hrm, after i posted that (about the 30th), i got an e-mail entreating me to go to a work-related thing that won't let out until prolly 8:30. dec 2nd is still looking like the best option.

Also, under 21s can drink. I was there till 2:45 am this week and my tab was $3 because I am a regular.

'you' vs. 'city hall' FITE (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 24 November 2005 05:44 (twenty years ago)

ok, so i'm liking the idea of drinking midweek and i generally think it's funner to get people together on a boring weeknight than waste their valuable weekend time.

if any underage drunks are free next wednesday night (the 7th), can you recommend a bar that doesn't card? in an easy-to-get-to part of brooklyn, maybe on the F train? i like boat on smith street but i forget if they card.

like a circle in a spiral, like a wheel within a wheel (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 15:43 (twenty years ago)

I don't remember Boat carding anyone last time I was there, but a lot of these places are completely intermittent with their carding skillz so I don't want to be held accountable for my last experience.

Allyzay must fight Zolton herself. (allyzay), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 16:31 (twenty years ago)

shit
carding or lack thereof is going to make or break a dec7 FAP for me

nervous (cochere), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 16:34 (twenty years ago)

I've got a work Christmas do on Wednesday but I could pop in after that so I'd be on the later side (9-10pm). Yay Brooklyn booze-up. Can't help about the carding, soz.

jon makes this sound like fucking paradise on earth for me but i am slightly scared of him

nervous (cochere), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 16:39 (twenty years ago)

I'd go to O'Connors -- it's not far from the 7th Ave B/Q or that 1/9 stop on Flatbush (don't remember the name, though). Plus it's closer to me than JBR's neighborhood.

Can't booze on Mondays, though, or I'd try the LES smoke-fest.

but yeah, i'd probably be taking the PATH in

Right, I understand NJT. Well, the 2/3 DOES go to Chambers St, so you can walk over from the WTC Path train easily from there and catch the 2/3 to Bergen St. (not far from the bar in question). Works out all right, all things considered. Have to keep an eye on the clock, that's all.

i usually take the bus (the 61, right? i forget) from downtown brooklyn -> wburg, and it's smooth sailing. the subway is a nightmare however. cabs, god love 'em.

'you' vs. 'radio gnome invisible 3' FITE (ex machina), Thursday, 1 December 2005 16:15 (twenty years ago)

there's a sushi place on the lower east side, can't remember the name, they do 2-for-1 rolls all the time, and they have a big karaoke room in the back with flashing lights, etc that they let you book for free as long as you spend at least $200 .. i'll try to remember the name of it

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 1 December 2005 16:19 (twenty years ago)

Ehhhhh....

'you' vs. 'radio gnome invisible 3' FITE (ex machina), Thursday, 1 December 2005 16:32 (twenty years ago)

my recommendation is to find a place in koreatown and smuggle in your own booze.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 1 December 2005 16:34 (twenty years ago)

the place we always used is mbc (or mdc) studios. it usually ended up being about $12 per person per hour for a room.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 1 December 2005 16:35 (twenty years ago)

I went to a surprising place in Chinatown (WInnie's??) where the hostess would accompnay you on request, which was kind of charming, but they had a two-drink minimum and were military about enforcing it. And there weren't private rooms.

Otherwise Village Karaoke is easy, or Planet Rose on 13th and A is all right but again, yer doing your warbling in public. I'm SURE there are swank joints in K-town as Stence suggested -- and there must be two dozen places to choose from, the signs are right on the sidewalk! Some also have individual rooms set up for Pump, the Korean DDR variant, which is never NOT fun.

Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 1 December 2005 16:47 (twenty years ago)

i've had lots of fun at winnie's over the years but in addition to the kind of weak and pricey drinks, you have to pay at least a dollar per song (which you give when you hand in your request) and accusations of the hostess favoring certain customers are always rife. one of my friends, now a singer for a reasonably well-known band, was asked to leave one night after making a huge fuss when "whip it" never came up in the rota.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 1 December 2005 17:01 (twenty years ago)

some places may be crowded on saturday. i know there is one or 2 places in w'burg but i think they have karaoke on weeknights. village karaoke is prolly the way to go on saturday so you don't have to listen to serious karaoke'ers. there is a place called orange valve down the street from village karaoke that has karaoke in the basement/rumpus room and a 2 drink minimum. we had a fap there once and it was pretty good.

i do not like to drive and then drink and then drive. HSTENCIL.

i'm really looking forward to wednesday! you guys better show up!

The Great Pagoda of Funn (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 3 December 2005 19:50 (twenty years ago)

I will be there. I might bring friends. (To watch my back.)

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Saturday, 3 December 2005 19:51 (twenty years ago)

(I have two friends who live in the 'hood and both give O'Connors good marks.)

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Saturday, 3 December 2005 19:53 (twenty years ago)

O-Connor's is awesome. Except for the time I went with bnw and the bartender was mean to us and the people next to us at the bar were too.

Mary (Mary), Saturday, 3 December 2005 19:54 (twenty years ago)

morbius can beat them up.

The Great Pagoda of Funn (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 3 December 2005 19:56 (twenty years ago)

Yes, and I think lauren has been away too long -- it's a 5-10 min. walk from like every subway line ever aside from the F.

Mary if you're talking about the rockabilly guy with the horn-rimmed glasses, he got fired.

'Deadly Snakes'?

the bellefox, Monday, 5 December 2005 12:59 (twenty years ago)

I nearly came to NYC this week, I would have flown out today in fact. But it was a work trip and sadly got cancelled. One day ... one day.

Anna (Anna), Monday, 5 December 2005 13:01 (twenty years ago)

West Side Story? I was hoping for some hardboiled, Maltese Falcon, Humphrey Bogart on Elisha Cook Jr. action.

There could be Jerome Robbins-inspired balletic moves.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 5 December 2005 14:21 (twenty years ago)

will try to be there.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 04:25 (twenty years ago)

O'Connor's is ok except for the time when i popped in there with britishes gf before a bam movie back in september and got in an argument with some dude about hurricane katrina and whatnot. anyway, i don't think i can make it tomorrow pm, unless there's a last-minute change of venue to either sylvia's in harlem, or daddy's. : (

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 04:45 (twenty years ago)

not that i really want to elaborate but i felt like the dude i was arguing with really needed to know that it wasn't just black people who were rescued from the 9th ward, et al.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 04:50 (twenty years ago)

i thought they weren't rescuing pets.

there should be some sorta sign to this effect when folks enter greenpoint ...

polish people aren't white?

mies van der rohffle (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 06:24 (twenty years ago)

no, they're "ethnic"

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 06:27 (twenty years ago)

that's the point ... "exotic" white people (poles in greenpoint, hasidim in williamsburg, ukrainians in the east village) aren't there to please newcomers to the neighborhoods!

I wonder what a bam movie is.

I dare say the fap will be very good!

i have last-minute conflict. one of my oldest nyc friends is having a bday party tonight, and since i'm going to the mercury lounge early on i'm not going to be able to make it to o'connors. will someone kiss the jukebox for me?

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 17:11 (twenty years ago)

Mary, horn-rim guy was a jerk. He really was. He was responsible for the re-cooling of O'Connor's -- he got the jukebox in, brought his friends, invited a few musical acts -- but he apparently felt that gave him license to yell at people for whatever reason he wanted. I don't know who else you could be talking about, Bart is really nice, although there have probably been others brought in who I don't know.

wow, lauren, that sucks!

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 17:31 (twenty years ago)

Hstencil: yes, I think you did need to spell that thing out, for me at least: what you referred to, in your link, is very obscure where I come from. I mean, no-one has ever heard of it. Of course, you could say that the whole thing is nothing to do with me anyway so I don't need or deserve to have it explained.

All the same, that is odd - 'bam'?

I still think the NYC frenzy for Deadly Snakes is curious. They are another thing that nobody has heard of here, I suppose.

I still think, also, that the fap will be good. Tracer Hand will be present!

the bellefox, Wednesday, 7 December 2005 18:43 (twenty years ago)

BAM = Brooklyn Academy of Music. seems logical enough to me.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 18:46 (twenty years ago)

PS, other people are good too, not just Hand. He was just one example.

the bellefox, Wednesday, 7 December 2005 18:48 (twenty years ago)

Eisbar: that does sound logical, but going to a movie at such a place sounds odd.

the bellefox, Wednesday, 7 December 2005 18:48 (twenty years ago)

I must insist, pinefox, that this drumbeat of affection... continue!

My friend Claire, a redhead from Glasgow, visited Brooklyn recently and laughed when she saw the big sign for the Brooklyn Academy of Music. "Bam?? like a wee daftee ned?"

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 18:49 (twenty years ago)

WAM, BAM, thank you, pinefox!

Kon-Tiki Reign (Ken L), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 18:54 (twenty years ago)

The cinema is a relatively new addition, pf. BAM has been home to world-class music and dance performances since the American civil war. Caruso sang there.

Haha, Ken. I know nothing about Hoyt/Sch station but I suspect you are right! The times I have mistakenly gotten off there (due to construction or etc) it has seemed like the middle of nowhere.

GET EQUIPPED WITH BUBBLE LEAD (ex machina), Thursday, 8 December 2005 14:52 (twenty years ago)

JOHN LILLY ran dolphin research facilities in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, and Coral Gables, Florida. In the years after Green Bank, Morbius often visited on winter vacations. This allowed him to combine his love of snorkeling with his continuing interest in Lilly's attempts to communicate with these "alien" intelligences.

Marine mammals were a pop-culture phenomenon. There was a TV show, Flipper, about a dolphin as anthropomorphic as those in Lilly's tales -- though a good deal less overtly sexual. Lilly advised Flipper's producer, Ivan Tors, and two of Lilly's dolphins appeared in a movie version of Flipper. Lilly's books on dolphins became best-sellers. His example must have been on Morbius's mind as he forged his own writing career.

In winter 1963 Morbius met "Elvar." Elvar with the voluntary erections. Lilly took Morbius into a room with a large tank of sea water. Elvar poked his head above the water.

"Morbius, this is Elvar," Lilly announced. "Elvar, this is Morbius."

Elvar expertly smacked his head against the water surface. A neat spray of water nailed Morbius in the forehead.

Lilly left Morbius and Elvar alone. The dolphin lolled in the water like a happy dog. Soon Morbius was scratching his belly. The dolphin would periodically dive, swim to the opposite end of the tank, and return for more scratching. Morbius tired of this before the dolphin did. Elvar reared up out of the water, balancing a moment on tail flukes and emitted a single word: "More!"

At least, it sounded like "more." It was a high-pitched monosyllabic squeak.

Morbius went and found Lilly attending some electronic equipment. He informed him, excitedly, that Elvar had said "more."

"Was it in context?" Lilly wanted to know.

"Yes, it was in context."

"Good," Lilly said. "That's one of the words he knows."

* * *

Lilly believed his dolphins could speak English -- not well, of course, and their vocabulary was limited. Morbius was not so sure. He was fascinated by all he saw in Lilly's finny kingdom. But it was never clear what was "real" and what was anthropomorphizing. Lilly sometimes seemed unmotivated to make these distinctions.

Lilly would talk about the great experiments he was going to do. Then another year would go by, Morbius would see him the next winter, and it would turn out that the actual, controlled experiment had still not been done. Lilly would spin another colorful tale. They had been trying out the concept when the dolphin did the damndest thing . . . One year, some of the captive dolphins committed suicide -- or such was Lilly's understanding. Lilly gallantly set the surviving dolphins free. These anecdotes were what made Lilly's books on the dolphin so engaging. But "the really critical scientific tests were somehow never performed," Morbius complained.

Morbius tried to nudge Lilly along. He outlined specific experiments and controls that would actually prove something. It had not even been established that dolphins can communicate arbitrary information to other dolphins. Until then, everything else Lilly did would rest on shaky ground.

Morbius suggested a Bach vs. Beatles experiment. They would teach a dolphin to distinguish between the music of Bach and the Beatles (dolphins have excellent hearing). The dolphin would be rewarded with tasty fish every time it tapped a fish dispenser that was playing Beatles music underwater (say) but never when it tapped an identical dispenser playing Bach.

Then they would introduce a new dolphin that knows nothing about music and how the fish dispensers work. A barrier would now prevent the "educated" dolphin from tapping the fish dispensers. Only the uneducated dolphin would be free to do that. Every time the uneducated dolphin hit the "right" dispenser, both dolphins would get food.

The educated dolphin would then have an incentive to "instruct" the new dolphin on the way to get food. If dolphins communicate, that would be demonstrable (in many tests, with many pairs of dolphins) by the greater slopes of the learning curves.

* * *

Lilly never performed this experiment. He suspected that if dolphins were to learn human speech, it would have to be through "total immersion," through being isolated from other dolphins and living with a human, hearing only human speech.

This naturally entailed "total immersion" for the human, too. Lilly envisioned a flooded house. It would be a home with the comforts of middle-class suburbia, only there would be water in it. Dolphins would glide freely among the human occupants' legs. In such a house dolphins might learn human language. It could even, Lilly speculated, be the foundation of a future utopia in which humans and dolphins would co-exist as equal partners.

A frustrated romance of Morbius's played a small role in Lilly's most famous dolphin study. One night in St. Thomas, Morbius dined at a remote mountaintop restaurant. The hostess caught his eye. She was an attractive young woman with dark hair and a healthy, tomboyish quality. Her name was Margaret Howe. She told Morbius that she was bored. Her job as a hostess was evenings only. She wanted something else to occupy her on the island.

Morbius tried to get Howe into bed. Howe rebuffed him, but the meeting had one result: Morbius introduced Howe to anthropologist Gregory Bateson, who was then running the St. Thomas facility. This led to a job and plunged Howe into one of the most unusual experiments of the 1960s.

In the summer of 1965, Howe lived in the company of "Peter," a male dolphin, 24 hours a day, six days a week in a simplified flooded house. There are surreal photographs of Howe working efficiently at a desk or chatting on the telephone, eyed curiously by a dolphin as her whole environment is sopping in 24 inches of water.

"A dolphin is more like a shadow than a roommate," Howe said. The thing would stay by her all day and never leave. She could talk on the phone for hours. The dolphin wouldn't get bored. It wouldn't leave. As weeks passed, Howe was subject to depression and crying jags. "I have found that during the day I will find any excuse to get out of the flooded room," she wrote in her diary. (Lilly meanwhile was contemplating a flooded car for the future bi-species society.)

Peter began exhibiting courting behavior. He lightly nibbled Howe's legs, getting erections, and rubbing against her ardently. As a matter of expediency, Howe took to giving the dolphin hand jobs. Peter would "reach some sort of orgasm, mouth open, eyes closed, body shaking, then his penis would relax and withdraw." Dolphin libidos being what they are, this had to be repeated two or three times; then, finally, the dolphin could concentrate on its lessons.

That made for a pretty good conversation stopper. Otherwise the experiment's results were debatable. It seemed that Peter learned to say "hello" and "ball" and parrot consonant sounds. When Howe asked Peter to get the ball, he would often get the cloth.

* * *

After this experiment, Morbius visited St. Thomas and played a game of catch with Peter. Morbius threw the ball to Peter, and Peter dove under it and batted it back with his snout. His aim was as accurate as a human's. Then, after a few volleys, the dolphin began returning the ball far to the side of Morbius. Peter was toying with Morbius, performing an "experiment" of his own. Figuring that two can play that game, Morbius retrieved the ball one last time and held it, treading water.

For about a minute, both mammals stood their ground. Peter gave in. He swam into Morbius's side of the tank, circling him, repeatedly brushing past him. This puzzled Morbius. It didn't seem like the dolphin's tail flukes had brushed him. Then he realized the dolphin had a hard-on.

The frustrated triangle of Morbius, Howe, and Peter was worthy of Sartre. There was a further twist. Peter was one of Lilly's ex-actor dolphins. Morbius had been propositioned by Flipper.

I will.

I sat between Jon and Morbius for a long time without incurring any damage. Sterling Clover thought I was Ken C.

I always thought Dr. Morbius was named after the guy in Forbidden Planet.

Were Laurel and Laura even there at the same time last night? I can't remember.

So, uh, I guess Laurel wants me to tell you guys that I'm going to be in town next Friday to play a show at Rothko. You're of course welcome to come to the show itself (the Damnwells headline), but I might also just try to arrange drinks around there afterwards.

(We go on around 8 and will probably play for around 45 minutes, so the rest of the evening is more or less free -- except I'd like to stay in the area because all my equipment will probably still be in the club until the show's over.)

doods can we name something convenient then since none of it is technically convenient for me so I have no suggestions? i know where daddy's is and i like it=i'm gon say yes to it. i think lauren's suggestion sounds ok but mars bars is kinda lame so that kind of put me off for 10 seconds. 8pm or 9pm is ok by me too, i should be done with my shit by then.

Allyzay must fight Zolton herself. (allyzay), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 19:35 (twenty years ago)

sorry to be a beyotch but I'm coordinating with some non-ILXors too who are notorious for flaking if I last-minute my plans with them. I am thinking of a place downtown that was ok vis a vis talking-ability and pricing-range but can't remember A) the streets B) what it's called so I'm pretty fucking useless at this game.

Allyzay must fight Zolton herself. (allyzay), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 19:37 (twenty years ago)

uh-oh. i'm in trouble if vasmay happens to suck that night, aren't i?

xpost - let me clarify the mars bar lite thing. i meant that in a good way, like a friendly neighborhood hard-drinking bar with sassy girl bartenders and a few patrons perpetually asleep in the corner. however, it smells better (usually) and i've never seen a skinhead riot there and they don't let the druggy crustpunks in and you will get in trouble if more than one person goes into the bathroom at a time.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 19:39 (twenty years ago)

I'd like go with Lauren's suggestion because she is a treat and the location is good.

GET EQUIPPED WITH BUBBLE LEAD (ex machina), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 19:40 (twenty years ago)

i just wish i could be there.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 19:40 (twenty years ago)

no skinhead riots?!?!?! oh then I'm out, etc.

xpost vasmay it is then.

Allyzay must fight Zolton herself. (allyzay), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 19:42 (twenty years ago)

one more thing about vasmay: there isn't much table seating. there are a lot of seats around the bar, the perimeter windows, and the pool table, but you can't sit around a big table facing each other. i've gone there several times with large groups and this has never been a problem, but it depends on how you want to interact I suppose.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 19:42 (twenty years ago)

they don't let the druggy crustpunks in

but but but... how will i get in??

Allyzay must fight Zolton herself. (allyzay), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 19:50 (twenty years ago)

I think breaking into small, sodden groups is better for convo anyway, Lauren. Staring at each other across a big table leads to only talking to your immediate neighbor, and what if your neighbor is ME?! Perish the thought.

Laurel (Laurel), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 19:50 (twenty years ago)

We should invade the bar of that chinese restaurant... Although those are well lit so Tom and I will look bad :(

they also have another sister bar called, er, the magician

The Magician is a no no, I refuse to set foot in there ever again on a weekend.

Don't have any problem whatsoever with WXOU and have always liked it fairly well with the exception of possible smallness? ie if it gets v. crowded that could be bad.

Don't mind Daddy's as a place but have similar transport concerns to Laurel's.

Never been to Vasmay but I see no problem with it.

N Train is accessible to all and convenient to transportation and I have no arguments against it.

Ian, come over to my house tonight and we will deangrify you. I don't know if I'll be going out drinking because I have NETFLIX to watch. Next time though!

Laura H. (laurah), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 16:11 (twenty years ago)

My drinking options for tonight were Stephin Merritt's shortguy night on 14th St or the Park Slope gayman OINK fest at the lesbian bar ... tho I see there's trivia at Magnetic Field I'm undoubtedly too old for:

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 17:08 (twenty years ago)

Oh well. Lauren, you have my phone no., would be groovy to see you again before Sat. Call if you get up to anything!

Laurel (Laurel), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 17:20 (twenty years ago)

hi, people. i have a cold! i'm afraid that tonight is out for me. but there's tomorrow and friday...

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 18:23 (twenty years ago)

hey lauren. im sure some soon dooboo would make you feel better. though it might give you gas. it always does for me. anyhow, friday is cat's new weekly party at some new place on eldridge street. want to go to that?

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 18:33 (twenty years ago)

daddy's tomorrow? i no work so let's drink.

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 18:45 (twenty years ago)

also at cat's party: holy hail, featuring cutty (and cat). everyone should go!

if i'm feeling okay tomorrow night, i think i might go to orchard bar. also, my friend's thing is at southside lounge - psychedelic perversions. ideally, i'd go to both but i have to see how i feel.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 21:50 (twenty years ago)

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 21:52 (twenty years ago)

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 21:57 (twenty years ago)

Hey, I stopped by ESCB last night, Phil, without seeing this. Were you in the back? What is the new Eldridge place?

Paul Eater (eater), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 22:59 (twenty years ago)

oh! i was sort of all over the place. it was super crowded. wish i had seen you. what time were you there?

i think the place is called Fontanas, between broome and grand. i havent been, but cat said its like three floors, really spacious, and has room for bands. sounds good

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 23:07 (twenty years ago)

I was probably there around 11:30. I stayed pretty close to the door.

Oh, I've been to Fontana's too but I didn't know what it was called. Nice space! These reviews are hilarious.

Paul Eater (eater), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 23:18 (twenty years ago)

Haha. Marah Ramirez says, "Not that I'm an expert on Andy Warhol or his art, but Fontana’s has a Warholian feel to it. In no other bar/lounge can a still black-and-white movie be playing and not be considered outlandish. ".

I was there at 11:30 too. Oh well. Next time. What drink did you have?

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 23:23 (twenty years ago)

Marah Ramirez, 22, Flushing

Not that I'm an expert on Andy Warhol or his art, but Fontana’s has a Warholian feel to it. In no other bar/lounge can a still black-and-white movie be playing and not be considered outlandish. At Fontana’s, however, the movie goes with the electrifying blue and fuchsia walls, the Marilyn Monroe-type photographs, the crystal chandelier, the high ceilings and even the pool table in the back. What’s best is that the bartenders are super friendly—from patiently giving driving directions over the phone to happily exchanging a bitter Boddington for a Corona.

Grade: A

aww, poor little girl got bitter beer face! (haha xpost)

miss michael learned (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 23:25 (twenty years ago)

i guess pool tables are warholian, maybe if they're in a joe dallessandro movie...

miss michael learned (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 23:27 (twenty years ago)

"If you like rock/alternative music mixed with an artsy/modern-day hippie-type crowd, this place is for you. Grade: C-"

Paul Eater (eater), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 23:28 (twenty years ago)

i had the moscow mules. they were the drink special. "only" $6. they were tasty and boy howdy did i get drunk

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 23:29 (twenty years ago)

let's totally go to the southside lounge tomorrow night!

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 23:45 (twenty years ago)

phil, what's a moscow mule?

miss michael learned (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 23:48 (twenty years ago)

i think its vodka, fresh squeezed lime juice, and ginger beer.

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 23:50 (twenty years ago)

that sounds AWESOME.

miss michael learned (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 23:51 (twenty years ago)

that, they were. very refreshing.

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 5 January 2006 00:01 (twenty years ago)

Smirnoff sells them in bottles. Long before Smirnoff Ice there were Smirnoff Mules.

Paul Eater (eater), Thursday, 5 January 2006 00:09 (twenty years ago)

Smirnoff Yakov

miss michael learned (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 5 January 2006 00:22 (twenty years ago)

So many 'toppish' bottoms in the world...

(unrelated) Who else likes this Southside hstencil is primed for?

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 5 January 2006 15:39 (twenty years ago)

I've been wanting a Moscow Mule for ages, used it as a work password for a while but never ordered one. I think using crappy mass-marketed ginger ale would just make it nasty so it has to be ordered somewhere that specializes...hooray!

If Stence can convince Lauren to make her appearance at Southside tonight, what the hell, I'll show up.

Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 5 January 2006 15:45 (twenty years ago)

i think i can make it. what time are people showing up?

miss michael learned (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 5 January 2006 16:23 (twenty years ago)

i still feel pretty meh today, so i'm not sure if i'll be coming to southside unfortunately.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 5 January 2006 16:48 (twenty years ago)

Oh fer pete's sake, get thee back to bed and rest up. We've got socializin' to do.

Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 5 January 2006 16:53 (twenty years ago)

i feel like crap too (it's the sort of female trouble i know better than to bring up on ilx), but a drink would probably do me good.

miss michael learned (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 5 January 2006 17:03 (twenty years ago)

i think i'm going to see "match point" instead tonight. maybe tomorrow night?

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 5 January 2006 17:11 (twenty years ago)

MAKE UP YOUR COLLECTIVE MIND, PEOPLE. I am free Thurs OR Fri and the priority is seeing Lauren before she goes away again but if all y'all make it impossibly difficult I will drink wine at home and read a book.

Speaking of books: JBR, I finally have that one to loan you.

Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 5 January 2006 17:25 (twenty years ago)

today, tomorrow, makes no diff to me.

miss michael learned (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 5 January 2006 17:39 (twenty years ago)

the moscow mule is one of the greatest drinks of ever.

(i will be in williamsburg tomorrow night!!)

ts: the moscow mule vs. the dark & stormy

miss michael learned (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 5 January 2006 19:15 (twenty years ago)

I'm leaving town tomorrow. If something firms up for tonight, I might drop by.

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 5 January 2006 19:20 (twenty years ago)

There's a shoegaze party at Belly on Rivington tonight. Don't know much about it but I will probably stop by.

Paul Eater (eater), Thursday, 5 January 2006 19:48 (twenty years ago)

bump

miss michael learned (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 5 January 2006 21:00 (twenty years ago)

My schedule still free after about 7 pm tonight and fuck knows I could use a drink. What's a dark and stormy?

Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 5 January 2006 21:05 (twenty years ago)

ginger beer + dark rum

miss michael learned (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 5 January 2006 21:05 (twenty years ago)

ILX drank wonderful dark & stormies once at Delbar on upper Columbus.

Paul Eater (eater), Thursday, 5 January 2006 21:16 (twenty years ago)

i had dark & stormys with ned at a thai restaurant in park slope!

miss michael learned (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 5 January 2006 21:18 (twenty years ago)

Word from Lauren is that she prefers Friday, in the form of the event mentioned upthread. Anyone still want to hit the bottle this evening? Answers on a 3 x 5 card and I'll check back after yoga.

Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 5 January 2006 22:48 (twenty years ago)

tomorrow would be GREAT for me... tonight i think i'm gonna hide under the covers and watch lifetime movies and eat takeout chinese.

miss michael learned (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 5 January 2006 22:52 (twenty years ago)

A few cute friends are going to Belly so I'll definitely be there; come by!

Paul Eater (eater), Thursday, 5 January 2006 22:58 (twenty years ago)

those running around manhattan on friday night are advised to stop by Happy Endings where I will be DJing downstairs.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 5 January 2006 23:04 (twenty years ago)

i'll come by, dan. for the 6th time in 8 days. oof.

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 5 January 2006 23:12 (twenty years ago)

Ahh, that's what I like about ILX: everyone's so definite! See some of you tomorrow, then -- I'm going home.

miss michael learned (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 6 January 2006 22:55 (twenty years ago)

Nice to see you Lauren! Sorry I was so wasted. That is the burden of not drinking regularly anymore :(

Today my heat is off and I'm sooooo hungover. The zombies at that Chinese place ate my brain.

why not? matmos/so percussion set time is 7.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 19 January 2006 21:29 (twenty years ago)

Not because of Matmos but because of prior plans which will probably have me tied up until at least midnight and probably in some far away part of town. If there's a way I can make EB I'll be there.

TRG (TRG), Thursday, 19 January 2006 21:37 (twenty years ago)

Are Times New Viking before or after EB? They seem like they might be good live.

TRG (TRG), Thursday, 19 January 2006 21:38 (twenty years ago)

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Friday, 20 January 2006 00:01 (twenty years ago)

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 20 January 2006 06:57 (twenty years ago)

8:00 Sublime Frequencies and Arthur Magazine present:
Hisham Mayet
NIGER: MAGIC AND ECSTASY IN THE SAHEL
2005, 70 minutes, Beta SP.
NEW YORK PREMIERE!
The filmmaker Hisham Mayet will be present to introduce the screening and take questions.
A celebration of life in the Sahel region of Africa, this film showcases many of Niger's venerable music styles. Tuareg Electric Guitar trance rock, Bori cult dance ceremonies, Fulani Folk, and Roadhouse Gospel Rave-ups are some of the segments included in this latest "Folk Cinema" classic from Sublime Frequencies! Hisham Mayet delivers a spontaneous, raw, and inspiring collection of images, music, and ceremony from a nation mired in poverty and continual post-colonial disappointment. Quoting from Mayet's liner notes: "This is not music as commodity this is music as survival. There is a saying in Niger that goes, 'when we die we know we are going to heaven because we already live in Hell'. Well, I think it's more like the purgatory that we all live in and they sure have managed to transcend with an incredible natural resource: music. Dig it!"
Also screening: Sublime Frequencies Archive Vol. 4: 30 minutes of the patented ethno/collage medium, as well as never-before-screened previews of future Sublime Frequencies films.

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 17:43 (twenty years ago)

I foolishly left a huge bag of sour patch kids at the girlfriend's. :(

A BOLD QUAHOG (ex machina), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 17:51 (twenty years ago)

Hm, could maybe do. What time?

i should be there some time after 8, but you can show up whenever you like.

How generous of you! ; )

dancing chicken (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 18:03 (twenty years ago)

Laurel, Chinese New Year is OVER

A BOLD QUAHOG (ex machina), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 18:05 (twenty years ago)

What does that have to do with anything? One of my vendors is serving free drinks & Japanese food, I should complain??

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 18:06 (twenty years ago)

no, you should take smuggle sushi in yer purse for me.

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 18:10 (twenty years ago)

A BOLD QUAHOG (ex machina), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 18:25 (twenty years ago)

Laurel, re last night -- you missed the 'fun' of one of our regular dudes getting kicked out upon entry for being a dick to the bartender last Monday! :xxx

A BOLD QUAHOG (ex machina), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 18:26 (twenty years ago)

near lorimer l stop. passed by it today on the way to work. won't be going tomorrow (in celebration of a month free of alcohol) because i am broke and it ain't no joke.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 18:26 (twenty years ago)

just an FYI...pete's has quiz on wednesday, it's usually PACKED ceiling to floor with DORKS.

ddb (ddb), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 18:31 (twenty years ago)

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 18:33 (twenty years ago)

(in celebration of a month free of alcohol)

i thot this said a month of free alcohol.

depending on my babysitting duties, i might be able to come find you guys tomorrow. (unless you hide really well.)

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 19:13 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, maybe Daddy's is better. Quiz bowl nights are their own thing entirely.

Laura H. (laurah), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 19:22 (twenty years ago)

If the weather is nice ( i doubt it) you can always sit outside instead of near the loud ass romper room quiz off. I almost spent every night in Pete's this summer because of their blissful AC.

ShawShank Rambo Connection (Carey), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 19:22 (twenty years ago)

i'm there!

geeta (geeta), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 23:26 (twenty years ago)

Aw jeez, I miss all the fun. On the other hand, I got some serious girl-chat/chain-smoking done last night and then about 10 hours of sleep, which was DEEEE-lishus. See folks tomorrow at Daddy's.

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 23:29 (twenty years ago)

Laurel (Laurel), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 18:48 (twenty years ago)

geeta (geeta), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 19:44 (twenty years ago)

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 19:56 (twenty years ago)

ShawShank Rambo Connection (Carey), Thursday, 2 February 2006 00:34 (twenty years ago)

good thing you got outta that rekkid store, car3y.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 2 February 2006 00:44 (twenty years ago)

Congrats, Carey! Will you have to postpone the cross-country adventure, though? Having to go to work is such a drag, except when it gets me out of family commitments, like it did yesterday and today. No one can argue with: "Gotta go to work."

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 2 February 2006 01:32 (twenty years ago)

i have to postpone the travel but it is ok since i have to travel a lot for work anyway. I liked to work at the rekkid store a lot, there was just one thing that was really annoying.

ShawShank Rambo Connection (Carey), Thursday, 2 February 2006 01:55 (twenty years ago)

congratulations carey flembach

i am not going out tonight, obviouisly.
instead my roommate's crush came over and got me drunk on champagne while we wated for rooomate.

long day at work and another one tomorrow combined with paying rent means no beer for ian.

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Thursday, 2 February 2006 02:17 (twenty years ago)

I HAVE TO GIVE YOU CASSETTES.

i was not even looking for a job, but someone i saw at a party set it up. I may still work at rekkid store every so often.

ShawShank Rambo Connection (Carey), Thursday, 2 February 2006 02:21 (twenty years ago)

NYC will you drink with me, in June?

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 9 February 2006 17:30 (twenty years ago)

oh hell yes! looking forward to seeing you again, tim!

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 9 February 2006 17:44 (twenty years ago)

Not only will I drink with you, Mr Popkins, I will be happy to offer you the use of my very comfy sofa, should you need a crash pad.

Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 9 February 2006 17:44 (twenty years ago)

GETTING THE NYCERS TO DRINK, ISNT REALLY HARD BRO.

ddb (ddb), Thursday, 9 February 2006 17:50 (twenty years ago)

having fun with stockholm cindy on stage (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 9 February 2006 21:37 (twenty years ago)

Yes absolutely! And as a matter of fact I was just looking at Exeter CIty's recent results. Will City finally get out of the Conference this year??

So what's the plan here in NYC?

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 9 February 2006 21:43 (twenty years ago)

figure something out by june?

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 9 February 2006 21:46 (twenty years ago)

Well June is right around the corner! But maybe there's some sort of wedding or event that brings Tim to our neck of the woods, other than the Puerto Rican Day Parade.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 9 February 2006 21:52 (twenty years ago)

Haha Aaron demonstrates his enviable nose for the controversy: the sordid truth is that I am timing my trip to NYC to coincide with Lee Ann Womack's Staten Island show (June 16th). I'm guessing Lee Ann Womack is not the core of NYCILx's taste, but maybe I'm wrong. I'm worried about it selling out before I have the chance to get tickets.

Other plans: watch lots of the World Cup in boozers in the afternoon; look at some art; see you lot; visit some friends in DC; go and see George Jones play in Pennsylvania. GEORGE JONES!

(Laurel did you get my email a few days back?)

(Aaron: play-offs look possible, automatic promotion less so now.)

Tim (Tim), Friday, 10 February 2006 09:40 (twenty years ago)

tim i work in west chelsea by all the galleries, so we can go after work on thursday when all the galleries have free cheap wine!

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 10 February 2006 09:56 (twenty years ago)

and check out hot artfags

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 10 February 2006 10:22 (twenty years ago)

Hooray! Though I think Lee Ann is playing on the Thursday.

I'm most excited about seeing you lot.

Tim (Tim), Friday, 10 February 2006 12:44 (twenty years ago)

Tim, not only did I get yr mail, but I responded to it! Fuck my email, I'll send it again.

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 10 February 2006 14:35 (twenty years ago)

(My address on here's still live, even though I don't get the chance to check it so often these days. Anything arriving at the address I mailed you from gets wired directly into my brane 24 hrs/day, Monday - Friday.)

Tim (Tim), Friday, 10 February 2006 14:52 (twenty years ago)

Paging Robot Hopkins's brane! I have re-sent electronic missive; please confirm download to bio-ware.

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 10 February 2006 15:02 (twenty years ago)

aaron is alive?

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Friday, 10 February 2006 15:05 (twenty years ago)

Sorry Laurel it didn't arrive, I fear you're getting trapped by the work spam filter (it only sends me notification of what it's caught once a week, stupid electronic quasibrain, or at least stupid meat creatures who operate same). If you try sending to the yahoo address I promise to brave the bright lights of my local internet caff tonight, to see what you had to say. And, if you're unlucky, to respond.

Tim (Tim), Friday, 10 February 2006 16:23 (twenty years ago)

Anything I can change to get through the filter? Or should I use my work address so it's official? I'll cc: the yahoo account just in case but that would be a pain for you, I know how the bright lights burn THEY BURN.

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 10 February 2006 16:27 (twenty years ago)

You might try your work address, maybe that will work. Apols for the pain.

The ways of these humang firewalls are unknowable to me.

My local internet caff is OK and cheap but it's not the light it's the SMELL. Maybe I should buy myself a pooter, eh? Oh no that money's going on a ticket for an flight on a aeroplane, or two.

Tim (Tim), Friday, 10 February 2006 16:41 (twenty years ago)

Sent from work account and by god, it had better get through. xoL

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 10 February 2006 17:06 (twenty years ago)

Whoosh!

Clearly our spam filter is some kind of snob.

Tim (Tim), Friday, 10 February 2006 17:18 (twenty years ago)

I hope this includes me.

Mary (Mary), Friday, 10 February 2006 21:05 (twenty years ago)

(the visiting friends in dc part--for some reason it disappeared)

Mary (Mary), Friday, 10 February 2006 21:06 (twenty years ago)

Mary, so do I. I've dropped you a mail at the address on here, but I don't know whether it's real or made up. Ah, the modern world.

Tim (Tim), Monday, 13 February 2006 11:11 (twenty years ago)

Well I look forward to seeing you Tim! Let me know if you need a place to stay. My couch is literally as comfortable as airport waiting room seats (I think it IS airplane waiting room seats actually), but I can definitely rustle up a bed or air mattress. And maybe I can drag you to a Mets or Yankees game? And then we can drink to City making it out of the conference league (I hope)!

(Hey Yanc3y I emailed you a couple months ago but you never wrote back! I'm hella busy but pretty much alive. Call me!)

Aaron W (Aaron W), Monday, 13 February 2006 18:55 (twenty years ago)

if mets are involved (or if the yankees are playing a team i can root for), i totally wanna be there.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 13 February 2006 18:56 (twenty years ago)

Hi Tim: the address is not true, but if you click on the link it should go through to me. Or, insert my last name, if you know it.

Mary (Mary), Monday, 13 February 2006 20:18 (twenty years ago)

i only know a few of you, but i'm curious if many ILXors are heading out to Optimo @ Don Hill's this Fri. lots of fap-worthy bars nearby.

midi sanskrit (sanskrit), Monday, 13 February 2006 20:57 (twenty years ago)

Definitely going to Optimo - maybe Ear Inn b4 for saucing.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Monday, 13 February 2006 21:00 (twenty years ago)

Ear Inn is a classic place, was thinking along similar lines.

might also have dinner there w/ gf. Got to love Valentine's Day gifts that you can enjoy too (don't worry, she's also gettin other stuff)

midi sanskrit (sanskrit), Monday, 13 February 2006 22:54 (twenty years ago)

yay ear inn :-) :-) :-)

i always have lots of fun every time i'm there.

kanye twitty (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 00:19 (twenty years ago)

I am all about going to see the Mets or the Yankees, or whoever really, provided (a) the game doesn't clash with an important World Cup fixture on the telly (it shouldn't) and (b) someone is kind enough to point out one or two of the subtleties of the game(s) to an ignorant offcomer. Do these things tend to sell out or can one buy tickets on the night?

Last time I was in NYC I went to see the MetroStars but I'm guessing that's not the full-on US sports experience.

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 16 February 2006 09:47 (twenty years ago)

OK just a small piece of your advice (pls): I want to get tickets to go and see the Lee An Womack show which is scheduled for St George's Theatre (what kind of spelling is that?) on / in Staten Island. Their website says ticket prices tbc, and the box office, a week or so ago, said "ring back in two or three weeks".

Am I missing one trick or should I just sit back and ring again in a week or so?

Tim (Tim), Friday, 17 February 2006 17:14 (twenty years ago)

Hi Tim,

That theatre looks cool. It looks like you should still wait, but is there any LAW fansite you can get on to appraise you of the moment tix go on sale, or to offer internet pre-sales, or such?

Mary (Mary), Friday, 17 February 2006 20:48 (twenty years ago)

the ivy league are going to play on thursday at the cake shop.

youn, Tuesday, 21 February 2006 12:41 (twenty years ago)

Hey Tim.... I'll agree to your requirements about the baseball game as long as a) I can tag along and watch some World Cup with you and b) you don't expect that baseball has the simplicity of footy and it's thirteen rules. For instance, there are some rules (such as the "balk") that I'm pretty sure no one understands. But seriously, I'm sure that hstencil and myself and anyone else who wants to go would be happy to explain the rules.

As far as buying tickets, we could probably buy them ahead of time if you wanted to pick a date, but they're usually available whenever (although big Yankees games tend to sell out). Looks like Mets tickets go on sale at the end of the week. Best analogy between the Yankees and Mets is Man U v. Man City, although the Mets look to have improved quite a bit this off-season. So yeah, maybe we can figure out who wants to go and what date works and somehow by June we'll have organized this thing.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 17:13 (twenty years ago)

That sounds ace! And company to watch the footy would be much valued. I suppose I ought to get on and book some flights, really.

Tim (Tim), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 17:15 (twenty years ago)

BA is very cheap right now.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 18:50 (twenty years ago)

And more room for large gentlemen such as we. Virgin has better telly though. US carriers are arse and may go bankrupt.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 18:51 (twenty years ago)

virgin seating sucks, yeah.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 19:00 (twenty years ago)

what about this thursday? you don't have to drink. you could eat chocolate cupcakes instead. with chocolate frosting.

youn, Wednesday, 22 February 2006 01:14 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
I'm in NYC for the first time April 22nd - 29th

Obvious and non-obvious tourist stuff that I absolutely must do? Any super-exciting events, gigs etc going on that week? On topic: anyone fancy a pint?

robster (robster), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 12:17 (nineteen years ago)

... or just get together on Sunday, April 2, or on Friday, April 7, or on Tuesday, April 11.

youn, Wednesday, 29 March 2006 12:47 (nineteen years ago)

(more long range bizniss but if anyone fancies watching England play Trinidad & Tobago in some alehouse somewhere, at noon (or maybe 1pm, timezone calculation's not my game) on June 15th, I'll be fresh off the plane and full equipped with one raging thirst, or perhaps more than one. Sorry for interrupting, Rob.)

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 13:05 (nineteen years ago)

oh awesome, robster is coming! hm, michael mayer and i think the orb are playing at cielo on the 27th. jamie lidell is playing a couple times. thats all i can think of. but yes, lets get drinks.

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 18:46 (nineteen years ago)

hey, so the film forum's been doing this don siegel film festival and next week there's a double feature of madigan and coogan's bluff. anyone want to make a FAP of the april 5th 7:30/9:30 showings? (there's another the day after but i'm going out of town that night.) late '60s nyc, henry fonda and richard widmark and clint eastwood, two films for ten bucks. and if you get there early you can grab a slice at the excellent demarco's pizza on houston, which is partially owned by the di fara's people.

MADIGAN

(1968) By-the-book police commissioner Henry Fonda gives sticky-fingered cop Richard Widmark and partner Harry Guardino just 72 hours to retrieve Steve Ihnat, the hyper, bespectacled killer they let escape. “The color photography continually stamps incidents with the authentic familiarity of various facades and corners of New York,” raved the Times, though much of it was shot on the Universal backlot. 35mm Studio Archive Print.
3:30, 7:30

COOGAN’S BLUFF

(1968) “Eastwood gives New York 24 hours — to get out of town!” Cowboy Arizona cop Clint Eastwood, in the Big Apple to pick up captured fugitive Don Stroud, finds his Wild West methods making him a fish out of water, amid the disapproving glares of local Lieutenant Lee J. Cobb and social worker Susan Clark. 35mm Studio Archive Print.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 21:17 (nineteen years ago)

The Day The World Turned Dayglo Redd (Ken L), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 21:17 (nineteen years ago)

haha! Anyway 4 hours is a long time to spend with movies I (and others?) have already seen before when we could be chatting, maybe?

Alternatively, Jacques Tati's godly Playtime is showing again at AMMI on April 7-9, and um, there must be a good bar in Astoria? somewhere?

youn, Friday, 31 March 2006 00:15 (nineteen years ago)

Did anyone go to see Playtime? Should I go today?

youn, Sunday, 9 April 2006 15:37 (nineteen years ago)

If you've never seen it in a theater, HELL YEAH.

I'm probably going.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 9 April 2006 17:05 (nineteen years ago)

Phil2, yes! Orb and that sounds excellent as does drinkin'. Is your displayed email addr a real one?

yep! thats my email address. gimme an email when you're around! ill try to think of more fun things.

phil did you read the article in the new yorker about hedi slimane? what do you think about dior homme?

no, i missed it. i like dior but i dont think i could wear it very well, and also i'd feel silly in it

phil-two (phil-two), Sunday, 9 April 2006 17:22 (nineteen years ago)

i really want to see playtime, but am too not-well and have too much stuff to do. are we ever going to get a dvd?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Sunday, 9 April 2006 17:40 (nineteen years ago)

I think it's among the top 3 films I can't imagine a DVD doing justice to.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 9 April 2006 17:43 (nineteen years ago)

criterion's been planning to re-release their dvd for sometime now.

i didn't know this was playing! i'm probably going to miss it, too many other things to do :(

joseph (joseph), Sunday, 9 April 2006 19:11 (nineteen years ago)

phil did you read the article in the new yorker about hedi slimane?

once in london i was hanging out with some friends and their friends, and was chatting with some guy named Eddie, and we were all hanging out all nite at a few bars then to some gay party called golf sale, then later i asked what he did and he said he was a fashion designer. i was like ohh thats cute. a fashion designer.. "so what is your label called?" "dior homme". OOF.... "oh...." hedi. not eddie. suzy was there too.

phil-two (phil-two), Sunday, 9 April 2006 19:17 (nineteen years ago)

that was a fun night. i'll miss george&dragon sundays.

lauren (laurenp), Sunday, 9 April 2006 19:30 (nineteen years ago)

Sorry, Dr. Morbius, I missed the train. (In case you were planning to say hello. Not that I counted on it :) You should come to see The Garden of the Finzi-Continis on April 21. It's free, there's a good-sized screen, and the chairs are comfortable. More info: http://www.yale.edu/cinema/ (xpost)

Yes, he makes sense of short sleeves in suit jackets! You should look at his coats, phil. I'm serious! The article makes him out as the indie kid of fashion - who, momentarily, is on top of the world. (The indie snobbishness as well - now I hate Tom Ford.)

youn, Sunday, 9 April 2006 19:31 (nineteen years ago)

i couldnt afford dior anyways. but holy shit tom ford is so so so hot.

lauren, when u coming over?

phil-two (phil-two), Sunday, 9 April 2006 19:39 (nineteen years ago)

I saw Playtime last night (first time on the big screen!), which is why I brought it up on the Cache thread and why I will be thinking about every other film in it's terms for a long time. If you've never seen it on the big screen, do every within your power to see it! You will not regret it!

C0L1N B... (C0L1N B...), Sunday, 9 April 2006 19:52 (nineteen years ago)

it's=its, obviously.

C0L1N B... (C0L1N B...), Sunday, 9 April 2006 19:53 (nineteen years ago)

youn, you should go see The World on the 28th

gabbneb (gabbneb), Sunday, 9 April 2006 20:09 (nineteen years ago)

Maybe I should try to convince the film society to show Playtime and the films by Garrel that I missed. The World sounds interesting!

youn, Sunday, 9 April 2006 20:25 (nineteen years ago)

NYC - we should drink

maybe, say, on the 23rd?

:)

There's drinking tonight if anyone wants to know the secret clubhouse

Fight the Real Enemy -- Tasti D-Lite (ex machina), Monday, 10 April 2006 11:58 (nineteen years ago)

I will be there, obv. And Jon, I have a present for you.

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 10 April 2006 12:15 (nineteen years ago)

Don't think I can make the clubhouse tonight, alas.

I just saw The Garden of the Finzi-Continis on DVD, so a trip to New Haven is out.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 10 April 2006 12:21 (nineteen years ago)

What's happening on the 23rd?!

Paul Eater (eater), Monday, 10 April 2006 14:03 (nineteen years ago)

weeeeeeel, me and Vic have decided at the last minute to book 3 nights in NYC for the wedding anniversary, we get in at half ten on the 21st and fly out again at 11pm on the 24th.....

I see above that Robsters' in town too :)

DBA? or has it gone downhill?

Porkpie (porkpie), Monday, 10 April 2006 14:26 (nineteen years ago)

dba is the same as it ever was, i think. still very good for scotch/whiskey and unique beers.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 10 April 2006 14:41 (nineteen years ago)

some people try to trash that place as sceney or "over" but they are forgetting the Scotch selection.

jinx hijinks (sanskrit), Monday, 10 April 2006 16:28 (nineteen years ago)

its sceney?

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 10 April 2006 16:37 (nineteen years ago)

sceney = untucked button down shirts and boot cut jeans

ddb (ddb), Monday, 10 April 2006 16:44 (nineteen years ago)

Whooo! The question is: where are you eating?

Paul Eater (eater), Monday, 10 April 2006 16:46 (nineteen years ago)

The one thought so far is les halles, but that's only cos Chris loves Bourdain, who isn't even there anymore. We only even thought about coming over this morning, so we haven't had much time to think about it!

Vicky (Vicky), Monday, 10 April 2006 16:58 (nineteen years ago)

that's great news!

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 10 April 2006 17:04 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, three of my favorite london'ites in town at once.

which les halles are you going to?

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 10 April 2006 17:08 (nineteen years ago)

Dunno, which one's best?

Vicky (Vicky), Monday, 10 April 2006 17:10 (nineteen years ago)

there are a lot better places to eat in new york

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 10 April 2006 17:13 (nineteen years ago)

I know, but it's more of a pilgrimage. And tartiflette.

Vicky (Vicky), Monday, 10 April 2006 17:15 (nineteen years ago)

oh, i've only been to the one in the financial district. it was really quiet. the park avenue one probably is more lively. is the food the same though? i dunno

there are a lot better places to eat in new york
probably, but its probably more fun to go eat at les halles, where chris is a fan of the chef, than somewhere in queens.

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 10 April 2006 17:15 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, i've only been to the financial district one, but really quiet is otm. if you want a french bistro place, i think le pere pinard is a lot more fun.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 10 April 2006 17:20 (nineteen years ago)

i've only been to the gramercy location, which was always rammed. food was never less than excellent, but i've not been since ab left.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 10 April 2006 17:36 (nineteen years ago)

since I bought Time out NY this evening I've got a stupid huge list of things to do, whci, once again, I'll never acheive. But among them:

Gray's Papaya (never got roiund to that last time)

Bouchon - cops we'll never get into per se

maybe Mario Batali's place (you can see now that I'm living in dreamland)

We had a lovely meal at Prune last time...... maybe again.

I love the sound of the watermelon pickle and crispy oprok salad at Fatty Crab, the cuban reuben at Mo Pitkins' house of satisfaction and the pork Butt at R.U.B. which feeds 6 (maybe 10)

ooh yeah, has anyone been to Room 4 Dessert? it sounds interesting....

Porkpie (porkpie), Monday, 10 April 2006 21:23 (nineteen years ago)

a question - Is babbo worth going to? and would we get reservations if so?

we should get off your drinking thread shouldn't we?

Porkpie (porkpie), Monday, 10 April 2006 21:36 (nineteen years ago)

great nyc food deals - $20 lunch at JoJo and $20 lunch/$35 dinner at the Cafe at Aquavit

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 10 April 2006 21:37 (nineteen years ago)

I love the sound of the watermelon pickle and crispy oprok salad at Fatty Crab, the cuban reuben at Mo Pitkins' house of satisfaction and the pork Butt at R.U.B. which feeds 6 (maybe 10)

if you like pork, you should go to momofuku's noodle shop in the east village. tiny upscale'ish noodle shop with pork belly soup. whoa yum.

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 10 April 2006 21:46 (nineteen years ago)

babbo is so worth going to, even if you have to go at 5.30 or 10.30 or some otherwise inconvenient time.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 10 April 2006 21:49 (nineteen years ago)

lupa is also very, very good and might be easier to get into.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 10 April 2006 21:50 (nineteen years ago)

Momofuku rocks, but you either have to go right when they open or at some weird off-hours, like 3 pm. Otherwise it's mobbed.

But yeah, steamed pork buns. Wow. And great noodles.

Mo Pitkins is okay but I wouldn't call it a must-do. Their deep-fried mac and cheese seems great in theory but is sort of dry in practice.

Renard (Renard), Monday, 10 April 2006 21:58 (nineteen years ago)

Bouchon is nasty. Check out Uovo!

Paul Eater (eater), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 02:56 (nineteen years ago)

jesus, I can't type for shit on this keyboard!!

our next problem is when to try for..... Saturday is going to be booked out everywhere, and Sunday is for drinking.... We have to be at JFK at 9.30 on Monday night, we could try and squeeze in 3 courses, but it ain't going to do it justice is it? Vic thinks it would be fine though - folks?

Prety much decided on either Babbo or Lupa (that's where Mark Lardner is, yes?) though. Mind you, I'll probably be eating the whole sodding weekend :)

Porkpie (porkpie), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 05:45 (nineteen years ago)

since this had become a food thread, I heartily recommend Bar-B-Q way down on 20th in Park Slope (Greenwood Heights, actually:

http://brooklyn.citysearch.com/review/41686946

I had the most amazing smoked ribs there last weekend. And to tie it back in to the thread, it's a pretty great bar.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 15:59 (nineteen years ago)

i've never been to babbo :( but here's what you'd be in for at lupa: a small, bustling restaurant with absolutely glittering waitstaff and very very very yummy food, tucked above houston st. in the village ... nice worn old wooden tables. make reservations if you can, and if there's nothing the day you want to go, just turn up. you'll be able to eat at the bar at the very worst and they may find a table for you.

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 16:02 (nineteen years ago)

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 16:09 (nineteen years ago)

ART BRUT tonight!

well Bar B Q is 5 blocks from mine. (gabb, if a $20 lunch is a deal no wonder you're on the Democratic Leadership Coucil.)

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 16:11 (nineteen years ago)

i'm going to both, phil.

tracey otm about lupa. it's worth just showing up. also, batali's restaurants are pretty friendly. try calling and telling them that you're in nyc just for the weekend, it's your anniversary, you've always dreamed of eating at babbo etc etc and see if they can do anything for you.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 16:11 (nineteen years ago)

at Jazz Standard, you can eat bbq from Blue Smoke upstairs while listening to good live music, but the q is merely pleasant, and rather expensive, especially after the music ticket

if a $20 lunch is a deal no wonder you're on the Democratic Leadership Coucil

it's a deal when it's classix by one of the best chefs in the world, and they could get away with charging a lot more.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 16:13 (nineteen years ago)

and people on the pound considering dinner at babbo and its ilk may be less cost-conscious than you, morbs

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 16:14 (nineteen years ago)

i'm saddened beyond description that i will never get to enjoy pearson's onion rings again.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 16:14 (nineteen years ago)

and when you're a food tourist, it's more cost-effective to eat a pricey lunch and a cheap (or no) dinner than vice versa

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 16:16 (nineteen years ago)

i imagine it's not the last we've heard of pearson's. dude moves around a lot. though you might have to go up to CT or something in the future.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 16:16 (nineteen years ago)

room 4 dessert is aces. the night i went there was a protest at the falls (which was across the street) so apparently it was a lot busier than usual. but oh man, the whiskey and coke sundae is probably one of the finest concoctions i've ever had ... and pairing it with a cherry margarita (complete w/cherry smoked salt!!) just sent my whole night over the edge.

maura (maura), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 17:31 (nineteen years ago)

is it cool to just go there for drinks, or do they prefer people to order more?

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 17:40 (nineteen years ago)

in Peckham, I had something in a martini glass that included ice cream and chocolate shavings. it was gooood. i guess i don't drink much liquor these days, because afterwards, umbrella-less, i started walking around with my raincoat over my head exclaiming in beavis-isms, to the great embarrassment of my friend.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 18:05 (nineteen years ago)

In Peckham?????

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 18:11 (nineteen years ago)

yes, that was after we went to a place where you could have pinot grigio with your fish and chips. there were lots of real estate brokers and baby-clothes stores. a more southern part of peckham, i think.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 18:14 (nineteen years ago)

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 18:15 (nineteen years ago)

joseph (joseph), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 19:44 (nineteen years ago)

that sounds like the bottom end of the Rye, kind of Hopkins-ville.

I think we're sold on Lupa - I'll try and book it tonight/tomorrow.

and for extra awwww factor, we're staying in the same hotel we stayed in when we were over for the wedding :)

Porkpie (porkpie), Thursday, 13 April 2006 11:38 (nineteen years ago)

Gabbaneb I think you have been drinking in East Dulwich. In fact I think you have been to high-end chippy The Sea Cow but maybe not.

Hopkinsville, as I now insist it must be known, is the uncertain area which lurks between the two.

I am now officially jealous of Cabs but that is a good thing because it has reminded me to buy my air ticket for June.

NYC! We must DRINK! And watch football.

(Advance warning: my aeroplane will touch down at JFK 10:55am and an England game I want to see kicks off at noon. I'm resigned to missing some of the game but would like to miss as little as possible. At some point in the next six weeks I'll be asking for advice on an boozer which is (a) sensibly and quickly accessile from JFK in cab or by public transport; (b) definitely going to be showing the footer. I don't know how large or small an ask this is likely to be.)

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 13 April 2006 11:51 (nineteen years ago)

LH: Listen to Ian. I have no plans for Friday unless you count my date with the Alias DVDs but the rest of the wkend is as he says. Eat! BBQ! Drink more beer!

Tim if no one else pipes up we can, of course, ask Ben for venue advice. I wd love to come watch the footy depending on whether I can get out of work.

Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 13 April 2006 12:28 (nineteen years ago)

yes, it was The Sea Cow! the place where we drank was closer to the train (Peckham Rye) and might have been on the same street, but I'm not sure - modern decor, a small entrance area with a few tables, then stairs to a raised level (containing the bar) just beyond the entrance area and skylights/lots of glass in the back?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 13 April 2006 12:40 (nineteen years ago)

I can't think where that would be, but then I tend to avoid places with moder decor. Or decor of any description, as it goes.

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 13 April 2006 14:25 (nineteen years ago)

i am in nyc sat and sun evenings if anyone wants to booze!

What is your book about, Phil-Two?

the bellefox, Tuesday, 18 April 2006 14:05 (nineteen years ago)

hello New York, this weekend!! has the steering committee (I'm looking at you Tracey Hand) thought up a place to go in.... Brooklyn on Sunday afternoon/evening?

Has the Blind Tiger shut? if so, that's a shame, I liked it there, apart from the toilets.

Also - should we book for lunch on Monday at Les Halles (Grammercy one)?

Porkpie (porkpie), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 18:00 (nineteen years ago)

The Bar round by Mr Hand's house is plenty pleasant, I know you will not trust me on this one, but it is.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 18:02 (nineteen years ago)

you could consider this place

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 18:06 (nineteen years ago)

yeah the Blind Tiger is closed

I heard it was moving somewhere else but I don't know where

speaking of W. Village is Little Branch ever going to reopen?

Renard (Renard), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 18:10 (nineteen years ago)

I was at Little Branch a week or so ago -- hadn't heard about any closing.

Paul Eater (eater), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 18:20 (nineteen years ago)

hahaha @ gabbneb linking to "the economist"'s city guide!!

moe's is nice as ed says, especially in the afternoons, but it gets rammed on the weekends and there's nowhere to sit.

last night i had a drink at clem's in williamsburg. the bartender got us all drinks on the house after we'd been there an hour or so, and smoking was permitted. so maybe williamsburg's not so bad yet as all that. clem's also suffers, however, from the no place to sit syndrome - there are actually no tables at all.

SO irrespective and irradiatedly, the steering committee has sloshed its magic 8-ball around and the spinning dodecahedron blurrily swims to view:

THE ALIBI, at 242 dekalb ave. i believe that's between clermont and vanderbilt.

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 18:32 (nineteen years ago)

I was at Little Branch a week or so ago -- hadn't heard about any closing

after it first opened they had a water main break, I went by 2 different times (weeks apart) and they were closed.

maybe they have been reopened for a long time by now ... I'm not in that neighborhood very often ...

oh yeah and citysearch says the Blind Tiger is moving to Bleecker & Jones

Renard (Renard), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 18:42 (nineteen years ago)

yay!

one last recommendation needed(for now) - we need a bar that will be showing the Liverpool vs Chelsea FA cup semi final. Ideally this needs to be somewhere between Century 21 and Chelsea/soho. (which unfortunately rukes out the 11th street bar, home of the nyc LFC fan club)

Porkpie (porkpie), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 18:44 (nineteen years ago)

11th Street isn't between C21 and Soho, but it is between C21 and Chelsea. Admittedly, the bar is much further East, but Nevada Smith's, also on 11th, might be reasonably en route to Chelsea.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 18:53 (nineteen years ago)

The only place I can think of that meets those strict geographical requirements and is likely to show the match is Nathan Hale's, which is a short walk up from C21.

Paul Eater (eater), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 18:58 (nineteen years ago)

there's a chance that this place quite close to C21 might be showing the game

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 19:04 (nineteen years ago)

so fort greene, then? sigh.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 22:14 (nineteen years ago)

Porkpie (porkpie), Wednesday, 19 April 2006 05:07 (nineteen years ago)

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 19 April 2006 12:12 (nineteen years ago)

Nathan Hale's is nice -- try the shepherd's pie if yr peckish. I watched Michael whatshisface off the US team allow a goal RIGHT PAST HIS ELBOW at that bar and the whole place swore to see him dead within a week.

Fort Greene is good with me!

Laurel (Laurel), Wednesday, 19 April 2006 12:22 (nineteen years ago)

Fort greene is full of gentryfiying middle management types encroaching on poorer neighborhoods with good housing stock. Think Clapham.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 19 April 2006 14:28 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, get one (1) Jay St. Borough Hall, lauren!

Ed is close to the mark w/Clapham but I'd say it's more Brixton, honestly. The middle management types HAVE moved in en masse, and half the brownstones are busily being renovated and people are laying "weed barriers" and resodding their gardens etc. but I can sense the top of the curve has been reached for now and this latest left-over-from-the-90s richification is going to roll back a bit and find an equilibrium (which is what's happened in Brixton from what I can tell)

xpost yes. just who do these places think they are

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 28 April 2006 19:22 (nineteen years ago)

it's good. you can smoke in the beer garden and it's near GREEK FOOD.

flea market economy (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 28 April 2006 19:26 (nineteen years ago)

the food they have there is pretty great. schntizels and sausages and things like a that. one friend of ours got laughed at because she ordered a breaded fried cheese cutlet. but it tasted amazing..

jinx hijinks (sanskrit), Friday, 28 April 2006 20:13 (nineteen years ago)

i've never tried the food there, but i've seen it and it does look pretty tasty.

flea market economy (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 28 April 2006 20:16 (nineteen years ago)

a breaded fried cheese cutlet.

haha how is this different from like a big mozzarella stick?

flea market economy (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 28 April 2006 20:17 (nineteen years ago)

smazeny syr! it's much better than mozz sticks (different cheese, no spices in breading) and pretty much one of the only things vegetarians can eat in the czech republic.

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 28 April 2006 21:13 (nineteen years ago)

how about thursday or friday night next week? around 7:30?

flea market economy (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 29 April 2006 00:41 (nineteen years ago)

If it's Thursday, as usual I can't be there until about 10pm. So I prefer Fri. But I'll understand if it's too crowded on a Friday evening for us to bother with and peeps wd rather do Thurs.

Laurel (Laurel), Saturday, 29 April 2006 00:42 (nineteen years ago)

i don't think they stay open that late. friday's good. wednesday's also good. the website sez the restaurant part is closed on tuesday.

flea market economy (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 29 April 2006 00:45 (nineteen years ago)

My bachelor party was at the beer garden. Love that place to pieces.

mcd (mcd), Saturday, 29 April 2006 01:33 (nineteen years ago)

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 29 April 2006 16:03 (nineteen years ago)

Cheers for the shoe party wrangling Phil! I spent Friday evening at the Guggenheim and then ran into Momus at the Whitney (right after a lady had gone up to him and said 'are you Moses?'). Hi to everyone else I met during the week - next time I intend to see more of you.

rob stern (robster), Saturday, 29 April 2006 22:12 (nineteen years ago)

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 05:32 (nineteen years ago)

easy commute from Shea Stadium! has Drew been to Astoria?

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 12:17 (nineteen years ago)

who is going to Matmos? I suggest actually buying a ticket to get into the show, I had to do that two years ago to circumvent the monstrous pay-what-you-want line as Jim O'Rourke was about to go on.

jinx hijinks (sanskrit), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 13:12 (nineteen years ago)

(xpost)

miz maura dotcom has advised me to make a contingency plan in case we can't get a table in the beer garden... there's another bar nearby (Sparrow; 24-01 29th Street) that's supposed to be good.

jbr with a z (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 13:16 (nineteen years ago)

damn, nyilx comes to my doorstep and I will be out of town. next time ...

the Sparrow is not bad, it's the same owners as Tupelo (bar that used to be at 30th and 35th in Astoria)

Renard (Renard), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 16:04 (nineteen years ago)

When y'all get together, do you talk about M.I.A. and rockism?

shookout (shookout), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 16:54 (nineteen years ago)

What is M.I.A. and can we eat it? (Ans: no.)

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 16:57 (nineteen years ago)

we talk about burritos.

jbr with a z (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 17:01 (nineteen years ago)

When London ILx meets, all we talk about is how funny it is that New York ILx barely ever talks about MIA and rockism.

I mean, what else is there?

Oh NYC, we should drink.

Tim (Tim), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 17:01 (nineteen years ago)

Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin...Therefore, take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink?...For your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 17:07 (nineteen years ago)

Are we still on for Thurs PM in Astoria?

Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 4 May 2006 13:27 (nineteen years ago)
