and I don't see what the big deal is with them. They smell and they're too much work and they're not much fun. Dogs are infinitely better.

Henceforth this thread will be about two things:

1) Horses being stupid.
2) St. Bernards with whiskey kegs being the ne plus ultra earthly creature:

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 16:59 (twenty years ago)

I wish I liked horses. I mean, I do, but they're terrifying. Not because I'm afraid of kicking -- BITING. My dad is a surgeon and used to "bring work home" (by which I mean: pictures of his cases), and I can recall no less than 3 instances (w/pics!) of widdle kids getting bitten in the FACE by horseys.

Scared ever since.

giboyeux (skowly), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 16:59 (twenty years ago)

Once a horse stepped on my toe so I punched it really hard in the shoulder. I'm lucky it didn't kick me. My friend's dad told me that his grandpa had a huge hoof mark on his chest from being kicked by a Cossack horse when he was a Jew in Russia.

xpost.

Ponies are vegetablearians, they will not eat you. They will however gang up on you and mug you for carrots and then eat themselves silly on apples and end up colicky, the poor things.

Please Snap StressTwig (kate), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 17:01 (twenty years ago)

yes, midway road is quite the athlete, that's why i like him. won $630 on the exacta in the 2003 preakness thanks to that horse.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 17:04 (twenty years ago)

Take a Sunday morning stroll on Wimbledon Common and you get to here lots of plummy horse-riding instructors shouting things like "Control your ponies, children" at their young charges while local dogs bark wildly at the nervous hooved ones.

It's probably the most middle-class thing it's possible to shout.

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 17:04 (twenty years ago)

Ponies and horses can interbreed (the only qualification for ponyhood is height and sometimes breed) so yes, they do qualify as horses.

Besides, look how cute, the welsh ponies are:

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 17:28 (twenty years ago)

I liked the Lego horses. They introduced them just as I was getting too old for Lego, I always wished they'd been around sooner.

I would like to build a Lego Trojan horse.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 17:31 (twenty years ago)

They are ridiculously expensive. One used to cost my entire month's pocket money when I was 11.

For the price they really should include some sort of kicking action, combable hair, genuine horsey smell or something like that. I'm really paranoid that my house will start filling up with these in a couple of years.

The animal digs his sweaty brow into his cheek...

and they stand in the dark for an hour...

Like a necking couple.

And of all nonsensical things, I keep thinking about the horse...

not the boy, the horse, and what he might be trying to do.

I keep seeing the huge head, kissing him with its chained mouth...

nudging through the metal, some desire absolutely irrelevant...

to filling its belly or propagating its own kind.

What desire could this be?

Not to stay a horse any longer?

The first toy I ever really begged for was a Calamity Jane w/ horse (from the TV show F-Troop). Eventually I ended up a cowgirl and rode rodeo for a few years. Horses are great to work with, smell less than a dog, bite less frequently than dogs, are able to carry much more whiskey than a St. Bernard.

My appreciation of horses takes place from any vantage other than astride one, or broken beneath its hooves. I prefer them always beyond kicking distance.

Once these simple ground rules are observed, I find I tolerate them quite nicely and even have a sort of intellectually-based admiration for them, what with their historic connections with the Light Brigade and the mongol hordes and whatnot.

OK I admit that I was unaware that Aussies have a different pony definition.

A fine horsie tradition, though, has Australialand.

quincie, Friday, 2 January 2009 02:01 (seventeen years ago)

PHAR LAP
PHAR LAP
PHAR LAP
HE WAS AN AUSTRALIAN HORSIE

PHAR LAP!

quincie, Friday, 2 January 2009 02:02 (seventeen years ago)

you're right tho. I was brought up in a thoroughbred-mad family and am just used to colloquialisms etc i guess.

wilter, Friday, 2 January 2009 02:07 (seventeen years ago)

Oh geez now I'm second-guessing myself--was Phar Lap from New Zealand?

Time for my yearly viewing/weeping with the movie.

quincie, Friday, 2 January 2009 02:12 (seventeen years ago)

yeah he was, we claim him as ours tho. It's what we like to do w/ awesome kiwi stuff.

Horses and I get along well enough, provided we stay at a respectful distance from one another. Intimacy is not in the cards.

Aimless, Monday, 20 April 2009 17:52 (sixteen years ago)

They are fun to hug! Fuck u horse haters.

quincie, Monday, 20 April 2009 20:36 (sixteen years ago)

O'Connor said each team brings between 40 to 60 horses for matches, and they are continuously switched out throughout a match to keep the horses from overexerting themselves.

Wait seriously? You have to bring SIXTY HORSES to play polo?

nabisco, Monday, 20 April 2009 20:38 (sixteen years ago)

per team, apparently...

dowd, Monday, 20 April 2009 20:39 (sixteen years ago)

You don't want to know how many seahorses it takes for game of waterpolo.

StanM, Monday, 20 April 2009 20:46 (sixteen years ago)

So 4 players per side = each player requires at least 10 HORSES?

I mean, I knew polo was considered a sport of the wealth, but geez

nabisco, Monday, 20 April 2009 20:54 (sixteen years ago)

this reminds me :(

I visited my parents' farm over easter and one of the horses impaled itself on a wire protruding from a fence and obviously flipped out and wound up disembowling herself. We found her dead the next morning.

It was really horrible and the most gruesome thing I've ever seen. Just a really shitty freak accident.

wilter, Tuesday, 21 April 2009 01:59 (sixteen years ago)

Hate horses. They stink, and their piss and shit is all over the main streets thanks to the jolly tourist horse and carriage crap in the city.

Not scared of them, I just think they pong like hell.

I *am* wary of extreme horse-loving women, however. There's something ever so slightly unwholesome about a teenage girl with a horsey obsession...

one art, please (Trayce), Tuesday, 21 April 2009 02:11 (sixteen years ago)

But I would not wish Mark's awful story on any animal :(

one art, please (Trayce), Tuesday, 21 April 2009 02:11 (sixteen years ago)

good old Jethro Tull lyrics, those guys are crazy (well one of them is technically a girl now):

And your little sister's immaculate virginity wings away
on the bony shoulders of a young horse named George
who stole surreptitiously into her geography revision.
(The examining body examined her body.)

Mulvaney, Tuesday, 21 April 2009 05:32 (sixteen years ago)

You don't really need that many ponies to play polo. I've been to matches where each rider has maybe 3 ponies he/she switches out during a match.

quincie, Tuesday, 21 April 2009 13:34 (sixteen years ago)

wuhhhhhh @ those lyrics

Young Chizzy (country matters), Tuesday, 21 April 2009 13:41 (sixteen years ago)

Still that you need to round up at least 25 horses to cover both teams is kinda ridic. Like you clearly live in a different world when you know 7 other people all of whom personally own at least three horses each.

yes, but those are the wild horses; we need our polo horses for the match.

ian, Tuesday, 21 April 2009 14:18 (sixteen years ago)

ws all these horses

quincie, Tuesday, 21 April 2009 14:18 (sixteen years ago)

quincie, Tuesday, 21 April 2009 14:19 (sixteen years ago)

they can play polo too, they're pretty good at it.

not_goodwin, Tuesday, 21 April 2009 14:34 (sixteen years ago)

by themselves?

Ant Attack.. (Ste), Tuesday, 21 April 2009 14:35 (sixteen years ago)

not_goodwin, Tuesday, 21 April 2009 14:42 (sixteen years ago)

I've been to matches where each rider has maybe 3 ponies he/she switches out during a match.

Depends on whether it's low goal or medium goal polo, but it's usually at least a pony per chukka. At the highest levels of competition they tend to have more horses so they can change them out for fresh legs whenever desired.

My sister-in-law who is getting a physical therapy degree just told me how much she loved doing hippotherapy with kids. I gasped and got really enthusiastic about hippos and generally made an ass of myself, it was charming.

waka flocka display name (zvookster), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 02:52 (fifteen years ago)

The hid the hippos under the horrible name! Thank you zvookster.

The Ten Things I Hate About Commandments (Abbbottt), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 02:52 (fifteen years ago)

I am aware hippos are not friendly, and are also quite powerful, and have massive crunching jaws. But they just look so chubby and cute! Like manatee alligator dogs. Also the four or five times I have ridden a horse, the horse has invariably tried to remove me from its back quickly and painfully. "The horse could sense you didn't like it," its owner would always say. Well, I didn't like the horse, no, but my feelings didn't lead to me violently punishing the damn thing. Horses are jerks as far as I'm concerned.

eight years pass...

I got a horse to hug!

Only took me 40 years!

(Technically just a lease, but closest I've ever had to my own)

His name is Lucky hahahahaha

He is a big pony and a pinto and acts like a dog.

I love him.

call all destroyer, Saturday, 8 June 2019 02:58 (six years ago)

I like that post quincie

I fell in love with a horse when I was 12. I rode him a lot and ended up falling off him while riding bareback with my best friend. I was in traction for a few weeks and had trouble writing out my homework assignments for another month, but I never stopped loving him

Dan S, Saturday, 8 June 2019 03:18 (six years ago)

horses are rad

my cousins had horses when I was a kid & they taught me to ride. their uncle was a farrier & there was always horse stuff going on - my older cousin still does week-long alpine rides & hardcore cool stuff like that. there is just something about horse people & horse life & horse gear that makes me nostalgic & happy

congrats quincie, v excited for you!!

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 8 June 2019 03:28 (six years ago)

if you could either get one horse or two otters which would you choose

del griffith, Saturday, 8 June 2019 03:41 (six years ago)

I'm not sure if horses can truly love people, but they are capable of immense loyalty and trust for people, and so can earn our love for them.

I get a huge oxytocin hit with horse nuzzles.

Lucky and his BFF Opie come running from the far end of the pasture when I come to the gate.

So what if it is maybe only because they want treats?

mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Saturday, 8 June 2019 13:50 (six years ago)

That said, one horse vs two otters is a tough call!
