I AM BRINEING A TURKIS WHEN I GET HOME.

Oh man, I've been looking forward to my mom's stuffing. Best part of Thanksgiving dinner.

Laura H. (laurah), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 13:52 (twenty years ago)

Yay! Dinner, as always for the past few years, with Stripey and her folks. It'll be a grand day out, as it were.

does anyone rebel at Thanksgiving and cook gammon or duck or something instead of turkey, like some people do at Christmas here?

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 14:00 (twenty years ago)

I debated doing something other than turkey this year. im not a big turkey fan. i like everything else best. first thanksgiving at my house this year. turkahontis

yeah everyone help me out here. my mother in law is making spinach lasagna and I am charged with making side dish (or dishes). I'm thinking about an eggplant / potato gratin. any better suggestions?

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 16:13 (twenty years ago)

most people in the states wouldn't know a gammon if it hit them on the head.

All of a sudden I'm thinking of a very meaty communion.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 16:17 (twenty years ago)

I'm roasting a duck this year. A 17-pound turkey is ridiculous for 2 people.

I don't have to cook tomorrow, I just have to bring over some salad. I was looking forward to doing some more cooking, but oh well.

Lars and Jagger (Ex Leon), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 16:27 (twenty years ago)

That sounds delicious, Matt.

We're going over to a friend's tomorrow and making sides tonight, garlic mashed potatoes and Maddie's famed cranberry pudding.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 16:29 (twenty years ago)

an eggplant / potato gratin

That sounds good. I'm debating on making greek potatoes - boiled or baked roughly chopped red potato with feta and olives, dressed with lemon and olive oil.

Jaq (Jaq), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 16:45 (twenty years ago)

Apparently I am going to be baking a pumpkin pie on thursday morning. I have been given this responsibility by the clan elder a.k.a. my father. This will be a disaster, surely.

stewart downes (sdownes), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 16:50 (twenty years ago)

boiled or baked roughly chopped red potato with feta and olives, dressed with lemon and olive oil.

That sounds awesome, I don't know why I've never thought of it before considering that I keep all of those things around the house.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 16:55 (twenty years ago)

oh yeah, damn, these are some good ideas, keep 'em coming

original plan was to do a three-pasta medley: thai noodles, marinated pasta salad with balsamic vinegar, and regular garlic tomato sauce. but i was overruled by fate.

this is the first year there will be none of my grandmother's cornbread stuffing or banana pudding. :(

I'm going to my boyfriend's family since without my grandmother my family is doing nothing. Perhaps we can get it together in time for Xmas and I'll give her nana pudding a try.

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 17:54 (twenty years ago)

We're renting a house on the Russian River from tomorrow through Sunday... A not-so-savvy buddy is in charge of the turkey, so I'm considering smuggling a cornish game hen in my bag... just in case.

andy --, Wednesday, 23 November 2005 17:56 (twenty years ago)

last year i had friends over for enchiladas.

this year i'm working and my loverly roomie has bought a turkey to cook for when i get home at midnight thirty (technically not even thanksgiving anymore). i'm kind of excited.

Are you still vegan, Sourpuss?

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 18:03 (twenty years ago)

My point being, that I believe we, as Americans, should make some effort to (symbolically) recreate the pilgrims' feast. Therefore, I don't approve of deep-fried turkey.

Why don't people respect yams more? Like, treat them respectfully and don't cover them in Kraft marshmallows. Can't they exist on a savory plane instead of sweet?

andy --, Wednesday, 23 November 2005 18:10 (twenty years ago)

Thursday - Due to gf's grandmother doing poorly, we're not going to the family dinner but going over to roast a chicken. :-)

Friday - Fancy Turkey day turkey dinner at her dad's :-/

Saturday - My family comes over for roast beast dinner.

Three Thanksgiving dinners and only one of them is turkey! Yay! (Last year we fled to Paris and had goose.) By the time Monday rolls around, however, I will be quite fat, I'm sure.

M. White (Miguelito), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 18:11 (twenty years ago)

My point being, that I believe we, as Americans, should make some effort to (symbolically) recreate the pilgrims' feast.

The pilgrims ate venison though, so it's kind of unfeasible.

Thanksgiving is, like, so last month.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 18:14 (twenty years ago)

Venison sounds great for Thanksgiving.

Andy, I only like savory yams and sweet potatoes, and even then, not much.

M. White (Miguelito), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 18:14 (twenty years ago)

To jaymc:

Yes, I am still vegan, but I cheat when spinach lasagna is involved. (See also: cookies, birthday cake, raw eggs in a blender when I'm training to whoop Apollo Creed's ass, the hearts of my enemies, etc.)

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 18:15 (twenty years ago)

The pilgrims may have indeed had venison, but they DIDN'T have turkey? An indiginous game bird quite prevalent around the Mass. to Virginia area? I thought the whole point of T-giving was to somehow recreate that special day when the settlers and indians weren't at each other's throats? All the food represented are American in origin, even if potatoes are south american.

andy --, Wednesday, 23 November 2005 18:20 (twenty years ago)

Baked yams slightly mashed with butter = yum! None of that marshmallow/candied business for me.

Jaq (Jaq), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 18:29 (twenty years ago)

Shit man, I haven't had venison in years.

I think depending on where you live vension can be quite feasible. I mean it's highly unlikely you'll ever run into a turkey with your car.

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 18:34 (twenty years ago)

I bought some venison jerky a short time ago, quite nice.

SO I just went to Trader Joe's and bought (for t-giving): smoked salmon, smoked trout, muenster and gouda, crackers, olives, and six bottles of wine, including a nice French rose. I don't think the miserable pilgrims had access to Trader Joe's.

andy --, Wednesday, 23 November 2005 18:36 (twenty years ago)

I dunno.. I heard something about Trader Joe's, the Freemasons, and the Illuminati

do knut (donut), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 18:38 (twenty years ago)

I think depending on where you live vension can be quite feasible. I mean it's highly unlikely you'll ever run into a turkey with your car.

Yeah, I guess it could be. The only time I've had venison is when my dad used to go bow hunting and would sometimes bag a deer, so I just don't anticipate getting venison anytime soon.

Lars and Jagger (Ex Leon), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 18:39 (twenty years ago)

There is debate, however, if the original pilgrims had less "fizzy" Dr. Joe's soda or not.

do knut (donut), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 18:39 (twenty years ago)

Is your dad Ted Nugent?

andy --, Wednesday, 23 November 2005 18:42 (twenty years ago)

My dad has done the same thing, it is not exactly uncommon.

Allyzay must fight Zolton herself. (allyzay), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 18:44 (twenty years ago)

My dad thinks Ted is a poseur.

TED NUGENT SAID:

I'm a Bad American - this pretty much sums it up for me. I like big trucks, big boats, big houses, and naturally, pretty women.

I believe the money I make belongs to me and my family, not some midlevel governmental functionary with a bad comb-over who wants to give it away to crack addicts squirting out babies.

I don't care about appearing compassionate.

I think playing with toy guns doesn't make you a killer. I believe ignoring your kids and giving them Prozac might.

I think I'm doing better than the homeless.

I don't think being a minority makes you noble or victimized. I have the right not to be tolerant of others because they are different, weird or make me mad.

This is my life to live, and not necessarily up to others expectations.

I know what SEX is and there are not varying degrees of it.

I don't celebrate Kwanzaa. But if you want to that's fine; I just don't feel like everyone else should have to.

I believe that if you are selling me a Dairy Queen shake, a pack of cigarettes, or hotel room you do it in English. As of matter of fact, if you are an American citizen you should speak English. My uncles and forefathers shouldn't have had to die in vain so you can leave the countries you were born in to come disrespect ours, and make us bend to your will.

Get over it.

I think the cops have every right to shoot your sorry butt if you're running from them after they tell you to stop. If you can't understand the word 'freeze' or 'stop' in English, see the previous line.

I don't use the excuse "it's for the children" as a shield for unpopular opinions or actions.

I know how to count votes and I feel much safer letting a machine with no political affiliation do a recount when needed. I know what the definition of lying is, and it isn't based on the word "is" -ever.

I don't think just because you were not born in this country, you qualify for any special loan programs, government sponsored bank loans, etc., so you can open a hotel, 7-Eleven, trinket shop, or any thing else, while the indigenous peoples can't get past a high school education because they can't afford it. I didn't take the initiative in inventing the Internet.

I thought the Taco Bell dog was funny.

I want them to bring back safe and sane fireworks.

I believe no one ever died because of something Ozzy Osbourne, Ice-T or Marilyn Manson sang, but that doesn't mean I want to listen to that crap from someone else's car when I'm stopped at a red light. But I respect your right to.

I think that being a student doesn't give you any more enlightenment than working at Blockbuster or Jack In The Box.

I don't want to eat or drink anything with the words light, lite or fat-free on the package.

Our soldiers did not go to some foreign country and risk their lives in vain and defend our Constitution so that decades later you can tell me it's a living document ever changing and is open to interpretation. The guys who wrote it were light years ahead of anyone today, and they meant what they said - now leave the document alone, or there's going to be trouble.

I don't hate the rich. I help the poor. I know wrestling is fake.

I've never owned, or was a slave, and a large percentage of our forefathers weren't wealthy enough to own one either. Please stop blaming me because some prior white people were idiots - and remember, tons of white, Indian, Chinese, and other races have been enslaved too - it was wrong for every one of them.

I believe a self-righteous liberal Democrat with a cause is more dangerous than a Hell's Angel with an attitude.

I want to know exactly which church is it where the "Reverend" Jessie Jackson preaches; and, what exactly is his job function.

I own a gun, you can own a gun, and any red blooded American should be allowed to own a gun, but if you use it in a crime, then you will serve the time.

I think Bill Gates has every right to keep every penny he made and continue to make more. If it makes you mad, then invent the next operating system that's better and put your name on the building. Ask your buddy that invented the Internet to help you.

I don't believe in hate crime legislation. Even suggesting it makes me mad. You're telling me that someone who is a minority, gay, disabled, another nationality, or otherwise different from the mainstream of this country has more value as a human being that I do as a white male.

If someone kills anyone, I'd say that it's a hate crime. We don't need more laws! Let's enforce the ones we already have.

I think turkey bacon, turkey beef, turkey fake anything sucks.

I believe that it doesn't take a village to raise a child. It takes a parent with the guts to stand up to the kid and spank his butt and say "NO!" when it's necessary to do so.

I'll admit that the only movie that ever made me cry was Ole Yeller.

I didn't realize Dr. Seuss was a genius until I had a kid.

I will not be frowned upon or be looked down upon or be made to keep silent because I have these beliefs and opinions. I thought this country allowed me that right.

I will not conform or compromise just to keep from hurting somebody's feelings.

I'm neither angry nor disenfranchised, no matter how desperately the mainstream media would like the world to believe otherwise.

Yes, I guess by some people's definition, I may be a bad American.

But that's tough.

My Georgia relatives usually have venison, Brunswick stew, and a vinegary pork BBQ the day before Thanksgiving, On the day it's whatever the young men have shot that morning. Seriously. One year we had 55 dove, each one wrapped in a slice of bacon and smoked.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 20:41 (twenty years ago)

New side dishes we're trying this year:

Apple sausage stuffing
Sherry-soaked cranberry sauce

Did anyone else see that the creator of Stove Top stuffing just died? Perfect timing (as far as deaths go).

Also, for a chance of pace, one might try deep frying the turkey. I know several folks who swear by it (though I have no idea what they do with the grease at the end).

Re the gregariousness, it doesn't matter if I am mute, dumb and etc., the tag-team couple visitors have a well-rehearsed shtick which proceeds be ears deaf or not. The kind of talkers who don't even pause long enough to hear you say "oh...?" nor look to a nod of the head for approval to coninue.

NEW YORK - A giant balloon at the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade snagged a street light near Times Square and caused part of it to fall into the crowd, injuring two people, according to police and eyewitness accounts.

The accident happened near the end of the parade when the balloon's tethers became entangled on the head of the street lamp, about 2 1/2 feet in diameter, and knocked it off.

The 26-year-old woman and 11-year-old girl were apparently hurt by the debris. They were in stable condition at the Bellevue Hospital emergency room, said hospital administrator Peter Schectman. The nature of their injuries was not immediately known.

"It happened so fast," said parade spectator Karim Simmons, of Queens. "I said, 'Oh, my God!' It dropped like a rock."

The circumstances were an echo of a 1997 accident, when two people were seriously injured when 45 mph winds forced a "Cat in the Hat" balloon into a metal pole on Central Park West.

Officials then set guidelines that would limit the use of balloons if wind threatened to be too strong.

Parade organizers were given the go-ahead to use the balloons this year, but ordered them tethered on shorter lines because of some moderate breezes at the parade's start.

It was not immediately clear if wind played a factor in this year's accident, which involved the "M&Ms" balloon.

Among those watching was 85-year-old Ron Kahn, who took pictures while perching on a ladder.

"This is wonderful. It's part of New York," Kahn said.

Sayra Hernandez watched from a side street with her son, Lucas, 4, sitting on her shoulders.

"It seems better on TV, maybe more glamorous, not this hectic," said Hernandez, 30, of Manhattan. "But the smile on my kid's face is priceless."

I'll bake it and let you know how it turns out. It might suckkk.

The topic inadvertently turned to Mexicans from Geese. How to classify them as indigenous. But then who would run the Walmart.

Stephen, did you see the video of the turky fryer fires on boing boing today?

I'm going to see a movie this evening- most of my day was nice & quiet. I picked up some cranberry sauce at the grocery store and baked two pumpkin pies this morning. So my Thanksgiving lunch with my doggie was cranberry sauce, a nice salad with avocado, and a slice of pumpkin pie. Yum.

We just had a Griswold-worthy dinner. My mom didn't know whether to laugh, cry, or decapitate everyone in striking distance. My 90-year-old grandfather threatened to "punch that guy right in the face next time I see him" -- "that guy" being the one who recommended the horrific restaurant we ate at. My father nearly choked when I said "I swear to God we're eating Swanson turkey." I guess we should have known things were going to be bad when we walked into the restaurant and the sign said "Dress Code Enforced: After 6, men must wear shirts with sleeves." Oh, and the first waitress I saw had a ginormous gauze patch above her eye and was exhaling cigarette smoke out her nose when she asked for our name.

I have at least given myself the early t-giving day present of PUMPKIN PIE albeit mine came from Konditor & Cook. No messin' with Libby's canned this year.

I love doing thanksgiving dinner because of the sausage and wild rice stuffing recipe that I made up; also it is only rubbische cooks who serve dry turkey. There are methods to keep that from happening.

Christmas at one grandparent's was prime rib of beef and at the other it was a lovely HAM. I have done boxing day at my friend N3lli3's parents ever since she moved across the street from us (her dad is English), which means the occasional goose/ham combo or we literally are on the leftovers.

No bowls? Use coffee mugs!

Baked 12 lbs yams last night for smashing. 25 lb (!) heritage free-range turkey thawing - goes in the brine tonight. Pumpkin pudding gets steamed tonight. Also, grilled salmon and a quorn turkey-like roast tomorrow. Home-made yeast rolls, corn dodgers, rice and peas with toasted pine nuts, seared chili sesame green beans, canned jellied cranberry sauce (which I LOVE BEYOND REASON!), etc etc etc.

Jaq (Jaq), Wednesday, 22 November 2006 17:51 (nineteen years ago)

Nope. Nothing like that. I am under the impression that it's a Northeastern thing. Pumpkin pie, though... yes! And my Grandma's Swedish Apple Pie which is hands down, my favorite pie ever. Apples + creamy goodness + brown sugar topping = fantastic.

Mmm! Pumpkin pudding! I've never had it! That sounds great, Jaq! My mom LOVES the canned cranberry sauce which she happily places on the table next to her homemade cranberry sauce, which is great.

Holiday travel plans fell through at the last minute, so it looks like this year we'll be going to a friend's big throwdown that features awesome food and a more than small amount of boozing. We're bringing apple and blueberry pie. I don't know if I've ever been this happy that plans went awry!

patita (patita), Wednesday, 22 November 2006 18:20 (nineteen years ago)

My hostess told me to bring whatever foodz I needed to make the day feel "right", since enough holidays with the in-laws have convinced her that sometimes you just need your own stuffing recipe on hand. She's awesome. I said, as long as there'll be mashed pot w/ gravy, we're good. She said, "Girl, are you ever coming to the right house. The only Thanksgiving wars ever waged in our household was the year Dad forgot to cook the flour into the roux and added the pan juices right away. I don’t think my mom spoke to him for the rest of the day....It was touch and go there for a while."

Laurel (Laurel), Wednesday, 22 November 2006 18:23 (nineteen years ago)

She still wants me to make something sweet potato-y though, and I abhore the yam/marshmallow monstrosity.

I made this last year and it was a hit. Got it off Epicurious.

THYME-ROASTED SWEET POTATOES
This slightly spicy, moist side dish is both deeply satisfying and nutritious. Sweet potatoes are rich in complex carbohydrates and fiber, giving them a low glycemic index (this means that they slow the body's absorption of sugar and help regulate blood-sugar levels). A bonus for weight watchers: All those complex carbs will make you feel fuller longer than white potatoes do.

4 medium sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into 1 1/2-inch-thick rounds
3 tablespoons olive oil
4 large garlic cloves, minced
1/3 cup fresh thyme leaves, plus 6 thyme sprigs for garnish
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes

Preheat oven to 450°F. In large mixing bowl, combine all ingredients and toss. Arrange potato slices in single layer on heavyweight rimmed baking sheet or in 13x9-inch baking dish. Place on top rack of oven and roast until tender and slightly browned, about 40 minutes. Serve warm or at room temperature, garnished with thyme sprigs.

Makes 6 to 8 servings.

my girlfriend and i are going to the movies and then to chinese food. we are as non-xtians on x-mas this day -- and i'm really psyched about it!

last year we went to a weird orphans t'giving with stoned hipsters, mostly people we didn't know and could barely talk to... this will be a lot better! if we want the turkey we can just go to some other friends' house the next day right?

leftovers = awesome.

yetimike (McGonigal), Thursday, 23 November 2006 19:59 (nineteen years ago)

Donald is doing the turkey/gravy/stuffing project and I have made 2 roasted veggie casseroles. Oven preheating now.
1. butternut squash with ginger and dried apricots
2. brussels sprouts with red onion and apple (in tamari and cider)

My sister is helping my mother with pies and mashed potatoes. Creamed onions might have gotten lost in the shuffle, I know that I didn't get the onions, and if I didn't get 'em, they didn't get got. I'm kind of the one-eyed man who is king in the land of the blind, here.

Donald also HAS to have Le Sueur canned peas and pickled purple cabbage out of a jar. A holdover from childhood. One year I made the cabbage from scratch, with apples. There was no discernable difference between that and the store-bought, so never again. Likewise the home-made cranberry sauce. Whole-berry Oceanspray is just fine, thank you!

Stuffing is the bread based goodness traditionally baked in the bird but it doesn't have to be. Would you really call that dressing?

I always thought stuffing was, by definition, stuffed into the bird to bake, but I guess not since the abomination that is Stove Top Stuffing is not necessarily meant for the inside of the bird. What I call dressing is cornbread dressing, but I'm sure there is also non-cornbread dressing. PS, prepackaged stuffing mixes can eat a bag of pope's noses.

My mom made this throughout my childhood in the 80s. The taste of it is instant time-machine for me, but results may vary.
Here is her recipe:

Mandarin Orange Salad

Dressing:
1/4 cup salad oil (not olive oil use canola or similar oil)
1/4 tsp tabasco sauce
1/2 tsp salt
2 Tablespoons white sugar
2 Tablespoons Tarragon Vinegar
Mix thoroughly and keep at room temp

Salad:
1 can drained mandarin oranges
1/2 head chopped iceberg lettuce mix with hearts of romaine
1 cup chopped celery
1Tbl chopped fresh parsley
2 green onions chopped
1/2 cup slivered almonds (roast in a pan or toaster oven)

MIx salad with dressing, Add roasted almonds on top just before serving

I use red leaf and romaine instead of iceberg, add cucumbers and avocados and scrap the celery. Because it's not Kentucky in the 1980s anymore . . .

reposting here cuz i like this one.

how to have a successful thanksgiving, get bent style...

-your relatives live 3,000 miles away and your extended family as a whole (mostly because of age/distance/death) doesn't really "do" thanksgiving anymore
-your significant other doesn't have a family thanksgiving either (similar reasons) and has no plans
-you make a turkey and a couple of well-considered side dishes and a store-bought pie, so you still have *plenty* of food but it's all killer, no filler
-you do most of the prep/cooking beforehand and relax on the day, while the bird cooks
-winner!

The Devils of Loudoun County (j.lu), Thursday, 22 November 2012 02:14 (thirteen years ago)

in re: brussels sprouts.

look up braising in your reference cookbook. basically, you halve them, saute them for a bit in a pan that you can also put a lid on and pop into the oven. enameled cast iron dutch ovens seem to be the popular thing these days. i have a cast iron fry pan with a good lid that works fine.

anyway, after you've sauted them, add a minimal amount of liquid (a quarter cup maybe), such as white wine. you can also add some crushed herbs, like rosemary. put the lid on and pop them into a medium hot oven for ten or twelve minutes. take 'em out and drizzle a tad bit of balsamic vinegar on them if you like.

i'm not sure about making the buttermilk biscuit dough ahead, but if I tried it, i'd for sure refrigerate the dough right away.

Aimless, Thursday, 22 November 2012 02:30 (thirteen years ago)

oh, and deglaze the pan, too.

Aimless, Thursday, 22 November 2012 02:40 (thirteen years ago)

I usually just roast brussels in EVOO in the oven with no saute prep, but now I want to try Aimless's version.

those mashed potatoes are craaaazy rich and good
and we didn't have to wait 9 hours for it to reheat in their crappy oven -- mr veg bought digital thermometer setup, got the oven to temp & then set up the bird and it only had to cook for an extra 20 min

Turkey is cooked, we have sweet potatoes, a yotam ottolenghi green bean salad, 2 pecan pies, 1 pumpkin, cornbread, cornbread stuffing, thermos flasks full of gravy. booze has been a great addition to family thanksgiving, esp as my sisters have aged into legal drinking yrs (though i believe one of my sisters still burns one down before dinner somewhere in/near the house). it helps that everybody has a pretty pleasant buzz/drunk. my s.o. will be joining us which is nice, her family usually has a variable thanksgiving menu whereas we have literally the same things every year, all of which she loves (and which coincidentally her mother refers to, without realizing it's our tradition, as a 'white-trash' spread). looking very much forward to a four day weekend after a grueling series of high-pressure workweeks. gobble gobble

For the first time in donkey's years, my sister will not be hosting a mega-family Thanksgiving at her house, because my brother-in-law just had knee replacement surgery and is convalescing. Our alternative plan fell through at the last minute, so this year's Thanksgiving will be a quiet, informal affair between my wife and I.

sic, I guess you're at the big Seattle krewe get-together that I was lucky enough to join last year?

I'm doing the sweet potato casserole (for the extended family this time, not just for the three of us) and, as always, the deviled eggs.

Last Friday at a Friendsgiving do I made a wild rice and mushroom casserole and more deviled eggs.

phở intellectual (WilliamC), Wednesday, 25 November 2015 21:34 (ten years ago)

Nothing really happens with Thanksgiving until the weekend in London, but I will be wandering down to a nearby bakery that does slices of pumpkin pie and coming home to have it with some kind of poultry, mashed potatoes and my wild rice/mushroom/sausage stuffing covered in all the gravy.

voodoo rage (suzy), Wednesday, 25 November 2015 21:43 (ten years ago)

William - yep, looking forward to discovering what green bean casserole is, and if it's like all other American Thanksgiving foods, where they only get eaten once a year as desserts rather than whenever you feel like them, because they're nice.

Being in the US at pumpkin beer season for the last three years has been pleasant though.

we took pumpkin pie and cranberry sauce to my kid's class today (in france) and it was the first time any of them had had either of those. pumpkin pie was a hit (like pain d'épices, one girl noted) but the cranberry sauce received more mixed reviews. too acidic, some complained. we also answered questions about the usa for about two hours, like "what's a NY taxi like", "how tall are the buildings in the usa" (they meant New York), "are the police nice there" (um, tricky one). they asked if jazz was a big thing in the usa (I think the teacher has been talking a lot about jazz) and they asked if there are a lot of celebrities in the usa, mostly so they could name ones they know (like will smith & marilyn monroe). oh and they asked if barack obama could stay president longer.

"We need the deep sea ocean explorer set. Oh! Yes that one. So what comes in this?" And if any retail drones were actually having anything resembling a good day today, it was the Lego Store people.

And maybe the ones at the Apple and Microsoft stores because them folks was MOVIN' UNITS.

Lastly, there was a big Nintendo kiosk where I got to watch granddads playing Mario Maker, next to pretty much the whole spectrum of humanity playing Splatoon against each other, next to three teenage girls getting very vocal about their co-op Triforce Heroes experience. All told a very nice tonic against shit in the news. I figured Black Friday at Tyson's Corner would have been a total disaster area, but no, it felt more like "you know how we beat ISIS? My parents decided to accept an invite they cannot safely drive to at the house of a distant aunt. I offered to drive, and they rejected the offer, miffed. Then, my sister and her kid and my wife and I told my parents that we would bring thanksgiving to them, and do all the cooking, cleaning, etc. Parents said sure, so we all uninvited myself from the distant aunt. Then, my sneaky parents reinvited themselves to the distant aunt, to which they will be driving.... but my sister and her kid and my wife I are now stuck w/o plans. Sister and I live fairly far apart, so we decided not to meet up. My wife and I are going out for seafood, because our oven is broken and we can’t cook at home. Happy fucking 2017.

Tuesday: picked up turkey.

Five minutes ago: tried to pull giblets out of turkey in order to brine it. Turkey is frozen solid in the middle. 16 ppl are meant to be eating this bird in 13 hours.

shackling the masses with plastic-wrapped snack picks (sic), Thursday, 23 November 2017 08:28 (eight years ago)

You need a bucket of really warm water and to wrap your turkey back up to be as watertight as possible. Then leave the wrapped bird in the bucket for a few hours, where it will thaw more quickly. Then remove the giblets and proceed to brine as normal.

since we’re not having anyone over we felt like turkey was a bit much so we bought some ribeye steaks. pretty sure i’m going to do this every year now tbh. the steaks that is, not the not having people over. london is usually a neat place to do thanksgiving because you get to invite other americans over that you maybe don’t see enough of. i did it up anyway though, just with smaller portions. cranberry relish, mashed butternut sqash, cornbread, wild rice, the aforementioned ribeye, and i made fuckin lava cakes for dessert. AND PUT IN A DAY’S WORK TOO.

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 26 November 2020 23:42 (five years ago)

I knew in advance that there would be a very high demand for small-sized turkeys this year. My wife wanted to have a turkey for just the two of us, for the delight of having many leftovers and some delicious dishes that use leftover turkey.

We ordered online, selecting a "12 lb. or thereabouts" sized bird. When we came to pick it up, the nearest size they had was almost 18 lbs. Our roasting pan was barely big enough. My wife shall have her wish for leftovers come true. Including braised Brussels sprouts, delicata squash, saute'd zucchini w/ mushrooms, wine, and pumpkin custard.

Respectfully Yours, (Aimless), Thursday, 26 November 2020 23:50 (five years ago)

swing out sister: live in new donk city (geoffreyess), Friday, 27 November 2020 00:15 (five years ago)

Taking a break here! So we preordered in a full precooked turkey and in the past six hours I broke it down and made stock. Separated out some stock, cooled up mirepoix and simmered it and a batch of the turkey to create a lot of soup for freezing. Then there's whatever turkey we have over the next couple of days and the rest I'm going to cube or shred and freeze. (The shredded turkey I have plans for -- creating a chili from scratch later in colder months.) And that leaves turkey for tonight, with a quick prep of spicy green beans later, and everything we ordered in yesterday we just heat up and eat (gravy, cranberry chutney, stuffing, roasted potatoes and brussel sprouts -- and a small Dutch crunch apple pie). Meanwhile the turkey carcass is already in the outside trash and the kitchen is cleaned up. It’s like I’ve achieved Thanksgiving satori.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 27 November 2020 00:21 (five years ago)

I bought a couple turkey thighs for my dinner-for-one meal (only going to cook one of them). Potatoes, carrots, celery, and onions in the pot with it. And I made a pumpkin pie yesterday.

nickn, Friday, 27 November 2020 00:22 (five years ago)

Switching from turkey to a basic meat+potatoes+carrots pot roast (that I make - bless my family but none of my grandparents or parents took an interest in cooking and my mom is still terrible) remains the best holiday decision I've made. Turkey sucks.

Sides are where it's at so I just got a small boneless turkey breast. Sliced and heated in the gravy, it's an afterthought to the cornbread dressing (tried to recreate my mom's recipe, result was a B or B-) and grated-not-mashed sweet potato casserole (ditto, A++), creamed corn, peas, rolls, etc.

We did the annual Tofurky (sorely underrated) with roasted vegetables and a mushroom rosemary gravy, and a (lemon fennel) cranberry sauce for the first time.

Got some pics from a friend who did the entire ridiculous feast for two people (including two pies and a turkey from restaurants, everything else home-made). Can't imagine facing that down.

With just the two of us to feed I'll be roasting a 10.5 lb turkey for us later today. For me tonight's roast turkey dinner isn't the real treat; it's the turkey and cranberry sandwiches, turkey-rice soup, and turkey enchiladas that will come afterward.

It will be a sadly shrunken T'Day dinner for my wife and I. We don't have other family to spend it with this year, so it's just us. We're both exhausted and slowly getting over rampaging head colds with extra added chesty coughs. I intend to make a souflé, some baked potatos w/ sour cream, and brussels sprouts. For dessert a pumpkin custard with vanilla ice cream. It's sorta special without getting too complicated.

werewolves of laudanum (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 24 November 2022 21:06 (three years ago)

We never travel for Thanksgiving, since it's always been a pain, and instead usually impose on local friends to feed us. This year my mom flew out, though, so we're hosting, just us five, which is weirdly hard to cook for (especially with one vegetarian kid, and one picky kid, back from school, and a wife that doesn't like the festival of beige food that much to begin with). My solution was to order from our local gourmet sausage stand turned catering business, which does an incredible Thanksgiving feast. My wife was worried we'd have too much food, but I promised to eat all the leftovers. And then ... karma! Our good friends were set to go to San Diego for Thanksgiving when their teenage son tested positive for covid, so two of them had to stay behind, and the mom called a couple of days ago asking if we can spare some of our feast, since they literally had nothing prepared, let alone provisions purchased, and it's just the two of them. If ever there were a holiday designed to share food with others, it's this one, and it put all my over-ordering to good use! That and a third pie, an apple cranberry, that was gifted to us at the last minute from another friend. It's a true day of paying it forward.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 24 November 2022 21:22 (three years ago)

man, three kids for thanksgiving is a different way to experience the holiday. two meltdowns, two of the kids won't eat anything but pie, one won't put down his ipad.

As fate would have it, we signed up for going to a family Thanksgiving dinner about 100 miles from here at my brother-in-law's place, but we had to back out at yesterday morning. Because we'd already shopped for the week, tonight's dinner had to be improvised from whatever was in the fridge, the pantry and the freezer.

After careful thought I decided to make baked polenta with boneless chicken breast, both topped by a tomato-based sauce full of chopped onion, garlic, mushrooms, celery, red bell pepper, basil and oregano with grated Gruyere on top. This was accompanied by a chopped raw broccoli salad with dried cranberries, toasted almonds and a dressing of buttermilk, apple cider vinegar, mayonnaise and minced red onion.

Dessert will be pumpkin custard and vanilla ice cream. It worked out great. But the wine was pretty cheap stuff.

I'm not a cook - or rather I'm a ridiculously slow cook which is why I normally don't cook - but someone made an amazing ham that made me wish it became the traditional Thanksgiving dish over turkey. On the other hand, if it wasn't for the turkey, we wouldn't have had the amazing stuffing, which was actually cooked in the turkey and also included some chopped bits of sausage inside. Brussel sprouts were also amazing, cooked with thick, chopped bits of bacon. I usually don't eat much meat, so that may have enhanced my appreciation for this one-off splurging.

we were gonna go to my cousins up the road in Vermont and see family but then they told us it was gonna be a lot of snow and they are in the woods so they kinda cancelled and to be honest we were a little relieved and it turns out that my dad was up all night the night before last worrying about driving in snow and then my cousins said it was back on! but we told them we were going to stay put because my dad didn't want to drive. so we are totally gonna order tons of Chinese food at 3pm.

We're having pork chops with red onion and apple slices, roasted potatoes, and cornbread. My brother texted me that he and his wife are in North Carolina by themselves, having left their two adult sons back in Alabama to fend for themselves, and he is very proud of having driven the Tail of the Dragon yesterday.

I made cornbread dressing and sweet potato casserole (GRATED NOT MASHED IS THE ONLY WAY), there was a $5 rotisserie chicken, our daughter brought deviled eggs and broc-mac-cheese, we opened cans of Le Sueur peas and cranberry sauce, I managed decent portion control.

WmC, Thursday, 28 November 2024 20:04 (one year ago)

After-action report: the meal was amazing. I was a little worried about the apples (Cosmic Crisp slices sauted in the pan with the pork chops and red onions) based on a childhood hatred of baked apples, but they turned out fantastic, like everything else. The cornbread was really good and we'll be eating it again for breakfast with scrambled eggs and bacon. There was some worry that this meal might not come off at all, because our oven started malfunctioning out of nowhere about two weeks ago, but the landlord sent someone by on Monday to fix it and now it's working better than when we moved in.

inlaws thanksgiving was great - we were joined by an old family friend & her new boyfriend, I hadn’t seen her in 15 years. their presence added a nice new spice to our regular mix of family,. Lots of good food, booze, impromptu singing -all in all, good times had by all. had our turkey dinner in walnut creek at my husband’s friend’s parents’ house. husband’s friend’s kid is my husband’s godson. he’s six and very sweet but kind of a handful. his friend, another boy around his age, was also there, so their chaos energy was mostly confined to each other lol. at one point after the meal they printed out a bunch of random images and made the rest of us (all adults) color them in with markers, then we each got to pick one at random to take home with us, which was honestly a very sweet idea. food was terrific, we didn’t really get to contribute to the feast because we flew up this morning, but we did help with the cleaning. very sleepy now.

donna rouge, Friday, 29 November 2024 06:22 (one year ago)

We had a traditionally awkward Thanksgiving, though not for a traditional reason. We have a relatively small, far flung extended family, with bits and pieces from both sides scattered around DC/Virginia/Pennsylvania/New Jersey/Maryland, Nebraska, England (my sister) and Australia (my wife's sister). No one typically travels, which is fine - we don't like flying for Thanksgiving, either, it's a big PIA - so most people gather with those closest to them, if they celebrate at all. However, this year my mom flew out to be with us, which was nice, so it was (supposed to be) the primary four of us plus my mom.

However, separate from this, we have an acquaintance who had the worst streak of luck a couple of years ago, peaking with the one-two punch of an acrimonious divorce and then a debilitating stroke (around age 50!) that left her partially immobilized, unable to drive, unable to read much and with improving but still significant aphasia that makes it tough for her to follow fast conversations and interject. For the past couple of years a group of us have been conscripted to help drive her around, help her with legal problems, basically help her with all sorts of stuff because, making things even more challenging, she's apparently estranged from her one living parent, has no siblings or other close (emotionally or physically) family that we know of, few (if any?) close friends and only has one child, who is currently in grad school in another state. Plus she has a fixed income and not really any employment prospects. Needless to say, things are rough for her, but the most frustrating thing is, from a selfish standpoint, none of us were that close to her to begin with. Nonetheless, we all recognize her situation is terrible and will never get better, so we feel pretty compelled to do what we can.

Often literally, as she invited herself over for Thanksgiving this year when some other plans apparently fell through, and it being Thanksgiving and us having no reason to say no, she and her daughter, visiting from Ohio, came over. And yeah, it was kinda weird. She can't socialize that well, her daughter didn't contribute much, my mom isn't good at socializing, so it was a struggle. A good thing to do as people, but challenging. Still, food we made was good, time passed, and now we're driving our oldest back to Wisconsin to see part of a football game in the cold.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 29 November 2024 14:11 (one year ago)

Awkward as it was, Josh, it was good of you to have her and her daughter over for the holiday. 👍🏽

Marten Broadcloak, mild-mannered GOP congressman (Raymond Cummings), Friday, 29 November 2024 14:20 (one year ago)

My wife's parents are in an independent living facility because my mother-in-law has Parkinsons. They don't have much of a social life and are not especially close with their extended family, so the last couple of years, it's been just the four of us. Nobody wants to cook, so we just get takeout. It all feels a little sad, because my FIL has never been much of a talker, and now my MIL physically can't speak (or move) very well and feels sorry for herself most of the time. There is very little that feels festive about it.

This year, however, a friend of theirs invited the four of us over to her family's Thanksgiving. The friend is a very nice Mexican woman about my age who used to work for a company owned by my wife's aunt and uncle. There were about 20 people there, from kids to grandparents, and everyone was speaking Spanish, or else switching between Spanish and English, because some of the older adults didn't speak English. The food, however, was a very traditional American Thanksgiving spread (turkey, ham, stuffing, mashed potatoes, green beans, etc.) -- with the exception of tres leches cake for dessert. We were made to feel very welcome, and it was just nice to be part of a big, warm group where everyone was talking and laughing and drinking.

jaymc, Friday, 29 November 2024 14:54 (one year ago)

My Sangiving, as Cubans pronounce it, turned out better than expected. Not a word about politics. In an expansive mood, my cousin made venison loin with homemade foie gras dressing, prime rib with homemade horseradish, and the usual bacon-wrapped turkey turkey and frijoles negros y arroz.

My significant other’s brother and his family hosted her, me, and her kids for the holiday, which didn’t feature any traditional Thanksgiving food but was pretty great. We didn’t talk about politics except when we were all going around the room to say what we were thankful for, and the brother mentioned being thankful for his job (in government), and when it came to me, I said something like “I’m thankful for my job, too, and you and I know that saying that has a different resonance than it would’ve a year ago” and we smiled and nodded grimly at one another.

Thanksgiving has been a sadly diminished holiday for us ever since the start of the pandemic. Only once in the past five years have we succeeded in sharing it with anyone aside the two of us, in spite of multiple efforts in that direction. This year we will go to a potluck gathering at an intentional community where a friend lives. I'm expecting that everyone there will be old like us, but nice people.

I'll be roasting a turkey for our personal enjoyment tomorrow. That's been a rarity these past years, too, so I'm looking forward to our leftover-turkey recipes for the first time in much too long. Hooray for turkey soup!

Uhh... is it just a $5 Costco rotisserie? ;-)

coq au vin is good but I found this charming swedish girl on instagram and she made a simpler version: Chicken legs (with thighs) sauteed in white wine with salt, pepper, a bunch of fresh thyme and what looks like some kind of great northern beans. I haven't been able to find beans like those so I bought some canned new potatoes. I might add some mushrooms as well, why not

I am preparing a hallucinogenic ointment from heroic quantities of deadly nightshades i purchased on ebay, i will be fasting and getting together with my ex to use the ointment on our cocks and offer thanks to all the plants whose lives have sustained us this last year. Happy holidays everyone!!

I don't know how to link insta posts but her name is klaras.antikvariska and the recipe is from Oct 21st. I think she's one of those people that dresses everyday like it's 1939

Thanks so much, I'm making this now! The only difficulty was figuring out proportions/cooking time but it seems like she's winging it, so I am as well. Smells great so far, though.

Oh wow, awesome... I bought the chicken to try it out, but it got postponed, now it's in the freezer

Let us know how it turns out

budo jeru, Wednesday, 26 November 2025 00:20 (three months ago)

haha nice. i just got all the ingredients for it! making it thursday for our little duo thanksgiving.

i'm bringing cranberry sauce to friendsgiving on friday. i had planned to make it - pretty easy - but spotted cranberry sauce at tj's and couldn't pass up the opportunity to be even lazier. it has cranberries, water, sugar and pectin - can't be too bad right?

map, Wednesday, 26 November 2025 00:23 (three months ago)

that sounds about right... I buy lingonberries at IKEA and eat them all year long

I so want a Le Creuset dutch oven but they're so fucking expensive... I have a Lodge one but it's way too big for normal use, unless you're feeding a rugby team or something

Andy the Grasshopper, Wednesday, 26 November 2025 00:26 (three months ago)

i got mine cheap(ish) at the LeCreuset outlet but yeah, they’re spendy

werewolves of laudanum (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 26 November 2025 00:36 (three months ago)

Keep an eye out at Marshall’s/Maxx - they often wind up in homewares sales there.

Everyone ready for tomorrow?

what's cooking?

Andy the Grasshopper, Wednesday, 26 November 2025 19:51 (three months ago)

Just finished my grocery shopping. Cooking for 4 men this year (one BIL one partner and two nephews) and making same menu I always do: gumbo for main.
Chilling in the parking lot enjoying my utter lack of cortisol.

Piggy Lepton (La Lechera), Wednesday, 26 November 2025 20:17 (three months ago)

yay LL gumbo <3

werewolves of laudanum (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 26 November 2025 20:20 (three months ago)

Dressing and SP casserole assembled and ready to bake. Too bad I'm all cooked out today, it's good peanut brittle weather out thurr. (25% humidity)

hey man, smell my finger, then another finger, then cigarette (WmC), Wednesday, 26 November 2025 21:04 (three months ago)

how does the weather affect the peanut brittle? or do you just mean that brittle is delish when it's humid? oh hold up that must be dry where you live.

map, Wednesday, 26 November 2025 21:15 (three months ago)

The more water in the air, the more water in the air bubbles in the brittle. If you make it in humid weather, it will immediately be sticky and chewy/gummy instead of crisp and melt-in-the-mouth. I don't make it unless the outside humidity is under 40%. I'm in a Gulf state, so dry weather isn't too common. I've often said if I was serious about making a career out of brittle instead of just a side hustle, I'd move to Santa Fe.

hey man, smell my finger, then another finger, then cigarette (WmC), Wednesday, 26 November 2025 21:33 (three months ago)

interesting. brittle is pretty popular here (intermountain west). my teeth can't handle the stuff.

map, Wednesday, 26 November 2025 22:51 (three months ago)

It tastes really good but always gives me the sensation that i am chewing on my own crumbling teeth, which i cannot tolerate.

Piggy Lepton (La Lechera), Thursday, 27 November 2025 00:10 (three months ago)

yeah same here. at this point it would be more likely to be true too lol.

Does anyone remember that "I hope you left some turkey for me?" meme that was all over ilx a few years ago?

Mark G, Thursday, 27 November 2025 04:44 (three months ago)

Pumpkin basque cheesecake that I got algorithm-baited into making is in the oven. I'll make mashed potatoes and pull apart rolls tomorrow. My wife made stuffing earlier tonight, various salads and sides ready for assembly. Other family are bringing other components.

I am mixing Lord Soto's corn casserole, the secret ingredient of which is two cups of Roku gin.

My wife and I are having bratwurst, sauerkraut and potatoes, with lingonberry jam.

Oh, and we actually have something to be thankful for: we moved from our apartment, where we had gaping-asshole neighbors on both sides who filled our apartment with weed smoke all night every night, to a (rented) house on the other side of town, where we are in total isolation on the edge of a state park.

we are taking grandpa to Fogo de Chao for an expensive experience which I’m told is also fun. Will report back.

We've got two Fogo de Chao restaurants in Miami.

The Luda of Suburbia (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 27 November 2025 18:25 (three months ago)

Ha! The capital region has like FIVE. We are going to the one close to grandpa’s apartment.

trm (tombotomod), Thursday, 27 November 2025 18:34 (three months ago)

The dining experience I wish we had more of is KPOT - there are several in the area but none particularly close to the city.

trm (tombotomod), Thursday, 27 November 2025 18:35 (three months ago)

The dressing got done early and the sweet potatoes are running way behind. Not hangry yet, but it's getting there.

hey man, smell my finger, then another finger, then cigarette (WmC), Thursday, 27 November 2025 18:37 (three months ago)

that corn casserole sounds intersting. i'm glad unperson and his person are in a better place. feeling pretty relaxed. going to start the swedish flapper lady's french chicken stew here soon, but first, lunch! i eat a lot lol. so yeah this holiday is my fucking jam. i did deadlift 475# this morning so it has somewhere to go.

Cooking up a storm right now. It's usually just our immediates, but we have the Aussies in town, and my kids back, so four teens in the house, and let me just say, I have never seen so many plates, dishes and half-full glasses or cans left around the house at once.

Heading out to friend's place in a couple hours

I thought I had invented a new side dish: sauteed corn and shallots with fresh thyme... but a quick search reveals that others have led the way before me. My novel adaptations: I'm going to sautee the shallots with a bit of amontillado sherry, and throw in a little can of roasted green chilis

A couple bottles of bordeaux chilling as I write

Andy the Grasshopper, Thursday, 27 November 2025 19:24 (three months ago)

the pumpkin torte has been salvaged, knife came out clean and it set up well, it's chilling a bit in the fridge before we head out

making pumpkin pie using my patented Donna pie crust rolling method (keep rolling it until you get so frustrated at how patchy and misshapen and crumbling it is that you just give up and patch it frankenstein-style into the pie dish)

does it look nice? no

but will it taste good? idk who knows i make pie once every three years at this point

donna rouge, Thursday, 27 November 2025 20:00 (three months ago)

hooray for the salvaged pumpkin torte!

didn’t make anything but bringing booze to my ex-girlfriend’s friendsgiving, at which i will meet for the first time her best friends, plus about 20 other people i don’t know. i am pms-ing and overly self-conscious and don’t feel like i’m going to be my best self. but i’m going, and it’ll be fine. just wish i felt more like sunny sweet normal ivy

swedish influencer chicken stew is coming together pretty nicely. basically doubled everything. added a fair amount of salt and pepper and two hunks of manchego.

Multiple levels of multiple family stresses here, mostly to do with family members getting older, but overall it was fine. Food was good, and the only shouting and crying came from the only 4-year-old present. Kinda think we might not host it again tho. I’m not sure how much people get out of it at this point, it’s kind of a fraught environment. Most everyone is doing their best, but there are a lot of difficulties. And those will probably be worse a year from now. I’m sure we can find less demanding ways to celebrate.

paper plans (tipsy mothra), Friday, 28 November 2025 00:32 (three months ago)

fogo de chao was fine. Way too busy to really enjoy ourselves in comfort; felt bad for the staff like we do every time we cheat and go out for turkey day instead of cooking at home; most of the meats were under seasoned and slightly overdone for my taste (and our daughter’s) BUT the “market table” / salad bar was excellent.

trm (tombotomod), Friday, 28 November 2025 00:54 (three months ago)

Guests gone. Food wrangled into containment. Dishes done.

Infanta Terrible (j.lu), Friday, 28 November 2025 01:01 (three months ago)

Ate lunch with my wife. Texted my mother and brother (separately; they're still not speaking). Had vegetarian biryani and a thick slab of pound cake (brought over by the retired couple across the street as a welcome-to-the-neighborhood gift) for dinner. Hung up a painting I commissioned for the cover of my last book that we wound up not using. All in all, a pretty good day.

Somewhat, his health had been declining over the past few years but his deterioration after being initially treated at the hospital for a boil and then somehow managing to fall and break his arm in the bathroom there was quick and deeply upsetting to be witness to. I don’t have any siblings so it’s just me and my mom in my immediate family now. Never had a cool older sibling, but my dad gave me a pretty good head start with his generally excellent taste—I first heard the Velvet Underground and Captain Beefheart from him, among countless others. We quarreled at times of course like any father-son relationship but he was my dad and I loved him.

(Sorry, genuinely not trying to detract from anyone’s nice holiday, that’s just how mine went. Also took a sec to type this out due to my message being repeatedly eaten by the Zing app and being distracted by both grief and talking with friends/family.)

spastic heritage, Friday, 28 November 2025 03:24 (three months ago)

Leaving the USofA for another country has become something of a Thanksgiving tradition for me. Greetings from Taipei, where I ate scallion pancakes, coffee soy milk, braised pork rice, japanese cheesecake, beef noodle soup, bubble tea, fried chicken and some other stuff, all of which tasted better than turkey #sorrynotsorry

^people who have figured out how to live^ IMHO

My sister and I got together and shared pizza, pumpkin pie, and some nice red wine. No complaints. HIghly recommend Kenji's New York Pizza dough recipe wherein he insists a food processor makes superior dough compared to a mixer.

LocalGarda, Friday, 28 November 2025 20:32 (three months ago)

i did have an anxiety attack upon arriving at my ex-girlfriend’s place, not helped by a number of factors, including: i was waiting outside for 15 minutes because she was busy prepping and not looking at her phone; and then her friend’s old slightly dementiatic father (one of the people i didn’t know yet) completely ate shit on his way in while i was outside still trying to contact my ex (he was fine, he didn’t hit his head, i offered to help him up but he stubbornly refused and hoisted himself up and told me to ring the doorbell, which is when i finally discovered the doorbell lol). but she quickly guided me outside, calmed me down and told me everything was chill, welcoming, and warm inside, and then put me to work in a useful position as the dish doer while everyone finished prepping, and that eased my nerves tremendously. her friend’s dad talked to me all night as if we had shared something intimate outside when i saw him fall, and i sort of loved it, a sweet man who wears on the nerves of everyone in his family. i also loved his wife who told me she had wanted to play the drums when she was younger but girls weren’t allowed to play drums so she had to play the harp. i spent most of the rest of the night gazing dumbly-in-love at my ex, such is my lot in life, because she is such a hot genius. but i ended up having a really great time

ivy., Friday, 28 November 2025 21:28 (three months ago)

2025 footnote: I too tried the Swedish girl's chicken... added a small can of mushrooms, a bay leaf and a sprig of rosemary... substituted a can of new potatoes for the beans, but otherwise stuck to the recipe... came out great! Went down with a nice bottle of white bordeaux, would happily make it again
