It all depends on whether you can still eat Love Hearts after you've written on them in felt-tip pen.

Zoe Espera (Espera), Monday, 13 February 2006 19:27 (twenty years ago)

I called a felt-tip pen company a few years ago and asked. The ink is non-toxic. It's ok to eat. Phone research also proved that glitter is safe to eat, if you want to make brownies with a Special Ingredient that isn't the weeds.

Abbott (Abbott), Monday, 13 February 2006 19:28 (twenty years ago)

But I plan to send a picture of a flock of birds flying in a heart shape. I'm not going to add any text or anything, because she already has a boyfriend and I'm only the friend.

StanM (StanM), Monday, 13 February 2006 20:33 (twenty years ago)

I mailed my bf a book on beijing (he's going there in june, hopefully with me in tow) wrapped in a pink tea towel, a love letter & a wooden spoon. the wooden spoon had a little tag on it made from a pink bicycle playing card & said, "spoonful of love." really, i just liked the spoon.

R. Kelsey (kelstarry), Monday, 13 February 2006 20:41 (twenty years ago)

That's fantastic. I love the spoon, too, and I haven't even seen it!

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 13 February 2006 20:56 (twenty years ago)

i am not giving anything. i am hoping i receive something from a secret admirer, that i might have, but probably don't, though.

StanM (StanM), Monday, 13 February 2006 21:26 (twenty years ago)

I can't hear the phrase "spoonful of love" without going "ew".

Dan (Biohazard) Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 13 February 2006 21:29 (twenty years ago)

im not giving anything, fuck that, i have $8 in my bank account right now and that's two full packs of smokes

[though i did have my crush over last night for a movie. over the course of our group conversation (as a few of my housemates/mutual friends with crush were there) i not only got made fun of for girlpants, but she also talked about how she wanted some dudes who lived across the street]

fuck lamentines day

nervous (cochere), Monday, 13 February 2006 21:29 (twenty years ago)

on a less annoyingly jaded note this really is a fantastic thread title

nervous (cochere), Monday, 13 February 2006 21:45 (twenty years ago)

nervous, she sounds like a dick.

POOP BITCH (Mandee), Monday, 13 February 2006 21:52 (twenty years ago)

mandee i think it was a lot more jokey than i took it... my friends rib me all the time, but with the way i was feeling at the time (ie just having gone to pick up one of my frat brothers for the movie and seeing the car of exgf i still have deep feelings for parked there as she's started hooking up with another one of them) (ps dont judge me for the frat thing) i just took it the wrong way.

still, i doubt she returns my affection, and i'm not super excited about spending my 20th valentines day in a row alone

nervous (cochere), Monday, 13 February 2006 21:56 (twenty years ago)

Try telling her that she can use you to perfect the technique she's gonna try out on the dudes across the street.

Dan (Romcom Solution) Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 13 February 2006 21:57 (twenty years ago)

i agree spoonful of love is corny & promotes ew-ness, but i was charmed by it & needed to tie it into the theme. just to justify, you understand.

R. Kelsey (kelstarry), Monday, 13 February 2006 22:03 (twenty years ago)

(ps dont judge me for the frat thing)

haha! too late!

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Monday, 13 February 2006 22:09 (twenty years ago)

I don't know if I'd call the phrase "spoonful of love" "corny", per se.

POOP BITCH (Mandee), Monday, 13 February 2006 22:18 (twenty years ago)

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 13 February 2006 22:27 (twenty years ago)

I don't know what to say to you, Dan Perry. Should the tag have read, "I heart spooning"???

By the way, I don't think you're in Mpls, but that's where I mailed "the spoonful."

R. Kelsey (kelstarry), Monday, 13 February 2006 22:33 (twenty years ago)

BILLIONS UPON BILLIONS OF (or 4) XPOSTS:

djp: this is a genius answer-- but more seriously the thing that's so stupid about the whole situation is that since i started with my last girlfriend over a year ago i've completely forgotten how to flirt without being really drunk. and since i've just promised myself that i would start restricting my drinking to only 3 nights a week (instead of the 5 or 6 i was doing before) that leaves me little time! plus none of our mutual friends want to help me for some unknown reason

misery: awwww- one day i'll have posted enough to earn my ilx stripes and make it past all the anti-greek sentiment around here. or actually, i was also thinking about depledging (seriously)

mandee: apparently not :( :( :( or, i mean... all of them but me

jaymc: i'll take that as a compliment. it's a bit of a non-traditional frat anyway, i'm not a jock/ladykiller/douchebag and very few of the kids in my house are either

okay i'm done being defensive

nervous (cochere), Monday, 13 February 2006 22:37 (twenty years ago)

my bff and i are going to eat beans and weenees, drink cheap beer, and watch nascar or wrasslin' or something like that on t.v.

i made a valentine's day card for my boss: "it's valentime for a raise!"

i'm giving it to him with a bar of green & blacks. do you think it'll work?

Haha, I *like* this.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 13 February 2006 23:01 (twenty years ago)

Also, PP OTM - do people actually buy full on presents for every hallmark holiday? To me, Val Day, Mothers/Fathers day, Easter etc are about contacting friends and loved ones as apropriate, maybe sending a card or letter, getting together and having a meal. Not buying washing machines and cars and televisions :/

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 13 February 2006 23:02 (twenty years ago)

It depends on the relationship. In my relationship, we buy gifts on Valentine's Day.

Dan (Go Ahead And Judge Me, I Dare You) Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 13 February 2006 23:05 (twenty years ago)

remember when we made valentine's day "mailboxes" to put on our desks at school? i wish we still did that.

ai lien (kold_krush), Monday, 13 February 2006 23:06 (twenty years ago)

But Dan -- washing machines??? I think my dad gave my mom an iron for her birthday once and she cried. He didn't do THAT again.

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 13 February 2006 23:11 (twenty years ago)

Yeah Dan I'm not judging anyone! Gifts are fine, especially sweet caring little gifts, but seriously when its big expensive things it gives pause. Then again I dont even really go in for flowers, so what good am I to say ;)

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 13 February 2006 23:14 (twenty years ago)

(mind you if we're talking rings/diamonds, that I can see as understandable)

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 13 February 2006 23:15 (twenty years ago)

Unless of course your wife has been scrubbing out those coveralls of yours over the rocks in the stream behind the house, in which case a washing machine is an incredibly thoughtful, sensitive gift option. Which, having heard a little about your wife over the years, I rather doubt.

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 13 February 2006 23:16 (twenty years ago)

Also, PP OTM - do people actually buy full on presents for every hallmark holiday?

I used to not do anything for v-day beyonds candy, twee stuffed animals, etc. But then I was given an iPod last year.

Now, I do gifts.

I thought we weren't doing vd presents, we booked a weekend away in spain instead, but I still got a big bunch of tulips at work again, which made me look stupid as everyone had asked me this morning if I was getting flowers again and I'd told them no I'd put some sense into Chris last year and he wouldn't be doing it again.

I made him some heart shaped biscuits yesterday, but they didn't come out great, and the pink icing I made wasn't great either, and he came home before I managed to finish them, so we ate some of them last night. I also made his card, but I did buy him a little bar of green and black's maya gold.

RE: workplace deliveries of flowers. I view it as a source of workplace harrasment. I think it should be disallowed. Or, Vicky, Chris should send flowers to everyone in your office. Otherwise, it just makes everyone else feel and look bad. Birthday is bad, but not so bad, because not everyone is expecting something. But, can't flower-giving be restricted to the privacy of home? Otherwise it seems a bit showy-offy?

Or is this more sour grapes? I've never received flowers at home or at the office.

But I don't think it's such a big issue in our office, certainly I don't think anyone was expecting flowers, myself included. And it was very low key, mine came in a box and only a few people noticed. If I hadn't have got flowers and someone else had, it wouldn't have been a big deal for me at all. It's just not that kind of workplace.

Vicky (Vicky), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 22:36 (nineteen years ago)

I saw a thin blond girl with an unpleasant facial expression struggle out through the doors of the bank at closing time carrying all these enormous bouquets with cards pinned to them, and fight to unlock her hatchback from behind the foliage. She looked cranky about the whole business, like no one who wasn't pretty could ever understood how hard it is to be beautiful on VD.

estela (estela), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 22:49 (nineteen years ago)

a few of my colleagues seemed more pleased about it than I did!

I didn't mean to harp on you and Chris, particularly, Vicky--what a way to kill the Valentine's Day vibe! and I haven't even thought about this lately, except for a friend of mine at work has a birthday the day after mine, and her husband had flowers delivered to her, and yes, while you feel happy for the person, there is also part of you that knows you have to feel happy for the person.

More difficult when people you have continually receive at-office flowers (a situation I was in years ago when I worked in a 3-person office--the others were engaged/married/newly in love/blah blah blah.

I guess I just don't understand--you wouldn't necessarily send a present to the office, so why flowers? I guess it can brighten their desk and that's all well and good, but I'm going to have remain on the side of the bitter singletons on this one.

Did you see last week's American Office? Ha, I don't think you would have. Anyway, the receptionist actually is engaged, and she and her man have "decided not to do anything" and he complies, meanwhile, every five minutes a delivery guy comes with something new for her coworker. Sort of an exaggerated versiou of how it can feel to be the other side looking in.

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 23:13 (nineteen years ago)

We're going for BBQ (Everett & Jones!) and a movie.

Lil' Eno (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 23:14 (nineteen years ago)

I thought you didn't like movies.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 23:15 (nineteen years ago)

I don't but there are two of us in this relationship.

Lil' Eno (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 23:17 (nineteen years ago)

My other question: for those couples. Do you feel self-conscious when you are out and about with all the other couples doing V/DAY type things? I just have a cringing self-consciousness about this day, as a romantic holiday, that I cannot fully get into the spirit of it, even if I did want to affirm a relationship or something. It's different than Christmas--I don't have a problem running around buying my presents at the last minute and sharing in the joy of the season outside of Macy's on 34th Street where it seems like everyone is on the same page (sorry non celebrants). I do get into a bit as a kids' holiday or a friendship holiday though.

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 23:20 (nineteen years ago)

Everett & Jones!! Very sexy.

andy --, Tuesday, 14 February 2006 23:22 (nineteen years ago)

It just makes me cynical. I saw a guy up the liquor store with a shit eating grin on his face buying a bottle of champagne, and I thought "You think you're going to get laid tonight don't you?".

She's been known to sleep on piles of dry leaves... (papa november), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 23:23 (nineteen years ago)

Lil' Eno (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 00:17 (nineteen years ago)

Everyone is fiercely chauvinist about their own bbq, so I won't go into rapturous song, but Oakland/Richmond/Vallejo bbq is pretty righteous. I'm sure there's some good Mexican-style bbq around, too, but I'm not so schooled on that.

Flint's was probably the greatest (a sleeping dog on a dirt floor, indifferent staff, a b&w tv on the counter) but they seem to go out of business about every 8-10 months. I don't know the current status.

andy --, Wednesday, 15 February 2006 00:26 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, Oakland BBQ alert: Chef Edwards has been destroyed to build condos (20th & San Pablo)... don't know if he has a new location.

I gave my wife a nice pair of diamond earring studs (14K gold). Unfortunately, she did not receive the gift until 11:55 PM because I was stuck at work all evening helping to solve a crisis. Meanwhile, she had gotten us a fancy hotel room and had dinner order in for us, neither of which I really got to enjoy.

that sucks Dan.

I have to vote in favor of flowers at the office. They're such a nice surprise. Once, many jobs ago, my co-workers had flowers sent to me for my birthday. That was nice.

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 17:57 (nineteen years ago)

i gave my girl flowers in the office yesterday but we work at the same place.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 17:58 (nineteen years ago)

i was the only female on my floor who didnt receive a flower/basket/balloon delivery, but im still pro-flowers in the office. it makes everything look prettier and seems to put everyone in a good mood. There are still a bunch of red and silver balloons around today, which is nice.

Handmade Valentine's day cards are the best. Nice job LL.

I had plans to be with a long-distance gf that fell through because I need to take care of business matters at be home this week. I have nothing prepared for tonight, but maybe that's for the best since unrehearsed, unscripted spontaneity is more romantic than anything contrived and preplanned.
