Because there needs to be one. Goals, spectacular fouls, adverts, ranting pundits - share them here.

This seems as good a place as any to start.

Si.C@rter (SiC@rter), Sunday, 23 April 2006 13:37 (twenty years ago)

There's an ongoing in-joke on YouTube (as far as I can tell) that, if you search on the "Everton" tag, you mostly get vids of Everton conceding goals uploaded by Rednoses. Strangely, the opposite isn't true due to the overwhelming number of people who think they're the first to upload footage of the second half from Istanbul. You know what? I think I've seen those goals already, DICKHEAD.

I'll go downstairs in minute and check out the above on the laptop, where I can hear them as well as see them.

Lovely Graeme Sharp chip vs Sheff Wed in the FA Cup. 87-88, I think - a 5-0 away win in the third replay:

Wow. Those 10 Le Tissier goals are pretty special.

StanM (StanM), Sunday, 23 April 2006 21:36 (twenty years ago)

Encore du Tiss. Quality's lower, but some of the moments in it are just beautiful. Also opens with a montage of him taking penalties.

Thing about him - there's players who make it look effortless. None of them ever looked like they were putting as little effort in as him. The free kick where the ball's rolled back to him, he flicks it a foot or so in the air with his right boot then tonks it with the same foot - he has the body language of a full-back putting it out for a throw, but the actual trajectory of the ball is this beautiful looping lob into the top corner. There was only one, and there will only ever be.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 23 April 2006 23:53 (twenty years ago)

Guy falling over was Peter Devine, playing for Lancaster City at Brunton park.

The best foul ever was Benjamin Massing's on Claudio Cannigia in the opening match of Italia 90. The only time I've seen a player fouled so hard that he does a somersault. Magic.

There's also a rugby tackle by a Brazilian on a Dutch player in 1974; the commentator says 'he might get a yellow for that'.

That's completely insane. I caught what looked like a report of that on C4 news. At the time I couldn't make out whether the shot actually went in, slipped through the net cuz it was loose. I thought that the kid tapped the ball back in cuz he saw all of this.

xyzzzz__ (jdesouza), Sunday, 17 September 2006 09:28 (nineteen years ago)

Hey, that makes sense, it does look a bit like that. Two of the players are running back appealing for the goal, or doing something with their arms raised anyway. That would explain a lot, but not why they haven't said "that's what happened, watch it", rather than getting suspended.

I prefer to just think that the referee and linesman are completely bonkers however.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 17 September 2006 09:34 (nineteen years ago)

Sadly, no footage on YouTube of a similarly WTF incident at Firhill in the mid-90s when Paddy Connolly of Dundee Utd rattled in a shot which came off the stanchion at the back of the net and came back out again. A Partick defender caught the ball, handed it to the Partick goalie who punted it off down for what he expected to be the re-start. Except the referee (Les Mottram, now a legend of crap refereeing up here for this, like he wasn't crap before) and his linesman managed to miss both the goal and what would have been a handball if it wasn't a goal, and waved play on.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 17 September 2006 09:47 (nineteen years ago)

What was El Classico?

Teh littlest HoBBo (the pirate king), Sunday, 17 September 2006 10:34 (nineteen years ago)

(sorry for the weird language, probably machine translated from spanish)

"After losing for 2-0 in the departure, the night of June 6, 1970 passes to the history by the controversial arbitration of the Basque one Emilio Carlos Guruceta. Rexach advanced al Barcelona, but in the minute 6 of the second part, Guruceta indicated with penalty a lack of Rifé to Velázquez some two meters from the area. To five minutes of the end, the fondness invaded the land of play in the middle of violent police loads. After that party, Guruceta did not beep again never more in the Camp Nou."

Needs the 1998 Derby D'Italia.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 17 September 2006 10:41 (nineteen years ago)

That translated report is brilliant. I have very little idea of the crucial moments from reading that, but "did not beep again never more" is the greatest phrase ever.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 17 September 2006 10:46 (nineteen years ago)

it was a barca vs Real Madrid game, it's talked about a lot in the Barca book but I can't remmeber the details, basically Barca were robbed though (ISTR about three disallowed goals)

Porkpie (porkpie), Sunday, 17 September 2006 10:52 (nineteen years ago)

"the fondness invaded the land of play in the middle of violent police loads" is pretty amazing as well, IMO.

StanM (StanM), Sunday, 17 September 2006 10:59 (nineteen years ago)

someone should name their band 'the fondness'

Space Gourmand (Haberdager), Sunday, 17 September 2006 11:58 (nineteen years ago)

are there any articles/statistics around re female refs? i remember a bit of fuss about a lineswoman in the english lower leagues a year or two ago, but i've no idea what the situation is worldwide.

rtccc (mwah), Sunday, 17 September 2006 18:38 (nineteen years ago)

(btw in googling about the ballboy thing i've seen a few ppl saying that it wasnt in a first division fixture at all, but some random semi-pro cup.)

rtccc (mwah), Sunday, 17 September 2006 18:42 (nineteen years ago)

There was one up here a couple of seasons back. The Albion Rovers manager suggested "I knew it wasn't going to be our day when I found out we had a woman running the line. She should be at home making the tea or the dinner for her man after he has been to the football. This is a professional man's game."

He resigned.

Actually googling for that quote led me to this article, which features our chum from upthread.

i've put up a bunch of old England goals inc. this goal from Waddle on his debut. they've taken down two Bobby Moore clips already tho. cunts.

ha, not Moore but Charlton

reverto levidensis (blueski), Friday, 5 January 2007 15:03 (nineteen years ago)

Ladies and gentlemen, your goal of the season from 1994: Mr Rodney Wallace.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 5 January 2007 15:19 (nineteen years ago)

hell yes. great to see that again.

reverto levidensis (blueski), Friday, 5 January 2007 15:22 (nineteen years ago)

reverto levidensis (blueski), Friday, 5 January 2007 15:26 (nineteen years ago)

that Waddle goal was only enabled by some grotesque goalkeeping

You've Got Scourage On Your Breath (Haberdager), Friday, 5 January 2007 15:40 (nineteen years ago)

so was Maradona's second in '86

reverto levidensis (blueski), Friday, 5 January 2007 15:40 (nineteen years ago)

Talking of grotesque goal-keeping, ignore the Jiri Jarosik goal that comes up first, then LOL and ROFFLE at Scotland international several-million-pound-rated goalie Craig Gordon throwing the ball into the back of his own net five minutes into injury time to chuck away what had been a 1-0 lead for Hearts. (Best clip about 1 minute in)

What with Forest being on the telly, and appearing to have Nicky Southall on the left, I thought I'd go looking for a rather good goal he scored a few seasons back for Bolton.

Instead, I found a compilation of Nicky Southall being rubbish at football through the years. Failing to keep the ball in, missing headers, shooting over from eight yards... someone must really hate the poor sod.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 28 January 2007 14:11 (nineteen years ago)

On the other hand, here's Chris Marsden orchestrating Huddersfield's 3-2 victory over Birmingham City in 1991. You'll be able to spot Chris due to him running with an incredibly straight back and passing the ball like an absolute god...

Probably Venables, given his utter cluelessness about everything
