Who else is staying in and, in the words of Tim Canterbury, having a biiiig wank?

chap who would dare to be completely sober on the internet (chap), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 15:22 (nineteen years ago)

ILX: FAW?

StanM (StanM), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 15:24 (nineteen years ago)

I'm going to try to get a ticket for this collection of monologues downtown, "The Worst Sex I Ever Had."

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 15:33 (nineteen years ago)

Haha. I just got roses from one of our suppliers -- strictly business! But still smelly.

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 15:36 (nineteen years ago)

hello

Vintage Latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 15:36 (nineteen years ago)

I was sent a packet of lovehearts by a print company trying to get my "business". I'm not single, so I shouldn't really be posting here. Sorry.

Mädchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 15:39 (nineteen years ago)

I need to finish an article today, so I won't have time for any Single on Valentine's Day sadness. And Valentine's is not a big thing in Finland anyway, though personally I find it nice. Anyway, I'm hoping ILXors will keep me company today while I struggle with my writing.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 15:40 (nineteen years ago)

hi everybody!

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 15:42 (nineteen years ago)

hi

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 15:44 (nineteen years ago)

We're typing about half these letters with the actual hand we're going to be using tonight, man! Isn't that romantic?

StanM (StanM), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 15:45 (nineteen years ago)

It's important to remember (apologies to nice folks in couples) JPS's dictum that Hell Is Other People.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 15:47 (nineteen years ago)

XP: I don't understand how that makes it different from any other day.

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 15:48 (nineteen years ago)

Seven years w/o a relationship! SEVEN FUCKING YEARS. I am going to stab myself in the eyes with heart-shaped lollipops.

elmo, patron saint of nausea (allocryptic), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 15:49 (nineteen years ago)

I've just been invited to the pub by another single friend. She split up with her boyfriend about two weeks ago though, so the wank might've been more fun.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 15:52 (nineteen years ago)

It seems that there is some sort of Valentine's Day party later on at my faculty clubhouse, which is right next to this computer class. Maybe I'll visit there. Maybe my singlehood will end tonight!

No, I don't think so either.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 15:52 (nineteen years ago)

Ken: we've been friends for ten years, so really not a good idea.

whenever i've been on a relationship on valentines, i always felt slightly jealous of all the single people drinking away their sorrows and having a whale of a time down the pub rather as opposed to spending a shedload of money on an overpriced and overcrowded dinner.

The Sausage and Mash Cafe on Essex Rd is offering a free sausage for singletons. Insert your own "free sausage" joke here.

I'm going to be out tonight in bars filled with girls that have no one and thanks to the media feel lonely and unattractive and will be grateful for any male attention! Easy pickins howya?

Valentines day, you are designed for bastards!

Or am I?

I was going to say something here, but then ILX went bye-bye.

have you become un-single since then?

POOP BITCH (Mandee), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 18:47 (nineteen years ago)

I think I was just going to post something about how I was either going to go see Transamerica or clean my apartment tonight, depending on how I feel once I get off work. BOR-ING.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 18:48 (nineteen years ago)

NO COMMISERATION - I am, no joke, listening to anth0ny robbins Personal p0wer stuff, which a friend dl-ed and burned for me! hahaha, really, at first I laughed, but it's totally good! I'm getting shit done and am going to go swimming soon! I'm not going to say that it wouldn't be nice to be with someone right now, but it's really nice to be doing the things I'm doing, I just happen to be single while doing them. And smiling. There have been waaay worse days - and screw that noise.

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 19:21 (nineteen years ago)

I'm going to watch last week's Lost, play a bit of age of empires 3, maybe pop down the local for a game of pool, then come home and get some work done.

JimD (JimD), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 19:22 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, and although I'm single, I was brought out for lunch a work associate (www.cavistons.com) and received a gift of a beautiful necklace from an old flame. I love Valentine's Day and always have. It's a day for fun and frivolity!

Lara (Lara), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 19:46 (nineteen years ago)

the best day to book a valentines day meal is either the 13th or the 15th. then you can actually get a table.

I went to check the Valentine's Day party, but it was mostly just posh law student girls in tight sweaters - not my scene really - and few of my friends were there. So I'm back with ILX.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 20:37 (nineteen years ago)

Okay then. Let's to that article you mentioned earlier.

StanM (StanM), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 20:41 (nineteen years ago)

i wish i had someone to snog, even though i'd give them a wicked cold

POOP BITCH (Mandee), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 20:45 (nineteen years ago)

You should care more about the people you snog! ;)

Then again, most folks would probably pay the price of catching a cold for good snogging anyday.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 20:50 (nineteen years ago)

girls in tight sweaters are EVERYONE'S scene, tuomas.

sunny successor (katharine), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 20:51 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, colds aren't so bad, snog > cold

Maria (Maria), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 20:52 (nineteen years ago)

M is right.

jeffrey (johnson), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 20:53 (nineteen years ago)

Hah, yes -- after my last snog, I got a sore throat almost immediately. As with so many other things, I don't believe I wish to complain.

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 20:53 (nineteen years ago)

B-b-but from what I gather, law students are mostly uptight capitalists who've picked their field of study only because it should provide them with a decent amount of cash.

(xxx-post)

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 20:54 (nineteen years ago)

you're only going to make out/feel up/boff them!

sunny successor (katharine), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 20:55 (nineteen years ago)

Why should I do that with some capitalist swine? Besides, people like them are hardly interested in bearded anarchists like me.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 20:57 (nineteen years ago)

personalitist

sunny successor (katharine), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 20:59 (nineteen years ago)

a lot of people become law students because they have an interest in current affairls, law and/or the judicial system. it's only after racking up $100,000 or so in debts that their idealism is crushed and they become soulless vipers with mastercards. the point being, get em while they're young!

yuengling participle (rotten03), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 21:08 (nineteen years ago)

Why do they have to end up with 100 000 $ of debt?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 21:10 (nineteen years ago)

undergrad + law school = $100,000 worth of soul death

yuengling participle (rotten03), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 21:11 (nineteen years ago)

doctors too?

sunny successor (katharine), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 21:12 (nineteen years ago)

tuomas, maybe they want to be public defenders or work for civil liberties outfits, or whatever the finnish equivalent is! the goal is clearly to start reading a manifesto or something and see how many tight-sweatered law students find you irresistible. (note of caution, though: sometimes women find arguing about politics with their opposites really sexy. and maybe that's not what you want to spend valentine's doing.)

Maria (Maria), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 21:13 (nineteen years ago)

Ah, sorry, we have a different system in here... Schools are free and you get student allowance provided by the state (though it's only around 450 euros a month). Which I guess should lead to more idealist law students, but I know only two such people.

(xx-post)

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 21:16 (nineteen years ago)

The medical students I know are pretty left-wing... They're most likely to get a job on the field of public health care (private health isn't that big in here - not yet, at least), which doesn't provide them with big bucks, so they have to feel some call for their job as well.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 21:20 (nineteen years ago)

"private health care"

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 21:20 (nineteen years ago)

med students are more mixed here - there seems to be this perception that it's a career that takes intellectual strength and commitment to helping others, but it is also lucrative and respectable, so it's good in all respects. i think that's fine, though. if you're a good doctor then it doesn't really matter what your motivations are (exception being plastic surgery or something).

Maria (Maria), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 21:23 (nineteen years ago)

no time for love, dr jones. i am going to the gym to ogle spandex-clad ass work out, and then i might get a six pack and watch my DVD backlog, which includes Little Britain, Jam, The Cooler, Stuart Saves His Family and Sunshine State. (hey, which should i watch?)

yuengling participle (rotten03), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 21:23 (nineteen years ago)

I have a funny anecdote on law studies in Helsinki: it's extremely hard to get in to the faculty (because universities are free, everyone with a second-degree diploma can apply to them). After high school, a friend of mine spent a massive amount of time studying the entrance exam, and he made it through on the first try. He was, however, also interested in the social and philosophical aspects of law. So, on some lectures he tried to ask questions about that, but sometimes the other students - not the lecturers, the students - told him not to, because they were there just to get through their studies quickly to make some cash, not to discuss philosophical issues. So he changed his major to sociology.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 21:31 (nineteen years ago)

that's terrible!

Maria (Maria), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 21:36 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, sociology sucks

sunny successor (katharine), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 21:40 (nineteen years ago)

Sunshine State

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 21:46 (nineteen years ago)

tonight will probably feature me going to volunteer at the shelter as usual, then skipping the Bob Mould show to stay at home and save cash and probably play civ 4 some more

kingfish has gene rayburn's mic (kingfish 2.0), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 21:46 (nineteen years ago)

I'm sorry if I've offended any law students here, no doubt there are noble folks among them (as I said, I know two such people myself), I hope it was obvious that I was making unfair exaggerations. And I have nothing particular against capitalist swine in tight sweaters either, I just doubt they'd find my persona fanciable, as I tend to be pretty straightforward about my political and personal beliefs.

Or do you feel politics shouldn't come between snogging and such? Because I often find they do.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 21:56 (nineteen years ago)

sometimes i think political argument is sexy. unless the other person starts defending torture or something (as this republican i used to fancy did yesterday), that's a huge turn-off.

Maria (Maria), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 22:05 (nineteen years ago)

(also makes me want to commit violence but that's not nice.)

Maria (Maria), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 22:07 (nineteen years ago)

Attn: men. Do you feel self-conscious on V/DAY when you walk down the street with a big bouquet of flowers in your hand? Because every other man is doing the same thing. Do you give each other guilty looks or do you try to pretend you don't notice? Because I was sitting in a cafe and all the men walking by were carrying a bouquet of flowers and they looked a bit silly. Maybe I wouldn't have thought that had one handed some over to me though.

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 22:10 (nineteen years ago)

Politics don't get in the way of snogging, but you know, sooner or later one of you starts talking and it all falls apart.

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 22:11 (nineteen years ago)

Haha, Mary, that would totally make me feel self-conscious, but I've never been in that position before!

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 22:12 (nineteen years ago)

by the way, it's valentine's day dinosaur comics!

also i think it is quite possible that one of my male friends is currently baking a cake for the purpose of asking out a lesbian with a cute valentine's day baked gift. oh well, i guess it's better to get rejected with "i just don't like men" than "i just don't like you." yikes....

Maria (Maria), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 22:13 (nineteen years ago)

Wait, you mean he doesn't know she's a lesbian?

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 22:14 (nineteen years ago)

Er, why don't you tell him?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 22:15 (nineteen years ago)

"Sorry I just don't like cake"

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 22:17 (nineteen years ago)

I've had a crush on a couple of lesbians before finding out about their orientation. However, I found out before I made any confessions of love or anything.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 22:18 (nineteen years ago)

because i don't know for sure. it is just a suspicion that i'm not alone in holding due to body language and drama issues with female friends. i am also worried because she's maybe sort of involved with this girl who happened to start dating the girl he had a huge crush on last year, which would really hurt his feelings but i can't really tell him that.

however he's baking cakes for two girls so the day could still end well.

Maria (Maria), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 22:21 (nineteen years ago)

I'm listening to "I'm a Scatman" by Scatman John, and it's making me feel all warm and fuzzy. I knew he was a stutterer, but I never really paid attention to the lyrics, so I hadn't realized before it's actually a message of encouragement for all the stutterers of the world. That's kinda heartwarming.

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 23:18 (nineteen years ago)

well there's always the option of pregaming!

if you really feel sorry can you still go?

Maria (Maria), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 23:19 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I did the right thing really, I only slept about 3 hours last night, I just want my bed now.

JimD (JimD), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 23:26 (nineteen years ago)

(What's pregaming?)

JimD (JimD), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 23:26 (nineteen years ago)

that's good that you're home, then.

(pregaming is taking a few shots before you go out. mainly the domain of underage high school and college students who can't get drinks once they actually are out somewhere, but also useful for equalizing levels of nonsobriety.)

Maria (Maria), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 23:28 (nineteen years ago)

Aha, yes.

Well, yep, sod it, who needs real life flesh and blood girls when I can be cheered up by the lovely ladies of ilx? Maria and Laurel, you two are now offically my 2006 valentines. Kisses! :-)

JimD (JimD), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 23:32 (nineteen years ago)

jim you are so stupid xp

i'm spending my 20th single valentines in a row doing computer programming for this job i just got which i wouldnt even have to have if i hadnt had a fucked up relationship with my last girlfriend (which i think had a lot to do with me having been single for so much of my life) which poorly affected my grades leading to me failing out of school last semester

cyclical or at least so it seems at the moment

nervous (cochere), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 23:35 (nineteen years ago)

i might drink a little bit too. drown my sorrows and all that

hrm or maybe invite my crush over for some valentines day drinking?! this is an interesting idea

nervous (cochere), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 23:38 (nineteen years ago)

only if you aren't a weepy drunk! it could be a great idea, though!

i went to the grocery store and bought baking supplies. less essay-writing tonight and more cookies!

Maria (Maria), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 23:51 (nineteen years ago)

take aim at pairs of birds, preferably quail.

seriously, once i leave the dayaccounting tempjob, i'm parking cars and then going to go home and watch Laura. I movie about someone getting ...umm shot by a shotgun.

God, I love food, specifically baked ziti, meatballs, wine, and also the company of my downstairs neighbors and their cats! It's nice to leave work on time for a change, and do my socializing at home instead of going to bar -- for one thing, I can wear my pajamas.

I'm having a steak and some salad, a chocolate chip muffin for dessert, drinking some soda water with lime, and looking forward to laying on my bed in the fetal position moaning to myself for the rest of the night. FUN!

frankly, mr. cankly (Pillbox), Monday, 14 February 2011 20:22 (fourteen years ago)

dawned on me today that i have been single every valentine's day, unsurprisingly i suppose i don't tend to have relationships which last, and the only thing i've ever got a girl for valentine's day is a toothbrush. girl i'd had a holiday romance with and kept up with for years by email was coming to visit me, coincidentally on valentine's day, and expressly forbade me from getting her a romantic gift, but she texted me from the train saying she'd forgottem to pack a toothbrush.

i'm a lot more unhappy about the fact that that reminiscence has reminded me of that girl, and the fact that we're no longer in contact, than i am about the fact that i'm always single on valentine's day, which tbh doesn't really bother me unduly.

this year will be better than last year when I got drunk at home and passed out watching Old Boy on Netflix. It's really dumb that this holiday makes me sad at all. When I was in a relationship, it would make me sad because our Valentine's Days weren't romantic enough or as gratifying as what our coupled friends seemed to have.

sarahel, Monday, 14 February 2011 20:35 (fourteen years ago)

We have invited a single friend over for dinner and a movie. I think we always feel better doing this than making a silly VD plan. We do remantic things together all the time. Saturday we went to the Silent Film Festival - I think that's turning into our ersatz VD celebration, anyway.

Le mépris vient de la tête, la haine vient du cœur (Michael White), Monday, 14 February 2011 20:50 (fourteen years ago)

TBH even when I've had bf's I have never been given flowers or taken to dinner or any of that pap. The most I have had is I think once Nick drew me a cute comic version of himself holding a loveheart or something, which was p adorbs.

Actually, not that it's soething I'm into, but I cant think of very many times in my life at all where a guy has standard-style wooed me (flowers/dinner/a letter).

Now I'm depressed.

Listening to The Walker Brothers and drinking red wine. Might watch a downloaded Blue Valentine tonight. My first valentines being single in many years, and it's not much fun. I didn't think it would be a big deal, but somehow it's getting me down. I wish had recent ex hadn't sent me a casual Happy Valentines email. Maybe I'm being gross, but it's not much fun right now with these silly diamond commercials on television.
