really tense frame here between dave harold and graeme dott, 70-70 on pink and black, some great safety from both players

ding versus murphy, this is IMPORTANT. Come on future god of sport!

Just got offed, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 15:16 (seventeen years ago)

Why do I still think Ronnie's going to hash this up?

Dom Passantino, Sunday, 16 December 2007 16:35 (seventeen years ago)

Even if he does a Martin Adams and lets Maguire pull level, I'd still back him to win the deciding frame(s). In this form he's overwhelming. I don't think he's as mentally fragile as many people make out, either. It's almost as if he decides when to lose. He doesn't tend to miss pressure pots; when he loses, he lets the opponent rack up huge scores while he plays safeties. This isn't mental fragility, this is him 'just not feeling it'.

Just got offed, Sunday, 16 December 2007 18:22 (seventeen years ago)

He is feeling it today.

It's about time World Snooker had a long hard introspective and asked themselves what they've actually done to help snooker over the last 10 years. If they wrote it all down they'd be lucky to get half a side of A4; and that's including a heading in size 18 font. World Snooker strikes me as an organisation lacking in ideas or direction and their rudderless approach has steered snooker on to the rocks.

An easy win would be to drop the dress code restrictions; especially the bow tie. I mean who wears bow ties these days apart from Chubby Brown? There should still be guidelines as you couldn't have a player wearing a dayglo Agassi circa '92 effort and putting other players off. But within reason why not?

The other thing they could do is expand the number of ranking tournaments. If you had a situation like tennis where there are dozens of events, but the ranking points differ drastically for each. It would mean more interest throughout the year, more lower ranked players getting the chance to play in front of an audience instead of the grind of qualifying school all the time and the rankings would be less of a closed shop. As I understand it there are non-ranking tournaments taking place in Europe currently, there are probably quite a few in Asia and maybe even some in Canada. Wherever there’s a tournament allocate some ranking points. More tournaments in more locations would help expand snooker. Of course the bigger tournaments would have the higher ratings and all the big names would be there for them. Obviously tennis is a much bigger sport globally and perhaps the format wouldn’t transfer favourably to snooker, but I think something has to be done about a season that consists of a mere 8 ranking tournaments.

Maybe these ideas would be the death of snooker, maybe not, but something needs done and the tubes in charge at World Snooker don’t look like the ones to do it.

^^^this is pretty much dead on

The boy with the Arab money (The stickman from the hilarious 'xkcd' comics), Monday, 12 January 2009 23:48 (sixteen years ago)

I suspected as much (re: Big Break)

Goodnight, Mr. Johnson. (country matters), Monday, 12 January 2009 23:49 (sixteen years ago)

And yeah, OTM. I think they should also relax the smoking ban for snooker venues, bring the audience closer to the table, and permit heckling.

Goodnight, Mr. Johnson. (country matters), Monday, 12 January 2009 23:52 (sixteen years ago)

ALSO, wherever there's a snooker tournament, there should also (in a separate room at the same arena) be a parallel three-cushion billiards tournament (or some other under-exposed cue sport other than trickshot competition), which could briefly capture the TV audience's imagination when flicking onto it via interactive, much like the doubles at Wimbledon, and introduce them to bona fide sports geniuses such as Torbjorn Blomdahl.

real talk: all scottish players should be permanently banned from competition

single-issue white nonhipster (country matters), Friday, 16 January 2009 14:40 (sixteen years ago)

there must be a law stating that all scots snooker players are exceptionally boring, dour machines with the flair of a peanut, who always somehow get lucky breaks against more attractive opponents

single-issue white nonhipster (country matters), Friday, 16 January 2009 14:41 (sixteen years ago)

It must hurt when there's one tiny wee fucking game that some Scottish people can beat some English people at.

How many top players of any nationality aren't boring dour machines with the flair of a peanut?

I'll give you Ronnie "no really I'm fucking chucking it this time I'm telling you seriously I'm a fucking enigma me ok maybe one more tournament and that's me. I'm mad though, seriously!" O'Sullivan purely for his game as when it's good it's godlike. After that the top 16/32 is littered with boring twats.

Higgins lacks charisma but he's a colossus on the table when he's on his game. Pure fucking bottle.

Francisco Javier Sánchez Brot (onimo), Friday, 16 January 2009 14:57 (sixteen years ago)

Ronnie loses points for invoking Simon Cowell as someone who can breathe new life into snooker.

Maybe he just wants to play shite but get kept in tournaments with the public vote.

Francisco Javier Sánchez Brot (onimo), Friday, 16 January 2009 15:00 (sixteen years ago)

so many games smell terribly of fixing

o_O (ken c), Friday, 16 January 2009 15:05 (sixteen years ago)

lol someone bit

there's no danger of ronnie needing a public vote to remain in the world rankings, i'm afraid. he is that good.

i was more thinking of how higgins j, dott, maguire and the archdaddy of them all hendry have relentlessly battled their way to robotic success after success with nary a smile. maguire is probably the least offensive but he's also the least successful.

it's matthew stevens i feel for

Beloved lightbulb (Neil S), Friday, 16 January 2009 16:45 (sixteen years ago)

Maguire could be brilliant if he could be arsed more often. He's like a lazy Ronnie who can't even be bothered lying about chucking it.

I still can't believe snooker got so bad that Dott managed to win a world championship.

The Devil's Avocado (Gukbe), Thursday, 8 October 2009 18:08 (fifteen years ago)

Higgins vs Robertson is a great match. Higgins had 100% pot success in the first four frames yet went in 2-2 at the interval. Robertson hit three centuries and led 5-3. Higgins did the old Mr Resilient and took it to a decider.

Higgins was clearing up to take it and knocks in a quality last red but accidentally hit the pink in. 7 points in it, on the yellow, nerves jangling everywhere.

Suggest Gandhi (onimo), Saturday, 10 October 2009 15:48 (fifteen years ago)

wow, that was hella drama. hoping for Ding v Robertson in the final.

The Devil's Avocado (Gukbe), Saturday, 10 October 2009 16:12 (fifteen years ago)

Looks like you're going to get your wish - Mark can't string enough points together.

Higgins - Robertson was awesome. No matter how great their respective techniques, its wonderful to see it coming down to those scraps of luck that anyone can randomly make the most of - it simply came down to Higgins making the last mistake. Not that it doesn't happen in other sports but snooker really zones in on this aspect particularly well.

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 10 October 2009 20:27 (fifteen years ago)

wow @ the series of long pots Ding played to go 5-1 up against Williams. Esp that Brown - the complaint that most snooker players have sub-zero personalities evaporates as soon as you see some of those.

yeah .. the final aint going to be all that though is it given at ththe other semifinalists are not exactly firing on all cylinders.

mark e, Saturday, 4 May 2013 15:31 (twelve years ago)

For the three frames he had to win last night I don't think he struck much above a 50 break but his positional play was a joy to watch: great brown to red in the first frame to kill that off.

Then a red to pink with his left hand in the last.

There is one weakness in his game in that if he has to pick up the rest he'll likely miss but that is only because he is so good with his left! There is no sportsman or woman anywhere who can say that this ability has actually created a weakness!!

Trump was totally bullied and subdued. In that first frame he should've gone for a cannon into the small pack of reds about two shots earlier but he was so vary of Ronnie and tried to pick as many points as possible that he then ended up going for a harder shot, missed and Ronnie took it anyway.

This could be the most underwhelming final since Hendry-Bond. You give Hawkins absolutely no chance. Only thing is you always suspect Ronnie could already be thinking the trophy is his. Its alright for us to think that, not him.

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 5 May 2013 10:08 (twelve years ago)

OTM. I don't think Hawkins has a chance. My estimate is it will be a one-sided affair, but that doesn't have to mean it'll be an underwhelming final. Not if O'Sullivan entertains as he did yesterday.

I didn't at all mind Ronnie not scoring high breaks, his positional play indeed was a joy to watch. Not seem him as focused, making the right decisions for a while. If he brings that to the table today I'll be a happy man.

It is a shame though that the competition seems so much worse. And that is compared to a man who hasn't played for a year.

Le Bateau Ivre, Sunday, 5 May 2013 10:38 (twelve years ago)

When he first displayed this left-handed ability in the 1996 World Championship against Alain Robidoux, the Canadian accused him of disrespect. O'Sullivan responded that he played better with his left hand than Robidoux could with his right.[243] He was summoned to a disciplinary hearing in response to Robidoux's formal complaint, where he had to prove that he could play to a high level with his left hand. He played three frames of snooker against former world championship runner-up Rex Williams, winning all three. The charge of bringing the game into disrepute was subsequently dropped.[244]

lovely cuddly fluffy dope (imago), Monday, 20 January 2014 00:56 (eleven years ago)

Haha that is great. So is this, also from Robidoux's wikipedia page:

Robidoux reached the semi-finals of the 1997 World Snooker Championship, but subsequently slid rapidly down the rankings.[2] He blamed his decline on the destruction of his favourite cue,[2] which he referred to as "the Eel". The incident occurred after Robidoux returned the handmade cue to its maker – an elderly craftsman in Canada – for repairs. But when the cuemaker saw that the cue's butt had been adorned with the logo of Riley, a leading UK cue manufacturer, he took such grave offence he smashed the cue into pieces and sent the remains back to Robidoux.[2] Several years later, Robidoux was asked whether the passage of time may have eased his anger towards the cue maker; "I want to kill him," was his heartfelt response.

Its been a boring final - almost the only way to beat Ronnie is to play tactically and get his timing off (sounds cynical but it isn't), then score heavy when he makes mistakes. In the past Higgins was great at this and Selby beat him at the WC like this.

Ding and the likes of Trump aren't. 8-4 right now.

Not so boring now.

mad, mad stuff: 9-9 from 9-4! It was lightning too.

Incredible last hour - Ronnie pulls out a good safety and then took the points well.

Yeah that was good stuff. It was scrappy from both before Trump started getting into gear.

Loved the shots right after the end: Ronnie looked like he'd lost, like he couldn't believe it, whereas Trump was all ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ after a couple of minutes.

you want one loveable ambassador of the game to lose to a woman, proving her right to be in the men's game in the popular opinion, you choose ken, and he fucks it

lol anyway, she played ok and women should be allowed to attempt to qualify always now, should have always been allowed

Women should be allowed to qualify/play in all tournaments really. Might take a few years but all that should flow through to the World championships.
