." It really needs to be heard.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 06:50 (twenty years ago)

Where we be the best place to start with Robert Wyatt? I've only really heard "Heeps Of Sheep", "I'm A Believer" and "Shipbuilding".
A Wyatt Top 5 if you like.

Never got round to Hermann Nitsch, so instead:

Os Mutantes - Everything Is Possible (it's that Serge Gainsbourg effect - it's never as good as you're led to believe)
Heldon - Interface (intense and twiddly music from intense and twiddly Frenchmen - Knotty But Knice!)
P.F. Sloan - Anthology (laughable when he's being Dylan (which is most of the time), quite nice otherwise)
Sun Ra - Cymbals + Crystal Spears (kind of woozy jazz from the bottom of one of Saturn's oceans)
Carla Bley - Tropic Appetites (falling short of "Escalator" (inevitably) but still pretty damn fine)
Sun Ra - When Angels Speak of Love (more Ra, from his spooky "let's stick everything thru an echo machine period)

Alone in a friendless, weird universe of your own devising I'd say.

Recently:

Sun Ra (again) - Black Myth/Out In Space (best moog player ever)
Lots of slightly disappointing Morricone soundtracks (I've realised I don't much like all that jazzy/loungey soundtrack stuff from the late 60s/ early 70s - see also Gainsbourg, Goraguer, Os Mutantes (to some extent))

Alone in a friendless, weird universe of your own devising I'd say

Maybe I wasn't in the right mood for Rock Bottom - I take it it's supposed to be somewhat stark and haunting. I guess I just prefer the sly, catchy jazz-pop of the later albums.

More stuff I've been listening to recently:

The Byrds - The Notorious Byrd Brothers
Jenny Scheinman - 12 Songs
New Pornographers - Twin Cinema
No Thanks: The '70s Punk Rebellion (Rhino) - Disc 4
Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane over the Sea

Well, sorry, but no one on this thread has bothered to describe why Rock Bottom is so essential - it's just been "Go buy it" - so I turned to the AllMusic.com guide for some insight into what people like about it, and I found this sentence:

After months of painful recuperation, Wyatt re-emerged with the harrowing Rock Bottom (1974)...

It was the word "harrowing" that threw me. If it's not supposed to be harrowing, then what is it?

o. nate (onate), Friday, 21 October 2005 15:47 (twenty years ago)

It's many many things but I'm too tired to do justice to them right now and, anyway, someone like Marcello's the man for that job. Whoever wrote that All Music thing should be taken out and shot. Why is it harrowing? Because he fell out of a (Gary) windo(w) and broke his back before he made the album? He'd written most (if not all) of the album before that anyway. And, no the title doesn't describe Robert Wyatt's mood of suicidal despair it's actually a comment on the fact that having to sit in wheelchair all day requires your bottom to be somewhat rock hard - well that's partly the reason, because like everything else about this album it works on several planes at once.

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 21 October 2005 17:19 (twenty years ago)

Dr. C: the recent John Howard album, 'The Desperate Hours' is most certainly worth hearing; do an ILM search and you'll find my thoughts on it. All of the others are worth having, though the Biddu-produced one is the least essential (interesting Trevor Horn produced bonus tracks from '78, mind).

Last time I wrote this (on ILM) I said I had a huge backlog of listening to get through - and Marcello called me a hippy - but I couldn't get the new Boards of Canada off my CD player. It's finally been shifted, and the backlog has got bigger in that somebody has given me the Nuggets II boxed set which is rather good, but I've got something else stuck in the CD player which cannot be shifted. Sigh. But then, "The fast rise and fall of the South" by the Kingsbury Manx needs a few listens to get into it, and it's worth it.

'Twan (miccio), Friday, 4 November 2005 23:23 (twenty years ago)

Been listening to compilations today - Futurism #2, Punky Reggae Party and Grindcrusher. Made my afternoon in the new office go quite nicely!

I bought a few CDs in a sale at MVC the other day so I've listened to them tonight - David Bowie - Low, MC5 - Kick Out The Jams (I was actually surprised that I didn't already own this), Black Sabbath - Paranoid, Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Fever To Tell. They were all about 3 quid each. Bargain.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Saturday, 5 November 2005 22:12 (twenty years ago)

roxy music - for your pleasure (looking for my 1973 fave, this will only be no.2 i guess though the title song at the end with the drunken reverberating keyboard is utterly phantastic)

most of the john peel singles box (i am a little stunned about all these old songs which mostly don't do anything for me, where is the more adventurous stuff he used to play on the radio?)

arizona amp and alternator (howe gelb's new band without members, he is great as always. mood wise quite close to chore of enchantment, very relaxed)

the first three songs of kate bush's aerial, sounds pretty good. i have never been a huge fan of hers but her voice defined a part of my eighties.

kaija saariaho "graal theatre" violin concerto, the starting point for a thread on her over at ilm.

gavin bryars "the sinking of the titanic", charles ives "universe symphony" (cond. johnnny reinhard), the latter is, just like varese, quite unlike anything for its time.

robert ashley "private parts": spoken word with tabla/organ accompainment. His voice is kinda special and its hard to think of anyone else even trying to take this on.

Beach Boys - Surf's Up
The Throwback at Noon on Hot 97

Hurting (Hurting), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 16:46 (twenty years ago)

went to a "classical" gig last night - and this ws the programme:

Philip Clark - New work
Hans Eisler - Selected songs Ian Pace - "...quasi una fantasmagoria Op.120 No.2..." (World premiere)
Dave Smith - The Palestinian Stone Child
Michael Finnissy - Not Afraid; New work (World premiere)
Richard Barrett - Interference
Frederic Rzewski - Come Together

(Ian Pace - piano/voice, Carl Rossmann - clarinet/voice, Karen Westbrook - voice were the main participants; but also some guitar, toy piano as played by others; the second Finnissy piece had pre-taped voices to go along with the singing/spoken word to create the tapestry)

Every piece had singing/spoken word arrangement as well as instrumental music which could be highly abstract but was turned into something v moving, as it provided the backing to words that tackled some of the following: love, music, poverty, war, and all of this a day after Tony Blair lost on the '90 days' issue. blimey!!

Anthony Braxton - Willisau (Studio) and Five Compositions (Quartet) 1986 (AWESOME)
Nuh Uh (10min long indie "prog" songs that actually go somewhere)

MP3s thanks to ilmers and ysi:

What's awesome though -- I meant to say -- is that it's the composer himself playing the piano. Plus I'm a total sucker for fuzzy old classical recordings where the piano sounds a little muffled.

This past week it has been:
"Tapestry" - Carole King, my eternal search for 1972 (or my parents record collection thereof) continues. I'm still holding off buying "Teaser and the firecat" though for some reason. Fear, probably, of owning a Cat Stevens record.
"Listen, listen" - The Merry Go Round, RevOla doing a good job here.
"The fabulous expedition of" - Dillard and Clark, thanks to those who answered my query about electric harpsichords on ILM.
"Koyannisaqatsi" - Philip Glass, to prepare myself for the live thingie at the Millenium Centre on Wednesday. Can't bloody wait.
"The fast rise and fall of the South" - The Kingsbury Manx, still can't stop playing it even now.

Rob M (Rob M), Monday, 28 November 2005 14:30 (twenty years ago)

rob: what's the live koyaanisqatsi thing? tell me more pls

nervous (cochere), Monday, 28 November 2005 14:33 (twenty years ago)

All three films of the Qatsi trilogy are being shown on consecutive nights at the Cardiff Millenium Centre with the Philip Glass Ensemble providing the music live. After about a month of persuasion my wife has finally allowed me to go to one, so I'm going to the first. They run from this Wednesday to Friday in order. I think they are the only dates in the UK for this trilogy.

Trompe le Monde

The Cure: early B-sides

the bellefox, Monday, 28 November 2005 15:52 (twenty years ago)

The Merry Go Round made one album on A&M in '67 which is the missing link between "Rubber soul" and "#1 Record", only not quite THAT good. But it's good anyway. They then split up and leader Emitt Rhodes made a solo album on A&M which is also included on the CD, which is comparible to early Nilsson and late period Beatles, very melodic, very nice. There's some singles too, and two versions of "Time will show the wiser" which are both brilliant. You might like it, Dr. C. It's only £8 or thereabouts.
