I thought February would never get here but it's coming around. The Sopranos. Do you like it?

Tracer Hand, Saturday, 5 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The question could be off-putting because of the Sopranos' value as a kind of deluxe maple symbol of your ability to afford HBO. But whatever, I have a housemate, and we split it. The Sopranos is the main reason.

Tracer Hand, Saturday, 5 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Let me say this. I don't have cable. I have a rather negative view of television in general. But on Thanksgiving afternoon, my roommates rented all of the Sopranos 2nd season from Blockbuster, and I honestly sat in one spot for close to SEVEN HOURS watching the ENTIRE SEASON BACK TO BACK. It's that fucking good. And...I wanted more.

Gage-o, Saturday, 5 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I liked it when I was getting HBO for free at my old apartment. I have no idea what it's like now.

Nicole, Saturday, 5 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's uneven, but some episodes are very very good. I'm thinking in particular of the Buscemi-directed "Pine Barrens" episode from last season where Chris and Paulie get lost in the snow, and Tony and Annabelle Sciorra really have it out. The sound effects people outdid themselves on the various ways cell phones can break up. The scriptwriters outdid themselves by twisting Beckett and Tennessee Williams around each other like wysteria (connected only by the faulty cellphone). The actors outdid each other by breaking through their reserves of cool and actually showing their need.

Tracer Hand, Saturday, 5 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sopranos = Twin Peaks for the new Millenium.

JM, Sunday, 6 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

compared to 'twin peaks' with respect to...?

I don't think a whole lot of 'the sopranos'.

You're getting The Sopranos confuzed with Six Feet Under!!!!!!!

five years pass...

Someone on the radio, a (here at least) famous rock journo, said of Sopranos:"GOOD RIDDANCE! They wanted Tony to be LIKEABLE! How crap is taht?" hahahahahah I never roffled so much since I saw him at a journo-wanko talk in Amsterdam about 7 years ago.

I don't know why exactly, but I think Phil Leotardo doesn't look as a convincing threatening badass villain. Maybe he lacks charisma. When Ralph or Johnny Sack or Richie is on the screen you could really feel their presences. Not so with Phil.

Starting season 4. Notes on series so far: LOVE Adirana La Cerva, LOVE Artie Bucco (wish there was more of him), also wish there was more Ginny Sack.

Can't stand AJ at ALL. Kind of wish he'd just get killed off. Also frustrated with the whole "Meadow you're so spoiled, we give you everything" / "GOD mom leave me aLONE!!" runarounds, where nothing actually happens (she keeps getting spoiled and is a brat). Could do without her too.

modern eunuch-like crooning (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 8 April 2010 23:56 (fifteen years ago)

I had a friend who recently declined to watch this series because she felt overly squeamish about any potential violence. I felt she was really missing out and would otherwise enjoy it... otoh I couldn't really argue that the violence in it could be ignored/overlooked.

modern eunuch-like crooning (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 9 April 2010 00:00 (fifteen years ago)

yeah i am not that attracted to the violence either

plax (ico), Friday, 9 April 2010 00:02 (fifteen years ago)

still, what i have seen of this seemed pretty good, but like i started watching for a little while around s4 i think so i mean i constantly didn't understand the backstory and it was p confusing iirc

plax (ico), Friday, 9 April 2010 00:03 (fifteen years ago)

the violence isn't constant and it isn't exploitatively or crassly done. In fact, it's very well done and thus unsettling - as violence should be.

modern eunuch-like crooning (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 9 April 2010 00:14 (fifteen years ago)

I'm surprised to hear that, plax. I think many of the episodes are prettty much self-contained, with only a reference or two to tie it into the ongoing storyline. As far as serialized shows go, there are plenty that are much much harder to jump into. Of course, I watched them all in order anyway, and that's just my take as a fan, so who really knows.

Nearing the end of Season 5. Tony has gotten so rotten and awful, I seriously hope he just dies at this point. AJ, too, has managed to become even worse; hope someone kills him too. I can't count the number of times I want to just jump through the screen and say the things that need to be said that clearly aren't; it's amazing how passive (re: bad) Tony and Carmela are when it comes to parenting. I wish there was more Gabriella Dante, and I wish Adrianna wasn't so pathetic all the time. She used to be so great!

limp bizkotti (Stevie D), Tuesday, 25 May 2010 03:40 (fifteen years ago)

Also despite the fact that I'm 10 episodes into Season 5, I STILL have not recognized a single shooting location which makes me feel like a rly bad New Jerseyan. There was one episode that took place at Mason Gross (Rutgers' art school) but it was at some old building that I can't seem to locate.

limp bizkotti (Stevie D), Tuesday, 25 May 2010 03:41 (fifteen years ago)

Also also I seriously have managed to make it this far without hearing abt the series finale. Please no one spoil it.

I loved (hated) how Carm was so dead set on divorce at the end of one episode and then lets him move back in TWENTY MINUTES into the next episode. This is awful writing and makes absolutely no sense. Also, of course rly bummed about Ade; I knew she had it coming but I wish it was more dramatic or something.

Two eps into season 6 and it's quite an improvement, although it makes 0 sense how AJ somehow suddenly grew a brain so late into his development as a human being.

no! carm was always like this!

she would never, ever leave tony

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 26 May 2010 06:00 (fifteen years ago)

She tried to divorce him so hardcore!! She went through all those lawyers and got so exasperated but was still determined, and I was all "YES, this woman is finally doing what is right for HER!". But, no.

Ginny Sack, on the other hand, I think she is my favorite woman on the show right now. They should've just made a spinoff, "Ginny & Carm" (or "Ginny, Carm & Gabby")

limp bizkotti (Stevie D), Wednesday, 26 May 2010 06:17 (fifteen years ago)

Also just heard Prodigy's "Spitfire" in the Bing. The ultimate song.

limp bizkotti (Stevie D), Wednesday, 26 May 2010 06:21 (fifteen years ago)

i think the thing the show always circled back to is that, for as strong as carm is in many regards, she is still a woman who was attracted to the violence & glitz of the mob, and who married a mobster, and who is as susceptible to succumbing to the bloody treasures that come with that life. of course it was infuriating when after episodes of giving it straight to tony, she would be dazzled by a coat or a watch, but that's who she is. she could never leave that life, she was always leveraging, even during the genuine heartbreak.

needless to say she's one of the best and most compelling television characters of the last 20 years

OK AM ABT TO DROP MAJOR SPOILERS SO IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN ALL THE EPISODES.....

I can't believe I managed to go 4 years without even the slightest hint of how this show ended. Of course I was sort of stunned. I thought it was really stupid how Melfi reads one fucking article and after 7 years of dedication is suddenly all "OMG I JUST CAN'T; GET OUT." It seems totally out of line w/ her character. Still trying to figure out what I think of the last scene, but why was there so much emphasis on Meadow's botched parallel parking jobs? WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?

Also, I feel like the only truly likeable characters by the end of the show are Ginny Sack and Meadow (who was pretty insufferable early on). I hated Paulie and pretty much every other male on the show by the end (spare Johnny Cakes who I compleeeetely fell in love with and wanted to marry). Rly wish Ginny actually got her own spinoff.

One F.B.I. agent told us early on that on Monday morning they would get to the F.B.I. office and all the agents would talk about The Sopranos. Then they would listen to the wiretaps from that weekend, and it was all Mob guys talking about The Sopranos, having the same conversation about the show, but always from the flip side. We would hear back that real wiseguys used to think that we had somebody on the inside. They couldn’t believe how accurate the show was.

the sir edmund hillary of sitting through pauly shore films (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 21 March 2012 21:59 (thirteen years ago)

She had cancer the whole time we worked with her, but it was not spoken of. Nancy said to David, “Please keep me working. That’s keeping me alive.” One of the funnest times I remember is shooting a family scene with a lot of food in the room. It was like three in the morning at the end of a long day of shooting, and they had done Livia’s coverage and then they were doing my coverage. Here’s the camera, here’s Nancy, and she’s actually making faces and she’s eating a piece of pepperoni—slapping on her tongue—in the middle of my scene. She was trying to make me laugh for my coverage, like a little kid does right out of college.

I freaking hate that Steve Buscemi is a character in this show. Lots of kind of iffy moments in the Sopranos but most of its flaws are endearing in some way; Buscemi just sucks, comes on the show and does his I'm-the-weird-Steve-Buscemi-guy thing for an entire season.

balls, Saturday, 8 June 2013 19:11 (twelve years ago)

i agree in general that tony dies, but what's so interesting about how its presented is how that assumption is always taking place in an extra-textual space--"death" isn't really something that signifies anything to you while you're alive. so i think it goes both ways: in the terms of the text tony is suspended forever in dread and anxiety and on the "other" side he's nothing.

haha sorry j. i guess im saying its schrodinger's tony soprano.

ryan, Saturday, 8 June 2013 20:04 (twelve years ago)

But who killed him? The main problem with the final episode is the lengths it goes to to get to that 'schroedinger' state. Like, sort of resolving the war, but then perhaps not quite, but then not really giving any reason as to why it would go on. Also I think the preceding scene with junior, exploring what is quite honestly the best cause scenario for Tony, is that much more chilling than the death-anxiety of the end. It should just have ended with junior saying 'that's nice'. Cut to black. imo.

Frederik B, Saturday, 8 June 2013 20:17 (twelve years ago)

There isn't one truth about Tony's fate. That's kind of the whole point of the open ending; of any open ending for that matter. We've all been on the ride up to that final cut off point. Tony indeed is like Schrödinger's Cat: he is both dead and alive. All depends on your conviction.

To me he wasn't killed, but I can see why others think he was killed.

Damo Suzuki's Parrot, Sunday, 7 July 2013 17:12 (twelve years ago)

yeah that interpretation seems so plainly correct that i feel dumb for not seeing it the first time through.

tony getting whacked due to carelessness and hubris (as opposed to being eternally plagued by paranoia) makes sense given his character, as it's consistently established throughout the show that he keeps surviving/staying out of prison largely out of pure luck, luck that is bound to run out and that kept dwindling as the show went on.

Chewshabadoo, Monday, 8 July 2013 18:54 (twelve years ago)

I read that before I saw the last season, so I was fully expecting it to be the truth, but I don't think it holds up. If we're just supposed to think that he dies, then the rest of the episode does an awful job of making that seem like a good ending. It's such a mess, really.

Frederik B, Monday, 8 July 2013 20:59 (twelve years ago)

I've said this just recently, but by itself, the final scene is a brilliant piece of filmmaking. It doesn't fit with the rest of the episode.

Frederik B, Monday, 8 July 2013 21:48 (twelve years ago)

Haven't watched it since it aired, but I remember being halfway through the last episode and wondering why they were spending time introducing us to AJ's new girlfriend.

lols lane (Eazy), Monday, 8 July 2013 21:52 (twelve years ago)

It is a great ending in the manner in which it spares you all the standard bathos of the death scene and the aftermath, don't need to see Tony going into the light or having flashbacks before he kicks the bucket. Seen it before in countless movies and it would detract from everything about Tony which makes the series good. Don't want want to see him defeated and gurgling blood on the deck, he has been whacked and The Sopranos is finished.

I look fwd to the deepening of Christopher's character then, as you can't have tragedy centered on pure vermin.

I can give Chase a pass for making Tony a WC Fields fan, but "I screened The Bank Dick last night"? Tony Sotosyn!

The ellipses are crafty in some of the episodes, like you don't know what made Livia's Jamaican maid stomp out -- well you do, but you don't hear it. (Also savvy bcz even tho Ma is clearly a gorgon, the direct evidence is elided in this case.) Also you don't see the Hasidic guy whose father-in-law wants him zotzed beg for his testicles in the basement of the meat store.

also-christopher was a huge fuckup and junkie and liability and obviously should have been killed in season one. he wasn't because tony has a sentimental streak and he saw chris as his surrogate son. this narrative tension drove a large part of the show! like why did fredo last so long, etc. family and Family get all intertwined..it's a pretty common trope in crime fiction.

'world destruction' is too hip, so is 'evidently chickentown'. using them is powerful to me because it feels like the narrative zooms out for a bit, it's like a little aside from the palm of god/the author. i totally get that it could take people out of the narrative though. it's a risk.

Uncle Beppy is a better name than Uncle Junior tho. (Also, I distinctly remember my grandma, who lived in Newark nearly her whole life, talking about a restaurant named Beppy's.)

son of a lewd monk (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 30 July 2014 15:34 (eleven years ago)

Related to Sopranos origins and Newark, this is from Philip Roth's I Married A Communist (1998):

He got his name (Little Pussy) because he started out professionally as a cat burglar, sneaking across the rooftops and going in through the windows with his older brother, Big Pussy. In grade school they were already up all night stealing. When they even bothered to come to school, they sat sleeping at their desks and nobody dared to waker them up. Big Pussy died of natural causes, and Little Pussy was bumped off in 1979 in real gangland style...three bullets from a .32 in his head. The next day Ritchie Boiardo tells one of his cronies, "Perhaps it was for the best--because he talked too much."

the one where, as balls alludes (Eazy), Wednesday, 30 July 2014 16:09 (eleven years ago)

There was also a Beppy on The Sopranos (played by David Chase's actual uncle, I just read). He was one of the really old school guys in Junior's crew, I think last seen kicking up to Junior and attempting to plot an escape attempt for him with Uncle Pat.

whether you liked Not Fade Away on one viewing or not, I didn't understand the dismissal of it as "another cliched '60s rock movie." Obviously it's 'the stuff between' that is the key.

So when he answered the "Did Tony die" question, he was laconic.

Just the fact and no interpretation. He shook his head "no." And he said simply, "No he isn't." That was all.

i think it's part of the point but i also think it's not unresolved at all, and i think chase's reluctance to answer maybe stems from his thinking that it doesn't need to be explained and to explain it robs it of its poetry.

UPDATE: Chase's publicist put out the following statement:

A journalist for Vox misconstrued what David Chase said in their interview. To simply quote David as saying,“ Tony Soprano is not dead,” is inaccurate. There is a much larger context for that statement and as such, it is not true.

As David Chase has said numerous times on the record, “Whether Tony Soprano is alive or dead is not the point.” To continue to search for this answer is fruitless. The final scene of THE SOPRANOS raises a spiritual question that has no right or wrong answer.

Chase cast entirely out of New York, at least in the first season, as Allen generally has. Though the only substantial actor in a Woody film I can think of is Jerry Adler in Manhattan Murder Mystery, who played Hesh the slick lawyer in Sopranos.

The way Tony and his lower-case family are talking around the coffee shop table in the last ep, it's like they've already dismissed the Family---and of course, cousin*/"nephew"/maybe "son" Christopher is dead, surrogate uncle or brother Sal the sane manager is dead, Tony as boss or whatever his title is, seems dead in the water power-wise--prob doesn't have all that much money, since he didn't at his peak,as his senior Jewish consultant, the guy with the studio, once estimated for another non-made guy. So, whether those guys really are coming to kill him and maybe his relatives or not--hell, maybe they're working for him now, some new bodyguards or something---it's just another thing that happens, in the midst of and after a bunch of other stuff.
*Back when Cousin Buscemi got out of prison and started palling around with Tony, as little Christopher trailed behind, made fun of by the big guys, like when they were all three kids: think that was when Carmela explained to another lady that he was a cousin, but so young that Tony felt obliged or moved to treat him as his nephew.

this is otm. tony doesn't die onscreen, so he's technically alive at the end of the show. but he might die in 5 minutes, or it might be 5 years. i think one of the points of the show is that living that life will eventually have consequences for you and the people you love. he can't escape it

I can't really honestly say that Oz > Sopranos, but it's a really fun version of what a 'prestige' television show could be, all weird visuals and sex and death. There are ways that Sopranos became the prestige template, which, looking back, seem a bit unfortunate to me. David Chase always had a chip on his shoulder about doing 'tv' and really wanted to do a film, but his taste in film seems pretty boring and vanilla, pretty boring nineties indie stuff. The irony is that it was Tom Fontana, not Chase, who ended up having a real influence on modern cinema, as Lars von Trier has admitted being very influenced by Homicide in his nineties stuff like Dogme, which of course then was hugely influential on a bunch of stuff.

I just think today, with peak tv and hundreds and hundreds of tv shows, every success has so many imitators that it's kinda fun to see stuff that people don't really bother making anymore. I miss shows like Oz :( Even though something like Orange is the New Black is probably a better show as well, strictly speaking.

Seitz and Sepinwall have a new book imminent, The Sopranos Sessions. Related a NYC Sopranos film fest that features both The Public Enemy and Barry Lyndon, along with more direct content:

the authors speak:

We didn’t get him to admit Tony died or anything like that. He was saying that the original intention was to have intimations that Tony died, but he moved away from that to something more philosophical in nature. But David would talk about things being intentional without really being intentional. I asked him: Is it possible that a lifetime of consuming gangster films where heroes die at the end left a flavor? And he said, “That’s possible.”

My Sopranos story is that last week I saw a complete Sopranos box-set in a charity shop and bought it immediately. I visited my 83 y.o. mum and left the box there by accident. This has crossed my mind watching too -- at times they seem like they are communicative and affectionate, and both seem to have libido. Marriage doesn't seem bad enough to be sexless for some reason. One of the minor dissonances of the show for me.

just watched the ep where Furio evidently realises it would be a "bad idea" to go any further with Carmela, it's kind of heart-breaking. One of the good things about him as a character (along with Syl and to some extent Paulie) is that you're never given a window into their internal life, you're left to infer this stuff

Neil S, Friday, 22 February 2019 19:17 (seven years ago)

the Furio/Carm love story has some really well done details, like Carm getting defensive when someone says his ponytail makes him look like he has a cock growing out of the back of his head. And Furio seeing the red mist and getting primal while pissed up Tony is stood close to those rotor blades.

I really don't understand how Gandolfini's son is playing Tony. The kid is 19 this year, the series established Tony's birthdate as 1959/60, and the movie takes place in the turbulent Newark of the '60s.

It strikes me a lot of episodes that Tony might not be a particularly talented or cunning boss. He’s not dumb and he knows how to survive but he’s not brilliant either and sometimes maybe too soft.

~mine own~ bitcoin (darraghmac), Sunday, 10 March 2019 14:54 (six years ago)

Overall I liked the plot, but it felt very "we need to get these characters out before the end of the season." You could feel the writers' cramp -- Ritchie had to die but it didn't quite feel right to have Janis widowed by her own brother while also having the two of them reconcile slightly and having her leave town. I had a hard time reading what Janis's motivation was supposed to be. She's normally very calculating. Was this calculated, or was it a genuine momentary angry reaction to what Ritchie did?

OTOH loved the S2 ending.

The Sopranos

A classic take on the most beloved genre which clearly suggests the crazy love it received from the audience but also left a long lasting impression on critics and awards shows where it took away five justified Golden Globes to its home. The Sopranos is a character driven series about a family that basically runs the whole town, just illegally.

The writing is adaptive, gripping and ground-breaking on terms of its structure that is so eerily easy as it slips away from the audience like some jelly; it is sweet, nutritious and immensely pleasing. It is rich on technical aspects like its metaphorical cinematography, sharp sound effects and up beating songs along with palpable background score. The series is shot beautifully, each and every color sparks up neatly; especially the visuals that are taken in sunny days are amazing.

The performance by the cast is plausible since the effort is clearly visible but Gandolfini, Bracco, Falco and Imperioli stands alone due to their easiness in their acts. Gandolfini; at the heart of it, oozes power and the aegis nature which is what helps makers keep the audience rooting for the character.

The relationship between Gandolfini and Bracco is the highlight of the series due its fragile tone which is soothing to experience as it lights up the series in a whole new way. Pragmatic conversations, three dimensional character, gut-wrenching politics, brawny dialogues and brilliant execution are the high points of the feature that makes it one of the best series.

Season 04

This fourth act is more professional and business than personal and yet it is more emotionally competent, if not among the best. But with new additions of characters and expected threat, it has got the right amount of crispiness as much as it is husky.

Pie-O-My

Drunk in its emotional conflicts, it demands viewers' attention and creates the anticipated genuine impact whose credit goes to Gandolfini's stellar performance, while the rest of the act is set upon backstage more than it usually does.

Minor subplot but great is the speeding ticket with the cop who winds up working at Fountains of Wayne. At first it doesn’t make sense — why does Tony vascillate between vengeful and soft hearted? But in the last scene it becomes clear: it’s control. He can’t stand the fact that there’s someone he can’t manipulate, whether through rage, bribes, kindness, or displays of power.

Man, the Tracie episode was hard to watch. Tony feels sad about it, a girl his own daughter’s age, yet he enables Ralphie and directly profits off the exploitation of Tracie. It’s literally what puts his own daughter in the nice, safe, Ivy League school she’s attending while it all goes down.

I've got to say that Carmela's send-off to Father Phil (probably Season 1's creepiest character) in the season finale is, word-for-word and gesture-for-gesture, brilliant. Killed me: "...I think a lot of it is tied up with food somehow."

Finished the rewatch a couple of nights ago.

Pretty great--even more so than the first time (five years ago). I'll stand by Mad Men as my favourite show ever, but the gap closed: Mad Men, The Sopranos, and then whatever I'd put next.

I could go on about so many incredible moments--one from the last season: the shot of Junior that closes the episode where his friend attacks him in the home (the actor that played his friend was great)--but I'll do what I usually do instead, dwell on a couple of things that missed the mark for me. It's a weird sort of compliment with me.

I didn't feel the Tony-Melfi relationship was resolved in a way that justified all the time that was spent on it. I loved Tony yelling "I get it!" at the end of the peyote episode, and then, a couple of episodes later, she ends it because she's miffed over some article. I didn't feel like it was consistent with her character; it felt like they wanted to finish that off somehow but didn't quite know how.

I don't think everything has to be wrapped up--I don't think that at all--but I did want Carmela to find out the truth about Ade and Christopher. I wanted that moment to happen. (I think Ade's story her last season was about as tragic and moving as television gets.)

A.J.--tough one. In the whole series run, through all his different phases, I don't know if I actually liked him for more than 30 minutes. Pretty nervy by the writers to follow that though to the end. Even with all that, I still felt empathy for him that last season.

The music was better than I remembered. The end of that one episode, where Carmela learns of Meadow's engagement, starts crying, looks out at Tony floating in the pool, and Bobby Darin's "If I Were a Carpenter" starts up, that was almost as good as "Both Sides Now" in Mad Men.

20/20 hindsight, but that first season, if you had to bet on one character to be preternaturally indestructible, Paulie would have been the guy.

clemenza, Tuesday, 7 July 2020 01:55 (five years ago)

A.J. is pure comedy

Yanni Xenakis (Hadrian VIII), Tuesday, 7 July 2020 02:10 (five years ago)

The writers openly mocked him at times, for sure. The bear episode--"Mommy, mommy!" Not sure what I wanted there...something more, somehow.

clemenza, Tuesday, 7 July 2020 02:20 (five years ago)

I always liked A.J. just for being helpless in the face of that upbringing, and I loved the way they leaned into it. That's really how shitheads are made!

Yanni Xenakis (Hadrian VIII), Tuesday, 7 July 2020 02:25 (five years ago)

I thought he was a great, and touching, portrait of a kid who had been raised to be a failure in his father's eyes - felt like it tapped into the hypocrisy of American values, that they valued toughness, indulged his every whim then condemned him for being soft and expecting things to fall into his lap. In many ways he is the real tragic figure of the series, much more so than Meadow who mouthed platitudes and virtue signalled, but when push came to shove was totally complicit in her privilege and where it came from.

assert (MatthewK), Tuesday, 7 July 2020 02:25 (five years ago)

Interesting points that I'll mull over...Agree that they lost Meadow's character towards the end; she became more and more conventional. (I found it moving, though, when she told A.J. that as Italians, he was always going to be the favoured child; her resignation there--and A.J. seemingly not knowing what to make of her words--was perfect.)

I bought a critical book on The Sopranos a few years ago, I ought to read that right now.

clemenza, Tuesday, 7 July 2020 02:34 (five years ago)

See I read that as Meadow tossing another chip on her pile of self-pity, ignoring her massive privilege and advantage. The family is full of people doing that, probably the most penetrating social criticism the show made.

assert (MatthewK), Tuesday, 7 July 2020 02:55 (five years ago)

and - duh - I forgot that the talisman of the final series is the "Ojibwe saying" pinned by the writers to Tony's hospital notice board, "Sometimes I go about in pity for myself, and all the while, a great wind carries me across the sky." It gets half a dozen callbacks from there to the end, as Tony misapplies it to people he wants to put down.

assert (MatthewK), Tuesday, 7 July 2020 05:00 (five years ago)

(I think Ade's story her last season was about as tragic and moving as television gets.)

agreed on this. we watched the series for the first time last year, and from the minute she started working as an informant you just feel, "Jeez, well, there's only one way this ends."

Christopher getting high at the fairground while Fred Neil's "Dolphins" plays is one of the most moving parts of the series, I think

Neil S, Tuesday, 7 July 2020 08:53 (five years ago)

The closing tracks were always spot on...John Cooper Clarke's "Evidently Chickentown" portending the forthcoming gang war during the christening scene, and Van Morrison's "Glad Tidings" hopping in after Tony Uncle Bobby guns down Tony Uncle Johnny, that jaunty bass line signaling a strange sense of relief/closure...also "This Magic Moment" when Bobby meets up with his family at the lake house, his life having irrevocably changed...

"Living On A Thin Line" by the Kinks was prominently featured in one episode ("University", maybe?) Was played three times, which puts it up there with "Tiny Tears" in the Sopranos pantheon. Least-likely stripper song ever. Also, was surprised to hear "Wood Cabin" by Saint Etienne playing in the background when Jimmy the rat was whacked in Season One.

henry s, Wednesday, 8 July 2020 11:26 (five years ago)

(xpost) Yeah, "I'm Not Like Everybody Else" was great. Don't think I ever hated Tony as much as his pointless baiting/escalation at that dinner table.

I wasn't sure what I was hearing--it definitely sounded like Ray Davies, yet it didn't sound like a 1966 B-side (I don't think I actually have the song). I thought I might have been hearing a cover version from the last decade or so. A live version explains that.

yikes that looks embarrassingly self-parodic. Has Vera Farmiga fallen into the most bizarre niche of typecasting?

Gandolfini's son already laughably tried to play a teenager in The Deuce—I didn't know who he was at first so was deeply confused why they didn't just cast an actual teen actor. He was more convincing when they let him play a sleazy douchebag stock broker in the third season, but he's...not his dad

thewufs, Wednesday, 30 June 2021 01:42 (four years ago)

Do we know for sure that Gandolfini is involved in the Newark riots portion of the movie? I always thought the focus of this was supposed to be more on Dickie, so it could begin in the 60s, with Tony not showing up until it progresses to the 70s.

idk probably better enjoyed on a small screen. I had zero expectations and didn’t expect a crime-and-family story for the ages, just an extended episode set in the sopranoverse.

Sil's bad Pacino impression, Ralph quoting Gladiator, Phil griping about '20 years in the can', Tony B breaking Tony's balls are some other good recurring bits

disliked the use of malopropism, just seemed like a lazy class signifier that tended to disrupt the otherwise deeply immersive dialogue. they really overdid them with Little Carmine imo

I've also only watched it through once, periodically fall into obsessive clip watching spirals on YouTube though which keeps me satiated ... there's a couple of channels that have decent themed compilations, kind of an interesting way to revisit the show in that watching certain parts presented in a new sequence outside of the original narrative structure can help elucidate otherwise missed or misunderstood plot points, character connections, etc

One interesting aside in the first episode that I don't remember ever being focused on again was Tony mentioning he had three semesters in college (or community college, idr). He would almost assuredly be the only one from the crew with even that much school. There are many further examples of Chase setting Tony apart from the rest of the characters - the therapy, his watching the history channel, his occasional and brief struggles with conscience as opposed to the more straight up sociopathic foils each season. These all feel very manipulative to me because it leads you to separate Tony from the rest when he should not be.

I would like to say the malapropisms, in the case of Tony, are Chase's way of reminding us that even this guy, even the leader, is a total moron. I don't know though.

Hannibal Lecture (PBKR), Monday, 4 October 2021 11:07 (four years ago)

Tony does mention college when in sessions with Dr Melfi IIRC, he brings it up if he feels like his intelligence is being questioned

Critique of the Goth Programme (Neil S), Monday, 4 October 2021 11:12 (four years ago)

Yeah, Melfi is who Tony mentions it to in the first episode.

I can't forget that discussion on one of the Soprano's threads about which characters would have been a Trump voter and the answer is all of them (with the possible exception of Meadow and Melfi, but idk).

Another update, Paulie in the third episode: "Hassidim, but I can't believe 'em."

Hannibal Lecture (PBKR), Monday, 4 October 2021 11:21 (four years ago)

I... didn't hate this? Although I went in with really low expectations, so that helped a little bit it seemed. Basically felt like a just fine extended flashback episode.

My dumb complaint is how fake all the fire looked, like did the budget get blown on using a Stones song so there wasn't much left over for special effects?

Also, I didn't think the thing at the coffin at the end was THAT dumb, given some of the other winking meta dream sequences and stuff from the series.

There are plenty of valid criticisms of this movie but I keep seeing this one pop up and I gotta say, I don't get it. Afaik, this was never marketed as something meant to stand on its own and has pretty clearly always been meant as an extension of the series. watching Funhouse episode, they turn a tender moment with Carmela comforting a depressed Tony following an existential nightmare with him running to the toilet violently farting.

and then the heartbreaking "not in the face".

Gardyloominati (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 5 October 2021 01:40 (four years ago)

No real spoilers, but if you want to go in cold, skip this.

Good idea, as always, to forgot the series, beyond knowing who is who. The tone, humour, etc.--can't capture that.

Not terrible, though. Performances I liked: 1) Having said that about forgetting the series, Vera Farmiga gets Livia exactly right. A couple of line readings were uncanny; 2) Alessandro Nivola (Dickie) and Leslie Odom Jr. (Harold) were both good; 3) Michela De Rossi had to be exceedingly beautiful, and she was. Also, Ray Liotta #2 was pretty good, making up for Ray Liotta #1.

I was so preoccupied with trying to figure out where I knew Michael Gandolfini from (not even thinking about his father, because I had forgotten all about that)--it's The Deuce, which I just finished--that got in the way for me. But at times, I could see Tony. Again, I had forgotten who I was watching.

The soundtrack is mostly random and not particularly effective. "Astral Weeks" worked well. (I'll also mention the last/end-credits song. Probably obvious for most people, caught me by surprise. It's a song I've always disliked, but I thought it actually worked here.)

Best "Of course!" moment: Carmela. (Speaking of which, who is the guy Tony pummels in that scene, beside the phone booth? Was that teenage Richie? Teenage Tony Blundetto? I didn't catch a name.)

I couldn't take Corey Stoll seriously, even though he looked like Junior. He's House of Cards for me. I thought whoever played Silvio gave far and away the most affectatious performance. Not bizarre and funny affectatious, though, like Steve Van Zandt. Just affectatious.

The guy with Carmela and Tony was Jacky Aprile. But the only reason I even know this is thanks to Rolling Stone's (bizarrely detailled and obsessive) recap. I have no idea how they worked it out (maybe just from credits?)

Lots of smart touches, constantly compelling (if somewhat repetitive) storylines. what i'm consistently most impressed by is the sharp plotting and the acting from everybody but especially gandolfini and falco. they are so fucking good it's ridiculous.

a major downside of watching 32 hours of the sopranos over five days is that i've got the tetris effect going on where i end up saying "why ya bustin my balls heah?" to my mother.

i got a neck procedure done today at my pain doctor and they put me out then apparently escorted me out to a group recovery room and when i came to, there was a huge italian-looking guy sitting in the chair across from me moaning and writhing in a chair that was far too small for him and i had a weird confused moment of thinking I fell asleep watching the show and this was a melfi/tony scene that i had fallen into

Chris L, Monday, 11 October 2021 16:28 (four years ago)

Maybe obvious, but the absolute funniest moment in all of Sopranos to me is Chrissy's monologue at Livia's wake, esp with his stoned affect

They say there's no two people on Earth exactly the same. No two faces. No two sets of fingerprints. But do they know that for sure? Because they would have to get everybody together in one huge space and obviously that’s not possible, even with computers. And not only that, they’d have to get all the people who've ever lived, not just the ones now. So they got no proof. They got nothing. Mrs. Soprano may have passed but who’s to say there isn’t another Mrs. Soprano just like her, or will be? Maybe not with the same fears and paranoia but the same.

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Monday, 11 October 2021 16:40 (four years ago)

FWIW in the Chapo ep on Many Saints of Newark, one of them (I think Felix?) had a good read on all the stupidity and malpropisms that it isn't just fun at the expense of the characters but shows how removed these guys are from normal society. But I also think it serves a function of demystifying the mafia, which is something the show tries to do a lot -- i.e. these are not brilliant supercriminals, they're hacks. "More of a glorified crew" if you will, except of course even the New York gang isn't too bright, just sharper by comparison.

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Monday, 11 October 2021 16:45 (four years ago)

they're often good tacticians (on the show at least) but they often don't know how the rest of the world works and they appear so fish out of water.

like Tony Soprano getting angry af about being charged a co-pay despite cancelling the session

Gardyloominati (Neanderthal), Monday, 11 October 2021 16:48 (four years ago)

right, I think the show sees them largely as instinctual beings -- often with strong instincts -- but without much understanding of things beyond "their thing."

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Monday, 11 October 2021 16:56 (four years ago)

all the stupidity and malpropisms that it isn't just fun at the expense of the characters

I don't think it's ever been about fun. The stupidity is just an example of how their venality corrupts them and everyone around them.

In other words, this is America, we're dumb as rocks and twice as evil/greedy, and if you aren't careful, we will drag you down to our level.

... (Eazy), Tuesday, 12 October 2021 06:13 (four years ago)

I don't think it's necessarily true that Tony is stupid- in some ways he's the sharpest character in the whole show. He's a good businessman (even those his business is rent-seeking and extortion backed up by violence), he's an effective politician, and to some extent he understands "how things work" and how he has come to be what he is- from one perspective the whole show is about him trying to better understand himself and break free from the life, though obviously he never fully achieves that. As for the other main characters, his crew are arguably dumb but know how to play the game even if some of them (all of them?) ultimately lose. And the women characters, including Livia, by and large have better self-knowledge than any of the men, even if they too make bad decisions and are both victims of circumstance and active participants in The Family.

Critique of the Goth Programme (Neil S), Tuesday, 12 October 2021 08:34 (four years ago)

but yeah I take the point that another theme is the general coarsening and degradation of American life under late capitalism, and that the characters are products of those processes

Just got to S2 when Christopher gets shot and tells Paulie and Tony about his vision of hell. I'm trying to remember if there are any other moments like Paulie and the psychic where the supernatural is presented as real?

Also, did not remember how much redemption was an early theme of the show early on. So many characters are given a chance to renounce the life and get out (Tony, Carmella, Pussy, Chris, Adriana) and none of them take the opportunity and all of them move forward with (at least on some level) eyes open that they've chosen this life. It's pretty fucking rough and existential when you know how this shit goes for everyone.

On S3 of another rewatch. I posted on FB last year how stunned I was--stunned that I missed it--when I discovered Uncle Junior was Johnny Ola in The Godfather II. A couple of lesser connections this time: Chuck Low (Morrie in Goodfellas) in S1 as the Hasidic Rabbi with the son-in-law problem, and, across different seasons, Richard Romanus (Michael in Mean Streets, Johnny Boy's nemesis) as Dr. Melfi's husband. When I saw "Richard Romanus" in the credits, I suddenly thought "Fast Times!"--Damon, the ticket-scalper--and I could see the resemblance, even if the age didn't quite make sense, but that's Robert Romanus. Holy cow, the timing...just started S5 in this current rewatch, and also, about six hours ago, when it arrived in the mail--before learning of this--The Sopranos Sessions.

(I loved Seitz's Mad Men book.)

In the first few pages, there's a footnote on Sirico's real-life criminal background. Still my favourite Paulie line (to Furio): "Hey, chef of the future."

A few days ago, during the Feech/lawn-care subplot, I was thinking about who I'd consider the scariest and most vicious character. Narrowed down to five, I'd go with Tony, Richie Aprile, Feech, Phil Leotardo, and Paulie.

Not that the Christopher Columbus episode isn't so-so, but I think "The Test Dream" from S5--the Annette Bening episode, if you will--is worse. Scripting a weird dream is fish-in-a-barrel, and this one throws in anything and everything. Short dream sequences in earlier episodes were fine, and I like the upcoming dream episode when Tony's on his deathbed, but "The Test Dream" feels like a generic Lynch imitation. I do like the non-dream conversation with Carmela that ends the episode.

clemenza, Sunday, 10 July 2022 02:40 (three years ago)

i feel like this show fails most when it tries to overexplicate subconscious motivations for everything in a kind of pedantic way. some of the therapy scenes suffer with this too esp in earlier seasons

(there's a way to read this show in which it's deconstructing its own conventions and provisional narratives as it winds down although a lot of that might just be chase being a contrarian dick about fan expectations)

idk if this is a hot take but AJ is the funniest fucking character in the whole thing. such a specific type of millennial shithead and they realised him so well that everyone hates him more than the actual murderers in the show but almost everything he does or says is gold. i don't think he even registered as comedy to me before bc i was his age watching it but he rules and his all over the place politics in the last episode is so real and perfect and 2007

Left, Sunday, 10 July 2022 03:43 (three years ago)

Yeah, it refreshes the show when Tony dumps his therapy sessions with Malfi. The concept was exhausted. But they bring it back iirc? Love the early seasons but not the last one really.

assert (matttkkkk), Sunday, 10 July 2022 04:24 (three years ago)

Would have been kind of brilliant to end S5 five minutes earlier than they did, with Tony and Carmela lying in bed trying to get their heads around what an "event planner" does.

"I agree with that Senator Sanitorium, who says if we let this stuff go too far, pretty soon we'll be fսck¡ng dogs."

Nice reminder that Senator Sanitorium, 15 years later, was brought onto CNN as basically the moderate face of the Republican party...

Vito's subplot in S6 was such a great idea. He reminds me, in a way, of Doug Stamper in House of Cards (his obsession with Rachel), or more than one of the supporting Russian agents in The Americans, especially Dylan Baker--these characters who are out there at the edge of the main story, haunted and on the run. The shot of him walking down the road at night after his car breaks down is beautiful. (Something about the way he walks is especially sad.) I've still got most of S6 to go--I forgot the specifics of what happens to him in the end, but I know it's not good.

clemenza, Tuesday, 12 July 2022 16:09 (three years ago)

it's fascinating how the homophobia manifests differently among the characters as they're trying to figure out what the correct line is. despite all their posturing they still want maintain these exceptions- it's not necessarily gay to fuck a guy in prison, and penetrating is almost nbd compared to being penetrated - penetration as projection of hetero male power (including between men) is basically how the whole thing is wrapped up. and to give head to anyone is to be penetrated- it's almsot like an imperial roman or fascist sexual politics they have (of course none of them really follow it and paulie might well have fucked some guys in prison)

they all know that being gay is incompatible with being a mafioso even as they're also forced to acknowledge that gay mobsters exist and always have done (a lot of the fan reaction of the time was not dissimilar- just the idea of this fat gay mobster finding love for a while, something that actually happens irl- was derided as totally unrealistic (the actual supernatural shit in a few episodes never inspired the same incredulity)

still not sure how i feel about the storyline as a whole - i'm glad they did it and it does have a strangely different tone to it which sets it apart from pretty much the entire series in a cool way. the leather daddy thing- i'm kind of glad it's there since the gay respectability politics of the time was so opposed to representation of kinky or overly "stereotypical" gay culture, which made for some boring gay representation for a while. otoh it totally feels like something a bunch of straight boomers pitching gay things for vito to do would come up with because they think the village people are hilarious

Left, Tuesday, 12 July 2022 19:46 (three years ago)

The scene inside the gay club was pretty corny shock-value; what I really liked were the shots of Vito walking around this small New Hampshire town, popping into the antique shop, watching the firemen at work (which obviously had a secondary purpose), trying to imagine a new way of life.

Not sure how credible it is that Meadow and Finn--who are supposed to be conscientious, and left-leaning, albeit in a 2006 context--sell Vito out so readily. Surely they realize what will happen to him. (And Finn had remained silent thus far.)

Funny as all get-out, but I'm really noticing this time just how vicious and awful he can be. Thinking in particular of the beating he gives to the son who inherits his father's business (demanding that he kick $4,000 a month up to him--and something of a shock, coming right after he's brought to tears by something that relates to his mother/aunt revelation), and two or three other times in S5 and S6 where he comes across as the worst guy in the whole crew.

And he's also the focus of one of the show's most touching scenes, after he learns he has cancer and silently walks into his mother (aunt's) apartment and asks what she's watching on TV.

Perhaps mentioned in a different thread, but not in this one (from a footnote in The Sopranos Sessions, referring to the scene where A.J. and his friends vandalize the pool):

"Look closely in the pool scene and you'll spot a young Lady Gaga, then a fifteen-year-old actress billed as Stefani Germanotta."

Pretty common knowledge, I guess, but new to me.

https://www.stereogum.com/2169409/lady-gaga-the-sopranos-cameo-telltale-moozadell/news/

I finished the final episode over the weekend. Also noticed--not until the credits--that Donna Pescow played Patsy's wife in the finale (she was Annette in Saturday Night Fever, who was raped and just treated like dirt by Travolta and his friends). I'm guessing the casting was intentional: I don't think Saturday Night Fever was ever specifically mentioned in the show, but along with Scorsese and Sinatra and all the rest, I'm sure it resided somewhere in the psychological headspace of Tony and the rest.

Loved Tony's peyote trip in Las Vegas.

three weeks pass...

Went to a rep screening of Saturday Night Fever last night, started reading up on Karen Lynn Gorney. (The more times I see SNF, the more I think she's just as remarkable as Travolta. The scene where he presses her on the guy she was living with and she breaks down crying is beautifully acted.) Such a strange career...After SNF (she'd already been a soap star), she did not make another film until 1991. Nor did she return to TV. Nada. She's acted pretty steadily this century, including one appearance in The Sopranos as Judy that I missed. This supports my idea above that there's a link between the two, as does (never really took notice of it before) the use of "stugots" in SNF.
