YES.

Dan (Pollster McPollkins) Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 16:50 (twenty years ago)

Go Chargers? (aka an implicit 'yeah sure' vote even though my connection with the NFL is mostly only that)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 16:51 (twenty years ago)

yes. would offer services as a mod, too, if necessary.

Yes.
I would read it

Stan Fields (Stan Fields), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 17:04 (twenty years ago)

also I'm perfectly willing to mod, and also this will make me disappear off ILE for 6 months of the year.

Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 17:07 (twenty years ago)

sure why not what the hell, although why not I LOVE PIGSKIN to include college football too

(I would never post obv)

Future "I Love the NFL" threads:

C/D: Tackle-eligible goal-line plays
TS: Reggie White vs. Bruce Smith
Wheel route vs. cover 2 FITE
Defend the Indefensible: Romo
POX: Third-down backs
C/D: Polecat formation

No.
Current or all time?
Usually dud, I prefer "muddle huddle" even though it's even less descriptive of a name than polecat.

Permanent no huddle offense, now there's a topic I can get behind.

Dave Meggett is really a pretty good choice!

Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 18:05 (twenty years ago)

The biggest moment of conflict in my life was seriously that Giants-Bills super bowl.

go to hell!

(see this new board will be extremely tense!)

gear (gear), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 18:13 (twenty years ago)

I will tell you a true story, my friend. The very first guy I really remember overly liking was this kid, D4ve S4lzburg. One day, in art class in 7th grade, he announced to all and sundry that "everybody knows" that the "only good player" on the Buffalo Bills was Thurman Thomas (this is while he's wearing a Bills t-shirt). I never, ever spoke to him again. And also set off a firecracker in class, to shut him up. It's a tense, hostile sport.

Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 18:32 (twenty years ago)

what a fucking tool! what, he didn't know about Bruce Smith and Jim Kelly and Andre Reed and James Lofton and, shit i dunno, half the fucking team? what a douchebag. fuck that guy. being in 7th grade is no excuse.

gear (gear), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 18:36 (twenty years ago)

i don't even like the bills! but even i recognized, while blindly following the doomed bears every season.

gear (gear), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 18:38 (twenty years ago)

7th grade isn't an excuse for ANYTHING. I mean how do you walk around WEARING a Bills t-shirt and proclaiming nonsense like that? I should've fucking put off the firecracker in his ear.

Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 18:40 (twenty years ago)

a guy like that is probably a big pats fan today.

Why not I Love Sports?

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 20:49 (twenty years ago)

I Love Sports is a bad idea because what will happen is what inevitably happens when sports intermingle with each other on various ILE threads, which is X sport's purist fans start getting bitchy towards the people who used some comparision or brought up Z sport.

-- Allyzay knows a little German (allyza...) (webmail), November 2nd, 2005 10:25 AM. (allyzay) (later) (link)

The aside being that there already are individual boards for baseball, basketball, and wrestling--do you just go ahead and delete them? I don't think those people would be that happy.

Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 20:53 (twenty years ago)

Don't get me started on Matt Millen. That guy signed Az Hakim, Bill Schroeder, and JAQUEZ FUCKING GREEN all in one offseason! What was he trying to do, create an army of mediocre slot wide receivers?

My Future threads:

-Defend the indefensible: Dave Brown
-POX: Denver Running backs
-TS: Vertical ("air" Coryell) vs. horizontal (Bill Walsh) passing attacks
-When did Peter King jump the shark?

Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 21:05 (twenty years ago)

I'm kinda opposed to almost anything that would take the soccer threads off ILE (re: ILSports), that there's not a dedicated board seems to do a really good job of keeping them at a pub-conversation-type level I'm really really fond of.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 21:07 (twenty years ago)

I really hope this board happens. I'm a somewhat regular poster on ILM, but haven't posted on ILE much at all.

I'm already starting to think of ways to defend Dave Brown. The guy had all of the intangibles, except, uh, athletic ability.

ah, it wasn't any big deal -- he was guesting on a sports talk radio show here in Chicago that they do by remote from restaurants around the city. My buddy is the remote engineer for the station so from time-to-time I'd drop by and hang out with him and watch the show. So this one week they had Levy on, and I came by and got to meet him... It was cool! I told him how my family was from Rochester and that we were all big Bills fans, and he was like "oh yeah, Rochester, great city, we have a lot fans from there." Later, I was sitting at the bar when he was on his way out and he passed by and slapped me on the arm and said "take care!" Not a very exciting story, but it was awesome to meet THE MAN.

Sublimely sublimely wonderfully ridiculously sublime. The man is my favorite current writer. I don't mean favorite sports writer, I mean favorite writer, period: "Curley Culp was the finest man ever to play the nose, which takes more skill than playing the accordion."

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Thursday, 3 November 2005 13:40 (twenty years ago)

never mind, i guess AFL is aussie foopball.

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Thursday, 3 November 2005 13:45 (twenty years ago)

Ah NFL/AFL is just a joke--the American football league used to be 2 different leagues many years ago, the NFL and the AFL. The two merged into one a while back.

If you wanted to call it something just like "I Love American Football" that seems ok to me, so college ball fans can contribute too.

Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Thursday, 3 November 2005 15:08 (twenty years ago)

does this mean we can legitimately reuse the AFL board (if we ask politely) with a quick re-name?

or would that be bad? is this like Rugby League vs Rugby union?

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Thursday, 3 November 2005 15:21 (twenty years ago)

Oh no AFL (Australian Football League) versus AFL (American Football League, now AFC American Football Conference) would be two different things?

Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Thursday, 3 November 2005 15:22 (twenty years ago)

This is overly complicated, people should be required to name their sports leagues all completely different things so no one gets confused.

Personal fouls on everyone in this thread for making unnatural posts, uncommon to the boards.

Dude, Kerry Collins can be one of the best qbs in the league if you surround him with two all-pro receivers, an all-pro tight end and running back, as well as an all-pro offensive line.

Don't forget that the defense has to give him good field position.

In all honesty, though, he was pretty good during the Giant's 2000 season.

the only thing holding dez white or brian finneran back from the probowl is not having mark brunell or kerry collins taking snaps

Dude, thing is you may be right. Finneran looked pretty good with with Matt Schaub under center?

And then there's the sad, sad story of Peerless Price...

Year Team G GS No Yards Avg Lg TD 20+ 40+ FD
2001 Buffalo Bills 16 16 55 895 16.3 70 7 16 4 37
2002 Buffalo Bills 16 16 94 1252 13.3 73 9 16 6 57
2003 Atlanta Falcons 16 15 64 838 13.1 49 3 9 5 40
2004 Atlanta Falcons 16 15 45 575 12.8 50 3 8 2 28

i like winning over playing the game the white right way

Dear Mr. The Greek,

With Week 8 in the books, Vick has exactly one more rushing TD than Vinnie Testaverde, and Peyton Manning has two more wins.

anyhoo, seriously, Vick's great fun to watch and does force defenses to account for containing him on every down, which in turn opens up running lanes for a quick little fella like Warrick Dunn. The threat of the forward pass is pretty nice too though, in theory.

I got no issue with Vick love, but "all his forms and guises" still need a little work is all.

You should've read Skip Bayliss's article on ESPN after Peerless Price was cut from the Falcons and Dallas picked him up. Bayliss went off, basically saying "OH MY GOD THE ONLY THING HOLDING PEERLESS PRICE FROM BLOWING UP IS THE TERRIBLE PASSING OF MICHAEL VICK. HE'S GONNA OWN THE LEAGUE NOW THAT HE'S IN DALLAS"

Didn't quite work out that way. Still; Vick needs to be more accurate. I'm not sure if the WCO suits him. Dan Reeves' offense was better for him (he was a good passer the full season under that O).

Vick's gonna be a monster in 2 years. watch and see. He's still working out the kinks, but he's going to have seasons closer to Steve Young's best than to what he's doing now.

I am all in favor of confining all lengthy or seriously-intended discussions of the NFL, its heirs or assigns, to whatever cramped and impoverished ghetto ILX can devise for them. ILE should then be purged of all mention of the NFL, except for those occuring in an Excelsior thread.

Skip Bayless is such a cocksucker.

The thing about M. Vick is, he seems to be regressing as a passer. He's in what they say is a very complicated system, so the first two seasons may the dreaded learning curve. Regardless, for pure running ability, he may not be able to top his 2002 season.

the falcons have ty detmer on their roster, maybe they can take ilx's genius suggestions (from the crew that brought you 'actually the whitesox were worse than the bluejays this year') and install him at starter for certain superbowl glory.

it's only football teams that suck if they don't make the playoffs, blount.

As much as Vick could stand to improve his completion percentage, the thing about him that drives me nuts is that he does not protect the football at all. Vick fumbles way too often, many times because he just doesn't tuck it and trys running into traffic palming the ball. It is a really bad habit that I would imagine coaches have been trying to break him of since high school.

I also do not know why MV doesn't use the slide more, as being this super athletic QB, he would probably pickup yardage from people clocking him out of frustration. The QBs getting that slide rule should be a double benefit for him, being that he runs more than any other, but he takes unneeded hits. Crap...slide and take the same hit and get 15 extra yards. If Vick gets good at this sliding thing, then maybe the NFL will scrap that rule and let them clobber QBs again.

The way Vick plays letting people hit him and trying to make too much of every run, one day his body will go one way and his knee the other in a hit and the game will be over. I'm not looking forward to it, but the guy has been somewhat fragile and I think by odds it will eventually happen.

So is there any chance that Marcus could be a better NFL QB than his brother? I haven't seen any VT games this year, though I want to try to watch the Miami game this weekend (which would give a good idea of how Marcus would handle an NFL-style defense).

rasheed wallace (rasheed wallace), Friday, 4 November 2005 03:15 (twenty years ago)

If you have seen highlights of Texas play, I think the next generation of the Mike Vick style QB could be Vince Young. He made some sick runs last weekend in their big comeback win.

"he does not protect the football at all" - ok this is very very true, not so crazy bout this guise admittedly.

OK blount you are right now arguing with a bunch of people who were totally against that argument (save Mr. "The Colts Suck"), this doesn't hold water.
