Hi all,
Occasionally I'll get on the net and google "Uruk-Hai" or something. I did that this evening and saw this. I chuckled.

If you must know, a lot of us are/were college students who participate in Belegarth, a full-contact combat simulation using foam weapons. The costuming can be from fantasy and history. We use foam weapons that are designed to be swung full force and not injure the target. The armor must be made of period materials so chainmail, leather and plate are used in the construction. While some armor may not be the most attractive, it gives you some protection.

When I say full-contact, I mean football/wrestling/martial arts full contact. Our events easily top 400 and are a lot of fun for both the jock and the nerd, The nightlife is lots of drinking and hanging out after a full day of fighting.

Anyway, some of you might find this interesting so check out Belegarth.com and see if there is a group near you.

Check us out www.belegarth.com Make fun but at least give it a shot. It's lots of fun for both the geek and the jock due to the fnatasy and full-contact aspects of it.

Fessing up: I haven't read Donaldson since I was a teenager either, but I've gone back and tried LotR as an adult and just couldn't do it - I've got to be able to get with somebody's prose enough to enjoy the story, and I think JRR is a genuinely poor writer at times. But within the genre of fantasy - come on, he gets his place cos he originated so much, but his followers must have surpassed him a ton of times.

The Tolk has these really weird variations in tone, and it doesn't read as simply appropriate to the geography of the story. Like okay maybe he wants the Shire stuff to read like cutesy shit but it just comes across as more child-oriented writing that he beefs up once he gets his war on. And Frodo's little Sauron mind-trip when he has the ring on just before the Fellowship splits up is v. weird: "Verily I come unto you" or whatever just clonks with its out of place Biblical allusion. Maybe it was a sly dig at Lewis.

he's a patchy writer and too mired in technicalities for me to enjoy now the way I did when I was 13, for sure. I kind of feel like Lewis bested him, for me anyway, in the end, by being a better writer, with a more human touch; his books have more emotional weight to them.
