SolarSeek is Leopard-only now, but if that's not a problem for you, it's stable and smooth and I declare it the best slsk client for Mac yet.

And Solarseek eats another developer

Do you like conceptualize user behaviours and needs, designing user interfaces, building them in Interface Builder or even programming them?
I... do! I do like conceptualize! Hey, couldn't hurt to drop an email. I'm probably none more qualified than anyone who's ever used the thing, but email is free.
― kenan, Monday, 7 July 2008 04:16 (seventeen years ago)
Since the latest release of Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard we decided to give up support for older systems. Leopard helps us to program faster, more stable code in less time...
Saturday November 10, 2007 Eff these guys and the horse they rode in on. The thing that *really* annoys me about solarseek is that it doesn't "share" information fully, i.e. i use ssX and if search for files, anyone using solarseek will return only that a file with that name is present. but i can't see anything like d/l speeds, file sizes, etc., which means it's a shot in the dark whether the file is really what you want. the only way to get around this is use solarseek itself. kind of a nasty way to grab market share.
even after all these years ssX still works fine for me and is much more stable than solarseek. i just don't get the attraction - sure the interface is shiny but lots of things don't work. and these guys still haven't gotten even a beta release out over what... two-three years?
― mitya, Monday, 7 July 2008 04:41 (seventeen years ago)
you know, i've never even heard of solarseek. like mitya, i'm still rocking ssX. it's a fuckin' horrible interface but as a program it does exactly what i want.

― grimly fiendish, Monday, 7 July 2008 19:31 (seventeen years ago)
So I just world of Macs and I need a Mac-slsk client. I've heard SSX no longer works? Is solarseek my only option?
― Alex in SF, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 22:18 (seventeen years ago)
ssx no longer works because slsk changed their central servers and ssx apparently provides no easy method of switching to the new servers, I think. which makes it a bullshit application (though the way it liked to open up 500000 windows for every task already made it bullshit IMO).
alex if you have an intel-based mac (which, if it's a new one, you do), then just get ahold of VM Fusion or parallels and run soulseek in windows on there. trust me it's worth it.
― akm, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 22:21 (seventeen years ago)
Hmmn. So my only option is an $80 program? :(
― Alex in SF, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 22:28 (seventeen years ago)
you can purchase your music from a reputable music seller, like Sam Goody, Walmart, or Musicland!
― akm, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 22:32 (seventeen years ago)
Haha fine be that way.
― Alex in SF, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 22:38 (seventeen years ago)
ssx still works for me
― elan, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 22:41 (seventeen years ago)
maybe that means i'm only interacting with other ssx users? i don't know, but i don't have many problems finding things.
― elan, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 22:42 (seventeen years ago)
that is possible, from what I gathered people who didn't upgrade their slsk client can still use the program, but it will only connect with other people who haven't upgraded. so eventually this user set will shrink or disappear.
― akm, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 22:43 (seventeen years ago)
alex check your email
― akm, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 22:44 (seventeen years ago)

I'm using Soulseex... is there anyway to hide the directory names being shared? Like if I'm sharing HD/1/2/3/ I'd like only /3 to be revealed and shared... but it looks like it's going to give up those directory names anyway. Let's just say my initial username choices were unwisely revealing...
― Nhex, Monday, 1 September 2008 07:58 (seventeen years ago)
i'm having all sorts of weird problems with ssx refusing to upload to ANYBODY lately.
for example:
sometimes the "string in message to parse" can't be decoded with UFT-8 so it's switching to ISOsometimes it's "unable to read directory/file.mp3 for uploading"
and there is all sorts of weird characters showing up in the windows. for example, my uploads are often "&in% finished"
i switched to solarseek but aside from fixing these issues, program seems pretty worthless. anybody had these sorts of issues lately?

ssX fucked my mac up last time.

Still no great options. I use ssX when I SLSK. If it's spinning the CPU out of control, there's a lot you can do to tune that BS away.
― (libcrypt), Saturday, 10 January 2009 07:26 (seventeen years ago)
Wow, this is the first I knew about a server change; I don't use ssX much, but it was working perfectly (ie I was getting lots of results) last time I looked, which was probably last month. Hmm.
― Special topics: Disco, The Common Market (grimly fiendish), Saturday, 10 January 2009 11:44 (seventeen years ago)
Right, well, onto Solarseek now. Seems to be working much better than ssX did, better interface and plenty of hits also.
― milling through the grinder, grinding through the mill (S-), Saturday, 10 January 2009 13:29 (seventeen years ago)
ssx has been working great for me after the server change. I have vmware fusion and slsk proper under windows xp and never bother using it.

SSX has been very good for me as well.
― Alex in SF, Saturday, 10 January 2009 16:55 (seventeen years ago)
slrsk is pretty buggy, but mostly just in an annoying way and not in a fry-yr-hard drive kind of way. Plus, most glitches/solutions I've encountered have been addressed in the user Q&A forum. If you're willing to baby-sit it, it should serve its purpose just fine.

― W i l l, Sunday, 25 January 2009 23:14 (seventeen years ago)
i think just go into preferences and on the network tab type in port: 2242 (i think it was 2240 before?). then just restart the app.
― jed_, Sunday, 25 January 2009 23:22 (seventeen years ago)
although i'm not getting any results atm. probably because the server is down.
― jed_, Sunday, 25 January 2009 23:25 (seventeen years ago)
from googling i think you have to change the port as you noted, and also change the server to sk6.slsknet.org.
but i still can't log in. maybe the webserver and soulseek server are on the same machine or have the same isp. though i can ping slsknet.org.

ok yup www.slsknet.org says server is down.

Motherfucking motherFUCK: I've just spent two painful hours trying to set up ssX on my new(ish) iMac with a new router.
G4 PowerBook and old router: worked beautifully.
Intel iMac and new router: nope. Whatever I do, it's convinced I'm not listening on the right port.
Sussed out it was ssX (and not the router) by installing Solarseek. JESUS. That's some nasty software, isn't it? But at least it proved my router was physically capable of, y'know, opening port 2234.
Eventually, after dicking my way through the forums, I discovered that there's a bug in the build I was using. It claimed to be the most up-to-date (1.0b6 or whatever) but there's a newer version that fixes the problem ... just in case anyone comes across this thread in desperation, THIS IS THE ONE THAT WORKS ON INTEL MACS:
http://chris.schleifer.net/ssX/builds/ssX-06082006-2216.dmg
Here ends a sweary public-service announcement.

Not really. The main concern with ssX is how future slsk server changes will affect it (since development has stopped), but so far so good.
