KOALA TACOS INDEED.

I have got to stop overdoing the sauce on schoolnights.

I initially read that as 'schoolgirls,' and wished to be invited to your parties of reprenhensibility and loose young women.

haitch to the izz-o (haitch), Thursday, 20 October 2005 06:12 (twenty years ago)

Hang on, is Bolt talking about Galas or someone else in that stupid rant?

And god, its a bit OLD to STILL go on about "waste of taxpayers money" when it comes to the arts. He is such a wanker, I cant even be bothered getting angry about it. He cant be for real at this point, no one is that thick.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 20 October 2005 06:22 (twenty years ago)

I obviously cannot comment.

Haha :D

I dont even have to try anymore!

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 21 October 2005 02:32 (twenty years ago)

Eh, it got boring anyway. I cant be bothered today.

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 21 October 2005 02:35 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I thought of posting a smartarse comment on that thread but stuff it. Life is short.

moley (moley), Friday, 21 October 2005 02:36 (twenty years ago)

Indeed it is! So of course, I spend it all DRINKING! ;D

Weird thing (Jim will point and laff at me for this): last night we were watching my new S6 simpsons box, and the treehouse of horror 5 came on. The one with the Shinning, and all that. And I realised to my amazement I HAVE NEVER SEEN THAT ONE. Even though I knew all the quotes ("go crazy? Dont mind if I do!" and so on). I think its probably one of the best eps of the lot.

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 21 October 2005 02:39 (twenty years ago)

The Salivation Army again this Saturday at the Birmingham, with Honest Engine and The Adults.

Jim, were you and Bek serious about taking up my offer of a spot on the prestigious TSA doorlist?

Sasha (sgh), Friday, 21 October 2005 02:54 (twenty years ago)

I really liked yr ep, Sash! :)

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 21 October 2005 02:56 (twenty years ago)

I bought the shining last night for $10.

haitch to the izz-o (haitch), Friday, 21 October 2005 03:12 (twenty years ago)

the movie? i saw it on telly not that long ago, i reckon it is still the scariest film i've ever seen. those twin girls appearing in the hallway make cameo appearances in my nightmares.

gem (trisk), Friday, 21 October 2005 03:19 (twenty years ago)

Nick said there's 2 versions of the movie, and apaz Kubrics one is nothing like the book at the end. No one dies freezing in the snow in the book. They blow the hotel up in the book!

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 21 October 2005 03:26 (twenty years ago)

(the other movie was some crappy Tv-movie thing?)

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 21 October 2005 03:26 (twenty years ago)

maybe. but the one i saw recently was the kubrick one on sbs. i was a tad surprised to see it on telly, even sbs.

gem (trisk), Friday, 21 October 2005 03:27 (twenty years ago)

I've never seen it :( Nick said he didnt like it! Which suprised me, I thought it was sposed to be ace creepy.

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 21 October 2005 03:30 (twenty years ago)

He is feeb. Mock him.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 21 October 2005 03:32 (twenty years ago)

well i find it to be ace creepy. the whole atmosphere of it, with them snowed into this remote hotel. admittedly i can be a bit of a whimp with the scary movies though, so maybe people who enjoy creepy movies more than me wouldn't be as scared. but i think it's well worth watching, jack nicholson is unreal in it.

gem (trisk), Friday, 21 October 2005 03:32 (twenty years ago)

HEEEEEERES JOHNNY!

(I love how homer then goes "ah! wrong room... *smash* DAAAAVID LETTERMAN!")

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 21 October 2005 03:34 (twenty years ago)

ahahaa that just cracked me up. that was hilarious yes.

gem (trisk), Friday, 21 October 2005 03:35 (twenty years ago)

It seemed more creepy than scarey. That bathroom scene ... eeyich. And the little boy on the tricycle shot from a child's point of view is just really unsettling. And RED RUM. Classic.

saleXander / sophie (salexander), Friday, 21 October 2005 03:36 (twenty years ago)

the blood coming down the stairway!!

it's a magnificent looking film. I am a sucker for those long tracking shots down the hotel hallways, I must admit.

haitch to the izz-o (haitch), Friday, 21 October 2005 03:48 (twenty years ago)

I've not seen it. Sounds like I'm missing out.

Bombed Out and Depleted / Kate (papa november), Friday, 21 October 2005 03:50 (twenty years ago)

the hallway shots are unreal. and the enormously empty ballrooms, stuff like that. it's a great movie.

gem (trisk), Friday, 21 October 2005 03:52 (twenty years ago)

"thats weird... the blood normally gets off on the second floor!"

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 21 October 2005 03:57 (twenty years ago)

Scary...but not that scary. More unsettling than anything else.

Book much, much, MUCH better.

Mike Stuchbery (Mike Stuchbery), Friday, 21 October 2005 06:29 (twenty years ago)

we have a famly of ducks (mother and 9 ducklings) visiting our yard daily. i think she brings them to teach them to swim in the pond. two jumped in the sandpit and she was gonna peck my head if i tried to rescue them by hand. so i provided some steps.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Friday, 21 October 2005 06:51 (twenty years ago)

also book > film is almost a truism.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Friday, 21 October 2005 06:56 (twenty years ago)

although with a kubrick film of a king novel it was kinda worrying

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Friday, 21 October 2005 06:59 (twenty years ago)

actually that's one where i preferred the film to the book. although i did see the film first, i always think that might create a bit of a bias.

gem (trisk), Friday, 21 October 2005 06:59 (twenty years ago)

I once said something about Kubrick on a mongrel thread. He's interesting to me because he's the only case of a film maker who makes films of books I've invariably read. I wrote:

"He is brilliant at setting up a scene and mood inspired by the author, especially when the author has gone to town and really described the scene in great detail. Kubrick is very faithful here, and does a good job of nailing every detail so it looks just right, just as the author intended. However, he has a poor sense of the author's plot. He likes the striking visual scenes so much he neglects narrative continuity. When something in a Kubrick film doesn't make sense, or happens too quickly in terms of normal buildup in tension, and human motivation, or ends abruptly at an odd moment, you will usually find, if you read the book on which the film is based, that he has missed or glossed over several chapters. He invariably does this, I think, because when reading the book he goes from one supercharged, vivid scene to the next as quickly as possible, jumping over the narrative in between because he's not interested in the in between bits."

moley, Friday, 21 October 2005 07:20 (twenty years ago)

Does that make him a good film-maker, bad story-teller?

saleXander / sophie (salexander), Friday, 21 October 2005 07:22 (twenty years ago)

i wish i could express myself as well as you moley. i agree. it is the visual aspects of his films that i like the most about them.

gem (trisk), Friday, 21 October 2005 07:25 (twenty years ago)

Here's a terrific article on the Freudian symbolism of 'Eyes Wide Shut' which traces it back to Schnitzler's (1912?) Freud-influenced novel, 'Traumnovelle'. Please mongrels, you must read this wonderful article, it is a perfect example of how to do psychoanalytic writing.

I bought Moulin Rouge the other day because it was only $15 and I thought it was probably high time I saw it. What a fucking train wreck. Awful, awful, awful.

Bombed Out and Depleted / Kate (papa november), Friday, 21 October 2005 09:02 (twenty years ago)

I knew I would not like it even though I still have not seen it. You know how? I met the director and thought 'This guy is not capable of making anything I, personally, would enjoy.' Not a judgement or anything, it was just a non-judgemental, accurate, thought.

moley, Friday, 21 October 2005 09:17 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I went into it feeling the same, I knew there was a big chance I wouldn't like it, but thought, maybe costume or set-wise there may be something salvagable, but nah, we turned it off 10 mins in. Might try to sell it on ebay.

........

I think I might enter the Australian Biggest Loser thing on channel 10. Argh what am I saying?!

Bombed Out and Depleted / Kate (papa november), Friday, 21 October 2005 09:27 (twenty years ago)

Shut up, it's great.

I just don't understand how going in that would make anybody feel better about themself. Hell, the only thing that made me feel kickass again was getting to the stage where I could motivate myself to go hard at the gym without someone yelling at me.

Mike Stuchbery (Mike Stuchbery), Friday, 21 October 2005 10:06 (twenty years ago)

I wish that show had been on 3 years ago.

Precisely.

saleXander / sophie (salexander), Friday, 21 October 2005 10:21 (twenty years ago)

Hi Moley!

Panther Pink (Pinkpanther), Friday, 21 October 2005 10:25 (twenty years ago)

Well I was kind of joking Mikey. I'm far too insecure to have all my exes laugh at me trying to regain my former glory.

Bombed Out and Depleted / Kate (papa november), Friday, 21 October 2005 10:31 (twenty years ago)

I have no conclusive proof of this. Um, here's a compare and contrast: December 2001 vs October 2005. Compare the shape of the face.

edward o (edwardo), Friday, 21 October 2005 10:52 (twenty years ago)

Er, try losing the BR on the end of that. I didn't type it! ILX seemed to insert it.

Well I am now full of this dessert. Perhaps I should mention that the banas were baked with cinnamon sticks, triple sec, brown sugar and water. Too sweet for your taste kate? Twas indeed very sweet.

moley, Sunday, 23 October 2005 11:15 (twenty years ago)

I think missy higgins' sleeves are... a mistake.

haitch to the izz-o (haitch), Sunday, 23 October 2005 11:35 (twenty years ago)

Nah, I just hate Bananas.

Yeah, I initially bagged Higgins' dress, then changed my mind then decided the sleeves were a little too Snow White for me.

Bombed Out and Depleted / Kate (papa november), Sunday, 23 October 2005 12:20 (twenty years ago)

Hahaha, my 5 yr old daughter started bagging out her dress as soon as she saw it. I was inclined to think it was mainly her posture that was at fault. Straight back, Missy!

moley, Sunday, 23 October 2005 19:56 (twenty years ago)

Ha!

Good morning Moley :)

Bombed Out and Depleted / Kate (papa november), Sunday, 23 October 2005 20:14 (twenty years ago)

morning kate. Today is the first day of the rest of your life. And don't forget - life is nasty, brutish and short. Make an affirmation to exploit or undermine a complete stranger every day.

moley, Sunday, 23 October 2005 20:19 (twenty years ago)

Complete stranger?! Why didn't you say so!? I've been just working on the people I already know!

Bombed Out and Depleted / Kate (papa november), Sunday, 23 October 2005 20:22 (twenty years ago)

Hahahaha

Who won the Euro?

moley, Sunday, 23 October 2005 20:25 (twenty years ago)

No idea, I usually hang out for it, but I don't think they publicised it enough cause I didn't even know it was on until last night.

Bombed Out and Depleted / Kate (papa november), Sunday, 23 October 2005 20:28 (twenty years ago)

abba won of course!

haitch to the izz-o (haitch), Sunday, 23 October 2005 22:22 (twenty years ago)

i guess i was the only one watching casanova then. it had a cool dancing scene that reminded me of kate's photos too.

Oooo and I missed it too. Damn.

Bombed Out and Depleted / Kate (papa november), Monday, 24 October 2005 00:05 (twenty years ago)

i may be off the mark but i think you would have enjoyed the costumes and sets kate. lots of bright colours. it was funny too! i don't feel sad that i chose it over the arias and owen wilson.

gem (trisk), Monday, 24 October 2005 00:08 (twenty years ago)

The Arias were shit. I guarantee you.

Bombed Out and Depleted / Kate (papa november), Monday, 24 October 2005 00:28 (twenty years ago)

who is this creepy little girl of whom you speak? was it an aria mascot of some sort? nikki webster II?

Some poor little kid they had handing out the awards, done up American Beauty Pageant Style.

I dunno, I was only half-watching it.

Bombed Out and Depleted / Kate (papa november), Monday, 24 October 2005 00:39 (twenty years ago)

it was very odd, and quite gruesome, to see a tiny oblivious little girl made up to look like a famous murder victim.

estela (estela), Monday, 24 October 2005 00:40 (twenty years ago)

as you can see i was an indignant aria viewer.

estela (estela), Monday, 24 October 2005 00:55 (twenty years ago)

hoff's suit was very stripey. I'm thinking it's one of those velcro numbers that you see people use to stick to walls after bouncing off a trampoline.

haitch? (haitch), Monday, 24 October 2005 01:00 (twenty years ago)

I saw Cassanova! Well, the last half hour of it anyway. At first I was all "wtf is this? Is this a comedy or a drama?" and the weird pink lighting in that ballroom scene was unnerving to my eyes.

But then it got funny, with the scene where he was confessing and rabbiting on and the priest had a heart attack (total ripoff of "Night on Earth", but still funny). I really like David Tennant. He's cute and goofy, and he was great in that one People Like Us where he was the crap actor.

I got wisdoms x-rayed last week! all four are "unerupted" (what a calming phrase) but one is pointing at a 45-degree angle towards the centre of my mouth. the dentist said that I could either see a specialist about getting them sorted, or stick my head in a bucket of sand. we agreed that all things considered, the sand option seemed to be doing me alright up 'til now.

Jim if you need floors to sleep on or people to flog stuff up the back etc in Sydney, shout out when the time comes. good luck with the bass-flake in the interim obvs.

kit brash (kit brash), Thursday, 27 October 2005 23:59 (twenty years ago)

cheers kit!

yeep wisdom tooth problems are scary things..

vacuum cleaner (electricsound), Friday, 28 October 2005 00:00 (twenty years ago)

I'm always amazed how many peoples wisdom's end up growing at wack angles and causing all kinds of trouble. Is it because there's no room in most mouths for them to come out?

Maybe thats why mine came up ok - I'd had orthodontics some years earlier, and they pull half yr molars out for that anyway. Makes more room for teeth to move and straighten up.

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 28 October 2005 00:10 (twenty years ago)

I think I'm missing about 7 adult teeth.

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 28 October 2005 00:10 (twenty years ago)

i had all of mine out when i was 19 because they had partly 'erupted' and they were growing at bizarre and painful 45 degree angles. meaning variously they were squashing my other teeth, and also that they were getting stuff under them which i couldn't get out and it went all rotten. eewwwww. no wonder i have a teeth cleaning obsession now.

gem (trisk), Friday, 28 October 2005 00:13 (twenty years ago)

no labelled floss for gem

vacuum cleaner (electricsound), Friday, 28 October 2005 00:19 (twenty years ago)

Hahaha :D

You know, I never floss. I wasnt gonna say so on that other thread, though. I have this trick I learnt from braces days: you just spend a lot of time forcefully swishing water between all yr teeth gaps, every time you drink water, brush yr teeth etc.

It must work fine, I went years not seeing a dentist and went back to be told I had not a single cavity.

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 28 October 2005 00:21 (twenty years ago)

Mind you it means I look like a dork making chipmunk faces when I drink water, but hey whatever, I'm a figure of fun so its all good =)

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 28 October 2005 00:22 (twenty years ago)

Uhhhh.....same here in Brisbane James...although that could be weird...but you know, Bec or Jeremy if they wanna, whatever.

Bombed Out and Depleted / Kate (papa november), Friday, 28 October 2005 00:23 (twenty years ago)

i floss, brush multiple times daily and listerine, and carry toothpaste and toothbrush with my everywhere. i'm frighteningly obsessed, i know this. however i wouldn't be drawing smiley faces on the floss for any future partner should he not share my obsession.

gem (trisk), Friday, 28 October 2005 00:29 (twenty years ago)

You can actually cause worse gum problems overdoing it gem! Listerine kills everything off, which can leave yr mouth vulnerable to infections cos the good bacteria is deadded too!

Also, brushing one's teeth too hard/often can wear off the enamel and damage yr gums. I had a friend once who was OCD with tooth brushing (carried a brush with him, brushed like 5 or 6 times a day or something) and his teeth became a mess from it apaz.

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 28 October 2005 00:31 (twenty years ago)

That said, I know I'm too slack t'other way.

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 28 October 2005 00:31 (twenty years ago)

yep i know that you're right trayce, the dentist has told me off for it, my enamel is already wearing down. i can't help myself though, i'm paranoid about that furry feeling you get on your teeth. ridiculous really. it started after i gave up smoking, i think it might be related somehow.

gem (trisk), Friday, 28 October 2005 00:33 (twenty years ago)

Could be yeah :(

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 28 October 2005 00:35 (twenty years ago)

vacuum cleaner (electricsound), Friday, 28 October 2005 01:10 (twenty years ago)

hi mongs! gem, be careful for fuck sakes! my friend wore a big v-shaped gap between her front teeth from overbrushing. it looked awful & she had to get them capped.

my dentist's zipper broke on his trousers while he was yanking out my wisdom teeth. he didn't have to say anything because his fly was hidden under his portly tum but he announced it loudly anyway. he was a negative attention seeker.

estela (estela), Friday, 28 October 2005 01:18 (twenty years ago)

Robbles! For a very confused moment there, I thought you meant his zipper broke cos he was using it to... er... somehow remove your tooth... which now I tink about it doesnt even make sense :-/

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 28 October 2005 01:44 (twenty years ago)

He was an unpleasant character and very stingy with the pain relief.
"I don't pull teeth out, I peel them out. Take a panadol."

estela (estela), Friday, 28 October 2005 01:53 (twenty years ago)

ARGh I hate doctors like that aaaargh. "oh dont be a wuss" etc to being in pain.

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 28 October 2005 01:58 (twenty years ago)

My current dentist is cheerful and sings country hits from the 70s, not well, but with admirable gusto.
'I beg your pardon/ I never promised you a rose garden/ along with the sunshine/ there's gotta be a little rain some time.'
There have been no distressing trouser incidents so far.

estela (estela), Friday, 28 October 2005 02:06 (twenty years ago)

i find it comforting when doctors and other health professionals sing along badly to the radio or whathaveyou. i don't know why. maybe it reassures me that they've made the correct career choice.

gem (trisk), Friday, 28 October 2005 02:07 (twenty years ago)

Yes it's nice isn't it?

He also sings, 'Oh the games people play now/ every night and every day now/ never meaning what they say now/ never saying what they mean', but, perhaps naively, I still follow his treatment suggestions anyway.

estela (estela), Friday, 28 October 2005 02:14 (twenty years ago)

My physio sat in his chair one session and said "bloody hell I'm tired", and started to play a didgereedoo. I am not making this up. I sat there a bit then said "um..aren't you gonna fix my neck? heh" and he apologised, said he was a bit out of it as he'd been up all night as his partner had given birth, or something.

Very strange man.

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 28 October 2005 02:17 (twenty years ago)

that's hilarious

estela (estela), Friday, 28 October 2005 02:27 (twenty years ago)

He was insane.

My mother is a soapie addict. Bold and the Bootiful, Neighbours, Home and Away and um... that weird dark one on ABC... whats it called? With the theme tune that goes "alwayyyys and foreverrrr".

You dont interrupt mums soaps, or dad watching the rugby finals or the Bathurst race.

DON'T DO THIS

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Friday, 28 October 2005 08:24 (twenty years ago)

Noooo the opposite. Karl realised his WIFE died, not his ex wife. And he was all OMGWTFBBQ... then they found her, yay! She was alive. So he and Alex (her new beau) went to see her, and Karl saw her, and then Alex did and was all "I love you" mooshy and Karl was outside the room staring in looking HEARTBROKEN.

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 28 October 2005 08:25 (twenty years ago)

It is funny, but misleading. A friend and I hired it thinking it'd be about a couple of guys who go out cruising and yell "Booty Call!" a lot. Instead it just makes safe sex seem really crap.

Sasha (sgh), Friday, 28 October 2005 11:03 (twenty years ago)

Coming in late on that Neighbours discussion, I have to say that when we saw the bit where the plane goes down, the same thought hit us like a Glasgow kiss: this is it, this is the episode where Neighbours finally jumps the shark.

To the soccer, of course.

Hey Trayce, that postcard thread idea is great. Former industrial kids, do you remember mail art? I read an interview with Gen P Orridge recently were he said that xeroxes killed mail art for him. I remember well - huge packages full of photocopied crap from newspapers. That ain't mail art! Now, a lovingly constructed weird gift in a weird package is mail art.

For my mum's birthday recently my daughter and I spent a day of an adventure in her honour, toasting her birthday along the way. When she got her package it had notes, verbatim conervsations and other souvenirs from the adventure, plus a disposable camera full of photos from the day for her to develop. She said it was the best present she'd ever had. That got me all nostalgic for the mail art days.

moley, Monday, 31 October 2005 23:26 (twenty years ago)

I used to have a ton of penfriends - mostly Australian. Some of them would draw amazing stuff all over each page of their letters; one girl Lindley had potato stamps that she'd stamp all over her handmade envelopes (stamp images of fish and such). Beck Th0mas from the Mavis's/etc used to send really elaborately decorated letters. I dont know where they are now, bit of a shame.

My friend Henry used to glue photocopied pics of Bauhaus or Robert Smith onto theback of his envelopes. I even had a pen name. It was great! I had about 15 regular scribes and spent a LOT of time writing letters. Its a lost art.

He added:"I'm actually fairly happy. It's been a bit of a nightmare since I bought the place so it's probably the best thing that could happen to it if it falls into a hole."

hi jim! all the spiders at your house are crying today (but fuck 'em)

estela (estela), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 22:17 (twenty years ago)

Haha my drunkenbastard ex once freaked out cos he had this weepy hole in his arm, he was convinced a white tail had bitten him, and he went on and on about how his arm was going to rot and fall off...

... til I remembered it was from the cigarette he'd dropped on his arm the day previous and burnt himself.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 23:02 (twenty years ago)

Roffs.

Haha, I remember reading about a supermarket in NZ being evacuated because a customer saw a 'deadly funnel-web spider' on the wall, but a probing investigation (I think involving the fire service) revealed that the 'spider' was a lump of blue tack.

estela (estela), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 23:15 (twenty years ago)

Isn't the thing about white tails actually doing horrible things to your flesh a bit of an exaggeration? I wasn't scared of them, I used to (not quite) play with them, and freak people out.

edward o (edwardo), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 23:19 (twenty years ago)

Right, Howard thinks a terrorist attack is imminent, other bloke says the Melbourne ASX is a target, in addition to a suburban train station. Which one? My bet is on Richmond, 'cos it'd be just my luck.

Mike Stuchbery (Mike Stuchbery), Thursday, 3 November 2005 05:46 (twenty years ago)

Well thats just freakin great, if they know about it, why dont they show us these terrist laws, extra defence money etc etc are worth it and MAKE SURE IT DONT HAPPEN YA CUNCE.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 3 November 2005 05:52 (twenty years ago)

i don't believe for one damn fucking second that 'terrorists' give a fucking rat's ass about australia.

john p. irrelevant (electricsound), Thursday, 3 November 2005 05:53 (twenty years ago)

Yeah me too actually. Nick is shitting himself this is All About the Sedition Law. Strange how now they suddenly have to rush this thru so fast hey.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 3 November 2005 05:56 (twenty years ago)

It is very convenient that Howard decides to tell the public about the supposed "terrorist" threat just when he is having a hard time with his "anti-terror" laws. He wouldn't try to be frightening people into submission by any chance would he?

salexander / sofia (salexander), Thursday, 3 November 2005 05:57 (twenty years ago)

Hell yeah he would. Before this they were always careful to play DOWN anything. All the time.

I have a strange bad feeling about the sedition laws. Something that smells of forced conscription, for example.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 3 November 2005 05:58 (twenty years ago)

From teh Aeg:

Dr Wright-Neville said that while he suspected the timing was political, this did not mean there was no threat.

"I don't believe it's a conspiracy, for really quite a simple reason that I don't think the Prime Minister could sustain a conspiracy that involved all the premiers, leaders of the intelligence and police services and leader of the (federal) Opposition.

"I'd be very surprised if — as is claimed — the Prime Minister and the Attorney-General were briefed about this on Monday.

"There's been a significant amount of chatter for some time that there's a significant counter-terrorism operation in Melbourne and Sydney. It's been going on for quite a while.

"What we're seeing here is a political decision that's an attempt to kill off debate about this by saying there's a threat, we need to deal with it."

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 3 November 2005 06:00 (twenty years ago)

IOW, this one specific thing isnt made up, but boy howdy are they using it to their advantage.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 3 November 2005 06:01 (twenty years ago)

goodie

john p. irrelevant (electricsound), Thursday, 3 November 2005 06:02 (twenty years ago)

It does smack of 19th century reactionary laws. So many Australians don't care about it because they don't realise that it not only targets those who are obviously "foreign," but it deprives every Australian of hard-won civil liberties. And they can't guarantee that some future government won't abuse the laws either.

salexander / sofia (salexander), Thursday, 3 November 2005 06:04 (twenty years ago)

Yeah whatever happened to "we fought in the war for your freedoms!"

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 3 November 2005 06:09 (twenty years ago)

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 3 November 2005 06:16 (twenty years ago)

He might use the element of suprise on the enemy.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 3 November 2005 06:16 (twenty years ago)

Now why the hell would they be bringing in conscription again before the next federal election? Not gonna happen people!

Mike Stuchbery (Mike Stuchbery), Thursday, 3 November 2005 07:26 (twenty years ago)

Why would they need conscription anyway? Are they planning on starting WWIII or something? Or to maintain control over us lowly civilians and combat those nasty terrorists? I think they're probably cunning enough to stay clear of conscription, especially as the Coalition was popular with young males at the last election.

salexander / sofia (salexander), Thursday, 3 November 2005 07:34 (twenty years ago)

they're introducing conscription provisions? that sounds a bit unlikely in anti-terrorism legislation - i think they would be legislating under different constitutional heads of power

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 3 November 2005 22:15 (twenty years ago)

I've got four bags I use pretty regularly (a big circular one, a backpack, and two library bags) and it's not in any of those. Also, it isn't plugged into my PC, or anywhere around my desk.

I am going to have to retype.. ooh.. 12,000 words if I don't find it.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 3 November 2005 22:42 (twenty years ago)

Only old revisions! I'm an idiot for not saving it onto ANY of my other computers. I should have saved it onto my home PC, my laptop or my Mac at uni, but did I? NO! So all the revisions I did on someone else's computer and only saved on thumb drive are gone. Except, I at least printed a copy, and I do at least type 100wpm so it should only be several hours of awful toil.

I saw footage for the new King Kong game for the Xbox when I was trading in some stuff the other day...hoooollyyyy shit, greatest thing I've ever seen - fighting a T-Rex with only a tommy gun, amazing graphics, etc.

Also, anyone see Wolf Creek? Everything I read makes me want to see it, but is it truly that hardcore? Will I puke?

Hell, I love it already, purely because it ain't one of them 'A Japanese Man and an Australian Woman fall in love while hiking through the Olgas and go on a metaphysical journey through love and mistrust, all while eating pudding' Australian arthouse shits.

Mike Stuchbery (Mike Stuchbery), Friday, 4 November 2005 06:46 (twenty years ago)

Oh man I wish I could work less and read this thread more. I feel I am out of the loop somewhat. Hey speaking of Chezza Zwei Tausand, I am selling out on my electro ethos: we are becoming a 4 piece with real drummer and real gtrist!! For realskys. Ed, you need not fear our audience, they are all cuet goth chicks and their gay male friends. Gothick 4 life, beeyotch!

No, gaz, it's not my first encounter as any fule kno. Oh the pain. The pain.

moley, Friday, 4 November 2005 07:15 (twenty years ago)

Cute goth chicks! They like me, don't they? Well, Trayce, you like me, and you'r.. I'll shut up now, but let me know when you're gigging and I shall go and frolic amongst the goths and the gays.

Drummers? Tch!

edward o (edwardo), Friday, 4 November 2005 07:18 (twenty years ago)

Better than that, Ed. A drummer who works at Billy Hyde as adrum technician and shows up to rehearsal with a t-shirt with a drum kit on it, and brings another drummer who sets up his kit for him AND, wait for this one, wait you sucker, ahahaha, just wait, ahahahaha, ok his favourite album of all time is the John Corabi Motley Crue album AND yes there's more, yes there is, HE SHARES THIS OPINION WITH HIS BEST FRIEND WHO IS OUR NEW GUITARIST. And you haven't even seen what they look like yet. That's even better. Rachael and I are stoked beyond our wildest dreams and expecting serious silliness on all levels.

moley, Friday, 4 November 2005 07:25 (twenty years ago)

MOTLEY CRUE! Yes, that's the RIGHT kind of guitar music, really it is. I was afeared you might have got some kind of wanky indie guitarist who doesn't like, you know, songs, or riffs, or waving your hair around a lot.

Though my hair hasn't been long enough wave around since I was 17.

edward o (edwardo), Friday, 4 November 2005 07:38 (twenty years ago)

Yes, well, Gaz will tell you I like my rock big and stupid.

moley, Friday, 4 November 2005 07:41 (twenty years ago)

I mean, not stupid, but 'it's a fine line between clever and stupid'. Which is a line that falls considerably closer to the serious pole than to the deilberately silly pol than The Darkness realise.

moley, Friday, 4 November 2005 07:42 (twenty years ago)

seriously stupid! andy the mo was but a wee step. too many folks be hedging the bets. smirking. its time.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Friday, 4 November 2005 09:08 (twenty years ago)

It is indeed time. Time to be totally badass.

Indeed, they can shove those pissant movies right up a dingo's arse as far as I'm concerned.

moley, Friday, 4 November 2005 09:43 (twenty years ago)

now now. nothing wrong with them. love them. its just...theres nothing else

its like for dinner tonight and everynight we have lentil burgers. now i like a good lentil burger. with a bit of peanut sauce. i like them MUCH more than ordinary burgers. but FOR FUCKS SAKES.

like rocknroll is a bit like fish and chips. bewdy. every now and again. nothing better. but if you eat it every night and you claim it is the best food in the universe then you are probably fat spotty and stupid.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Friday, 4 November 2005 11:02 (twenty years ago)

and 15.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Friday, 4 November 2005 11:04 (twenty years ago)

then again i haven't read the thread and have no idea what moley is referring to that mikey said. just assumed it was another one of those meme things.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Friday, 4 November 2005 11:05 (twenty years ago)

You eat lentil burgers EVERY NIGHT?

moley, Friday, 4 November 2005 21:14 (twenty years ago)

I was talking about how I think Wolf Creek is a step in the right direction for Australian film, because everything else is so incredibly torturedly arthouse.

Mike Stuchbery (Mike Stuchbery), Friday, 4 November 2005 21:52 (twenty years ago)

Recommended then?

moley, Saturday, 5 November 2005 00:10 (twenty years ago)

Where do bands play at Gertrudes? Upstairs? I woulda liked to make it, The Nurse are one of the best bands in town. But a batch of homebrew and a party at the neighbours' conspired to the fact I didn't go very far.

Sasha (sgh), Sunday, 6 November 2005 23:51 (twenty years ago)

Ach. One of my closest friends has just split up with his longterm partner, who I also love dearly, and now Im really really sad :(

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 6 November 2005 23:55 (twenty years ago)

that's never easy to deal with..

xpost yeah bands upstairs at gertrudes. the nurse played well but it was a very short set. the sound there is way better than i thought it would be.

john p. irrelevant (electricsound), Monday, 7 November 2005 00:11 (twenty years ago)

So Jim you do have another gig this Satdee? Where at? I might come if its easy-get-to-able.

moley (moley), Monday, 7 November 2005 00:42 (twenty years ago)

-The Zimmermen, 1986ish

moley (moley), Monday, 7 November 2005 02:16 (twenty years ago)

My point being, 100 people is a moderately good night here, for most acts. 50-75 people is more typical.

moley (moley), Monday, 7 November 2005 02:17 (twenty years ago)

oh i wouldn't expect that many at most gigs, the launch is a different matter. the most payers we've ever had at one of our own non-launch gigs (i.e. not supporting someone else) probably hovers around 60-70

john p. irrelevant (electricsound), Monday, 7 November 2005 02:18 (twenty years ago)

Oh OK, fair enough. Well, your friends have to come of course. Our launch publicity was very personal - we sent separate emails to each of our friends titled, 'If You Still Want to be Our Friend'. We got 120 people and the club was happy enough.

moley (moley), Monday, 7 November 2005 02:26 (twenty years ago)

would that i had 120 friends..

we're on 3rrr tonight @ 10.15pm-ish. everyone should listen in. stream on internets

john p. irrelevant (electricsound), Monday, 7 November 2005 02:31 (twenty years ago)

john p. irrelevant (electricsound), Monday, 7 November 2005 03:27 (twenty years ago)

The ironing is, they ARE wireless now a days haha.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 7 November 2005 03:49 (twenty years ago)

At our last launch we had approximately 15 people there. H was one of them. Mind, we didn't really do any publicity.

Oh shit, we're on 3RRR tomorrow night, and the new EP's out in ten days, and we haven't even started recording yet. And they deleted our myspace page for copyright infringement.

I don't think I'll be able to make it on Saturday, I have a wedding to go to.

Sasha (sgh), Monday, 7 November 2005 03:56 (twenty years ago)

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 7 November 2005 05:59 (twenty years ago)

edward o (edwardo), Monday, 7 November 2005 06:10 (twenty years ago)

in the rawffle

john p. irrelevant (electricsound), Monday, 7 November 2005 06:13 (twenty years ago)

edward o (edwardo), Monday, 7 November 2005 06:15 (twenty years ago)

...and give it a big shove.

What's gotten your goatse, gaz? Have i been rude?

moley (moley), Monday, 7 November 2005 06:29 (twenty years ago)

i may no longer be cols friend.
-- mullygrubbr

Oh right, I get it. Sorry, I'm a bit slow. Of course you still are gaz, of course you are. How could I stay mad at you???? These are mainly Rachael's friends we're talking about. I only have one or two friends who ever come to these things. And I hardly ever go to their things either, so it's not surprising. I prefer to swap demos with them to be honest, and spend free time at home chilling and maybe writing a tune or two. I actually HATE going out.

moley, Monday, 7 November 2005 09:06 (twenty years ago)

Now I think about it, I really like Rachael's friends, and I'm happy going out if I'm going to be with her and her friends. I think it does her credit that these people are all, without exception, genuinely good hearted people. It creates a nice vibe in the room. However, what my friends and I all have in common is... we have nothing in common! And we all like it that way. We all fascinate each other with our amazingly different but highly unusual personalities. We really should all be working together.

john p. irrelevant (electricsound), Monday, 7 November 2005 22:05 (twenty years ago)

For a good counterpoint, The Salivation Army are presenting their top five rooting songs on 3RRR tonight at ~10.30pm.

Sasha (sgh), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 00:44 (twenty years ago)

Hey is DD one of your favourite films too Trayce? It's so super good.

salexander / sofia (salexander), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 08:29 (twenty years ago)

Yes, it totally is! Ive watched it soooo many times. I heart Jake Gyllenhaal, I have the soundtrack, I read all of the website um ok I'm a geek.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 09:39 (twenty years ago)

I love watching Boston Public, just so I can blurt out a 'WTF' every five minutes.

Mike Stuchbery (Mike Stuchbery), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 09:44 (twenty years ago)

The soundtrack is so good! (But with the director's cut they should have kept the original opening song, E&TB wasn't it? But it got switched to INXS. Oh well that is also a good song). Nono, it's not being a geek, just a "film buff." Which is cool.

Haha Boston Public is so amusingly melodramatic. Exactly how many gun-shootings, murders, abortions, student-teacher affairs etc etc etc can one school possibly have???

salexander / sofia (salexander), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 09:52 (twenty years ago)

Haha actually, the INXS song was Richard Kellys original choice! I can kinda see why, "never tear us apart" and all that, but some copyright reason prevented it, so they went with the Bunnymen. Which I totally think works better. Still havent seen the directors cut but I know most of what was left out, it was in the extras already :)

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 10:22 (twenty years ago)

Yeah I saw the director's cut about a year or so after the cinema release and really couldn't pick many differences - except for the songs - even though it was meant to be substantially different. It still had the same beginning and ending.

Drew Barrymore was so cool in it, and wasn't the film produced by her company? Ha "cellar door." I DO like the word "cellar," it sounds so pretty.

Anyway we should probably stop boring other people with all this DD talk. (But at least it's not Dungeons and Dragons or Drunk and Disorderly!)

salexander / sofia (salexander), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 11:13 (twenty years ago)

The director's cut sucks hard, he should totally hope for studio interference on his next film too.

It is seriously fucking awesome and while I resent this totally, this weekend I am buying a 6 seater Jamie Durie outdoor setting to stick out there.

My brother's family had a last minute freakout with their home sale - they'd bought a new one already, and then couldnt sell their old house for love or money. Quite some months went by where they had to pay 2 mortgages! Fuck knows how they managed that (my bro earns a lot tho).

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 10 November 2005 04:38 (twenty years ago)

Nah the problem is last minute demands from the buyer. She said we had to replace the seal around the bottom of the shower, which we did, now she's saying it hasn't been done to a high enough standard, which is bullshit because i saw it and it had been done properly, she wants $500 in lieu. Anyhow we've spoken to our solicitor and we're standing our ground. She can go fuck herself.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 10 November 2005 23:54 (twenty years ago)

Last time it happened up here, they made everyone get off the train and walk up the side of the tracks. The body was on the other side but you could see the blood on the *ahem*...tracks.

I gave a definition of satire because motherfuckers are stupid (papa november), Friday, 11 November 2005 00:02 (twenty years ago)

I was on one last year that pulled up at a station on a stinking hot day for a good ten minutes for no reason. when it pulled away I realised why - someone on one of the front carriages had a heart attack, they were still treating him on the platform.

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 13 November 2005 21:15 (twenty years ago)

It's not them, it's you! You want to have some kind of fulfillment in your life - which is so selfish! Only the very rich are allowed to have that.

We're still rehearsing up as a 4-piece. Man, humans are slow and they have opinions! I forgot about all that. Reminds me of why I went all electronic - wham bam, the track is in the can, ma'am! The route from brain to tape is super fast - minutes to hours, but never days.

We're going to run two versions of the Cherry - electroclash, with visual effects played via midi and keyboard by our friend Harriet, and rock n roll, with the two boys. We could then run the former in clubby environments and the latter in rock pig environments. This is the thinking at present - of course, one never knows the future.

molery, Sunday, 13 November 2005 21:16 (twenty years ago)

Yer damn right only the rich are allowed! ;P No one else can afford it dagblast it all!

Gonna put in for a couple days leave end of this week, at the least.

You know I am thinking I might go see the new boss and ask him what he thinks of me doing this part time. Now I dont need to do work for W00lworths anymore, thats like 60% of my days work gone. If I worked Tues-Thurs and had Friday-Monday off, that would be the best compromise without going broke. Hm.

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 13 November 2005 22:27 (twenty years ago)

Hell, *I* would dance to that :D

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 14 November 2005 03:08 (twenty years ago)

If you give me three square metres on the dancefloor to myself. I don't want anyone at your gigs getting hurt.

edward o (edwardo), Monday, 14 November 2005 03:09 (twenty years ago)

We're going to run two versions of the Cherry - electroclash, with visual effects played via midi and keyboard by our friend Harriet, and rock n roll, with the two boys. We could then run the former in clubby environments and the latter in rock pig environments.

OTOH you could be like the lcd soundsystem bloke, who wanted to reverse it and bring the band to dance clubs and DJ at rock shows!

revolting upstairs (haitch), Monday, 14 November 2005 03:11 (twenty years ago)

Well, good luck to him - maybe it's just an Aussie thing, but we have found both DJing in rock venues and rocking in dance clubs is a little weird, from our audience's point of view. The great exception is the queer clubs, where anything goes.

trayce does your office look down on swanston st? the oz says the numbers at the rally exceeded expectations! despite ACCI saying that 95% of australians were ignoring it.

http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,5744,17253045%255E1702,00.html

i'm so excited that so many people are prepared to protest.

xpost that's what the ACCI dude said:

http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,5744,17252508%255E601,00.html

wishful thinking then? it's hard for me to tell seeing as i work in a l4bor stronghold, so of course everyone is talking about it.

gem (trisk), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 02:30 (twenty years ago)

(xpost to gem)

Yeah it does! And the view was very much like the photo thats now in the Age, if you've seen it. Massive crowd!

And yet, one of my friends I thought was quite lefty was really angry that the protest got in the way of her getting to work on time.

Oh boo fuckin hoo.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 02:33 (twenty years ago)

gem (trisk), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 02:35 (twenty years ago)

It looked pretty massive in Sydney too - not that this was anything more than a passing and perhaps biased impression.

moley (moley), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 02:37 (twenty years ago)

I am ashamed to say until I got in this morning, I had NO idea this was all on. I dont know how I missed it all. I dont watch the news, thats one thing - but surely friends would have said "rally 9am Tuesday BE THAR".

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 02:41 (twenty years ago)

i dunno how you missed it either trayce! there's been a fair bit of coverage. i was bombarded with about 800 emails about it yesterday. but half of them were from the union so if you're not a union member and don't watch the news i guess it's understandable though.

gem (trisk), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 02:44 (twenty years ago)

Me: "Oh."
Doctor: "Just don't go kissing any girls."
Me: "Um..."
Doctor: "You already did?"
Me: "Yes. Two of them. And a boy. It was that kind of night."
Doctor: "You'd better tell them to see their doctor, though they're probably fine."
Me: "I didn't know them. It was that kind of night.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 07:17 (twenty years ago)

The SMS may or may not have gone like this (bearing in mind this is a friend of a friend of a friend, not someone I really know)

"Hi, it's Edward. I actually had glandular fever. Doctor says you probably won't get it, but watch yourself. I'd say sorry, but you grabbed me, not that I resisted. Sorry anyway."

I am a slurry. It's all MC Hammer's fault.

edward o (edwardo), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 07:20 (twenty years ago)

Mike Stuchbery (Mike Stuchbery), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 07:30 (twenty years ago)

Hey wait on tho Ed, you had a rash! What was all that about?

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 07:49 (twenty years ago)

Apparently a very small number of people get a rash. When my sis had it a few years ago, she also got a rash.

edward o (edwardo), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 07:54 (twenty years ago)

Oh ok, I didnt know that.

But oh dear. Glandular ain't fun. Try not to drink, it makes it worse. Get a lot of rest!

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 07:56 (twenty years ago)

As you'd know from teh lj, I'd actually been sick since the start of October, I'd just assumed it was lack of sleep. So I'm through the worst of it, and I feel much, much better. I'd been sleeping really long days last month, but am back to normal now, but I'm planning on doing absolutely nothing strenuous for the next week. I'm doing some web design, some writing, some assignments, and going to eat lots and lots until I get completely better. So worry not!

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 08:22 (twenty years ago)

And yeah, I hadn't thought that, you're right. It can go on for months, but if you've rested a lot you should be fine. Mine persisted because I didnt know I had it, and kept working too hard (physical job at the time, lots of lifting) and drinking too much (ie at all). GOt a knock-on case of chronic fatigue a few years later too which was worse. Blergh!

Oh um. But you'll be fine!

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 08:23 (twenty years ago)
