I've quit Levi's...

I bought a pair of brand new dark blue straight-leg Wranglers.

I'm just sick of the Levi's aesthetic, they've gotten so far away from the original plan... low hip-hugger bootcut rocker bullshit. Wranglers remind me of 'Hud,' which is probably the greatest fashion ideal imaginable.

Oh, apparently low jeans are out this year for the ladies... I'm a little sorry, I enjoyed the buttcracks while they lasted.

Ill-fitting clothing trends are destined to die quickly. cf. Kriss Kross.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 17:31 (twenty years ago)

high waisted jeans are far more ill-fitting than low waisted ones.

Allyzay must fight Zolton herself. (allyzay), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 17:32 (twenty years ago)

Fashion retailers deciding something is "out" doesn't always work. They tried phasing out giant baggy pants for teenage boys when my sons were in high school. Didn't stick.
So don't despair. The buttcracks may be around for a while.

gygax¡ (ex machina), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 17:34 (twenty years ago)

I heart Wranglers.

giboyeux (skowly), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 17:34 (twenty years ago)

Beth OTM, they keep trying to phase out all sorts of things with jeans that just keep sticking. Jeans have a much longer fashion cycle than other types of clothing, I've found.

Allyzay must fight Zolton herself. (allyzay), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 17:35 (twenty years ago)

I've been seeing some buttcracks around, but among the San Francisco fashion-leader girls, I've definitely seen a move away from Darkness-loving rocker chick-mode into something new, yet undefinable.

andy --, Wednesday, 30 November 2005 17:35 (twenty years ago)

I'm with you on the high-waist ill-fittingness, Ally. I got a pair of jeans at the thrift shop with too high of a waist and had to throw them out. Everytime I sat down they cut into my belly like a medieval torture device.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 17:38 (twenty years ago)

they keep trying to phase out pointed shoes for women too. not gonna happen.

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 17:39 (twenty years ago)

No, those come back in every 3 months.

Allyzay must fight Zolton herself. (allyzay), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 17:40 (twenty years ago)

The high-waisted jeans for women only really work if you a) have a pretty flat stomach and b) loveLoveLOVE your hips and waist a la Scarlet Johanssen in that fashion show photo, because they make any curvature totally obvious. If you don't want to put your waist and thighs on a platter, stick to hip-height.

Laurel (Laurel), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 17:40 (twenty years ago)

Also those short sort of gaucho-cut pants are in, and with a low waist they look retarded.

andy --, Wednesday, 30 November 2005 17:41 (twenty years ago)

I'm short waisted so I can't even begin to describe the issues I've had with high-waisted jeans.

gaucho-cut pants /= jeans. Also they almost always look retarded anyway.

Allyzay must fight Zolton herself. (allyzay), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 17:42 (twenty years ago)

"I'm short waisted"??? Explain.

andy --, Wednesday, 30 November 2005 17:44 (twenty years ago)

upper body significantly shorter than lower body, opposite of long waisted.

Allyzay must fight Zolton herself. (allyzay), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 17:45 (twenty years ago)

"leggy"

giboyeux (skowly), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 17:47 (twenty years ago)

The upside of being short-waisted is that Ally is pretty much all leg, so I refuse to feel very sorry for her fitting woes.

Laurel (Laurel), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 17:47 (twenty years ago)

You know, I just realized that my favorite winter pants, which are totally frumpy wide-wale corduroys, have a high waist. I'm wearing them right now and they aren't causing me the least discomfort. Maybe if the high waist is large enough it's okay. Also, these have a pleat so they fall baggy right from the waistband. Maybe the tightness below the waistband of high jeans adds to the pain. Maybe I should cut out all the Cozy Shack pudding. NOOOOOO!!!!!

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 17:47 (twenty years ago)

I like the H&M jeans because they fit right (ie., not baggy) and they are cheap, and you can get any color/fade in any style; no "only dark blue if you get relaxed fit" bullshit. I like my jeans like I like my women, dark and tight.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 17:48 (twenty years ago)

My favorite Levi's have always been the rigid ones where it takes ten washes just to wear them. Eventually they shrink to fit your body and they last years. They fade wonderfully if you have the patience.

laurence kansas (lawrence kansas), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 17:48 (twenty years ago)

I don't want sympathy! I never liked the way high waists looked anyway! Not on pants, at least.

Allyzay must fight Zolton herself. (allyzay), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 17:49 (twenty years ago)

Beth, I would ask if you're my mother but I'm pretty sure she doesn't know what Cozy Shack pudding is.

Laurel (Laurel), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 17:50 (twenty years ago)

dabnis coleman's ghost (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 17:55 (twenty years ago)

I wouldn't make fun of SJ, I think if you love your ass that much and you have a tiny waist for contrast, go for it. She's hot, there's no question, and I like that she reclaims the hips & thighs -- but I couldn't do it.

I like Lee dungarees best, I have two pair in different sizes but the store doesn't carry them any more. Are Lees some kind of JC Penny/awful-department store thing?

Laurel (Laurel), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 17:58 (twenty years ago)

I haven't had any Levi jeans for years, my best pair are the black Diesel ones I got for £20 in TK Maxx. I like the £20 cords from Uni Qlo, they have no leg size at all, you're only okay if you're tall.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 18:00 (twenty years ago)

I got a bunch of Free-vi's a couple years back ( they are based in San Francisco, after all), but they were those 'old' style gold miner ones and I didn't like them, I gave them to a buddy.

I guess I was sort of disappointed too about them closing the last US factory. They say now that only 3% of clothes bought in the US are made in the US. (My wranglers are made in Mexico, BTW, not China! VIVA!)

andy --, Wednesday, 30 November 2005 18:00 (twenty years ago)

Consider that these things don't even look good on Scarlett Johanssen. Released into the wild, there's no telling the damage they could do to men's libidos and women's self-esteem.

The worst jeans-buying decision I ever made was to get a pair of Diesels for like $150. They were somewhat snug, but not tight, when I tried them on, and the salesperson assured me they wouldn't shrink much. On the tag it said not to put them in the dryer, and since I was concerned about shrinkage, I hung them out to dry. Bad idea. Once they dried there was an outline on the front of the jeans around the area where the pocket-liner was underneath - apparently that part had dried slower than the rest. It was quite noticeably a darker color than the rest. Great, I thought, I'll take them back. Not only that, but they had become considerable snugger. However, I procrastinated about it until it was too late to return them. So now I'm stuck with a worthless, ridiculously expensive pair of jeans.

The Wranglers were $25.95. I bought them at a men's workwear place in the Outer Mission. So refreshing compared to the Union Square Levi's shithole.

andy --, Wednesday, 30 November 2005 18:56 (twenty years ago)

It's not like Levis are premium priced. Levis 527s don't fit me spectacularly well, but at least they're dirt cheap. I can eat $28 for a pair of jeans I have to let the hems out on.

I just bought my first Wranglers a couple days ago - the medium blue version. I think Levis has given up on me, as I can no longer find button fly 501s in my size anywhere. Also, the Wranglers were $14.28 each (at Target), which seems low even for made-in-China jeans.

And I think SJ looks fine in those pics, white bra included.

nickn (nickn), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 19:04 (twenty years ago)

My ex had a pair of tight black jeans that I liked, but then he was sort of a rawk star & wore them w/ motorcycle boots for the full "tough guy" effect (also good for those hopelessly skinny young things who wear 'em drainpipe style with Cons but not after age, say, 25). I suppose in total I like black jeans only when dirty, faded, and generally punk rock, but think they're not suitable for any "nicer" applications.

giboyeux (skowly), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 19:45 (twenty years ago)

OK, so I wasn't shopping that hard. I was in Selfridges, Birmingham during my lunch brek from a trip to a client up there. But the JEans area was full of such nonsense.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 19:46 (twenty years ago)

I left a guy because he had bad pants once. It was the 70's. There were a lot of perks to the relationship—limitless wining, dining, sex and drugs, but the pants were SO BAD. Navy blue with one of those external welts up each leg-front, like an inside-out seam. Bias-cut polyester. I did a bunch of his coke and was out of there.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 19:48 (twenty years ago)

American Eagle jeans are pretty good about that - plain washes, no fashionable bleaching or rips.

WRANGLER, PPL.

Rustler's are good, too. Ditto Carharrt's. Basically, if I can't get them at Fleet Farm, I'm not wearing them.

giboyeux (skowly), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 19:51 (twenty years ago)

The wranglers are cool because they're brand new dark indigo, no wash or wear at all. I remember my buddy's dad telling us about jeans in the early sixties (he was a biker); you bought them and NEVER washed them, 'til they could stand up by themselves in the corner.

andy --, Wednesday, 30 November 2005 19:52 (twenty years ago)

Carharts have a wierd cut. YOu either have to have the crotch at your knees or the waistband on your nipples.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 19:54 (twenty years ago)

Well, they have a practical cut: my double-knees ride *exactly* at my waist, which is good for working in. I have to get them too big in the waist for them to ride low like my favorite jeans.

giboyeux (skowly), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 19:54 (twenty years ago)

i like the baggy look -- though my baggy look is more preppy-ish than gangsta-ish.

andy --, Wednesday, 30 November 2005 20:01 (twenty years ago)

I'm afraid my shit-kicking aunt wears those boots. But she wears Rocky Mountain jeans, not Wranglers. Now that's some shit-kicking!

I like Dickies. They also are available with no wash (dark, dark, plenty of time to fade) and you can buy them at the grocery store. convience.

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 15 September 2006 17:36 (nineteen years ago)

maybe i should have played around with the sizes more but i wasn't crazy about the washes and the 514s (28x30) are good

i really tried to buy some levi's but the butts are too saggy for my white girl ass... made my butt look frumpy. hmmph!

fellini-esque-lit-rockist (tehresa), Friday, 15 September 2006 18:00 (nineteen years ago)

levisstore.com changes their size availability every day WTF its the internet and you make jeans

im ordering 511 32X32

jon, i didnt try on 514's, but the 511's seemed righteous when i went to a 32.

Lazy Comet (plsmith), Friday, 15 September 2006 18:03 (nineteen years ago)

HAHAHAHA 28???? JESUS CHRIST YO

Lazy Comet (plsmith), Friday, 15 September 2006 18:04 (nineteen years ago)

Lazy Comet (plsmith), Friday, 15 September 2006 18:05 (nineteen years ago)

Man, I'm getting fat. I'm up to a 32 inseam, though I have to wear a belt with it.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Friday, 15 September 2006 18:06 (nineteen years ago)

i wear a 31 in 501's, but a 32 in the skinny cut

Lazy Comet (plsmith), Friday, 15 September 2006 18:07 (nineteen years ago)

also big inseam doesnt mean yr fat

Lazy Comet (plsmith), Friday, 15 September 2006 18:12 (nineteen years ago)

yeah that means yr tall, right?

fellini-esque-lit-rockist (tehresa), Friday, 15 September 2006 18:18 (nineteen years ago)

long legs, at least

Lazy Comet (plsmith), Friday, 15 September 2006 18:32 (nineteen years ago)

i'm up to a 33 these days -- and to think, that @ jon's age i was 28x30 too!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Friday, 15 September 2006 18:54 (nineteen years ago)

Oops, yeah, I meant waist. My inseam is way fatter than that.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Friday, 15 September 2006 22:24 (nineteen years ago)

this thread is not what i expected

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 15 September 2006 22:36 (nineteen years ago)

It's a shame how far Levi's have fallen since the glory days, though the LVC line is a large improvement. Most of the American public seems to love the predistressed jeans with nasty washes and fabric of dubious quality though. There is a fantastic denim store in SoHo, JW, but it isn't cheap.

ALLAH FROG (Mingus Dew), Friday, 15 September 2006 22:51 (nineteen years ago)

i'm totally stoked on levi's lately. got a pair of Reds slim straights and a pair of Capital E Stacked Skinny that i'm really digging. jon, the skinny's really are like tights, but i went up a size and they look good. it's so funny how a year ago pants of mine that i thought were soooo skinny are my baggy jeans.

jaxon (jaxon), Friday, 15 September 2006 22:53 (nineteen years ago)

slocki, gygax still works there

jaxon (jaxon), Friday, 15 September 2006 22:54 (nineteen years ago)

that is why this thread is not what i expected!

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 15 September 2006 23:04 (nineteen years ago)

i figured

jaxon (jaxon), Friday, 15 September 2006 23:06 (nineteen years ago)

earnest sewn and cheap monday on my ass

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 15 September 2006 23:06 (nineteen years ago)

i think if i was a 28 i'd be dead

katie quirk (dubplatestyle), Friday, 15 September 2006 23:12 (nineteen years ago)

i do need to find a good pair of jeans tho

katie quirk (dubplatestyle), Friday, 15 September 2006 23:12 (nineteen years ago)

Nice choice with the earnest sewn, Cutty, but YELLOW CARD for the cheap mondays.

ALLAH FROG (Mingus Dew), Friday, 15 September 2006 23:19 (nineteen years ago)

why you hating on my cheap mondays? earnest sewn harlan's are all i want to wear.

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 15 September 2006 23:29 (nineteen years ago)

i have three pairs.

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 15 September 2006 23:29 (nineteen years ago)

Joeks! Not my style, I've become a whore for high end raw denim, but rock what you like. I'd beat the hell out of the earnest sewns though, nice denim looks great once you've really got it broken in from heavy wear.

ALLAH FROG (Mingus Dew), Friday, 15 September 2006 23:51 (nineteen years ago)

i miss gygax, guys.
