what do you like to sing? ballads or rockers? soul or new jack swing?

maura, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

favorite personal karaoke performances of late:

def leppard, 'photograph,' where i, inspired by anthony michael hall's turn as mutt lange, went the extra octave; van halen, 'poundcake,' mainly because of the bridge ('tried some sex without love/i found the real thing is poundcake'); golden earring, 'radar love'; and the presidents of the usa, 'lump.'

my total dud song was definitely 'come on over' by christina aguilera, in part because i hit myself in the mouth with the microphone and also in part because i can't go the extra extra octave.

maura, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

also this week at karaoke there was a man who brought puppets! he had a different puppet for every song, including a cow who sang neil diamond. (the cow was called 'veal diamond.') apparently this is not the first week he has done this. uh

maura, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I like ballads, but I like something that tells a story (Richard Marx "Hazard" is a favourite). Anything with a slightly dubious lyrics which I can use my paedophile voice on and twist into a sick, perverted song is always a favourite. "Where's The Playground Suzy" is filthy when I sing it. As was This Is Hardcore.

Pete, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My first and most successful karaoke performance was 'You Sexy Thing', which was picked for me. My biggest failure has been 'One Day I'll Fly Away'. The one I want to do is 'She's The One'.

N., Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i've only done one so far (eminem). looking forward to doing Marti Webb "Take That Look Off Your Face". Want karaoke NOW!

Alan Trewartha, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Don't you forget about me", though I feel I've done that too often now. My rendition of "Sweet Caroline" will appear very soon, once I've perfected singing along in the car.

Boys, never attempt "Take on me" unless you can arrange a swift kick in the goollies at the relevant points.

Tag, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My take on 'Man I Feel Like a Woman' has never been forgotten by those who witnessed it. Everyone wants to forget my version of 'Mirror Man'.

alext, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I did Take On Me once, and I know exactly what you mean. Second chorus round I administer self bollock tweak which did the job.

Pete, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

can't... type... laughing...

katie, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm quite bad at most things but I like songs with an easy range and not too much actual singing. My favourite to do for a long time was "One More Time" but my best evah karaoke performance I reckon was "Antmusic". I'm rarely drunk enough to do any movements. Worst idea was doing the Teletubbies, easy.

Tom, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I've never done a karaoke. I do a mean version of lots of songs in the shower though. Daft Punk Too Long is a great one, despite the repetition.

Ronan, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i wish my karaoke guy had 'this is hardcore'!

maura, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

British culture is still very lazy about ghettoising things.

N., Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh, I will never do karaoke. I know how bad my voice is. It moves beyond comically bad into the truly painful.

Even when I was I practically coerced into it by this intimidating bitch-diva friend of my then-boyfriend I just will not do it.

Nicole, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My standard karaoke song is "When Doves Cry". I was happiest when I found a place that had "Somebody", though. My best karaoke moment ever was singing back-up for my brother on "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds"; I have yet to work up the nerve to go back to that place.

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The night Dan did When Dove's Cry at the KoC I tried to follow him up (and hour or so later) with Purple Rain. There was a noticable difference in quality.

Pete, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I will sing anything that can be enhanced by my Raw London Edge (aka tone deaf flat voice) if I am drunk enough. Me and Sarah's Do You Really Like It? went down well. However my last attempt was cruelly foiled by the KoC which does not know the meaning of the phrase 'EVERY FRIDAY NIGHT' as there was no karaoke on 28 December.

Many many songs have forever been ruined / improved by hearing my friends' / other peoples' renditions.

Emma, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

With Alex T safely back in Edinburgh I'm up for a go at Perfect Gentleman by the way. Who wants to do the girl's bit?

Tom, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ooooh, my dream thread! Where do I begin?
When you become a karaoke addict, you slowly realise that you may love a song, but it doesn't love you. Like "Islands In The Stream." The trick is to go wild and try anything - you'll soon know which ones suit you to a T. Here are some of mine:
Don't Speak - No Doubt
Alone/These Dreams/What About Love - Heart
Kiss Me - Sixpence None The Richer
Heaven - Bryan Adams
Automatic - Utada Hikaru (j-pop)
Sometimes - Britney Spears
We're All Alone - Boz Scaggs
Eye In The Sky - Alan Parsons Project

Elisa K, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I will listen to Perfect Gent tonight and see how the gurl bit goes (also light a candle to the SPIRIT OF ALEX T alright maybe just have some whisky instead) and maybe I will do it. Actually this is a lie, I bet she will probably go all diva-ish and my voice will fail to work. Yes, DO YOU REALLY LIKE IT was fantastic. Perhaps I will just rock the UK-G massif. Is there any Mis-Teeq?

Sarah, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The girl bit is the rap bit Sarah i.e. I was born with the body of the goddesses / Do any of you know how hard this is / I can flex in 25 positions / But I still have to pay for my tuition. It is in other words the best bit you lucky thing. Apart from "TEN GRAND!" etc. And the ho no bits.

Tom, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Girl bit in Perfect G VERY EASY. If I recall it is half sung, half spoken, half rapped (ie peasy) and the only difficulty is getting the stress on the correct syllables. 'My name is hope yeah / I was blessed with the body of the goddesses / have you any idea how hard this is / I can flex in 25 positions / but I only work here to pay my tuition / ...' then some stuff about her and Wyclef against the odds and how they're going to where there folk ride horses / no cars.

alext, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I did "Wild Thing" at the tender age of sixteen in a small Dordogne village, where speaking English -> Rock God. I recommend it.

Sam, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I've only ever done it solo once - "Wichita Lineman" in a pub in Whitehaven in front of people I knew I'd never see again (I left for London the following week). Pam & I turned "These Boots Are Made For Walking" into the Lee'n'Nancy duet it always should've been on Berwick Street last year. I kept submitting "No Regrets" as a request at the KoC, and it never came up. My bottle's gone now.

(I'd still love to do Heaven 17's "Temptation" with a hot soul diva. I might advertise for one in the Croydon Gazette).

Michael Jones, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Okay new plans for tonight, I shall study the lyrical style and flow of GURL BIT on Perfect Gent instead of tackling the wardrobe. Phew.

Sarah, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I did the Humpty Dance once, and improvised:

"now just let me introduce myself / my name is Dare / pronounced with the 'air' / and oh ladies, you know that I am far from square"

which of course marked me as being just that.

Dare, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The first and only time I did karaoke i sang "The wheels of the truck go round and round." Off key, off tempo and I took off my pants and squirmed on the floor. I was not allowed back. Conservatives...

Gage-o, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That reminds me of the Pop Idol contender who sang 'We wish you a merry Christmas' at his audition.

N., Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nick, 'She's The One' by Roy Harper?!?!

youn, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I always do Prince's "Kiss" 'cause I can actually hit the high notes.

Douglas, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Youn, I'm so sorry, but no, Robbie Williams. Or Karl Wallinger if you think that's cooler.

N., Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I can't hit any notes, but I won a karaoke comp performing I'm gonna be (500 miles), ideal for audience participation.

Billy Dods, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I once brought the house down at a honky tonk doing "Walkin' After Midnight." I'd like to do "Treats Your Daughter Mean."

Samantha, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

is alan parsons project really AVAILABLE on k-machines?

mark s, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

re: Alan Parsons Project - yes, that song is! How do I know?

Erm...I have it on a karaoke vcd at home. ;-)

Elisa K, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

At my local karaoke haunt/bowling alley there is a regular (young and rather cute, actually). We call him Tracksuit Boy, because he always wears a shiny Adidas track suit. Tracksuit Boy only does impersonations, with slight exaggeration for effect. He does a hilarious Prince and his Neil Diamond is spot on. I can't believe how many people waste this great opportunity to do performance art.

Unfortunately, many karaoke DJs are frustrated singers who take the whole thing too seriously. I jumped up and down once during a Who song, hit my head on an overhead beam, and then the Gloria Estefan-wannabe DJ wouldn't play any of my requests for the rest of the night.

Caroline Sibley, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have never done Karaoke...if I did, I would sing:

1. Livin' On A Prayer
2. Nothings Gonna Stop Us Now
3. I Would Do Anything For Love
4. Every Rose Has Its Thorn
5. Crazy Crazy Nights
6. Mr Brownstone.

jel, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I've yet to find a karaoke machine that has 'Colony' on it.

DG, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tom:

Worst idea was doing the Teletubbies, easy.

This from the man who once did paranoid android...

My all time best, ebeneezeer goode by the shamen (with every word of the rap correct (because i'm a sad get)), although tainted love was my standard for years, recently have tried branching out, although still tend to stick to alt/indie type ones (Pretty in Pink, Maggie May, Panic (although the KoC versh is well short)). Pete's Hazard and Tag's Don't you forget about me are both top notch though...

CarsmileSteve, Wednesday, 9 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Urgent and Key

Graham, Wednesday, 9 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I've never played karaoke before, but I'd imagine my favorite pick would be "You're the best!" from the Karate Kid soundtrack.

Mandee, Wednesday, 9 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tonight Matthew, I'm going to sing 'Song 2' in the style of Dean Martin. I always put a little 'lounge' twist on everything I sing. Even 'Atrocity Exhibition': 'Forrrr entertainment (whoa yeahhh) they watch his body a-twi-itch (whoo!)' Bring on the KoC!

Will, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I would like to inform you I have been practising my hem hem 'flow' to the GURL bit in Perfect Gentleman.

Sarah, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I've only done Karaoke twice due to fears over nastiness of my singing voice, I did "last train to Clarkesville" the night I got my A-level results and "some might say" as a duet with a random stranger the last night I lived in Chesterfield. I think they were awful

chris, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Karaoke is fun I bet but is it as much fun as singing on the street on the way home?

Ronan, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

oh, I don't mind doing that, it's fun, and obviously I don't have any fears over my voice when I'm that drunk.

chris, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Last year sometime we were coming home and one of my friends said it was Jay Zs birthday and started singing happy birthday to him. A policeman came over at some point and was like "which one you is jay z".

Ronan, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Aaaaaaaahahhahahahahahaha that is GENIUS I like them police I do.

Sarah, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

one year passes...
i did "lollipop (candyman)" by aqua!

both voices!!

i wz told it was a "phenomenon"

haha the best thing wz [xXx] wz there — we haven't been in the same room for i think two years, and we between us managed total non eye-contact, BUT i sang "lollipop (candyman)" by aqua (which includes the line "i wish that i were a bubblegum"), and [xXx] sang nothing so i win utterly

(i realise it doesn't actually work like that)

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 22:44 (twenty-two years ago)

If I could find a karaoke machine with Divine Comedy songs it'd be ace, cos I've got that well mannered voice thing going ON.

Matt (Matt), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 23:01 (twenty-two years ago)

(it does work like that mark s wins)

Matt (Matt), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 23:02 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm perfecting my Phil Oakey still...and i'm still hoping to find Kid Creole listed somewhere, its all about the 80s classics basically (predictably)

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 23:21 (twenty-two years ago)

VIN DIESEL WAS AT KARAOKE WITH MARK S!!

chaki (chaki), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 23:22 (twenty-two years ago)

my repertoire:

freda payne : band of gold
neil diamond : shiloh
the box tops : the letter
astrud gilberto : girl from ipanema
cheap trick : surrender

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 23:28 (twenty-two years ago)

My "Like a Rolling Stone" is tops, plus I'm the only person at any given karaoke bar/booth who knows ALL the words by heart and is aware of how they fit into the rhythm of the song.

I'm no fun to do karaoke with. People have told me this. No one ever wants to follow my triumphant performances with their off-key drunken mushmouthed bleating.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 23:42 (twenty-two years ago)

ok the downside of karaoke is that you are still unconsciously singing the song seven days later ALL THE TIME

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 8 May 2003 08:44 (twenty-two years ago)

My 'Hound Dog' is just about passable.

If I'm too inebriated I've been known to attempt 'American Trilogy' - always a big mistake.

James Ball (James Ball), Thursday, 8 May 2003 09:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I've done:

Take That - Back for Good
Queen - Don't Stop me Now
Queen - Killer Queen
Queen - I Want to Break Free
Frankie Vallie & the Four Seasons - Sherry
A-Ha - Take on Me
Pogues - Fairytale of New York (with Ally C)
Snoop Doggy Dogg - Who am I (What's my Name)
Sugababes - Freak Like Me
Britney Spears - Baby One More Time
Chicago - Hard to Say I'm Sorry
Eminem - Lose Yourself
Lionel Richie - Hello
Spice Girls - 2 Become 1
Manic Street Preachers - A Design for Life
Patsy Cline - Crazy

...and many more! (probably)

Mark C (Mark C), Thursday, 8 May 2003 09:46 (twenty-two years ago)

http://www.cnn.com/2003/US/Northeast/10/31/offbeat.naked.ap/

Make sure you're properly (un)dressed for your performance! "Wow, he really needs to learn the words to verse two, AND do a few sit-ups!"

Skottie, Saturday, 1 November 2003 07:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Once again, "offbeat" does not equal "beat off"

Skottie, Saturday, 1 November 2003 07:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I always do the same old shit-

"Paranoid", "Boys Are Back In Town", "Thong Song", and "Fill Me In".

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Saturday, 1 November 2003 07:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Always, "word up" because I like to say "yaoooo"

Skottie, Saturday, 1 November 2003 07:41 (twenty-two years ago)

If there was a karoake wiffin reach I would karayooke Michael Jackson's "Rock WIth You".

Fuck it, I'ma' do it anyway.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Saturday, 1 November 2003 08:09 (twenty-two years ago)

eleven months pass...
I stick to anything produced by Mutt Lange...Photograph, Armegeddon It, You Shook me, Waiting for a Girl Like you.

57 7th (calstars), Friday, 1 October 2004 17:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, 'Head Over Heels' is always a good choice.

57 7th (calstars), Friday, 1 October 2004 17:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Adina Howard - "Freak Like Me"
Roxy Music - "Love is the Drug"

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 1 October 2004 17:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I usually go with the big, dumb modern rock radio anthems...

"Semi-Charmed Life" - Third Eye Blind
"Swing, Swing" - The All-American Rejects
"Sucked Out" - Superdrag (the DJ at a karaoke night I used to frequent actually had this)
"Follow Me" - Uncle Kracker
"Right Now" - SR-71
"Girl All The Bad Guys Want" - Bowling For Soup

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Friday, 1 October 2004 17:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, I do an amazing Steve Perry falsetto impression, so "Don't Stop Believin'" is usually a crowd pleaser.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 1 October 2004 17:51 (twenty-one years ago)

"House of Rising Sun" - The Animals
"The Joker" - Steve Miller Band
"Summertime" - Janis Joplin
"50 Ways to Leave Your Lover" - Paul Simon
"Rebel Yell" - Billy Idol

Laura E (laurae55), Friday, 1 October 2004 18:07 (twenty-one years ago)

"i'm not in love" - 10cc
"take my breath away" - berlin
"leader of the pack" shangri-las
"what's going on" marvin gaye
"are you that somebody" aaliyah
"relax" - frankie goes to hollywood

these are the songs i did do last weekend at karaoke

firstworldman (firstworldman), Friday, 1 October 2004 19:01 (twenty-one years ago)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 1 October 2004 19:09 (twenty-one years ago)

My specialty number is "Brandy" by Looking Glass, preferably with audience participation on the backing vocals.

k/l (Ken L), Thursday, 14 July 2005 20:32 (twenty years ago)

God I love a good ballad. Sadly, they don't go over nearly as well with crowd. Philistines ::sniff::

I've done well with:
"Keep On Lovin' You"
"Wild Horses"
"Angel From Montgomery"
"Feel Like Makin' Love"

There was a, er, KJ, who used to set up at my local who had "Tuesday's Gone." I live to find that again.

Also, why does every karaoke bar have "Love is the Drug" and "Virgina Plain" but no other Roxy? Very sad...

rogermexico (rogermexico), Thursday, 14 July 2005 21:00 (twenty years ago)

I can only really do Tom Waits or Eels songs. Which is a bit of a downer on a karaoke night, admittedly.

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Thursday, 14 July 2005 21:02 (twenty years ago)

But how cool is your karaoke joint to have Tom Waits and Eels!

rogermexico (rogermexico), Thursday, 14 July 2005 21:05 (twenty years ago)

Well, when I said "karaoke", I actually meant "me singing to a bunch of people who probably don't really want to hear it"

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Thursday, 14 July 2005 21:07 (twenty years ago)

There used to be a Japanese place in NYC called Candy B-1, where the Decibel sake bar now is, which did karaoke with a live band instead of backing tracks. It really added a lot.

k/l (Ken L), Thursday, 14 July 2005 21:08 (twenty years ago)

I think there was a place which had an eels track though...

xpost to myself

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Thursday, 14 July 2005 21:11 (twenty years ago)

Next on my Must Try list:
Badfinger, "Day After Day" or "Baby Blue" (even though the too-specific lyric makes that one weird...
Joe Jackson, "Breaking Us In Two"

rogermexico (rogermexico), Thursday, 14 July 2005 21:18 (twenty years ago)

Ghostbusters

Baby One More Time

Get Into the Groove

rainy (rainy), Thursday, 14 July 2005 21:27 (twenty years ago)

I fall back on 'Hey Jude' cos I sing it well and it's kind of a showstopper but it's pretty boring to sing. Last time I sang "Another Saturday Night" by Sam Cooke(ON A SATURDAY NIGHT OMG!), it was well recieved but the plinky midi arrangement made it sound like some fucking calypso castoff, I wasn't pleased. I've been half-practicing Luther's "Here and Now" but I'm probably going to chicken out, that shit is hard.

tremendoid (tremendoid), Thursday, 14 July 2005 22:30 (twenty years ago)

reo speedwagon : keep on loving you
tracy chapman : fast car
burt bacharach : i'll never fall in love again
otis redding : these arms of mine

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 14 July 2005 22:36 (twenty years ago)

I haven't done karaoke in ages, but at the only-slightly-creepy neighbourhood bar karaoke night I've been known to stick to:
Guns and Roses - Sweet Child O' Mine / Welcome to the Jungle
The Foundations - Build Me Up Buttercup (this is totally fun to do and I highly recommend it despite American Idol cheese factor 10)
Rick Astley - Never Gonna Give You Up
backup vocals on The Kinks - You Really Got Me, among others

A friend did Cheap Trick's Surrender last night at Kiss-me-oke and it was fantastic. I may have to get drunk enough to attempt it sometime. If any karaoke bar ever has Fleetwood Mac Secondhand News, I'm doing it, but this has yet to happen. But mark my words!

Ain't "Keep On Loving You" teh sweet? It always brings me joy to catch the change on the second "and I meant, every word i said etc..."

Such a shame it's only two verses...

Boys, never attempt "Take on me" unless you can arrange a swift kick in the goollies at the relevant points.

Went for an all-90s night at karaoke last week.

Matchbox 20 - Push
Indigo Girls - Closer to Fine
Counting Crows - Long December

People went nuts for all three. I think the potential for mining 90's radio rock nostalgia among 20-somethings has gone relatively unnoticed at least at karaoke. In the same vein, the all-time biggest response I've ever gotten at karaoke was for 4 Non Blondes - What's Up (What's Going On).

I do a lot of rap, like T.I.'s Dead and Gone, and have also done Nas's "If I Ruled the World" several times. like to also do stuff like Kool and the Gang's "Too Hot", Barry White's "Practice What You Preach", and "Razzle Dazzle" from Chicago.

i'm a semi-professional singer (in that some of my gigs unpaid, some paid), so like I also do at rehearsals for performances, sometimes I tape performances to see what I can improve on in the future. last night I sang "Father Figure" and did that but the Blackberry was next to this obnoxious guy who was singing along. I got to the riff at the end ("I will be youuuuuuuuuuuurs, FATHERRRRRRRRRRRR, I'll be your daddy, oh"), and on the recording you hear the guy go "HE GOT IT!". made me lol.

"Candy Everybody Wants" - 10,000 Maniacs
"Crush On You" - The Jets (have 0 recollection of actually doing this, btw)
"Let The Music Play" - Shannon

the last two were duets with donna rouge, who saved me from looking like a COMPLETE fool.

Wow. Any tips, nuggets, anecdotes to share?

Jean Arthur Rank (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 9 September 2022 20:23 (three years ago)

ama

do you have any songs that, when they come up, you know it's going to be bad (or good)

Karl Malone, Friday, 9 September 2022 20:32 (three years ago)

ama?

Jean Arthur Rank (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 9 September 2022 20:33 (three years ago)

sure!

nobody in the audience is impressed by the depths of your music knowledge and they generally won't respond to songs they don't know, so pick the hits (or if you want deeper cuts, pick cuts that people at least know but nobody thinks to sing?), however this does not mean you should just sing sweet caroline and bohemian rhapsody. be creative but don't try to shut people out by doing shit nobody's ever heard of before. *this is easily circumvented if you are with a group of friends who all know the song(s) and will be into it.

energy is nearly as valuable as talent. if you can't sing nobody will care if you're having a good time and bringing something to the table, even if it's just that you're having fun up there. people like effort!

don't bother the kj about where you are in line more than once. if it's me, i will be petty and start bumping you down the list every time you ask after the first time. also tip your kj as they don't get paid much and are working for tips!

learn how to use a microphone!!!!! a lot of people don't know that it is not a magical stick that merely needs to be held in the hands. also if you can learn to project your voice like a frickin singer you are an angel and i adore you!

don't put your friends up for songs they don't know & etc. this sucks and just leads to embarrassment and i hate when someone sheepishly quits mid-song. like most things, karaoke is better with consent!

no heckling the singers! i have strict no heckling rules and i enforce them with an iron fist!

if you are in town come to my karaoke night and say hi to me and let's hang out i am fun

Clay, Friday, 9 September 2022 20:39 (three years ago)

My neighborhood watering hole 💦 🕳 has now extended their karaoke to seven nights a week, which is kind of interesting. Lots of recent Spanish language pop songs, most of which I am unfamiliar with but still enjoy listening to. Sometimes songs get entered into the queue but nobody seems to know who entered them so someone has to volunteer to perform them. Radiohead’s “Creep” seems to pop up every night in this fashion, at least when I have been there, last time it happened I stepped up to sing it since it would be another 45 minutes until my selection came up.
(xp)

Jean Arthur Rank (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 9 September 2022 20:41 (three years ago)

Wow, I really like your approach, thanks.

Jean Arthur Rank (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 9 September 2022 20:41 (three years ago)

Ha, “Bohemian Rhapsody” was another abandoned pick, so one guy who is a pretty good singer but a baritone stepped it to sing some of it in a lower octave and the rest of us including me tried to pitch in just to get through it.

Jean Arthur Rank (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 9 September 2022 20:44 (three years ago)

do you have any songs that, when they come up, you know it's going to be bad (or good)

oh man yes? it's so situational though. most of the stuff that i groan at is when people pick the really obvious stuff, song after song, or go for songs that they are doing "ironically". i'd rather see people sing songs they genuinely like as that leads to better performances and sometimes honest emotion on stage. i have a whole thing about karaoke and public catharsis. you're not going to get there with "boom boom pow".

i love to be surprised, in the main. "You? doing that? wow. okay! we'll see how that goes!" is probably my favorite reaction to anyone putting a song in. the absolute worst shit is when a drunk dude late at night wants to do "tears in heaven" or johnny cash's version of "hurt" or whatever. like folks, this is supposed to be a party, come on.

Clay, Friday, 9 September 2022 20:46 (three years ago)

Another ghost selection was “Hey Jude.” This was made worse by the fact that we couldn’t see the lyrics for some reason. It just seemed to go on for ever, feels like it is exhibit A if a hit that should be avoided by most at karaoke night. Truth be told even when listening to the recorded version I am sometimes looking at my watch waiting for Ringo to come back from his bathroom break.

Jean Arthur Rank (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 9 September 2022 20:48 (three years ago)

karl btw i love your picks and want to have a spingsteen off with you some night! i sang electrolite a few months ago when i got terrible news from a doctor (turned out the doc was wrong but that was still a tough weekend and i had to get some thoughts about life/death outta my system) and absolutely no one had any idea what the song was, but fuck 'em, had to say my peace about not being scared into a microphone you know

Clay, Friday, 9 September 2022 20:50 (three years ago)

i have attempted to dissuade more than one person over the years from doing hey jude. "you realize this is going to devolve into you saying na nananana nananana for about five minutes, right?" they still always end up doing it. the smart ones bow out with a couple minutes to go

Clay, Friday, 9 September 2022 20:52 (three years ago)

Feel like maybe even somebody put that in just to mess.

Jean Arthur Rank (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 9 September 2022 21:29 (three years ago)

Agree that people should basically like the song they are singing and try to sing it as well as they can without worrying about being perfect, even if there is some comedy element to their performance- “doesn’t the original singer have some weird elements to their style?” or “I can’t sing this as well as I’d like so I’ll throw some attitude on it and some funny stuff” - without doing the ironic ironing thing. The Replacements kind of did it right, but most do it wrong.

Jean Arthur Rank (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 9 September 2022 21:48 (three years ago)

When people sing too well and too close to the original that can be another problem in The Uncanny Valley.

Jean Arthur Rank (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 9 September 2022 21:49 (three years ago)

One older guy sang “My Way” pretty impressively, but there is still a part of me that remains unimpressed.

karl btw i love your picks and want to have a spingsteen off with you some night!

my other bruce material is Brilliant Disguise, but I also have been thinking about Thunder Road. it's down there deep in my links, and in the parentheses i put "hard mode" because it seems like one where you have to walk in ready to go

Karl Malone, Friday, 9 September 2022 22:15 (three years ago)

"dancing in the dark" is one of my karaoke standards bc i can sing with joy and conviction and dance at the same time

i love to be surprised, in the main. "You? doing that? wow. okay! we'll see how that goes!" is probably my favorite reaction to anyone putting a song in.

Is there an Iggy Pop song people recommend? Thinking “Lust for Life” or “The Passenger” but then those are kind of repetitive.

Jean Arthur Rank (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 10 September 2022 00:17 (three years ago)

passenger's a bit one-note. lust for life is a big energy song, probably great for karaoke! some weird sin might be good? i think passenger & lust for life are the only solo iggy's we have at my joint.

lachera - i also do dancing in the dark, i've done it a million times now going back to my early 20s. just one of my favorite go-tos. gotta be bruce's best yeller

one time I went to a karaoke night (hosted by my recently departed friend, DJ Di), and this woman got up on stage, sang through an entire song, and as it ended, said "that was the wrong song", accusing her friend of signing her up for the wrong one after she'd already sang it. Di, never amused by foolishness, said "You're bringing that up now?" and the woman then said her dog just died and screamed "I HATE YOU! I HATE YOU ALL!" on the mic.

Di then told me "her dog has died every week at karaoke night for five years now", as this person was apparently a regular.

Next question for clay: do people ever attempt proper two part harmony and if so how often do they succeed?

Jean Arthur Rank (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 10 September 2022 23:26 (three years ago)

i have to say, last night we ended (in a friend's basement -- not in public) on a lovely 3-person rendition of End of the Road. I was the voice-over guy midway through the song who understands that his partner has cheated on him but is actually totally fine with that if she wants to come back, but also hurt, and then joined in on some of the harmonies in the chorus

Karl Malone, Saturday, 10 September 2022 23:33 (three years ago)

I did a nice (for me) version of Electrolite and was told by a friend that it was his favorite "TBD karaoke song" now, so that felt nice. I love that song and yet it's not in my top 25 REM songs. it's really fun to sing. Golden Years was a strange mix of pretty good and disastrous. I really thought I could do the squeaky-high "angel!" parts, but no, I cannot, not reliably. Cate Le Bon went ok but I couldn't figure out which octave I was in. I wouldn't do that one in public because it's indie schmindie, but I was with friends so fuck it.

Wrecking Ball was a good one. again, wouldn't do in public, and wouldn't even do for most friends, but it was late in the night and we were at "singing karaoke while laying on the couch" mode, so it was getting quiet and it was ok, I think

Karl Malone, Saturday, 10 September 2022 23:37 (three years ago)

my goto is Lita Ford’s “Kiss Me Deadly” and Stevie Nicks’ “Stand Back”

i hate when ppl pick a song that they just know the name of but haven’t heard in 20 years and are awkwardly stunned when they’re still struggling through American Pie after 4 minutes

also will never forget going to karaoke the night after Prince died and watching this super drunk intense dude do “Erotic City” while trying to make eye contact with women in the room ughhhhhhh it was so creepy lol

Mr Haaland's Opus (Neanderthal), Sunday, 11 September 2022 02:24 (three years ago)

Karaoke creeps are the worst.

I had some drunk guy once approach the stage while I was singing, then climb on the stage and try to hug me.

He tripped and fell and ate it and I just moved to the side and didn't help him up.

(I have a thing about personal space and had he not ate it, I would have moved away quickly)

Jean Arthur Rank (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 12 September 2022 01:49 (three years ago)

I don't generally like to do things out of my range or lower the key. even if it's just like 15 seconds of the song. which is why I've never done Richard Marx's "Hazard", despite wanting to.

besides sounding bad, main reason was I did most of my karaoking when I was performing a lot more and I didn't want to damage my voice and explain to the director the reason was "I totally thought I could sing Everything She Wants at karaoke and I was wrong"

Mr Haaland's Opus (Neanderthal), Monday, 12 September 2022 01:55 (three years ago)

Clay do you ban any songs?

Di used to ban "Picture" by Sheryl Crow and Kid Rock because she believed if you liked this song that you had no taste.

Mr Haaland's Opus (Neanderthal), Monday, 12 September 2022 01:56 (three years ago)

actually TWO hosts in town banned that one at around the same time.

Mr Haaland's Opus (Neanderthal), Monday, 12 September 2022 01:56 (three years ago)

Can you lower the key? Seems fixed from what I have encountered.

Jean Arthur Rank (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 12 September 2022 01:58 (three years ago)

I don't think with all hosts, but Di and my friend Craig had mechanisms on their machines that allowed lowering the key a few steps.

every time I sing "Down in a Hole" with Craig he always lowers one half step for me

Mr Haaland's Opus (Neanderthal), Monday, 12 September 2022 02:00 (three years ago)

Clay do you ban any songs?

overtly racist stuff ("colt 45" has been requested a lot lately, idk if it went big on tik tok or something, and i've just had to be like yeah uh i don't have that one sorry. it's just gross), songs that feature the word "rape" in them, stuff like that, idk, i don't want anyone getting hella triggered because of karaoke of all things. it's supposed to be fun!

back when weezer's version of "africa" was blowing up i actually banned the toto version because it's impossible to sing well and it was getting performed horribly like twice a night and i couldn't stand it anymore. if i could ban "picture" i'd be a happier person but i'd be out of a job, people live for that trash. still not sure i've ever heard the original.

sometimes i consider adding on a required charge/tip for certain songs. just, like, you want to sing "summer nights"? "bohemian rhapsody"? "baby got back"? "fergilicious"? "picture"? "need you now"? "shallow"? that's $10 up front. sorry i just work here.

Clay, Monday, 12 September 2022 02:08 (three years ago)

the software i use is kinda janky for karaoke tbh and i can only change the key by a half or one step. really the only people who care about this are total diva singers who love to drunkenly tell you about the time they auditioned for american idol and are constantly going off mic to yell at me like "MORE REVERB" etc, like c'mon have some chill about it.

otoh i've actually been enjoying the "audio engineering" side of things lately and spend more time eq'ing the board for individual singers and changing fx based on what's appropriate for the song and stuff. it's made me better at listening, if nothing else!

Clay, Monday, 12 September 2022 02:12 (three years ago)

Ha, is "Fergilicious" some kind of karaoke favorite? I can see why but can also see why you wouldn't want to hear it.

Jean Arthur Rank (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 12 September 2022 02:22 (three years ago)

They are understaffed tonight and may not do the karaoke 🎤 tonight. They are awaiting a ruling from the boss so I may not get to debut my new version of [NAME REDACTED].

Jean Arthur Rank (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 12 September 2022 03:14 (three years ago)

IMO do it anyway, a capella

Mr Haaland's Opus (Neanderthal), Monday, 12 September 2022 03:16 (three years ago)

Thanks for the suggestion. Talking to all the young folks that have started working here in recent years with whom I am unfamiliar. Young Folks? Hmm.

Jean Arthur Rank (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 12 September 2022 03:28 (three years ago)

Think like Spanish language records used to have the type of dance or form that went with each song- bolero, cha-cha-cha, danzon, etc.- maybe the karaoke box should have vocal ranges listed: soprano, mezzo, tenor, countertenor, lyric baritone, heldenbaritone usw.

Jean Arthur Rank (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 12 September 2022 03:33 (three years ago)

Also wondering if doing “Rock Lobster” is on the far side of the thin line between clever and stupid or not.

Jean Arthur Rank (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 12 September 2022 04:24 (three years ago)

Being able to go down 2 keys has changed the game for me!

kurt schwitterz, Monday, 12 September 2022 04:34 (three years ago)

A number of songs mentioned here I'd sure love to see in the Lucky Voice catalogue but never will

I keep wanting to do Yello's 'The Race' but forgetting. I only 'sing' in private rooms with friends tho.

my actual go-to at k nights, but it's lost its luster after Di passed away :(

all Bee Gees is fun actually. like "Jive Talking", "Staying Alive","Nights on Broadway", "I Started a Joke", so many styles you can play w/. maybe the best karaoke song to sing really.

Based upon my research the only Roy Orbison tune I can sing the high note on is “Blue Bayou,” although maybe I could stretch a half step for “You Got It.”

Misirlou Sunset (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 3 October 2022 16:28 (three years ago)

lol "You Got It" is def the only one I could even come close to attempt and it would require some falsettoing

stank viola (Neanderthal), Monday, 3 October 2022 16:36 (three years ago)

I substitute hosted karaoke several times, a few years ago

Gained a serious new appreciation for emo and pop-punk

I will typically sing “Love Is A Stranger”, “It’s Oh So Quiet” and “Head Like A Hole”. If I want to show off I do a perfect Colm Wilkinson impression on “Music Of The Night”

After about a month long layoff I went back to try out “Pancho and Lefty” along with “How Bizarre.”

Ppl still do karaoke? Sounds fun tbh

jaymc, Tuesday, 18 October 2022 14:35 (three years ago)

Still fun as long as it’s easy enough access.

We Have Never Been Secondary Modern (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 18 October 2022 15:28 (three years ago)

I was happy enough with my "Pancho and Lefty" and my "How Bizarre" was okay but I kind of wished my audience knew the tune well enough to provide backing vocals.

We Have Never Been Secondary Modern (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 18 October 2022 15:36 (three years ago)

I think I may have mentioned that sometimes songs get “orphaned” in the sense that for some reason they are selected but nobody gets up to sing them so somebody else has to self-volunteer. This happened a few times with Radiohead’s “Creep,” as I have said. I did it once which was sort of fun but I couldn’t really sing the high “run, run, run” part. I just was reminded that the same recently happened with “Wonderwall.” Feel like I was relatively accurately able to do the Liam snarl but, much to my surprise, as I always thought of this as one of the few Oasis songs I actually liked, there was no joy in it. Guess the only part I ever really like in the song is the “I Am the Walrus”-like cello.

We Have Never Been In Precise Modern Lovers Order (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 20 October 2022 17:39 (three years ago)

god, one time that happened to me with creep -- it was orphaned and it was late and people were like zach come on, you love radiohead. god i fucked up the high part soooooo badly, and i looked out and people were just kind of wandering off and trying to move on, it was horrible. meanwhile i'm feeling "what the hell am i doing here?" more than ever, oof

Karl Malone, Thursday, 20 October 2022 17:44 (three years ago)

― jaymc,

My last COVID-era hesitation. I broke down three weeks ago. Song: Paramore's "Ain't It Fun."

Malevolent Arugula (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 20 October 2022 17:49 (three years ago)

Tonight I ventured into foreign language territory and it went over pretty well.

Capital Radio Sweetheart (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 28 October 2022 05:14 (three years ago)

Whats orphaned mean? Like, someone selcts it and then fucks off home before they get their go?

I've done karaoke exactly once, as a duet, of "dont you want me" by the Human League. The guy I sang with sang "don't chew on me baby" and I couldn't finish the song because I was cracking up laughing too much.

I would love to see someone do "Bump" by Spank Rock without asphyxiating during the fast raps.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Friday, 28 October 2022 08:52 (three years ago)

That's what I mean by orphaned, yes.

Capital Radio Sweetheart (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 28 October 2022 12:46 (three years ago)

I do Slow Jamz by Twista. I guess I won't anymore cos of the Ye intro, but it took me a month of practicing to get Twista's part down

stank viola (Neanderthal), Friday, 28 October 2022 13:47 (three years ago)

I’m gonna add The Safety Dance into my rep; much less annoying outro than Word Up!

castanuts (DJP), Friday, 28 October 2022 13:49 (three years ago)

Cool. I have been thinking of doing "Walk on the Wild Side," but feel like that kind of sprechgesang list song will end up being pretty boring so then thought it might be a good idea to interpolate some of "Can I Kick It?" but ultimately concluded it still might not be worth it.

Capital Radio Sweetheart (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 28 October 2022 14:13 (three years ago)

if something is “orphaned” when I’m working I just skip it and move onto the next person’s song, idk why anyone has to sing someone else’s song unless it’s some kinda running gag

Clay, Friday, 28 October 2022 21:49 (three years ago)

Feel like the "Creep" thing was indeed some kind of running gag for a while.

Regex Dwight (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 28 October 2022 21:50 (three years ago)

Your Song?

castanuts (DJP), Wednesday, 2 November 2022 13:48 (three years ago)

Your Song is perfect, sits right in a comfy range, and the "I HOPE you don't mind" at the end isn't too bad.

I do "I Guess That's Why They Call It the Blues" as well, that one sits pretty comfy for a baritone.

"I Don't Wanna Go On With You Like That" , but that one's Alfred's (sorry I don't make the rules)

stank viola (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 2 November 2022 13:53 (three years ago)

i think i sang "I'm Still Standing" once and it was fun but it def has a high note

Piggy Lepton (La Lechera), Wednesday, 2 November 2022 14:31 (three years ago)

I tried "Healing Hands" once, that was a mistake

stank viola (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 2 November 2022 14:33 (three years ago)

Thanks. Was thinking about “Your Song.” In all these years I’ve never decided how I felt about the lyric: is it a good lyric, is it an okay lyric, is it a cheesy lyric but after all it’s Bernie Taupin so what can you do, in fact it’s so bad it’s good, par for the course.

(We're Not) The Experimental Jet Set (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 2 November 2022 14:36 (three years ago)

I experimented with “Rocket Man” the other day whilst walking around, no way I can make that high Bflat.

(We're Not) The Experimental Jet Set (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 2 November 2022 14:37 (three years ago)

Speaking of comfy baritone, I have been thinking of doing the “The Passenger” but I don’t know, seems like it’s maybe got that “Hey Jude” thing, five minutes of going “La la la la.”

(We're Not) The Experimental Jet Set (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 2 November 2022 14:46 (three years ago)

Sir Elton totally lowered the high notes after his surgery.

stank viola (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 2 November 2022 17:01 (three years ago)

no, i just feel like sometimes the night is right and it's time to do thunder road! i always cheer when someone does it

Karl Malone, Friday, 11 November 2022 06:30 (three years ago)

Is it done a lot? And you have enjoyed listening to it? It seems to be the kind of song with a lot of drama and not too many pre-op “Rocket Man” high notes to derail that would work in karaoke.

Me and the Major on the Moon (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 11 November 2022 06:33 (three years ago)

damn the kj needs to get control and institute a fair cycle, you can't just let one person eat up the whole night that is super uncool xps

Me and the Major on the Moon (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 11 November 2022 06:34 (three years ago)

Which I actually thought about a while back and then thought better of

Me and the Major on the Moon (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 11 November 2022 06:34 (three years ago)

no one ever does thunder road, so i've only cheered for it twice. i have it deep down in my "potential karaoke songs" list, but it says "(hard mode)" because there is a potential for great disaster

Karl Malone, Friday, 11 November 2022 06:37 (three years ago)

I have this general idea that the performance more than two or three karaoke numbers per person in one night is not only unseemly but that doing so will put on display cracks in technique and variability of energy that reveal one to not be a *real* singer.

Me and the Major on the Moon (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 11 November 2022 06:38 (three years ago)

I feel like TR might be doable because errors the more challenging moments might be safely covered up with some kind of simplistic bar room razzle dazzle.

i had a regular sing 16 songs in a row in about 90 minutes one night when it was pretty dead. i started counting early on because i just knew that's what he would do. pretty much all sappy lovestruck country from the 90s too, it was a rotten night

Clay, Friday, 11 November 2022 06:41 (three years ago)

In this place the kj basically just sets up a YouTube playlist.

Me and the Major on the Moon (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 11 November 2022 06:42 (three years ago)

16 songs, jfc, that's more than i want to hear from a legendary rock band

buddy you and me both

Clay, Friday, 11 November 2022 06:43 (three years ago)

i've never seen the stones or springsteen but in ideally they would play 10 kickass songs, 2 for the encore and the whole show is $25

Karl Malone, Friday, 11 November 2022 06:44 (three years ago)

have a distinct memory of an acquaintance doing “thunder road” at karaoke years ago and just slaying it, like an all-time best karaoke performance. that era of springsteen is hard to pull off well at karaoke imho! props to anyone who does a halfway decent job of it

donna rouge, Friday, 11 November 2022 06:45 (three years ago)

I feel like that lovesick sappy country karaoke is probably a common thing. I have definitely seen it before. In my experience it really goes into some kind of uncanny valley territory where, on the one hand, while they may basically sing the melody in tune and in time, some underlying layer of showmanship is conspicuously absent.

Me and the Major on the Moon (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 11 November 2022 06:46 (three years ago)

Before I sign off for the evening I would like to reiterate that I believe that the one song we have been discussing is actually quite manageable but don’t want to jinx myself by going on about it too much since I myself will not be able to test this theory out right away or possibly for another solstice or two.

Me and the Major on the Moon (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 11 November 2022 07:11 (three years ago)

In the cold light of day slightly ruing the fact that I used up my one shot on something as easy if crowd pleasing as “Ring of Fire.” I know, I know you are all thinking, “Easy, you say? What about that foreshortened bar in the middle?”

Fash Gordon (Neanderthal), Monday, 14 November 2022 03:13 (three years ago)

Finally tried “You Got It” to get it out of my system. I had been there for an earlier musical performance but hung on as my friends left while the karaoke witching hour slowly approached. When it started I chased down the would-be kj who had overlooked me earlier whilst making his rounds so I was twentieth-something in the queue, after a lot of reggaeton I was unfamiliar with. This song, like many, has easy parts and hard parts. The regular part is not too hard to do, the only thing you’ve got to nail is “baby,” which I sort of did tolerably but wasn’t happy with. The really hard part is a bunch of high “alls” that I can’t really hit anyway, which was exacerbated by the especially off brand YouTube video the guy had chosen to accompany me. Those “alls” are especially hard to hit because they are like a vertical ascent, not like the top of a melody. Anyway maybe nobody cared about that part but me, especially since most were waiting to get back to the reggaeton anyway.

Me and the Major on the Moon (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 14 November 2022 05:50 (three years ago)

I think if I try another one by Roy Orbison it will be “Blue Bayou” or more likely his take on “Love Hurts.”

Me and the Major on the Moon (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 14 November 2022 05:56 (three years ago)

Or just do “Handle With Care” and sing all the parts in character.

Me and the Major on the Moon (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 14 November 2022 05:57 (three years ago)

You Got It is one I've been meaning to try.

Lol the backing track wasn't a MIDI file was it?

Fash Gordon (Neanderthal), Monday, 14 November 2022 12:52 (three years ago)

No, it was a youtube video. But some are better than others at cuing you and filling up spaces in between vocals. Hoping you'll try it soon and let me know how it goes hitting that A for "all."

Me and the Major on the Moon (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 14 November 2022 13:00 (three years ago)

Just talked to the owner about his imminent karaoke kutbacks so it won’t be seven days a week. Which might actually work out fine for me since it will be more klearly koncentrated on nights that I can even think about staying up that late.

Meet Me in the Z'Ha'Dum (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 18 November 2022 13:57 (three years ago)

i still haven't done 'thunder road' but i'm worried that i will inadvertently air drum to the big fill after the last line, because you _have_ to do that

Karl Malone, Friday, 18 November 2022 16:47 (three years ago)

I just sat back down and waited for it to finish. Which was kind of nice, since a lot of tunes have some kind of two minute musical interlude at the back part and then you have to remember to sing something again at the very end.

Meet Me in the Z'Ha'Dum (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 18 November 2022 16:51 (three years ago)

Did the dress sway or wave

Fash Gordon (Neanderthal), Friday, 18 November 2022 16:55 (three years ago)

Ha! This time it waved, but I often see "sway" as well. I always heard the first one so I prefer it. I guess "sways" rhymes better with "plays" but maybe it's too on the nose so I still prefer the other.

Meet Me in the Z'Ha'Dum (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 18 November 2022 16:58 (three years ago)

Here's my one unsolicited amateur tip: that tune has a metric ton of lyrics, so best to familiarize yourself with all of them to the extent possible so you have some ability to know the nuances of each little part otherwise it will be the klassic karoake reading a list of words performance and you won't get the ebb and flow.

Meet Me in the Z'Ha'Dum (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 18 November 2022 17:01 (three years ago)

my years long preparation is starting to backfire, because now i'm listening to the early version of thunder road when it was called "wings for wheels", and entire verses are switched out for other lines that have very similar themes.

i suppose i can get around this by loudly announcing "i'm doing the WINGS FOR WHEELS version of thunder road tonight, friends and strangers!" before i sing it. the crowd will love that

Karl Malone, Friday, 18 November 2022 17:13 (three years ago)

So the owner originally told me that he was stopping the midnight karaoke on weekends meaning Friday, Saturday and Sunday to let the live music go later while putting in an open mic on Tuesday, but yesterday he said he was going to extend the open mic to more nights so going forward karaoke will only be on Thursday. Which is fine with me since that is the best night for me anyway. Just kind of glad that I did my little karaoke krash kourse while I could.

Josefa, Monday, 20 March 2023 01:33 (two years ago)

I just can’t stomach karaoke videos which are just the original track with the vocal vaguely filtered.

Bringing Up Initials B.B. (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 22 March 2023 16:15 (two years ago)

might not be legal for a KJ to use those tracks either, depending on their source.

I didn't realize until a few of my KJ friends told me that KJs are expected to have 100% licensed tracks, and that enforcers for various copyright organizations often do inspections and that the KJs could be sued. my KJ friend got sued, for tracks she had legally purchased, but I guess the company that owned the license got acquired and the new company wanted her to repurchase them, so she tried to just remove them from her catalog, but they actually still sued her for a ridiculous amount of money (six figures), and she had to take a settlement that crippled her financially (this is the same KJ friend who passed away last year).

playing youtube karaoke videos that are clearly just someone who used one of those vocal remove devices on a track may not be legal, though apparently all tracks from Karafun are fair game.

one of the karaoke bars my KJ friend Di worked that, that fired her, her replacement KJs had tracks that were literal MIDI files. i was mortified singing Judas Priest over that.

hootenanny-soundtracking clusterfucks about milking cows (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 22 March 2023 16:23 (two years ago)

the practical problem with singing over the remnants of a vocal is that you can be easily influenced by that vocal, esp if you're trying to do your own thing and make the song your own, but you hear that muffled vocal and feel like you have to match it.

hootenanny-soundtracking clusterfucks about milking cows (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 22 March 2023 16:29 (two years ago)

It even makes it bad if you are trying your best to match the original!

Bringing Up Initials B.B. (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 22 March 2023 16:44 (two years ago)

For similar reasons actually

Bringing Up Initials B.B. (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 22 March 2023 16:45 (two years ago)

Lots of KaraFun’s seem to have guide vocals but they are very low so are kind of easy to ignore.

Bringing Up Initials B.B. (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 22 March 2023 16:47 (two years ago)

Bringing Up Initials B.B. (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 22 March 2023 17:09 (two years ago)

So it looks like the big karaoke YouTube providers like KaraFun, Sing King and Party Tyme all have their stuff properly licensed but then the establishment also has to have its own licensing covered with ASCAP etc. as it would for other uses of copyrighted music, then it’s all hunky dory, I think.

Bringing Up Initials B.B. (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 22 March 2023 17:50 (two years ago)

“Can I Kick It?” was a huge hit, although it was pretty hard for me to do both parts cleanly and not run out of breath so I made some slight stumbles.

I’ve slowly been expanding my list of Beatles songs, almost always John’s. Somebody asked me to do “If I Fell” this week. I decided to accept this suicide mission, but it is very difficult to sing a famous harmony duet, maybe the most famous, with one voice. I finally ended up singing the Paul melody parts in the John register, which in retrospect was not such a bad idea.

Old Man Reacts to Cloud (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 25 March 2023 18:23 (two years ago)

Lol the repetitious end of songs.

"Shut it down!"

hootenanny-soundtracking clusterfucks about milking cows (Neanderthal), Saturday, 25 March 2023 19:44 (two years ago)

Ha, the Hey Jude rule! Sometimes the thing ends with a non-vocal interlude of one of two varieties. In the case of the first type you have to stick around to sing one more thing at the very end, in the second, you can safely leave your position at the mic to wander amongst your adoring public.

I did “Starman” once. Got no reaction and, more importantly, didn’t enjoy singing it that much. Too repetitive as you say, and I didn’t get anywhere close to nailing some of the other moments as well as I would have liked. Would still consider doing it again, but want to try some other Bowie first. Thinking about “Ziggy Stardust,” “Jean Genie” and “Rebel Rebel.”

Old Man Reacts to Cloud (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 25 March 2023 19:47 (two years ago)

Another one with a repetitive ending is “Suspicious Minds.”

Old Man Reacts to Cloud (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 25 March 2023 22:33 (two years ago)

Which is kind of fun to sing except how many times can you sing “caught in a trap” to a karaoke track instead of the TCB Band?

Old Man Reacts to Cloud (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 25 March 2023 22:34 (two years ago)

Last time I tried the live version, next time I will try the studio version which presents another challenge.

Old Man Reacts to Cloud (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 25 March 2023 22:39 (two years ago)

Almost feel guilty or nervous about enjoying my current karaoke jag so much and am afraid it will all dry up and I will turn back into Michigan J. Frog once again.

Old Man Reacts to Cloud (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 25 March 2023 22:46 (two years ago)

The challenge of the studio version of “Suspicious Minds” being that it is slower which prolongs the agony of trying to do justice to the chorus and breakdown. Elvis’s high notes have still got some amazing bottom going on like nobody else’s. It’s like chocolate or … velvet even.

Old Man Reacts to Cloud (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 25 March 2023 23:11 (two years ago)

Anyway, here’s another semi-pro tip: “Hey Jude” aside, you can pretty much sing any Beatles song you want to that you can find a track to and if you do even a half decent job people will respond since most know and love every single one of their tunes. I sometimes get sick of the phenomenon of The Beatles and their monolithic presence in the monoculture but I still can enjoy their music in isolation tracks, in limited doses. But they don’t really need me anymore, Rob Sheffield is taking good care of them.

Old Man Reacts to Cloud (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 25 March 2023 23:17 (two years ago)

Just now hearing Death Cab for Cutie singing “Christmas (Baby, Please Come Home)” and reminded that I was thinking about singing that last year like I was Darlene Love on David Letterman or something but ran out of time and couldn’t get over there. Maybe I can do it this year if we make it to December.

Old Man Reacts to Cloud (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 25 March 2023 23:20 (two years ago)

Which reminds me that I did two Merle Haggard tunes, “Mama Tried” and “Pancho and Lefty.” The first got a good response, the second crickets but I felt really good about it, it was really fun to do both Willie and Merle, and I may try it again. Also checking out some more Merle material for future use.

We were waiting at the end of our holiday for the coach transfer, about 30 mins early. So, we went into a bar where it was kicking and it was KJ time.
I put me down for doing "Ebeneezer Goode", what the hell, thinking we'd be long gone. Five mins later, I'm called.
Threw myself into it, kept up with the lyrics, did an "into the crowd", handed the mic back at the end, then grabbed our bags and out to the bus which came 5 mins later.
Definitely an "Elvis has left the building" moment.

Still doing this. There is some kind of brinkmanship of singing something a little too high and seeing how it goes. Just tried “In Dreams.” Pretty much knew I would have to drop the last line an octave but there were plenty of rough patches before that.

Cosmo’s Hacienda (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 16 May 2023 05:03 (two years ago)

I feel like whatever you can hit in a rehearsal at home (lol 'rehearsal' for karaoke, god i'm pathetic), you should deduct like 15% of that range at a karaoke night. something about alcohol plus nerves and having never done it before leaves the notes you thought you were just hitting at home to disappear.

nothing worse than being like 30 seconds into a song and going "fuck this was a mistake"

Tonight I overcame my lifelong fear of singing in front of people and did karaoke for the first time ever at a friend's birthday party. It was at one of those places where you're in a little room with just your friends, so less intimidating. I started with Tik Tok by Kesha, then did Dancing in the Dark, then Fast Car toward the end of the night. It was ridiculously fun and now I finally understand why people like karaoke.

Some songs get done a lot and I don’t like hearing them until some ringer shows up one day to show how it’s done.

Holly Godarkbloom (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 16 June 2023 05:23 (two years ago)

Thinking of doing “Ray of Light” sometime soon, but might have to split the difference between Mo and Jim.

Last night:

ABC - The Look of Love
Paramore - Ain't It Fun

the dreaded dependent claus (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 18 June 2023 19:08 (two years ago)

Was just thinking of doing that first one.

Holly Godarkbloom (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 18 June 2023 20:01 (two years ago)

Maybe I will have to approach it gradually, by doing “Poison Arrow” and “When Smokey Sings” in prior weeks.

Holly Godarkbloom (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 18 June 2023 20:02 (two years ago)

I'd love to do 'Ain't It Fun' but that's way above my capabilities. 'Tears Are Not Enough' would be my ABC pick - at least trying to go that high might be funny.

two weeks pass...

Been doing this regular for pretty much a year now. Wonder if I should issue some kind of summary report, start a new thread or keep my own counsel.

Man oh man, they started booking rock bands now before the karaoke, often playing at Live at Leeds volume in this cozy little place, which pushes the karaoke back even further into the wee wee hours, assuming it even happens at all.

Live and Left Eye (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 27 July 2023 03:52 (two years ago)

They should make the bands play for karaoke

the new drip king (DJP), Thursday, 27 July 2023 18:52 (two years ago)

we have one actual karaoke venue at Citywalk that does exactly that, though for apparently only two nights a week. however, it's a crapshoot if you ever get called to perform as so many people sign up and htey pick randomly.

we also used to have a Blue Martini around here that did it where just about everybody got called up, and man....was it fun! so different singing in front of a band. more likely to move around and have fun with it.

linoleum gallagher (Neanderthal), Thursday, 27 July 2023 18:54 (two years ago)

Ha, another band tonight, and they just played one of my karaoke tunes from a few weeks ago and did a good job so I will give them a chance.

Live and Left Eye (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 28 July 2023 03:54 (two years ago)

Heh, I wish

Live and Left Eye (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 28 July 2023 04:05 (two years ago)

Think I recognize the front lady of this band as one of the “ringers” from karaoke a few weeks ago.

Live and Left Eye (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 28 July 2023 04:06 (two years ago)

Wish I could remember what she sang then.

Live and Left Eye (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 28 July 2023 04:06 (two years ago)

Second encore is done and the karaoke tablet is making the rounds!

Okay, this one is for Ned.

Live and Left Eye (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 28 July 2023 05:07 (two years ago)

Seems to me some people may sing with too much Dracula vibrato.
