Jonothong Williamsmang (ex machina), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 17:24 (twenty years ago)

It's official. But of all the goodies APPL announced today, the one that's got me most interested is the addition of ABC and Disney content to iTMS. The conventional wisdom as of a couple of days ago was that working out television rights was "too complicated" and was still "a long way off."

Looks like Iger's reported interest in moving forward with new distribution technologies is sincere. Not that most of these things aren't available by torrent already, but that's not something most of our moms play with. ESPN archives seem inevitable etc etc...

I love the future.

rogermexico (rogermexico), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 17:25 (twenty years ago)

I'll pay a few bucks to get new eps of shows I like without having to look around for Torrents (and BT is sort of useless if you're looking for something a little older, with fewer people sharing). What's HBO OnDemand cost per ep?

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 17:30 (twenty years ago)

Wait, nevermind. Just saw that they're going to be iPod-sized. I'll keep pirating.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 17:32 (twenty years ago)

Totally!

Lion-O (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 17:32 (twenty years ago)

Gah, iPod sized video. 1994!!!

If you hook a full sized movie to the iPod and output TV out, will it be at full res?

Jonothong Williamsmang (ex machina), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 17:34 (twenty years ago)

Somehow I doubt it.

Lion-O (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 17:34 (twenty years ago)

I want a 27" ipod.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 17:34 (twenty years ago)

I care not. Truly.

andy --, Wednesday, 12 October 2005 17:34 (twenty years ago)

Jobs said the download resolution is 320x240. Fuck that.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 17:36 (twenty years ago)

i'll stick with my current combo of laptop + bittorrent.

glasgow coma score (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 17:38 (twenty years ago)

I'm afraid to take my laptop outside after filling my last one with beer!

Althought that happened at home...

Lion-O (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 17:38 (twenty years ago)

I'm not finding any videos for sale - is there another iTunes update I need to get?

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 17:45 (twenty years ago)

this is from apple.com: it suggests that the model for video will be identical to iTunes. so, umm, you can watch video downloads on your desktop/laptop if you want.

if not, there's video out.

Sync, Look and Listen

Playing your iPod is only half the fun. Try filling it with downloads from the iTunes Music Store. Choose from over 2 million songs, 20,000 podcasts, 2,000 music videos or your favorite ABC and Disney television shows, download them to your Mac or PC and sync them to your iPod. Add an optional audio cable to play music from the iPod to your home stereo or use an optional S-video cable with iPod to play VJ on your TV. You can perform the same big-screen feat with iPod photo slideshows. Oh, and you can do it all from across the room using the optional Universal Dock and handy new Apple remote.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 17:48 (twenty years ago)

Jobs said the download resolution is 320x240

Aw man... *kicks pebble*

That's what I get for getting all worked up. B-b-ut it has VIDEO OUT. Phooey.

Guess it keeps the files nice'n'light to fit in yr ipod...

rogermexico (rogermexico), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 17:49 (twenty years ago)

itunes 6:

http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 17:49 (twenty years ago)

i think i'm going to hang fire and see how many people go: "HEY, ITUNES 6 BROKE MY MAC" first, mind you.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 17:50 (twenty years ago)

OK, this is a dealbreaker...

Support: H.264 video: up to 768 Kbps, 320 x 240, 30 frames per sec., Baseline Profile up to Level 1.3 with AAC-LC up to 160 Kbps, 48 Khz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4 and .mov file formats MPEG-4 video: up to 2.5 mbps, 480 x 480, 30 frames per sec., Simple Profile with AAC-LC up to 160 Kbps, 48 Khz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4 and .mov file formats

If I can't watch my recently torrented avis on the train then I'm not interested.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 17:53 (twenty years ago)

It also appears that these are USB-only and not FireWire.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 17:54 (twenty years ago)

MPEG-4 video: up to 2.5 mbps, 480 x 480, 30 frames per sec.

Could this be a typo? Not supporting 640 X 480 would be a pretty dumb oversight.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 17:55 (twenty years ago)

USB-only?? no full-res video?? BOO

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 17:56 (twenty years ago)

i was kind of excited--some of you may know i & my partners put on shows where we screen our movies at various venues & this woulda been a pretty perfect way to carry them around, what with the video out! but w/o hi-res i say boo

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 17:57 (twenty years ago)

nice one, apple: the UK site still links to iTunes 5, despite exciting rumours of a BBC-linked iTunes 6. i wait with baited breath.

chris: surely it's not the end of the world to convert .avi to an iPod-friendly format?

but yes, the lack of any full-res option is poor.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 17:58 (twenty years ago)

I'm tempted to sell my dual G5 and monitor and buy an iMac, if I thought I'd come out far enough ahead on the deal.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 17:58 (twenty years ago)

whoops, wrong Apple thread.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 17:59 (twenty years ago)

and USB-only ... yeh, that was always going to happen. shit, but expected.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 17:59 (twenty years ago)

chris: surely it's not the end of the world to convert .avi to an iPod-friendly format?

It's doable, but it's a hassle. I'm also an extreme case because I got rid of my television and only watch torrented shows on my laptop.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 18:02 (twenty years ago)

coo! whatever the absolute opposite of a luddite is: you're it.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 18:06 (twenty years ago)

perhaps I'm a 'tard, but even with iTunes 6 I can't find any (for-sale) music videos. Lost comes up off the main page, but when I click on the Thom Yorke '2000 Videos' image, it just takes me to browsing music, and when I search for Madonna, no videos come up. Have they not indexed the videos yet or something?

320*240 isn't even worth watching on my computer, that's postage-stamp sized (1680x1050 res).

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 18:14 (twenty years ago)

They're damn wide, these new ipods. Pocket killers, by the look.

And, yep, that res is pathetic.

I think the main problem for pockets is width. I like flatter even if it's a bit bigger (for the screen). Still, I won't be getting any of these things until they are also a phone and a decent camera in a Nano size.

I'm pretty happy with my zen micro right now. The nano is appealing, but I'm afraid of new devices when they first come out. I've also gotten used to having just 5 gigs of music at a time. It's very appealing to have half of my music collection with me at all times, but I only seem to listen to new stuff I download on my portable. Having said that, when they come out with an ipod that holds 500 gigs and is the size of a postage stamp, i'm there.

Also dean, the first exchange between us was this lovely statement:

..which I assume he's either stating plainly in which case it's just an insult, or vaguely referencing an actually funny thing that Jess said on another thread.

I suppose I should ignore it, but it seemed like a personal attack which I asked about, especially in light of his calling me "dumb" for some reason on another thread.

I'd send it back for the new one - resale issues if nothing else. You don't lose out on anything by switching.

Are You Nomar? (miloaukerman), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 22:09 (twenty years ago)

My only concern is that given Apple's track record, there could be problems related to video that I would be exposed to, even though I wouldn't use the video function that often. I had a second gen ipod for so long without any problems...

I was CRYING when Magin Johnson did donuts in a magical AIDS thrfit store (dr g), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 22:15 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, but any problems would be firm/software related and fixed with an update. The only thing I'm wary about with Apple are generational hardware problems and the hardware for the video ipod is basically the same as the photo, I think.

Are You Nomar? (miloaukerman), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 22:18 (twenty years ago)

IMPORTANT: I just bought a 60gb photo ipod. It was delivered to my desk an hour ago. Haven't opened it. Should I return it and get a video ipod?

The video size/res is scaring me away.

The new ipod is thinner, lighter, and gets better battery life than the one on your desk. It's also a model at the beginning of its object-of-desire cycle rather than the end.

xpost! so, er, what AYN? said then.

And since the price hasn't changed, resale is definitely impacted, so the question has to be: do I want to effectively PAY 50 bucks to keep the old one.

I'm pretty sure the answer is no. There shouldn't be any major issues associated with video, and you've got a 1-year warranty.

Is the fact they use USB - which is also the case for the iPOD Nano - because it's easier for PC users? I heard this, but I don't know if that makes any sense. I can only say that it sucks a bit. USB is slower. I love our Nano more though. Don't really need an iPOD vid just yet. I mean, if I did, we'd have about four iPODs in the house. hah.

nathalie, a bum like you (stevie nixed), Thursday, 13 October 2005 06:36 (twenty years ago)

The new iPods even though they shipped with only a USB cable could do firewire. I don't see this changing.

Jonothong Williamsmang (ex machina), Thursday, 13 October 2005 06:38 (twenty years ago)

Ah you think? Fuck, I'll have to tell my husband that then.

xpost I mean Tiger of course.

Just noticed that they have the iMAC with built in iSIGHT. The bastards! Now I'll need to buy that instead of the regular one. Good that I waited.

nathalie, a bum like you (stevie nixed), Thursday, 13 October 2005 06:40 (twenty years ago)

The new ones can only do USB, like the nanos.

But I want one of these:

USB is slower

INCORRECT.

USB 2.0 goes up to 480Mbps, while FireWire 800 only goes up to 320Mbps.

Of course home computer implementations all achieve different levels of performance, and as late as last May Apple's USB 2 speeds were pathetic compared to both their own FW 800 rate AND x86 USB 2.0.

TOMBOT, Thursday, 13 October 2005 11:06 (twenty years ago)

Not too fussed over this new iPod, to be honest. More important to me is the question of when they will bump the PowerBooks?

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Thursday, 13 October 2005 11:11 (twenty years ago)

No, more important is where's the x86 hardware? Dump this overpriced IBM shit! Cheaper chips means more margin for you, Steve! Hurry it up!

TOMBOT, Thursday, 13 October 2005 11:44 (twenty years ago)

USB is slower
INCORRECT.

Maybe. It just seemed slower importing new tracks. I dunno, maybe I'm just impatient.

Don't care about the new iPOD, I'll be getting the new iMAC for the shop. :-)))

nathalie, a bum like you (stevie nixed), Thursday, 13 October 2005 12:03 (twenty years ago)

The hardware is ready--as far as I'm aware it's waiting on the x86 version of OSX to be completed...

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Thursday, 13 October 2005 12:16 (twenty years ago)

UHHHH, THERE'S BEEN AN OSX X86 PREVIEW FOR MONTHS

Jonothong Williamsmang (ex machina), Thursday, 13 October 2005 12:56 (twenty years ago)

USB 2.0 = higher peak rate
Firewire 800 = higher average rate

rogermexico (rogermexico), Thursday, 13 October 2005 14:20 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, a PREVIEW... they're still finalising for release is what I mean (I am speculating, though). xpost

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Thursday, 13 October 2005 14:22 (twenty years ago)

I like Spencer a lot and I'm pretty sure I'll have a man bag one day.

Lion-O (nordicskilla), Thursday, 13 October 2005 14:22 (twenty years ago)

I *have* a man bag which I used a lot when I BARTed to work!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 13 October 2005 16:29 (twenty years ago)

We're almost the same guy!

Lion-O (nordicskilla), Thursday, 13 October 2005 16:29 (twenty years ago)

There's just the small matter of style and general dudeliness that separates us.

But I at least have age on my side.

Lion-O (nordicskilla), Thursday, 13 October 2005 16:30 (twenty years ago)

You are also able to post on the noize board:

"You have been locked out of posting to this board by an administrator"

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 13 October 2005 16:53 (twenty years ago)

Errrr....try now!

Lion-O (nordicskilla), Thursday, 13 October 2005 17:11 (twenty years ago)

Works! (but I'm assuming only temporarily - somebody there doesn't like me!)

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 13 October 2005 19:24 (twenty years ago)

They hate you because you're beautiful

TOMBOT, Thursday, 13 October 2005 20:19 (twenty years ago)

Then loving me should be easy!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 13 October 2005 20:21 (twenty years ago)

I just got a 20GB Zen Touch for my b-day. I'll wait until it's 500GBs and the media device can do everything before I get another one. Enough of this "inch-by-inch" tease every few months.

Cunga (Cunga), Friday, 14 October 2005 07:36 (twenty years ago)

I ordered one, then cancelled it a half-hour later. My buyer's guilt controls me just a little bit more than Apple.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Friday, 14 October 2005 08:49 (twenty years ago)

I've a got a 3rd gen 40Gb iPod (with a dying battery), and I'd be tempted to go for one of these if they upped the size of the basic model to 40Gb like was rumoured before the announcement.

Greig (treefell), Friday, 14 October 2005 08:54 (twenty years ago)

I wanna see if Apple replaces the bat on my 3rd gen iPod like they are apparently supposed to do as per class action lawsuit settlement. If they do, then I'll eBay it after it comes back (advertising "just replaced battery," et al).

Eric H. (Eric H.), Friday, 14 October 2005 11:02 (twenty years ago)

Blocked again! Sorry to use this thread, but I don't know where else to turn. I don't know why Adam and Steve and Ronan and Jess etc can post there but *I* am banned? WTF?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 14 October 2005 17:19 (twenty years ago)

Those four are far more dangerous to NOIZE than I could ever be!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 14 October 2005 17:19 (twenty years ago)

THIS IS THE THREAD WHERE WE DISCUSS WHY WE ARE BANNED FROM THE NOISE BOARD (Not really safe for work, obviously)

Jonothong Williamsmang (ex machina), Friday, 14 October 2005 17:24 (twenty years ago)

Jon loves me. I don't know why. I can troll and say anything I like on the noise board and he worships me like a little british god.

Lion-O (nordicskilla), Friday, 14 October 2005 17:26 (twenty years ago)

"Between the music and the TV shows, people on trains listening to/watching iPods will be easier to rob than ever!"
