RoxyMuzak© (roxymuzak), Monday, 6 February 2006 16:33 (nineteen years ago)

Oh no, my work week is ruined.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 6 February 2006 16:34 (nineteen years ago)

This one is less clear cut, methinks

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Monday, 6 February 2006 16:35 (nineteen years ago)

don't worry, it's not as good

RoxyMuzak© (roxymuzak), Monday, 6 February 2006 16:35 (nineteen years ago)

It's all about what's her name in the green.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 6 February 2006 16:35 (nineteen years ago)

wow, look at the lady in green;s tights! she must be a DAUNCER

POOP BITCH (Mandee), Monday, 6 February 2006 16:35 (nineteen years ago)

the gentleman in plaid is key

RoxyMuzak© (roxymuzak), Monday, 6 February 2006 16:36 (nineteen years ago)

Well the photo was taken in Zurich and is hosted on what appears to be a Czech website.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 6 February 2006 16:37 (nineteen years ago)

Lady in green does look a little like she's about to flip out and go mental on the dancefloor

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Monday, 6 February 2006 16:37 (nineteen years ago)

Ah! I have just noticed plaid gent

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Monday, 6 February 2006 16:38 (nineteen years ago)

adherents of the cult of the QUEEN ALIEN gather to pray as she prepares to deposit her eggs

mark s (mark s), Monday, 6 February 2006 16:38 (nineteen years ago)

Looks like a young Shelley Duvall in the red, third from the right.

M. White (Miguelito), Monday, 6 February 2006 16:38 (nineteen years ago)

She must have come straight from work at Hooters in those tights.

svend (svend), Monday, 6 February 2006 16:38 (nineteen years ago)

Three women in red tops? Is this a Finnish motorcylce gang?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 6 February 2006 16:39 (nineteen years ago)

Is it the plaid gentleman's place, do you reckon?

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 6 February 2006 16:39 (nineteen years ago)

who's house is it? note crap paintings obv done by a friend.

RoxyMuzak© (roxymuzak), Monday, 6 February 2006 16:39 (nineteen years ago)

What about the look red-jumper vampire in the middle is giving Father Crossmuss? She vants him, I reckon.

East from the city and down to the cave (noodle vague), Monday, 6 February 2006 16:39 (nineteen years ago)

IS THAT CRUDDERS IN THE SANTA HAT?????

Dan (Haha I Should Have Left The "Gat" Misspelling) Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 6 February 2006 16:40 (nineteen years ago)

Is that a piñata, or a hanging lamp? Do they have piñatas in Switzerland?

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 6 February 2006 16:41 (nineteen years ago)

Red jumper on the left is doing the white soulboy lipbite.

East from the city and down to the cave (noodle vague), Monday, 6 February 2006 16:42 (nineteen years ago)

These people really don't understand the rules of blind man's buff.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 6 February 2006 16:42 (nineteen years ago)

can we see the photog's reflection in the glass

RoxyMuzak© (roxymuzak), Monday, 6 February 2006 16:42 (nineteen years ago)

Plaid gent is standing VERY close behind red girl with shut-eyed pained expression...

What is SantaHat holding? Christmas gift?

Archel (Archel), Monday, 6 February 2006 16:43 (nineteen years ago)

The tall woman with the long neck may be preparing to "swallow" that plant she sitting on.

Dave will do (dave225.3), Monday, 6 February 2006 16:43 (nineteen years ago)

Her face suggests she already has.

East from the city and down to the cave (noodle vague), Monday, 6 February 2006 16:45 (nineteen years ago)

It's a lamp, not a pinata.

My god, they're doing the hokey cokey aren't they :O

Archel (Archel), Monday, 6 February 2006 16:45 (nineteen years ago)

I think it's safe to assume that this was taken at Christmas time, but do we know what year? Can Jon do his magic to find out?

melton mowbray (adr), Monday, 6 February 2006 16:45 (nineteen years ago)

Which part are they supposed to be putting "in" then? And who pulls that "lost in music" face to the hokey cokey?

East from the city and down to the cave (noodle vague), Monday, 6 February 2006 16:46 (nineteen years ago)

This one is less clear cut, methinks

yeah, it's far from being as strong as the one and only "sngh" (snog?)
i can't really tell what they are doing there... (all i can say is there's alcohol involved !).

AleXTC (AleXTC), Monday, 6 February 2006 16:46 (nineteen years ago)

Ugh I hate all photos that 'say' "LOOK! I HAF FWENDS ENUF TO FWOW A LAME HOUSE PARTY!"

suzy (suzy), Monday, 6 February 2006 16:48 (nineteen years ago)

Does anyone know what CD that is in the man with the blue shirt's hand?

melton mowbray (adr), Monday, 6 February 2006 16:49 (nineteen years ago)

It's disturbing though, there's not enough evidence of alcoholic beverages recently consumed... just the one beer bottle (?) on the table at the back, by the solitary tealight. But it must be either alcohol or religion.

Archel (Archel), Monday, 6 February 2006 16:50 (nineteen years ago)

you people are spiteful.

the kit! (g-kit), Monday, 6 February 2006 16:50 (nineteen years ago)

As that might give us a clue what they're dancing to. (xposts)

melton mowbray (adr), Monday, 6 February 2006 16:50 (nineteen years ago)

Judging by the Christmas hat and the Mickey Mouse ears and people's general attire, this could be an office Christmas party, but why is held at someone's flat? Do they work for a small firm that couldn't afford to rent some restaurant for them? Or do thirtysomethings in conservative clothes still have home Christmas parties and do funny dances? Thirtysomethings of ILE, can you help me?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 6 February 2006 16:50 (nineteen years ago)

Oh it's a CD. A festive compilation?

Archel (Archel), Monday, 6 February 2006 16:51 (nineteen years ago)

Photo is from Dec. 11, 2004.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 6 February 2006 16:51 (nineteen years ago)

I've never seen such scabby xmas decorations in my life and green jumper looks like she's just realised that her support tights haven't prevented a DVT which is just about to enter her BRANE.

Penelope_111 (Penelope_111), Monday, 6 February 2006 16:51 (nineteen years ago)

Does anyone know what CD that is in the man with the blue shirt's hand?

It looks like some cheap trance compilation, but I don't think people like that would dance to trance. Unless one of them is "hip to this youth thing" and the others want to prove they're still young at heart too.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 6 February 2006 16:52 (nineteen years ago)

If you look at the other photos, you see they have drank more booze than that one beer. Also, the lady on the extreme right with a pinkish shirt seems to be the owner of the flat.

Also, judging by the pic subtitle the CD they are listening to might be this:

http://www.nika.si/slike/3858882194723.jpg

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 6 February 2006 17:01 (nineteen years ago)

why do you think shes the owner?

RoxyMuzak© (roxymuzak), Monday, 6 February 2006 17:05 (nineteen years ago)

Also, what country's Internet pages end with a .hr, because both Daleka Obaka the band and the picture seem to be from there?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 6 February 2006 17:05 (nineteen years ago)

Croatia.

Archel (Archel), Monday, 6 February 2006 17:06 (nineteen years ago)

No, she went of her own accord.

Matt (Matt), Monday, 6 February 2006 17:08 (nineteen years ago)

why do you think shes the owner?

She looks pretty ownerish in these two pics:

Let's not beat around the bush here - they're Christians, aren't they? A millenial sect at the very least. The gentleman in the white shirt as the charismatic Koresh figure. And our friend on the left? The rapturous jiggling has had a strange effect on him. But I think - I think - he's just about managed to hide it.. I think everything's going to be ok..

mark s (mark s), Monday, 6 February 2006 17:21 (nineteen years ago)

Znanost.org is some sort of Croatian non-governmental organization for co-operation between scientists. "HRuCH" could be short for one of their projects. This explains why the party is held at someone's home, they don't necessarily work at the same place.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 6 February 2006 17:22 (nineteen years ago)

green jumper lady or far-left red jumper lady are the likely culprits?

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 6 February 2006 17:24 (nineteen years ago)

mark s (mark s), Monday, 6 February 2006 17:27 (nineteen years ago)

why would they have a party if they dont know each other, esp a party in someones house

RoxyMuzak© (roxymuzak), Monday, 6 February 2006 17:28 (nineteen years ago)

"HRuCH" could be short for one of their projects.

Uh, sorry to be a pedant, but could it be a reference to 'Church'?

I'll cut you a deal: Christian Scientists?

Nicholas Passant (Nicholas Passant), Monday, 6 February 2006 17:29 (nineteen years ago)

They have some project they've been working together in, or they are part of some board for the organization.

(x-post)

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 6 February 2006 17:30 (nineteen years ago)

Why would Croatians use the English term for church, and misspell it, to boot?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 6 February 2006 17:31 (nineteen years ago)

If you want to be a real detective you've got to be logical about these things!

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 6 February 2006 17:32 (nineteen years ago)

Hr are the first two letters of Croatia in Croatian; European acronyms often use the first two letters of a word rather than just the first.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 6 February 2006 17:33 (nineteen years ago)

I'm afraid these characters lack the cosmic mystery and mythic appeal of Wayne, Megan and Laurel.

lupine luck, Monday, 6 February 2006 17:36 (nineteen years ago)

I'm pretty sure that HRuCH means "Croatians in Switzerland." The picture was taken in Zurich.

Also this text ...

Sva ljudska biæa raðaju se slobodna i jednaka u dostojanstvu i pravima. Ona su obdarena razumom i sviješæu i trebaju jedna prema drugima postupati u duhu bratstva.

... translates to: "All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood."

Which suggests, if syntax is more or less the same as English, that "i" means "and," and "u" means something like "in" or "of."

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 6 February 2006 17:37 (nineteen years ago)

I tried to search for some info about "Daleka Obala" and why would it make a roomful of scientists dance in such fervor, but I couldn't find too much about the band.

(x-post)

Jaymc, you're a real detective you!

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 6 February 2006 17:39 (nineteen years ago)

Christian Scientists aren't known for their logic. I have no such excuse.

Nicholas Passant (Nicholas Passant), Monday, 6 February 2006 17:39 (nineteen years ago)

This opens a whole new vista: why are they in Switzerland? Is their hostess Swiss?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 6 February 2006 17:40 (nineteen years ago)

http://www.websters-online-dictionary.org/translation/Croatian/u

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 6 February 2006 17:41 (nineteen years ago)

Scientists, eh? They're doing an experiment. They've got to count to the square root of 11 december 2004 in the Unix calender, then clap their hands (one of them is caught in the act) and then backwards to zero again and open their eyes (three are done already).

Both Leggy and Necky are obviously using their fingers for the counting.

StanM (StanM), Monday, 6 February 2006 17:42 (nineteen years ago)

RoxyMuzak© (roxymuzak), Monday, 6 February 2006 17:44 (nineteen years ago)

Also, doesn't the rug on their couch look like a logo of some kind?

StanM (StanM), Monday, 6 February 2006 17:44 (nineteen years ago)

Do you mean blue (veined) thing?

M. White (Miguelito), Monday, 6 February 2006 17:54 (nineteen years ago)

I'm guessing they rented the appartment together. Nothing there suggests someone actually lives there (think away the christmas decorations and it's a totally anonymous room with a sad garden table and some nondescript default art that came with the frame).

StanM (StanM), Monday, 6 February 2006 17:54 (nineteen years ago)

StanM, you say ten, but there is clearly a full front-on reflection in the window, making eleven. xposts

melton mowbray (adr), Monday, 6 February 2006 17:55 (nineteen years ago)

Do you mean blue (veined) thing?

yes, but I am not confusing it with a penis.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 6 February 2006 17:55 (nineteen years ago)

See the kitchen pics: that's totally a rented kitchen in a holiday apartment. Not someone's actual daily kitchen.

Melton: ok, no elevensome will be happening then. :-)

StanM (StanM), Monday, 6 February 2006 17:57 (nineteen years ago)

Actually, that reflection could be the disembodied hand's owner, could it not?

xpost!

they're work collegues, for sure. how often do you gather your friends so you can stand in a circle and do, well, whatever the fuck it is they're doing?

AleXTC (AleXTC), Monday, 6 February 2006 18:04 (nineteen years ago)

OK, so someone does live there? (books in the new pic)

Have they just played charades? (note on table says: "Rudolph the deer")

ath (ath), Monday, 6 February 2006 18:19 (nineteen years ago)

Whether or not she's the hostess, I'd say the lady in the pink dress is kinda hot, no? All in all these people seem a bit too cool to be natural scientists, I bet they're from the faculty of social science or the humanities. What do you think?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 6 February 2006 18:20 (nineteen years ago)

The problem with that top pic is that the people can easily be paired off with extra ladies to spare, its so gonna happen.

"pink shirt"

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 6 February 2006 18:20 (nineteen years ago)

Zwan (miccio), Monday, 6 February 2006 18:21 (nineteen years ago)

Oh come on, Roxy just used the old thread title to make this one more recognizable.

That piece of paper on the table says "RUDOLPH THE DEER" on it.

Sure, we know it's a Christmas party, and they're probably playing a game. But why are they writing in English?

melton mowbray (adr), Monday, 6 February 2006 18:26 (nineteen years ago)

CDs in the apartment:

Leonard Cohen, Dear Heather
The Temptations, For Lovers Only

something by John Coltrane
something by Take That
something called Blueberry Hill (Fats Domino?)
something by a band called "L'Aventura" ??

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 6 February 2006 18:41 (nineteen years ago)

Actually, I take back the Coltrane one: it's really blurry, but for a second it looked like it said John Coltrane on the spine.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 6 February 2006 18:42 (nineteen years ago)

I agree that these threads jumped the shark the moment we found diehl in iraq's site and the "other photos". Still, I have a public to please. The title is 100% an homage to the orig. thread, and has nothing to do with today's photo.

RoxyMuzak© (roxymuzak), Monday, 6 February 2006 19:08 (nineteen years ago)

I don't agree with that, necessarily. I wrote here about the first "so not gonna happen."

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 6 February 2006 19:10 (nineteen years ago)

I'm sure that one of those CDs says Popol Vuh. Really it does.

emil.y (emil.y), Monday, 6 February 2006 19:12 (nineteen years ago)

RoxyMuzak© (roxymuzak), Monday, 6 February 2006 19:18 (nineteen years ago)

On the first pic in the gallery there are some photos on the frigde door, depicting a dog and a woman (girl?), which would suggest this is indeed someone's flat. The photos seem to be taken somewhere else though.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 6 February 2006 19:19 (nineteen years ago)

Also, there's a postcard on the kitchen cupboard door which seems to say "The Phantom of the Opera", or am I seeing it wrong?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 6 February 2006 19:20 (nineteen years ago)

And below the pics on fridge door there's a piece of paper that says "Croatia", which is perhaps somewhat weird if this pic takes place in Zürich. Are they partying at some Croatian expat's flat?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 6 February 2006 19:22 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, i think we've pretty much established that it's a flat

RoxyMuzak© (roxymuzak), Monday, 6 February 2006 19:24 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, but who owns it?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 6 February 2006 19:24 (nineteen years ago)

There are also some Disney toys on the radiator, which would suggest there are kids living in the flat as well.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 6 February 2006 19:26 (nineteen years ago)

we dont know!!!

RoxyMuzak© (roxymuzak), Monday, 6 February 2006 19:26 (nineteen years ago)

It's nice to know that Croatians in Switzerland eat guacamole.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 6 February 2006 19:27 (nineteen years ago)

One of the books on the dresser is a Spanish dictionary.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 6 February 2006 19:28 (nineteen years ago)

Dude, you just scooped me on that: I was about to say the exact same thing.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 6 February 2006 19:30 (nineteen years ago)

Perhaps this explains their love for guacamole!

melton mowbray (adr), Monday, 6 February 2006 19:32 (nineteen years ago)

Ohhhh...interesting.

I just did a rough translation of the caption of the photo, based on that Croatian-English dictionary site I linked to earlier.

KOJA JE OVA RIBA U PRUGASTIM PANTALONAMA? = Who Is This Fish in the Striped Trousers?

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 6 February 2006 19:37 (nineteen years ago)

Hmm, is there any way Fish could possibly be confused with "two beer queer"?

melton mowbray (adr), Monday, 6 February 2006 19:41 (nineteen years ago)

Okay, here's my theory: a group of Croatian scientists have come to Zürich for some science conference. They happen to know a fellow Croatian living in Zürich who's promised to host a Christmas party, since it's December. They get inebriated, and at some point the hostess turns up with a record of "Daleka Obaka", a Croatian rock band that was popular when these people were in their teens or twenties. Our tipsy scientists feel a flood of "nostalgija" going through their Croatian souls and start a boisterous dance. At some point two of them sneak into the bedroom for a round of horizontal mambo, something that they'll regret in the morning. This'll entail some intra-faculty tension once they get back home.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 6 February 2006 19:43 (nineteen years ago)

Wait, Melton, I think we're making some headway here: I just discovered that one of the CDs that was sitting out (with the CD out of the case) is by the Spanish-language band Aventura, who are from the Dominican Republic.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 6 February 2006 19:43 (nineteen years ago)

v. strange. Are we absolutely sure they're all Croatian? The "Rudolph the deer" note is still bothering me a bit.

melton mowbray (adr), Monday, 6 February 2006 19:48 (nineteen years ago)

Those checked trousers are really ugly. Also the girl in red has a coloring book picture of a Disney kitten (from The Aristocats? I can't remember) on the wall behind her. SO either there's kids in the flat or people with a weird Disney fetish.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Monday, 6 February 2006 19:49 (nineteen years ago)

How popular are chips and guacamole in Central Europe, really? Is it possible this is a Spanish-themed party?

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 6 February 2006 19:50 (nineteen years ago)

they look like that kind of people.

RoxyMuzak© (roxymuzak), Monday, 6 February 2006 19:51 (nineteen years ago)

I think they're grad students, from all over Europe. What is that box of metal things that couch man in burgandy-shirt has on his lap?

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Monday, 6 February 2006 19:52 (nineteen years ago)

The calendar in the kitchen is still on the November 2004 page. December's not exactly a month you forget to flip the calendar over on.

melton mowbray (adr), Monday, 6 February 2006 19:53 (nineteen years ago)

I think they're grad students, from all over Europe. What is that box of metal things that couch man in burgandy-shirt has on his lap?

Chocolate confection, I'd say.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 6 February 2006 19:55 (nineteen years ago)

The opening page does say "HRuCH Christmas party, 11.12.04., Zurich", so I guess someone'd just forgot the calendar.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 6 February 2006 19:56 (nineteen years ago)

Also, I think it's an adult who's an Aristocats fan, as this bedroom has Aristocats posters in, and doesn't look like a kid's room.

Does anyone know where the map on the right hand wall is of? Could it be... Spain?

melton mowbray (adr), Monday, 6 February 2006 19:57 (nineteen years ago)

The map is on the door, rather.

melton mowbray (adr), Monday, 6 February 2006 19:58 (nineteen years ago)

"Daleka obala" = something like "faraway shore." I wonder if this is a joke having to do with the fish comment, i.e. the girl who looks like a fish is nostalgic for the faraway water she's from.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 6 February 2006 20:00 (nineteen years ago)

No no, "Daleka Obala" is a band, I even linked their LP cover.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 6 February 2006 20:02 (nineteen years ago)

Of course it could be a joke too, based on the band name.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 6 February 2006 20:03 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, I must've missed that: I thought you made that up about them being a band.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 6 February 2006 20:07 (nineteen years ago)

Are we absolutely sure they're all Croatian? The "Rudolph the deer" note is still bothering me a bit.

Well, a lot of scientists have to use English as part of their work, and the fact that it is written as "Rudolph the deer" and not "Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer" suggests that English is probably not the first language of whoever wrote it. Possibly there are a couple of different nationalities, and English was a good common language for them to use? Or maybe they just wanted to test their skills in a 'fun' way, like big old nerds.

emil.y (emil.y), Monday, 6 February 2006 20:08 (nineteen years ago)

I agree with all of that, Emily. Can anyone see any more scraps of paper lying about the flat?

The map is clearly Croatia:

melton mowbray (adr), Monday, 6 February 2006 20:15 (nineteen years ago)

One of the captions is "U ocekivanju gostiju iz Lausanne".

The last three words are "guests from Lausanne". Lausanne is in Switzerland, and this is from the contact page of their site:

Branimir Lukic, dipl. ing. fizike
Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausane (EPFL)
Lausane, Switzerland

Could Branimir be one of the guests at the party?

melton mowbray (adr), Monday, 6 February 2006 20:28 (nineteen years ago)

This probably isn't enlightening at all, but I translated the rest of the captions:

Uzurbane pripeme = Busily preparing

U ocekivanju gostiju iz Lausanne = Expecting guests from Lausanne

Svi su se kostimirali 1= Everyone is dressed up 1

Hmm... Apple martini ili cista vodka? = Hmm... Apple martini or neat vodka?

Glavni glumci bozicnog igrokaza = Lead actress in the Christmas play

Hit veceri: bajadere = A quick dinner: bajadere (Croatian chocolate)

Vecera i druzenje = Dinner and intimacy

Svi su se kostimirali 2= Everyone is dressed up 2

Ples iza ponoci = Dancing after midnight

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 6 February 2006 20:39 (nineteen years ago)

This is Branimir Lukic:

http://connect.znanost.org/style/branimir.jpg http://www.astro.hr/s3/img/leader01.jpg http://www.student.hr/izbori2002/zg/dokumenti/slike/studentski.JPG

Doesn't look like any of the gostiju.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 6 February 2006 20:41 (nineteen years ago)

Haha, you're googling too?

What about this one? She's on the contact page too, and lives in Zurich.

melton mowbray (adr), Monday, 6 February 2006 21:05 (nineteen years ago)

I missed off the most important part. She's from Croatia.

melton mowbray (adr), Monday, 6 February 2006 21:06 (nineteen years ago)

Isn't she the red skirted lady?

M. White (Miguelito), Monday, 6 February 2006 21:09 (nineteen years ago)

I think so! But why is she only in the one picture?

melton mowbray (adr), Monday, 6 February 2006 21:47 (nineteen years ago)

First to go in some kind of homicidal, Slavic elimidate?

M. White (Miguelito), Monday, 6 February 2006 21:51 (nineteen years ago)

The caption for this photo should read: "What in Caucasia are these people doing?"

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Monday, 6 February 2006 21:53 (nineteen years ago)

Jena (JenaP), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 07:36 (nineteen years ago)
