To drink our 40s that is. Make mine St. Ides.

Feel weird starting one of these threads, that's Luna's job. But I'm sure she'll understand. I'll try to bring it up anytime I'm on the board so maybe our lost sheep will return.

Now, I'm off to wash dishes. Then open another 40 'cause it's Friday, bitch! Peace.

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Friday, 13 January 2006 17:51 (twenty years ago)

I've never knowingly had a 40.

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 13 January 2006 17:53 (twenty years ago)

oh well, you're missing out my friend. If I still lived in Dallas I'd invite you to share one sitting on the front steps while watching vets go to AA meetings at the halfway house across the street. Classic.

Are there no 40s in the UK?

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Friday, 13 January 2006 17:55 (twenty years ago)

Mind if I make mine cider, instead?

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 13 January 2006 18:01 (twenty years ago)

I don't think so (xpost)! We don't tend to measure things in fluid ounces - it's all (milli)litres over here. A 40 is about 1.2 liters i think, and I can't think of any beers or similar bottled in this size. There has been a fad of oversized bottles lately, but these tend to be 660ml or 750ml, I think.

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 13 January 2006 18:02 (twenty years ago)

http://www.metrotimes.com/sb/91516/b8stopone.jpg

40s are malt liqour which has a higher alcohol content than regular beer. cheaper too. A 40 is usually only 2 or 3 bucks. Cheap, nasty drunk.

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Friday, 13 January 2006 18:15 (twenty years ago)

mmm ice cold 40s. can't wait for summer.

My son peed in his face this morning, it was great.

teeny (teeny), Friday, 13 January 2006 18:35 (twenty years ago)

Don't encourage that!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Friday, 13 January 2006 18:42 (twenty years ago)

haha teeny!

sgs (sgs), Friday, 13 January 2006 18:43 (twenty years ago)

wait did he pee in his own face or yours?

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Friday, 13 January 2006 19:18 (twenty years ago)

I don't envy little boys for that ability.

I've never had a 40 either. I tend to get wasted off a 1/2 of a regular beer anyway though.

Sarah Kittensmew McLusky (coco), Friday, 13 January 2006 19:24 (twenty years ago)

It's more of a liability than an ability, Sarah.

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 13 January 2006 19:33 (twenty years ago)

he peed in his own face, got himself good too. Man was he mad.

The next time I changed him, he had a tiny baby boner, it was so cute. I wonder if that inhibits his peeing?

teeny (teeny), Friday, 13 January 2006 19:37 (twenty years ago)

he had a tiny baby boner

WTF??

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 13 January 2006 19:41 (twenty years ago)

he's a tiny baby, what other kind should he have?

teeny (teeny), Friday, 13 January 2006 19:43 (twenty years ago)

I don't remember having any proper boners before puberty. I've since more than made up for their dearth in my early years.

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 13 January 2006 19:46 (twenty years ago)

It's possible to pee with a boner, but it takes a lot of concentration and some acrobatics not to get it in yr own eyes.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Friday, 13 January 2006 19:50 (twenty years ago)

It's possible to pee w/ boner, but it takes Mondo concentration and even more acrobatics to get the stream to go anywhere but straight up. Not recommended.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Friday, 13 January 2006 19:53 (twenty years ago)

Babies get them - when they have to pee, when cold air hits 'em, whatever. Baby bones are indeed a little bit weird. If it starts going up when you uncover it, chances are he's getting ready to pee again. Boys don't care - they'll pee on anyone at anytime.

luna (luna.c), Friday, 13 January 2006 19:53 (twenty years ago)

Well done, folks. We went from 40's to pissing to infatile watersports in no time.

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 13 January 2006 19:56 (twenty years ago)

And we drew Luna out!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Friday, 13 January 2006 19:57 (twenty years ago)

Dammit!

luna (luna.c), Friday, 13 January 2006 20:01 (twenty years ago)

Good Monday everyone!

It's technically a holiday here so some Americans might be at home I guess. G. doesn't get the day off, and I'm always here so it's a normal day for me.

I way overslept this morning after many long dreams about high school, old jobs, old friends. weird. am I going to die or something today? Was that my life's flashback?

How was the weekend for everybody? We spent most of it driving around looking at houses with G. asking, "would you want to live here? here?" I don't care a whole lot. I like porches, lots of windows and no carpet. But if you're buying that's all stuff that can be changed, right? Instead we made copious notes about the state of the neigborhood and any signs of gentrification. I also kept my eyes open for the closest schools and made note to look them up. (although I expect them all to be not good.)

Now, I have this house to clean. The kichen looks like the apocolypse hit and there isn't a clean dish in the house. The laundry is also toppling and refridgerator is bare. arrggh!I can only do so much in one day! I have to watch Tyra and Oprah!

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Monday, 16 January 2006 16:35 (twenty years ago)

Just found out that Brokeback Mtn has not played here and local theatres have ZERO plans to bring it here. Weird. This is like Gay Cowboy central.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 16 January 2006 18:01 (twenty years ago)

haha!

look for bootleg DVDs. I'll keep my eyes open.

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Monday, 16 January 2006 18:03 (twenty years ago)

Meanwhile "Just Friends" enters its 18th week in theatres.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 16 January 2006 18:06 (twenty years ago)

Ignorant Co-Worker #451: "I can't believe the gays want cowboys now, too! We have to draw the line somewhere!"

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 16 January 2006 18:07 (twenty years ago)

It was my girfriend's birthday on Saturday and we went out to dinner and drinks on Friday, Saturday and Sunday night. Consequently, I think I am getting sick. woohoo!

M. White (Miguelito), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 15:05 (twenty years ago)

didn't you just do that recently for your birthday? How old are you guys? I can't even really handle one night of drinking anymore.

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 15:15 (twenty years ago)

Afternoon everyone! Hey Luna, hope you are OK hon!
Haha Teeny! That's so funny. Although not sure about the baby boner, I'm not looking forward to that if I have a little boy.

Panther Pink (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 15:37 (twenty years ago)

how's your lil' one getting along Pink?

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 15:39 (twenty years ago)

My little one is getting big now Sam, thanks for asking. I've got my scan next week which is very exciting. I can't believe come next week, I'm half way there!
Did you decide on any houses or are you still looking?

Panther Pink (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 15:43 (twenty years ago)

Well the mortgage loan has been approved so now it's just a matter of choosing. Couple of finalists. . G.s favorite doesn't have central air. ugh. I keep reminding him if we go we that one to work in the cost of re-doing the whole house with central AC. I've gone TX summers without and hope to never do so again.

are you going to know the gender Pink or are you going to wait until delivery?

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 15:45 (twenty years ago)

It was her 40th, Sam. We had to spread it out between family (Friday), friends, of whom 25 went to dinner on Saturday, and another friend who was working on Saturday so we went to the restaurant where he works on Sunday. She got lots of loot. About six of us got her a strand of pearls and earrings and I got her an Hermès scarf.

Hi, Pink.

M. White (Miguelito), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 15:46 (twenty years ago)

How old are you, M.?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 15:50 (twenty years ago)

Yay on the mortgage! So is G's favourite, your favourite? (apart from the air situ!!)
With regards to "sexing the baby" (which sounds so wrong!!) I really REALLY want to know but the hospital have a policy of not telling you. It just feels kinda weird to have this thing moving around in my tummy (I felt the baby for the first time on Friday.) & I have no idea whether it's a boy or a girl. My boss had his son at the same hospital & they begged the sonographer to tell them the sex & they did, so fingers crossed!
Hi M! How's tricks? Are you feeling poorly as in hangover mode, or is it general poorly?!
x-post
Me wondered the same Huksta! *mwah btw*

Panther Pink (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 15:52 (twenty years ago)

I turned 38 in December. I'm not hungover. I think I caught a little cold, or rather, that the little bastard caught me.

How many month pregnant are you now, Pink?

M. White (Miguelito), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 15:55 (twenty years ago)

Wow. And this thread STARTED about drinking 40s on the stoop, now its all pregnancy, mortgages and baby boners.

Where have all the escapists gone?

Big Loud Mountain Ape (Big Loud Mountain Ape), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 15:56 (twenty years ago)

Wow, in the photos you've posted you look a lot younger. Not that 38 (or 40 even) is that old, just, y'know, etc.

Mmah back atcha, Pink.

I had a big important meeting with my "new" bosses yesterday and totally wowed 'em. So much so that they finally delivered the cheque I had invoiced them for OVER A MONTH AGO. I think I also impressed the one of the funders of the project who sat in on the meeting via speakerphone, and sort of effed everything up by saying that the people with the money have developed a different idea of what they want this project to be, so it's almost back to the drawing board, which, since I working on a deliverables-vs-payables system, means I need to maybe look for a loophole so's I can get paid for the work I've already done.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 16:00 (twenty years ago)

Damn Michael, you and your girlfriend are made of different stock than my wimpy early-30s ass. Even one or two drinks these days affects me negatively enough that I rarely have that. Maybe it's the lithium.

Pink, that policy sucks! It's your baby, it's your business.

Houses . .I'm not so picky. The things I like - hardwood floors, windows, decks and porches - are things you can add yourself so no biggie if it's not there. The housing market is rough in Austin these days so G. is more concerned with long-term investment and whether the house could be resold five or ten years down the line. whatevs. I'll just be glad to finally get to have my pink room!

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 16:02 (twenty years ago)

M - I'm 19 weeks pregnant, so 5 months next week. Those pesky bastards (the cold ones I mean) they are a pain indeed!

Huk - surely you should get paid if you've done the work, it's not your fault the fucktards changed their minds!

Sam - Tell me about it! I really want to know to the point that I might have a private scan to determine the sex. I hate not knowing.
A pink room eh? Pray do tell! Of course, I totally approve. ;-)

Panther Pink (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 16:07 (twenty years ago)

you should ask Tom Cruise if you can borrow his and Katie's machine. Pretend you're interested in Scientology.

I just want to have one room to paint and decorate all pink. Hopefully a baby girl could then make her home there. Or a boy, whatever.

There's so much regionalization going on on ILX I might just start an Austin thread all for myself instead of reviving a real bloggy-blog.

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 16:09 (twenty years ago)

Heh, now that would be nice if I could spend that sort of cash, at least I'd be able to see my little one whenever I wanted.
Awww, so you guys are going to star trying to conceive once you get all new housed up?

Panther Pink (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 16:11 (twenty years ago)

Our bedroom is a light rose color.

I can't believe that they won't tell you the sex of your child, Pink.

I cannot imagine living in Texas without central air, Sam. Otoh, whatever you pay out to install it will bring added value to the house.

M. White (Miguelito), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 16:12 (twenty years ago)

M's right Sam. It could also be a good bargaining tool to bring the price down.
I know what you mean about not telling me the sex. They say it's because they don't want to waste time on it & would rather concentrate on checking that everything's ok. I think it's because they don't want to get sued if they get the sex wrong. Either that or just to be meanies!

Panther Pink (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 16:15 (twenty years ago)

sam and pink, so happy for you and all the changes! Pink, they also sell blood testing kits, but they're about 400USD, dunno if that would be cheaper than a private scan. Getting the scan is pretty neat though. That's a really horrible policy, what the hell is the logic behind refusing to tell you? xp oh that's a lousy excuse, it takes no time at all. I have a great scan of my son's twig and berries, they were right out there and unmistakable! Usually the ultrasound technicians love babies so I bet if you beg you'll get told.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 16:18 (twenty years ago)

yes resell value and bargaining down are all good. This house is probably a "handyman's delight" but is about all to be found in a "good neighborhood."

Perhaps the freedom of having things how you want it is one of the few pluses with our medical systems.

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 16:19 (twenty years ago)

It's a girl. Trust me. I have a feeling.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 16:22 (twenty years ago)

Well I'm hoping that that will be the case Teeny. I just have to wait & see. A private scan shouldn't be anymore than £150, perhaps less. It's frustrating because I opted for this hospital over the other hospital that is close to us (which incidentally is the best baby hospital in the country) which does sex the baby. It's a teaching hospital though, so they are a bit quick to intervene & don't really let you take your time.
x-post
Really Huk? I wish I had a feeling either way, I feel like such a failure! haha!

Panther Pink (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 16:23 (twenty years ago)

Here a few hospitals have a policy of not letting the parents know the baby's sex to prevent people aborting on that basis. I wonder if that's why they won't let you know, Pink.

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 16:23 (twenty years ago)

If I'm right, and it is a girl, can I pick her name?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 16:24 (twenty years ago)

I should imagine it's for that reason too Bryan, but they certainly don't tell you that in the literature.
Of course Huk!

Panther Pink (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 16:26 (twenty years ago)

It's funny, 'cause some friends of mine made a real effort NOT to know the sex of their child. Still, it's medical and personal information that should be available to the parents, regardless of it's relative utility and importance.

M. White (Miguelito), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 16:27 (twenty years ago)

Is it even legal to have an elective abortion that late in a pregnancy?

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 17:04 (twenty years ago)

No.

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 17:37 (twenty years ago)

Well, I get to leave early today!
Someone just asked me to have a look at the printer, because it says "toner low", and I'm only 40 minutes into my UNPAID lunch break, ergo, I will be leaving 20 minutes early.
"Um, that means that it's going to need a new toner cartridge soon. But not now." FUCKERS. Also, if you're going to whine about "low toner" maybe think twice about what you're printing off. FUCKERS.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 17:45 (twenty years ago)

xpost
How late are we talking about? There are a handful of US clinics that will perform abortions up to 24 weeks, and they're also legal here though almost no one performs them. I really need to stop posting about this! This is a fun thread!

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 17:54 (twenty years ago)

IIrc, Roe vs. Wade forbids Congress and the States from banning or regulating 1st trimester abortions, allows the regulation but not the banning of 2nd trimester abortions, and allows for the banning and regulation of 3rd trimester abortions.

M. White (Miguelito), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 17:57 (twenty years ago)

Also of recent note.

M. White (Miguelito), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 17:58 (twenty years ago)

So, if any of you swing by SF anytime soon, allow me to recommend this place.

The food is amazing.

M. White (Miguelito), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 18:19 (twenty years ago)

this was an interesting recent article on abortion:

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 18:34 (twenty years ago)

A friend of mine who's preggers too told that in Finland they won't to tell the sex of the baby because it's not 100% sure, and they fear people'd get pissed off if the prognosis is wrong, if they'd like already bought lots of baby boy stuff or something.

Me, I'm all for unisex baby clothes and all, it's kinda weird how you have to make a child fit into a gender role right from the beginning. And I think my friend is the same, but she didn't have any need to know if it's a boy or a girl beforehand anyway, so she's okay with them not telling.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 22 January 2006 10:29 (twenty years ago)

Hi folks. I HAVE AN INTERVIEW WITH A RECORD COMPANY!

Fucking dream job as a media coordinator.

WOO, DO IT TO IT, BINGO!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 23 January 2006 19:50 (twenty years ago)

congrats chris! good luck!

I have an interview Friday with the university systems office for an electronic media coordinator. It's working with the state's public school iniative which would be fun. I'd be creating online learning materials for public school teachers and students. And the pay better than local member institution (my last employer). hurrah!

people'd get pissed off if the prognosis is wrong, if they'd like already bought lots of baby boy stuff or something.

My kid's wearing pink and purple, I don't care what it is. ;)

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Monday, 23 January 2006 19:51 (twenty years ago)

BINGO SING TEDDY P. FOR THEM YOU WILL GET DA JOB FOR REALS.

Je4nn3 ƒur¥ (Je4nne Fury), Monday, 23 January 2006 19:57 (twenty years ago)

Good luck Miss M!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 23 January 2006 20:02 (twenty years ago)

I have an job interview on Friday too, but it's only for some pretty lame part-time office job. I need the money anyhow, because the state has stopped paying me student aid, since I should've already graduated last year. Is it my fault I love to study and learn new things?

Good luck with your interview, Sam!

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 23 January 2006 22:10 (twenty years ago)

good luck with yours too.

I'm not sweating mine yet b/c I'm still getting unemployment checks, woo-hoo!

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Monday, 23 January 2006 22:31 (twenty years ago)

pass me some of your interview mojo, people. I just applied for 4 more jobs in the past week. I should list Sisyphus as my current post. It would have been 5 but one, although it "is working towards diversity," apparently won't consider my application because of my nationality. Nice.

Tuomas I sympathise, I too love the studying. This fall it's all coming to an end forever (along with my own student aid), sigh. Good luck with your interviews, everyone!

sgs (sgs), Monday, 23 January 2006 22:33 (twenty years ago)

Bush has taken over all of Martha Stewart, he must die.

Pink, did you have your scan yet?

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Thursday, 26 January 2006 15:56 (twenty years ago)

arrghh! a White House press corp member just said "conversated". WTF??

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Thursday, 26 January 2006 15:57 (twenty years ago)

Bush has taken over all of Martha Stewart, he must die.

Not that I disagree, but can you clarify?

M. White (Miguelito), Thursday, 26 January 2006 16:30 (twenty years ago)

Oh CBS was showing a stupid press conference that none of the networks saw fit to air. He wasn't really saying anything important, just more poor attempts to defend his illegal spying.

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Thursday, 26 January 2006 16:40 (twenty years ago)

Good luck for all the job interviews & applications! Bingo - you go get 'em tiger!

Well I had my scan yesterday & thank God the baby is perfectly healthy & extemely active! We asked to find out the sex & the lady said she couldn't tell us but we could try sexing it ourselves & then she moved the thingy & said "we're now looking between the baby's legs" & sure enough, we've got a little boy! :-) (well at least we think!)

Panther Pink (Pinkpanther), Friday, 27 January 2006 10:10 (twenty years ago)

yay! congrats! at least the tech was somewhat cooperative.

I have to leave for my interview in a moment and I woke this morning with a massive sore throat and headache. arrgghh! I just want to stay in bed with some hot tea but now I have to trek downtown and talk myself up in front of strangers. I'm in such a foul mood it's not even funny.

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Friday, 27 January 2006 13:55 (twenty years ago)

best of luck Sam! x

Panther Pink (Pinkpanther), Friday, 27 January 2006 14:37 (twenty years ago)

Merde, Sam and yay, Pink!

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 27 January 2006 14:57 (twenty years ago)

I still think it's a girl, Pink!
Good luck, Sam!

I had the day off yesterday, and I was going to spend the whole day working on my (on the verge of getting behind schedule) other job, but instead I didn't do anything at all. And then I fell asleep. Doing nothing is exhausting!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Friday, 27 January 2006 15:32 (twenty years ago)

Huk - you may well still be right! :-)

Thanks's M!

Panther Pink (Pinkpanther), Friday, 27 January 2006 15:33 (twenty years ago)

interview over. yay. It was with four people, at once. I hate those kind of interviews.

It's cold and gloomy here. yucko.

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Friday, 27 January 2006 17:07 (twenty years ago)

It's 0°C here right now, which is the warmest it's been on my birthday since 1989. Not bad. I get to leave work early to donate blood and then I'll go home, take a nice bath, then go for sushi and beers. I hate those interviews, too, Sam. I usually just try to crack everyone up.

Bryan (Bryan), Friday, 27 January 2006 17:13 (twenty years ago)

so it's your birthday? feliz cumpleanos!

The weather here leaves me eternally unhappy. When it's 80F+ in January, I bitch. When it gets cold enough for a coat, I bitch. I honestly don't know what would make me happy.

I'm going to Taco Bell. That's how crappy I feel. ;)

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Friday, 27 January 2006 17:17 (twenty years ago)

Happy Birthday, Bryan.

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 27 January 2006 17:18 (twenty years ago)

happy birthday, bryan! good luck with the interviews, all...

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 16:34 (twenty years ago)

Yay! Congrats, Sam. (On the house part. Moving is one my least favorite activities.)

M. White (Miguelito), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 16:37 (twenty years ago)

yes there are already arguments afoot about the moving part. maybe I'll spring for movers.

we also have to paint, redo the floors at the new place. come may, all shall be peaceful again.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 16:57 (twenty years ago)

thank you, I'll have to take pictures the next time we go over. that's just from the home search site.

It has a free standing garage, huge driveway (perfect for bbqs) and covered patio in the back.

can you hire people to pack? For me, packing means lots of looking and reminicsing.

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 16:59 (twenty years ago)

perfect for bbqs

Is there bbq in Texas?

M. White (Miguelito), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 17:08 (twenty years ago)

you're joking, right?

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 17:08 (twenty years ago)

Of course I'm joking, Sam.

What kind of back yard does it have?

M. White (Miguelito), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 17:30 (twenty years ago)

oh, ok.

The backayrd's actually a bit smallish as there's been a huge room added on to the back of the house. but like I said there's a brick covered patio which will be sweet for sittin' on.

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 17:43 (twenty years ago)

I believe barbecue is mandatory in Texas for at least one meal a day.

It looks great, Sam! I hope you'll be enormously happy there!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 19:57 (twenty years ago)

thank you martin.

are canned asparagus gross? I'm overdue a trip to the store and am trying to make the best with what's on hand.

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 20:11 (twenty years ago)

Canned or in a jar?

M. White (Miguelito), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 20:13 (twenty years ago)

canned. :(

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 20:14 (twenty years ago)

congrats sam! welcome to the club. we are refinishing our basement now into a yoga/bar/poker room.

slow jamz and white guy indie acoustic shit (Chris V), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 20:15 (twenty years ago)

Canned, huh? They're likely to be soggy. You could add them to soup or a salad.

M. White (Miguelito), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 20:40 (twenty years ago)

i have been smoke free for a week. nicotrol inhaler is god. in other news, im hungover like a mother fucker and on the horn.

slow jamz and white guy indie acoustic shit (Chris V), Friday, 3 February 2006 17:03 (twenty years ago)

congrats for being smoke-free. I'm on the rag, wanna trade?

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Friday, 3 February 2006 17:17 (twenty years ago)

hah. no. ;)

slow jamz and white guy indie acoustic shit (Chris V), Friday, 3 February 2006 17:21 (twenty years ago)

so whats up with the house?

slow jamz and white guy indie acoustic shit (Chris V), Friday, 3 February 2006 17:21 (twenty years ago)

looks like all systems go. the inspector's report was good. waiting now on the seller's reply to some demands.

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Friday, 3 February 2006 17:23 (twenty years ago)

thats always the fun part. the old lady we bought our house from didn't want to pay for a thing, even though she made $200000!

slow jamz and white guy indie acoustic shit (Chris V), Friday, 3 February 2006 17:25 (twenty years ago)

Dude, I am so envious of yr smoke-free-osity. Do you need a prescription for the nicotrol inhalogoodness?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Friday, 3 February 2006 19:00 (twenty years ago)

Mondays are the suX0r. we drank too much at a superbowl party last night so it's particularly harsh. At least I didn't have to go to work like G. allthough I think he's coming home early.

the steelers won didn't they?

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Monday, 6 February 2006 16:46 (twenty years ago)

Boy, you did drink too much! ;-) I didn't drink half as much on Sunday as I did watching three soccer games on Saturday.

M. White (Miguelito), Monday, 6 February 2006 17:11 (twenty years ago)

haha, the tv was in the yard and there was too many people and far too much bbq for me to truly pay attention. There were pork and vension sausages, ten whole chickens and a brisket. mmmm, brisket.

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Monday, 6 February 2006 17:16 (twenty years ago)

Damn, that sounds delicious, Sam.

M. White (Miguelito), Monday, 6 February 2006 17:57 (twenty years ago)

I didn't watch a minute of the Superbowl, does that make me unamerican?

luna (luna.c), Monday, 6 February 2006 18:27 (twenty years ago)

I had never been to a baseball game in my life before 1998. I was considered very suspect by quite a few friends, but that hasn't changed even though I've been to quite a few since.

M. White (Miguelito), Monday, 6 February 2006 18:29 (twenty years ago)

who's going to watch the olympics?

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Monday, 6 February 2006 18:32 (twenty years ago)

Me!

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 6 February 2006 18:32 (twenty years ago)

I'll be checking in on a bit of it. and knitting for the knit olympics!

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Monday, 6 February 2006 18:34 (twenty years ago)

I did exercise before the Super Bowl started, then I sat down and ate chips and dip and a hot dog or two. Pretty counterintuitive, yeah. And I didn't even watch the thing; I tuned in for the halftime show (I will always at least like the Stones -- BTW, when did Keith start looking better than Mick?), but I mainly watched the Puppy Bowl and some other things.

Anyway. I just wanted to drop in and say hi because I hadn't done so yet in this thread. So hi.

It's Me Again, But Only For A Limited Time (Dee the Lurker), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 01:50 (twenty years ago)

Dee! miss you.

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 01:59 (twenty years ago)

yes, i needed a prescrip for the inhaler. it works great, coming up on two weeks.

slow jamz and white guy indie acoustic shit (Chris V), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 10:54 (twenty years ago)

hey Dee, hope you're OK!
Yay Sam, your new house looks gorgeous! When do you get to move in?
Bingo - not really sure what you just said, but "helllooo" anyway! ;-)

howdy! hows the pregnancy coming along?

slow jamz and white guy indie acoustic shit (Chris V), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 11:54 (twenty years ago)

Coming along very well thanks. 22 weeks now, but am getting quite impatient & want to have my son to snuggle now!!
How's everything with you & yours?

Panther Pink (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 11:59 (twenty years ago)

same old same old. nuttin yet. still "plugging" away.

slow jamz and white guy indie acoustic shit (Chris V), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 12:31 (twenty years ago)

Hello, everyone. I am all sugared up from this kind of gross frosted apple poptart I ate cold at my desk. Other than that, life is pretty good these days.

Pink, are you reading lots and lots of Expecting books? I just finished Little Earthquakes. It's silly and fictional, but I still feel I learned a lot about birthin' babies.

Sarah Tallboots McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 14:44 (twenty years ago)

Hello everybody. Long time no hear.

M. White (Miguelito), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 15:09 (twenty years ago)

YEAH NO SHIT.

slow jamz and white guy indie acoustic shit (Chris V), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 15:16 (twenty years ago)

Sarah - I have read some books, but I was in fear of overloading my brain & its capacity has diminished somewhat since the arrival of the wriggly baby in my tummy!! What have you learnt that I might need to know?
Hey M? How is life with you?

Panther Pink (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 15:24 (twenty years ago)

It's good, Pink. Thanks. How's the whole preggers thing treating you? Have you picked a name, yet?

M. White (Miguelito), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 15:26 (twenty years ago)

The preggers thing is going very well thanks. We've picked out 3 names for a boy, Oscar, Sonny or Rudy. Oscar is definitely winning out at the moment. We opted not to name him until he's born, just in case he's a she!

Panther Pink (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 15:54 (twenty years ago)

ooh I love Oscar. The others are good too.

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 16:05 (twenty years ago)

How is it going with you & your little one Teeny? I've been trying to keep up with the parents thread, but some of it scares me! haha!

Panther Pink (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 16:07 (twenty years ago)

aww, look at the old timers! Hey Sarah! Glad things are going well Pink.

We close the last week of this month and have to be out of this house by the 15th of next. Not only moving but painting and re-doing of floors must happen in those three weeks. In fact, I should be packing and stuff now, not messing around on the net.

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 16:10 (twenty years ago)

Aww, I'm so pleased for you Sam, you really deserve it. Did anything come of the interview you went to?

Panther Pink (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 16:12 (twenty years ago)

Hi, Sam. :-D

I wish I had something interesting and life-changing to report, but I don't. My band finished recording our cd. It's being mixed now, cover art is being commissioned, that sort of thing. Meanwhile, I'm fantasizing again about painting our apartment. My favorite BenMoore paint colors at this point are.. watch out... BUTTE ROCK and DILL PICKLE. Yum.

Sarah Tallboots McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 16:28 (twenty years ago)

mmm, I love pickles. virtually no calories!

I flubbed that interview. No big deal b/c I didn't really want the job once I heard more about it. I would like to try and stay unemployed till after the move if possible as that would make things easier. But then I really got to find something!

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 16:31 (twenty years ago)

Mmm pickles!

Panther Pink (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 16:34 (twenty years ago)

I love you.

M. White (Miguelito), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 16:36 (twenty years ago)

when i was in high school we found my friends mothers dildo. it looked like a huge cuke, when you pulled the top off a giant cock came out.to this day he claims his mother bought it by mistake at the grocery store...someone put it in with the cucumbers he says. so his nick name since that day has been "pickle".

M. White (Miguelito), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 17:16 (twenty years ago)

hey everyone--i've got to cook dinner soon and the only thing that I think I can eat without repeating what I ate for lunch is a vegetable stir-fry. I fear just having vegetables might be kind of boring though. Kind of like reading about someone else's lame dinner plans might be, huh.

Congrats on the house Sam! Looks cute and green/leafy.

sgs (sgs), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 19:20 (twenty years ago)

I made a stir-fry on Monday night, sgs: rabe, bok choy, slivered carrots, porcini mushrooms, but being a confrimed carnivore, I also put in a sliced and marinated pork chop.

M. White (Miguelito), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 19:25 (twenty years ago)

Sounds yum--I'm gonna sliver me some carrots. Sadly, I have no meat products I can add but uh, pepperoni...or hot dogs...and that's not really appealing.

sgs (sgs), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 19:34 (twenty years ago)

pepperoni stir fry sounds amazing.

slow jamz and white guy indie acoustic shit (Chris V), Thursday, 9 February 2006 11:38 (twenty years ago)

I just don't really like stir frys, just can't get excited about them at all!

Panther Pink (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 9 February 2006 11:44 (twenty years ago)

Last night I ended up making a chopped salad: romaine, tomatoes, scallions, cucumber, tomatoes, bacon, Petit Basque, salt, pepper, and vinaigrette made with meyers lemons and dijon mustard.

Is it wrong that I'm sort of sick of ILe? Not y'all, of course, or many of the other people, but there are several who are posting lots and lots who just make me feel... meh.

Having said that, today I have:

- been bumped into by a car backing up;
- been nipped by a dawg who is NOT AT ALL AMUSED about having a bandage on her foot, NEVERMIND that I have to change it (she has a MAJOR FOOT PHOBIA DO NOT EVER TOUCH MY FEET NO NO NO I DON'T LIKE IT OW OW YOU'RE HURTING ME DON'T OW OW NO NO NO ACK ACK HELP ME);
- given myself a holy mother of god papercut; and
- opened the very sharp corner of my desk drawer into my very tender thigh.

I'M GOING HOME NOW.

I don't think it's wrong Luna, although I miss seeing you around. Sorry yesterday sucked, today it's Friday!

Hey I need some quick help. A job I've applied for (a really good one it seems) has sent me four essay questions to answer and return by tomorrow. One of them wants me to list four sites I like and discuss the graphic design principal at work. ARGH.

I no longer have an at-hand list of such sites since I don't really care. But i could do this job and do care about paying bills so want to at least get an interview. Anybody know some good-looking sites (or places to look for such) off the top of their head? I can write very well about anything. I just need something to start with.

She dashed by me in painted on jeans
And all heads turned 'cause she was the dream
In the blink of an eye I knew her number and her name yeah
Ah she said I was the tiger she wanted to tame

Caribbean queen
Now we're sharing the same dream
And our hearts they beat as one
No more love on the run

I lose my cool when she steps in the room
And I get so excited just from her perfume
Electric eyes that you can't ignore
And passion burns you like never before

I was in search of a good time
Just running my game
Love was the furthest
Furthest from my mind

Good hump day everyone!

I spent all of yesterday in the kitchen cooking up a romantic v-day dinner. Today, I'm going to spend all day in the kitchen. .cleaning. bleh.

Last night G came home with a bouqet of roses and lilies but then this morning after he'd left for work I found my present waiting in the filthy kitchen: a lovely pink and black leather laptop case and a $100 gift certificate to the yarn store. yay!

I need to get scrubbin' here soon.

how were heart days elsewhere?

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 16:04 (twenty years ago)

We had champers and then a dinner of bavette steak rubbed in mustard and herbes de provence and cooked with some shallots and finished by poaching in beef stock before thinly slicing (her semi-drunken idea) and a salad consisting of romaine, a whole bunch of scallions, diced, a handful of grated parmesan, tomatoes and avocado dressed with a meyers lemon/mustard vinaigrette (my drunken idea). It turned out better than it should have and then we sat down and watched a 1936 Wyler directed film starring Walter Huston, called 'Dodsworth' and drank a bottle of red someone gave me for Xmas. All in all, a lot like many nights at home, but we don't really do Valentine's Day.

Your laptop case sounds quite fetching, Sam.

M. White (Miguelito), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 16:22 (twenty years ago)

Michael, you are so much more sophiscticated than us. My guy doesn't really like any drink that isn't carbonated or which doesn't have tequila so I don't indulge in champers or wine too much.

I started him off with shrimp cocktail (I don't care too much for shrimp) and a dos equis served in one of my crystal goblets. Then we had a salad of romaine, cherry tomatoes, and avocadeo dressed with pureered avocado, lime juice and chili powder. Dinner was spinach sauteed in garlic and pepper-encrusted filet mignon with a red wine sauce. I got to drink the rest of the wine. num. For desert a very rich devil's food cake, heart-shaped, with glazed strawberries between layers and fresh berries on top. The icing was a bit of a disaster though (all was from scratch) as I foolishly subsituted chocolates and ended up with a runny, almost sickingly sweet mess. It still looked nice but Martha would be so asahmed of me. :(

Then we watched American Idol. Pure class!

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 16:47 (twenty years ago)

It does! (x-post)

I didn't do anything - went home, ordered a pizza, and Spencer went to my mom's, so I read and went to bed. Whee.

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 16:49 (twenty years ago)

Michael, you are so much more sophiscticated than us.

Rubbish. It's just a question of different taste. I don't drink a lot of beer and the only cusines I can think of where I'd drink it with dinner are sushi and Mexican, epecially Mexican. If I drank tequila at dinner, the results might be hilarious for everyone else but ugly for me. Also, champagne is carbonated. Your dinner sounds delicious, btw. Just as an aside, can you imagine living somewhere you couldn't get good avocado?

M. White (Miguelito), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 16:54 (twenty years ago)

Hi Luna, Sam, M & Bingo!
Luna - I'm a little late to your post of the 10th, but I am in the same position, ILE is not really the place for me anymore, that said, I do like to keep up with this post.
I didn't exactly have a romantic evening last night as I had to pick up James's mum from the hospital after an operation & we had to make sure she was OK & cook her dinner. I didn't really mind, we didn't have anything planned. James made me cry twice though yesterday, once we I got the card that he'd sent me at work & then again when the 12 red roses turned up! :-) I'm so emotional this week it's untrue! I'm also poorly with a cold, which is fun knowing I can't take any medication!!
Hope everyone is well this afternoon/or morning as it is for some of you!

Panther Pink (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 16:55 (twenty years ago)

luna, did you ever find your CD? Were any other Angeleno drivers hurt in the process?

Hi, Pink! Hope your mum-in-law is OK.

M. White (Miguelito), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 16:58 (twenty years ago)

i have discovered that pineapple in pizza (in this particular case, it was deepdish), strange as it has always sounded to me, is really good. that was my valentine's epiphany.

Juulia (julesbdules), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 17:00 (twenty years ago)

Julia, you heathen! ;-)

M. White (Miguelito), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 17:00 (twenty years ago)

I love pineapple in pizza!

Michael, there are so many things, food-wise, that I get here which really end up keeping me here.

Luna, your night sounds pretty good actually! Thanks for thinking of me yesterday, :hugs:

argh, pink, no medications is something I really worry about re: getting pregnant. you're doing ok otherwise?

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 17:03 (twenty years ago)

for breakfast this morning i had what would have been my dinner last night: salmon steak with rosemary and a really nice sauce, and asparagus and rice. that was the intended solitude meal, but since i had company instead, it went in the fridge for later. good breakfast!

though i did have some sparkling grape juice last night (i miss booze, but i react to it badly).

the pizza kicked ass! i wish i had some leftovers.

Juulia (julesbdules), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 17:08 (twenty years ago)

I saw some smoked trout at Costco the other day that I didn't buy, even though it was deal, 'cause 12 oz. of smoked trout goes a long way, but it brought to mind a salad i used to make:

Butter lettuce, super-thin sliced fennel, grapefruit or mandarine sections de-skinned (pain in the ass, btw), and smoked trout, all dressed simply with a drizzle of olive oil, lemon, and a touch of pepper.

Can you tell I haven't had anything to eat this morning?

M. White (Miguelito), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 17:14 (twenty years ago)

is this thread going to turn into food porn?

Juulia (julesbdules), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 17:18 (twenty years ago)

If I don't get a break to go buy breakfast, it might.

M. White (Miguelito), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 17:20 (twenty years ago)

I did find the cd, and no one was killed en route - BUT IT WAS CLOSE.

Stupid assholes.

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 17:30 (twenty years ago)

Hi everyone--I'm wondering right now if I can cook the fish that's in our freezer from frozen. If so we might have a pretty good dinner tonight. They're whole fish--trout I think?

Last night Mark and I ordered pizza and drank some nice wine and port and shared some tiramisu, it was yum. I might like port too much.

sgs (sgs), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 17:34 (twenty years ago)

i could easily get rid of 12oz of smoked trout in a day, but then i'm a glutton of the highest order when it comes to smoked fish. my flatmate and i got through a side of irish smoked salmon in a week last year.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 17:35 (twenty years ago)

sarah, I would defrost under a cold tap first.

I have sadly only had a bowl of berry burst cheerios today. I have some leftover salad and of course yummy cake for lunch. but that would mean going into the kitchen. ack! I've showered, read the paper, shopped for yarn. hmm maybe I'll walk the dog now!

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 17:52 (twenty years ago)

The best for defrosting is to take it out in the morning and let it defrost slowly. Because of its crystals, ice actually has greater volume than liquid water and changing states too quickly can damage frozen flesh in a way that makes it lose more water during cooking.

M. White (Miguelito), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 18:01 (twenty years ago)

Hey Sam, I am totally sorry about being remiss in congratulating you about your houseage! It looks very, very cozy and nice and like it's in an actual neighborhood, thank goodness. Oh! And guess which TV show my mom's gotten me hooked onto -- "Law & Order: Criminal Intent"! I remember you saying in a TITTWIS a long-ass time ago that you thought Vincent D'Onofrio was hot. Well, I totally see how you could say so -- he's a cutie and a half. And Kathryn Erbe is totally kick-ass. I've gotten off "Queer Eye" because I did NOT want to see yet ANOTHER make-better candidate and connected family from the NYC metropolitan area. If I was to see one more of those people, I would have screamed bloody murder. OTOH, I never got tired of the "Fab Five". Too bad the producers are too pig-headed to take the show on the road.

Anyway, remember how I was asking your (general TITTWIS) advice about what exercise program to get into (or something along those lines)? Yeah, I went with the Jazzercise. I've been going for about a month and most of my muscles scream out at me (particularly my thigh and upper arm muscles), but I've been running out of breath a lot less and am getting a little more energetic. Though I must confess that halfway through one of those classes, I'm not at all grateful to be there. Though hopefully I'll get better at it as I progress.

M. White, you are seriously the classiest guy I know (or "know"). I'm going to look up "debonair" in the dictionary and expect to see your picture right next to the defintion, you know.

I'd like to take this moment to run up to Pink and give her a tackle hug. Or a very gentle hug, if the tackle hug will damage Pink Jr. (many congratulations on that!).

I tried to forget Valentine's Day was yesterday. I saw part of a romantic movie while eating dinner (Forget Paris, which was on Flix), but it's entertaining overall, so I didn't view it as part of the whole package. As a rule, I generally have zero feelings about Valentine's Day, but yesterday the significance of the day hit me. I guess it's because I'm getting older, or maybe it's because of some other reason -- I honestly don't know why yesterday bothered me as much as it did, when other Valentine's Days were non-events to me.

Um, that'll be it as far as updates go.

It's Me Again, But Only For A Limited Time (Dee the Lurker), Thursday, 16 February 2006 01:35 (twenty years ago)

My other job is about to come crashing down around me (or maybe it's already come crashing down, and I've yet to receive the urgent telegram). Whatever. It's 60% my fault, but I think that was subconsciously a pre-emptive strike.
But I'm still gonna take my March holiday. Probably Vancouver. I was going to start a thread about it, but I don't think I really know any Vancouver area ILXors, so what would be the fuss for meeting them and putting myself in an unnecessary awkward sitchy-a-shun?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 16 February 2006 04:57 (twenty years ago)

Hi, Pink! Hope your mum-in-law is OK.
Thanks M, it was an op on her foot, so nothing too serious thank goodness.
Julia, you heathen! ;-)
Indeed! :-)
argh, pink, no medications is something I really worry about re: getting pregnant. you're doing ok otherwise?
It has been a bit of a problem re migraines, but I just kinda get through it you know. I'm doing good otherwise. Did you manage to write those essays?
I'd like to take this moment to run up to Pink and give her a tackle hug. Or a very gentle hug, if the tackle hug will damage Pink Jr. (many congratulations on that!).
Awww, thanks Dee. I hope you're doing OK too honey.

Panther Pink (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 16 February 2006 10:26 (twenty years ago)

My immediate boss, a voluptuous and pulchritudinous lass, is leaving on Friday. One might have thought that Friday would have been the ideal day to have farewell drinks but instead it was last night. We were supposed to meet at the newish and willfully chic Americano bar in the Vitale Hotel. I called before heading off since I had had a few jars beforehand with a friend and I wanted to make sure they were still there. I was informed that they were just leaving to go to Hooters for buffalo wings! So I forayed down to Fisherman's Wharf for the first time in several years to visit our local branch of the notorious chain. First disappointment: no liquor, just beer and wine, though upon reflection I could see the wisdom in that. I was about to ask for their wine list when I came to my senses and ordered a pint. Much less risqué than I had expected and the flesh colored tights were so not sexy though I could easily see why a scantily clad waitress in San Francisco in February would want to have them. Their garlic fries were viler still than the ones at the ballpark but the wings were quite good. There was one young man at the bar, apparently a local, unironically wearing a Hooters t-shirt, which was actually the only thing there that made me gasp.

M. White (Miguelito), Thursday, 16 February 2006 15:26 (twenty years ago)

Hey Dee! Congratson the exercise regime. I need to do something but I have zero motivation.

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Thursday, 16 February 2006 15:28 (twenty years ago)

I'm sticking with my regimen of running off at the mouth, jumping to conclusions, and lifting purses.

The main Yahoo page had this headline in their 'In The News' section:

Video: Sharapova trades racket for bikini

and the first thing I thought was, 'she must be pretty good to play tennis with a bikini.'

M. White (Miguelito), Thursday, 16 February 2006 15:48 (twenty years ago)

Holy fuck Chris, that's amazing! Many congrats to you and your wife!

Hey Pink -- things have been going better for me, thanks. Things are kinda peachy if I'm not hanging around ILX. How about you? How are things going on with you?

M. White, only you would describe a visit to Hooters like that. (Me, I stay far away from it.)

Sam, thanks for the congrats. I've been hitting a low point where I don't feel as energetic and my whole body feels sore, but today I went and afterward I felt a little better. So I guess maybe I'll start feeling better again. (I go Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays.)

See Me, Repeat Me (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 17 February 2006 01:42 (twenty years ago)

M. White, only you would describe a visit to Hooters like that. (Me, I stay far away from it.)

Think of it as (1) social obligation coupled with (2) sociological curioisity. It frankly wasn't worse than most of the American chins I've been to. Seeped in mediocrity to be sure, but cheerful and they had good beer on tap, ffs.

Chris, I'm still thrilled for you. After so many years of living in hope, this must be magical. I hope this doesn't mean the end of your regularly scheduled sex life, for your sake. ;-)

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 17 February 2006 03:34 (twenty years ago)

chains, that is

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 17 February 2006 03:44 (twenty years ago)

most of the American chins

HA. How many would that be, two or three? ;)

And yes, it was socially obligated; you made that point clear in your earlier post. I guess I sorta obfuscated my understanding of that with my parenthetical statement. Though it's good to know that you experienced good service and found "good beer on tap" there (disclosure: I'm a total nondrinker). Silver linings!

Ha ha ha, I can't believe I broke down and did my fangeek thing again. Oh dear God.

See Me, Repeat Me (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 17 February 2006 04:24 (twenty years ago)

Aww Chris what fantastic news! Here's to a happy & healthy pregnancy for you both. I'm so pleased for you guys I can't tell you! xxxxxxx

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Friday, 17 February 2006 15:21 (twenty years ago)

I'm very happy for you, Chris!

My other job is sorta giving me the option of bailing, and I can't figure out if I should or not. I mean, I've received 5% of the money the contract promised so far, and I've been working on it since early December. And that's a big reason why I let it fall behind schedule a few weeks ago, after I learned that despite following EVERY DIRECTIVE the employer had given me, I had to basically start over because the big bosses had changed their minds about what they actually wanted. At that point, as per the original plan, I was about to submit an invoice for 25% of the total project payment, but suddenly that work I had done was irrelevant to the project. Since I had spurned a few other jobs while I was working on that, I was facing pretty major drop in income AND the end of the month bills dogpile, so I had to put this project aside to concentrate on some quickie PAYING jobs.
Last week, they asked me for what I had so far under the new requirements of the project, and I sent it to them. It wasn't much, but the QUALITY was there. Oh yeah.
So I finally heard back from them THIS MORNING, and they're "frankly disappointed" with how little I sent them. And what happened to X, Y & Z? "Are you wanting to complete the contract for this or have you lost interest in the project?"
First of all, I'm frankly disappointed that I've been bankrolling their project. And I thought X, Y & Z were part of the original project and not part of the Project 2.0, so why would I have submitted those?

So I guess I'm just trying to run out my self-righteous indignation and faux-pride here so that I can grovel back to them, because I could really use the money.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Friday, 17 February 2006 15:55 (twenty years ago)

So you got your way Sam! ;-)

Panther Pink (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 09:14 (twenty years ago)

Provided it's not too saturated, pink makes for a very forgiving room color. Which room is it, Sam?

M. White (Miguelito), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 15:50 (twenty years ago)

Chris, that's brilliant! I want to ask how it happened, but I fear I may get all too obvious an answer :)

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 15:54 (twenty years ago)

Well see when a man loves a woman very much. . . ;)

It's a kind of light pink. although everything looks darker on the walls. It's going to be "my" room. Basically the guest(cat) bed and all my yarns! woo-hoo!

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 15:59 (twenty years ago)

Sounds lovely Sam!

Panther Pink (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 16:28 (twenty years ago)

Ohhhh I want my own room. I love the hub and everything but my own pink room with a cat and TIDINESS and maybe a hidden stash of chocolate would be divine.

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 16:30 (twenty years ago)

I know how you feel, Archel. Some day I want a library/office of my own.

M. White (Miguelito), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 16:33 (twenty years ago)

This baby be taking up any spare space we have.

Panther Pink (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 16:36 (twenty years ago)

Do any other TITTWIS cohabitors have a kind of de facto room ownership arrangement? Like, there's a sort of unspoken thing where the kitchen and garden are Matt's domain, the bedroom and the bathroom are mine, and the living room is a hellish free for all shared equally.

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 16:37 (twenty years ago)

I used to have a dressing room which was pretty much mine. James had the studio at the end of the garden (it was used as an office) which had his decks, his vinyl & cosy armchairs in it. He never went out there though!

Panther Pink (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 16:44 (twenty years ago)

I think we both have veto power.

M. White (Miguelito), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 16:47 (twenty years ago)

Our new house is slightly smaller than the current one but it still has three bedrooms. So we each get rooms for our own junk. It also has a large add-on to the back of the house that G. wants to make into a den/entertainment room. That will require the buying of more furniture as we don't have enough seating as it is.

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 16:50 (twenty years ago)

Yay, CHRIS!!!!! *noise makers making noise* WOO HOO!!!!!!!!!!

Hello, everyone. The baby news makes me happy. :-D

As for my cohabitation, we share most rooms, but the "guitar room" a.k.a. the "computer room" seems to belong to Nick. I monopolize the clothes closet.

In a way, though, I feel like all the rooms are a little more mine than his because I do almost all of the cleaning and decorating. My next project will be painting a few rooms, but I have to make myself wait until it's not the dead of winter so we can open windows, etc.

Sarah Madkitten McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 16:59 (twenty years ago)

YAY Chris! YOOGE Congratulations!

I scored a sweet temp job today, y'all. Three months of working for them for free has brought me an offer of three months of working for them to get real paid, huzzah!

Mark and I have our own rooms as such in our house. The room where we sleep is Mark's room, and nothing of mine is in there, while the other bedroom has all my stuff in it and is a total sty right now. It functions as the guest room. I'd like to decorate and repaint it (parts of the walls were painted orange by a former occupant) but have so far been too lazy to do so. The rest of the house was decorated before I moved in, and I've only really added plants. I'd really like us to redecorate, but we haven't gotten around to it yet.

It's nice being able to have my own room, even if it's really messy (I should go tidy it really), especially now that my computer's fixed and I can stop bogarting Mark's space.

sgs (sgs), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 19:07 (twenty years ago)

Relieved.

Whoah Huck, what happened?!

Yay SGS - well done you!

Panther Pink (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 14:42 (twenty years ago)

Not fired from my main job (though, y'know, the day's only just begun and I'm on a roll), from my OTHER job, which I basically burned myself out on.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 14:50 (twenty years ago)

ah Huk. . suckage. Although I guess if you feel ok about it then it was a good thing.

my allergies are nutty today. And I start a new knitting class tonight which always leaves me nervous.

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 14:54 (twenty years ago)

Huk, how does that affect your Vancouver vacation plans?

M. White (Miguelito), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 14:59 (twenty years ago)

Well, I guess it means my schedule is open.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 15:03 (twenty years ago)

And it doesn't really affect your budget 'cause they didn't really pay you after the start anyway, right?

M. White (Miguelito), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 15:24 (twenty years ago)

Exactly.
I was pretty much treating that money as gravy (and maybe I should have taken it a bit more seriously, but, well, there were a lot of issues in play), and I think I still have a case for billing them for services rendered (whether or not they think they have a case for paying that bill is another issue). And come may, I'll have been working at my current job for five years without having taken more than two days in row off (and that I think I've only done once), so I mean, I'm due a holiday.
So, time to book my flight, I guess.
AND, just before I got the YOU'RE FIRED email, I got a call from the radio station asking me to fill in a shift on Friday. I gave up my radio show to do this job (and my timeslot has been filled by a dude who's spent the last 3 yrs in the overnight deadzone, so I can't really expect to get that back), so I've got some immediate fun to look forward to as well.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 15:37 (twenty years ago)

Cool. It sounds as much a relief as a disappointment.

M. White (Miguelito), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 15:46 (twenty years ago)

Yeah. I really shouldn't have taken the job in the first place. Or I should have quit my other job to do it. But I'm just not in the mood to do nothing but work 20 hours a day.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 15:50 (twenty years ago)

I can't imagine ever being in the mood for that!

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 15:50 (twenty years ago)

Shiftless rascals, you!

M. White (Miguelito), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 15:51 (twenty years ago)

I revived the thread, but just in case, happiest of birthdays to you, Pink! xxx

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 23 February 2006 06:42 (twenty years ago)

HB on here too!

You guys, I just found my first gray hair.

sgs (sgs), Thursday, 23 February 2006 12:55 (twenty years ago)

Happy birthday, Pinkster!

I bought my Vancouver tickets last night. Now I just have to break the news to my job-job.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 23 February 2006 14:30 (twenty years ago)

happy bday pink! this year has got to be great for you with the babyness and all. :)

your first gray hair? i started getting gray hairs in college. i have a bunch now, but they're mostly underneath and not at all noticeable (i hope). i don't want to have to dye my dark hair to keep it dark, but i imagine i'll have to one of these days.

my mom started going gray really really early, and now has completely white hair. when she's tried to dye it, it's turned unnatural hues of beige. really horrible looking. i hope i don't end up with that when i'm old.

Juulia (julesbdules), Thursday, 23 February 2006 14:52 (twenty years ago)

I got my first WHITE hairs at 17. In my chin. And now that I'm beardo, I look WAY distinguished.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 23 February 2006 14:54 (twenty years ago)

Happy Birthday, Pink!

M. White (Miguelito), Thursday, 23 February 2006 14:59 (twenty years ago)

yes much sarcatic sorrow for you sarah. ;) If I didn't dye my hair I'd look at least in my 40s.

pink, birthday plans?

I'm now embarked on my first sweater and am frightened of all the complexity. so much math in knitting!

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Thursday, 23 February 2006 16:41 (twenty years ago)

haha Sam I don't expect anyone to actually feel sorry for me about the gray hair! :) I don't even feel bad about it. I'm more gently amazed at noticing it than anything--like "ah yes, this must be some kind of milestone or something"--my hair color runs the gamut from auburn into light blond, which all combine to appear as indeterminate light brown, so I'm surprised that a single strand caught my eye. I am actually sort of looking forward to dyeing it eventually--I've always wanted to dye it red, but thought it might look weird because of my pale eyebrows.

Anyway, enough of my VANITY.

There is a lot of math in knitting! My mom sent me a sweater for my birthday, and included the pattern for the cool vintage photo, and it was like looking at a programming language.

sgs (sgs), Thursday, 23 February 2006 19:03 (twenty years ago)

Or what I imagine one to look like, at any rate.

sgs (sgs), Thursday, 23 February 2006 19:04 (twenty years ago)

My ex-boss knit a scarf that ended up being about two inches visibly wider at one end than the other.

M. White (Miguelito), Thursday, 23 February 2006 19:05 (twenty years ago)

I don't have any grey hair yet, but because I've said that, i'm gonna find one tomorrow.

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 23 February 2006 19:18 (twenty years ago)

xpost - this would be why the math is a good thing.

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Thursday, 23 February 2006 19:19 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, Sam, I didn't say anything but it was pretty flagrantly off.

I have a few grey hairs but I think I'll be bald before I go entirely grey. >:(

M. White (Miguelito), Thursday, 23 February 2006 19:34 (twenty years ago)

but you don't have to count anything with a scarf! you'd have to be doing a complicated pattern and really screw up to get a scarf that bad...

Juulia (julesbdules), Thursday, 23 February 2006 21:31 (twenty years ago)

Do you mind if I take the 5th on that one.

M. White (Miguelito), Thursday, 23 February 2006 21:41 (twenty years ago)

xpost

Let's say you start by casting on 20 stitches, then by the end you've got 30 on the needle. . that's one wacky scarf. I frequently either drop or add stitches so I have to pay close attention and use lots of stitch markers.

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Friday, 24 February 2006 01:03 (twenty years ago)

I MET LORRIE MOORE TONIGHT! (And she's a really, really sweet person.)

*laugh* The last time I got this high over meeting someone, it was because I'd met Nick Rhodes for the first time. But... please excuse me, because I'll be dancing on clouds nine, ten, and eleven for awhile.

See Me, Repeat Me (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 24 February 2006 04:10 (twenty years ago)

I don't even know who that is, but it must have been fun!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Friday, 24 February 2006 14:37 (twenty years ago)

I have taken to wearing my headphones while working, because, well, I'm just a total badass.
NON-BADASS RESULT: My productivity has skyrocketed.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Friday, 24 February 2006 17:52 (twenty years ago)

I wish I could wear headphones, but having to answer the phone precludes that.

Fuckers.

luna (luna.c), Friday, 24 February 2006 17:54 (twenty years ago)

I technically have to answer the phone, but I don't. I am KILLER BADASS.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Friday, 24 February 2006 17:57 (twenty years ago)

I've worked a couple of extremely dead days where I just blasted a streaming radio station. No-one but wrong numbers would call anyway.

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 24 February 2006 18:15 (twenty years ago)

I can listen to music, but it has to be low enough that one of the jerkfaces can't hear it from his office (he sits down the hall from me) that it's almost not even worth it.

luna (luna.c), Friday, 24 February 2006 19:35 (twenty years ago)

luna, it's almost as if I detect a note of bitterness in that post.

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 24 February 2006 19:40 (twenty years ago)

Well, I had to clear a paper jam halfway into my unpaid lunch hour, so I'm going home now.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Friday, 24 February 2006 19:44 (twenty years ago)

Only a note? I'm slipping. I just don't think he has any redeeming qualities whatsoever.*

- He appointed himself fridge monitor (even though the attorneys go out for lunch every day and he has never put one thing in there) and has taken to throwing out people's food if it does not have their name AND the date on it. Just has the name? Bang, in the trash because it's not "following (his) rule."

- He can't stand laughter of any kind, and if someone dares to do it within his earshot, he will come and close the door of whatever room you're in. He could close his, but that wouldn't be nearly as satisfying for him.

- He called me incompetent and said he hated me at a Secretary's Day lunch for something that was the mistake of another attorney and NOT me, THE DAY AFTER HE STARTED HERE. He was kidding, but not kidding, you know? Also, he didn't know me well enough to make jokes like that AFTER ONE DAY.

- He called the fire department on one of the partners for smoking on the balcony in his own office instead of maybe hi, asking him not to?

He's basically condescending and rude, has no people skills whatsoever, and no one in the office that I'm aware of - save for his associate toady - can stand him.

Also, he has bad dye jobs.

*I admit that one thing that I vaguely respect him for is that he's a GIANT PENIS and he doesn't try to hide that fact. I assume this is because he doesn't know how.

luna (luna.c), Friday, 24 February 2006 19:49 (twenty years ago)

I realize that none of these are enough to condemn someone, but really, he is just an insufferable prick at all times.

luna (luna.c), Friday, 24 February 2006 19:49 (twenty years ago)

You realise "he's" can be a contraction of "he has" or "he is", right?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 24 February 2006 19:51 (twenty years ago)

That's true - I meant he is. As in, "HE IS A BIG FAT FUCKTARD."

luna (luna.c), Friday, 24 February 2006 19:53 (twenty years ago)

wow luna, that guy sounds like a total ass. At least no one else (save contemptible toady) likes him.

Dee, I'm so impressed you met Lorrie Moore! At a book signing or reading? I once heard that she's a pretty harsh critique of student writers' work, but then again I suppose it's easy to be, considering the quality of most student writing respective to the quality of her own. Anyway I'm glad to hear that she was a sweet person, and you must be so psyched :)

sgs (sgs), Friday, 24 February 2006 19:54 (twenty years ago)

Sure sounds sufficient to me.

Anal Attorney Syndrome- must have the date on your food! Dude, g f yerself. No-one, but no-one shouold be obsessing about other peoples' food that much unless they work in the restaurant industry. Just do what most place do and have a bi-menusal fridge cleaning.

Hates laughter? Sorry, but people like this would do humanity the most service by acting as fertilizer.

Social ineptitude? More dorkesque than evil but some amount of pain infliction could be justified. Accidentally repeatedly staple his scrotum to his pants or something. Say, "Oh sorry! I'm incompetent."

If he called the fire department on me while I was smoking, he'd find his brake lines severed, at the very least.

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 24 February 2006 19:57 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, he's a jackass.

luna (luna.c), Friday, 24 February 2006 20:03 (twenty years ago)

SGS: It was at a reading * -- she read from this novel she's currently working on, and she also read a completed short story that was very, very good, as are all of her other short stories. I'm not surprised she kicks her students' asses, because of the reasons you ennumerated. But that doesn't mean she's not a wonderful person; the only English teacher i ever really liked kicked all of our asses in numerous times wrt essays we submitted, in-class literary analyses, etc., but she was incredibly fair and she made sure even this decidedly non-creative person did well on the AP test at the end of the year. She's also the reason why I tend to get a bit long-winded at times (she emphasized length on the answers we gave to the essay questions on our tests), so.

Ok, two for two tonight fangirlishness-wise. This is what I'm currently watching on VH1C. The band isn't as tight as I'm accustomed to it being -- they were SO DAMN TIGHT in the late '90s and in the year 2000 -- but hey, it's them.

*: It could also be considered a signing, as she signed copies of her books after the reading. Oh yes, and there was a mini Q&A session too. So it was a full evening. Oh, and I totally got her autograph, obv.

This surprises me. Isn't length for the sake of it a bad thing? Or did it help you express all ideas, or perhaps it made you feel you didn't have to hurry your thoughts.

This surprises me. Isn't length for the sake of it a bad thing? Or did it help you express all ideas, or perhaps it made you feel you didn't have to hurry your thoughts.

I guess it was so some of us wouldn't be allowed to write down just a couple of sentences and leave it at that. Or give half-assed answers. I mean, it really wasn't length for the sake of length, but more like a searching for some real depth to the content of the answers. She knew when one of us was bullshitting just to fill up empty space and would call us on it, albeit in subtle ways.

See Me, Repeat Me (Dee the Lurker), Sunday, 26 February 2006 15:31 (twenty years ago)

Oh yeah, and that thing I was watching on Friday? Total fucking rip-off. Since when does VH1C air all those commercials in the middle of something? The actual thing itself was heavily edited -- I think it ended up being maybe half of the actual performance. Which sucks because I've found out a friend of a friend actually appeared in this thing. Ah well. (It's rerunning right now on VH1C; that's why I suddenly remembered.)

Beautiful Discovery of the Day: Puppies love empty plastic bottles. They will exhaust themselves playing for hours with one. There is no need to chase them around the apartment when a plastic bottle is on hand. Comes in very handy when pup-sitting for a friend.

Hey guys, I've managed tp escape for a brief moment to read the paper and check email.

We closed on the house Thursday and have hardly had a moment's rest since. I've painted four rooms since then and we finally got all of the old flooring up yesterday. Thursday night we stared pulling up carpet and discovered soe ancient-ass tile underneath. We had to chisel that shit up off the slab - as in on our hands and knees with hammer and chisel. argh.

now we're ready to start tiling. i'm dead. every part of me hurts.

how is everyone?

He took this week off so we really have to finish with the renovations now so we'll be able to move in afterwards.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 15:59 (twenty years ago)

Tuesday:

O.E. Tiwesdæg, from Tiwes, gen. of Tiw "Tiu," from P.Gmc. *Tiwaz "god of the sky," differentiated specifically as Tiu, ancient Gmc. god of war, from PIE base *dyeu- "to shine" (see diurnal). Cf. O.N. tysdagr, Swed. tisdag, O.H.G. ziestag. The day name (second element dæg, see day) is a translation of L. dies Martis (cf. It. martedi, Fr. Mardi) "Day of Mars," from the Roman god of war, who was identified with Gmc. Tiw (though etymologically Tiw is related to Zeus), itself a loan-translation of Gk. Areos hemera. In cognate Ger. Dienstag and Du. Dinstag, the first element would appear to be Gmc. ding, þing "public assembly," but it is now thought to be from Thinxus, one of the names of the war-god in L. inscriptions

M. White (Miguelito), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 16:07 (twenty years ago)

I was thinking about that, how days and (most) months are named after "pagan" gods and stuff, and wondering why the anti-Happy Holidays gang never gets uproared about that. I mean, CALENDARS PEOPLE! THE SILENT KILLER!!!

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Monday, 6 March 2006 18:21 (twenty years ago)

Hello everybody!

I'm off for a couple of weeks on vacation. I want everybody to behave themselves (within reason) and play nice while I'm away. If I have a chance, I'll look in to say hello but if I don't it either means I'm busy having fun, I'm busy not having fun, I'm hopelessly lost in some back alleyways, or I've finally met the camel of my dreams.

M. White (Miguelito), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 15:22 (twenty years ago)

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 16:03 (twenty years ago)

Oh, that's terrible, Sam. Is it possible he's just eating stuff in the back yard or something?

Many adjectives have been used to describe me, Ned, but retiring has never been one of them.

Fun is offically banned in S.D., Huk, as we all know.

M. White (Miguelito), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 16:09 (twenty years ago)

We've looked all through our and the neighbor's yards. stubborn little thing. it's breeding season and he's constantly been trying to bust out.

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 16:10 (twenty years ago)

Well I hope you find him soon, Sam, and healthy too. Is he likely to meet any lady iguanas catting around your neighborhood?

M. White (Miguelito), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 16:14 (twenty years ago)

I doubt it. But he wouldn't listen when I tried to tell him. I should go out and have a look now.

M. White (Miguelito), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 18:44 (twenty years ago)

he eats leaves and vegetation. :(

I've posted on craigslist, checked the shelter and am now going to post up some signs (although I think I shall have to make more with pictures)

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 18:51 (twenty years ago)

Has he ever made a run for it before?

M. White (Miguelito), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 18:54 (twenty years ago)

i moved a year ago, and the place i'm living in isn't what was expected. i've lived in a string of weirdass places and i'm sick of it. but i'm looking into getting a two bedroom with a friend who has two cats! it would be so fucking great to have pets around.

Juulia (julesbdules), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 19:21 (twenty years ago)

I have been in my current apt since Oct. 2004. That's the longest I've lived anywhere since I was in high school. I love my apt. If I didn't love it so much, I would be more motivated to do something with my life.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 19:22 (twenty years ago)

So M White, you'll be in England and no FAPpage? Egypt sounds exciting, from what I read on your other thread.

I've lived in this apartment now for almost two years, which is approaching a record for me I think--longest time in one home since age 15 or something, ugh.

sgs (sgs), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 00:22 (twenty years ago)

Aw Sam, I'm sorry to hear about Chingy. I hope you find him soon.

Julia, I know you've told me about your housing woes, so what you're telling me sounds like fantastic news if it ends up working out.

Tonight is election night here in Texas and I'm waiting to see if my cousin will gather enough votes to be put onto the Democratic party ticket for a vacated state Senate seat. It still seems like he'll win, but my heart is in my throat nevertheless. * (I've attended a few of his Christmas party fundraisers.) I'm also appalled by those people who gave DeLay that huge majority in the Republican party primary (not in our area, but noteworthy). Where I live had no hotly contested races, though. It was pretty boring. But I'd love to sign Carole Keeton Strayhorn's petition (for governor) and choose between her and that guy from Houston who ended up winning the Democratic party candidacy for that race. (Kinky's off my nice list because he acted like an asshole and a half to this really kind and sweet local reporter I've met up with a few times.) (Oh, Chris Bell! That's the other person.)

M. White, that's more about today's day name than I think I could've ever cared to have known. ;)

I'm giving up cookies and candy for Lent. The candy thing was a bit of cheating, as not many candies tempt me. (Reese's Peanut Butter egg is pretty much the only candy that makes me go "Ugh, I SO want you.") But cookies are my favorite sweet things in the world and it has already been hard to give them up. I have visions of going to the store a couple of days before Easter, buying a package of those Pillsbury sugar-free chocolate chip cookies and a liter of milk, and the day Easter comes baking the whole package and eating at least half of the warm, gooey, yummy cookies.

(*: OMG, I totally think my cousin won!)

See Me, Repeat Me (Dee the Lurker), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 05:04 (twenty years ago)

Hi Dee!

Hope your lizard has returned by the time you read this, Sam. That chimney thing in the middle of your house is kind of weird, is it like a firepit or something? But I love love love your kitchen units!

Have a great holiday Michael, and don't forget to sample the excellent British cuisine while you're here ;)

I have been in my current home for exactly two months and I like it more than any of the others. So far.

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 09:22 (twenty years ago)

Hey Dee! Congrats for your cousin. I'm totally behind Kinky although there are a handful of his views I disagree with. Mainly b/c I'm all about independants/third parties but then also b/c he was the same major as me in college so I've always had a soft spot for him.

Chingy busted out once but luckily we noticed him missing fairly quickly and G. found him on the neighbor's back porch. This time he was gone for a few hours though. :( I filed a missing report with the city yesterday and put up signs on telephone poles. Today I think I'm going to make little fliers for neighbor's mailboxes. And then I'll give up. :(

That chimney thing looks like it might have been a planter. But it's gone b/c we sledgehammered it out! G.'s mad b/c I didn't take enough pics of the outside. arrgghh!! *sigh* I've only been on my hands and knees laying stone tiles sorry I'm not a good enough photographer!

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:46 (twenty years ago)

man. . .last night some guy found an igunana in north austin (read: too far for mine to have crawled) he called and we've exchanged pictures, no chingy. but he posted his find on craigslist (we're I posted my loss) and my phone's ringing off the hook this morning with other people telling me. nice to know people care.

still no lizard though. . .

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Thursday, 9 March 2006 16:31 (twenty years ago)

Hey Sam, I'm sorry you haven't been able to find Chingy yet. Thanks for the congrats. I was pleasantly surprised to see my cousin on the front page of our local newspaper the day after the primaries. But anyway, hope you do get to finding Chingy. I've heard enough stories of missing pets coming back to their owners to hold out hope he'll do the same.

See Me, Repeat Me (Dee the Lurker), Saturday, 11 March 2006 03:12 (twenty years ago)

Have a great holiday Michael, and don't forget to sample the excellent British cuisine while you're here ;)

I am happy to report that the food (which we didn't have to pay for) at the Four Seasons, Hampshire, was delicious. I had a selection of four local cheeses after dinner on Thursday which were excellent.

Cairo is nuts, btw. More later, if I get a chance.

M. White (Miguelito), Saturday, 11 March 2006 14:09 (twenty years ago)

I know this will sound odd, but I just had some of the best dim sum I've ever had accompanied by a sublime Lebanese syrah.

Sam, my fingers are crossed for you and Chingy re-uniting soon.

M. White (Miguelito), Saturday, 11 March 2006 19:49 (twenty years ago)

The Four Seasons, Hampshire? That's like saying The Best Western, New Jersey or something, Michael!

Markelby (Mark C), Saturday, 11 March 2006 23:39 (twenty years ago)

Michael, you haven't really sampled British cuisine if it was all delicious.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 12 March 2006 02:21 (twenty years ago)

A dis on British cuisine by a Brit? Ok, Martin, what would you consider to be unpalatable in the British food repetoire? Me, I still have nightmares of this fish & chips place I once tried out close to my London hotel -- it was INCREDIBLY greasy, like it had been fried four or five times, and not even the cup of vinegar I must have sprinkled over everything could cut the nasty taste of greasy sludge. That night wasn't pleasant at all, either, as I was kept up practically all night by terrible heartburn, and I had no access to Pepto-Bismol at all. I also recall being ill at ease at the whole milk that was the only thing available to me for breakfast, seeing as though I was raised on 1%. But everything else was more than fine. Especially the sandwiches. Oh God, the sandwiches.

See Me, Repeat Me (Dee the Lurker), Sunday, 12 March 2006 06:02 (twenty years ago)

On another topic altogether -- could someone take away this nasty summer-like weather that's suddenly found those of us down here? I would like for our highs to NOT be in the 90s this early in the year.

See Me, Repeat Me (Dee the Lurker), Sunday, 12 March 2006 06:04 (twenty years ago)

we have a lousy rep for food generally, and I've had poor to mediocre meals in countless restaurants. I contrast our usually poor and unimaginative standards with a truck-stop heading south to Baltimore where I had what I think is known as Philadelphia Cheesesteak - shredded steak with molten cheese (Philadelphia, I assume), which was great. I know you can get mediocre to poor food anywhere, but the proportions seem particularly poor here, and our equivalent major-highway places to eat are very bad - I used to cook in one myself, years ago, so I know how rubbish the standards are.

I like chip shop fish and chips in principle, but the standards and styles do vary hugely. I've had plenty of appalling ones, and being too greasy is normal, but I've enjoyed plenty as well.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 12 March 2006 12:00 (twenty years ago)

hi martin and dee! haven't seen enough of you guys!

teeny (teeny), Sunday, 12 March 2006 13:20 (twenty years ago)

Hey teeny! I've been trying not to rely so heavily on message board communities for the bulk of my casual onlining interests. But I'm glad this thread series exists so I can continue to go back to it and fulfill my board-going needs.

And Martin, I'm no Philadelphian, but I don't think the cheese in a cheesesteak sandwich is supposed to be "Philadelphia" (i.e. cream cheese). That would be kinda icky. Anyway, it's interesting how you say all that. Are there no health inspectors in Britain who would be required to drop in unannounced to places that serve food and do inspections? I know that's required Stateside and many media outlets (usually local TV stations) will regularly advertise the highest and lowest scores of the week. Down here in my neck of the woods, there are two TV stations that do this.

Okay, time for me to go to sleep.

See Me, Repeat Me (Dee the Lurker), Monday, 13 March 2006 07:47 (twenty years ago)

Hi all!

Sam - I'm sorry to hear about Chingy, I hope he comes home soon!

Panther Pink (Pinkpanther), Monday, 13 March 2006 12:38 (twenty years ago)

Argh!
Friday was officially a Winter Coat Free Day, but today it's right back down the crapper weather-wise. (the weekend was so-so) Two more days and I'll be on the West Coast, though, and I bought some KICK ASS new threads that I'm already starting to think I might not have the swerve to pull off.
I bought new sneakers and a matching jacket in my provincial colours. It's probably not a good idea to base your wardrobe on comedy impulses.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 13 March 2006 14:42 (twenty years ago)

Chingy is gone. It's been one week and I'm going to put away his cage today. :(

our weather's been down the crapper for awhile - no winter coats at all this winter hardly. grass is always greener blah blah.

Michael's showing us all up with his glamourous holiday.

when I was studying abroad in the UK my food experience was sublime. we had a french cook at my college.

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Monday, 13 March 2006 16:32 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, we have food and health inspectors. The six months I worked in one motorway place, I never as much as heard of them ever showing up.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 13 March 2006 18:44 (twenty years ago)

Me too! Hope you get some good news.

sgs (sgs), Monday, 13 March 2006 22:25 (twenty years ago)

I just saw an ad on TV that was all "1 out of every 4 pets gets lost and stays lost. Put a microchip in your dog!" And I thought of Chingy.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 04:44 (twenty years ago)

:( When I filed a missing report with the city shelter they asked if he had a microchip. "Uh no, he's a lizard." Don't know if that's even possible.

Hopefully his days of freedom were blissful.

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 05:50 (twenty years ago)

Aww I'm sorry Sam. x

Panther Pink (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 12:21 (twenty years ago)

haha my cat just started eating out of the bowl of pasta sitting next to me. I know I should stop him b/c a. he's fat and b. animals shouldn't eat off of human plates but I've never seen him interested in my food before. it's funny! the dog is watching with envy and confusion.

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 20:36 (twenty years ago)

Oh dear God, nobody's mind should be polluted with the foul presence of that cretin Larry the Cable Guy. Anyway, sorry about Chingy.

Square peg feelings are factoring in strongly tonight....

See Me, Repeat Me (Dee the Lurker), Thursday, 16 March 2006 07:18 (twenty years ago)

hello

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Thursday, 16 March 2006 11:12 (twenty years ago)

sorry about larry. :(

square pegs was a great show!

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Thursday, 16 March 2006 15:39 (twenty years ago)

It's ok. It's just -- most redneck comedians are on my shit list. Jeff Foxworthy just barely gets saved because he's got a funny schtick, and Ron White gets out of it for making an anti-homophobia joke (progressive thinking in the world of redneckdom). But, yeah.

I never got to see "Square Pegs". I wonder how I'll get to.

I've been off today (fully) but have been busy throughout the day, up until now. Hence my posting here. Right now I'm taking a breather, drinking water and watching Martha Stewart (better than most anything else that's on, I find). Mmm, cool, delicious water. Mmm, not being out in that sticky, humid air.

See Me, Repeat Me (Dee the Lurker), Thursday, 16 March 2006 20:39 (twenty years ago)

I dislike the blue collar comic guys primarily because they are unfunny.

it's rather cool here, bout to take missy for a walk.

I love Missy!

I ordered the b1ur DVD last week in a fit of nostaligia and got it today. there were 3 or 4 "newer" videos on there which I'd never seen, including the one for On Your Own. I think Dam0n A1barn was trying to channel 1992-era Beastie B0ys in that one. Oh, the horror.

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Thursday, 16 March 2006 20:51 (twenty years ago)

argh, I didn't even go downtown to try and see the premeire of the new Beastie movie 'cause I figured you couldn't get in without sxsw creditinals. but G.'s friend did and he got to see the boys do a Q&A. :( should've went.

and they're supposedly playing a secret show today and the best info I gets puts it at a big venue that will also be hard to get into so I'm all "eh, forget it." however G. says we will go and try when he gets off work.

What's wrong with me that I won't stand around for 3 or 4 hours to try and see my favorite band in the universe? What happened to the me that drove to Detroit in one 18-hr shot to see them?

She's grew old and lazy, that's what.

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Thursday, 16 March 2006 22:04 (twenty years ago)

I think it's fairly common for all of us to grow slightly less risk-tolerant every year we grow older, from the time we turn 21. Some of us start off less risk-tolerant than others, granted, but still. I guess it's because of maturity or life experience or something along those lines.

Miss Misery, as hard as I try, I cannot picture you being a Blur fan. I know you came of age during the Second British Invasion and all and you would have had to have had some teenaged interest in some of the British pop stars of that time, but I find it more likely that you'd fall in the vein of the "female rock & roller"/"rapper" sides of things even back then. Hey, this is something to work on, sure.

Huck, are you off on holiday?

See Me, Repeat Me (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 17 March 2006 06:19 (twenty years ago)

It's past 2 a.m. I'm alone with my thoughts. Danger.

Could someone please invent a time machine so I can either travel back to the early '80s and live the life of a teenager then, or travel back to when I was 18 years old and knock some sense into me so that I could have actually taken advantage of those younger years? Please? Anyone?

See Me, Repeat Me (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 17 March 2006 08:17 (twenty years ago)

This is what I do when I'm off completely: I stay up all hours of the night doing absolutely nothing but think and read, think and read. But alas, it is 3:30 in the morning and I am finally feeling the pull of my bed. And if the Good Lord is up there with me tonight, he'll implant some Breakfast Club-style dream into my brain to make the night seem pleasurable. If I couldn't have it in reality, etc. ;)

See Me, Repeat Me (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 17 March 2006 09:34 (twenty years ago)

today is a holiday isn't it?

but I find it more likely that you'd fall in the vein of the "female rock & roller"/"rapper" sides of things even back then.

well I was/am! Joan Jett was the first music I ever got into, and I started listening to rap over 20 years ago. But I was also raised on the Beatles, into duran duran in elementary school and had an anglophile phase in college. hugely into b1ur in my early 20s. cute. I only recently started listening to them again without cracking up at dam0n's horrible fake cockney accent. Nowadays I mostly listen to just rap and country. such good bedfellows.

last night we were unable to get into the secret beast1e show. They were only letting in people with SXSW badges (the $600 ones), not even wristbands and forget just flat cover. Even all the badge people didn't get in, the line was unbelievable. So we sat on the grass behind the ampitheater with all the other rejects and listened. It was only a 20 minute set. We got to watch the bats fly out while they played. It was fun.

Later that night we tried to go to a party that mixmaster mike was playing at b/c we thought they(beasties) might show up and b/c, well, MMM is amazing. DENIED! I have gotten into plenty of sxsw private parties but these people just weren't havin' dumb townies like us. As we dejectedly headed back to our car we ran into two members of my most awesome favorite TX band who just got signed to a SKATEBOARDING label (tres cool) and they were going in TO WORK AS BUSSERS! They tried to sneak us in saying we were also supposed to work but we couldn't even get in as dishwashers!

me & g. = teh loserz

My lil' bro's on his way into town and we're going to hit up some hip-hop showcases and probably some rollerderby action. yay!

thanks for letting me blog TITWIS! hugglez!

Hello Everybody! How's stuff? (Sam, my condolences on the Chingy jailbreak and my congratualtions to your cat on successfully starting the 'Eating Their Food' part of your feline/human training.

I am exhausted but somewhat thrilled after four days on the Nile. Tomorrow: Alexandria.

M. White (Miguelito), Saturday, 18 March 2006 11:18 (twenty years ago)

I'm currently posting at other threads now. Again. I have zero willpower.

Sounds like the times have been hot in Austin! I would adore being there at the moment but so many things have come up that I had no choice but to stay down here, even though I was off school all last week and I took off work last Thurs - Fri. (They didn't give us St. Patrick's Day off. Though I think they'll give us Battle Of Flowers day.)

San, I figured you for a rap & country girl. :) Everyone needs to have their specialty. (I almost typed "speciality" -- like, dude, I am SO not British.) Me, I'm in a huge Heaven 17 phase at the mo. LOVELOVELOVE them. And the big band stuff my dad was into.

But anyway. Rantage over. I need to get back to reading the paper.

("San"? I mean "Sam". Honest I do.)

See Me, Repeat Me (Dee the Lurker), Monday, 20 March 2006 03:35 (twenty years ago)

Ok, just heard of a damaging tornado (is there no other kind?) that touched down in Uvalde (hometown of Matthew McConaughey) and is now heading our way, but will apparently lose much of its strength as it approaches our area. But here's the important part: RAIN IS COMING OUR WAY!!! Well, I don't know that for sure; it could be like pretty much every other thunderstorm that was headed our way in the past several months in that it takes its time getting to us and then ends up being a weak little shell of its former self, just leaving us with sprinkles. I won't believe this severe thunderstorm warning malarkey until I see torrential downpours coming from outside.

See Me, Repeat Me (Dee the Lurker), Monday, 20 March 2006 05:37 (twenty years ago)

So maybe that should be: Rain is coming our way. *yawn* Yippee. Whatever.

See Me, Repeat Me (Dee the Lurker), Monday, 20 March 2006 05:38 (twenty years ago)

HOLY SHIT I just saw lightning strike SUPERCLOSE to my house -- like, I saw the flash and almost immediately heard the thunderclap. It's moving away slowly now, but I almost literally jumped out of my seat when I heard it. OH MY GOD IT'S RAINING HEAVILY OUTSIDE!!! I CAN HEAR IT!!! FINALLY, ACTUAL FUCKING RAINFALL!!! OMGOMGOMGOMG, THIS IS THE FIRST TIME IN TWELVE MONTHS I'VE HEARD IT RAIN THIS HARD!!!

See Me, Repeat Me (Dee the Lurker), Monday, 20 March 2006 05:52 (twenty years ago)

I hope you went outside and cavorted in it! (after the lightning had stopped obv)

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 20 March 2006 11:13 (twenty years ago)

I have the f*ckin flu. :(

have been bed-ridden sick for the past two days but have finally stumbled out. arrggh.

maybe one of these days we should start a new thread.

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Monday, 20 March 2006 15:07 (twenty years ago)

Aw, Sam. You're the second person I've heard of to have the crud -- Mom's now the third. Is there something going around?

And Mark, there is no such thing as rain without lightning here (er, I partially exaggerate). Actually, what really stopped me was the fact that it was about midnight when I saw this happening and, well, it'd been crazy to step out in the literal middle of the night to soak up the precipitation.

I wish there were enough Texans in this thing to warrant an active thread series comparable to some of the other regional thread series here, or even enough Texans with the motivation to keep such a series up.

See Me, Repeat Me (Dee the Lurker), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 02:51 (twenty years ago)

Five days (and only three of which were actual days off work) is something of a lousy holiday. But it's a start, I guess.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 14:35 (twenty years ago)

so you are on holiday now huk?

Thanks dee, I'm feeling much better now. Now back to normal job-search and house-fixing stress. arrghh!

We're trying to get at least three rooms completely finished - tile layed, grouted, sealed - before moving in furniture this weekend.

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 15:42 (twenty years ago)

Naw, I'm back now. Back at work, back on the frozen tundra (was in Vancouver from last Wed. to yesterday). Basically, all I did was eat and drink. It was fantastic, but way too brief. But it was my first holiday in 5 years, so I think it's to be expected that I was a little out of practise and underestimated how much time I should have taken off.

*pokes thread aga--* Oops, sorry about that, Fishy Santa. Didn't see you standing there. Is your right eye going to be ok?

See Me, Repeat Me (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 24 March 2006 07:00 (nineteen years ago)

After today I will most likely be web-absent for a few days as we are FINALLY MOVING INTO THE NEW HOUSE! also b/c it's my responsibility to set up the new net but I only discovered this last night. bah.

We are still only about halfway done with renovations though. I have become the home-fixin' queen. Painting, check. ripping up carpet and tiles, check. Mortaring down slate, check. sealing and grouting said stone, check. Add installing baseboards tonight.

yes, a new resume!

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Friday, 24 March 2006 14:36 (nineteen years ago)

Congrats, Sam.

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 24 March 2006 14:50 (nineteen years ago)

Should we start a new thread? I miss all the TITTWIS regulars.

Michael, do you have a collection of your Egypt photos online? have you posted a summary and I missed it? i would love an exotic vacation but I'm beginning to feel I'll never have one.

But I do have an interview on Friday (phear!) and I do have house. Which is looking rather nice.

In bad bummer news, my mom has Hepatitis C. They suspect she was given contimated blood when she was in the hospital for her ruptured stomach a year ago. This is on top of her lupus and rhuematoid arthritis. *sigh*

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 01:34 (nineteen years ago)

Egypt photos, Sam.

I'm sorry to hear about your Mom, Sam. It cannot be said that she has great luck, medically speaking.

Break a proverbial leg on the job front and post a photo of your pink knitting room.
