I dunno how to feel about this, E, being that I'm pretty sure you were the only one to read my epic tooth post. This seems like an unfortunate concordance of events. Have I failed to entertain you?

I dont find ILX that boring, but it is a lot less amusing/silly than it used to be - I was reading some old threads last night and wondering why we dont end up with any long, funny, hilaro/messed up ones anymore. Like trucker hat, guy on my roof gonna jump, anything momus started, jinglesmith, a puppy, etc etc.

The religion thread wasn't even what prompted it, it was the "should there be a football subforum" thread - like, the amount of crankiness going on in there is way out of proportion to the actual question. Like, the amount of defensiveness and just willful misinterpretation and people being nasty and snappish over quite straightforward things is the kind of thing I would expect from a religion or politics thread.

1) this has been discussed before, but some people (myself included) have expressed discomfort with the idea that people who are essentially strangers on a messageboard are not actually *at* the level of intimacy/affection for you to be able to automatically zing and assume it's affectionate as opposed to hostile.

2) whenever I try to be all funny zingy in a lighthearted way, I frequently get people going o_0 OMG are you SERIOUS at me - maybe this is just proof that I shouldn't try to be lighthearted because I somehow don't "get" how to do it. But mostly it's more like... people can't read tone on the internet. If you don't know someone well enough to "get" when *they* are joking or not, maybe you shouldn't zing at them.

well ppl still think the board's too rough, and others think it's cuddlestein. it's an ongoing process imo and i'd favour letting em all back in again and letting sb do the rest of it but that's not gonna happen.

I think the answer is that ILX is less cranky than it was two years ago, and WAY less cranky than it was three to five years ago. Is it more cranky than it was two weeks ago? Dunno. I might not have been on many of the threads where the crankiness has been happening.

Kate I think you personally have been pretty cranky of late, and that's colouring your view of the rest of ILX. Part of that is because people have been being dicks and baiting you but also because you can be a pretty cranky person in general, even when they aren't really doing so. It's a bit chicken/egg really.

Don't really see where this is going to go other than everyone turning up to grind their usual meta axes.

I am certainly aware that I often have quite different opinions - and strong opinions - to the seeming majority of ILX, and this often puts me on the defensive. I think this often *reads* as provoking clusterfucks or something like it, but I don't think having a differing opinion or defending that opinion is *necessarily* wrong or bad or something to be avoided for the sake of artificial consensus on a messageboard. Which is what it feels like nakhchivan is implying.

Anyway, I guess that's that. If it's me that's particularly cranky I should go do something more enjoyable with the rest of the afternoon. If I can find something.

FWIW I'm pretty cranky lately and it has undoubtedly shown in my posts independent of what anyone has or hasn't done to provoke it. i think it's like how our minds are sometimes filled with self-antagonistic arrows. prob most of us have occasional bouts of self-loathing. letting that contribute out of hand to our self-definition doesn't make sense. so much more so ppl's msg board output.

Though, to be completely honest, I can never entirely shake the fear that some or indeed most people are pretty much always given the benefit of the doubt, but I very seldom get extended that same benefit, that there is always someone who has decided that I am "just a cranky person" and that the most negative or unpleasant or hateful explanation of my behaviour is the right one, and I could never just be being straightforward or playful or whatever.

But that *is* my latent paranoia, even if it does occasionally get backed up in fact.

xp see, that is what drives me crazy about you: you act like it's you vs. ilx-the-entity (which if that was true i'd wonder why you would bother posting here at all), yet any clusterfuck/thread you're involved in i ALWAYS see PLENTY of support for you!!!! even in the worst of it, ppl are backpedaling and apologising for upsetting you, or for posting things that might be misinterpreted.

Things look very different when you are on the receiving end, rather than on the watching end. I think it's human nature to feel criticism more harshly than praise.

I don't think I've seen an apology or anything outside of the girl thread, nor have I actually *expected* one, for what it's worth, so I think that assessment is actually unfair and a little harsh? But whatever. This pair of posts will just leave you feeling a little more driven crazy and me feeling more generally criticised/disliked.

Kate she never flat out said you were wrong. She was pointing out that there was a lot of support for you whenever these incidents happen which there is. For however many "enemies" you have or perceive to have here you also have tons of people behind you. I would think it would help knowing that and reminding yourself of it whenever you start to feel persecuted, no?

K@te, take a deep breath and go read justin3's post very carefully, as I just did. In it I could not detect any statement about your feelings that called you out as wrong to have them or invalideated them.

AFAICS, she:

1) made a statement about her feelings (that an aspect of you drives her crazy),
2) made a statement about your actions ("you act as if" a thing were true),
3) made a statement about what she saw to be true (those threads contain some support as well as harshness)
4) and stopped there.

See I honestly can't think of many (or any, really) other posters people go to that extent to break things down for. Fuck the haters and be thankful you have so many people that do support you. I realize that is easier said than done but it can't hurt to try!
