I am a pretty skinny bloke (not unhealthily so) and while not too bothered about it in general, do take issue with people who think it's okay to hurl that little jobe my way from time to time. You can't attack any other physical attribute without being deemed pretty fucking rude so why does this one slip through the socially unacceptable net?

Maybe you should ask yourself *why* you're not too bothered about it in general. Is your self-regard in this respect utterly uninformed by cultural norms?
I'm a skinny bloke too... and have had comments "hurled" my way (some positive, a few negative - or at least slightly barbed), but in current culture (generalization alert!) "skinny" is different from "fat" in that it has *some* positive connotations (ever hang around teenage girls?), even though, sure, the ideal male is still more meso- than ectomorph. Let's be precise: for guys, mesomorph (muscular) is the ideal, but when given a choice between either side of muscular -skinny or fat - the culture tends to favor the former.
Second, "skinny" tends to be seen as a state achieved through hard work and good habits- working out and whatnot; whereas "fat" tends to be seen as the result of laziness - or poverty (which carries its own stigma).
And finally: I think it's weird, bordering on willfully blind, that you pose this question as if gender were not an issue ("Why is it okay to call someone...."). Do you not see how the experience of a guy being called "skinny" would be leagues apart from that of a woman being called "fat"?

"But then all of the big stars have big heads: Joan Crawford, Marilyn Monroe. Even my head is big. It's a size 7 7/8."

Of course a guy being called skinny is a bit different to a girl being called fat but they're not worlds apart and to a certain extent equivalents. And the context in which these comments are generally made is worth considering too - usually making reference to unhealthiness in the same way as being fat is unhealthy.
And while I'm very conscious of it, I'm not too bothered about it not because culturally it's supposedly more acceptable to be thin but because i'm generally quite comfortable with who I am. Isn't that the same answer that larger folks give?

Both epithets can connote unhealthiness, yes, but even then, they imply a very different sort of judgment. "Oh you're so skinny" just as often implies "you've been working too hard, neglecting yourself, you need a good woman/mother/etc, let me *feed* you, you poor thing". It may be an unwelcome comment, but there's a degree of (a) respect accorded to a creature so distracted by work that they neglect proper nutrition and muscular development and (b) desire to care for said creature. What's more, if you want to get sort of ontological about it, the statement boils down to: we want more of you, not less.
Compare with: "Oh, you're so fat" (especially when said to a woman). It seems to me obvious -starting from the simple observation that in our culture this statement is only ever uttered as an insult- that this implies a wholly different, less warm & fuzzy, set of judgments.

Hmm good point. I think I tried to avoid the apples and oranges syndrome by putting "(especially when said to a woman)" in brackets, but I can see how including that gender-specific remark could muddy the waters.
And yeah, "skinny" has some nasty connotations. But I still think it carries more positive ones than "fat" seems to invoke (in our day and age, etc). So that's basically why it seems to "slip through the socially unacceptable net".

What people aren't considering so much here is that, when yr referring to a lady's bod, there is a difference in tone--a big one--between words like "slender," "waifish," "thin" and SKINNY, just as there is a difference between "zaftig," "voluptuous," "full-figured" and FAT. Few people want to be "skinny" or "fat," but most people wouldn't bristle at the other words--which could very well all be used to describe the exact same person, depending on yr tastes.
The reason why this doesn't apply to mens is because everyone knows fat men are jolly and skinny men are artists, duh.
Also what the fuck is with this "call a fat person skinny and they'll be delightfultron!" nonsense?? I'd just assume you were a sarcastic fucktard.

When I called him on it his response was: "it is ok to sayto someone 'I think you need to be thinner because your health will suffer if not'in a similar way I reckon you should eat more stuff"
While I don't actually think it is okay to tell some they need to be thinner for their health, even i if I did, he really didn't seem to understand that that was NOT even close to what he had said to me. And now we're not talking for the moment. This issue, apparently, still infuriates me.

Aw jeez ... I'm pretty thin and am generally fine with that, but have a friend who used to point it out, like, a *lot*. It's so fucking irritating, I sympathise. I couldn't even put my finger on why either, it's just the very fact of it - drawing attention to something that isn't an issue is basically saying 'this is a problem', I suppose.
The thing is that he's pretty inept, in terms of knowing what effect he's having on people, and just will not/cannot learn from things like this. Pointing out how fucking annoying it was would've just ended up in an argument about how he didn't mean that, or logically it was true therefore I'm being unreasonable getting annoyed, or how thinness is good and I should take it as a compliment. Worst of all is that he genuinely believes this last point and goes on about his own weight and how fat he is even though he's maybe a stone heavier than me - it's like dealing with a woman.
So basically I did stfu because otherwise the relationship would've been intolerable - except for getting the odd sly aside in about how fat he is when he wasn't really noticing. Eventually it stopped (though I've lost a bit of weight recently and it didn't pass totally without comment, so we'll see). The only time I blew up was when we were in a car with people we vaguely knew and passed a genuinely ill skeletal guy and of course it was 'hey! that guy's as thin as you!'. I was angry for a time then back to stfu; I managed, still have him as a pal today and he's way less irritating than I'm making out!
What I wish I'd done, though, is point out calmly but forcefully how angry I was - and then keep doing that for a bit and then at every future instance, but not otherwise engaging on that subject in any way. I'd've felt pretty dickish doing that but hey, it wasn't me who started it, and maybe by laying down a marker the message would've got home eventually.

Well, some people say "you're lucky to be skinny", but I had intestinal problems and surgery when I was 25, and that's why.

Yeah I'm skinny and I get annoyed by people commenting on it as if it's not rude.

i don't really mind when people acknowledge i'm skinny if we're in a car and i'm forced to sit in the middle or whatever but just the general "omg you're skinny" comment not only pisses me off because it's rude but also because it's a totally useless thing to say.

I worked with a guy who was v offended if you called him skinny, tho it was never even mockery, if you even used the word skinny he would get annoyed. As someone whose beer gut increases all the while, I'm mostly jealous, but yeah, any comments about appearance need to be thought through. I think especially once people are over a certain age, like I don't think I'd have given a shit about anything someone said until the last 3/4 years, within reason.
