i want a new drink

For someone who goes out drinking a lot, I am a boring, boring drinker. I need something a little more exciting to drink than rum and diet/whiskey and diet! It has worn thin.

I ordered a vodka gibson the other day, trying to be Kingsley Amis. It was shit and they put an olive in it.

RoxyMuzak© (roxymuzak), Monday, 1 May 2006 12:56 (nineteen years ago)

Gin and Tonic. The sophisticated boozer's drink of choice.

(I can't drink it except in certain circumstances as it makes me randy as a vicar, but still.)

Alone, Jealous and SSRI'd (kate), Monday, 1 May 2006 13:00 (nineteen years ago)

Whiskey and ginger beer! Or, just beer.

chap who would dare to be a nerd, not a geek (chap), Monday, 1 May 2006 13:00 (nineteen years ago)

Oh yeah, I was just going to say whiskey and ginger-ale with lime. Whiskey and ginger beer sounds awesome though.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Monday, 1 May 2006 13:01 (nineteen years ago)

vodka and soda. diet coke as a mixer makes things taste like cleaning solvent.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 1 May 2006 13:01 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, that's true, but I don't really know how anyone can drink diet coke in any situation, let alone as a mixer.

Alone, Jealous and SSRI'd (kate), Monday, 1 May 2006 13:04 (nineteen years ago)

Things I like drinking:

Gin & bitter lemon
Whisky & soda
Whisky Mack (whisky & ginger wine)
Vodka & grapefruit juice
Vodka & cranberry juice
Vodka & ginger ale
Brandy & soda

Alba (Alba), Monday, 1 May 2006 13:12 (nineteen years ago)

I like Vodka and Coke or Vodka and 7uP (See Vodka7 - Charles Bukowski's drink of choice). Vodka and diet coke is the choice of young hollywood because its the least fattening. Ask for a 'skinny bitch'.

sunny successor (katharine), Monday, 1 May 2006 13:14 (nineteen years ago)

Gin an tonic is my guitarist's drink. I need something more unique. Something old mannish!

RoxyMuzak© (roxymuzak), Monday, 1 May 2006 13:17 (nineteen years ago)

Whiskey and ginger then. Or bourbon, straight up!

Me, I like sherry, but that's old lady, not old man.

Alone, Jealous and SSRI'd (kate), Monday, 1 May 2006 13:20 (nineteen years ago)

VODKA7!
Vodka is the choice of older alcoholics because its harder to smell on the breath. If thats not old mannish I dont know what!

ooo...even better: SALTY DOG!

sunny successor (katharine), Monday, 1 May 2006 13:25 (nineteen years ago)

Try delicious PAINT STRIPPER!

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 1 May 2006 13:35 (nineteen years ago)

Kentucky Derby approaching = Mint Julip. It's mostly just whiskey and sugar, but it's awesome.

snumbers (snumbers), Monday, 1 May 2006 13:40 (nineteen years ago)

Pimms. Yumtastic. Not very old mannish though. A steady diet of red wine and Guinness over the years has left me out of touch with many other drinks, so I'm gradually and selflessly working my way round discovering new stuff. Pimms is winning thus far.

Perry is another new favourite. I like most of Alba's suggestions. I've become quite the gin drinker over the last year as well.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 1 May 2006 13:41 (nineteen years ago)

You want old mannish?

Rye whiskey! With ginger, if you want.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Monday, 1 May 2006 13:46 (nineteen years ago)

Moscow Mule - Vodka, Ginger Ale (preferably Vernor's), Lime Juice

When I want a good old man drink, I get an Old Fashioned - preferably prepared by my wife's grandfather. Whiskey, sugarcube, soda, bitters, and an orange slice in some strange secret combination.

For true novelty, have a Dirty Rollie Fingers - a shot of vodka, a shot of brine from the jar of whatever happenes to be pickled at the bar (pickled egg brine in the case of my local bar), and a dash of Tabasco. Add a slice of jalapeno for garnish if you want.

Mattattack (matt attack), Monday, 1 May 2006 15:16 (nineteen years ago)

Vodka Collins, preferably with a lemon-infused vodka, although that veers you off from "old-mannish" to vaguely feminine, but trust me it's a great drink for summer.

jdz, Monday, 1 May 2006 15:23 (nineteen years ago)

Had a few too many of these this weekend:

kumquat vodka slushies

go to trader joes and pick up a few of packages of kumquats some stoli and a bag of ice. plug in your blender and there you go.

No muss, no fuss, just drop a shot glass of bourbon in a pint of beer, then drink.

THEN muss and fuss.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Monday, 1 May 2006 17:30 (nineteen years ago)

I like to call them "cocojitos" cos usually at the point I order something that stupid I'm pretty well into my 5th or 6th mojito or wine or beer anyway.

OMG the gin/lemonade/champagne thing, I've HAD those and I could quite happily drink myself to insensibility on them, and I can't be held accountable for anything that happens on the way.

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 1 May 2006 17:37 (nineteen years ago)

eleven months pass...
Okay, I'm so sick of lager. It's a boring drink and it's making me pudgy. The only problem is it's economical as it takes longer to drink, and it's cheaper than getting a shot & mixer. Plus it isn't too girly. What do I do??

the next grozart, Friday, 27 April 2007 09:31 (eighteen years ago)

Is it just bad etiquette to drink Jim Beam or Jamesons with a mixer? Also - if I do go for a mixer (with anything) I find Coke just too sugary for a whole night out. I've taken to mixing JD with lemonade for this reason. The bar people always give me funny looks.

the next grozart, Friday, 27 April 2007 09:35 (eighteen years ago)

Okay, I'm so sick of lager.

Drink bitter obv. Cheaper, less boring, not girly. Won't help with the pudginess though.

ledge, Friday, 27 April 2007 09:47 (eighteen years ago)

Grozart, start on a real man's or woman's drink, time for Real Ale. Steer clear of the nasty tasting nitrokeg crap (anything that labels itself as extra smooth, amongst other things), so no john smiths or worthingtons and you'll become a man, my son.

Also this

Ed, Friday, 27 April 2007 09:51 (eighteen years ago)

I'm afraid I've given Real Ale a go and it's just not for me. I want to be able to have fun drinking, not pretending to really enjoy the taste of twigs and mud and crap. Horrible, guh! Also no, it won't help with pudginess.

the next grozart, Friday, 27 April 2007 09:54 (eighteen years ago)

Maybe someone could invent a new drink that takes the same length of time to drink as beer, isn't full of sugar/yeasty stuff and has an alcohol content of about 5%. And pref tastes nice.

the next grozart, Friday, 27 April 2007 09:58 (eighteen years ago)

Cider?

Ed, Friday, 27 April 2007 10:00 (eighteen years ago)

cider is good. isn't it just as bad for you as beer though?

the next grozart, Friday, 27 April 2007 10:01 (eighteen years ago)

plus most pubs only sell Strongbow, or failing that - M*gners!

the next grozart, Friday, 27 April 2007 10:01 (eighteen years ago)

Maybe you should just give up and o some exercise.

Ed, Friday, 27 April 2007 10:04 (eighteen years ago)

This is fighting talk. Perhaps you should go back to ribena.

braveclub, Friday, 27 April 2007 10:14 (eighteen years ago)

This is fighting talk. Perhaps you should go back to ribena.

All Real Ale campaigns go something like: "Real Ale, it's not all chunky jumpers and beards... It's cool and fun and the ladies like it too! Don't be a pussy - this stuff TASTES of something!". But whenever I've been to a beer festival it consists of a big old hall with no seats or music or any other entertainment other than the beer and the clientele's fascinating facial hair and their interesting smells. Even those two women wearing birkenstocks in the corner comparing notes have pretty good whiskers. So I buy a drink and it's 3.4% and it tastes rather similar to nappies and rose petals - is this what real men drink? I sip it and sip it until it's even warmer than it was before and think "God this is horrible, will I ever get used to it?" and realise I haven't even begun to scrape the surface of this tepid brown viscous gunge. The best bit of the festival is the end when I collect all the glasses people forgot to hand back and make a cool £10 which I then spend in the next pub drinking something that tastes of FIZZY NOTHINGNESS but is at least digestible.

the next grozart, Friday, 27 April 2007 10:15 (eighteen years ago)

nappies and rose petals

best description of generic Real Ale ever!

Tracer Hand, Friday, 27 April 2007 10:17 (eighteen years ago)

Why not try real ale in a real pub, beer festivals are a bit weird but that is jumping in at the deep end somewhat.

For better or worse Real Ales weigh in at the same strength as lagers nowadays. Seek out something light like Timothy Taylor's Landlord or Deuchars IPA.

You could also move from cooking lager to quality lager.

and very importantly never ever ever ever, I really mean it, drink stella.

Ed, Friday, 27 April 2007 10:20 (eighteen years ago)

grozart, re: non-sickly bourbon mixers, i like jim beam and ginger ale or jim beam and soda

Tracer Hand, Friday, 27 April 2007 10:21 (eighteen years ago)

Ed, Friday, 27 April 2007 10:22 (eighteen years ago)

I wish I could drink dark or white beers all night, but even a half makes my head hurt.

blueski, Friday, 27 April 2007 10:27 (eighteen years ago)

I do like "real" lagers (Paulaner, Leffe, Czech/Polish Lagers) - if I'm ever dragged to our local CAMRA pub (which we do have) or a festival by my Real Ale twat mates (who are actually lovely and not really R.A. twats) I tend to get that or Scrumpy.

Stella is awful but ubiquitous. I tend to go for Kronenbourg, generically unless there's anything better - same shit, different attitude, so I feel less guilt. I will give Deuchars another go as I know they do sell it in our local.

I will try Tracer's ideas too - they just might work!

the next grozart, Friday, 27 April 2007 10:27 (eighteen years ago)

What do you drink Stevem?

the next grozart, Friday, 27 April 2007 10:27 (eighteen years ago)

They put some awful shit (MSG supposedly) into stella to make it moreish. Stella on the continent is a different kettle of fish though, however there are always better alternatives.

Ed, Friday, 27 April 2007 10:29 (eighteen years ago)

MSG? No way! I know it's fucking knobrot but that's ridiculous surely? No I won't be drinking that crap again in a hurry. Actually it wouldn't surprise me if they put MSG in there. The only times I've ever wanted to get hostile or depressed on booze is after drinking that stuff, as is the cliche, so no - no more of that shit.

the next grozart, Friday, 27 April 2007 10:31 (eighteen years ago)

Recently drunk (not all in the same night) in pubs:

Is *that* what's in Stella that gives me the killer hangovers? ARgh!

Masonic Boom, Friday, 27 April 2007 10:36 (eighteen years ago)

MSG is not knobrot, and doesn't give you hangovers, so stop talking crap.

braveclub, Friday, 27 April 2007 10:46 (eighteen years ago)

It does, however, give some people terrible headaches, which is not crap at all.

Masonic Boom, Friday, 27 April 2007 10:47 (eighteen years ago)

It's not very nice. Nicer than Budweiser, but that's saying nowt.

braveclub, Friday, 27 April 2007 12:17 (eighteen years ago)

what is your lager, braveclub?

blueski, Friday, 27 April 2007 12:18 (eighteen years ago)

Given the choice I'd go for fancy continental lagers like Peroni and Estrella. More of an ale drinker on the whole, except when it's hot weather.

braveclub, Friday, 27 April 2007 12:20 (eighteen years ago)

how is that brand surviving/able to advertise so often? I guess they sell well in Yates and whatnot - but everyone drinking it must be younger than the twunts in the ads.

blueski, Friday, 27 April 2007 12:27 (eighteen years ago)

I've bought myself a large bottle of bourbon and a large bottle of scotch in an effort to make myself enjoy one or the other. I won't rest until I'm comfortable ordering either on the rocks.

...yep. Affectations that become habits, amirite :(

Will M., Friday, 27 April 2007 19:42 (eighteen years ago)

Will, don't drink the good stuff on the rocks. A little water will actually bring out the flavor better and will make the booze milder than even ice will.

Bill Magill, Friday, 27 April 2007 19:53 (eighteen years ago)

Since I had one at the Loos Bar in Vienna last March, I've been drinking a lot of Parisiennes, a wet gin martini with a splash of crème de Cassis (blackcurrant liquor) garnished with a lemon twist. It's so easy for me to say that I adore parisiennes, anyway.

snoball, Thursday, 18 October 2007 23:47 (eighteen years ago)

Zomg I tried whiskey + tomato juice once and yes it made me mourn that I'd ruined two lovely beverages. One sip and the rest went into the sink.

Vodka + milk was a disaster too.

The only drinks I've discovered since I last posted are 1) gin (preferably Hendrick's) with tonic and cucumber instead of citrus, and 2) white rum, lime cordial and soda. Both make terrific summer drinks. Sadly, it is no longer summer and people will point and laugh if I continue to drink them.

Yeah, I'm totally going to get back into mulled wine soon. It's my winter booze downfall. Once I start drinking it I start believing that if only all alcohol were served hot we'd have world peace.

Alba, Friday, 19 October 2007 00:03 (eighteen years ago)

Quadruple gin and tonic in a pint glass is a nice mid-evening drink (sip).

everything, Friday, 19 October 2007 00:23 (eighteen years ago)

Half sherry half coke served in a pint glass.

snoball, Friday, 19 October 2007 00:28 (eighteen years ago)

Do you put ice in that? Or is it room temp?

everything, Friday, 19 October 2007 00:30 (eighteen years ago)

I heart Fernet-Branca.

libcrypt, Friday, 19 October 2007 00:31 (eighteen years ago)

Room temp.

snoball, Friday, 19 October 2007 00:32 (eighteen years ago)

Oh and don't drink it too quickly, spoils the effect. It's a good drink for when it's coldish outside, but not too cold.

snoball, Friday, 19 October 2007 00:33 (eighteen years ago)

Also, I forgot, must be regular coke, not diet. Tastes like the contents of a fire extinguiser if you use diet...

snoball, Friday, 19 October 2007 00:33 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, no doubt. Almost everything does. Vodka and diet is pretty much undrinkable to me. Spiced Rum and diet I can handle though.

everything, Friday, 19 October 2007 00:36 (eighteen years ago)

I need a new gin drink.

roxymuzak, Saturday, 27 October 2007 20:42 (eighteen years ago)

Bourbon would do, too.

roxymuzak, Saturday, 27 October 2007 20:43 (eighteen years ago)

I need a new gin drink.

i haven't read this thread so maybe it's already been suggested, but how about a gin delicious?

chicago kevin, Saturday, 27 October 2007 20:45 (eighteen years ago)

I would like a drink from the bourbon family that is a real sipper, something I can nurse over a long period of time, but yet is not straight up or on the rocks or whatevs--I'd like a little something to round it out.

quincie, Saturday, 27 October 2007 20:57 (eighteen years ago)

salt the rim.

El Tomboto, Saturday, 27 October 2007 21:04 (eighteen years ago)

a friend of mine made me an old fashioned the other night and it was a great sipper. tasty as hell.

xpost.

chicago kevin, Saturday, 27 October 2007 21:04 (eighteen years ago)

does anybody else have negative associations with certain types of liquor or whatever, other than the usual "oh last time I drank that barf yak fat anal fighting DUI etc?" because I just realized I have serious feelings of a large beef between me and bourbon.

El Tomboto, Saturday, 27 October 2007 21:07 (eighteen years ago)

fuck that drink

El Tomboto, Saturday, 27 October 2007 21:08 (eighteen years ago)

scotch and root beer = awesome

brian miller, Saturday, 27 October 2007 21:10 (eighteen years ago)

there's that episode of Cheers where I think Norm comes in all down on himself and asks Sam for "whatever it is losers drink" and Sam asks some extra at the back end of the bar what he's drinking and the extra says "Manhattan" so Sam makes Norm a Manhattan

El Tomboto, Saturday, 27 October 2007 21:11 (eighteen years ago)

although I guess since he says a line that technically makes him not an extra

El Tomboto, Saturday, 27 October 2007 21:11 (eighteen years ago)

Q, you need look no further than the manhattan. Make sure to use good vermouth, though - I think Cleveland Park Wines carries Carpano Antica and Vya.

(uh, xpost to tom's manhattan loser drink comments)

brian miller, Saturday, 27 October 2007 21:14 (eighteen years ago)

i have extremely bad feelings toward gin. i went years without having any, then i thought that perhaps it was just huge quantities that i had a problem with but no. a few innocent sips led to vomit. for some reason my antipathy is so strong that tonic water is guilty by frequent association with gin. if i even smell tonic water, i feel ill.

lauren, Saturday, 27 October 2007 21:16 (eighteen years ago)

i don't see how anyone could hate alcohol. shame on you tom.

chicago kevin, Saturday, 27 October 2007 21:18 (eighteen years ago)

I have some bad feelings about vodka but that's because whenever I end up drinking it I'm having a pretty shitty night already.

brian miller, Saturday, 27 October 2007 21:20 (eighteen years ago)

bourbon's pulled a lot of slimy shit on me since I turned of age.

El Tomboto, Saturday, 27 October 2007 21:23 (eighteen years ago)

wait Brian you are kidding about scotch and root beer, right? Because it sounds so vile that it. . . just might work.

OK confession: I do not know how to properly mix something like a Manhattan. I suppose it is high time I learned.

I avoid vodka, not due to any particular beef but just because I don't like it. People who say you can't taste it when mixed have something seriously wrong with their tastebuds.

quincie, Saturday, 27 October 2007 21:23 (eighteen years ago)

also lol at the dude at the bar last week who claimed vodka was "too bitter"

brian miller, Saturday, 27 October 2007 21:23 (eighteen years ago)

same dude who pointed to my campari and soda and asked if it was a jack & coke

brian miller, Saturday, 27 October 2007 21:24 (eighteen years ago)

scotch and root beer tasted like smoky alcoholic root beer, so it's kind of a winner.

brian miller, Saturday, 27 October 2007 21:25 (eighteen years ago)

hahaha @ campari in not a jack and coke shockah.

OK brian you were telling me about something that was maybe kinda like campari but not so bitter and started with an 'a,' I think? Aperbol or something like that?

quincie, Saturday, 27 October 2007 21:28 (eighteen years ago)

http://veniceblog.typepad.com/veniceblog/images/aperol.jpg

brian miller, Saturday, 27 October 2007 21:28 (eighteen years ago)

oh good for me--I was somewhat close. Now what does this stuff taste like and what do I do with it?

quincie, Saturday, 27 October 2007 21:29 (eighteen years ago)

Gimlet. So simple, so classic, so stiff, so delish... Gin > vodka but both great. And it's the only drink that gives you the 'gimlet eye'.

wanko ergo sum, Saturday, 27 October 2007 21:30 (eighteen years ago)

Manhattan:

2.5 oz rye (or bourbon)
1 oz sweet vermouth
2 dashes bitters
maraschino cherry (the for serious kind, Luxardo sells them in jars)

brian miller, Saturday, 27 October 2007 21:32 (eighteen years ago)

waht vermouth to get? I read somewhere that the usual rossi and whatever stuff was crap.

quincie, Saturday, 27 October 2007 21:33 (eighteen years ago)

aperol is much less bitter than campari, so it's easier to mix with. I've been doing about 3oz aperol + 1/2oz orgeat syrup + 1/4oz lemon juice for something really light, it's also good with soda or in a champagne cocktail.

brian miller, Saturday, 27 October 2007 21:34 (eighteen years ago)

Carpano Antica is my favorite sweet vermouth, Vya and Punt e Mes are also quite good.

brian miller, Saturday, 27 October 2007 21:35 (eighteen years ago)

the only alcohol in my apartment right now is a half bottle of vermouth and a bottle of white wine. i'm not up for experimentation right now.

chicago kevin, Saturday, 27 October 2007 21:36 (eighteen years ago)

Vermouth will go bad, so keep it in the fridge and remember to drink it regularly once you open a bottle. (I apply the latter advice to all my bottles)

brian miller, Saturday, 27 October 2007 21:37 (eighteen years ago)

x-post -- So you say.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 27 October 2007 21:37 (eighteen years ago)

oh ok I was thinking that carpano antica was bitters! so then: waht bitters should I get?

also: what can you do with vermouth other than put tiny amounts in cocktails? how to finish up bottle with promptitude?

quincie, Saturday, 27 October 2007 21:38 (eighteen years ago)

steamed mussels. vermouth, some stock, some garlic...

lauren, Saturday, 27 October 2007 21:40 (eighteen years ago)

put LOTS of vermouth in cocktails

brian miller, Saturday, 27 October 2007 21:42 (eighteen years ago)

kevin if you ever want to experiment you can come over

damn.

are those in...cardboard bozes?

roxymuzak, Saturday, 27 October 2007 22:13 (eighteen years ago)

er...boxes.

roxymuzak, Saturday, 27 October 2007 22:14 (eighteen years ago)

Cardboard bozos.

Gin is the usual "oh noes, memories of barfing" thing, but I avoid blended scotches because they give me terrible heartburn. No other hard stuff does it...dunno why. And single malts don't seem to be a problem.

Rock Hardy, Saturday, 27 October 2007 22:23 (eighteen years ago)

there was a time when i had a decently stocked home bar but.... situations, complications etc.

chicago kevin, Saturday, 27 October 2007 22:29 (eighteen years ago)

does anybody else have negative associations with certain types of liquor

i have extremely bad feelings toward gin.

Gin seconded. Much like people can't understand how I can drink Guinness, I can't understand how people can drink gin. To me it tastes so bad and strong that it overpowers any drink that contains it. Also it gives me bad hangovers.

Vodka - particularly vodka & coke - has negative associations because of the many many times I got drunk on it and acted like a complete idiot/bastard.

snoball, Saturday, 27 October 2007 22:37 (eighteen years ago)

guiness always struck me as being too watery, it's not as stout as it looks like it should be.

chicago kevin, Saturday, 27 October 2007 22:41 (eighteen years ago)

Well Guinness is a lighter stout. Imperial stout is stouter in the sense of having a higher alcohol content, and milk stout is stouter because it's thicker. But milk stout I think is bleurgh because of it's sweet taste.

snoball, Saturday, 27 October 2007 23:02 (eighteen years ago)

I know what you mean though, the head on Guinness makes it look as though it should be as thick as gravy.

snoball, Saturday, 27 October 2007 23:05 (eighteen years ago)

two months pass...

I heart Fernet-Branca.

I got a bottle of this for xmas and am about to start drinking it from the bottle i think

johnny crunch, Sunday, 6 January 2008 04:21 (seventeen years ago)

johnny crunch, Sunday, 6 January 2008 04:42 (seventeen years ago)

It takes a few shots to figure out Fernet's goodness.

libcrypt, Sunday, 6 January 2008 05:52 (seventeen years ago)

Does anyone else get Huey Lewis & the News stuck in their head after reading this title?
